Alias was a show that constantly reinvented itself. And its fifth and final season was no exception, as the creative team behind the espionage show worked to pull together the labyrinthine plot elements that had existed over the years, as well as tailor the show around the pregnancy of star Jennifer Garner. The results were somewhat tinged with melancholy as everything was wrapped up, but also had a maturity and respect for its characters--which is not to say that Alias lacked in action. In fact, the season started out with a literal bang, as a truck slammed into the car carrying Sydney Bristow (Garner) and her co-worker and lover Michael Vaughn (Michael Vartan), right after Vaughn had made a mind-blowing revelation to Sydney. What followed was a mind-trippingly enticing blend of fake identities, false fronts, blind alleys, and new characters with dubious intentions, with the importance of the enigmatic Rambaldi device hanging over it all. Just another day at the office for Alias, you say? Not this time--for long-time fans of the shows, the true natures of all characters would finally be revealed, and Sydney would at long last discover the powers of the dreaded Rambaldi device, as well as who was behind the machinations to obtain it for world domination.

What Alias did best was mix its outlandish plotlines with accessible characters who were more than just pieces on an espionage game board. The final season did have a few false starts, as it juggled the departure (and reappearance) of established characters and the introduction of new ones, but by the time it had reached its 100th episode, "There's Only One Sydney Bristow," battle lines were drawn as the core characters hurtled toward the show's conclusion. Not to be too cryptic, but the less you know the better, as part of the fun is puzzling out who's doing what to whom; suffice it to say that the ever-capable Garner, along with Victor Garber and Ron Rifkin as the dueling father figures in her life, laid a groundwork of personal drama that held the show together amidst all the shootouts, tech gadgets and costume changes. While (literally) everyone from Sydney's past made an appearance in the show's 100th episode (including an outstanding turn by Bradley Cooper as Syd's erstwhile friend Will), there were a couple great additions too: Rachel Nichols made a fetching Syd-in-training while Amy Acker, who played the daffy good-girl Fred on Angel, was a menacing and captivating adversary. We will answer one question for die-hard Alias fans: Yes, Lena Olin does return as the lethal Irina Derevko. Sorry, we're sworn from saying anything more. --Mark Englehart

3 out of 5 stars Just SHOOT the basket.......2007-06-27

Sad end to a Great Show;

Too many people come back from the dead, Thank God that this was the last "short" season.

Anyone with more than 2 weeks military experience will be shaking their heads at these supposed professionals.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty darn great!.......2007-06-26

Yeah, I am so glad my mom got me into watching this show and I am sad that it is over. It definetly took me on an emotional rollercoaster and season 5 was just that. Twists and turns. I enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid!.......2007-06-22

Even though Jennifer didn't that much butt-kicking early on the season, she made up for it towards the end. The fight scene against her mom in the series finale was awesome! I want to thank Ms. Garner-(Affleck) for providing the best escape ever on TV. I'm a little disappointed about their decision to put out a definitive collection that didn't include so much stuff on this Season 5 set, but I forgive them. I love Sydney Bristow, the best female character on tv (okay, 4th behind Monica, Rachel and Phoebe). Alias is a TV show everyone should collect.

5 out of 5 stars What is going on?.......2007-06-05

Alias has once again kept us guessing just what is going on. You never knew just who the good guys were and who were the bad guys. Could this happen in the US today? Or is it happening now? Alias made you think it may be possible.

From the moment Jennifer Garner appeared on screen, tied to a chair in a fluorescent red wig, Alias burst onto the scene as an intriguing "spy-fi" series that sucked viewers into a weekly action movie. Like its successor, Lost, creator J.J. Abrams spun a cult favorite show that held interweaving conspiracies, mysteries, and even some of the same actors. Unlike the island drama, however, Lost was really only about one central character: Student-turned-agent Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner, who was catapulted from obscurity to the A-list) learns the government agency she was working for isn't CIA at all, but a rogue baddie outfit called SD-6. Sydney, along with her father (Victor Garber, robbed of an Emmy) work as double agents to bring down SD-6 and its top gun, the ever-shifty Arvin Sloane (Ron Rifkin). Once that happened, of course, there were more bad guys and villainous networks to be brought down, and the rest of the series followed Sydney's adventures--always in various disguises--as she roundhouse-kicked her way through each one.

While season one was about the threat of SD-6 discovering her identity, season two dealt with her personal relations: her romance with CIA handler Vaughn (Michael Vartan), her reunion with her duplicitous mother (Lena Olin, The Unbearable Lightness of Being) and hiding her agenda from outsider friends while revealing it to her former SD-6 comrades. Season three catapulted Sydney two years into the future (with amnesia!) facing a suspicious new agent (and Vaughn's new wife) and more prophecies of Rambaldi, a cross between Da Vinci and Nostradamus whose writings and artifacts became a deadly obsession for Sloane. Seasons four and five went all over the map, introducing a new black-ops unit, a half-sister for Sydney (Mia Maestro), two new agents (Balthazar Getty and Rachel Nichols), and more bad guys before its final showdown between Sydney and Sloane. Due to the show's cancellation and hurriedness to finish season five in a shortened amount of time, some plot points and questions were never answered.

On the DVD
The entire Alias series comes housed in a replica of the Rambaldi box, an intricately designed gold case with red velvet lining, embossed with "IRINA" on the lid just as it was on the show. Inside, each season's discs are housed in its own storybook case, and a small hardcover companion book features the show's cast and crew answering fans' burning questions, particularly the unanswered storylines such as "Who was Deep Throat?" (the anonymous tipster who kept calling Will in season one, whose identity was never revealed). Hidden in the Rambaldi case's false bottom(!) is a bonus disc of material not found in any previous DVD release. The featurette "Case Closed" interviews cast members at the close of the show, with footage of their very last set takes (It's touching to see veteran stars Garber and Kevin Weisman, who plays lovable techie geek Marshall, struggle not to cry while season five newbie Nichols weeps openly). The included fan tributes are amusing to watch; one inventive obsessor hangs a red Japanese lantern above his bed and calls it his own personal "Mueller sphere." Other featurettes explore interviews with the cast after the pilot was filmed; the significance of the number 47 throughout the series; the numerous networks of villains (The Covenant, K. Director, Prophet 5, etc.) But the best quote from the bonus disc comes from an interview with Rifkin, who assesses Sloane's complex motives with: "He's bad. Sloane is bad. Sloan is baaaaad. Sloane. Is. Bad." If you're a die-hard Alias fan and don't own any of the previous seasons on DVD, this one is for you. -- Ellen A. Kim

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2007-07-05

My Alias collection just arrived today. It's amazing! The set looks absolutely amazing - As I live in England, I was expecting delivery to take weeks, and every disc to be scratched upon arrival. When my parcel arrived two days after ordering, I was shocked. I opened the box set, and to my disbelief, not a single disc was scratched!! I had never seen Alias before today - I had only heard good things about it from friends.

If you live in england (or anywhere else for that matter), I thoroughly recommend this DVD box set. Not only does it work out £45 less (including shipping) than the English box set, but it is just great viewing, and amazon.com ships it very quickly.

Overall, this box set truly deserves 5 stars (as does amazon.com). Not only does it look amazing, but it's also really great television, and once you've watched the pilot, you're hooked for life!

Buy this box set today - you won't be disappointed!

3 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for the show minus 2 Stars for the DVD-Box itself.......2007-06-21

I haven't seen Alias before. I thought to myself why not try this show out. It could be ok, couldn't it?. The show is so awesome. I couldn't stop watching. Well I had to stop watching because the person who designed the Box (obviously not Rambaldi) did the worst job in the world. Almost every DVD was scratched beyound playability. I use a PS2 to watch my DVDs. The PS2 couldn't handle all those scratched DVDs. My DVD-Rom Drive on the other hand was able to play most of the discs. Still most doesn't mean all of them. I ordered a replacement. After inspecting the first disk of season one from the replacement-box I was utterly dissapointed at first. It was again damaged. But after looking further I found that only a handfull of discs where scratched this time. So now I swapped the scratched discs from the first set with my second one and have now an almost undamaged Collectors set. Thank you amazon for the quick reply to my request.

Buyers of this set beware. Don't let the price fool you. Scratched DVDs everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Can't stop to watch this........2007-06-03

It's amazing, I can't stop to watch the complete series. The suspence and the filling of what is the next consume me. This is one of the better series that I saw.

5 out of 5 stars It was great.......2007-05-30

At first it was rough because disc 5 from season 1 was not playing, then you sent me another copy and it was missing disc 4 and 5. Then you sent me another one and it is playing fine and I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant !!!.......2007-05-26

by far the most spectacular packaging i've ever seen ! but the content blows all expectations. reading all the reviews i expected the last 3 seasons to be way worse then 1 and 2. although the first half of season five is a bit confusing and strange i still think alias is the best thing to hit the small screen besides 24. season 2 is my personal favourite, but all the others are amazing as well.

i've had this box set shipped all the way to austria, and not a single disc was damaged ! two had minor scratches and one had a strange light spot but all were completely playable. i watched seasons 3-5 back to back in about 2 weeks and and i was completely blown away when i had to leave the stunning world of alias after these 2 weeks when i literally had nothing else in my mind than Sydney's adventures and how it is all going to end.

so my suggestion : BUY BUY BUY this complete collection, before they replace it with a normal standard compilation of 5 box sets.

True to form, at the beginning of its fourth season J.J. Abrams' Alias proceeded to reinvent itself yet again--and the results looked quite a bit like the first season, but with a decided twist. Super agent Sydney Bristow (Emmy nominee Jennifer Garner) found herself once more working for a covert secret-ops group that was "off the books" and headed up by Arvin Sloane (Ron Rifkin) as she was partnered with... Hey, wait, wasn't Sloane a bad guy before? Well, yes, he was, but having been "rehabilitated" from his evil ways, he's now Sydney's new boss--nevermind the fact that he's trampled all over her life in more ways than one--and head of the CIA's new super-secret division, APO (for Authorized Personnel Only), which also includes all of Sydney's old friends, as well as her dad (Victor Garber) and love interest Vaughn (Michael Vartan). But as Sydney and Vaughn struggle with their budding relationship in the wake of his wife's death, and Syd also comes to realize her father may have had quite a bit to do with her mother's abrupt disappearance, a few monkey wrenches are thrown into the works. There's the emergence of South American agent Nadia (Mia Maestro), who's Syd's half sister--and the daughter of Sloane; the reappearance of Syd's nasty nemesis, Anna Espinosa (Gina Torres); a Sloane doppelganger (Joel Grey); and a mysterious cabal intent on harnessing the power of the legendary Rambaldi device.

Alias was definitely all over the map during its fourth season, and a few off-screen factors managed to take their toll onscreen as well. The end of a real-life relationship between Garner and Vartan gave Sydney and Vaughn's scenes a lack of romantic spark, but at the same time a decided tension, as the two warily circled each other and deepened their relationship; they clicked best in the episode "Welcome to Liberty Village," in which the duo infiltrates a Stepford-like suburb as a picture-perfect couple. And the absence of Lena Olin, as Syd's mother, was definitely felt, as her character became a looming presence despite little screen time. Where Alias succeeded this year was in the dramatic impact individual episodes had: "Nocturne" was a captivating tale of Sydney in the throes of deadly hallucinations; "The Orphan" affectingly fleshed out the enigmatic Nadia's background; "In Dreams" (directed by Garner) probed the subconscious of bad guy Sloane, who wasn't as evil as you might think; and "Mirage" forced Sydney to impersonate her mother in her father's fevered dreams. Don't worry, there was plenty of action--especially in the season's final episodes, which prominently featured a deadly Sonia Braga--and despite its ups and downs, Alias remained one of the most intelligent, compelling dramas on television. --Mark Englehart

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars What happened?.......2007-06-23

I'm halfway through season three, and the only thing likable about this season is Sydney's new haircut. It actually hurts to see how much they dumbed it down. I adored this show. And don't anybody dare accuse me of just going along with the crowd; I formed my opinion way before I heard or read anybody else's review, I'm no sheep.

1. The black ops office place is way too bright, happy, expensive, and hollywood-y.

2. The op tech becomes even less realistic. They try and throw a few big words at you and hope that you'll be intellectually satisfied enough to just accept whatever stupid assertion they're trying to cram down your throat. Yeah, we'll just inject this liquid tracking device into this guy's blood system, that's totally plausible.

3. Why is it that this whole section of the CIA relies so heavily on so few agents?

4. The episodes do not interconnect the way that they used to, with each episode building upon the previous ones and filling in another piece of the overall grand puzzle. Now each episode is just a story unto itself, and never a good one. Bad guys have something dangerous. Sydney kicks butt, get the dangerous something away from bad guys. Pauses to snipe at Sloan. End of plot.

5. Virtually no cliffhanger endings.

6. I want Sydney's mom back. Please tell me they bring her back. It's so totally unbelievable that Jack just offed her, and even more so because so little attention is paid to such a huge event.

7. I was so excited about the sister. But she's got no personality to speak of.

8. The characters have lost their duality -- now the bad guys are pure evil, and the good guys are generally pure good. Lauren is a perfect example of this. She displays not a shred of humanity.

9. Bring Will back. Now. And ditch Vaughn, he's boring as hell and way too pretty.

10. Sure, there's a drug that turns you into a vampire. Why not? *rolls eyes*

11. Part of what was so exciting about the previous seasons was never knowing who is listening or what's being bugged, making it excessively difficult for characters to ever really be safe exchanging secrets or intimacies. It inspired all kinds of great paranoia. But in this season Vaughn and Sydney are in a heavily guarded Russian training house (long story) with bugs and cameras everywhere and all they have to do is go into the bathroom, turn on the faucet, and sit there with the door open, fully clothed, as they talk loudly and animatedly about how they're double agents. Because the super-evil bad guys would never be rude enough to put a camera in the bathroom. That's just gross.

I'm not going to give up on this series yet. But I'm very, very tempted to.

5 out of 5 stars Alais, Season Four.......2007-01-28

This is typical Alias: action-packed drama and some romance thrown in. There were many great actors on Alias this season. Jennifer Garner is still the best.

5 out of 5 stars Great Season!.......2007-01-20

This is the only season of Alias That I actually saw on TV, I had just gotten seasons 2 and 3 as Xmas Gifts right before season 4 aired and enjoyed them thoroughly. Watching season 4 was a real treat. Exciting, action packed, I couldn't wait for the DVD release to watch them again.

4 out of 5 stars it's addictive!.......2007-01-10

If you don't have alot of time, don't start watching. It's hard to stop with just one episode.

The third season of Alias found super spy Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner) waking up in Hong Kong with a monster hangover and two years in the future with nary a memory. What's worse, her world has been turned upside-down with the evil Sloane (Ron Rifkin) now a world-famous humanitarian and philanthropist, and, even worse, her true love Vaughn (Michael Vartan) married to a seemingly great gal. Nice way to go back to work, eh? After coming up with one heck of a cliffhanger in season 2, Alias proceeded a bit aimlessly through these 22 episodes, and as a result, the parts were truly greater than the whole. With Lena Olin no longer around as Syd's duplicitous mother, and the addition of admirable yet bland Melissa George as Vaughn's wife Lauren, Garner found herself for the first time without a compelling female foil to play off of. By dividing its focus equally between the quest for the enigmatic Rambaldi device, Syd and Vaughn's now-contentious relationship, and the uncovering of Syd's missing years, Alias lost a little of its power without a larger story arc. The loss of regular cast members Merrin Dungey (Francie/Alison) and Bradley Cooper (Will)--both of whom do make great guest appearances--also divest the show of the personal life that kept Sydney human and approachable. Still, Garner is stellar as always, the plot twists come fast and furious, and secret identities are revealed. This season does have a great panorama of guest actors including Ricky Gervais, Justin Theroux, Djimon Hounsou, David Cronenberg, Quentin Tarantino, Vivica A. Fox, and Isabella Rossellini as Syd's long-lost aunt. --Mark Englehart

It was a family affair in the second season of J.J. Abrams's wonderfully inventive Alias, as super secret agent Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner) came face-to-face with the mother of all super secret agents--her own mother, Irina Derevko (Lena Olin), a former KGB agent presumed dead but alive and more dangerous than ever. After shooting poor Syd, Irina later shows up at the doorstep of the CIA, offering to turn herself in and work for the good guys. But can she be trusted? Alias set up so much duplicity in its second season that it might have been hard to keep track of who was doing what to whom, but thanks to a great ensemble cast, fast-paced writing and direction, and some cannily cast guest stars, Alias rode a stunning emotional roller-coaster and never broke its momentum, even when halfway through the season, the show reinvented itself. With episode 13, "Phase One" (which aired after the Super Bowl to the show's biggest audience), Syd's original nemesis (and employer) SD-6 changes forever, yet the kick-butt agent still finds herself going up against the malevolent leader Sloane (Ron Rifkin) and his ever-changing set of henchmen. Action fans got plenty of fighting, while romantic Alias watchers swooned as Syd and the dashing Vaughn (Michael Vartan) finally consummated their unrequited love.

The critically acclaimed show owed a debt to Buffy the Vampire Slayer for its mix of action, romance, mystery, and moral quandaries, but in this season Alias truly came into its own--with a climax that came as a total shocker and prepped the show for an emotionally volatile third season. Guest stars included the phenomenal Amy Irving as Sloane's wife, Faye Dunaway as a nefarious bigwig, Christian Slater as a kidnapped scientist, and Ethan Hawke as a fellow CIA agent (or rather, two of them), but it was the dysfunctional nuclear family of Syd, Irina, and father Jack (Victor Garber) that gave Alias its heart and its strength, whether the three perfectly cast actors (all Emmy nominated) were just bickering or undertaking deadly hand-to-hand combat. And you thought your family had problems! --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars Alias Season Two.......2007-04-24

When Sydney Bristow learned her mother was a KGB agent, her life was shattered. Season Two picks up right where Season One left off. When Irina Derevko turns herself into CIA custody, Syd's world is turned upside down, filling with betrayal and mystery. Throughout the season, fans are left wondering if Irina has finally turned, or if she is evil. The season starts with a bang and never lets up until the last second of the cataclysmic season finale when everything changes for Sydney Bristow and leaves everyone with their jaw dropped and gasping for breath. This season focuses heavily on Milo Rambaldi, a ancient prophet who created an unknown endgame that threatens the world. This is the season you CAN'T MISS!

season 2 is great! some vary satisfying events unfold - namely (SPOILER!) sydney and vaughan finally get together and the alliance is brought down, so sydney can work for the c.i.a. without being a double agent. i'm a big alias fan! really every season of alias is great, (except for season 5.)

My husband started watching Alias. I was not impressed. But to be polite I watched. After awhile I was also interested. Then we had to have all 5 seasons so we'd be able to keep everything straight.

5 out of 5 stars Alias Season 2: a Classic in television history.......2006-09-22

The second season of Alias crackles with an intensity that unfortunately was never quite replicated in the series again. Don't get me wrong, I loved all 5 seasons of Alias, but season 2 is something special. Lena Olin as Irina brought a whole new element to the show. Jennifer Garner, Victor Garber and Ron Rifkin also excel in this season. For those that have never seen Alias, you are in for a treat, for hardcore fans, season 2 is a brilliant gem.

Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner) is a super (and super sexy) spy, fighting nefarious villains and working for the good guys--or so she thinks. Recruited as a college freshman for espionage work, Sydney found her true calling with SD-6, a secret division of the CIA. When her hunky doctor-boyfriend proposes to her, she decides to let him in on the truth she's not supposed to tell anyone: she's not a grad student with a demanding job for an international bank, but a secret agent who constantly puts her life on the line for the free world. But when SD-6 discovers her security breach, her fiancé is brutally assassinated, and Sydney suddenly finds herself face-to-face with the truth: she's been working for the bad guys. Deciding to become a double agent for the CIA and bring down the evildoers, Sydney gets one more surprise--her estranged father (Victor Garber) is also working for SD-6, and the CIA as well. Welcome to the family, Syd!

Confusing? This is all just in the first episode of Alias, the brainchild of Felicity creator J.J. Abrams that plays like a cross between Buffy the Vampire Slayer and James Bond. With its double-edged tension (how long can Syd play double agent?) and one heck of a MacGuffin (the dreaded Rambaldi device, the mythic creation of a Renaissance genius), the show leads its viewers from episode to episode with visceral, compelling action, not to mention the nascent romance between Syd and her CIA handler, Vaughn (Michael Vartan), and her clashes with her heretofore distant father. Sharp, smart, and always suspenseful, Alias' center was held by the gorgeous Garner, a stellar action heroine and an even better actress who could pull off Sydney's exotic undercover missions and conflicted emotions with equal dexterity. By the end of this first season, which concludes with a breathtaking cliffhanger, you'll be seduced into Alias' world with, happily, no desire to escape. --Mark Englehart

1 out of 5 stars I wish someone would have stopped me..........2007-06-22

Don't start watching this show. Trust me. I'm saving you a large portion of your life that you won't ever get back. Don't get me wrong. Season one is actually a lot of fun. It moves at a good pace and introduces an overall plot line and mythology that is quite intriguing. The following 4 seasons, however, don't deliver. In fact, quite the opposite, they fall maddeningly short. It's clear that JJ Abrams et al had absolutely no idea where the show should end up. The writers apparantly made things up as they went along, painted themselves into about a thousand corners, and were not smart enough to get themsevles out.

A few random thoughts on this series and it's creator:
--> Milo Rambaldi, his artifacts, his "end game", and where the Bristows really fit in will never be satisfactorily explained. Don't expect this, the show's most interesting sub-plot to amount to anything.
--> I hope you perfer shallow pretty-boy male-archetypes like Vaughn more than substantial, real characters like Will. The breif Vaughn reprieve in season 3 where Weiss took more of a leading role in Sydney's life was welcome but all too short.
--> The situations Sydney finds her self in start out ludicrous (but well within the limits of a suspension of disbelief) and only get worse (well beyond said suspension). By season 5 I was yelling at the TV desperately hoping my pleas might change the unchangable.
--> Nobody talks the way these people do...and it's annoying.
--> If this show were a soap opera (which it pretty much is) it would rival Passions for ridiculousness. However, the writers of Passions seem to realize that their product is stupid. I get the feeling that the Alias writers think their doing seriously good work.
--> It's pretty clear JJ Abrams has nothing to do with LOST anymore...evidenced by the fact that LOST is still good.
--> A pregnant field agent Sydney Bristow made me phyisically want to hurt someone, which leads me to my last point...
--> I'd really like to punch JJ Abrams. I think I might get off easy. It would take 100+ episodes of Alias entered as evidence, but I think I could get the judge to see that the battery was warranted.

5 out of 5 stars WARNING: This show is addictive.......2007-06-10

I never watched Alias when it was on television, but everyone I know seems to love it so I thought I would give it a shot. I'm not a Jennifer Garner fan and was doubtful that this show would have any appeal for me. I was so wrong. The first season of Alias is almost too good, and I would definitely say that DVD is the way to watch it. Each episode is action packed and fast paced so that once you start watching it's really hard to make yourself stop. In fact, going to work is just about the only thing that made me turn off the television at night. Get the first season of Alias when you have a long weekend available, because you won't want to step away for even a minute.

3 out of 5 stars Overrated, but Worth a Shot.......2007-04-05

After reading the overwhelming reviews for ALIAS, I bought the first season and was--for the most part--disappointed. With comparisons to classic shows like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "24", I was expecting a lot. Perhaps I would have enjoyed this show more if I hadn't had such high hopes, but what's done is done.

The concept of the show is fine, and the characters develop nicely over the season. And Sidney, let's face it, is not only a good character--she's also eye candy. The biggest problem is the actual episodes. Situations play out quite awkwardly, especially in the first few discs. The action scenes are on point, but the actual reasoning to the missions that Sidney is being sent on are rarely explained and rarely contribute to the overall arc of the season. Sometimes, the music is poignant and adds to the scenes, but often I feel sappy songs are throw in to try to force the viewer to feel a certain way. And without the proper build-up, a viewer can't be forced to react emotionally to the said scenes. I was not convinced.

On the plus side, the season gets better about halfway through. There are six very good episodes this season, starting with the two-part episode, "The Box." McKenas Cole, played perfectly by Quentin Tarantino, was the best villain of the whole season. He should have played a much bigger part than he did. Other good episodes were the following: Q&A, Snowman, Rendezvous, and Almost Thirty Years. "Almost Thirty Years" was the amazing season finale, which made it worth struggling through those first few discs.

Will I ever continue on with Alias? Probably. The second season (new) is insanely overpriced, but I'll most-likely end up dishing out the cash. It won't be for a long while though.

    6/10

This warm, comedic western appeared on televisions a year after Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was a surprise blockbuster. Both lighthearted Westerns follow two outlaws who have won the hearts of the public. In TV bandit version, it's because "they never killed anyone" while being ever-so-charming as they steal from banks and trains. In the pilot episode (which aired as a TV movie in January 1971, followed two weeks later by the series), the premise is set: Hannibal Heyes (Pete Duel) and 'Kid' Curry (Ben Johnson) want to go straight when they discover the governor is offering amnesty, a historical fact. However, it's stipulated they need to go "straight" for a year before amnesty will be given. So they rename themselves Joshua Smith and Thaddeus Jones as they attempt to go straight, but lawmen--unknown of the secret deal--are on their heels. Usually the pair goes out of the way to stop a crime from other bandits. A good double-cross is usually thrown in too. Heyes/Smith is the brainier one with an eye for the ladies. Curry/Jones is more brawny (a relative term), possessing the proverbial "fastest gun in the west." Highlights of the 14 episodes includes "Wrong Train to Brimstone," as the two board a train of detectives looking for Heyes and Curry, and "A Fistful of Diamonds" where we don't know who is conning who. The revolving door of guest stars is pretty impressive. Susan St. James, Earl Holliman, and Forest Tucker appear in the pilot. Later shows find Burl Ives as a gambler, Susan Strasberg as a casino owner, Fernando Lamas as a mentor of Heyes', Keenan Wynn as a stationmaster who captures the bandits, plus Juliet Mills, Patrick Macnee, L.Q. Jones, Slim Pickens, Sam Jaffe, and J.D. Cannon, who appears in several episodes as a detective on the trail. Add those talents to the easygoing charm of the two stars, and even the thinnest story is enjoyable to watch.

This was the first show Glen A. Larson (Magnum, P.I. , Knight Rider) created and produced. His copy of the Butch formula (and the some extent, the previous comedic TV western Maverick) worked well enough for the struggling ABC network to quickly order a second season (the show was especially a hit with the younger set). However, by the end of 1971, the tragic suicide of Duel made the show a dead end, despite the addition of Sally Field and instantly recasting Smith with Roger Davis (who supplied the show's opening narration up to that point). A flash in the pan (50 episodes) seen year later holds up well enough, and has been preserved to supply an excellent picture quality. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars Hoorah For Real Cowboys!.......2007-06-27

Alias Smith & Jones (be still my heart!) is a classic TV Western and I am absolutely thrilled that the first season has become available on DVD. Pete Duel and Ben Murphy were my idols when I was 13 (and impressionable) and I had their faces plastered over my bedroom wall from copies of Tiger Beat! These two charming cowboys captured my imagination and my heart and this first season is a joy to watch. Alias Smith & Jones was never repeated in NZ after the first screening, however I can remember quite vividly many of the plots and more importantly the fabulous guest stars that popped up in each episode. The show was never the same when Pete Duel died tragically and was replaced by Roger Davis, so this first season is very special and I recommend it to all those who enjoyed the good, clean stories, the humour, the outback setting and most importantly the obvious comraderie between Duel and Murphy.

4 out of 5 stars Episode: Never Trust an Honest Man .......2007-06-19

When you watch this episode "Never Trust an Honest Man" you will notice toward the end of the episode they will go up to this old house. And it may look familier to you and it should. It is the house from
the original Psycho movie. I could not beleive it.

5 out of 5 stars A trip down memory lane.......2007-06-14

I was an avid fan of Alias Smith & Jones, going so far as to keep a scrapbook of all things to do with the show, as well as it's stars. It's so wonderful to be able to see the old episodes again. Loved it then, still love it now!

Jennifer Garner's lips grow more Angelina-esque every year. In the romantic comedy Catch and Release, Garner (Alias, 13 Going On 30) plays Gray Wheeler, a young woman whose fiance dies unexpectedly before the wedding, leaving Gray unable to afford her home--so she moves in with her fiance's best friends, Sam (Kevin Smith, director of Clerks and Dogma) and Dennis (Sam Jaeger, Lucky Number Slevin). But the presence of another old friend named Fritz (Timothy Olyphant, Deadwood) leads to the unveiling of a secret: Gray's fiance had a child with another woman. Catch and Release lacks the clear story structure that most romantic comedies are built on, but trades it for a richer sense of the ambiguities of human relationships. Garner, though lovely and personable, is a bit bland--fortunately, she's surrounded by actors with all kinds of edges, including Smith (who shows an unexpected and uncloying earnest side), Fiona Shaw (from the Harry Potter movies) as the fiance's grieving mother, and Juliette Lewis (Cape Fear), who demonstrates once again her powers as a fearless and surprising actress. Catch and Release is an uneven movie, with a remarkably elegant visual style that sometimes clashes with the workmanlike dialogue, but it can't be written off as the same old Hollywood claptrap. Though a happy ending is inevitable, the path it takes has some surprising turns and flashes of unexpected emotional depth.- Bret Fetzer

Catch and Release [Blu-ray]. Although we enjoyed this film, it was certainly light weight. Felt the ending could have been stronger - especially since we knew a change was coming for the entire movie. On the other hand, when you've dealt with business, office politics, and problems all week long, this film is a keeper for those times when you just do NOT want to think. Jennifer Garner is a delight in anything she does, so it's not a bad film. Just light, blu-ray film. Sometimes there is not a thing wrong with that!!

4 out of 5 stars Sweet and Enchanting.......2007-05-14

I truly enjoyed this movie and chose it on the merit of the actor, Luis Tosar. I found the idea of this movie really different and the storyline was easy to relate; there have been a few communities in the past with a lack of females and the council had to advertise. I especially loved the story between Damian and Patricia. What I enjoyed most was the intricacies of the movie - the way the rest of the community react to the 'flowers' would be as expected in any small community; the bias and the racism (if not overt, subtle as it really is in the outside world) and the expectations of the 'flower' and the men cultivating them. It's a nice change from the norm....

    5 out of 5 stars wonderful film.......2005-12-09

This is a wonderful movie which offers a different view of Spain, far from Almodóvar's or Amenábar's films. I first saw it in Spain when it first came to theaters, and now I own the Region2/PAL DVD version, so I cannot offer any technical information about this Region 1 DVD. But I love the film, as did many critics who have highlighted the good pace of the film, the story, and the performances: a good balance between experienced actors (José Sancho, Luis Tosar) and newcomers (Marilin Torres, Lisette Mejía).

The story takes place in Santa Eulalia, a small town lost in inner Spain. The locals, concerned about the lack of females in town and the risk of the town disappearing in the future, organizes a bus trip for single women to visit and meet the bachelors in town. The film focuses on three women and their local romantic partners: Patricia, a woman from the Dominican Republic, who runs away from Madrid, where she is illegally working, to look for economic stability for her children; Marirrosi, who comes from Bilbao, has a good job as a nurse, and an independent and comfortable life, but is lonely; and later on, Milady, a young Cuban who has left Havana looking for a different world. They try to find happiness with some of the men in Santa Eulalia. Patricia meets Damián, a shy farmer who lives with her hostile mother; Marrirosi gets involved with Alfonso, a happy horticulturalist; and Milady with Carmelo, a wealthy middle-aged builder who regularly goes to Cuba as a "sexual tourist." The movie focuses on these three relationships, born out of mutual need, and the similarities and differences among the six main characters. Only one of the relationships will survive at the end.

The contrast between the highly colorful and extrovert newcomers - the flowers of the title - and the dull, dry villagers is almost extreme, and several problems soon arise from the conflict between these two groups. The movie reflects on several of these issues: immigration, culture shock, love, injustice, racism, and materialism, among others.

This is Icíar Bollaín's second film as director. She is better known for her work as an actress: more than 15 films to date, including "El sur" (1983) by Victor Erice, and "Malaventura" (1988) by Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón. For her, this movie is mostly a reflection on racism and immigration. The film is inspired in a true story: the village of Plan (Huesca, Spain) organized a caravan of single women for the bachelors in 1985, after watching on television William Wellman's "Westward the Women" (1951).

Josiane Balasko wrote, directed, and costars in this lightweight French comedy about a lesbian (Balasko) who falls for a housewife (Victoria Abril) seething over the philandering of her husband (Alain Chabat). The latter is outraged about his spouse's same-sex affair, but over time, the two rivals make peace with the situation--causing Abril's character to throw a hissy fit of her own. This is a cute film that becomes, thank goodness, more interesting as it goes along, challenging comfortable notions about love as a haven from other challenges to the heart. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Fun and stylish.......2007-05-07

A feelgood movie that only the French could make. Or maybe the Italians. I saw it on TV and hugged myself with so much glee I bought the DVD. The clothes are stylish, the setting sunny and the outcome just right. Alain Chabat is marvellous as the spoiled but charming cuckold, and the two women are perfectly cast for sparks to fly. A romantic comedy for the 21st century.

    5 out of 5 stars 2nd best French comedy I ever saw........2007-02-07

See this only if you are not a homophobic homohating person or with someone who is. It is delightfully funny. Next to Les Visiteurs, the largest ever attended comedy film in France, this movie is one big laugh after another. The movie holds your attention throughout its play and does not drag at any spot. It has a story line flow which is easily followed. Well worth the view. I have seen it twice. Now shopping for it on DVD to show to my new wife.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Movie.......2007-01-10

This movie is the greatest. The story is just fabulous and the sound track is gorgeous and romantic. Alain Shabat, who plays the male lead, & husband, is one of the most talented actors I have ever seen. His facial expressions, and body language are perfect. I love this movie. I watch it again, and again, whenever I want to laugh and be happy.
If you are a woman, and you have been "wronged" by your man, this movie will make you feel exceedingly happy, when you see the tables turned on the cheating husband. It is so, so entertaining. It's my favorite movie of all time!

    3 out of 5 stars French Twist.......2006-01-31

Plot was a little far fetched for American viewers. Someone who understands European mentality can appreciate it more.

    3 out of 5 stars Very funny!!.......2005-11-11

I liked this movie alot! It was very entertaining! Probably the only thing I didn't like about it was that the dyke the girl is seeing is old and ugly! My girlfriend usually doesn't like movies if she doesn't think the characters are attractive but this is is just to weird and funny to pass up!
