Writer David Mamet created two engrossing and memorable characters, played by Alec Baldwin as the urbane fashion photographer and Anthony Hopkins as a reserved and intellectual billionaire. They find themselves teamed up against a giant Kodiak bear, and their own inner demons, when lost together in the Alaskan wilderness. There is a lot going on in this picture, as the subject matter includes male rivalry, the isolationism of extreme wealth, and, most conspicuously, the survival of the fittest. Mamet's script, which sounds a little too arch in spots, is well served by New Zealand director Lee Tamahori, who knows how to capture beauty and brutality in one frame. Although the themes are enormous in scope, they are well balanced. One rarely overpowers the other, nor does the achingly beautiful scenery overshadow the acting. Even if you do not like the intellectualism of the dialogue, there are some great scenes with the bear. --Rochelle O'Gorman

GREAT DVD AND A MUST HAVE !!!!!!

Ladder matches are painful and fun to watch and this DVD doesn't disappoint.

Disc 1 -

1) Jake Roberts vs. Big Daddy Ritter (Stampede Wrestling 1979): Not much of a match here as both wrestlers didn't utilize the ladder much at all and the pace was slow. However, the ladder that was used is quite humorous and is worth a look.

2) Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels (1992): Decent action all around, but HBK didn't utilize the ladder as well as he would have later on his career.

3) Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon (Summerslam 1995): Great chemistry displayed by both wrestlers when they are actually wrestling, and some good spots when they used the ladder.

4) Triple H vs. The Rock (Summerslam 1998): The Rock lays the smack down on Triple H and Triple H does the same. Great match.

5) Edge & Christian vs. New Brood (No Mercy 1999): Fast-paced action with great uses of the ladder. A classic.

6) Dudley Boyz vs. Edge & Christian vs. Hardy Boyz (1st Ever TLC Match Summerslam 2000): THIS IS THE BEST MATCH ON THIS 3 DISC COLLECTION! This match was out of control from the very beginning. Lots of "ow!" moments plus three ABSOLUTELY SICK spots. Bubba Ray Dudley flies through four tables! Jeff Hardy does a Swanton Bomb off a 20 foot ladder and goes through a table. Matt Hardy falls off the ladder inside the ring and lands outside on a table. This match was ridiculous and I was surprised all of these guys made it out without any serious injuries.

7) 3 Count vs. Jung Dragons vs. Jamie Knoble & Evan Karagias (WCW, Starrcade 2000): Good action with an innovative use of some ladders at the end.

8) Chris Benoit vs. Chris Jericho (Royal Rumble 2001): An average ladder match , but one of the best spots I've ever seen when Benoit flies through the ropes to spear Jericho, but Jericho nails him with a chair.

Disc 2 -

1) Edge & Christian vs. Dudley Boyz vs. Hardy Boyz (TLC II, Wrestlemania 17): Had about the same results as the first TLC match, but Matt Hardy and Bubba Ray both go through four tables this time! Jeff Hardy once again does a Swanton Bomb off a 20 Foot Ladder (how can he still wrestle?). Rhino, Spike Dudley, and Lita all get involved in this match and all do some nice spots. Another TLC match, another trainwreck!

2) Edge & Christian vs. Chris Jericho & Chris Benoit vs. Hardy Boyz vs. Dudley Boyz (Smackdown 2001): This is a Smackdown match, but with PPV action! This is the match where Benoit breaks his neck after doing a diving headbutt outside the ring. Fast-paced action with good bumps = success.

3) Christian vs. Edge (No Mercy 2001): This was a disappointing match since it was very slow-paced. There were some nice spots at the end, but overall mediocre.

4) Eddie Guerrero vs. Rob Van Dam (Raw 2002): Another TV match with PPV action. Good action with RVD taking a lot of painful bumps and Eddie at point does a nice athletic spot off the top of the ladder.

5) Undertaker vs. Jeff Hardy (Raw 2002): Taker takes some damage from the ladder, but Jeff Hardy gets punished for most of the match. Taker admires Jeff's courage at the end of the match.

6) Kane & The Hurricane vs. RVD & Jeff Hardy vs. Bubba Ray Dudley & Spike Dudley vs. Chris Jericho & Christian (Raw 2002): The Hurricane wasn't in this match. Good PPV action here with Jeff Hardy doing yet another Swanton Bomb off the top of a ladder outside the ring.

7) Chris Jericho vs. Christian (Unforgivin 2004): Decent action with Jericho doing most of the good work.

Disc 3 -

1) Chris Benoit vs. Chris Jericho vs. Edge vs. Shelton Benjamin vs. Christian vs. Kane (1st Ever Money in the Bank Ladder Match, Wrestlemania 21): Shelton Benjamin stole the show here doing some really athletic moves including the Spiderman jump onto the ladder out of nowhere. Great action and lots of sick bumps makes this a classic.

2) Eddie Guerrero vs. Rey Mysterio (Summerslam 2005): Great chemistry by both wrestlers with some innovative uses of the ladder not seen on the first two discs.

3) Edge vs. Matt Hardy (Raw 2005): This match was fast-paced from the very beginning and they do some nice spots too. Great effort by both wrestlers.

4)Edge vs. Ric Flair (TLC match, Raw 2006): Decent action, but made entertaining with Ric Flair's crimson mask and a good table spot.

5) John Cena vs. Edge (Unforgiven 2006): I knew Edge would do his part in this match, but was unsure of Cena. Cena ended up suprising me with some sweet spots off the ladder. At the end, Cena does the FU on Edge from a ladder and Edge goes through two tables!

6) Jeff Hardy vs. Johnny Nitro (Raw 2006): Good action when Jeff Hardy is doing his thing, but the match slowed down when Nitro was in control. However, Nitro did a good job of receiving some punishment.

7) Paul London & Brian Kendrick vs. MNM vs. Hardys vs. William Regal & Dave Taylor (Armageddon 2006): Great action delivered by everyone with some sick bumps, including Joey Mercury getting his nose broken after getting it destroyed via a ladder! He rolled to the outside of the ring where blood was pouring everywhere and his face was just a mess. That definitely was not fake!

Overall, this is one of the best WWE DVDs to come out and it's well worth the money. The replay value is high.

Excellent DVD Presentation...though not complete........2007-06-27

I viewed this DVD with interest and found it very satisfying. The ladder matches were shown in their entirety without cuts or editing. However, sadly, it does not include what was, perhaps, the first ladder match in professional wrestling. This occurred in 1962 when Ray "Blond Bomber" Stevens (also known as "The Crippler") went against Pepper Gomez at San Francisco's Cow Palace. For this angle, Stevens delivered his vaunted Bombs Away knee drop from off the top of the ladder landing on Gomez's throat to win the match. This was an electrifying moment for the fans which certainly helped to set the tenor for Stevens' dominance in the Bay Area as top heel during the entire 1960s decade. The reason for not including this match in the set was probably due to no available film of the match in any archives, which I think is very sad.

In light of the murder suicide of one of the WWE's most famous "wrestlers", isn't it time to recognize that this stuff is toxic. This so-called entertainment is toxic to all who see it and practice it.

EXCELLENT DOCUMENTARY!.......2007-06-17

This was produced after Elvis died, so it includes footage taken from earlier productions, including "THAT'S THE WAY IT IS" and "ELVIS ON TOUR",and there's also some footage from "ELVIS IN CONCERT 1977". The bonus on this documentary is to see some of the upstairs and inside of Graceland, as it was when Elvis died- all in red. Also, there's lots of Elvis footage of home movies and karate demonstrations which are wonderful to see. This is a terrific production, and one that should be in every Elvis fan's collection. The original theatrical release, which is different from the home video version, is unedited and has Elvis talking with the boys, making some "off color" remarks. It's great!

i am a 26 year old huge elvis fan and have to say this is the best Documentary of Elvis ever made along with a recreation of August 16 1977
which gives you a real look at the UPSTAIRS of GRACELAND along wih ELVISES BEDROOM and BATHROOM in which he died you get to see the inside of GRACELAND with RED CARPET LINDA THOMPSON'S DECORATIONS.You also get to see a rare LIVE performance from the CBS special in June 1977 Elvis in Concert in which Elvis forgets the words to Are you lonsome tonight as heard on the CD. GREAT BUY JUST TO SEE UPSTAIRS OF GRACELAND AND BEFORE PRICILLA CAME IN AND CHANGED THE GRACELAND ELVIS LAST SAW.

Best Elvis Documentary finally coming to DVD.......2007-05-22

This is Elvis is a Documentary that traces the life of Elvis from his early days in Tupelo and Memphis, his audition for Sam Phillips at Sun records, his first rush of fame, his early TV apperances, the contraversy over his performing style, his army years and his first meeting with Pricilla, his movie years, his 1968 comeback, his touring years in the 1970, up to his death in 1977. This is elvis combines actual footage of Elvis with reenactments with actors representating him at 11, 23, and 42 years old. It is narrated by Ral Donner, an Elvis impersonator who sounds excatly like him. Also other people in Elvis life, including former girlfreind Linda Tompson and road manager Joe Espisito, also provide narration.
As noted in previous reviews, you do get to see upstairs at Graceland, as well as how it looked when Elvis died. Scenes from his early TV apperances, including the Milton Berle performance that caused a scandal as well as the "above the waist" performance on Ed Sullivan. Concert scenes from his 1968 show, Thats the way it is, Aloha from Hawaii, and from his last filmed show in 1977, are here as well. The 1977 show has never been on DVD, manily because Elvis was in bad health and it was just seven weeks before his death. Still he sings a good verison of My Way.
This DVD set will include the original Theactral version from 1981, and the version that has been on VHS that had more footage. As noted in a review, Elvis does make some off color remark to his friends about a woman he had been with the night before, in the home verison, Ral Donner overdubed something less off color. Also the theatracial verson, in the 1977 concert, had the version of Are You Lonesome Tonight, where Elvis fouls up the spoken part of the song saying plus tax etc. In the home version, it is replaced with Love Me.
Thanks to The Elvis Presley Estate for finally releasing this on DVD. It is a must for all Elvis fans, young and old.

As far as ice-skating movies go (or those that prominently feature the cold-bladed sport), this romantic movie is one of the best, thanks to utterly charming performances by underrated actors D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly. The couple play, respectively, a washed-up hockey player and a prima-donna skater who end up in doubles figure skating together at the Winter Olympics. Of course, the mismatched pair fall in love. In between, there's a lot of verbal sparring, talk of toe picks, and surprisingly skillful directing by Paul Michael Glaser (Kazaam, The Air Up There). Direction here is critical--unlike in Flashdance, where the dancing was done in the shadows, face and feet obviously shot separately--and The Cutting Edge credibly highlights the actors and their professional stand-ins. This is such a fun, sweet story that the facts the film takes liberties with--including the alacrity with which a hockey player takes to Olympic-level figure skating--are easily forgivable. --N.F. B-Grade Everything.......2007-06-17

This is one of those films you find yourself laughing at--not because it's got good humor in it, but because of all the things it does wrong. The script is corny, the acting poor, and the story line trite and uninvolving.They don't even show any extended figure skating scenes, which would have at least added a nice note as that is always fun to watch.

The dialogue between the two leads is supposed to be snappy, but with the wooden way they deliver it, it's just dopey (I'm surprised these two actors ever worked again after this film came out...) The two skaters bicker non-stop through the whole movie and then are supposed to fall in love at the end, though I didn't buy it for a minute. They are both unlikeable, as characters and as actors, so I didn't care what happened to them in the end...unless they would have fallen through the ice, which would have ended this dull ice skating movie on the proper note.

Magnifico!.......2007-05-17

English has words for most emotions, but sometimes Italian is more effective. I saw this movie for the first time seventeen years after it came out, and I found it exactly "Magnifico".
Ice-skating has always represented in my immaginary one of the forms of "gracefullness" that can be acheived in competitive sports. Another is surely gymnastics.
This very well written movie deals with a beautiful and fascinating sport, but also adds to this advantage a story of failures, dreams, efforts and "Great Expectations" (Kate gives Doug this book for Christmas). The plot somewhat resembles "The Taming of the Shrew", with a femine character that is whitty, sassy and tempremental and a male character that steadily somehow tames her. However, we don't live in Skakespeare's times anymore, so the parity of sexes must be respected, with also the man giving in at last to love.
Nothing is more romantic than the meeting of disparities, and this is exactly what happens here.
A pretty, talented, rich, spoiled and introverse young figure skater, Kate Mosely, finds herself without a partner. Thanks to the long eye of her Russian trainer, she has the occasion of trying out the retired hockey player Doug Dorsey, that slightly intimidated by the girl and the situation, but at the same time desiring to skate again and compete decides to pair up with her in the attempt to qualify for the Olympic games.
One of the points of force of this movie is the dialogue between the couple which is fast, humoristic and a pleasure to follow. Another is the evident attraction between the actors which goes right to the heart.
The scenography is also very good, with the winter scenes that add magic to the atmosphere and the training scenes with the skaters alone on the rink.
Obviously some of the sport scenes are impossible, as skaters have rightly pointed out, and the plot resolves as expected, but I believe this movie can be classified as a romantic classic and will stand the test of time.

People may say that My Best Friends Wedding was the best romantic comedy of the 90's, but I have to say that this one is my all-time favorite! Julia Roberts is great and banked a lot of bucks for the movie studios, however The Cutting Edge proves you don't need big-name stars for a film to excel on all levels. You can read what this film is about already, I just wanted to say that if you have overlooked this or if it is not in your collection already, you are missing out! 5 stars!

Although it's been three years since we last saw Bridget (Renée Zellweger), only a few weeks have passed in her world. She is, as you'll remember, no longer a "singleton," having snagged stuffy but gallant Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at the end of the 2001 film. Now she's fallen deeply in love and out of her neurotic mind with paranoia: Is Mark cheating on her with that slim, bright young thing from the law office? Will the reappearance of dashing cad Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) further spell the end of her self-confidence when they're shoved off to Thailand together for a TV travel story? If such questions also seem pressing to you, this sequel will be fairly painless, but you shouldn't expect anything fresh. Director Beeban Kidron and her screenwriters--all four of them!--are content to sink matters into slapstick, with chunky Zellweger (who's unflatteringly photographed) the literal butt of all jokes. Though the star still has her charms, and some of Bridget's social gaffes are amusing, the film is mired in low comedy--a sequence in a Thai women's prison is more offensive than outrageous--with only Grant's rakish mischief to pull it out of the swamp. --Steve Wiecking

What happened? Everything that was great about the first movie went terribly wrong in this one. The first Bridget Jones film was centered on Bridget and Mark Darcy "finding" each other, sorting out their misconceptions, and ultimately falling in love. It is a modern re-telling of the core plot of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice: Girl meets guy at party, guy makes disparaging remark to girl, girl spends majority of film (and miniseries) disliking guy, is briefly deceived by villain (Daniel Cleaver, or in the case of P&P, Mr. Wickham), and eventually realizes guy is truly her perfect match. And to top it all off, girl and guy share passionate kiss at the end of the film (and the miniseries). Great formula, right? And then came the second movie...

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason is supposed to depict the aftermath, or the "happily ever after" that in this case turns out not to go so "happily." Bridget and Mark Darcy have already been together for a while at the start of the film, but all of the chemistry that they had in the first film is completely gone. They seem almost estranged. Mark Darcy is just as icy as he was in the first film, only now that he's got the girl, there's no excuse for it. It just makes him seem closed off. Bridget is even more insecure than she was in the first film and gets into even more scrapes, only they don't seem as funny this time around. Instead of making her feel more secure, her relationship with Mark Darcy appears to have had the opposite effect. She comes off more as a train wreck than as a delightfully accident prone single girl. Even in their more intimate moments, they don't really seem like a couple (the ski slope scene in which Bridget realizes that she might be pregnant due to "all the weeks of uninterrupted sex they've had" begs the question, "When, exactly?"). I watched the film thinking, "How did these two get together?"

And then there's the plot. Gone are the hilarious conversations between Bridget and her friends in the pub, and gone is the subplot involving Bridget's parents. The parents are hardly featured in this film, and the friends only sporadically. Instead, we have Shazzer, Jed, cocaine, Thailand, way too much on-screen time with Daniel Cleaver, and a beautiful young lawyer who turns out to be a lesbian in love with Bridget. Huh? It's like one of those films where they just throw everything in together and take whatever emerges from the mess. To make it even worse, the mood of the film is inconsistent. It starts off attempting to be funny, then gets very dark after Bridget is imprisoned in Thailand on drug charges. All of a sudden we've gone from comedy to drama, then back to comedy after she is released. The film is a roller coaster, and in more ways than one.

Overall, it is simply a bad sequel, as so many other sequels have been before it. Stick to the first movie. At least you'll still have the "promise" that something great will happen.

This movie is good but would like to have the alternative scenes put in to make the movie a little darker. It would make the ending that much more sweeter.

Unworthy Follow-Up.......2007-03-18

The neuroses and insecurities displayed by the Bridget Jones character were charming when she was lonely and single in the first movie. Now that she is involved in a loving relationship, these same characteristics make her seem controlling, desperate, and sad. It is much harder to like Bridget in this movie or to feel sympathy for or identify with her.

And her one-dimensional friends from the first movie are downright annoying in this sequel. They seem to exist solely to focus their attention on Bridget, and they prove over and over again in this film that they don't even have her best interests at heart.

If you were a fan of the first, you may want to steer clear of this one. Or at least go in with tempered expectations.

Saw them for the first time........2007-02-01

I saw them for the first time live in Minneapolis at the Target Center. We ended up in the center of the ring. The show was incredible and left everyone wanting more (although 2+ hours was plenty.) I have listened to U2 for a number of years. I bought Joshua Tree when it came out and some others albums throughout the years. The DVD is really good, but does not compare to seeing it live in person. If they are coming near you, I highly recommend getting some tickets.

Having Ric Flair open up a ppv to me is just disrespectful. This opening match to me was better than the main event and way better than the handicap match. Also mostly clean wins, even for the heels.

Ric Flair vs. Carlito. They got a good amount time to put on a very good opener. Even at his age Flair can always get the crowd pumped. This man deserves another Heavyweight Title run in my opinion. And Carlito is sticking with ground base wrestling which is a good thing to me. The high flying style just doesn't fit him. 4/5

Mcmahons and Umaga vs. Lashley
The only reason I dont truly hate this match is because its short. Lashley is just garbage and thats all it is to it. What I hate the most is how Umaga is being used now. He went from the unstoppable, undefeated monster, with victories over Flair, Triple H, Michaels, and Kane. To a mere jobber for a newcomer and Lashley's whooping boy. It seems he cant even beat Lashley without the Mcmahons in his corner. P*sspoor match, graced with a quick ending. 2/5 and the biggest low point of the whole ppv.

CM Punk vs. Elijah Burke
A pretty decent match but I expected more from these two. It was a bit too long and seemed to drag. Even at times the crowd wasn't even in to it. 3/5

Shawn Michaels vs. Randy Orton
These two have had better. But this wasn't even a match. Randy jumped Michaels earlier. Plus Michaels was selling his concussion that he got a week ago to the fullest. The match was fast as he**. That RKO at the end was murder though. 3/5

The Hardy's vs Cade and Murdoch
Once again the Hardy's deliver but this match is kind of weak next to other matches. Cade and Murdoch in my opinion are underrated. I've enjoyed most of their tag team matches. The only thing I'm not feeling is Murdoch trying to pull off the Canadian Destroyer. Please let Petey Williams execute his own move thank you. Still a pretty solid match. 3/5

Edge vs. Batista

Why is Batista still getting title shots every ppv?! I can think of anyone who can match Edge's style in the ring and have spectacular matches. This match was mediocre at best and could have easily been on Smackdown. Nothing special here at all. 2.5/5

Chris Benoit vs. MVP 2 out of 3 falls
This match saved my life. It fell very short from their previous matches. Especially the one they had at Wrestlemania. Still it was pretty good and they blended very well together. Lots of counters and submissions were utilized. For me, this was the match of the night. 4/5

Cena vs. Khali
What the he11 is Khali doing main eventing?! My god if it wasn't for the length of this match, I don't think I could have watched this all the way through. The only high point was Cena's resourcefullness to chop down The Great Khali using the ring steps. Otherwise, nothing too special about this match either. 2.5/5.

This ppv was a step down from the last one. And this is proof the wrong guys is being pushed. Hopefully the wwe bookers step their game up.

Judgment Day 2007 Dissappoints.......2007-06-06

This years's Judgment Day Was As Disappoinitng. Even when it had all the 3 brands but still didn't live up to the ecpectations.

Ric flair def.carlito. Flair made carlito tap out after giving a figure four leg lock.
CM pank def. that black guy. Punk when after giving his finishing move.
Lashley def. mcmahons n umaga. Lashley pinned shane after giving a slam. But vince had a story to say that he didn't pin him so that he is still the ecw world champion.
Hardz def. cade n murdock. Jeff pinned murdock after giving swanton bomb.hardyz retained the world tag team championship.
Randy orton n Hbk Fought in a no contest. reason hbk collapsed after suffering an injury.
Edge Def Batista. Edge won by giving a school boy to batista and retained his world heavyweight championship.
John cena def the great khali. Cena made khali tap after giving an STFU and retained his WWE championship.

Overall An Average PPV At Best.

1. Carlito vs. Rick Flair- I thought this was an okay match to start off the show. I was expecting this match to be a little better conxsidering carlito had just turned heeel again and I was expecting a little bit of a better performance out of him. This match was really slow with Carlito working on flairs arm a lot. Flair was able to fight back and get the win but this one was to slow for me and not enough action for a carlito match. Winner Carlito. Match Rating 5.5/10.
2. Vince McMahon and Shane McMahon and Umaga vs. Bobby Lasley for the ECW World Title- So we move on from a disappointing match to a match that sucked even worse. I was expecting a decent match but this was worse than backlash. The entrances were longer than the match itself. Also the ending was pointless because even though Lashley won the match McMahon said Lashley had to pin him so the match meant nothing. Skip this crap ECW has turned god awful. Winner Bobby lashley. Match Rating 1.5/10.
3. CM Punk vs. Elige Burke- So we finally get a match that is decent and go figure its an ECW match. These two had been fighting and feuding for a while. This was just a solid match with some hard hitting wrestling. Good match. Winner CM Punk. Match Rating 7/10.
4. Randy Orton vs. Shawn Michales- Here we go again. Another crap match. The thing is this one could have been good but Shawn Michales was hurt. So instead of taking this match off the card and putting on a smackdown tag match we leave this on the card and of course it sucks. This match was like 4 minutes long but there was no action at all. I was happy to see orton get the win in this hometown but another bad decision to book this match when Shawn was hurt. Winner Randy Orton. Match Rating 2/10.
5. The Hardy Boyz vs. Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch for the world tag team titles- This was a good match. In fact in my opinion this was the match of the night. I really liked the way this was set up. The card was doing bad so far and these guys steeped there game up. I think about a 15 minute match which was pleanty of time for these guys. Lots of high flying moves by the hardys which made this match fast pace. There were tons of near falls in this match including a spinebuster that I thought the hardys had lost there titles. Still a great match. Winner and still World Tag team champs the hardy boyz. Match Rating 8/10.
6. Edge vs. Batistia for the WHT- This match I was looking forward to considering this was coming off edges hot title win and just a lot of hype behind it. Unfortunately this did not live up to the hype. One reason is because this match was only given 9 minutes. That is smackdowns title match only 9 minutes. This was worked on mostly batistias leg. Batistia fought back hit a spine buster but out of know were Edge rolled him up for the win which was a huge shock. Winner and still WHC Edge. Match Rating 5.5/10.
7. Chris Beniot vs. MVP for the US title- This was another match that I was looking forward to this one was accualty not that bad. They had so many great matches coming into this one so I was expecting a match of the year did not get that at all but this was still not that bad of a match. MVP controlled this whole match which was the main reason it was hard to watch at times. MVP won the first and second fall which was why I did not like this match as much cause it was not competitive. Still a good match though. Winner and new US Champ MVP. Match Rating 7.5/10.
8. John Cena vs. The Great Kalih for the WWE title- This was the third main event title match that sucked. That's right I do not know why this was the main event or why Kalhi was in the main event. There were so many things wrong whit this match including that the match was only 8 minutes long. Kalhi controlled this whole match except for the very end Cena hit the steps in Kalhis knee and than brought him in and Kalhi tapped. This was a horrible ending considering cena never even affected Kalhi and Cena pulls out another BS win. Lokk I do not like Kalhi but I am sick of Cena winning every time. This ending sucked and so did the ppv. Winner and still WWE champ John Cena. Match Rating 5/10.

Well that raps up another. I would give Judgment day 2007 a grade of 42/80 which means this is a awful ppv. This is the first time in a long time that I have ever gave out that grade but when all of your main titles combine for a total of 20 minutes that is sad and just a poor booked event. As a Media teacher, this DVD is an excellent resource for my students - it outlines the history of narrative through montage, from its earliest days, through 'important' developments of such directors as Griffiths and Eisenstein. It also explores the function of a variety of styles and techniques that have become conventions in specific genres. Perhaps most valuably it has some of the 'greats' of directing and editing discussing the editing process. While it is Amero-centric in terms of its subject matter, it is entirely appropriate for my students.

Power of the Cut!.......2007-04-04

There is much you can say about this except Awesome! It is great to see some of the behind the scenes that is needed to understand what an editor does. I have to admit, I didn't have any idea as to what the editors job was and now I do. Wonderful story told the way it should. There are some foul mouth parts but the message that it gives is worth it. If you are a video production instructor, this is a MUST HAVE resource.

It's one of a kind doumentary about editing. It enhances the importance of the craft in the making of movies. It covers the history and different cutting styles, interviews and plenty of film clips. I was hungry for more, so far there is not another documentary on the subject.

A useful historic overview.......2006-11-05

Although I had hoped, judging from the title, that this movie would delve into the craft of editing, which it really doesn't, it does offer an interesting historic overview of the increasingly important role of the editor. The interviewed editors and directors are all leading Hollywood folks, and it's Hollywood's history all the way. One could spend lots of time reviewing the many clips from major films that are used as illustrations and learn a lot from them.
What I liked least, is the high percentage of violent and fast-cut film clips used. Towards the end, several editors speak about how today's youger generations can follow ad absorb the sensory overload, and "that's what they want." Well, that's Hollywood for you.

Writer David Mamet created two engrossing and memorable characters, played by Alec Baldwin as the urbane fashion photographer and Anthony Hopkins as a reserved and intellectual billionaire. They find themselves teamed up against a giant Kodiak bear, and their own inner demons, when lost together in the Alaskan wilderness. There is a lot going on in this picture, as the subject matter includes male rivalry, the isolationism of extreme wealth, and, most conspicuously, the survival of the fittest. Mamet's script, which sounds a little too arch in spots, is well served by New Zealand director Lee Tamahori, who knows how to capture beauty and brutality in one frame. Although the themes are enormous in scope, they are well balanced. One rarely overpowers the other, nor does the achingly beautiful scenery overshadow the acting. Even if you do not like the intellectualism of the dialogue, there are some great scenes with the bear. --Rochelle O'Gorman

"The Edge"- The Brilliant Billionairre.......2007-06-08

The edge of your seat is where you'll be once the movie gets rolling. It's a nail-biting ride based on survival of the "smartest". Don't misunderstand...there's not a slow start. This movie merely takes a brief time to set an interesting background which is crucial to the plot. Anthony Hopkins is brilliant, as usual. Hopkins plays an extremely well-read Billionairre who "knows everything" according to his wife, Elle MacPherson, who of course plays a super-model. There are plenty of twists and surprises to keep you guessing to the very end. I found the last scene to be a little less than ideal. It's somewhat confusing and unnecessary. It is also a little unrealistic. Also, I still don't see the point of the title, "The Edge". Probably just my lack of imagination. Other than that, this movie is well worth the money! Both thumbs up!

"The Edge" is a classic suspense movie that maintains high suspense for the viewer until the very end. I think Anthony Hopkins was as impressive in this movie as in the "Silence of the Lamb".

If you like adventure, the great outdoors and, or course, Anthony Hopkins, then you will love this movie. There are very few movies that I will watch more then once and this is one of those movies. It is a very good movie that I recommend highly.

who is the most dangerous ?.......2007-05-10

One of the questions to ask in this hair-raising movie is who is actually the most dangerous.....the bear or Robert Green. As frightening as it is, at least the bear is open in his aggressiveness and violence....Green is sneaky and deceitful. He leads you to believe he really is a friend to Charles...Another question to ask is why didn't he bury Stephen's bloody pant leg like Charles had asked him to? He wanted the bear to kill Stephen.....so there would be no witness when it came time for Green to kill Charles. He probably also thought that in killing Stephen, the bear then, would leave Charles and himself alone.

Best Action and Drama For Me........2007-05-07

I love this movie, it was a great acting on Anthony Hopkins and Alex Bawlin. I like the bear and his bad self. I wouldn't give up my CD for any other movie.

Also known as The Cutting Edge 2, Going for the Gold is both a sequel to and a remake of the 1992 film with Moira Kelly and D.B. Sweeney. After their skating careers came to an end, Kate and Doug opened a rink. In addition, he became a sports commentator and she became a coach. Jackie (Christy Carlson Romano, Even Stevens, Kim Possible) is their daughter. Like her parents, she's a figure skater, but an injury forces her to turn to pairs. In the meantime, her parents encourage her to take a vacation. While in California, she meets talented surfer/in-line skater Alex (Ross Thomas), who takes a more "extreme sports" approach to life. The uptight Jackie and laid-back Alex hit it off at first, but their romance quickly fizzles (Doug was a hockey player in the original Cutting Edge). Jackie returns home to start looking for a pairs partner. When Alex hears the news, just as a lucrative endorsement deal has fallen through, he travels to Connecticut to audition. Turns out, he's just as good on the ice as on the asphalt (and in the ocean). A partnership is born. Of course, the two bicker at first--plus Alex has a girlfriend--but as they learn to skate together, true love inevitably blooms. Figure skating and adolescence. Less than "Magnifico"........2007-05-17

Skating movies are favourites of mine, so the treat of a skating film is a real joy. If you compare "The Cutting Edge - Going for the Gold" to its 1992 parent movie, it comes out pretty bad. The actors, the dialogues, the scenography are inferior and the plot is practically just the same.

However, since movies represent our reality, I want to point out how this work sensibly depicts the problems of adolescence our children are going through. This short sociological and psychological analysis represents my personal opinion and far from me the desire to generalize.
Jackie is the daughter of Kate Mosely and Doug Dorsey, ex Olympic-gold pair figure skaters. She is determined, stubborn, focused and not willing to give up an inch in attaining her goal. Alex is an athletic, somewhat displaced, not determined, easy going young man. Modern adolescents are exactly like this. Girls today have a greater drive to success and a steadier determination in attaing results. They are not quitters. Fifteen years before Jackie's mother had been the one that had thought of quitting because of love problems.
Boys on the other hand are more concerned with their well being, physical form and are less focused on short term goals. When they dont succeed in their dreams, they willingly change objective and carry on.
Fortunately, the director or the writer, has shown how family is the only barrier against the loss of projects and motivations, how it counsels, sustains and reinforces outlooks on life or how it simply shows the young guys how to live a successfull and satisfying life.
In the parent movie (1992) both the character's families represented a handicap to their evolution and the expression of their emotions, in 2006 the family plays instead a leading role in their success.

Some skating scenes are unrealistic, as accurately pointed out by others. But it is interesting to see how this sport is seen in a wider athletic approach to life, with intermingling to in-line rollerskating and surfing. This mixture of athletic disciplines is present also in other movies such as the entertaining "Stick It" or "The Lords of Dogtown".

Both the leading actors are talented, modern and effectively interact.
This movie is not a classic like the original, but in the line or remakes it does present some interesting characteristics and it is entertaing to see.

Good Movie if you aren't a skating fanatic.......2007-02-13

I saw a lot of negative feedback when I was looking to buy this movie. I'll be the first to admit, I don't watch figure skating. I rented this because I was in the mood for a "chick flick". To me, the skating was good, and the story off the ice was even better. There is a chemistry between the two main characters. This movie made me happy when things were going well and sad for them when they weren't. Any movie that makes you feel (well anything other than revolusion) is worth seeing atleast once, and despite the reviews, I will be adding this movie to my collection.

good... but not near as good as.......2007-02-05

The first one is a great movie and I must have seen it a dozen times. Saw this version on TV and thought it was made for TV (after school style). However, it did catch me and if you loved the origional you'll like this movie. If you were blah on the first, you'll hate this one. Appreciate it for the theme, not the story line, or even the acting. Everyone is atractive and if nothing else the female lead does work her eyes well.

"To Win You Have To Be Willing To Fail".......2006-11-30

`The Cutting Edge - Going for the Gold' released in '06 is a classic case of going to the well once too often. Actually I find it hard to believe they even bothered to make this film. Whether you consider this as a remake of the '92 film of the same title starring D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly, or a sequel to an ongoing storyline it fails miserably on both counts. In the first case, who does a remake of a film that's only fourteen years old? Even worse, if this is supposed to be a part two than why is the plot almost exactly the same?

To quote from the movie, "To win you have to be willing to fail." That line turns out to be nothing short of prophetic. This one definitely is a flop. Watch the '92 version and just pretend this one doesn't exist.

Why did they make this movie.......2006-09-06

This is a very poor remake of a very good movie. The character changes and the story line changes were very weak. It was just plain bad. Even if it was made to be a sequel instead of a remake, the characters were not strong enough to make it an exciting movie. And the ending - there was no comparison of the "signature moves" on the Olympic performance with the original movie. Don't waste your time and money on this one.
