When it was released in 1968, Lady in Cement was the perfect movie for "The Man Who Reads Playboy." It was tailor-made for middle-aged martini-and-poker men who enjoyed Frank Sinatra in Tony Rome a year earlier, and this slapdash sequel finds Ol' Blue Eyes in sun-soaked Miami, where his treasure-hunting discovery of a naked blonde (the ill-fated lady in cement, found dead underwater) gets him tangled up with a massive thug (Dan Blocker), a retired Mafioso (Martin Gabel) with an over-ambitious son, an ultra-sexy heiress (Raquel Welch, in her sexpot prime at age 27), and a variety of Floridian lowlifes who lent the film its R-rated appeal for the cocktail crowd. With its disposable mystery, rampant homophobia, go-go club lechery, peekaboo nudity, bursts of red-blooded violence, and swinging score by Hugo Montenegro, this not-so-lucky Lady bombed at the box office and tested Sinatra's legendary temper, but it's still raucously entertaining (it partially inspired the Austin Powers comedies), and there are plenty of in-jokes to be seen (and especially heard) for anyone steeped in '60s pop culture. Nestled between The Graduate and Easy Rider, Lady in Cement was a cinematic fossil even before the cameras rolled, but Frank's fans are sure to love it anyway. --Jeff Shannon

Description

In this solid suspense drama, Frank Sinatra stars as detective Tony Rome who, while working on a case, discovers everybody he talks to winds up dead.

4 out of 5 stars Sinatra Does It Again.......2006-11-10

One of the things that I admired about Frank Sinatra was his versatility and professionalism. Whenever he did something, be it a song or a movie, he threw himself into it. Lady in Cement, the second (and unfortunately the last) of his Tony Rome movies, shows that same dedication to his craft. While the movie's plot is sometimes hard to follow, the performances make it worthwhile. Sinatra plays the hardboiled, tough guy detective to perfection, but also has a sly smile on his face letting the audience know he's having a good time. Dan Blocker, who was just reaching beyond his Bonanza role of Hoss, gave us glimpse of the potential that was cut short by his untimely death. This was his last movie. And rounding things out is the beautiful Raquel Welch, whose stunning looks overshadowed the fact that she quite often tried to rise above the eye-candy parts she was given. While Lady in Cement is not quite up to its predecessor, Tony Rome, it's still good fun, and gives us a glimpse back at the end of the sixties. It was an era when, as Frank would've said, men were men and broads were broads.

3 out of 5 stars Lady In Cement (1968).......2005-07-18

Waldo?!?!

Now this is a movie with sharp dialogue, comic facial gestures (not over the top) and funny situations that does not fail to please.

Sinatra proves in this minimalist's guide to script a film that it takes nothing less than a good actor with substance to pull it off and come around as a winner. Sinatra has that magic touch; he can own a scene and make it work. Dan Blocker has that same quality, plus his physique; he creates a persona that is a study case for character actors.

Overall, a very entertaining film with many inside jokes. Notice that Sinatra at one point, when talking to Welch, says that he knew a girl that used to date bullfighters. Now if that was not a hint to Ava Gardner then the film The Barefoot Contessa just did not happen.

Therefore, relax, enjoy the film and remember to....

Stay loose.

Again?!?!

3 out of 5 stars "I Once Knew A Dame Collected Bullfighters!".......2005-04-14

Even considering the amazing aspects of the six decade long Sinatra career, the 60's was easily Sinatra's most interesting and diverse.

He started the decade by being the hero of the cocktail generation and wound up the era marrying and divorcing a flower child, thirty years his junior and appearing on TV wearing love beads and a Nehru suit.

"Lady In Cement", shot in Miami in early 1968, found Sinatra reprising his 1967 Tony Rome character; Sinatra shot the film in 30 days (while simultaneously appearing at the Fountainbleu at night).

"Lady" sunk faster at the box office than the dead blonde and helped put the nails in the coffin of Sinatra's film career--this was the era of "The Graduate" and "Easy Rider" and tough talking on screen private eyes were at best, an anachronism.

That said, "Lady In Cement" is a hoot to watch.

Sinatra, in his usual uncanny fashion, is simply terrific and the film is peppered by a knockout performance by Dan Blocker and the bikini clad apperance of Raquel Welch (she can't act her way out of a paper bag, but once she climbs out of a swimming pool, in her opening scene, one is promopted to ask "who cares?"

What makes "Lady" most appealing is that Sinatra allows his film (and HIS film it is without question) to be sprinkled with all manner of political incorrectness (even by 1968 standards)-- leering glimpses of semi nude ladies, rampant homophobia and a liberal amount of hip in jokes ("I knew a dame collected bullfighters"); not to mention hilarious cameo appearnces by Sinatra intimates Jilly Rizzo, Joe E. Lewis and B.S. Pully.

No review of "Lady In Cement" would be complete without a nod to the performance of the great Dan Blocker as Waldo Gronsky, who, in his 3 major scenes, practically walks off (or in Blocker's case, lumbers off) with the film--"Don't tail me pal...I like guys who don't tail me."

Kitty Kelly, in her infamous 1986 Sinatra bio writes that towards the end of filming Sinatra got so angry at one of the screenwriters, he chopped down the door of the writer's hotel room with an axe.

Considering the uniformly bad reviews that were awarded "Lady In Cement's" incomphrehensible screenplay, Frank's early review was probably the kindest.

5 out of 5 stars "A unique murder mystery"........2003-06-10

I learned about "Lady In Cement" during my childhood. At least the song, for I saw it as one of the tracks on Paul Desmond's "Summertime" record album, which my late father owned. When I listened to it, it had the rhythm of a suspenseful crime drama. As I got older and read the information inside the Paul Desmond album, I discovered "Lady In Cement" was a motion picture crime drama, starring Frank Sinatra.

I liked "Tony Rome" (1967). But I find "Lady In Cement" (1968) a more suspenseful mystery. Rome (Sinatra) makes a shocking discovery while scuba diving in a Florida bay: the nude body of a beautiful blonde is found with her feet encased in a block of cement. Hence, the "Lady In Cement".

Frank Sinatra again comes off well in the role of the tough-talking cool private detective Tony Rome. Dan Blocker, well-known for playing "Hoss" on the "Bonanza" tv series, is quite impressive and believable as the crude, statuesque Gronsky, who takes a liking to Tony Rome, and hires him to investigate the murder of his former girlfriend, Sondra Lomaxx, who is the 'Lady In Cement'. His crude behavior and gruffness, however, does not make him a bad guy. He's actually on Tony Rome's side!

Richard Conte again reprises his role as Lieutenant Santini. There is a humorous part later in the film where Rome gets Santini in a bit of trouble with the law! It is during this 'car chase' sequence the familiar "Lady In Cement" theme is played.

Raquel Welch turns in a good perfomance as the wealthy heiress Kit, who suffers alcoholic blackouts where she (conveniently) is unable, under Rome's interrogation, to recall specific details concerning her dealings with the "Lady In Cement" before she died. Although it seems there isn't much for Welch to do in the film but look voluptuous and pretty, she manages to bring sensitivity to her character.

"Lady In Cement", like "Tony Rome", shows the underground, sleazy side of Miami life, replete with late 1960's strip clubs and 'Go-Go' dancers. There is a lot of mature, smart talk in the dialogue. Particularly between Sinatra, Dan ("Hoss") Blocker, Richard Conte and, of course, the villains. Then, again, isn't smart talk usually a part of a crime drama??

There is the musical score by Hugo Montenegro in the film. When I first watched "Lady In Cement", I enjoyed the music so much that I didn't pay close attention to the movie's plot. I soon ended up ordering the movie soundtrack cd.

Finally, I think credit should be given to the "Lady In Cement", herself: the bit actress playing Sondra Lomaxx, Christine Todd. The film's highlight, where Rome discovers Todd in her cement anchor beneath the sea, is worth repeated viewings. It is surreal and hauntingly beautiful with the background score "The Shark" being played.

First, Rome vaguely makes out in the distance what appears to be a blonde topless 'statue', with arms splayed overhead, gently rocking in place in a patch of seaweed (which strategically covers Todd's nude lower half). Upon closer inspection, Rome discovers that it is not a statue, but an actual woman who is naked before him. And dead. There is a close-up of Rome's shocked expression seen behind his mask and scuba regulator. To make sure his eyes are not deceiving him, Rome next proceeds to swim around the upright corpse, eyeing the nude form up and down. One can imagine what's going through Rome's mind: That he's encountered corpses before. But nothing like this! A shocking, yet hauntingly beautiful scene.

This surreal underwater scene abruptly ends when two sharks turn up unannounced, and go in pursuit of Rome. (Note: If you look at that scene closely, one can see Christine Todd's eyes, which were formerly lowered, are now clearly opened! Worse with the sharks swimming about her and Sinatra/Sinatra's stunt double.)

Christine Todd's brief stint as the "Lady In Cement" is unforgettable and convincing. My only question is how did she manage not to release air bubbles, or choke on water as her mouth was slightly opened underwater as she played dead?? I've viewed the 'Undersea Discovery' sequence many times, trying to ponder how was that effect achieved. It isn't a special effect, for everything was clearly done underwater. And I'm quite sure scuba divers were nearby off-camera supplying air to Todd when she needed it. Despite I can swim, I am unable to hold my mouth open underwater prolonged, without me sputtering!

Anyway, "Lady In Cement" is my favorite film, next to "The Amphibian Man" (1962). It is unique and well-done.

5 out of 5 stars Not SoTough Guy.......2002-05-15

This is the best and most delightful of the Tony Rome films. Frank Sinatra is on top of his game as the not so tough P.I in seedy pre-drug Florida. Raquel Welch is nice to look at and Dan Blocker is marvelous as the unstopable Gronsky. For a thirty year old film this one stays fresh and bright. Crisp dialogue and ham without the rye makes for a fun evening.

4 out of 5 stars "You'll be a pillar of the community.".......2006-10-08

The late, great Chris Penn plays a corrupt, drug-dealing, abusing and abusive cop in this modern film noir minor classic. Penn is hip deep in dirty deals with the local mafia when he discovers that his wife (Sherilyn Fenn) is bumping uglies with the son of the local Don. In retribution, Penn decides to bury the kid alive inside a new highway overpass.

CEMENT relies on a number of time-shifts and flashbacks to tell its tale, and the mood is one of dense darkness from start to finish. It's a grand little chestnut with a truly disturbing undertone.

Chris Penn will never have his Academy Award now, but he definitely had the talent and drive to be among the best.

4 out of 5 stars Good neo-noir.......2002-06-14

Although nowhere near the league of Blood Simple, Hard Eight, or One False Move, this is nevertheless an effective neo-noir thriller given some real clout by Chris Penn and Jeffrey Wright, among others. They play two cops, partners, and both corrupt--involved with the mob. Wright's character has the added perk of being a druggie and Penn's Bob Holt is pure evil sleaze. He's married to Sherilyn Fenn (a bit on the non-credible side) who has a serious thing for the son of the local mob boss (much more believable).

Not only that, but we got graft and murder gumming up the works. Add to that some of the old Tarantino time shifts and you got yourself a minor but nifty little piece of work. Femme fatale and corruption--and Holt's desperation to hold onto his wife (fat chance)--make this an edgy neo-noir that's a good time killer. You can add this to the crop of lean, small neo-noirs that do a great job at what they're supposed to; the list also includes The Killing Time and Genuine Risk.

Cement is more recent than the other two mentioned above, and well done, directed by Adrian Pasdar, former star of one of the great 80s vampire flicks, Near Dark.

Tight, nifty, fun to watch. Go for it.

A bizarre and compelling story of family secrets based on the novel by Ian McEwan (who also wrote the novel upon which The Comfort of Strangers is based), this British film tells the complex tale of four children who conspire to hide their dead mother's body to avoid being split apart and sent to an orphanage. Their deception works for a while, as they become a self-sufficient family unit. Soon, however, mistrust and a deeply antagonistic relationship between the older siblings rife with sexual overtones, as well as a snooping suitor with designs on the older sister, threaten to destroy their well-constructed facade. Adapted and directed by Andrew Birkin, this offbeat film is disturbing but a riveting find for anyone interested in new discoveries from the world of international film. --Robert Lane

            3 out of 5 stars Big Wow.......2006-12-04

Aspiring production designers and location scouts should take note of "The Cement Garden" (1993) as an example of especially good use of an available on-the-cheap location. Like the equally low-budget "Carnival of Souls", the film owes much of its effectiveness to the creative use of an available location. "The Cement Garden's" outdoor shots should look familiar as Stanley Kubrick used the location back in 1987 for the main battle sequence of "Full Metal Jacket". He used the abandoned Beckton Gasworks just across from the Royal Docks area (Beckton-Silverton London). The area has now been transformed into London City Airport.

As a film, "The Cement Garden" could best be described as pretentious (marked by an unwarranted claim to importance or distinction). It is a movie that tries embarrassingly hard to be more than the sum of its parts. The strategy is to introduce shocking and scandalous elements in such a casual way that it will amp up the effect of breaking taboos far beyond what they would otherwise merit. This too owes much to Kubrick (insert "Lolita" here).

"The Cement Garden" is what you would get if Gregg Araki remade "Our Mother's House" on a shoestring budget; although it is safe to say Araki would have done a much better job of acting for the camera direction. It is an adaptation of Ian McEwan's controversial novel, but as the adapting was done by Director Andrew Birkin (later to be blamed for "The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc" script), the result is likely to be disappointing to readers of McEwan's book.

I can't actually recommend the film although some viewers will enjoy and/or be shocked by it. It somehow manages to be both melodramatic and boring; I found viewing possible only in 20 minute segments (not so much because it was painful but because it was not involving enough for me to ignore household interruptions). Since the macabre elements aren't particularly shocking (just a couple of stylish "Blue Velvet" type shots), Birkin must fall back on incest and gender identity. It is one perversion too many and there is no logical connection between the two.

The story is about a family of six (mother, father, two daughters and two sons). The older son is meant to look like a girl, the older daughter is meant to look like a boy, and the younger son wants to be a girl. The mother's death occurs a few weeks after the father, and the children conceal her death in an effort to stay together.

The story is told from the point of view of the oldest boy, who is turned on by his own reflection and by his tease of an older sister. Since he looks so much more feminine than her, his sexual orientation may actually be straight. The younger sister (who is not involved in any of this) looks perfectly normal but spends a lot of time writing letters to her dead mother.

Like "Our Mother's House" (a far better film), an older man is inserted into the story in an effort to make something happen. While a little hard to decipher, the basic themes concern the problems associated with assuming responsibilities before you are emotionally mature enough for them.

In fairness, an attempt is made to insert an allegorical element into the film, as the older boy frequently does a voice-over reading of a science fiction story. This is meant to reflect his internal moral struggles but the connection with the events of the story is rather fuzzy. Not surprising since the weak direction builds neither suspense nor convincing characters. But at least there is that great production design.

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

3 out of 5 stars The book it ain't, but it has some redeeming qualities........2006-06-07

The Cement Garden (Andrew Birkin, 1993)

There's a book, and it seems that where there's a book, there's a movie. It is the case that at least ninety-five, some would say closer to ninety-nine percent of the time, the movie is just not as good as the book. I tend to be a bit more liberal than most in that regard, but in this case, while the movie's decent, it has nothing on McEwan's stunning first novel.

Jack (Gormenghast's Andrew Robertson), Julie (Charlotte Gainsbourg, soon to star in the highly anticipated Have Mercy on Us All, based on Fred Vargas' smash hit novel), Sue (Alice Coulthard, in her only screen appearance), and Tom (Ned Birkin, also in his only screen appearance) are four kids living in England. Their father (Munich's Hanns Zischler) dies of a heart attack, and soon after, their mother (Sinead Cusack, recently of V for Vendetta) becomes mysteriously ill. She knows she's dying, and attempts to do as much as she can to make sure the children can survive on their own after her death. The children attempt to do so, in a sort of Lord of the Flies meets The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane way, until Julie gets herself a beau, Derek (veteran TV actor Jochen Horst), which throws Jack-- whose feelings for Julie have become increasingly complex-- into a crisis.

The main difference between the novel and the film is that the kids' mother dies much earlier on in the novel than she does in the film, and so the whole thematic thrust of the novel is forced into roughly half the movie's hour and forty-five minute running time. There's not much chance to do much development there; Birkin chooses to content himself with abbreviating the development of the themes that are birthed when the children start living on their own, and develop those start while everyone's still living as a family. The result isn't a bad film, by any means, but those who have read the novel are likely to find it lacking. Still, there's something about Birkin stocking a film with incestuous undercurrents with his own nieces and nephews that cannot help but invite all sorts of speculation, and there's certainly something to be said for any film that shows off the gorgeous Charlotte Gainsbourg in all her glory. An interesting artifact, but no matter why you're watching it, you're likely to get more out of the book. ** ½

            4 out of 5 stars As Dark A Movie As You'll See.......2006-03-23

Based on Ian McEwan's fine novel by the same name, CEMENT GARDEN is the tale of four children who are orphaned twice in rapid succession by the deaths of their father and mother. The film catches the sheer horror of children's having to deal with the deaths of parents and of their attempts to somehow carry on with their lives. The photgraphy captures the bleakness of both the home the children inhabit as well as the urban environment around them.

The acting by the youngsters is really quite remarkable. The plot follows very closely McEwan's novel. On the other hand, this great novelist's works seem-- at least to me-- to be almost untranslatable to any other medium, certainly not the fault of the director. What I would never have gleaned from this movie because of the dialogue that is often incomprehensible, had I not previously read the novel, is why these children do what they do with their mother's body. That is totally necessary for understanding the movie and a major flaw.

            5 out of 5 stars Haunting adaptation.......2006-02-04

From the opening shots I was mesmerised by this superb adaptation of Ian Mcewans first novel. Dreamy visuals, a haunting soundtrack and near perfect perfomances from the entire cast succeed in bringing to life Mcewan's story as the eerie fable he surely intended it to be but which even his prose could not quite fully capture on the printed page. The recurrent theme in his fiction of the tragic gap between idealism and reality has never been told with more elegance and beauty than here, a perfect little gem of british cinema.

5 out of 5 stars A Dark Story of Human Warmth.......2005-10-18

The Cement Garden is the story of a family transformed by tragedy. When the single mother of four children dies, her death is kept secret by the children. The children fear the prospect of being divided and forced into the homes of strangers. The children begin enjoying new freedoms and some of the quieter aspects of each sibling begin to surface and change their small world. The story is haunting and beautiful and takes us into a realm beyond taboos and social norms. The characters in this story have to survive poverty and loss. They manage to remain gentle with one another in the midst of hardship. The movie climaxes in a dark and erotic bliss that expresses a vision of man against the world. This is a great film that blurs the line between innocence and vice. The performances are top notch and the story is engaging. I highly recommend it for anyone willing to stray a bit off the beaten path.
