Clive Barker's Gothic ghoul Pinhead is pitted against online gamers out for kicks in Hellraiser: Hellworld, the eighth entry in the popular horror franchise. A group of young computer-game enthusiasts crack the secret of Hellworld, a virtual-reality game based on the Hellraiser mythos, and earn themselves an invite to an exclusive party at a secluded and spooky mansion. There, the host (Lance Henriksen, always a welcome sight) reveals his elaborate collection of Hellraiser-related artifacts, as well as a hidden agenda regarding one of the gamers' friends, who died under sinister circumstances. Naturally, this fresh assortment of attractive young souls with an insatiable curiosity for the forbidden summons up Pinhead (Doug Bradley, natch) and his Cenobite friends to unleash their own brand of hell on Earth. Hellraiser devotees won't find any fresh ideas in the script, but veteran cinematographer Rick Bota (who helmed the two previous films in the franchise) provides attractive visuals, and the gore is plentiful and unpleasant. --Paul Gaita

BOUGHT THIS FOR A FAN, I THINK IT SUCKS AND HAS NO REDEEMING QUALITIES. GET A DISNEY FLICK INSTEAD.

1 out of 5 stars This one doesn't belong in the franchise.......2007-04-09

For whatever it's worth, I am a big fan of the series. And if this film wasn't associated with the franchise, then the review would be gauged differently. Unfortunately, this film simply does not belong under the same title. It is simply a low-budget generic horror flick which borrows the name HELLRAISER, but does not merit further comparison. This film is a big disappointment on several levels. Most notably, it has very little to do with the Hellraiser story, and even Pinhead has a small role, his limited presence relegated to an explanation too stupid and lame to indulge, though I won't spoil the plot for those still curious. Secondly, the draw of the storyline was a website/web-based VR game called Hellworld, which draws in the players to their own doom. I like the premise of a website or video game with supernatural overtones, and even will get a look at movies which turn out not to be so good. Again, the premise of Hellworld will prove to be a considerable disappointment.

Like I said, this would have been a middling, unimpressive though tolerable film if it had just been of a nondescript generic origin. Since it tries to milk the HELLRAISER franchise for audience, then it also has a standard it should and will be held to, and should be judged accordingly (2 stars instead of 3). So instead of spoiling the movie, I will give my opinion in hopes of preventing your waste of time & money.

You know what? Forget that. You seem like nice people so I will do you a favor (if you are interested) WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD...

... Hellworld is fake (just a rumor started), and Pinhead is a hallucination triggered by a drug. Also, the main male lead is a incessantly whiny, mopey, and irritating douche who we were hoping would get offed, but instead he survives and ends up with the hot female lead. 1 star instead of 2.

It is a shame that Lance Heinrickson is becoming the icon for movies that made one too many sequels (HELLRAISER, PUMPKINHEAD, PREDATOR, ALIEN). It does not bode well that Kari Wuhrer, lovely though she is, is now the icon for movies whose sequels come to an inglorious end (PROPHECY), and who is starring in the latest/last HELLRAISER installment (HELLRASIER: DEADER). Though good judgment tells me to avoid that one also, like the puzzle box it allows our intrigue and curiosity to draws us into an unpleasant situation.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat scary.......2007-01-11

3.5 stars. This movie is put together extremely well cinematically. (It should be. After all the Hellraiser films are all being made in Romania now so the payroll is cheap.) The story's pretty decent and takes place in this real cool, large scary house. The owner of the house is holding a "Hellworld" party. There are really some scary moments which surprised me (because the series has been going downhill for a few years now). Pinhead shows up more than he has in the last few films but he quite doesn't make any type of point when he confronts anyone. He needs to be more complex with his words and needs to scare the crap out of the people he's about to seize. He needs to give the others something to really wrap their heads around. He really doesn't tell these people why he's killing them. And there's only a few bizarre torture devices. There needs to be more. The ending is the most disappointing. Pinhead should appear at the ending which he does for a minute or two and he should really be agitated and sum everything up with riddles and metaphors and really put people through hell but the end just kind of fizzles and you're left with really no overtones from Pinhead. Overall, a good movie to watch. Plus there's a lot of nudity and sex.

1 out of 5 stars What The Hell?.......2006-08-26

This movie is an utted disgrace to all horror movies and especially Hellraiser, the plot sucked, the actors and the acting sucked and worst of all Pinhead was only in the movie for a whole 5 minutes. They should this crappy movie in the garbage, get rid of all the a**holes who were in this movie and start over with Clive Barker making the movies. As soon as Clive left the movies really started to suck. Please next Hellraiser movie make sure Clive Barker is directing it and Peter atkins is writing the script cuz these people just plain out suck!

1 out of 5 stars Pinhead should consider retirement.......2006-07-07

The Pinhead we all love is back in the 8th installment of the Hellraiser movies called Hellraiser: Hellworld. This time a group of kids are invited to a Hellworld party full of partying, drinking, dancing and all out fun but their fun soon turns out for the worst as one by one they start to die. Lance Henriksen (Hard Target, Near Dark) plays The Host of the party. Doug Bradley (Hellraiser 1 & 2) is still going strong as Pinhead but he's the only thing good in this movie. Henriksen should stop doing this kind of stuff. Katheryn Winnick (Failure To Launch, 50 First Dates) plays the screaming girl this time but she's laughably bad here and her screaming is annoying. She either needs lessons or it was the script. Also starring Henry Cavilll (Tristan & Isolde, Laguna), Christopher Jacot (Degrassi, Get Over It) and Khary Payton. Another forgettable horror sequel

      1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2005-10-24

If I could give this movie negative 5 stars then I would. I had more fun getting my wisdom teeth pulled out than watching this movie.

2 out of 5 stars missed an oportunity.......2005-09-15

I had anticipated the arrival of this movie, even recognizing a much over done plot senario. While there were a couple of new wrinkles in this movie, they of themselves could not save the day. If there was ever a movie that cried out for an unrated version, this would be it. That would have at least classified it as a soft-core release, and perhaps satisfied some in that respect. After all there are some degenerate souls out there that enjoy lesbian vampire movies. We know who we are, don't we? Hee! Hee! However, you have to get beyond bra, and panties to be soft-core. Further, to be a vampire flick there has to be some neck munching, which in this case was only implied, except one instance occuring very late in the movie, and didn't really seem to have much to do with the main plot. As with the ending, I can't ruin the suspense for anyone, because I'm not even sure whether good, or evil prevaled. Better rent it, if you can find it.

      1 out of 5 stars Rubbish.......2005-08-18

I had already purchased a double DVD of David DeCoteau's; the Brotherhood, and the Brotherhood II.

Sisterhood shares similar features. Young nice looking cast, set in a university campus. Young naieve person the target of 'seduction' by evil. That's the good points.

The bad points are the 'seductions' are so lame - no one gets down to more than underwear. This happens a lot, but no scene ever really goes anywhere. Such a great chance to be a little bit sexy, but David DeCoteau reals back prudishly... making for very lame sequences.

In this, the vampirism is really only evident right at the very end, when the head of the 'sisterhood' bears her fangs just once before dying. Thus it fails on several levels; it's not scary, it's not sexy, it's not really much about vampires.

Had I known this film was also by him (my own fault), I'd not have bought it - based on the 'formula' of the other two films mentioned above.

      1 out of 5 stars A big disappointment.......2005-08-09

When I saw the DVD box cover and read that this film was about hot & seductive sorority girl witches, I knew this one had to be good. I WAS SO WRONG!!! Director David Decoteau would have us believe this video centers around hot girls doing things with other hot girls, but in reality Decoteau appears to be more interested in HOT GUYS?!! Seriously, this film was NOT EROTIC for those of us hoping to see girls with other girls. Perhaps Mr. Decoteau should make a DVD called "Brotherhood" about a gay fraternity. I think that's where his heart is.

      1 out of 5 stars Couldn't Even Watch..........2005-07-31

I like cheesey horror. But this film was nothing more than soft-core porn. If you want to watch porno, why not watch the real thing? Disappointing on all levels. 1 Star.

5 out of 5 stars A compelling, surprisingly impressive drama.......2006-01-11

1938's The Devil's Party is really one heck of a good movie packing a solid story and quite an emotional punch. I've never been all that wild about Hell's Kitchen movies, but this one is different. We start out in that infamous section of old New York, but the real story involves an unfortunate series of events that tests the bonds of friendship and accentuates the fuzzy line that sometimes exists between the good and bad in men.

The Death Avenue Cowboys, four boys and a girl (accepted quite reluctantly, of course), grew up during some hard times in Hell's Kitchen and remained friends even as they grew up and went their separate ways. That special bond of friendship was really cemented by the gang's leader, Marty Malone, when he refused to squeal on his friends and took the rap for a warehouse fire he accidentally started (it was supposed to be nothing more than a smoky diversion). Marty did his time in the reformatory, and he's now a successful night club owner - although the gambling part of his establishment casts something of a shadow over his life. The little girl who pestered her way into the club is now a singer, the O'Mara brothers are policemen, and the other Death Avenue Cowboy is now a priest. The gang gets together every year to reminisce, and this year it's Marty's turn to host. The party's a success, but misfortune strikes soon thereafter.

A couple of Marty's boys came down a little hard on a fellow who refused to pay his gambling debt. Joe O'Hara thinks the "accident" was actually a murder, and he's determined to snoop around - which, naturally, is the last thing Marty (Victor McLaglen) wants. You can imagine how things snowball from here. (You don't really want one of your best friends linking you to a murder, even when you're only indirectly responsible for it.) Eventually, all five former friends are sucked deeply into an increasingly dangerous situation, their loyal bonds of friendship more than strained in the process. The whole series of unfortunate events that takes place puts Marty in a particularly impossible situation, as he is both innocent and guilty at the same time. Still, he remains the most sympathetic character throughout the film; his hands are a little dirty, but he's basically a good and charitable man who just can't seem to avoid trouble.

The Devil's Party tells a most compelling, thought-provoking story. It's presented in a rather straightforward matter, and in some ways it is predictable, yet the moral issues that form the heart of the drama really carry this film to great heights. Some of the movie summaries I've read make it sound as if somebody starts killing off these old friends one at a time in grisly fashion, but that is not the case at all. This isn't horror or a hard-boiled crime thriller; it's barely even a mystery. It is instead a poignant emotional drama with far more depth than you might expect. I was really impressed with The Devil's Party, despite its far too sensational title.

4 out of 5 stars Death to squealers!.......2004-09-26

For some reason that tough corner of New York City, Hell's Kitchen, had a good run in the 1930s. THE DEVIL'S PARTY is one of many slum kids movies of that decade, one of the better ones of a genre that would camp out into Dead End Kids silliness within a decade.
The story comes from Borden Chase's novel "Hell's Kitchen Has a Pantry." The movie opens with a gang of five slum kids, four boys and a girl, casing and preparing to steal from a fruit company. They throw a diversionary smudge pot into the warehouse and accidentally start a fire. The leader, Marty Malone, is caught and, following the rules of the street, takes the rap and refuses to squeal on his cohorts. Malone is sent to reform school while the other kids apparently take the scare to heart and reform themselves.
Flash forward to adulthood and the kids have grown up into a nightclub singer, a priest, a nightclub owner who has a couple of toes in the "racket," and a brace of cops.
Not surprisingly Malone is the one who grew up a touch shady, although the group remain great good friends and reune annually. Things turn sour and into a movie when Malone has a couple of goons put the squeeze on a gambling playboy who's bouncing big checks on him and laughing about it. Squeeze turns into murder (against Malone's orders, I hasten to add) and a few too many clues are left to make it seem an accident. Two emergency squad policemen called to the scene just happen to be the O'Mara brothers, two-fifths of the old fruit nabbing slum kids' gang.
Gentle brute Victor McLaglen, who had two years earlier won a leading actor Academy Award in John Ford's 1936 THE ENFORCER, stars as the grown up Marty Malone. The rest of the cast is made up of talented and vaguely familiar bit actors. For instance, singer Beatrice Roberts is probably best known for her role as Azura, Queen of Mars, in the Flash Gordon serials. William Gargan, one of the two O'Mara brothers, was nominated for an Oscar in 1941 for his supporting role in THEY KNEW WHAT THEY WANTED. McLaglen had enough range to carry any b-movie they cared to throw at him, but the other actors in this are top of the line b-stars who didn't embarrass themselves when they appeared in more prestigious films.
After the delinquent gambler's murder things heat up considerably, old ties of friendship are frayed and stressed, and Malone eventually finds himself in the position of having to take another one to protect the gang. What happens is fairly predictable, but this film is fast paced and avoids so many cliches it's hard not to like it.
The print transfer on this discount dvd is fairly good, all things considered. The image is usually clear and sharp and the sound is acceptable. There are a few stretches where the film is badly scratched and stained, but fewer than some from this distributor.
A bit of trivia. Victor McLaglen didn't come into his own as an actor until he was over fifty. Prior to his acting career he was a boxer (check his more-than-once broken nose for verification) and my old copy of The Film Encyclopedia says that he once fought heavyweight champion Jack Johnson, who he lost to in six rounds.
