Sisters is not Brian De Palma's first film, but in many ways it is the first Brian De Palma film, or at least the first to reveal (and revel in) his affinity with Hitchcock. A pre-Superman Margot Kidder struggles with a French-Canadian accent as an aspiring actress whose one-night stand leads to a homicidal morning-after. Jennifer Salt is a reporter with more moxie than tact or skill who sees the killing from her apartment window across the way. When the police fail to turn up any evidence of the crime, Salt investigates with a private eye (the hilariously relentless Charles Durning), uncovering the secret story of a pair of Siamese twins and a weaselly, stalker doctor. It's a mystery simmering in a stew of voyeurism, guilt, sex, and obsession. De Palma borrows from Rear Window, Psycho, and Vertigo (as well as Roman Polanski's Repulsion), and composer Bernard Herrmann quotes from his own Hitchcock scores (notably Psycho) for the unsettling music, but the result is more original than you might imagine. Laced with dark humor, inventive technique, and impressive technical precision (the split-screen sequences are breathtakingly effective), De Palma flexes his cinematic muscles with thrilling results, right down to the mordantly wry conclusion. De Palma graduated to big-budget thrillers, but this modest little production remains one of his sharpest, slyest, most engrossing films. Long available only in pallid video transfers, the Home Vision/Criterion letterboxed restoration is bright, clear, and beautiful. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Margot Kidder is Danielle, a beautiful model separated from her Siamese twin, Dominique. When a hotshot reporter (Jennifer Salt) suspects Dominique of a brutal murder, she becomes dangerously ensnared in the sisters' insidious sibling bond. A scary and stylish paean to female destructiveness, De Palma's first foray into horror voyeurism is a stunning amalgam of split-screen effects, bloody birthday cakes, and a chilling score by frequent Hitchcock collaborator Bernard Herrmann. Criterion is proud to present Sisters in a new Special Edition.

Cancel the Birthday Party.......2007-04-19
She's so darn seductive, what guy could resist her. But resist Margot Kidder they better, because she's got an evil twin that reacts very badly toward sex. If you can get past all the gore and the unmistakable shadow of Hitchcock, this is one heck of a fascinating film, with an excellent script, a number of twists, and some well-realized irony. And pity poor reporter Jennifer Salt. She wants so badly to do the right thing, but she's got a nagging mother, a detective school helper, and a tactless attitude. Now she's on the trail of a hot story, one that might land her a big-time job, but she really doesn't know what she's dealing with. There are several memorable scenes-- the "surprise" birthday party, Salt's wacky nightmare (very Fellini-esque), and the final bedside irony, along with a nicely deceptive opening that sets the stage for what follows.
De Palma has had a maddening career as a movie-maker. All in all, Sisters is probably the best and worst thing to happen to him. It's his best movie, done with flash and assurance, but it also propels him down the wrong-way track of re-doing Hitchcock without the master's knowing restraint. The result is an erratic career and a general squandering of real talent. Too bad, because the very last scene suggests a delicious irony worthy of the master himself. And that, of course, is the problem. But it's no problem for this film, which stands as a minor gem in the horror-suspense category.
A must see movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-11-07
I've seen this movie years ago, and just had to order the movie again.
I ordered the dvd on tuesday 11/2/06 and recieved it today>Monday 11/6/06 this afternoon. Some viewer's tend to spoil the movie!!! give other's little info on the movie. But let them buy the movie for self.
Again, I give this movie 5 stars for everything!!
It gets 4 stars just because it's De Palma..........2006-08-27
Some would say that Sisters is De Palma's first real homage to Hitchcock with a feature film. It's got all the ingredients. Evil twins. Split personalities. A Rear Window shoutout. Femme fatales. Everything you could possibly want in a De Palma homage to Hitchcock. His homages would only get better, but Sisters is definitely a fair starting point for what would become one of the greatest thriller directors of all-time.
Sisters begins in a totally Hitchock way. A normal event, in this case a game show called Peeping Toms after which the two contestants decide to have dinner. What seems like a simple one-night stand gradually turns into something else, until violence interjects in a bloody, gratuitous fashion. The murder that takes place in the apartment sets the course for the rest of the film, as the backstory behind everything is revealed. As with most De Palma films, Sisters is best left almost totally unrevealed as there are some pretty good twists at the end. Is it cheesy at parts? Sure. Is the acting iffy? Absolutely. But it's all in good fun, and De Palma takes everything to the max to make sure that the viewer is in for quite a ride.
Originality and that fine line.......2006-04-09
Everyone seems to want to talk about the Directors feel in the film close to Hitchcock. The films made and frankly no one here has room to be so crictical. Frankly, the film stands very well on it's own and in this review, we'll focus on that. However, as a guideline if you like Hitchcock and are not so caty as other Hitchcock fans, you'll love this picture.
My obsession with siamese twins began shortly after seeing the film. Although the extras are not over bundant as other Crit col. films, the restoration is an art to it's own. Sisters, cuts through the red tape or should I say the flesh. Was there a murder? What happened through that window? You'll have to see this to find out. Although not my favorite type of Horror/suspence.... it was a terrific watch and a definate change from the hollywood garbage that has been made the past years for horror. A+ A must see. I will not give away this films high points you have to see it.
There was no body because there was no murder.......2006-03-28
'Sisters' is a haunting and suspenseful early DePalma film. It is clearly an homage to Alfred Hitchcock, as others have stated, but there is also the unique stamp of a new and talented director on the scene. The dream/hypnosis scene is startling (Depalma has said that he was influenced by the dream scene in 'Rosemary's Baby). DePalma also seems to be interested in Freudian psychology (one of Hitchcock's preocupations) - there are a couple shots, in particular, that are clearly references to Freud.. This movie lingers in the mind long after it is over - very nice criterion edition too..

Description
Long, long ago, the North Pole was ruled by the good fairy Lady Boreal and her enemy was the wicked wizard Winterbolt. To protect Santa Claus from Winterbolt's foggy fury, Lady Boreal grants Rudolph the Reindeer a magical, glowing nose. Years later, Rudolph and his friend Frosty the Snowman are called on to save a needy circus at a special 4th of July benefit. But their big-top act turns to big-time trouble when Winterbolt appears -- with a plan to steal Frosty's magic hat and extinguish Rudolph's legendary nose! Brought to shing Animagic life with the voices of Mickey Rooney, Ethel Merman, Red Buttons and Shelley Winters, this feature-length fable is a must-see for all seasons.

Another Rankin/Bass Christmas Classic.......2007-07-02
Many used to recall ABC originally aired most of the Rankin/Bass Ani-Magic stop-motion specials while CBS aired Rudolph and the animated Frosty (of course, the Frosty spin-off, Frosty's Winter Wonderland was aired on ABC).
So witnessing the original special on ABC was definitely a treat and the fact both were actually put into Ani-Magic rather than just animation. The clever thing I loved about Rankin/Bass was how they could take something and give it a unique spin.
'Christmas in July,' was originally a name of a film, and later used by retailers as sort of a connotation of Summer Sales. But here, Rankin/Bass put a whole new unique origin behind Rudolph's red nose. Apparently before St. Nick wound up at the North Pole (with great allusions to the other Rankin/Bass specials, by the way), there was a wicked wizard known as Winterbolt.
After centuries of observing his ruthless, and apathetic ways, the Lady Borealis decided on taking action and sealing the wizard into a deep sleep with her magic. Regrettably, as Time marched on, Lady Borealis realized she could no longer contain the vile wizard. So with the remaining bit of her magic, she placed a spell upon a young reindeer, and as a result, he inherited a glowing red nose.
Ironically, Winterbolt discovers things have changed at the North Pole, and decides to spoil Santa's reputation with the children of the world. Inspired by his infamous genie of the staff (which obviously the Genie was getting his schemes from the Brain), Winterbolt uses his Ice Dragons to whip up a horrible winter storm on Christmas Eve. But as the story goes, Rudolph saved the day (note, no mention of Yukon, Hermie or the Snow Beast is mentioned here, which makes one wonder if the Snow Beast was once in the employ of Winterbolt, but let's not start analyzing here).
Naturally, Winterbolt isn't thrilled with this outcome, until he discovers if Rudolph dares use his nose for a selfish and wicked purpose, the reindeer's nose will be extinguished. After a brief futile attempt in doing so with the direct approach, Winterbolt retreats to his castle and learns about Milton, the Ice Cream man.
Every July, Milton comes and picks up a batch of ice cream for the Sea Side Circus at the Beach from the storehouse Santa lets him use. Except this time, Milton has his own problems. Milton's in love with the circus' tightrope walker, and naturally proposed to her. But on the day of their wedding, an evil carney has come to foreclose on the circus. (Here Ethyl Merman plays not only as the tightrope walker's mother, but owner and ringmaster of the circus.) And unless the circus can raise the money in time, there will be no more circus.
Mind you, this show was done in the Eighties, so you have to suspend some disbelief, since Winterbolt jumps at the chance for a scheme. Here, Milton suggests if Rudolph and Frosty come back with him, people from miles around would pay to see them. Though Frosty's kids and Crystal would love to go to the circus, Frosty reminds them if they went to the beach in July, they'd instantly melt.
Enter Winterbolt, who kindly pretends to help the Snow Family with special amulets to protect them from the heat. The catch, the amulets' powers cease when the final firework on the Fourth fades away. Naturally, it doesn't take Columbo to see what ol' Winterbolt has in store.
Anyway, rather than spoil the rest of the plot for you. This was one of Rankin/Bass' better holiday excursions because it was the first one to use several past Rudolph and Santa Claus specials to tie-in some of the backstories as well as provide a means for moving the plot along.
Now the interesting thing I note about 'Christmas In July,' was the writers currently were using specials which were aired more frequently on the networks. Because you'll notice a lot of cameos from characters from the current past specials, but at the same time, you wonder what happened to certain characters from the original specials of both Rudolph and Frosty. But the good thing here is, the story is rather well-conceived, you don't really care too much about continuity here.
And the real funny thing most people don't remember, before ABC Family started airing this special in July. I can recall when local cable channels started doing 'Christmas in July,' gimmicks for Summers sweeps, and the first thing they'd air was this special. However unlike this DVD version, the syndicated version had been edited for time constraints, so sometimes the altered one made no sense in several spots.
Overall, 'Christmas in July,' was one of those great specials you'd see in a blue moon, and was one of the rare ones which wasn't marred by commericalism you now see in most Holiday specials, or contain preachy morals as well. It was just fun to watch. Whether you're watching this during the Holidays, or on the Fourth, 'Christmas in July,' is definitely a purchase worth getting.

Frosty gets puppet-animated. Rudolph gets tricked. Children get confused........2005-12-30
I guess the highlight of this feature film is that we finally get to see Frosty the Snowman in Rankin/Bass's trademark stop-motion puppet-animation process, Animagic! Now, don't get me wrong, the original TV specials "Frosty the Snowman" and the sequel "Frosty's Winter Wonderland" were great but I think we all wish that they were done in puppet-animation like Rudolph, Jack Frost and Santa Claus. Unfortunately, that may be one of the only highlights of this film.
At a running time of over 95 minutes, there is very little to keep the story rolling. There is also an over abundance of non-sensical plot twists and flashbacks that even I found confusing, let alone the children this movie was targeted for. And unless your child is a fan of showtunes (and c'mon what child isn't?), then the songs which appear every few minutes will most likely bore them.
The plot concerns the evil King Winterbolt who was put into a long deep sleep by the magical Lady Boreal. Upon awakening, he finds there is a new king of the North Pole named Santa Claus, and decides to make him get lost in a blizzard courtesy of his snow-breathing dragons so that he may once again rule the North Pole with his evil ways. The only problem is Rudolph's nose, which he decides must be extinguished for his plans to be carried out. In one of the many flashback sequences we learn that Rudolph's shiny red nose which came from the magic of Lady Boreal, will go out if it is ever used for bad purposes, even once.
King Winterbolt decides to offer Frosty and his family magic emulets that will allow them to visit the great 4th of July Circus by the Sea without melting, but only until the "Final Fireworks Fade on the Fourth". Santa Claus agrees to pick them all up when the fireworks end and whisk them back to the North Pole before the Frosty and his wife and two children are turned into puddles of water.
But, Winterbolt's snow breathing dragons whisk up a storm to keep Santa and Mrs. Claus from reaching the circus in time. Meanwhile, Winterbolt gets some help from a mean-spirited reindeer named Scratcher, and the two decide to use their sneaky ways to blackmail Rudolph into using his nose for bad.
If this seems confusing, imagine actually watching this film or better yet, imagine a child watching this film! Like many of R/B's later efforts, this one is rooted more in the magic and mystical style of "Life and Adventures of Santa Claus" than the fairytale-ish style of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer".
There are some crazy songs which I found very amusing, like "Don't Let The Parade Pass You By" which is sung by Ethel Merman in her crazy style. There are also some special guest stars including Jack Frost from "Jack Frost" and Big Ben the whale from "Rudolph's Shiny New Year". In fact, there are a lot of nice touches and this film with the three biggest stars of Christmas could have been really good, if only the writing were better, some of the songs were scrapped and the running time was shortened.
If you are a fan of Rankin/Bass's work, you will not want to miss this one although you most likely will have trouble getting your kids to sit through the whole thing with you.
**Warning!!** The DVD release of this film has the sound very badly out-of-sync which annoys one throughout the movie! Because of this I lowered my rating for this film from 3 to 2 stars. I'm surprised that Warner Bros would allow a DVD to be released like this, and what's worse is that the former VHS release did not have this problem!! Shame on you, Warner Brothers!
A lovely film indeed!.......2005-12-05
A fan of the Christmas classics as well, I feel that this sequel works quite well with the other films. Is it long? Perhaps. Is it scary? Not really. It does get dramatic just as much as it is cheerful. We get to see the Origin of Rudolph's Nose as well as Frosty's Hat.
In the spirit of Christmas, this film is well worth it. In July? Absolutely, especially when the winter temperatures seem to be gone forever and you begin to reminisce about winter and such.
Overall, this film grows on you, just because if you saw it as a child, you have a personal bond with it.

Customer Reviews:
These reviews are just not true........2006-10-28
I've viewed this film a number of times and completely disagree with many of the comments by other reviewers. First of all, the cinematography is first rate, obviously shot by a pro not "someone with a home video camera." That comment is totally bogus. The plot was very interesting and the ending is not "predictable." I liked the creative use of power tools in the kill scenes. The acting is pretty good too, much better than I've seen in many other genre films - the characters were believable and not just "acting." The editing was better than most low budget horror films and I liked the music alot - especially the ending song. This film is definately worth watching - go rent it and see for yourself - don't believe some pimple-faced 14 year old reviewer who only likes films that are 98% special effects.
Awful.......2006-10-20
I was very disappointed in this movie. It had such cool cover art on the DVD that I took a chance and rented it - foolish move. It just isn't scary. It is a typical slasher type film, but with no scares, storyline, etc.. I watch many, many movies and can honestly say that this is perhaps one of the top 5 worst movies I've seen. I highly recommend staying clear of this movie.
The ending saves it from only getting one star........2006-09-20
Ambitious describes this movie well. Someone with ambition, a camcorder and some cash made this movie and somehow got it distributed. Someone below said it reminded them of Identity. Okaaaaay. If Identity had a poor cast, poor lighting, poor film quality, poor sound effects, maybe. This really wasn't scary and I can't imagine how they managed to get such a cool cover or two copies placed at the Hollywood video in my neighborhood. The fight scene is so laughable. The kill scenes are laughable. I didn't cringe or get scared once during this movie. The premise could have been interesting with better writing, acting, sound, film...well you get the idea. Hess leaves clues that are about as subtle as car bombs throughout the move that point to the surprise! ending. The ending was kind of a surprise but it got there too quickly after a lot of drawn out nonsense. Eh, maybe 1.5 stars might have been more appropriate. The girls who played Stacey and Christina weren't too bad, the rest of the cast should be put out of their misery promptly. For the love of God, don't waste $22.00 bucks on this. Heck, I kind of want my $3.99 back...
totally sucked........2006-08-07
The quality of the filming was horrible, it looked as though it might have been recorded with a home video camera. The acting was bad, and the plot didn't clearly present itself or end itself at all. I was very unimpressed, even for a "B movie."
Very SWEET Indeed! .......2006-06-29
Whoever wrote the previous review MUST be on drugs. SWEET INSANITY is a very capable horror pic that holds some genuinely disturbing ideas presented to us by a very confident attitude to narrative pacing and strong approach to imagery. It sets itself apart from other pics in that instead of beginning `cold', like too many low budget horrors these days, it eases us into the story and eventually taking us on a frightening ride. The film is a solid visual experience and occasionally startles us with well-placed images such as the numerous `out of the box' killings. You won't be disappointed by this chiller. SWEET is sweet indeed!

In this animated reworking of the 1961 movie, Mother Goose characters are pitted against the evil Barnaby, intent on preventing Toyland's factory from fulfilling Santa's order. This time it's the lamb-owning Mary, not the contrary Mary, who's intrigued with Tom, the Piper's son. The pair wants to save Mary's inherited factory, while the orphaned Jack and Jill seek to escape their uncle/jailer Barnaby. In a pop psychology twist, Barnaby wants Mary's factory, not Mary herself. His main beef is with the toys, because--it turns out--he never had any as a child. Pirate goons, an actual monkey wrench, and a forestful of goblins do their worst, but all ends well when Tom sics his newly invented larger-than-life toy soldiers with Inspector Gadget-like gizmos upon the villains. Christmas is saved, Mary and Tom envision their future, and many songs are sung by voice talents including the late Charles Nelson Reilly, as Humpty Dumpty. (Ages 3 and older)--Kimberly Heinrichs

My Boys Love this movie!! Buy it , so will you...........2006-01-22
I have 3 boys 8,5, and 3 and this is a favorite with each of them as they grew up!! My little one is really nuts about this movie. I love the music and the catchy tunes. I am continually amazed by Christopher Plummer who is the voice of Barnaby... he is just one of the best. I grew up loving him in the Sound of Music and now his talent is being enjoyed by my boys. It takes a real talent to pull off the Barnaby character. Don't pass this up!!!!
Babes in Toyland.......2004-10-29
Some of the music written for the operetta by Victor Herbert
did not appear in this video, but I still liked it very much.
At least the stirring "March of the Toys" was included. Barnaby
was shown as he was-- a real meanie. It is odd that he forbade not only TOYS for Jack and Jill but locked them in the attic and would not let them eat! Was he THAT bad in the original oper-
etta?
My daughters favorite.......2002-02-24
My 2 1/2 yr old daughter LOVES this movie. She watched it so often at grandmas it broke. I found another copy and shes happy again. She likes Humpty Dumpty the best and the goblins also.... Thanks!!
Great for a 3 year old!.......1999-12-12
My 3 1/2 yr old has watched this over and over. She loves Tom the Piper's son, and Mary (of little lamb fame). She also loves the music. The bad guys are not too scary for a three year old (at least not mine).

Sweet Evil.......2001-07-01
I thought that the movie was really neat and the acting was excellent.I also think that Scott Cohen is really hot.
Nothing new but still worth viewing.......2000-12-19
Bridgette Wilson (AKA Mrs. Pete Sampras) stars as Jenny Clark, a woman with many problems. At a young age her parents died and we also learn she was abused by her foster parents. She becomes the Surrogate Mother to Mike and Naomi. My inital feeling was she just wanted the baby but it turns out something else is driving her to be Evil, perhaps it was a past dealing with Mike or Naomi?

Bitter taste.......2006-01-27
How can two reviewers give this film four stars? It's such a mess even amazon list the same film twice
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/ref=br_ss_hs/103-2654865-7610259?platform=gurupa&url=index%3Ddvd%26dispatch%3Dsearch%26results-process%3Dbin&field-keywords=sweet+evil&Go.x=0&Go.y=0
under two different release dates, and http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0314748/fullcredits leaves out the second leading lady Seiko Matsuda
The reason; they re-released it under another name "Final Vendetta" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116306/
The lengths they went to, to confuse people caught me out too, as I'd already seen this film and purchased it again under the different title.
Anyway, the plot: A woman seduces her way into a childless house in order to act as their surrogate. She becomes pregnant, kills a few people suspicious of her and then attempts to kill the husband and wife (played by Matsuda).
That's it. The 'sex' scenes are done with them all fully-clothed. SO it can't even be claseed as an 'erotic' thriller.
very good movie.......2000-06-11
this movie is a really good thriller, it keeps you on you toes throughout the whole movie. If you like thriller movies then you will love this one.
There is a mystery to be solved........1999-04-29
Bridgette Wilson is beautiful and fascinating as a surrogate mother with a hidden agenda. The mystery is her motive. I thought it was a real challenge to try and keep straight in my mind who was the mother of the baby. Beware of being mislead by the last line in the movie. Adoption is NOT less complicated than surrogacy.
