Silva Screen Records presents "Mariza: Concerto Em Lisboa" --- featuring Mariza Reis Nuneswas the artist who performed at Live 8; she sang at the Eden Project in Cornwall. Since that time, Mariza has been invited to a large number of concerts and events to promote Portuguese culture around the whole world, from Australia to Finland, the United States and Argentina ... Mariza is considered as a more contemporary follower of Amália Rodrigues ... growing up, and until she became a fado singer, Mariza sang in a wide variety of styles, including gospel, soul and jazz ... released in 2001, Mariza's first album, "Fado em Mim", was an instant success in Portugal, selling more than 30,000 copies. This led to her recording company launching the disc internationally and taking advantage of the good reception that Portuguese music was enjoying at the time in Europe and in other countries, such as Mexico and Japan ... at the 2002 FIFA World Cup she performed the Portuguese national anthem at the game which pitted the home team (South Korea) against Portugal ... then came Mariza's second album, "Fado Curvo", was released in 2003, she was already considered as one of the best singers of what some call the new Fado movement. Mariza's voice, which harks back to the grand divas of the musical form, like the eternal Amalia Rodrigues, and her impassioned interpretations of Fado standards brought her great international recognition in a short amount of time, leading to her being the recipient, in March 2003, of BBC Radio 3's award for Best European Artist in World Music ... with her third album, "Transparente", was recorded in Brazil and released in 2005.

Mariza Reis Nunes (pron. IPA: [mP.'~i.zP]/) (born December 16, 1973 in Mozambique) is a fado singer, moved to Portugal when she was three, and was raised in one of the most traditional quarters of Lisbon, Mouraria - Alfama, where she learned how to sing fado ... she has a Portuguese father but her mother hails from Mozambique (the song "Transparente" is a tribute to her African grandmother) ... for the Olympic Games of Athens 2004 she sang a duet with Sting in the song A thousand years, released on the official pop album of the Athens Olympics, Unity, on which fado is sung in English and Portuguese. Well crafted drama-thriller.......2002-07-21

A traveling salesman, whose merchandise is porn videos, meets an older woman who's on the run from her husband. If that's all this film were, it's possible it could have some merit. But it's far more than that.

The woman's daughter is just as emotionally ruthless as her father; we learn that when the daughter, the son, and the woman's father catch up to the salesman and the woman on the road. Add to that a previous affair the woman was having with her husband's business partner and, more than anything else, the woman's own very peculiar emotional state, and what's on display are some very well thought out psychological twists and turns.

These machinations are complicated further when the husband, played by the great Spanish actor Federico Luppi, shows up to harass his wife. The business partner has died in a horrific car accident and had left some critical information on a tape in the possession of the woman. Was it really an accident or was it instigated by the husband? Is the husband completely ruthless, strictly focused on business, or is he insanely jealous because of his wife's affair? These unanswered questions, rather than being a source of frustration, are the real meat of the story, and the director, Antonio Hernandez, handles them very well indeed.

The woman, played by Almodovar regular Carmen Maura, is excellent in her very demanding role. Is she crazy? Terrified? Both? Or something else? The ending does much to answer these questions, but it's a shocker and a good one.

Recommended.

When I saw this as part of a Lincoln Center festival of films from Spain, I was convinced I would never see it again and focussed on the acting of the players with whom I was familiar, Carmen Maura and Federico Luppi giving a staggeringly menacing preformance. I also loved the intricate plot and clean, but involving visuals. And, there was Laia Marull. With no other evidence, I cannot make my usual claim that her character, brilliantly played, was a Philip K. Dick Dark Haired Girl (see my other reviews) but nonetheless she displayed the callous lack of human feeling attributed to the archetype.

It was not until it was to my complete and utter joy and surprise that it came out on DVD (in the U.S., of all places) that I was able to focus on the low key, but wonderful performance of Sergi Lopez. No wonder he got the Goya.

Description

In the southwest of Spain near the Portuguese border, a woman named Ana lives a quiet life as a vegetarian. Her daughter and a friend share her daily tasks and routine. She has never talked about her past and her seclusion and silence is food and gossip among her neighbors. There are certain events in Ana's life that have forced her to flee to these desolate parts. One day, her past in the shape of an attractive man, knocks on her door. He has returned to complete some unfinished business in which Ana plays the part of a shadowy figure that could never have been found . . . until now.
