Granada Television followed The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes with The Return of Sherlock Holmes, 11 more episodes of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective played by Jeremy Brett. After his apparent demise at the hands of Professor Moriarty, Holmes is resurrected in "The Empty House." Brett is outstanding as the famed sleuth, whose return from what Sherlockians call the Great Hiatus is challenged by one of Moriarty's most murderous lieutenants (Patrick Allen), already a killer on the run in London. "The Abbey Grange," a bloody mystery with significant moral and ethical implications, was also an early episode in the new onscreen association of Brett and Edward Hardwicke (who ably replaced the departed David Burke as Dr. Watson), and the two actors seem as perfectly meshed as their allied characters. Arguably the most entertaining and satisfying episode from the entire series, "The Second Stain" finds Holmes facing intertwining problems, each with very different consequences. The look of epiphany on Brett's face when the ever-clueless Inspector Lestrade (Colin Jeavons) tells Holmes about an odd detail in the murder victim's home is enormous fun.
Counselor Troi from Star Trek: The Next Generation--or rather actress Marina Sirtis--is part of the cast of "The Six Napoleons," a wild mystery that suggests that a madman with a grudge against Napoleon Bonaparte is smashing clay busts of his likeness all over London. "The Priory School," one of the most interesting stories from Doyle's Holmes canon, makes for a particularly taut and exciting episode in which Holmes and Watson are summoned by the desperate founder of an exclusive prep school for boys to locate the missing son of a duke. An extreme rarity in the Holmes canon, a policeman of real competence named Inspector Baynes (Freddie Jones), is also on the case in "Wisteria Lodge," making this tale all the more interesting for Holmes fans interested in comparing and contrasting investigative styles. "The Devil's Foot" finds Watson pressuring the exhausted sleuth into joining him on a vacation on the Cornish coast. Instead of relaxation, however, Holmes and Watson encounter one of the most horrifying multiple murders they have yet come across.
Doyle caught a fair amount of flak for getting a lot of details wrong in "Silver Blaze," a story about the training and racing of horses. Nevertheless, it is one of his most popular yarns and makes a fine basis for a keen mystery with one of Doyle's most inventive solutions. A strong story with some of the sleuth's most impressive investigatory work, "The Bruce Partington Plans" also saw the return of Mycroft Holmes (Charles Gray), brother of the Great Detective and indispensable repository of government business. Holmes's methodical approach to the arcane problem in "The Musgrave Ritual" is a lot of fun, and Brett and Hardwicke seem to be having a particularly good time outdoors, pursuing the solution under a bit of sunshine. "The Man with the Twisted Lip" is one of the most ingenious of the Holmes stories, satisfying from beginning to end, with a witty conclusion and unexpected moral about class pressures. --Tom Keogh

Timeless.......2007-06-27
Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke are superbly compelling in their roles. It matters not if you know every story and every line of dialogue by heart - these stories never fail to engross, and transport you to another time and place!
"It's devilish, Mr. Holmes, devilish!" .......2007-06-08
There is no doubt that this DVD collection is essential viewing for any Sherlock Holmes buff. For me, like many people out there, Jeremy Brett and Sherlock Holmes have always been one. I first discovered the dark and dangerous world of Holmes and Watson as a child during the mid to late-eighties, when Brett and Hardwicke were brilliantly bringing to life the most famous duo in literary history on PBS. Then I did not see these programs for so long, but to have them come out on DVD is truly wonderful. Just hearing the haunting opening bars of the period music composed for this magnificent series was enough to put a mischievous smile on my face!
This dvd collection features many of the detective's greatest exploits, including "The Empty House," which features the emotional reunion of Holmes and Watson, and one of my very favorite tales, "The Devil's Foot," which has one of the most intriguing plots in the Canon. The film sequence when Holmes and Watson experiment with the deadly African root powder is extraordinary, especially when Holmes wakes from his horrifying hallucination and cries out to his companion, "John!" As any Sherlockian knows, this line does not appear in the original story, but Brett says it with such conviction and emotion that it doesn't really matter. Nor can one forget Holmes' unforgettable encounter with Leon Sterndale:
"How do you know that?"
"I followed you."
"I saw no one."
"That is what you may expect to see when I follow you."
Equally powerful is the touching scene when Holmes literally cracks open the case of the Six Napoleons in front of Watson and Inspector Lestrade.
"Well," said Lestrade, "I've seen you handle a good many
cases, Mr. Holmes, but I don't know that I ever knew a more
workmanlike one than that. We're not jealous of you at Scotland
Yard. No, sir, we are very proud of you, and if you come down
to-morrow, there's not a man, from the oldest inspector to the
youngest constable, who wouldn't be glad to shake you by the
hand."
"Thank you!" said Holmes. "Thank you!" and as he turned
away, it seemed to me that he was more nearly moved by the
softer human emotions than I had ever seen him."
To watch Brett choke up during this scene is pure magic.
These episodes remain quite faithful to the stories for the most part, but take a little artistic license at times, for instance in "Wisteria Lodge: and also the Bruce-Partington Plans. Also the end of the atmospheric "Priory School" features a very dramatic scene which significantly deviates from the original tale, and in fact may be an improvement! One of the extra features is a very enlightening commentary with director John Madden and John Stuart Davies about how they made "The Priory School." The interview with Edward Hardwicke on disc 1 is also fascinating. As a whole, these are the finest and most satisfying film versions of the Canon ever produced or ever likely to be. If you follow the original stories as you watch them, as I have done, you'll discover much of the dialogue is taken straight from the horse's mouth! (Sorry about the pun, but I just watched "Silver Blaze"!) So do yourself a huge favor, and get this set today. These dvds offer countless hours of enjoyment and inspired deduction. The game is afoot!
Very good.......2007-05-07
The discs are securely cased. Reproduction is very good, except for a bit of wavy introductory music on one disc. However, this does not affect the video. I consider the set a good purchase.

In addition to numerous one-hour episodes, Granada Television produced five feature-length Sherlock Holmes films starring Jeremy Brett, easily the best of all screen actors to play the sleuth, and Edward Hardwicke, a warm and capable Dr. Watson. The 1987 feature version of The Sign of Four, the second Holmes novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is faithful to the original story except in one important detail: Dr. Watson does not get the girl. Otherwise, the familiar tale of the death of Bartholomew Sholto and the theft of the Agra treasure is all here, as is a snappy performance by Brett as Holmes doing some of the finest investigative work of his career.
A thrilling blend of detective yarn and Gothic horror, The Hound of the Baskervilles (1988) concerns the apparent return of an old curse upon the Baskerville family in the terrifying form of a gigantic killer hound. Fans of Hardwicke get an opportunity to see his Watson on a solo mission for part of this story, though Brett is never far from the narrative. The supporting cast is very good, and the beast itself, revealed in a famously terrifying finale, is indeed a spooky revelation.
In The Master Blackmailer (1991), Holmes takes on the reputed king of all blackmailers. Charles Augustus Milverton (Robert Hardy) has made a fortune extorting money from the famous and the blue-blooded, and he routinely ruins others' lives when not pleased. Unable to talk Milverton into turning over letters belonging to Lady Eva Brackenwell, Holmes decides to steal them, going undercover as a plumber and even romancing Milverton's housemaid, Agatha (Sophie Thompson), to gain better access in the house. The story builds to a surprisingly violent finale, but the real hook is Brett's performance as the disguised detective and the startling suggestion that Holmes's close contact with Agatha truly moved the bachelor sleuth.
A little overextended as a two-hour movie, The Eligible Bachelor (1992) was made late in the enterprise. It finds Holmes (the ailing Brett, playing an increasingly darker and more neurotic detective) and Watson called upon to help in a case involving the disappearance of Henrietta Doran (Paris Jefferson). Fiancée of the noble Lord Robert St. Simon (Simon Williams), Doran was last seen with a former lover of St. Simon's, Flora Millar (Joanna McCallum). The unimaginative Scotland Yard instantly arrests Millar on suspicion of foul play, but it is Holmes who has to find the missing woman.
The Last Vampyre (1992) was perhaps the most ill-advised of the series. Entirely contrary to the tone and spirit of Doyle's short story "The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire"--which finds Holmes victoriously pitting his well-grounded deductive powers against irrational fears of a rise in bloodsucking--it's something of an embarrassment to the largely wonderful legacy of Granada's earlier efforts. (For the record, most of the creative executives who had worked on the beloved series in the 1980s had been replaced by the time this film was made.) In this version, Holmes does battle with a Dracula-like fellow who may or may not be the real McCoy. There is a great deal of padding to fill out the story, and it is mostly silly, but the ailing Brett gives an ever-fascinating performance, which deviates from Doyle's vision of the detective toward something darker and more personal. --Tom Keogh

The Best.......2007-05-07
These films are a must-have for any serious collector of Brett's version of Holmes. Accept no substitutes.
Jeremy Brett is too hot to handle.......2007-05-06
I absolutely LOVE and ADORE Jeremy Brett. I put these movies on at bedtime so I can doze off the the smooth sound of his voice each nite. He is, as usual, excellent in these films. Brett's movements, his facial expressions, his utterances - my goodness, words do not do justice! He is such a natural Holmes in these films and there truly is no one like him. He simply becomes Holmes - he's the essence.
a must for your holmes collection.......2007-03-31
jeremy brent puts a different twist to the famous sleuth. basil rathbone would be proud.
The Definitive Sherlock Holmes.......2006-11-03
Jeremy Brett is undoubtedly the definitive Sherlock Holmes. Having read all the stories as a child, this television adaptation is the closest anyone has come to capturing the brilliant, yet eccentric sleuth in a video format. The feature film collection is an excellent addition for anyone who owns most of the other episodes. The production values and acting are excellent. The only thing that prevents me from giving this a 5 star rating is the fact that some of the features tend to deviate from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's source material (e.g. The Last Vampyre). Otherwise, the feature film collection should not be missed.
The Sherlock Holmes Feature - Another Fine Collection.......2006-02-23
The Granada production is incredible. The sound track is crystal clear. Jeremy Brett is the definitive Sherlock Holmes.

Sharp, but has compression artifacting........2005-02-19
It seems that all of the Sherlock Holmes 1954-55 TV show DVDs come from the same 16mm prints, so the main difference is in the DVD authoring.
This Laserlight edition is sharp but overly compressed. There is artifacting in almost every scene. The worst example is the episode "LADY BERYL", the backgrounds in stagnent scenes are alive with artifacting movement.
Compare this Laserlight copy to the Alpha/Gotham copy on their "TV Classics" (volume 1) and you will see the difference. The film used by Alpha/Gotham has the same splices, but the artifacting is very minimal, the backgrounds are not vibrating with artifacting.
Laserlight should have kept the DVD down to 4 episodes, or used dual layer technology for better DVD compression.
On the plus side, two episodes have not yet appeared on the seven Alpha/Gotham DVDs or the twenty episode Madacy set:
# 14 "THE FRENCH INTERPRETER" 01/17/55
# 35 "THE HAUNTED GAINSBOROUGH" 07/04/55
So it is worth picking this up to help complete your collection.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous Holmes and Charming Watson.......2006-08-12
Although I must confess that I don't own this particular set (I have the good fortune to own all 39 eps.), I had to put in my two-cents worth. I am baffled as to why this show is not more widely know and discussed by Sherlockians. Although I see it is not a favorite with everyone, it certainly has its merits and strives harder than many other Holmsian adaptations to stay true to the spirit if the Canon.
While I have not yet viewed the Rathbone rendition of THE GREAT DETECTIVE, I must class Ronald Howard's performance among the best. Some may complain about his youth, but we must remember that Holmes and Watson met in their late twenties-Holmes was a young man once :)
Jeremy Brett's performance, though fabulous in intensity and focus, always lacked the dynamic energy that Watson so often describes in Holmes. Brett also lack the charm that Watson so often describes that Holmes could exhibit at will.
Howard also allows the inherent fussiness and impatience that Holmes so often manifests in the Canon to be obvious and correctly, in my opinion, humorous. The only deviations from the Canon in Howard's Holmes are his lack of languor, his horrible, mangled playing on the violin and his lack of physical prowess.
H. Marion Crawford's Watson is very near the dear Doctor we all know and love. He is neither too stupid nor too swift. Because the mysteries in the series are often simple, he at times looks a little more dense then he ought, but that is not Crawford's fault. Altogether, his care and concern for Holmes and his willingness to hazard his own reputation to help Holmes succeed in his cases come straight from the Canon's pages.
I enjoyed the fact that in this series emphasizes Watson's martial prowess. Because they give Holmes no credit as a boxer, Crawford's Watson gains a great deal of importance through this aspect of his character. One other thing: though Watson is charming, in this series he is rather shy around ladies. It makes for a few cute situations, though it is very different from the Canon.
As I watched the series I carefully noted the references to the Canon and actual story reproductions. There were, if my memory serves, four or five reproductions, although only "The Red-Headed League" garners the honor of the short story name. Two episodes not included in this set, "The Case of the Shoeless Engineer" and "The Case of the French Interpreter" will ring bells in the heads of Sherlockians. They are slightly altered renditions of "The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb" and "The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter."
There are many other references to the original texts, but my favorite reference actually notes a Sherlockian dispute, the location of Watson's wound(s). At their first meeting, Holmes comments on Watson's wounded shoulder. At the end of the episode, Holmes is working away on something at his desk and Watson, newspaper in hand, storms out of the flat. As the door slams behind him, Holmes looks up and comments, "Maybe he was wounded in more than just the shoulder," and then returns to work. :D That one had me rotf, let me tell you.
My final recommendation: get the episodes. It is a very different take on Holmes and one that I think brings out the better elements of his convoluted and irascible nature. Watson is pleasant and gentle, as well as being rather protective of his friend. A charming combination, and one I will be enjoying for years to come!
Excellent find!.......2005-06-19
While this series may not be as largely budgeted or as well-known as other depictions of Doyle's series of works, it is nonetheless very enjoyable. While the stories in it are not perfectly in keeping with what Doyle wrote originally [Many are, in fact, original and not of the series at all], the series has the essence of what Doyle intended, something so often lacking in other Holmes films.
If you tire of bad portrayals, horrid 'creative' reworkings of the classics which cease to be about Holmes at all, this series may be a relief to you. And with such a good price, it is well-worth the time spent watching.
Young and appreciated all the same.......2004-12-29
Being rather young I haven't been able to see many classics, and happened to come across Digiview's volume one of this series. Two episodes in their mere 3 episode DVD are not included in the 10 episode set, but from the three I have watched I was astonished. I love old movies, and adore old black and white films, and have always had a love for Sherlock Holmes. So you can imagine how ecstatic I was when I found this. Howard plays the role of Holmes brilliantly. Very naturally and his acting overall is very good-Then again, most old acting is compared to these days-. I also loved the portrayl of Lestade, funny and rather believable. I must agree that many of the actors in this film, especially Ronald Howard are possibly the best suited for the roles out of the many actors who have done Holmes movies. It's definately worth while to watch. If I could get my nine-year-old, black-and-white-show-hating, younger brother to actually enjoy them-without using force-then there's got to be something good about them.
One of the best Holmes adaptations for television!!!.......2004-06-16
In 1954,writer-producer Sheldon Reynolds brought Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary detective Sherlock Holmes to television screens in a 36-episode series that was one of the first ever television series made for syndication (television was about six years old at the time!!).Ronald Howard, the son of legendary actor Leslie Howard, stars in the title role along with the witty H.Marion Crawford as his partner-in-crime Dr.Watson and Archie Duncan as the hilarious Inspector Lestrade that brings more tongue-in-cheek mystery than serious crime solving! The series' storylines ironically has nothing to do with the original Conan Doyle stories (THE RED-HEADED LEAGUE being the only episode of the series that's based on a Conan Doyle story),but nevertheless doesn't take away the humor, continuity,or style. This Madacy 2-disc TV Favorites edition contains ten out of the thirty-six episodes that includes: THE CASE OF THE EIFFEL TOWER,THE CASE OF THE JOLLY HANGMAN (incorrectly states this as the second episode on disc one,it's actually the LAST episode of disc one!),THE CASE OF THE CUNNINGHAM HERITAGE (the pilot episode),THE CASE OF THE DIAMOND TOOTH,THE CASE OF THE NEUROTIC DETECTIVE,THE RED-HEADED LEAGUE,THE CASE OF THE VANISHED DETECTIVE,THE NIGHT-TRAIN RIDDLE,THE CASE OF THE PENNSYLVANIA GUN,and THE CASE OF THE BAKER STREET BACHELORS.Plus,a videotaped on-screen introduction from Horror master Christopher Lee (who starred as Watson in Hammer Films' version of THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES and as Holmes in several made for television movies) rounds out both discs as well!! Although all of the shows are in glorious black & white and are uncut, there is a catch. Some of the episodes contain video glitches and artifacts as looks from what could be taken from the ten tape box set of the series, also produced by Madacy.Despite these minor problems, the DVD set is a great collection of shows that are fast-paced,humorous,and fun to watch! I recommend this set as well as the Madacy recently-released five volume collection of this series on DVD (which I hope to find soon!!) and enjoy the finest hours of television's first Sherlock Holmes!!!
Also available as part of a larger collection.......2004-05-30
Madacy recently released a 5-DVD set of 20 episodes, including the 10 episodes in this set. If you like this TV series, you might consider getting the larger set instead of this one. The ASIN for the larger set is B0001Z3TS4.
I personally like this TV series. Ronald Howard is more personable than most others who have played Sherlock Holmes - more human - but still quirky and particular. In this series, he seems to enjoy being smarter than the other characters, but he does it with more of a sense of humor, rather then being obnoxious about it. Like any TV series, some episodes are better than others, but I found them all enjoyable.
