4 out of 5 stars "I like a messy bed....".......2007-02-12

A few minutes into "Five Minutes to Live" (AKA "Door-to-Door Maniac"), I thought I'd made a mistake and wasted money buying this film. But once the film's rough beginning moved into the main drama, and I became used to the film's cheap production values, I realized this film possessed some fascinating qualities.

Murderer Johnny Cabot (Johnny Cash in his first film role) is on the run with girlfriend Doris (Midge Ware) when he's approached by crook Fred Dorella (Vic Tayback) to do a big job. Dorella's plan is for Johnny to invade the home of bank employee Ken Wilson (Donald Woods) while his wife Nancy (Cay Forrester) is home alone. With Johnny holding Nancy hostage, Dorella will then approach Wilson at the bank demanding money for Nancy's safe release. Dorella is sure that with Nancy hostage and Johnny ready to kill her at a moment's notice, Wilson is certain to hand over the money with no fuss.

Dorella has spent weeks keeping Wilson and his home under surveillance, and as a consequence, he knows Wilson's schedule down to the last second. Dorella's surveillance leads him to believe that the Wilsons have a happy home life, but that conclusion is false. Mr. Wilson is very unhappily married and his demanding mistress has just talked him into dumping his wife and skipping town.

One of the reasons this film works so well is the universal truths it contains. Dorella, for example, watches the Wilsons from a distance and jumps to all the wrong conclusions. Dorella confuses routine and respectability with love and happiness, but the Wilsons' happy home is a facade covering adultery, boozing and bourgeois pretensions. There's one great scene near the beginning of the film when Cabot and Dorella are waiting for Wilson to go to work. Cabot expresses disdain and disbelief that anyone in their right minds would keep to Wilson's rigid, predictable schedule, and Dorella explains that Wilson loves his routine, and that some people are just like that. To the Dorellas and the Cabots of this world, people like the Wilsons are enigmas, but the reverse is also true--as Nancy Wilson finds out when Cabot enters her home....

Johnny Cash seems to warm up to his role as the deranged and very strange killer, and he's certainly unleashed when he has Nancy at home alone. A tangled, psychotic mess, when Cabot isn't waving his gun around, he's spouting his theories about women, or strumming his guitar and singing death threats. Clearly he hates people like the Wilsons, and he delights far too much in smashing up Nancy's precious little objects. When boredom sets in, he begins playing with his victim, and his games have a decidedly sick, sadistic and sexual edge. Let's put it like this...I've never seen a film in which a negligee appeared as part of the opening credits.

But apart from Cash, there are some other great little moments here--the pushy, chocolate-munching Priscilla (Norma Vardem) a local matron who enjoys ordering everyone around, and little Ron Howard as the precocious, neglected son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson. All in all, not a bad little crime thriller directed by Bill Karn ("Ma Barker's Killer Brood"). The film is about 80 minutes long, and there's a DVD extra--a pilot episode of a television western "The Night Rider." I bought the cheapo version from Critic's Choice Video, and the quality was perfectly acceptable--displacedhuman

    2 out of 5 stars There's no "Hello I'm Johnny Cash" here.......2007-01-27

This has the makings of a decent crime thriller, but it gets overdone in the storyline. Cash shows he's an actor in this as the sociopathic Johnny Talon. I also feel Vic(Mel Sharples)Tayback did a great performance in this as Fred his partner. This is an odd couple indeed, but there's nothing to laugh at here. Fred hires Johnny to hold up a bank, and the catch is they take the vice president's wife which Johnny does, and Fred does the hold-up. There's one catch though, and that's the vice-president doesn't care as he's about ready to run off with his mistress. Cash not only does a impressive acting job, but he actually shows off his guitar abilities here, and he's actually good. Unfortunately, this had some moments that were overdone like where the woman Priscilla keeps calling the vice-president's house to speak to his wife, and then there was little Ronnie Howard as thier little boy who makes it home just in time bringing the police with him. I found the ending too predictable not like in "Jeopardy" where Barbara Stanwyck convinces an bank robber to help her husband as he's caught under a fishing pier, and when he frees her husband she lets him escape. I feel the soundtrack was good, Cash was good, and so was Tayback, but the storyline was overdone by about 15 minutes. Wait till Walmart sells this for a buck.

3 out of 5 stars Cash the Bad Guy.......2005-01-08

Cash plays a villian who conspires with a mobster to rob a bank by kidnapping a banker's wife and demanding money. He plays a kind of derranged villian who hasn't a problem killing another person (except children). It's a decent, low-budget film, the kind of film you'll see on a Saturday afternoon on television--nothing remarkable. His acting is a bit stiff. He sings the song, "Five Minutes to Live." I've seen him in other, more exellent films. This one is for a collector.

          Product Description

Australia released, PAL/Region 0 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada. LANGUAGES: English (Dolby Digital 2.0), SYNOPSIS: Originally released in 1961 as Five Minutes to Live, this low-budget crime drama was later rereleased as Door-to-Door Maniac. Fred (Tayback) narrates the film in flashback, detailing a suburban bank robbery that goes awry. In his simple plan, he hires a hard-up hood, Johnny Cabot (Cash) to take the wife of the bank's vice president hostage. Cabot will hold her until he gets a call alerting him that Fred has been successful in getting ransom money. Cabot waits, and watches the Wilson house as the husband (Woods) leaves for the bank and their young son (Howard) heads off to school. Posing as a door-to-door guitar instructor, he forces his way into the house and takes Nancy Wilson (Forrester) hostage. At the bank, Fred talks his way into Ken Wilson's office, and presents his personal check for $70,000, intending that Wilson will withdraw the funds to cover the check as a ransom for his wife. He has Wilson call home to prove that Nancy is being held by the unstable Cabot, and gives Wilson 5 minutes to make his decision. If Fred fails to call the house back, Cabot is to kill Nancy. Wilson confesses to Fred that he has been planning to run off to Las Vegas with Ellen (Mason), the woman he has been having an affair with, and Fred will be doing him a favor by getting rid of Nancy. But as the minutes tick by, Wilson cracks and agrees to give him the money. Fred make the first call to save Nancy. The clock starts ticking again, another 5 minutes, for Fred to collect the money and get out of the bank safely. SPECIAL FEATURES: Trailer(s), Interactive Menu,
