The role of Mr. Moto is such an intriuging character and Peter Lorre plays him perfectly. Mr. Moto's Last Warning has just the right amount of suspense and chracter development. Very nice clean entertainment.

MR. MOTO bad follow-up........2007-06-16

I purchased Volume One of the MR. MOTO series from Fox, and was delighted with the entire package. The restoration of these films is perfect, and for 1930s' programmers, they are surprisingly exciting, with fine production values.

That said, Volume Two gives us the poorest MR. MOTO features, weak scripts, inept comedy relief. Several of these films need "dramatic relief" from the comedy. It was not WW II that stopped this series;
it was the dwindling quality of the films. Save your money.

Mr. Moto's last Warning.......2007-06-14

This is the epitomy of the Mr. Moto films and is an outstanding example from this series of films. Mr. Moto is traveling by ship to the northern Suez port and is killed early in the film shortly after docking. There is a ring of spies and sabotuers that plan to scuttle the French Fleet at the mouth of the canal to stop all marine passage. Moto wears disquises to remain unknown, and yet mixes in well with the enemy agents to learn what they plan. Comic relief comes from several Brits: the Port Commander, and a self centered traveler who has no common sense. People are killed left and right until Moto swings into action and dispatches the entire band of spys. He takes no prisoners and while his methods seem a bit extreme by today's standards, he eliminates the need for a public trial for these patently unscrupulous men.
This is the movie that pulls together all the parts of earlier films and provides a great adventure of non-stop thrills.
I found it a bit period in nature, but completely satisfying in its means of resolving a weighty problem, including coming back from the dead.

Magnificent Moto.......2007-04-10

Both collections 1 and 2 are fun filled evenings. Invite a few friends over and have a Moto party. MUCH better than a super bowl party - Moto is entertaining and even a bit cheesy-campy - not hormonal on screen or off.

Excellent Adventure/Detective Series.......2007-03-29

The Mr. Moto series is an excellent group of adventure/detective movies. Peter Lorre's characterization as Mr. Moto and a fine supporting cast elevates these movies above the usual "B" detective movies.

The restoration of these films by Twentieth Century Fox is excellent. The picture quality of this set(and its companion set) are far superior to the public domain versions of these films.

Please consider two (2) other related purchases (not to mention to other volume of Mr. Moto films) to become an expert fan of Mr. Moto and Peter Lorre. Howard Berlin has written a concise and well-organized overview of the Mr. Moto series, The Complete Mr. Moto Phile: A Casebook. This softcover book is available for approximately $[...] from Amazon.com. Stephen Youngkin has written a book on Peter Lorre, The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre. Youngkin's book is one of the most comprehensive and best researched biographes of a Hollywood star - it is a a treasure trove of information about Peter Lorre. MR. MOTO'S LAST WARNING (1939) is an interesting and entertaining final entry in the Moto series that starred Austrian- born actor Peter Lorre as the Japanese super sleuth. LAST WARNING takes place in Port Said, Egypt. A scrum of scoundrels are scheming to surreptitiously blow up Allied battle ships and foment distrust between France and England.
Chief scoundrel being Ricardo Cortez, here playing a foreign agent masquerading as a ventriloquist - Fabian the Great & Alf is the name of his act. Rounding out the cast is a number of skilled Fox contracts players - John Carradine, Virginia Fields, and George Sanders being among the more recognizable names.
This Alpha discount dvd of a public domain movie is pretty chopped up. The black and white images are murky, there are a number of scratches on the print, and for some odd reason the opening title sequence is missing. It's a chore to watch a film that's this physically beat up.
To the best of my knowledge, LAST WARNING is the only Mr. Moto title in the public domain, so this is the only chance most of us will have to catch the Moto fever. Even though Lorre's Moto is an intelligent character, Moto's usually undercover, disguised behind thick glasses and a sing-song, Good evening, preeze, persona. I doubt the title-holder of the other five movies featuring such a politically incorrect character will be releasing them anytime soon.
Too bad. This one was fun and had a lot going for it, even going so far as to include a couple of underwater scenes with Moto fighting a helmeted diver in the murky depths under a pier. A fun movie.

Where are the other Moto films?.......2005-01-06

This is a good entry in the Mr. Moto canon, which comprises 8 films made between 1937-39. It is not my favorite, however--Mr. Moto Takes a Vacation, with excellent performances by Lionel Atwill and Joseph Schildkraut, is the best of those I've seen. However, they have been very hard to find, and I've only seen about half of them. Lorre is wonderful as the mysterious Mr. Moto, and the films are great fun and skilfully made, with a host of terrific character actors--in addition to Atwill and Schildkraut, Leon Ames, Jean Hersholt, Keye Luke, John Carradine, George Sanders, Virginia Field, Ricardo Cortez, Maxie Rosenbloom, and many others all turn in outstanding period performances. It is a real shame that more are not being made available--I know that art houses sometimes stage special showings, and I keep hoping that someone will release all eight on DVD. PLEASE!

Not Too Bad At All!.......2003-12-11

I give this 3 stars for what it is.... a B-Grade, wartime, espionage thriller. It's also one of the better Mr. Moto movies. Peter Lorre is always good and this time he is up against wartime saboteurs George Sanders and Ricardo Cortez. John Carradine is a double agent who.... well, I wont give it away because that is one of the more exiting parts of this 71-minute feature. All-in-all, pretty good, and a neat little time killer at a decent price. The Alpha dvd has a good definition VHS-quality picture and the sound is O.K. I've seen a lot worse Alpha product, believe me. This is a cut above their usual spy/mystery/thriller movies because it was made at 20th Century Fox and NOT Monogram or PRC. If you like this sort of thing, you wont be disappointed.

I thought I was getting a different movie from MR. MOTO'S LAST WARNING, but this DVD contains "Double Feature" with a "The Shadow" movie and "Mr. Moto's Last Warning". It has a unauthentic looking 2-color wrapper with made in Singapore written on it. I have not opened it yet, I am not sure if DVD has anything on it. I want to return it but I would lose $$$ due to postage cost. I have been duped. DO NOT BUY. I am surprised that Amazon has this for sale.

#1 Mr Moto's Last Warning (1939 71 min) A Japanese man claiming to be Mr Moto, of the International Police, is abducted and murdered soon after disembarking from a ship at Port Said in Egypt. The real Mr Moto is already in Port Said, investigating a conspiracy against the British and French governments. The dead man was his colleague, impersonating him to throw the conspirators off his scent. Mr Moto recognises one of the conspirators as a British Secret Service agent, and together they discover that the gang have mined the harbour in preparation for the arrival of the French fleet. Their aim is to throw the blame onto the British, which may start a second World War. #2 The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934 94 min) Bob and Jill Lawrence are on a winter sports holiday with their teenage daughter Betty. When their friend Louis Bernard is shot whilst dancing with Jill, he tells Bob of an assassination about to take place in London. Fearing that their plot will be revealed, the assassins kidnap Betty in order to keep the Lawrence's quiet. Bob and Jill return to London and take matters into their own hands.

Good film, but buy the box sets :-).......2007-05-13

Very enjoyable mystery with Peter Lorre in a Charlie Chan like role. However, this film has been availale by itself for ages on both DVD and VHS. You are better off buying the 2 Fox box sets, because it's the only way to get all 8 (including this one) films that Lorre did with the character, not to mention as a bonus on set 2, a rare chance to see what Henry Silva did with it 30 years later.:-)
