This well-acted, sweeping herstorical epic focuses on the lives of three women, beginning in 1853. China Beach's Dana Delany is Sarah, the family matriarch, whose little sister Euphemia (a delightful and empathetic Tina Majorino) has been living with her best friend, Georgia (beautiful Rachael Leigh Cook), and Georgia's parents (Michael York, Julie Carmen) on a large, bucolic Georgia plantation. After the sisters' father dies, Sarah's husband, upstanding Texas Ranger Bartlett (Powers Boothe), takes "Pheemy" down to Peach Tree, Texas, to live with him and Sarah.
Pheemy and Georgia begin a correspondence chronicling their divergent lives. As Pheemy and her family work their farm and battle Santa Ana and hostile Indians, indulged Georgia is coming to terms with her family's greatest secret: she is one-quarter Native American. Majorino and Cook are excellent in their demanding roles and offer a challenge for their adult counterparts (Annabeth Gish as Pheemy, Angelina Jolie as Georgia). This film, originally a TV miniseries, is an earnest attempt to depict the difficult--and often tragic--role women were compelled to endure during this historically rich but phenomenally difficult time. True Women has plenty of action, but relationships, politics, and grim reality are the true focus, as issues of sexuality, prejudice, human rights, and of course slavery are eagerly examined in the frontier setting. The sensitive should be forewarned: it seems like there is a death every five minutes. --N.F. Mendoza

True Women DVD.......2007-06-11
The movie was great!!!!! I love the true Texas and family history in this movie. I have now bought the True Women Cookbook with family pictures and recipes and stories about the family.
A must for sisters, mothers, girlfriends.......2007-04-10
This may become one of my favorite movies (Last of the Dogmen-favorite). It shows the strength of women under most difficult circumstances. I found myself imagining what it would have been like to be a woman living in those times. I think about how fortunate not to have our brothers/sons/husbands etc. fighting each other in our own country, and not to be having wars in our own country.
Overall, I found it very inspiring, heartwarming/wrenching, and hard to watch in some scenes. I think I will buy more copies for Mother's Day gifts for sisters/friends/daughter, etc.
Will be watching it again, and probably again..........
True Women.......2007-02-18
This is a movie that my wife has liked for several years. We purchased it on DVD format instead of VHS so that we would not have to keep renting it. Product was fine but the shipping costs were a little excessive.
Happy Trails.......2007-01-11
Arrived exactly as advertised. Product was in perfect condition and played without a hitch. Will trade again with these folks. Thanks.
This one is a must see!.......2006-01-03
This is not a film for everyone. Although it can be considered a family film, the many scenes of violence (and a couple of sexual ones), make it viewing for a more mature audience. Recommended for ages 12 (14 for boys), and older. Descretion advised.
The overall production is superb. As is the acting. I watched all 3 hours of it, straight thru. It was entirely enthralling.
Historically enlightening, the film shows how rugged the pioneer women of Texas were. They were more than tough, they were superwomen.
A sweeping epic that encompasses a generation of 3 Texas pioneer familes, it adeptly shows the inside look at the Muscogee Creek 'Trail of Tears' (from Georgia), the War with Mexico, the defense against vindictive Commanche, and the homefront battles during the Civil War. All from the women's perspective. Relating their sacrifices, friendships and family life, as they strive to survive some of the most grueling times, of the early years of Texas.
Angelina Jolie and Annbeth Gish both show their broad range as actors, but i think it was the character of Dana Delaney that was the anchor of the film. Although she smokes a pipe like a man, she is reserved & resourceful...and although tender as a wife, mother and sister, yet she's as tough as nails when it comes to defending her loved-ones. Willing to sacrifice her own life in doing so. I loved that about her.
This film accurately portrays what pioneers were really like. Real women and real men...they sure don't make 'em like that anymore.
This one is a must see!

like watching a 3.2million dollar troma movie.......2005-02-07
this was absolutelly amazing. I bought this with out knowing what this was or if it was good. The story is amazing the gore is awesome for the time, the acting is amazing, and lots of big explosions. But one of my favorite things is the soundtrack, its filled with lots of electronic synth, helps pull off the futuristic 1995 aspect. this reminds me if lloyd kaufman made a 3 million dollar 70's movie any troma fan would love or peter jackson fan.
This is a great DVD.......2003-11-07
Being the first time that I have seen this on DVD I only had low expectations. What a surprise! This disc is fantastic! You not only get a pristine transfer of the movie,(and a great soundtrack job)but also some of the most entertaining commentary and features yet. What makes this disc special is that instead of congratulating themselves for making a film classic the filmmakers instead offer some hilarious excuses for their wretched film. The funniest of the interviews is with actress Lynda Stoner who slams the endeavor but skirts around the issue of her lousy performance. All in all: Great job again Anchor Bay. The movie is actually a pretty good exploiter so ignore the critics and get ready to have fun.
Only ever seen the butchered U.K video. This should be good........2003-09-13
Escape 2000 was released on video in the U.K during the early eighties, as Turkey Shoot, with a lurid cover design, and the prospect of some good old ultra violence, with just a dash of the in out in out, to mix things up. Not in the hacked up by the BBFC 18cert version that i first viewed, as a teen. So the chance to, after so many years get an unrated in 1.2.35:1 widescreen dvd is great news to me, just pre-ordered mine.
Plus being Anchor Bay they've managed to get the director to do a commentary plus there are interviews with cast and crew. Has to be worth the price of the hunt.....
Tim
aka Turkey Shoot.......2001-11-09
This futuristic actioner directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith is set in a re-education and behaviour modification camp of the Society who imprison "deviants" and endlessly repeat their motto "Freedom is obedience. Obedience is work. Work is life". The screenplay by Jon George and Neill Hicks, based on a story by George Schenck, Robert Williams and exec producer David Hemmings, seems to be influenced by the Nazi death camps, with the leader named Thatcher as presumably a comment on Margaret Thatcher, though the film could hardly be taken seriously as a political allegory, or on any level for that matter.
Of course those in power of the camp are corrupt and they hunt inmates they release in the local bushland, given a head start, including Steve Railsback, Olivia Hussey, and Lynda Stoner, who at one point frollicks in water so we get to see her in wet yellow dungarees.
The treatment allows for various acts of sadism, some gore, and multiple deaths, though thankfully the Society team suffer too. The idea of one hunter having one target is soon abandoned so cross-cutting between the individual hunted is arbitrary. This kind of cat and mouse adventure is morally bankrupt, only giving pleasure to those who enjoy witnessing humiliations. Outre touches include Carmen Duncan's campy lesbian wearing multi-coloured eye shadow, the ludicrous "freak" who appears to be more werewolf than human, and a snake crawling out of a skull's eye socket.
Low budget, escapist action B-flick for concept fans.......1999-01-19
Steve Railsback stars in this quirky sci-fi chase flick. It's reminiscent of more recent "mortal combat" style movies where several different characters square off against each other in battles to the death. The nefarious villains hunt the defenseless "fugatives" with high-tech and/or unique weapons of choice that fit their personalities. When I was a kid I played this very "game" with several of my G.I.Joe action figures. G.I. Joe in fatigues (Railsback and crew) vs.assorted action figures costumed in tin-foil and clay (pretty much like the baddies in this movie). There's the sinister hunter, the cyborg, the wookie/werewolf, and the evil temptress. In fact, I think the writer/director played the same game as a child. It is violent and stereotypical of this genre, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching!

Customer Reviews:
So bad it's funny... okay, no, it's just bad.......2007-02-10
Don't ask me why I watched this, I have absolutely no idea. It somehow ended up in my Netflix queue (I suspect monkeys) and I decided to give it a try. I ended up using fast-forward for much of the movie simply to get to the end. Even then, I wasted about thirty minutes watching this clunker. Of course it is derivative, but the problem is that it's not even good at what it copies.
Two things immediately jumped out at me when I watched it: the indeterminate accents, and the amateurish directing.
It was only when I went to the "making of" featurette that I got answers to these puzzles. First of all, the movie was shot in Spain with mostly spanish actors speaking English, or at least attempting it. The accents are all over the map. Sometimes an actor will have a perfect American accent, and then in the next scene he/she will slip. One actor was British, adding to the confusion. The lead actress was the most confusing, because when her accent slipped she didn't sound Spanish, or British. Turns out she's from Iceland! And all of this makes sense when you realize that the director doesn't speak English. So when his actors spoke differently from scene to scene, he couldn't tell. He spoke to some actors directly and others through an interpreter, but he never knew what the heck they were saying. What a dumb way to make a movie.
The other puzzle was answered when someone explained that this was the director's first movie. It shows. The scenes are very poorly framed. He has borrowed ideas from a dozen other movies, but never competently. The whole thing looks silly and cheesy. It doesn't even have much in the way of laughs. And I'm reminded of a slightly profane comment by director Rob Cohen repeating a comment made by someone at a screening of his movie The Skulls--if you have two hot young people kissing in a movie and you don't show the goods, you're just wasting time, so cut the scene. "The Nun" is a pretty tame horror movie in that regard, if you know what I mean...
On second thought, don't get thee to a nunnery.......2006-07-23
The Nun (or La Monja) seemed to have all kinds of potential. I mean, who doesn't want to see a movie about a nun who returns from the grave to kill the girls she hated so much when she was their teacher? Here, the Nun can only manifest in water, which even gives the film an odd little angle to call its own. Throw in some pretty good special effects and an effectively creepy atmosphere, and you start asking yourself why this film was denied a theatrical release. Then you watch the film, and the reason eventually becomes clear - The Nun is cursed with a relatively poor script and a really lame ending. I found this particularly disappointing because I had truly admired the scripts of Jaume Balaguero in Darkness and The Nameless.
The story really starts eighteen years in the past, where we watch Sister Ursula give her class of female students a tough lesson on the wages of sin. She's particularly unhappy with Mary, Cristy, Susana, Zoe, and Eulalia because they just aren't living up to the standards of the saints they supposedly share their names with. Back in the present, we are treated to a well-paced, atmospheric scene culminating in the death of Mary - the special effects of the water-borne Nun are really quite impressive here. Having witnessed the culmination of her mother's death, young Eva (Anita Briem) soon finds herself in the middle of an unbelievable mystery. In short order, after an old classmate of her mother's is similarly murdered, and she finds evidence that her mother was planning a trip back to Spain to visit her other boarding school friends, Eva insists on taking the trip herself and finding out why and how her mother truly died. Accompanied by her best friend Julia (Beven Blanco) and Julia's annoying boyfriend Joel (Alistair Freeland) - and picking up a seminary student named Gabriel (Manu Fullola) along the way - the group eventually find themselves at the long-abandoned site of the old boarding school. It is here, in the company of the two former school girls yet to die, that the script begins deviating south every so often.
While the CGI effects aren't always perfectly believable, the Nun's every appearance makes for a highlight of the film. She's pretty evil-looking when she wants to be, and she knows what she's doing when it comes to killing former Catholic school girls. The bodies don't always end up in one piece, and most of the death shots are framed quite well. Unfortunately, rather than just sit back and enjoy the ghost nun's handiwork, we're compelled to learn what really happened at the boarding school eighteen years ago as the characters slowly begin putting all of the pieces together. Prepare yourselves for several remarkable leaps of logic and an ending that is simply not tenable based on everything that has come before. You may also want to prepare yourself to hit rewind every so often - this is basically a Spanish production, and even though the characters all speak English, I sometimes struggled to understand the dialogue of several actresses' strong Spanish accents.
With its impressive cinematography, suitably dark atmosphere, and handful of satisfying deaths, I think The Nun is certainly worth watching. I was actually prepared to give the film four stars - despite its sizable plot holes - until the ending rolled around. It's never pretty when a decent film commits cinematic suicide - especially when it is we, the audience, who are forced to swallow the bitter pill of a poisonous conclusion.
Delicious movie disaster.......2006-06-30
I had a hard time deciding whether i should rate this film with one or five stars. the bottom line is that this is not a bad film, it's an absolute disaster of a film. BUT, this is so bad it's good. I saw this at the movies last night hoping for a little scare, and instead I had a good hearty laugh from beginning to end.
if you are older than 13 years old, and if you have more than 5 working brain cells, THE NUN will be as scary, believable or logical as an episode of "Scooby Doo".
The idea is not bad: Spirit of dead nun seeks revenge on former boarding school girls, giving them the brutal deaths women saints suffered.
The production values are strong: the sets look fantastic, music and mood are great. Most of the acting is even passable. However, this movie has more holes than a slice of swiss cheese: This is a Spanish production in spoken English, and the language-culture inconsistencies are very distracting. Some of the special effects are cool, but most of them are annoyingly amateurish, and the scares are all just like someone screaming "boo" as they jump from behind the door.
The script is its worst flaw. Besides the predictable plot, this movie has some of the silliest, campiest dialogue ever written and the situations ae shockingly laughable. Example:
ZOE: "I have no intention of dying burned in an oven!!!"
(moments later)
ZOE: "I am going to the kitchen"
Yes, this was a terrible movie. But we had so much fun watching it I feel this movie deserves a life as a midnight movie, or slumber party entertainment.
A surprisingly captivating horror movie.......2006-06-27
Nun is chilling film, with deliciously devilish special effects, a fast script, and well executed acting. In it, Eve, an innocent eighteen year old that just graduated high school comes home from a party to find her mother's throat cut, and she sees a nun at the scene of the crime. Of course no one believes her, until the funeral, when she meets a mysterious woman that knew her mother years ago. So begins a frightening tale of judgment, murder, and revenge.
The special effects were well done and engaging. Since the nun can only appear in water, and only appears to certain people, some of the images are quite interesting. The plot moves extremely fast. So many people are murdered it feels brutal, and leaves you wondering just who will be left at the end of the movie. The ending is surprising and leaves you with that `nice twist' feeling.
Over all, Nun is a slick horror movie that's far better than many that have made it to the big screen in the past few years (Fog, Cursed, and Darkness, for instance). So if you're looking for a fun and stylish horror movie, then check out Nun. You won't be disappointed.
Highest recommendations.
NUNSENSICAL.......2006-06-25
The trailer for this movie is probably better than the whole film. Stuffed with oodles of atmosphere and some unique and spooky effects, the movie fails due to its frenzied plot, mediocre acting and a soundtrack that often overshadows the dialogue. Some of the accents also make it difficult to understand. The movie's twist ending is also rather forced, and it negates the basic plot of the film. Lions Gate needs to be more selective in the films it finances.

Mysteries of Adolescence & Discovery.......2007-06-25
I saw this film over 15 years ago, and it still resonates in my memory.
For me, Oriana was enchanting, and I returned to the theater to see it 4 or more time, unusual for me.
Impressions of this film may be very different. This is a genre of mysteries of adolescence and discovery film, and for those with imagination who relish the leisurely unraveling of clues, this is a must see.
Mysterious aunt Oriana.......2007-04-24
This is one of the most beautiful films of latin american cinema!
Venezuelan Gothic.......2005-07-16
Maria (Daniela Silverio), a young French woman, inherits a hacienda in Venezuela from her Aunt Oriana (Doris Wells). Maria and her husband travel to the hacienda with the idea of selling it and returning to France. When they arrive, the remote hacienda is in a terrible state of repair. Apparently, Oriana wouldn't allow the house to be cleaned, and she insisted that she even wanted the dust to remain untouched until her niece arrived to claim her inheritance.
The well-dressed French couple enters the hacienda, and they enter another world. As Maria tries to complete an inventory prior to the sale, memories overwhelm her. She spent one summer with her aunt in her peculiar household in Venezuela, and the film goes back and forth in time sifting through Maria's memories. From the beginning of the film, there's clearly a mystery afoot, and Maria's memories gradually reveal the secret of the hacienda for the viewer.
"Oriana" unfolds with a strong strain of Gothicism. The lush Venezuelan jungle surrounds the hacienda, but inside the house all life and joy seems extinguished. There's a surly uppity servant, rooms not to be entered, precious objects that are not to be touched, and an ugly secret to be uncovered.
Unfortunately, the film is rather dull, and the characters too uninteresting to arouse little more than mild curiosity about Oriana's story. The film jumps back and forth in time with the adult Maria's return to the hacienda, and the adolescent Maria visiting the hacienda for the first time. There seems to be little gained from showing the adult Maria wandering around a filthy hacienda pouring over various objects. Each object sparks a trip down memory lane, and then we get a little bit more of the story of Oriana. This sort of scene works once, but then after that it's redundant. In spite of the film's exotic location, "Oriana" fails to arouse enough interest and suspense to keep one committed to the plot--displacedhuman
The real supreme masterpiece of Venezuelan Cinema!.......2005-05-13
Twenty years is relatively a short space of time, but perhaps enough to reflect about the grandess of this pecualiar and immortal artwork.
The feminine universe in my birthplace literally loads the atmosphere. Venezuela astonishes you due its freahness, captivating greeness, the spectacular Avila Mountain of two and a half kilometers height is a remarkable proof about this statement. You look it and your feelings change. You can walk through this mountain every weekened and feel the Earth Call.
So the charm, beauty and powerful gaze of the woman has captivated and engaged the literary world. From Gallegos to Uslar Pietri, from Bonalde a great poet to Camejo ( the reknown poet employed in 21 grams), the ingenuity and strength of the Venezuelan woman has resisted so many combats. most of them painful.
Fina Torres rescued through this intimate portrait a simple story of hopeless, disencounters, lack of affection and loneliness of Oriana told superbly in two planes. Yesterday and today are finely shown without any drop of soap melodram, a very well made script and solid performance of Doris Wells one of the greatest actress ever born in this country.
Fina Torres told a very common story told so many times and lived at least by thousands unknown women around the world. But this sad portrait allowed to show with all the possible freshness and charming visual poetry some unforgettable aspects of our citizenship. But beware that episode goes far beyond the limits of a nation to remain as silent witeness of the injustice and cross eyed disfunction in ancient generations of unfinished and anonymus stories through the little history.

pasolini questions italians.......2007-02-26
this is a fine documentary from pier paolo pasolini.. Pier Paolo confronts average italians on the streets to find out just how modern they are.. The results are interesting... Especially in a time like the 60's to see just how shocked and conservative people were is very interesting.. Those who speak up in this movie are almost unanimously against equality, feminisim, and any outside form of sexuality.. Pasolini shows a confused Italy and an italy unwilling to confront taboos.. I would strongly recommend this documentary which is probably even more relevant today in a time when freedom of speech and expression is becoming such a big issue once again...
Poor edition of a decent film.......2003-05-16
Pasolini's Love Meetings is an interesting and humorous look at sexual ideas and taboos in early 1960's Italy. Through a series of interviews with members of the general public in various cities in Italy, Pasolini creates a pastiche (and gets a wide variety of responses) about such topics as divorce, homosexuality, prostitution, and equality. It's fairly interesting and entertaining, until the very end when Pasolini makes his "conclusion," essentially stating his own political beliefs, some of which are opposed to the information he's gathered in his film.
My major complaints about the disc are the transfer and the subtitles. The subtitles are all-white and are burned in (not optional). The subtitles might not have been such a problem if the film hadn't been in black-and-white and very washed out, making it impossible to read them in various places in the film. The print itself is scratched, but watchable.
I'd recommend this film for Pasolini completists and people studying the history of the documentary - it serves as an interesting precursor to I Am Curious - Yellow. As it's unlikely that Love Meetings will get a better edition any time soon, (at least in Region 1), if you're interested, check it out.

great spoof of vintage horror!.......2004-12-17
Fans of old school horror will love this one. I did! The characters based on Lugosi and Karloff are extremely funny and Randall Malone is the lead actor and he's perfect for this type of material (although Conrad Brooks steals the show). I loved every second of this and all fans of vintage horror should check out Hollywood Mortuary for a good time.
