One of those movies that helped usher out the era of action films that had plots that made any sense (and also helped reverse the direction of Patrick Swayze's career arc), Road House concerns a handsome, existential bouncer in a rinky-dink honky-tonk who owns both a degree in philosophy and a Mercedes. And that's perhaps the most believable aspect of the whole movie. Swayze stars as Dalton, "the best bouncer in the business," who runs afoul of Wesley (Ben Gazzara), the meanest SOB round these parts, by taking up with his former girlfriend, Doc (Kelly Lynch)--the only woman in town with an IQ approaching double digits, even if she had unfathomably hooked up with such a lowlife. Swayze had complained about being typecast as beefcake when this was made, but that didn't stop him from revealing as much skin as possible--even guys like him, as revealed in a luridly seedy scene in which one of Wesley's goons tells Dalton that he reminds him of the kind of boyfriend he had in prison (albeit in much saltier terms). It's so insulting to its audience that it's nice to be able to turn the tables and laugh at the filmmakers. --David Kronke

Description

Patrick Swayze stars in this sexy, "violent tough-guy thriller" (Fort Worth Star-Telegram) from the producer of Die Hard and The Matrix. Co-starring Ben Gazzara (The Thomas Crown Affair), Kelly Lynch (Charlie's Angels) and Sam Elliott (We Were Soldiers), Road House delivers no-holds-barred action that pushes the envelope for high-octane thrills! Swayze is Dalton, a legendary bouncer who comes to Jasper, Missouri, for a special purpose: to restore order at the notorious Double Deuce bar. In one spectacular fight after another, Dalton rids the bar of thugs and henchmen. But when he runs afoul of a ruthless crime boss (Gazzara) who controls the town, the stage is set for a blistering showdown that'll leave only one man standing!

4 out of 5 stars very dirty dancing.......2007-06-15

If Dirty Dancing is Patrick Swayze for the girls, then Road House is Patrick Swayze for the boys. This is what I'd like to call pure trash action. Great action thats highly entertaining, but accompanied by a ton of nudity and strong language that may not suite everyone. A strong R rating for Road House, but still ends up being a very enjoyable film, thanks to Mr. Swayze who takes out the trash.

Road House is a typicall full of action movie with a no brain story that actually makes that no brain story as interesting as can be, and placing enough action throughout to make the whole movie worth just about every minute. Pacing is wonderful, and I was totally engaged. Even watching it late at night kept me wide awake. The fights are great, and the fights are wild. I always figured there would be some crazy bar fights, but some, especially at the beginning of the film, are really crazy. Patrick Swayze did some study up on martial arts for this film, and he even has a scene practicing his katra. He gets a good fight against a guy named Jimmy, who is basically one of the bigger bad guys of the film, working under the boss. Its a hard hitting fight that goes on for a few minutes, and then has a wicked ending that I won't say.

Nothing much else to say about the film. Its a great action pleaser. For years I kept igonoring Road House thinking it was a pointless movie about pointless bar fights. Its actually better than expected. Considered a B movie all the way, I have to say its possibly the best B movie ever created.

3 out of 5 stars Schmaltz with violence.......2007-06-11

Patrick Swaze plays our hero, a combination of philosopher, tough guy, and knight errant, sort of a modern day Don Quixote. Sam Elliott makes the movie for me, he's a presence even in a B grade movie. Sam should be placed as the cowboy iamgo, he looks the part, sounds the part and as far as I'm concerned can outact "The Duke" any day of the week in a cowboy role.

This does not include what I consider to be Wayne's classic picture "The Quiet Man", in that he was superb.

Back to Road house, why Ben Gazarra played his role the way he did is beyond me, he sounds, looks and behaves like a character from an old Looney Tunes cartoon that lampoons crime characters.

I got it because I like to see the bad guys lose.

4 out of 5 stars Radhouse.......2007-03-08

Good movie and quality is excellent.
shipping and handling from amazon is very fast,it took 2 days before I had it

5 out of 5 stars Road House + RiffTrax = Comedy Gold.......2006-08-03

Road House mania has finally hit in 2006! Not only has this movie, which has been to late night TBS what Whoopi Goldberg is to Hollywood Squares, finally been reissued in a special edition, but now Mike Nelson from MST3K has released a RiffTrax for it! Road House was long acknowledged as a target that Nelson and the 'bots wished they could skewer on MST3K and he finally got his wish.

Listen, Road House is great. Tinker, Sam Elliot (voice of the beef council) and the oh so creepy owner of the Double Deuce are some of the best characters to ever populate small town Missouri. But watching it with Nelson's RiffTrax playing in the background took the unintentional (i think?) comedy of Road House to an entirely new level. Nelson is both knowledgable and funny, the kind of guy you wish your friends were as clever as. If we are ever blessed with a 20th anniversary edition of Road House, I would hope that Nelson's riffing can be included, because I can't imagine watching this movie again without it.

1 out of 5 stars Dreadful movie from the big hair 80s.......2006-07-31

A dreadful movie depicting men as macho s#$! and women as tarts. This was made in an era when people wore revolting tight stretch denims and hung out in pool halls and bars. It was also made to capitalise on the popularity of Patrick Swayze who had just appeared in the over-rated 80's teen musical "Dirty Dancing".

A very pointless movie is "Roadhouse". It does not deserve a bare bones DVD release let alone this new special edition. Is there really a market out there for rubbish like this, or am I the only one with taste in movies?

4 out of 5 stars Christmas Classic in the Making.......2007-02-20

This comedy is as gentle as a cloud, but has much more substance; mistaken identity, quirky characters, a bit of mayhem, and cute kids. This is a movie that can be enjoyed by a wide range of ages. It was great to see Native Americans portrayed in such positive and clever ways. Keep an eye out for the runaway mouse. He and the vegan chef provide some of the biggest laughts in this delightful comedy.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas In The Clouds.......2007-01-18

A fun, feel-good movie, great for watching during the Christmas season.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful feel-good Christmas diversion!.......2007-01-16

Beautiful scenery (Robert Redford's Utah property) and a charming group of Native American actors make this a "different" Christmas story for the whole family.

5 out of 5 stars All Sun Dance Awards Deserved!.......2007-01-10

Finally, a movie that isn't too much of anything--except for just completely enjoyable! What this movie isn't:

Not too serious
Not too funny
Not too sexual
Not too hard to follow
Not too many special effects
Not too long
No hidden messages
No politcal agenda

...you get the idea. If you want to sit back and watch a harmless holiday movie (not really what I would call a Christmas Classic, the holiday was more of a back drop and wasn't leaned on in any way for the story), and just be entertained without all the hub-bub then this is your movie! The charaters are so easy to understand and follow and care about and the story moves along at a perfectly steady pace. I never broke my spleen laughing but was happily amused throught the picture, which to me is a much greater feat for a movie!!! Not sure what to compare this too, it really has an original feel to it and is definitely what I would call a hidden gem as far as movies go...it was SOOOOO nice to have watched a movie and been given that warm fuzzy afterwards. Thank you to the everyone that had anything to do with the production of this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas in the Clouds.......2007-01-10

This is a special comedy romance story. You have to see it more than once to get all the humor that is in it. This movie deserves better recognition than it has gotten.

I highly recommend everyone watching this special video.

Zhang Yimou (Ju Dou) directed this fascinating, visually formal 1991 film about an educated woman (Gong Li) who is sent off to become the newest wife of a feudal nobleman in 1920s China. Nearly isolated in his spooky, palatial home, she develops relationships with several of the other wives and slowly becomes aware of a hideous legacy of punishment toward more willful women. The film has a brittle and dry quality that is deliberate, but also suggestive of Zhang working through various explorations of his own style (which he resolved in his next film, The Story of Qiu Ju). Gong Li, one of the world's great actresses, is superb. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars "When a woman strikes at the heart of another woman, she seldom misses!".......2007-07-02

My review title is from a line from DANGEROUS LIAISONS that fits this movie to a tee:Four mistresses to one man forced to scheme and plot and maneuver against one another in order to gain position and favor. When the Master is home whom will he favor with the lighting of the red lantern?

This is one powerful piece of work, and I dare say you will ever see this subject matter so elegantly and brutally honest in it's treatment. Your allegiance and understanding with each mistress will alter as this film progresses. Each mistress is shown up close and quite personal. The Master is always shot from afar. Not once do we see him closely. As the women are forced into each other's personal space constantly causing immense and intense friction, the master is always allowed to come and go and stay totally detached from all of the "warfare."

Gong Li superbly portrays Songlian, a 19 year old former University whose father has died and whose stepmother gets her "married" off and out of her hair. Songlian becomes new wife #4 to a Master Chen who has been keeping the old family traditions of centuries past alive and well. Songlian immediately faces the odd tradition of the red lantern and the other wives.

This film shows the cruelty and hate that is made possible for women subjected to such bitter contests for recognition. The point is made well:"We are like rats, cats or dogs...not humans."

From cinematography to soundtrack, acting to screenplay this is at the top as far as quality movie making. This review refers to the excellent vhs version which is crystal clear with English subtitles.

1 out of 5 stars Beautiful movie, horrible dvd quality...........2007-06-28

I can only repeat what Tony Polito wrote. I was talking with a friend and virtually quoted Tony's review (prior to reading it, that is).

The reason I bought this DVD was because I had just seen the movie on DirecTV HDTV. What a difference. This DVD is a quality disaster. Do not waste your money.

I am now looking for a HDTV source version DVD.

    5 out of 5 stars English Class.......2007-06-27

For any English teachers who teach Amy Tan's "The Joy Luck Club" this movie corresponds well with the chapter where An-Mei Hsu learns about her mother's life as the fourth concubine. Lots of parallels in the woman's situation and fascinating for the students to see China in this way.

5 out of 5 stars Raise The Red Lantern.......2007-05-28

The film that drew me into the world of arthouse/world films.
"RAISE THE RED LANTERN" will probably rank as Zhang Yimou's all time best art film. The asthetic quality of the film, the authenticity of the story context and a very powerful performance by Gong Li has made me watch this film again and again. Its a pity that Yimou moved away from this style and approach of filmmaking and got bitten by the commercial techno-simulated action stunt-driven art films that appeal to a younger and more commercial film market.

"RAISE THE RED LANTERN" will rank alongside films exploring the social period context of human life made by master directors such as Satyajit Ray, Vittorio de Sica, Truffaut and Kurosawa.

A TRIVIA: (if you didn't know already) The film was banned by the Chinese government for many many years, if its not still so.

COMMENT: A restored version of the film was shown to small audiences in film-loving cities (New York and San Francisco) recently. I hope this DVD represents the restored version of the film. The original version was distributed with very poor subtitles and an oversaturated color balance that spoiled viewing pleasure somewhat.

    5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece!.......2007-05-14

Set in the War Lord era of China, Gong Li does a phenomenal acting job. The story will haunt you for days.

1 out of 5 stars An unchanging classic.......2007-04-30

I saw this film during the single week that it remained on the bill of one of the theaters in my old neighborhood, the old Victoria. It was on the bottom half of a double bill with some western or Joan Crawford tearjerker that my parents wanted to see. I was nine years old.

In my immature judgement, it seemed to me to be the most blatant piece of pietistic claptrap and balderdash I had ever seen on any screen--and that was after being exposed to the duck-and-cover extravaganzas regularly screened at Marshall School, the elementary school that sat just one block beyond the old Victoria.

It has turned up at odd hours of the night and early morning on local television stations about once a decade since that time.

I stumbled across this DVD on the shelves of a local video rental shop. I gave it a try, just to compare my current critical stance with that of my younger self. With a few more years of life experience behind me and five or more viewings scattered across half a century, I can now say that "The Red Planet Mars" is the most blatant piece of low budget, lowbrow, low aiming, pietistic claptrap and balderdash I have ever seen on any screen.

The classics remain ever true to themselves.

5 out of 5 stars COLD WAR CHILDHOOD REVISITED.......2007-02-19

Just by chance,I caught most of"RedPlanet Mars" oncable.it was a scary experience, mostly because the portrayalof unreasoniing panic by the societies shown seemed very much the way i elieve people would act. I recall vividly howit was to be a childin the 1950's, when any car backfire or any trash-burning made people think it had happened; the Soviets were attacking, and World War 3 was beginning.

"RedPlanet Mars" accidentally or intentionally anti-Soviet propaganda, and it is effective cinema in that respect. As II watched this film,I was thinking how youngpeter Graves was in thismovie -and at about the same time his brother, James arness, was playing the alien monster in "The Thing."

Great movie, and the dvd is crisp and clear. This is a must for any Science fiction film collection.

4 out of 5 stars AKA message from Mars.......2007-01-02

The movie was made in a time when everyone was into the red scare. A nuclear family has the means and knowledge to build a device (from public domain information) to transmit to a 1952 version of Mars.

Using a new hydrogen technology Chris Cronyn (Peter Graves) sends a message to Mars. A message appears to return. The content disrupts economics and supports the concept of theocracies over democracies (Iran is a theocracy). However it is not so much the messages that catch your eye, as the 1950's stereotypes. The nuclear family is just missing the family dog. The wife (Andrea King) even thought standing beside her husband is more behind him and is scared of her own shadow. The commies are ruthless and dumb. The president (this is before we started to degrade presidents) is fair and benign. I can go on but you get the idea. Now it is amusing to watch in retrospect. But if any of these people existed today it would be scary.

Peter Graves gets to play the good guy "look to the future" father.

Marvin Miller (Arjenian) the confused bad guy (typical 50's commie) can bee seen again as Michael Anthony in the 1955 TV series "Millionaire, The"

5 out of 5 stars The Lord lives on mars.......2006-12-08

An interesting mix of scifi and religion, along the lines of "The next Voice You Hear". I saw this film recently on video. A radio transmission is received from Mars, supposedly being the voice of God. if I remember it correctly, this results in the eastern block getting religion and the overthrow of Communism. This movie is fascinating because it is a reversal of usual scifi fare, even during the 1950s. Usually, these films portray America as the country which needs talking to, and Americans being the people who need to change. This movie is very pro-American and pro-traditional Judeo/Christian values. In essence, the cold war (which was revving up in 1952) is won through the intercession of God him/herself. HEAVY DUTY STUFF, DUDE!!!

    4 out of 5 stars God Intervenes..........2006-09-02

4 out of 5 stars Emphasis on lifestyle, not job or racing.......2006-03-27

This DVD was given to me by someone who thought that, after reading my review of the wonderful film, "Breaking Away," I would like "Red Light Go," a documentary on the bicycle messengers of New York City and the "alleycat" races they run. "Red Light Go" turned out to be a documentary on a topic that is of little interest to me, but I will review it and stick to commenting on its quality.

The documentary introduces a set of alleycat racers, and then rotates through interviews with them, as they comment on their lives, how they got into their current lifestyle, what they think of each other, a little about the bicycle messenger job, and a lot about the "alleycat" races. These races are semi-structured, grueling, urban bicycle races, arranged by some of the participants.

As to the quality of the DVD, first of all, the cinematography is great. The viewer feels like he or she is right there with these alleycat racers, during the races, during their "day jobs" as messengers, and during their social gatherings.

Secondly, the title and the cover image give a very accurate impression of what the documentary is about. At first, I was expecting it to be about bicycle messengers in general. Through the different interviews, it becomes clear to me that the "alleycat racers" are a subset of bicycle messengers, who have developed their own subculture or counter-culture. What sets them apart are some of the same factors that set apart the participants in any "extreme" variation of any sport: pushing the limits, taking risks, and enjoying the thrill of the danger involved. Many of them also dress in ways that clearly identify them as extreme, non-conformist, and counter-culturists.

Thirdly, there is a fair amount of profanity mixed into the interviews, as well as quite a few references to substance abuse. One of the "alleycat" races even involves the participants carrying bags of items that look like illegal drugs, adding the possibility that the police might stop them and they would run the risk of having to explain their way out of drug charges. That is just considered as one more obstacle in the race.

Fourthly, this documentary is much more about the alleycat racers than about the alleycat races. The big Halloween race, following a pentagram-in-a-circle-shaped route through rush-hour traffic in New York City, is shown in pretty good detail, although the traffic and the twindling daylight make it hard to follow the action. Otherwise, the documentary is mainly about the racers and their lives.

Fifthly, even at my height of bicycling involvement, I would not have wanted to be involved in these alleycat races, as the documentary makes two things clear: there is little regard for the safety of the pedestrians and automobile drivers; winning the races has as much to do with being loud and pushy at the checkpoints, as it does with being fast. I loved to ride because I loved the speed and the accomplishment involved in going new places and exploring.

If you are looking for a DVD about bicycle racing, check out "Breaking Away." If you want to learn about what it would be like to be a bicycle messenger in a big city, look elsewhere. But, if you want to find out about the counter-culture that exists among the bicycle messengers who are also alleycat racers, "Red Light Go" is exactly what you're looking for. I learned a lot about this group and the counter-culture they have developed, and the documentary is well-done technically.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and well executed documentary!.......2005-11-08

This documentary is a good example of how to assemble a documentary professionally, and use editing to bring the narrative to a thrilling and entertaiing finish. Errol Morris is be the master documentary maker of our time, but anyone who makes them has to figure out a way to bring the narrative to a close, rahter than leave it hanging. This is the most entertaining documentary I've seen this year. It focuses on bike messengers in NYC and the allycat races they put on throughout each year. It is a detailed look into their culture, and gives them a face and identity. Messengers take risks and sometimes have injured pedestrians. This documentary does not try to apologize for that. It is a chance for the messengers to tell their stories and express themselves, and tell the audience how they want to be accepted and appreciated. I actually see them in a whole new light thanks to this DVD. And the final act explaining the annual Haloween race, and the legendary messenger/daredevil Evil E, is thrilling and provides the perfect finale for this film. Shot and edited over 3 years, Red Light Go is a worthy addition to any documentary collection. It is unrated, but does contain mild profanity. But teenagers and adults alike who are either into extreme sports or curious about the lives of messengers should see this.

5 out of 5 stars Courier Rat Races.......2005-09-20

Red Light Go! is the engaging tale of cycle couriers in New York and how they organise alley cat races. Alley cat races are cycle races across an urban environment. It focuses on the riders rather than the action and is all the better for it.

One of the best documentaries I've seen in years, well made and with a real empathy for its subject.

It did make me want to buy a fixie (fixed wheel bike) so beware

5 out of 5 stars Exceedinly well done independant documentary..........2005-06-07

Big cities have a vibe. Sometimes the vibe is the people and sometimes it's the inanimate feeling of its buildings, streets and parks. NYC is both. Red Light Go captures a microcosm of NYC by profiling the people who move envelopes and packages from one side of the city to the other on a bicycle. Bicycle messengers have a mystique unlike any other. They are admired by some and reviled by others. Red Light Go captures this beautifully. In up close and personal interviews with several messengers we learn what makes them tick and how they feel about the challenges they face day to day. It also captures their love of a transportation option for many of us: the bicycle. Yac, Mike Dee, Amy and Squid live their life exactly the way they want, in their city and on their terms. Even if you aren't a bicycle fanatic you will like this movie. Picture a bicycle race on the streets of NYC at evening rush hour with messengers having to ride back and forth across the city six times competing to be first on streets filled with traffic. This is one of several messenger races captured in Red Light Go. It also captures the simplicity of what many of us do five days a week. Work. This independent documentary shares the spirit of NYC and some of the unique people who give it life. Well done with crisp editing. Who needs special effects. Just watch a messenger ride between a transit bus and taxi with inches to spare. I've watched this several times already and have shared with many others. It's that good.

4 out of 5 stars Unjustly neglected noir classic.......2006-03-29

I do not understand why this movie is so little known .The names -in front of and behind the camera-have pedigree ,and the story ,while derivative ,is always engrossing

Edward G Robinson plays " Morgan " a farmer living with his sister (the ever admirable Judith Anderson)on a farm on the edge of some deep dark woods ,with his adopted daughter the sweet natured Meg .A teenage boy hires to work on the farm after school ignores Morgan's advice and returns home after work via a short cut through the woods .He is oppressed by as ense of dread and terror and panics .Being a resolute youth he resolves to try to get to the cause of his anxiety and together with Meg begins to dig into the mystery of waht the woods conceal .The key lies in some dark deed of Morgan's past ,a thing he is anxious to keep hidden ,and pivotal to events is the eponymous house hiddden deep in the forest

There is a sub plot involving the affair between the local minx ,the sultry Julie London and a sinister youth played by a sneering Rory Calhoun

Robinson is excellent giving a finely judges performance as an essentially decent man who is concealing a shameful secret ,his air of geniality giving way to outburst of anger and rage .Anderson is perfect as his sister -watching his gradual disintegration ,trying to be supportive but aware of the need to protect potential victims of his anger
The score by Miklos Rozsa is a star in its own right -it is discorant ,relying heavily on shrieking strings -and evoking a sense of dread with masterly economy while Delmer Daves directs with efficiency and not a liitle style
Good psychological drama and well worth seeking out and rescuing from obscurity

Quality of film could have been better, but it was the 40s!
Not only is this a good psycho/mystery, it is a tender story of adolescence. There is a touching bond between Pete and Meg, and Meg and Nath. Meg blossoms into a beautiful young lady as she steals your heart.

Interesting plot, excellent actors, so why is it obscure? Because of the editing. This film goes on forever. Cut thirty minutes and it might have been better known.

5 out of 5 stars An impressive, neglected classic of psychological suspense.......2005-05-14

Ah, the golden age of Hollywood, when films actually relied on strong stories to build suspense and keep audiences riveted to the screen. I had never really heard of The Red House (1947) until recently, but this is one heck of a good film. It sometimes gets associated with film noir, but I would describe it as more of a psychological thriller. It features a strong cast, including the likes of Edward G. Robinson, Judith Anderson, and Rory Calhoun (as well as a wonderful young actress named Allene Roberts), a wonderful musical score by Miklos Rozsa, and a plot that methodically works itself out to great effect.

Young Meg (Roberts) lives on a quiet country farm with Pete Morgan (Robinson) and his sister Ellen (Anderson), having been taken in by the Morgans as a two-year-old following the death of her parents. Everything is calm and peaceful until Meg talks Pete into hiring some extra help in the form of young Nath Storm (Lon McCallister). When Nath says he is taking a shortcut through the woods, Pete goes off half-cocked and starts ranting about the woods being haunted, screams in the night, and the evils of a red house. Nath soon comes running back to the farm, but he is determined to figure out the secret of those woods. Meg also wants to know why she has always been forbidden to enter the woods, and the two of them sneak off several times to go exploring. Pete becomes more unsettled as the movie progresses, as dark memories begin to bubble to the surface of his mind, and the viewer is eventually forced to question his motives. There is plenty of drama and suspense (and a touch of young love) before the dark secrets of The Red House are revealed, all of which contribute to the film's remarkably dark and somewhat eerie atmosphere and a surprisingly effective conclusion. To my mind, Robinson tends to overplay his part at times, but Allene Roberts comes into her own and plays opposite his character extremely well.

Some viewers found some of the scenes in the dark woods to be scary, but modern audiences will almost surely find nothing the least bit scary about this film. Suspense, though, still abides here in droves, helped along quite effectively by an orchestral score featuring the theremin (which was used predominantly in early science fiction films). Younger viewers might sometimes grow a little impatient with the slow and steady nature of the plot, but it is the strength of that plot that makes The Red House a somewhat overlooked classic.

4 out of 5 stars A Film Not To Be Overlooked!!!.......2005-04-17

Deemed as one of Martin Scorsese's most influential films, "The Red House" is a cinematic treasure. "The Red House" is classic film-noir, using extreme shadows and camera angles to advance the plot line. The film is set in a small peaceful, rural, community in the 1940's. Pete Morgan and his sister, Ellen Morgan, have adopted Meg, now a young teenage woman, whose parents had died shortly after her birth. As the story develops doubt arises over Meg's past and the secrets of the mysterious Ox Head Woods located on the Morgan farm. As the intrigue into the past continues, Pete slips between sanity and insanity, between the present and the past. While Ellen attempts to ground Pete, Meg begins to unravel secrets of her own past. The plot is edgy and suspenseful. The music seamlessly fits into the film with brilliant composition. Edward G. Robinson, who plays Pete Morgan, gives an over the top performance that works for this film. He is haunted by his past and reminded daily with the haunting figure before him - Jeanie. "The Red House" is one of my favorite films and is a film which should not be overlooked. Plot line: A Acting: A- Cinematography: A+ Music: A Overall: A

El Rey tells the story of Pedro Rey, the mythical father of the Colombian cocaine trade. A riveting drama based on true events, the film tracks Rey's evolution from opportunistic businessman to megalomaniacal drug lord. Recruiting a small-time crook as his supplier, a Peace Corps worker as his North American distributor, and a Marxist revolutionary as his chemist, Rey turns the modest Colombian coke trade into a multinational corporation. The King then sets about protecting his empire by adding a cop and a politician to his team, as well as the buying the loyalty of the local peasants. But in Rey's world, loyalty is a one-way street, and when the King turns his back on any of his subjects, he'd better hope that one of them doesn't put a bullet in it.

        4 out of 5 stars Remastered??.......2007-06-14

I received this dvd and was very excited to view the red house...excellent movie with twists and turns and a very exciting ending...the only flaw i wish it was remastered... mind you it was much better than the vhs version but this one is a keeper especially if they decide to remaster it... On the other hand the scarlet street which they say was remastered surely wasn't.... the print was terrible and very dark and many film scratches throughout... excellent film noir just wish it was better done.If your an edward g robinson fan pick up these movies just not this double feature....i saw that another company has scarlet street remastered so i would advise you to try that one instead... it's worth the chance.
