Description
Based on a harrowing true story... A weekend cruise aboard a luxury yacht goes horribly awry for a group of old high school friends who forget to lower the ladder before they jump into the ocean for a swim. The boat proves impossible to climb, leaving them adrift, miles from shore. As the reality of the situation sinks in, the friends begin to turn on each other. Soon the exhaustion of keeping afloat and the struggle to get back on board begin to take a terrible toll. What started as a joyful reunion becomes a fight for survival!
Customer Reviews:
Dumb drunks trapped overboard is mildly entertaining.......2007-06-25
Open Water II, based on "real events" follows the dim witted tragedy of a group of partying 30-somethings who, drunk, leap overboard on their yacht for a swim, only to realize they did not let down the ladder and have no way to climb back on board. The scenario is made more tragic because a baby is left alone onboard. The film begins by trying too hard to make the characters and their friendship seem "real". The character development is forced and made more annoying by showing the characters through the lens of a "home-movie". Luckily all but the most well known of the cast, Eric Dane of Grey's Anatomy, actually do a really good acting job. You will laugh out loud at the insincerity of his over the top confessional scene towards the end of the movie. The movie gets better and entertaining once the group of friends find themselves overboard. Panic sets in, and one by one the friends (predictably) die. Suspense is sustained by the sheer awfulness of the situation. The final act of bravery of one of the two survivors is really unrealistic and the ending leaves you wondering if they really did survive. This is a mildly entertaining romp for anyone who enjoys the "survival" genre or the scare of contemplating being lost at sea.
Open Water / Closed Minded 2.......2007-06-02
This has got to be one of the most frustrating movies ever to watch. It goes to show that when people are in a life and death situation that 9 out of 10 people will panic, lose faith in each other, and die. I watched it with my wife and we spent most of the movie speaking out loud and asking why won't they do this or that.
The ending was really bad and leaves you with a blank feeling.
The only reason I gave it two stars is because of the suspense the movie gives you. I, however, would rent it if I were you before deciding whether or not to purchase.
A surprisingly intense and gripping film that more than exceeded my expectations.......2007-05-27
After reading the premise of this movie, I just had to see it. Six friends jump off a yacht to take a swim in the ocean, only to realize that they are royally screwed because nobody thought to let the ladder down. In other words, they've jumped in and they can't get up. As one of the characters actually says, the circumstances would be funny if they weren't so serious. Honestly, I expected this to be some kind of B-movie I could laugh at. Instead, it's a polished production, and there's nothing funny about it. You won't be traumatized by any means, but this is one deadly serious film that almost forces you to imagine yourself in the same situation. For me, it was like having claustrophobia out in the middle of the ocean - a weird concept, of course, but that's how it made me feel. I'm really surprised that the film gets so many lukewarm and negative reviews. I found it intense, and I was delighted that things didn't play out the way I expected. The director threw us a curveball at the end, with a pretty ambiguous ending, but after a little thought I can't even criticize that decision, as I believe it ties in with the real story that inspired the film.
A group of old friends get together for a weekend on the high seas, and it looks like a good time will be had by all on board Dan's (Eric Dane) luxurious yacht. (Of course, to really enjoy the cruise, you sort of need to be on the yacht most of the time - aye, that's the rub.) Three guys, three gals, and a baby whose mother has a major water phobia make up the passenger manifest. Some viewers don't seem to like some of these characters, but we really don't get to know any of them intimately before the real drama begins. They're basically just normal people, and that helps put you into the "what would I do in their situation?" mindset.
Let's just look at some of the things we can learn from this movie. 1) If a childhood tragedy has given you a major water phobia, you might want to just pass on the private yacht vacation thing, especially if you have a baby to take care of. 2) Out of every six people, at least one of them is the kind of jerk who will try to cure a friend's fear of the water by picking her up and jumping into the ocean with her. 3) This one's really important - don't forget to let the ladder down before you and everyone else on board go for a swim in the ocean because you cannot get back up on the yacht without said ladder. 4) In this kind of dangerous situation, don't fight over the very sharp knife. 5) When "nuding up" to make a rope out of your clothes, let the lightest person - not the biggest guy - try to climb up the "rope" first. 6) When desperately trying to get back to the surface after a dive, watch your freakin' head. 7) When facing such a "what a stupid way to die" situation such as this, you learn a whole lot about your friends.
Open Water 2: Adrift (which is its own film and not a true sequel to Open Water) turned out to be really intense. Desperation comes quickly and only grows as the whole situation worsens. A full 2/3 of this film takes place in the ocean itself. I know you're probably expecting a shark attack to come along at some point - I know I was - but don't be disappointed by the complete absence of deadly oceanic predators in this film. I think a shark attack would have actually hurt the story, as it would have taken something away from the intensely personal tragedy these poor people have to face. With no outside threat to unite against, these characters quickly turn against one another, making their situation even direr in the process. Then you have the sounds of the baby crying every now and again, adding even more to the angst the characters are feeling and emoting, especially the child's mother Amy (Susan May Pratt). Some viewers are going to quibble and go into a "they should have done this or that" kind of mania as they watch the film, but I found it really quite realistic in terms of the situation.
My first reaction to the film's ending was less than enthusiastic - it's one of those "please don't end it like this --- aaaarrgghhh" types of ending. After reading one of the director's comments and taking a few moments to reflect on it, however, I find myself having no problem whatsoever with the ambiguity of that final minute. Not surprisingly, I think this is a great, underrated movie; it certainly exceeded my somewhat low expectations by leaps and bounds.
Good Film, but some thoughts..........2007-05-21
At the moment I'm too lazy too review the whole movie myself. Anyways, I basically agree with what everyone else has been saying. I mean, if you have a rope made of something as flimsy as wet swimsuits, you narrow it down to the two women, and ask them who weighs the LEAST. Then you put your friggin hand under one of their feet as they climb and HELP THEM make it up there!!! God that frustrated me. NO wonder the friggin thing tore. And the supposed captain/owner of the yacht guy. Yeah, he shouldn't be acting. I watched 'The Making of Adrift' and he's just as cocky and egotistical in real life as his character! However, I disagree with everyone who says it was so "stupid" of them to forget to drop the ladder. I think that's merely a careless, very easy-to-make mistake. I mean, your're partying on a boat, and someone jumps in and everyone follows. I can see myself forgetting to think ahead and put the ladder out before I take a swim. It doesn't mean I'm retarted.
Negative thoughts aside, My God, intense film, with excellent* acting from Susan May Pratt. Aside from the parts where you want to shout "You dumbasses!" and "Oh, c'mon." I found it to be a very believeable and realistic storyline. The baby on the ship had to be the most cringe-inducing aspect.
As for the comment made about the first Open Water, and how they never made it clear how they were left behind. Let me explain- You have to watch the scene carefully.. but you'll notice that the man on the boat in charge of the headcounts is basically an idiot. He scribbles down on a pad the number of people who are out scuba-diving, and forgets to add that hyper/weird guy who decides to jump in at the last minute. So already the count is off, and, thinking they have everyone back on the boat, and not being able to see the couple left behind since they're way under the surface, the boat takes off.
Oh yeah, I HATED the ending. Pick one or the other!! Or at least make it clear which actually happened. It seems like the whole movie built to that point, and the director lets us down with that fuzzy, surreal ending that never satisfies our need to know if they and the baby survived!!
Maybe as Good as the Original.......2007-05-20
I rented this DVD half-expecting a cheap knockoff of the original, and was pleasantly surprised to find a nail-biter of a suspense film with a high quality of acting and production.
A group of twentysomething high school friends gather for a yaghting trip in celebration of one of their birthdays. Things go horribly wrong when, in their beered-up revelry, they all decide to jump ship and go for a swim. Panic ensues when they realize no one dropped the ladder and they have no way of getting back on the boat.
There are some stunning moments of suspense as the characters try to figure a way out of their situation. One scene in which a character delves deep into the water and knocks his head on the ship following a frantic rise to the surface will cause any viewer to cry out in vicarious pain.
The movie's star turn undoubtedly belongs to Susan May Pratt, who completely owns the screen every time she appears. Her turn as a suffering mother who entered the water involuntarily is easily the most sympathetic performance.
Some reviewers have complained that there's no character development to be found in this film. Actually, we learn quite a bit about the supposed "owner" of the yaght. His confession about his professional life is straight out of "Death of a Salesman."
This movie is not a sequel to the original "Open Water," which may be a superior film. Rather, it's basically a movie with the same premise. Here, at least, it's easy to understand how the characters became stranded - In the first movie, it's all but impossible to figure out how the characters got left off the ship.
The biggest weak point here is the ending...or "endings," as the film seems to sport two distinctly different conclusions. Either way, though, this is a good entertainment and deserves viewing from anyone intrigued by the idea of a group of people being literally lost at sea.

The Ultrafit Multisport Training Series
Athletes in every sport except running devote enormous attention to perfecting even minute details of the movements they will be required to produce in competition. Running coaches just tell their athletes to run longer and harder. Runners, and their coaches, have basically ignored technique for years, assuming that their natural stride will give them efficiency and injury resistance. We have found that this simply is not the case.
For the past decade, African runners have dominated distance running at its highest levels. Research on what makes these runners faster consistently demonstrates normal VO2 Max and lactate threshold levels for elite runners. Their height, weight, and limb-length ratios all fall into the normal category. Clearly and consistently, what sets the great African runners apart is that they are more efficient than their competitors, running faster without expending more energy. Experts in running economy agree that running barefoot through childhood contributes significantly to the extraordinary economy of these athletes. We're not suggesting that you run barefoot. We are suggesting that you take the time and effort to learn the techniques that may be more natural running barefoot, and implement them into your shoe-running technique.

A military member "must have".......2007-05-15
16 years in the Defense industry (to include Marine Infantry) and this is the first time I fully realize how wrong my form has been. The military grades people on physical fitness and members are expected to take a test twice a year. Needless to say, there is A LOT of running through out the year. NOT ONCE did I ever see a video or recieve instruction on the correct way to run. We are just given "go fasters" (running shoes), told to put them on and to "GO FASTER!".
After countless trips to the chiropracter and icing and heating and treating...I bought this video. It is AWESOME. I highly HIGHLY recommend it to others. I just wish I would have known this stuff 16 years ago.
Now I do run faster with no injuries!.......2007-02-05
When I read some reviews, I thought about purchsing this DVD. I bought the DVD for myself as Christmas present. It was the one of the best Christmas presents ever! Why didn't I buy this DVD sooner? ! After I have forcused on my running form and have practiced the drills for just one month, I shorten my time 40 seconds per mile and I run 2 minutes faster per 5K--which was almost 10% better than my average time record. And now I do run faster with injury free. I am really glad I learned about this DVD and would like to recommend for many other runners.
Just what I was looking for........2006-12-14
I'm just an average runner, and I'm ok with that. I will never experience what a 5 or even 6 minute mile will feel like. That's not a good or bad thing, it's just reality.
When I decided to study running form, I knew that I didn't want something too complex or too involved. I simply wanted an overview of running form with simple recommendations on becoming more efficient and avoiding injuries.
Evolution Running is the DVD I decided on, and it gave me exactly the kind of information I was looking for. I picked up some great tips on things like: stride length, vertical movement, uphill and downhill running, tempo, etc.
There is no DVD that will make one a champion runner overnight, but Evolution Running will give anyone some great concepts to ponder. The information I reveived from this DVD will certainly be put to good use and I'm really glad I chose it.
Top Marks.......2006-12-13
I bought this video in hopes of finding some tips on running with less knee pain, and I'm glad I chose this one. I do triathlon's in the Clydesdale division and I've had knee pain from running workouts. After watching the video I ran 18 miles in three days with zero knee pain. I'm very happy with the purchase and recommend it for anyone who's looking for tips on reducing injury.
Fantastic Guide - Best Bang for the Buck on Running Technique.......2006-10-25
Ken does a really great job of breaking down the basics; strike point, leg position, cadence, efficiency all in a simple format. The graphics used in the production leave a little bit to be desired but they convey the main points to support his philosophies on technique. The way he has broken down the efficiencies is easy to understand and when illustrated with some top national champion triathletes it becomes very obvious what the proper running technique looks like.
I have shaved minutes off my 5k times and now running with much less (none) pain.
I have recommended this to pretty much everyone I run with... especially those that show poor form.
If you want to gain more speed through efficiency and run with less pain drop the $30!

Chilling.......2007-07-03
This movie is so quiet. There is so little overt action and yet there is more to frighten and make you sad than any movie I can remember. The circumstances around which the couple is left at sea are horrifying in how they unfold. Didn't anyone miss them? I guess not. No one knew them so no one knew they were not on board on the return trip. But the real fear and sadness is when they're alone. And the fear of the sharks, while vivid, wasn't even the scariest thing. The worst thing was knowing they knew no one was coming back for them. They could do nothing to save themselves. I was hypnotized by this movie. Brilliant.
I'd like to see you make a better movie............2007-07-03
This film was made on a shoestring budget by a husband and wife team using DVCAM. They shot this indie film on the weekends when they could scheduled around their regular careers! The plot is extremely interesting and is based on true events (Cases of divers being accidentally left behind and lost at sea. Is that not a frightening predicament?). In my opinion, the purpose of a good movie is to put you into the situation at hand. It should make you think, "what would I do?" or "how would I feel?" and draw upon your emotions. This film achieves that in a low budget, simplistic manner. It is realistic, and honest as to how a real couple may have acted in that scenario. The scathing reviewers that hated this film should stick to their Michael Bay blockbusters. You are probably the same crowd that voted for Bush.
Taken for what it is, not bad........2007-06-16
Some reviewers hate this movie and others love it. I'm squarely in the middle. A classic? Of course not. A pretty good story, decently told? I think so. And at 80 minutes, it's the right length.
If I had one criticism, it would be this: While we know this was loosely based on the Lonergan incident, and there might have been other occurences of this type in real life, there is NO WAY it could have happened as portrayed in this movie. Why not? Because the absence of Blanchard Ryan on the return trip would have been noticed by pretty much every male on the boat who would have spent the outbound trip staring at her!
"Hey -- where's that blonde with the smile and the cleavage?" :)
bad movie.......2007-06-06
I taped and watched this movie because I used to dive and thought it might be interesting. It's not.Bad filming, bad acting and a boring movie.Even the bedroom scene is lame. They talked about getting married while walking the beach but back it the bedroom she won't make love because she's too stressed . With your fiance on the first night of your vacation and you're too stressed and shut him off.?? Don't waste your time.
Possibly the worst movie I have ever seen.......2007-06-04
First off the one star I gave is being overly generous. This movie was the most boring, unscary, uninteresting waste of time. I saw it on FX right now and I was excited to see it at first because the trailer always made it seem interesting. I thought it was going to be a mix of Blair Witch project and Jaws. To compare those two amazing movies to this flaming piece of trash would be an injustice. I dont mind low budget movies as long as they are interesting but this thing was awful. There are zero scares and zero laughs. The whole movie I kept waiting for something good to happen and before I knew it, the movie was over and I had lost 2 hours I will never get back. Worst of all whoever does the star ratings for movies shown by Time Warner should be fired for giving this movie 3 stars. Please listen to me when I say don't even waste your time watching this movie on TV. I hope the guy that made this movie never worked in Hollywood again after this garbage.

Shot on digital video with a pair of unknown actors (Blanchard Ryan and Daniel Travis) who tread water for most of the film's brisk 79-minute running time, Open Water is a fact-based exercise in primal fear that will scare the socks off anyone who dreads death from the deep, but it's familiar stuff if you've ever watched "Shark Week" on the Discovery Channel (which is mentioned in writer-director Chris Kentis's economical screenplay). If you can't accept that a trendy young couple could be accidentally abandoned during an open-sea diving excursion (but hey, it really happened!), then you'll surely be hooked by the intense what's-gonna-happen anxiety that escalates when the horrified vacationers realize they've got unwanted company. It's too easy to call Open Water a poor man's Jaws, and the movie's too realistically frightening to be compared to the popcorn thrills of Deep Blue Sea, so what you've got here is a shark movie that creates its own little low-budget niche. Before placing his actors in actual proximity to sharks, Kentis betrays them with some silly, bickering dialogue, but with adequate realism in its favor, Open Water offers a perfect excuse to stay on the beach. --Jeff Shannon

Sharks Everywhere.......2007-05-28
The movies runs a little slow, but I actually enjoyed it. I had to watch it a couple of times before I did though. I did find the ending a little scary and sad.
Very well done.......2007-03-22
Anyone who has ever been in the ocean can appreciate this movie. If you just actually imagine this happening to you, it is terrifying. I'm not surprised by some of the negative reviews, because most of them are people who need monsters jumping out of closets to be scared. This is a psychologically frightening movie that doesn't need constant special effects to get it's point across. All of the emotions that the couple goes through seem so realistic to me. Just imagine being in a dark ocean miles away from land and being bumped by something underneath. If that doesn't scare you then you've never been swimming.
I put it at the top of the scale.......2006-12-08
There are over a hundred reviews of this movie on this sight and most are either one star or five stars. This is probably a pretty accurate way to describe this movie. If you are looking for blood and gore and horror, this probably isn't your kind of movie. If you are looking for tension and just an overall feeling of uneasiness, you will enjoy this. I gave it 5 stars because this film left an impact. Just before Blanchard Ryan performed the final act of desperation, I said "you know what I would do..." Then she did it. This movie could give you nightmares. This is a great example of a low budget movie being done well. The actors did a wonderful job. I own this one and it still gives me chills after numerous viewings.
NOT FOR THE "SHALLOW".......2006-08-22
I was not surprised at the poor reviews by "shallow" viewers, who missed the whole crux of this movie. This was not meant to be a Hollywood "hype type" movie. It is based on actual events that came upon a very unfortunate couple who were literally abandoned by an incompetent crew of a licensed charter boat. Although no one can truly know what transpired verbally, psychologically or physically to this couple, as they were never found, I believe that the portrayal of what happened in this movie is ingenius. The myriad of emotions that must have been present as they first, were in disbelief that they could have been left behind, then the hope that surely the boat would come back for them, followed by sheer terror as the hours passed by and dehydration set in, almost certainly being bitten by jellyfish, harrassed by sharks, etc. Whatever really happened to them is immaterial to the content of this movie. All I have to do is imagine how I would have felt if that were me and my husband. Can you imagine true and real terror? How about clear and present danger? If you want fiction, get your JAWS movies back out and take a look at the "real" FAKE shark they used. You call that scary??? This tragedy happened to a real couple and I don't believe this movie was meant to be entertaining, but a true documentation of probable possibilities of what horror that man and woman endured before they were lost at sea, never to be found. Give it some thought, people...
Under no circumstances should you watch this movie.......2006-08-14
Many reviews involve a plot synopsis of the movie. I will give you something of an unorthodox one. Rather than tell you the movie's premise, I will tell you what you can expect out of the movie.
Two badly-acted people bobbing in the ocean for an hour and a half. Nothing happens. Occasionally there are sharks.
There is nothing scary, nothing tense, nothing worth watching. it's jsut watching two very badly acted people bob in the water. it is possibly the most boring film you will ever see, as a grand total of nothing happens in the course of the movie.
Avoid at all costs.

A Shark for All Seasons.......2007-05-18
I see by the other reviews that the vicious Internet movie critics are at it again. The Internet can be a great forum for people to air their views, unfortunately it has also become a place where people lash out with hateful barbs at a product that hasn't met their expectations for whatever reason.
First of all, I would love to know the ages of the reviewers who attacked the quality of this movie. I realize that many people aren't aware or have forgotten that movies weren't always digitally remastered with Dolby Digital Surround Sound with a picture quality that was clean as a whistle. Let me take you back to a time long ago, in a galaxy far far away. Having grown up in the 1970s, I watched many of these made for TV movies when they originally aired on the old [...] tube (no HDTV, plasma, or flat screen, no surround sound). Let me tell you, the prints that the TV stations used were sometimes beat to crap. The color would be faded, there would be all sorts of lines, hairs, and who knows what else on that print. There would also be times when the print would break and the station would put on the always dreaded "we are experiencing technical difficulties, please stand by" message on the screen. Of course, this would always happen at the climax of a film and by the time the movie came on again, the best part was already over and done with. Of course, it was annoying back then, but now I look back to those times with fond memories.
What is the point of this trip down memory lane you ask? Let's face it, Shark Kill is not the most glorious moment in film history. It's a cheesy 1970s made for TV movie that was rushed out to capitalize on the success of Jaws. It did not have great acting, cinematography, directing, or anything else for that matter. The prints used to show on the TV stations were low quality. Why anyone would think that a major studio would spend a ton of money remastering this movie to give it a super deluxe release with high tech picture quality and sound, is beyond me. I doubt that a decent print even exists of this film. No one else but a small company with a love for old cheesy movies would even bother putting out a movie like this one. If you really want this movie to get a high end release, call up Sony, Paramount, or Warner and see what they say. Just be ready to hear their laughter.
Now if this film is so bad, why even bother buying it you ask? Simple, for the cheesy 1970s appeal. It has the dreadful clothing and hairstyles, the bad acting, ugly furniture, and the "scary" monster. The picture quality isn't bad, it has the same look as the prints that were shown back in the 70s. If you are looking to see a super high tech masterpiece with superior sound, you are better off buying some George Lucas film that has been tweaked 40 billion times over. But if you want some cheesy fun, then Shark Kill is the film for you. So get out the fondue, the bear rug, Schlitz beer, and the crochet owl and put on the film!
Terrible Picture .......2007-04-24
I have always wanted to see this movie. But I was really mad at the qulity of the the picture. It was the worst picture ever release to dvd. I had to get a refund because it was unwatchable. I agreed with the other review. Wild Eye Releasing should fix this problem because people who want to see rare tv movies should have the chance.
OH MY GOD!!!.......2007-04-17
HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE TRANSFER. STILL CANNOT EVEN BRING MYSELF TO VIEW THE FILM AFTER WITNESSING THE FIRST FEW MINUTES. I COULD NOT BELEIVE THE QUALITY....I ACTUALLY THOUGHT IT WAS A JOKE UNTIL I FLIPPED THOUGH ALL THE TRACKS. I HAVE NEVER SEEN A WORSE TRANSFER. I AM A STICKLER FOR WIDESCREEN/DECENT TRANSFERS. I AM EVEN WILLING TO VIEW VHS TRANSFERS ON DVD IF THE TITLE IS NOT AVAILABLE ANY OTHER WAY. I REALIZE THAT IT IS A RARE TV MOVIE, I CAN UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS FULL SCREEN, BUT THE QUALITY OF THIS TRANSFER IS ABSURD. IT LOOKS LIKE IT WAS RECORDED OFF AN ILLGAL CABLE BOX (NO ACTUAL ACCUSATION INTENDED, BUT SERIOUSLY, COME ON!!!! BARELY WATCHABLE)I WAS REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS COMPANY (WILD EYE) AS THEY WERE ATTEMPTING TO BRING RARE TV HORROR FILMS TO DVD, BUT AFTER THIS ATROCITY, I DON'T THINK I CAN BRING MYSELF TO BUY ANOTHER (I ALSO BOUGHT MANEATERS ARE LOOSE BY THE SAME COMPANY, BUT HAVE NOT YET HAD THE CHANCE TO CHECK OUT THE QUALITY...AFTER FLIPPING THOUGH THE TRACKS ON THIS ONE I AM SCARED TO EVEN TRY). I CANNOT JUDGE THE FILM ITSELF AS I HAVE NOT YET SEEN IT. MAYBE ONE DAY I WILL BE DRUNK AND BORED ENOUGH TO VIEW IT AND BE ABLE TO JUDGE THE FILM ON ITS OWN MERITS, BUT UP UNTIL NOW, I HAVE TO LEAVE THIS MARK. SORRY WILD EYE, BUT YOU DESERVE THIS....HAVE I MADE MYSELF CLEAR?

Comprehensive and scientific.......2005-10-26
This multiple DVD set was just what I was waiting for. Rather than just a pep talk and a few tricks, this DVD set is made for the serious triathlete. The DVDs really got into the nitty-gritty about how the body performs under stressful situations- and further, how to exploit what our bodies can do in order to reach higher levels of performance. I feel that I can really strive for the next plateau...two thumbs way up.
Triathlon Theory and Practise DVD.......2005-10-16
I found it to be a fairly good DVD.

LOVED IT!
Excellent view into the mindset of elite Triathletes.......2005-12-09
An excellent view of the world of elite Triathletes and great background for the 2000 Olympic debut of Triathlon. The focus of the documentary is mainly Wes Hobson in his build up for the 2000 USA Olympic Triathlon Trials. Much of the rest of the DVD covers Olympic hopefuls who train at the USA Olympic Training Center. There are plenty of one on one interviews where you get to see the quirky side of the athletes. On the negative side I felt that the editing put a "whiney" spin on Wes.
The video spans about a 4 month period in 2000, interviewing the athletes on their home training grounds as well as at different international races throughout the season. No significant coverage of the races unfortunately. I enjoyed the video but can no longer watch it after having seen it about 50 times while riding my indoor trainer.

Open Water PSP UMD Movie MODEL- 17911 VENDOR- UMD MOVIE FEATURES- Open Water PSP Movie Independent filmmaker Chris Kentis directs the dramatic thriller Open Water, based on a true story. Susan (Blanchard Ryan) and Daniel (Daniel Travis) are a busy married couple on an island vacation. They board a vessel called the Reef Explorer with a group of other scuba divers, traveling 15 miles out to sea. Since they are certified to dive in open waters, the couple breaks off from the group to go exploring. The Reef Explorer accidentally leaves without a proper head count, leaving them stranded in shark- infested waters. Kentis and producer wife Laura Lau did all the filming themselves in the actual ocean without extraneous special effects, while the actors wore special steel-mesh under their wetsuits in the scenes where actual sharks were involved. Open Water was shown at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004 as part of the American Spectrum competition. -- SPECIFICATIONs ----------------------------------- MPAA Rating : R Genre : Natural Horror Theatrical Date : 2003 Run Time : 81 minutes Distributor/Studio: Lions Gate sonystyle.com
Customer Reviews:
Susan and Daniel get left behind in the big blue ocean.......2005-05-31
The obvious comparison just about everybody seems to be making with "Open Water" is to "Jaws," but I think that misses the point. Yes, they both have sharks in them, but "Open Water" has more and they are more realistic than Bruce, but I think the cinematic reference point for Chris Kentis' film is "The Blair Witch Project." This is not just because it is filmed with a digital video camera rather than a 35mm camera but because it is the same sort of stripped down filmmaking. For most of "Open Water" we are looking at a couple in the middle of the ocean. Usually we look at them from above, sometimes from below, and sometimes we get point of view shots or looks at what is lurking beneath the waves. But most of this movie is about those two people floating in the ocean.
The two people are Susan (Blanchard Ryan) and Daniel (Daniel Travis); the "Blair Witch Project" analogy gets even stronger here because Blanchard is Ryan's middle name and her first name is Susan, but then we eventually learn the last name of the characters is Kitner, and that was the boy who gets eaten by the shark in "Jaws." They are a young couple who have finally found some time to get out of town and away from their lives (and cell phones). If this were a Greek tragedy you could point to the specific acts of hubris by each that doom them: he complains about her bringing along her laptop but she catches him using it while he finds her naked in bed but not in the mood for love making. Of course the Fates conspire against them that when heads are counted on the boat that they get missed and left behind.
We know from the start that Susan and Daniel are in for the long haul once they find themselves all alone in the water. Periodically the time of day pops up in the corner of the screen to tell us how long it has been, but the hours just keep rolling along. There are sharks and other things in the water for Susan and Daniel to worry about to be sure, but there is also nobody else for them to blame but each other as they ride the emotional and physical rollercoaster of being out in the middle of nowhere. Not only does it definitely put life in perspective, it forces them to do the same thing with regards to death.
"Open Water" is a "true" story in the same sense as "A Perfect Storm," where we basically know the start and the end (although I doubt the end Kentis comes up with is the same as the "true" story of the couple left behind in Australia's Great Barrier Reef) but the middle becomes conjecture. You can easily imagine Kentis, who wrote/directed/edited the film and is a certified diver, hearing the story of two divers being left behind and his mind coming up with thoughts and images of what that must have been like. The result is a sort of "realism," as in the imitation of life that the ancient Greeks considered their tragic plays to be, in that I bought the idea that this is what it would be like and this is what would happen. You might not like the ending, but you cannot consider it a cop out.
In a summer when I was assaulted by an overload of special effects in films like "I, Robot," or treated to jiggling cameras and constant smash cuts in films like "The Bourne Supremacy," this was a movie made by a guy sitting in a boat with a camera while two actors stayed in the water. "Open Water" is not cinema in the sense of "Jaws," which had the virtues of Steven Spielberg's sense of montage and John Williams' unforgettable score, but a movie that gets it sense of suspense and terror from the situation. The editing is straightforward and the music, mostly ominious stirngs and drums, is rather minimalistic.
I was thinking 4.0 for this film until the end, when I raised it a notch to 4.5. The DVD extras are okay, but not quite enough to round up. I fully understand that "Open Water" will not be appreciated by everybody who sees it (obviously given the vehement denunciations of the film) and that it is not a great film that any one will want to watch over and over again, like "Jaws." I watched "Open Water" again when it came out on DVD and will probably never watch it again. But it is an honest effort at filmmaking at a time when the rule is to substitute style and special effects for substance and story. Those who liked "The Blair Witch Project" until it turned out in the end to be a shaggy dog story will have no complaint on that score with this film.
