Only two years separate The Fourth Man, the final Dutch language movie by director Paul Verhoeven, and the explosive commencement of his Hollywood career. Controversy raged about violence in Flesh & Blood, RoboCop and everything else he made thereafter. Yet controversy has always been a part of the filmmaker's work. This savage comedy shocker could well be seen as a trial run for Basic Instinct, since it features an ice-cold seductress (Renée Soutendijk) with mysterious motivations and sexual preferences. The hallucinatory tale follows a novelist (Jeroen Krabbé) first falling for her, and then feverishly investigating whether she's a serial husband killer. The film is full of what would soon be recognized as Verhoeven trademarks: a little blasphemy, a lot of nudity, dispassionate characters, and hidden agendas. One of the aspects that caught the eye of international audiences was the film's colorful lighting and camerawork. This was from Jan de Bont, who, thanks in large part to Verhoeven, would go on to direct Speed and others. Full of symbolic flourishes and allegorical plot points The Fourth Man is a dizzying display of the type of black comedy that not even Verhoeven can get away with in today's politically aware industry. --Paul Tonks

Description

Based on Henry van Dyke's classic, The Story of the Other Wise Man, this fictional story set in Biblical times is told in gently comic terms. A Magi named Artaban (Martin Sheen) sees a sign in the heavens that he hopes will lead him and his faithful servant to the Messiah. Artaban takes with him three precious gifts to present to the Messiah. For 33 years Artaban pursues Jesus, only to miss Him at every turn. Along the way, Artaban uses his gifts to help people in dire need. He now has nothing to present to the Messiah when he finds Him. The story culminates on Easter Sunday as Artaban, old and dying, finally encounters the new King, bringing peace to his life. A deeply moving experience examining what true faith really means. Starring Martin Sheen and Alan Arkin.

5 out of 5 stars classic inspiration & entertainment.......2007-04-18

My whole family enjoys watching this movie year after year. Perfect for Christmas, Easter or anytime. Martin Sheen is wonderful but Alan Arkin entertains with the delightful portrayal of the "wiseman's" servant.
The ending never fails to bring tears to our eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Best Known Secret.......2007-03-30

It's hard to belive such a great movie has somehow bypassed the Christmas season. With stars like Martin Sheen and Alan Arkin (plus a cameo by a very young Charlie Sheen) and a plot that is moving and inspirational, I don't understand why it's not in the top ten Christmas shows. We have watched it for years and enjoy it every season - however, our copy was VHS and we're glad to now have it on DVD

4 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Christmas or Easter Movie.......2007-01-17

The Fourth Wise Man is a wonderful classic story with an inspirational theme about finding purpose in life. It was cast with talented, well-known actors who do a good job of presenting the story with all of its drama and humor. This is a film that all ages can enjoy and find meaningful. It is the most historically and Biblically accurate work of fiction I have seen.

5 out of 5 stars We all are 'The Fourth Wise Man".......2007-01-11

This incredible multi-layered, multi-leveled inspiration is a quiet classic for every season, for every age. It tells the story of the journey of searching and how the endeavor itself is never in vain. The beautiful interpretation of faith's seeking its own justification is simplified for those in question and makes even simpler, the purported complicated endeavor-making sense of finally, finding 'your answer' to it all. This is a library 'keeper'. A classic, not unlike 'The Alchemist'... yet less vague in the presenting of an important ideal for these times when doubt seems to be the catylist. This will infuse in the heart and mind of the viewer, the faith and energy to keep going, daily, no matter what your goal. This is time 'wisely spent' to rekindle hope and diffuse illusive answers. You'll love it, and it will love you back.

    "The Fourth Man"

    An Early Masterpiece

    Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

Paul Verhoeven is probably best known in America for having made "Basic Instinct" but "The Fourth Man" is his masterpiece. Its amazing script and ending that will leave you intrigued make this a movie that should not be missed. Here is the story of a man and how he allows himself to become trapped. He is an alcoholic bisexual who finds himself in a spider web where he and other characters must meet their fate. Gerard is on a train on his way to make a speech. As he arrives at his destination he meets Christine, a powerful looking blonde with seductive charms. Even though it is obvious that he prefers man, he gives into her seductive charms and stays with her in her house to be used sexually. While there he noses around and discovers that she has been married three times and all of her husbands have died. Christine has videos of them before their deaths and Gerard develops paranoia.
What the movie attempts to show is the nature of women--that there are good ones and bad ones. It contains the penultimate male fantasy--having a really sexy and beautiful woman lusting after him and having another woman as his protector. While this is occurring in the film, we are treated to a kind of suspense that we ordinarily do not find in film. Verhoeven uses metaphors to create suspense and visually the movie is absolutely stunning.
There is a great deal of full frontal nudity in the film and it adds to the overall effect of the sensuality of the plot and the characters themselves. What really happens in the plot is left up to the viewer to decide--was there murder? We never really know but that doesn't take away from the theme. There are also heavy religious undertones and the existence of G-d is also brought into play. We never know if the movie is about sin and redemption--Gerard is a lecherous character who has sunk to the depths of degradation is comes across as a total failure as a human being.
The film is definitely misogynistic yet it is also atmospheric and beautiful in its ugliness. It is interesting and thought provoking and was a defining step on the path to opening the world to male nudity and homosexuality portrayed on the silver screen.

5 out of 5 stars much better than 'basic instinct'.......2007-01-29

paul verhoeven made his masterpiece before he took off to america to make basic instinct - the fourth man tells the tale of a man caught in a spider web - it is not a mysognyst film as one reviewer stated but more of an allegory about a man and how he himself becomes trapped.. He is an alcoholic who is as easily seduced by the young male lover as he is by the woman who is in between the two men.. this spider (god perhaps) has caught these men in a metaphoric gesture - and they are doomed to meet their fate - in a way they represent the artist who can't escape his own undertaking.. this film plays like one of the great novels - you are just sucked in and are a victim to its bite.

3 out of 5 stars Verhoeven's Original Blond With a Taste for Blood.......2006-11-26

For me this film held the most interest in the respect that it was early Paul Verhoeven, something I had never seen before. This was a quality experience that gave insight into his later work and created more curiosity for me about his earlier work. It does have a little trouble taking flight at the beginning, but once it does it provides the viewers with a worthwhile script and an intriguing ending. The story follows Gerard as he travels by train to give a literary speech. Once in the new town he hits it off with a good looking blond named Christine who has femme fatale written all over her. If only our hero had had the opportunity to see "Basic Instinct" before this journey of his perhaps he would have used more common sense. This controversial author with a focus on death gives in to her sexual demands even though he is quite clearly a homosexual. He decides to stay in her house for a few more days as a sort of live in sex toy. This leads to something of a problem as his snooping ways get the best of him and he soon discovers that Christine has been married three previous times. Plus, all of her exes have died and she has some very suspicious videos of them immediately before their deaths. Paranoia grows on top of paranoia in his mind after he concludes (rightfully) that all of her previous beaus have passed. I should point out that this whole Sherlock Holmes thing he is doing is not just out of innocent curiosity. No, you see, it is all part of a master plan to get close to Christine's other lover who Gerard has a thing for. . .real bad.

The thing that pushed this film over the edge from an OK one to a good one is the ending. It is left up to you to decide the truth about the situation. This is a tricky device to use as nobody really wants to spend two hours just to be left in the dark. The title refers to Gerard's theory that Christine plans on killing four men, and by the end of the film a fourth man connected to her has died. But is he truly the 4th Man? Or is it all part of a terrible run of luck for her? What about the film reels he finds? And what about the final death which certainly looks orchestrated by nobody other than fate. There are other questions to be found here as well. The whole film has a nice surreal quality to it. The dream sequences are disturbing and morbid. Many of them foretell the future, but we of course don't know it at the time. I also liked the way it swam in its own delicious sleaze. For instance, near the end Gerard and his object of lust find themselves in a tomb on the verge of sex. But it's not just any tomb, it is the tomb of Christine's three dead husbands. Oh please. Like they would really be buried together and like these two guys would just accidentally stumble in there for some recreational activities. I also liked the way they played with out perceptions of reality. We all see what we want to see. But Gerard is a drunk, Catholic writer, so he really sees what he wants to see. So I ask you, what did he see? Was he a crazed madman with no feel for truth or a perceptive onlooker who spoke the truth when nobody else dared to? ***1/4

    5 out of 5 stars Gripping movie.......2005-12-25

Verhoeven's last Dutch movie was made out of spite. Increasingly lambasted for his films in his native Holland for being too perverted and desperate to make the move to Hollywood, this was the movie he made to show off potential executives in the USA. There were movie offers that he was interested in, in America, but due to one reason or another, he ended up frustrated with the whole process of waiting.

Often cited as a prototype of Basic Instinct, this can easily work on its own levels. Sure there are similarities ie is there murder involved? What is the lead character hiding? Bisexuality etc. but it's a different movie with a different feel to it.

The story starts out that Gerard Reve is a bisexual author who believes his stories " lie the truth." It is an interesting statement at a lecture he gives but what I found more interesting was that after stating he was a Catholic and goes on to say that " science is Catholic." Given that anyone I know who is deeply religious is against the very notion of science because " they are trying to play God." I'm not one bit religious but it provides a thought provoking question in " Is science an extension of Christianity." Believe it or not I spent half the night thinking over that one over since it had stuck in my head.

The great thing about Verhoeven's pre-Hollywood movies is their ability to insert glorious visual treats. The visions that Gerard gets at times are distinctly creepy. While on a train he notices a picture of a hotel and is transported there while daydreaming. He goes to the door and is about to open the door when he sees an eye pop out of the door and ooze it's way down leaving a bloody smear across the door. Some may see shades of Bunuel and Dali in that shot alone.

Ingmar Bergman, a director Paul Verhoeven frequently cites as an influence, also shows. The opening image of a spider preying on a fly as it's victim is also startling in it's detail. How it creeps around and wraps the fly around in it's web so it can't move. As I say it's fascinating in it's detail.

Gerard falls for Christine, a hairdresser left a fortune from her dead husband. But is she hiding a secret from Gerard. The plot slowly unravels as does Gerard's sanity while his mind is giving him clues as to what might be the truth ( or a lie of the truth as it were ). Whether Christine is what Gerard thinks she is is up to you.

If I were to compare this to Basic Instinct ( which is inevitable really ), I would have to say that this lays more intrigue on the viewer and in a certain way is like the spider laying a web whereas Basic Instinct is a lot more blunt and obvious. Apart from some homoeroticism which borders on blasphemy if you are particularly religious in The Fourth Man, Basic Instinct has lesbianism which is a lot more palatable for Americans. There are calls of misogyny and it is true there are instances in The Fourth Man where that occurs but it is not as crude as Basic Instinct. In contrast to Basic Instinct, yes there are similarities but this feels like a completely different movie and has a different feel to it as well. While The Fourth Man is an atmospheric chiller that grips the viewer, Basic Instinct, despite the plot that revolves around it, feels a bit like a soft porn parody. However that is only my view of things. All in all this movie should be seen by those who like a sense of adventure in their movies.

    5 out of 5 stars Movie for a Post-Christian World.......2005-12-17

The director, Paul Verhoeven, creates a profoundly Christian movie and presents it to a bored post-Christian world disguised as a cheap sex comedy with special effects. He must be laughing bitterly now, to see us avert our eyes from this tale of sin and redemption. Hard to imagine, isn't it? Show me a man more more sunk in degradation than our eminent Dutch writer and drunk and lecher and thief, masterfully played by the actor Jeroen Krabbe. Who would die to redeem this failure of a human being? Yet someone does die an ugly vicious death. And the world continues on its path, untouched, as Verhoeven no doubt expected.

These are good movies; of the two I liked "Guilty Concience" better, but that's just a preference -- "Blunt" was quite interesting as well. The price is right too.

However, this is a NASTY tansfer. Obviously vidoe source, cheap, careless transfer, audio noise & hiss so bad that the dialog is often unintelligible, wobbly color, and sectors so bad that my DVD player choked and to be forced to skip the chapter.

Personally, I'd be careful about any DVDs from this publisher.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Cerebral Spy Thriller, No Special FX, & Dull .......2006-02-18

First let me say; I really Like spy movies. And this being a true story (makes it very appealing) with Anthony Hopkins as one of the main characters along with the cheap price made it a must have.

With that being said, my DVD is from "Passion Procductions" This copy has both decent picture and decent sound. Could be better, sure but it is quite adequete and I think a better version/transfer than the one another reviewer has. But hey it's an old movie that never made much money so they aren't going to put bucks into the reprint.

It was for me very Staid, obviously a low budget movie. There's virtually no action and much of the dialogue been very english, couched with many axioms Americans aren't familiar with made it a bit hard to follow at times. Coupled with sometimes you can't even understand what they are saying. But these spots are that often and don't seem to be forfieteing any of the story necessaries. Also it leaves gaps of info. in the front and end of the movie. You never know exactly what these guys motivation is besides them being good friends. What were they shareing/giving up to the russians? And what did they hope to gain by that risk? For me it left made more questions than it answered. It was interesting but showed almost no cloak & dagger affair that I'm sure the real/complete story holds. Its flet like it was the sanitized version that was approved by the British M5.
There's a lot of display of how several of the characters including Hopkins part were Gay. In fact I think they spent to much time on this fact. Like in those days this was as bad as being a traitor? And the ending was, well abrupt and cut short wanting for the full play-out of how they got caught and how it was all handeled in the end.
For me the movie portrayed the English Government and Secret Service M5 either didn't really care about the trist, or was aware the whole time and working it from both ends... or maybe both. Truly a movie for those really into Spy movies.

If you like old spy movies I would recommend "The Spy who came in from the cold" 1965 with Richard Burton

3 out of 5 stars This one deserves a better DVD transfer.......2003-01-14

Anthony Hopkins has made many made-for-TV movies, and this is one of them.

        And it's better than most.

However, DirectSource's video transfer is grainy at best--my copy even jumps forward to the next "chapter" before the end of the previous one! Hardly what I like to find in a DVD. (Therefore the rating of 3 stars instead of what otherwise would rate a 4 or even 4 and a half.)

If you're looking for a watchable version of this one on DVD, it will "do," since the subject matter is good enough to hold one's attention. However, if you like your movies presented with a decent image quality, don't spend your money on this one.

I can only hope a DVD edition with better picture resolution than this one (the only one available at the moment) becomes available in the future!

3 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Lousy DVD.......2007-01-25

Arthur Jamison (Anthony Hopkins) is a brilliant and successful criminal defense attorney. There's just one problem. His wife (Blythe Danner) has decided to file for divorce and is planning to milk him for all he is worth. Since Arthur doesn't want that, he needs to figure out a way to kill his wife. But, being the attorney he is, he knows that he'd be the first suspect. While he plots various ways to bring about her demise, his mistress (Swoosie Kurtz) shows up unexpectedly. Now what will Arthur do?

This is an interesting little made for TV movie from the mid-80's, made long before any of the stars were a success. It has a bit of a low budget feel, but all three stars do a great job acting. It almost feels like a play since almost all of it takes place in Arthur and Louise's house and these three characters are the only real characters.

The plot is hard to discuss without giving anything away. We get several sequences of Arthur's plots to kill his wife and then the cross examination he images he'll have when the case goes to trial. I was getting a little bored with the movie, but half way through there's a great twist that grabbed my interest for the remainder of the film.

While the movie itself is 5 stars, I had to take a couple off for the DVD transfer. It's absolutely horrid. The picture looks like it is a third of fourth generation VHS recording. The transitions at the original commercial breaks are jarring.

While this is great movie, the DVD is a disappointment. If you must have this movie, go ahead. But be forewarned this is not the quality we normally get these days.

1 out of 5 stars Dreadful....hard to believe Hopkins and Danner could be this bad.......2006-02-24

Not only was the DVD quality dreadful, the entire movie was equally awful. I bought this thinking that the acting would make up for the video quality. Much to my surprise, I found that even terrific actors (Anthony Hopkins and Blythe Danner) can make dreadful films. The acting was awful, the plot boring.

I had trouble even sitting still for the 90 minutes of the film. Avoid this stinker at all costs.

2 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY IT UNTIL YOU READ THIS!!!.......2005-07-15

Nearly all the other reviews are right...the transfer copy of this was obviously done off the TV by somebody with a subpar VHS recorder, a low-quality tape and bad editing skills. But beware...at least half a dozen cheap video companies have made their prints from the same inferior master. So don't think buying a different copy with different graphics will make a difference, it won't, it's still the same lousy print. Until a real reputable company (Criterion, Image, etc.) buys it and announces they will be putting this out, any future copies will be as bad as these. That being said, if the quality of your print matters little, then buy it and enjoy the film, it's a great one!

1 out of 5 stars Great movie - Lousy copy.......2005-07-09

This is a very good movie and very cleverly written, and I highly recommend it, HOWEVER, the quality of the copy I received from this Canada-based company was the worst copy of a movie I have ever seen. If you made a copy of a copy of a copy and did that at least 20 times, you would end up with a better copy than I got. And as unbelievable as it may seem, it actually says on the box and on the cassette label that it was recorded in EP instead of SP, which of course was never mentioned in the description. I will never buy from this company again, and in closing take note that Amazon has a no return policy on video purchases, so beware. Thanks a lot for the rip off, guys.

4 out of 5 stars A complete difference in opinion.......2005-05-22

I bought this dvd for 1.00 in walmart. Contrary to the previous reviews that I just read, I felt that it was important to express my views on this film because all of the reviews strictly concentrated on the quality of the DVD or VHS, and rarely if at all spoke about the movie itself. I had no problem with the quality of the film, it reminded me of a 1984 quality even though it was released in 1999, which doesn't bother me at all. The film itself was very interesting. I felt that the writer had a unique idea in the fact that one of the main characters, Anthony Hopkins, a smart criminal attorney, talks to himself out loud, while actually seeing himself. He prosecutes himself in order to make sense of the case at hand. While he is working on an alibi and a plot to kill his wife. Meanwhile, there are so many different scenarios that he mull's over and that are played out for the audience to imagine and visualize. As the movie develops, we discover that his wife gets involved with his mistress, and together, they plot HIS murder. The only difference between Anthony and his wife, is that because of his professional background, he is busy thinking and planning logically about how it would play out after her death. The ironic part is that the mistress and the wife wined up carrying out HIS original plan, which by the way he already ruled out because it would incriminate him. I guess it's like if you snooze you lose or more so, he seemed to think too much about the consequences and in the end, his wife actually provaled because she didn't hesitate, although, we don't see into the after effects of the murder because it ended not abruptly, but shortly after this took place, which by the way, was my only disappointment because the movie could have gone on for another 25 minutes and I still wouldn't mind at all.
