By some lucky quirk of fate, Phone Booth landed on Hollywood's A-list, but this thriller should've been a straight-to-video potboiler directed by its screenwriter, veteran schlockmeister Larry Cohen, who's riffing on his own 1976 thriller God Told Me To. Instead it's a pointless reunion for fast-rising star Colin Farrell and his Tigerland director, Joel Schumacher, who employs a multiple-image technique similar to TV's 24 to energize Cohen's pulpy plot about an unseen sniper (maliciously voiced by 24's Kiefer Sutherland) who pins his chosen victim (a philandering celebrity publicist played by Farrell) in a Manhattan phone booth, threatening murder if Farrell doesn't confess his sins (including a potential mistress played by Katie Holmes in a thankless role). In a role originally slated for Jim Carrey, Farrell brings vulnerable intensity to his predicament, but Cohen's irresistible premise is too thin for even 81 brisk minutes, which is how long Schumacher takes to reach his morally repugnant conclusion. --Jeff Shannon

Relating to the Blu-ray release--not the movie itself.......2007-05-16
PHONE BOOTH Blu-ray is packed the way HD movies should come. It's loaded with MPEG2@26MBPS video, which means that everything on the screen looks simply incredible. The colors are vibrant and the images are sharp and clear. At this point in time, picture quality really doesn't get any better.
The audio portion of the disc was treated in the same fashion. The soundtrack as well as the special effects noises were crystal clear and come through a surround sound system gloriously.
Unfortunately, high-tech doesn't improve the movie. It's still a good watch with plenty of tension, but not enough of the story is given. Colin Farrell and Forest Whitaker are the only two given the chance to really act. An argument can be made for Kiefer Sutherland's voice-over work, but he was missing in action when it came to being on-stage. Also, other than the commentary, there were no extras or behind-the-scenes pieces.
But it's top of the line for people looking for the true experience of an HD disc for their home entertainment systems.
Don't even think about hanging up.......2007-03-04
When you're caught in the tactical scope of a 30-caliber bolt action rifle, you most likely tend to pay close attention to what the triggerman is saying. Stu Shepard (Colin Farrell) is stuck in that predicament. He's trapped in a New York City phonebooth, desperately trading wits with a psychotic caller.
Stu is at the madman's mercy as his life's choices are being picked apart. The majority of this movie takes place in this phonebooth. This confiscating setting really pushes the tension to new heights. Stu slowly unravels as he's forced to look deep within himself.
This cantankerous exchange feels like an old western shootout. The only problem is, Stu is firing blanks.
Phonebooth is so well orchestrated, it makes you dismiss the improbability of certain pieces of the story. This really is an intense psychological thriller, and Colin Farrell turns in a his best performance ever. I also like the fact that the director, Joel Schumacher, kept this film short(81 min). Anything more might have been redundant for this story.
good idea, bad movie.......2007-03-01
I thought the idea of Phone Booth was great, but the movie is just bad. Maybe Hitchcock or Welles could have pulled it off, but this is just plain sad. Skip it.
interesting idea.......2007-02-22
This film had a very unique plot that would either work well or not at all. It actually did. the whole story revolves arould a phone booth andthe hero is not you typical one. More of an anti-hero with vices but you end up feeling sympathy for him. The directing and casting we good and all in alll a good movie to watch
Interesting .......2007-02-13
Larry Cohen's flick Phone Booth is an interesting, not to mention unusual, piece of work. It plays like a vulgar movie length episode of the Twilight Zone. Colin Farrell turns in the performance of his life as the sleazy PR guy. On the other hand, Kiefer Sutherland fails to be a menacing enough phone caller and that dampens the fear factor in this flick.
Given the profound lack of originality in Hollywood, any time a half way original movie such as Phone Booth comes our way, you simply have to at least consider giving it a try.

A single phone call can change a man's life
or possibly end it. Colin Farrell delivers a captivating, off-the-hook performance as Stu Shepard, a self-centered New York City publicist who suddenly finds himself on the deadly end of a high-powered rifle scope. Now it's a real-time race against the clock as Stu must outwit a psychotic sniper in a frantic scramble from phone booth to freedom. Directed by Joel Schumacher, this groundbreaking "tightly-made thriller" (Sidekick Magazine) co-stars Forest Whitaker, Katie Holmes, and Kiefer Sutherland as the crazed gunman calling the shots, literally.
Customer Reviews:
DON'T ANSWER THE PHONE..........2007-01-20
This film is a moderately entertaining thriller, at best, with moments of suspense that are few and far between. The plot, while promising, is too contrived and fails in its execution. It is saved from total failure only by the excellent performances given by Colin Ferrell and Kiefer Sutherland. Their performances, however, are not enough to make this film any more than a mediocre one.
Colin Ferrell plays the role of Stu Shepard, a guy from the Bronx, who is a fast talking, self-important publicist for those celebrities who want to be more important than they are or deserve to be. His wife Kelly (Radha Mitchell) is a beautiful young woman. Yet, she is not enough for the adrenaline charged Stu, who is lusting after another young woman, a beautiful and aspiring actress named Pamela (Katie Holmes), who has no idea Stu is married.
When Stu enters a phone booth in midtown Manhattan one day to call Pamela, he answers the phone when it rings and gets a call that will change his life forever and bring about some self-realization. It seems that out mystery caller, played with effectively creepy resonance by Kiefer Sutherland, has had his sights on Stu for some time. Now, he has Stu right where he wants him, and Stu, for reasons the viewer will find out when watching the movie, has no choice but to play along and stay exactly where he is in this deadly game of cat and mouse.
This film suffers from a leaden screenplay that brings the entire film to the level of a B movie that should have gone straight to video. In fact, do yourself a favor and avoid buying this film. Instead, settle for renting it, if you are a Colin Ferrell or Kiefer Sutherland fan. If you are not, deduct one star from my rating.
The Voice of Kiefer Sutherland is not Enough.......2007-01-12
All we hear is the voice of Kiefer Sutherland. Kiefer is good but he can't save this movie that is played out in very bad taste. Every other word seems to be a four letter word. It made the movie very uncomfortable to watch. What a shame because the idea behind the plot was very good. Children should not watch this movie.
Good psychologic thriller.......2006-09-30
I can't understand how this title is not in stock now.I bought it just 2 weeks ago.The movie tells the story of a NY publicist(Farrell) who finds himself caught in a deadly game in a phone booth. After he calls his lover from the booth a lunatic sniper(Sutherland) hears the conversation and calls him threating him to call her and say the truth about his marriage after he dismisses a pizza delivery boy.He tells him that he will hang up but the caller is about to kill him with an advanced sniper rifle with magnified scope and silencer and laser view.As Shepard doesn't believes him he get hit by a bullet that almost kill him and later a pimp is killed by a mistake in the conversation and the witnesses tought was Shepard who pull the trigger. Thus NYPD took the neighborhood and takes part on the situation. As local news channels arrives and also Shepard's wife the caller pursues Shepard to tell his wife the truth about the calls to the other woman. He complies but the caller lies to him and urges him to take a gun the previously hide on the top of the booth. He refuses to get it so the caller once the other girl arrives to scene pursuades Shepard to tell all the truth and confess he's a liar,he's a fake on camera.Meanwhile the police has found the sniper in a room in bulding. So he continues talking to him until the NSE finds him dead with his neck cut.The dead man is the pizza delivery boy.So that's the final the sniper suicided before the police broke the door. But in the ambulance with blurred shots we see the real sniper and caller and warns him about his new behaviour if he doesn't last he will hearing from him.
The Dvd is Ok with 16/9 and full screen formats but no special feats or making offs.
For the 10 bucks it cost me is a very good purchase.

The Voice of Kiefer Sutherland Can't Save this One.......2007-01-12
All we hear is the voice of Kiefer Sutherland. Kiefer is good but he can't save this movie that is played out in very bad taste. Every other word seems to be a four letter word. It made the movie very uncomfortable to watch. What a shame because the idea behind the plot was very good. Children should not watch this movie.
Please Hang Up this Nauseating Farce.......2007-01-12
There's about 15 minutes worth of script here. At best this film could have been stretched into a taught half-hour TV show in the hands of a director like Alfred Hitchcock. However, those days are long gone. This is another example of a potentially good story premise poorly executed. The trailer says it all. Did I mention that Colin Farrell is thoroughly obnoxious and downright nauseating? Only Forest Whitaker and Kiefer Sutherland keep this from being a one star zero.

A GOOD AND ENTERTAINING FILM!.......2006-10-02
This is a pretty decent suspense-thriller. Colin Farrell portrays a man whose life has just been turned upside down by a hidden sniper. While making a phone call in a phone booth to his girlfriend, he finds himself the object of a sniper (Keifer Sutherland) who has now taken control of his life. The sniper has the booth bugged, and has placed a cellphone inside for him to use as a contact. Not to mention, if he hangs up the phone the sniper will kill him. When the police arrive on the scene, the lead officer (Forest Whitaker) realizes that there is something wrong. If Colin Farrell makes any gestures toward the police that he is being boxed in and made to do things at the whim of this sniper, the sniper promises to not only kill him, but innocent bystanders as well.
The sniper has him doing all sorts of strange things, and making calls to various people, in particular his girlfriend. The film is suspenseful and not a bad film. I noticed that amazon no longer has this film on DVD, but it is part of a double film package. I never saw Transporter, the other film, however, if you can get a copy from your DVD store I would highly recommend it. It is definetly worth owning. Colin Ferrell does an excellent portrayal as a man caught between a rock and a hard place. And Forest Whitaker excels as the police officer who is hip to what is REALLY taking place inside the phone booth. Unable to move, or signal anyone, the film makes for a very interesting and enjoyable suspense film. Highly recommended.
