Anthony Mann was a poverty-row director with ambition when he transformed this story of undercover Treasury agents (based on a collection of true cases) into a moody, alienated drama about two lawmen living a shadowed life in the underworld where a blown cover means death. Square-jawed Dennis O'Keefe, a former leading man turned beefy B movie tough guy, and Alfred Ryder star as the titular T-men who take over a counterfeiting investigation when their predecessor is killed, posing as street thugs to infiltrate their way into the gang and living the dangerous life of the gangster to the hilt. The documentary-style realism, with its authoritative narrator, location shooting, and stock-shot interludes of shuffling papers and laboratory testing, is given a nightmarish dimension with stark sets lit in claustrophobic shadows, creating an abstract, eerie emptiness. Penned by John C. Higgins (who wrote Mann's previous film, Railroaded!), and shot by the brilliant cinematographer John Alton, T-Men is raw in comparison to the smoother, more handsome studio noirs such as The Maltese Falcon and Out of the Past. Saddled with often awkward dialogue and hackneyed narration, this low-budget gem derives its power from the brutal violence (often offscreen but no less unsettling for it) and spare style, and the desperation in the hard faces of the unglamorous actors. Mann, Alton, Higgins, and star O'Keefe reteamed for the moody Raw Deal the next year. --Sean Axmaker

A U.S. soldier is dead, and military lawyers Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee and Lieutenant Commander JoAnne Galloway want to know who killed him. "You want the truth?" snaps Colonel Jessup (Jack Nicholson). "You can't handle the truth!" Astonishingly, Jack Nicholson's legendary performance as a military tough guy in A Few Good Men really amounts to a glorified cameo: he's only in a few scenes. But they're killer scenes, and the film has much more to offer. Tom Cruise (Kaffee) shines as a lazy lawyer who rises to the occasion, and Demi Moore (Galloway) gives a command performance. Kevin Bacon, Kiefer Sutherland, J.T. Walsh, and Cuba Gooding Jr. (of Jerry Maguire fame) round out the superb cast. Director Rob Reiner poses important questions about the rights of the powerful and the responsibilities of those just following orders in this classic courtroom drama. --Alan Smithee

....Darn good movie [DVD]...Sorkin's screen/play defines the spartan USMC discipline to perfection...for instance, when Jack Nicholson [he overshadows the entire cast of this film] berates all the non/combatant Navy JAG/attorneys trying to bring his illustrious Marine career to an abrupt end is spell/binding and cuts right to the bone [an immense scene of impact]...his bombastic and clarion call to what a Fleet Marine Force Marine [FMF] is all about is so true to all the unsuspecting civilians taking life for granted, etc...his sneering but simple, "Thank You" is all he expects...."and be on your way, my man" is totally real...99% of the American people don't know the instantanious, and grating/lethal feeling... I'm about to die!!....pooof, dead!!...no more mama-no more papa...no more nothing!!...is what Fleet Marines go through in combat operations 24/7 by closing with America's enemies, etc...Nicholson tries his darndest to bring this sailent point home with alacrity, "You Want Me On That Wall..You...NEED... Me On That Wall!!!"...he's right on, folks.....give the devil his due...as for the final fadeout, Nicholson's character gets his just reward of due process of the Military Code of Justice...but, I say again...Nicholson's portrayal as a FMF Marine Colonel is colossal by the fact, how the United States Marine Marine Corps' commitment to duty, honor and country allows all Americans to go about their daily rush of life in peace and at days end, sleep the good sleep while the USMC guards the ramparts like no other, since 1775...a very good cast begets a great show!!....Semper Fidelis...SSGT CHRIS SARNO-USMC FMF

This movie is very good, especially for it's memorable moments in the end. It is a nice window into the lives of our military people and how honor and obediance play into their lives.

If YOU can HANDLE THE TRUTH ... This is a spectacular Movie. It really is ! A Must See ! Jack Nicholson, Tom Cruise, Kiefer Sutherland, Demi Moore-Kutcher among others....who could ask for a better casting ? I never thought in a million years that all those TOP stars could actually act together and make it work..OHH but they did and the movie is GREAT ! Get it..u will not be sorry ! A CODE RED will be issued on anyone who does not buy this movie....J/K that is not done anymore..now is it ? Check this movie out !

5 out of 5 stars You can't handle the truth!.......2007-02-12

4.5 Stars. An absolutely stellar cast saves this film from being ever-so-slightly boring. While some of the courtroom scenes drag, the rest of the script is tight and packed with light humor in appropriate moments.

Two marines, Downey and Dawson, are accused of murdering private Santiago during a disciplinary procedure known unofficially as a Code Red. Assigned to represent them is naval lawyer Lt. Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise) and Lt. Sam Weinberg (Kevin Pollak), joined by internal affairs officer Lt. Cdr. JoAnne Galloway (Demi Moore). The chain of command extending downward from Col. Nathan R. Jessep (Jack Nicholson) denies ordering the Code Red, so Dawson and Downey's only hope is if Kaffee can prove they were following orders given to them from above.

Kaffee and Weinberg find themselves facing off with prosecutor Capt. Jack Ross (Kevin Bacon) and hard-core marines such as Lt. Jonathan Kendrick (Kiefer Sutherland), Lt. Col. Matthew Andrew Markinson (the late, great J.T. Walsh), Cpl. Carl Hammaker (Cuba Gooding Jr.), and of course, Col. Jessep.

Innocence, orders, protocols, procedures, guilt, and morals are strewn over the courtroom in a trial over the loss of one life, and potential loss of two more. Where is the line between right and wrong drawn? Kaffee (the carefree one), Joanna (the serious one) and Sam (the stable one) are forced to work as a team to uncover the truth as to what happened to break down the chain of military command the night private Santiago died.

The cast is first-rate and the performances stellar in this tense drama. The scripting does drag at times, but can't distract from the overall plot. Jack Nicholson, though his screen time is limited, steals the show with his portrayal of Col. Jessep, a war-zone hardened marine of high stature, slated for promotion. This movie is a must-see for fans of courtroom or military dramas. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Watch which captivates interest.......2007-02-12

My interest was quickly captured by this movie and enjoyed it from beginning to end. A tale of honor and justice and proof.

Agree with the other reviews who thought most of the acting was superb, from Cruise to the exceptional character which Nicholson pulls off so convincingly;was a super watch for me and one that I'll want to see again.

The plot is intriguing and believable, and the plot slowly unwinds. Even if one thinks it is predictable, and it is (you know they'll win the case) it peaks your interest till the end. However, that being said the surprise verdict of the dishonorable discharge makes a very salient point at the end, and bonds the Marine with the Navy attorney in a superb way of closing the film.

This is one of the best parodies of the '40s hardboiled detective genre, with a very clever conceit: weaving the plot and production design around memorable movie clips (The Killers, The Big Sleep, Double Indemnity, The Lost Weekend, White Heat, This Gun for Hire, Sorry, Wrong Number, Notorious). Steve Martin plays the cool Rigby Reardon, who tries solving an incomprehensible mystery with the assistance of Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Burt Lancaster, Fred MacMurray, Ingrid Bergman, and Ray Milland, among others. It's all silly hokum with Rachel Ward as the pretty moll and director-cowriter Carl Reiner as the nefarious villain. Miklos Rozsa takes us back to yesteryear with his lush score, and, fittingly, Edith Head handles the period costumes in her final production. --Bill Desowitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Brilliance.......2007-06-14

Steve Martin and Carl Reiner sat through hundreds of hours of classic films to find the footage they needed to splice in to "their" movie. The results were pure genius.

The editing and set designs were so flawless that it actually appears as though Steve Martin was starring in a film with the likes of Alan Ladd, Humphrey Bogart, Vincent Price, James Cagney, Veronica Lake, Joan Crawford, the list goes on and on.

The premise and plot are wacky, but it doesn't matter. This movie is so refreshing that you are able to overlook the rediculous plan of the major villain and the outlandishness of the situations that Martin constantly finds himself in (in one scene, he pours coffee grinds into a pot for two minutes and eight seconds!).

Martin geniously portrays a street-savvy, deadpan, hard-boiled private eye and still manages to make you laugh hysterically while maintaiing his straight-line, tough-guy persona . How he didn't crack himself up while filming these scenes is beyond me.

The film itself is very enjoyable, but it's also fun to try and pick out the scenes from the "classic" films and try to idenify who the actors are and what films the scenes were taken from.

If you don't want to buy the DVD, please, by all means, RENT it! This movie will please comedy fans, Steve Martin fans, and real movie buffs.

Steve Martin (in voice-over): "The one thing I liked about Jimmie-Sue was the fact that the words 'I can't' weren't in her vocabulary. (to Veronica Lake) Hi, Jimmie-Sue. I need you to do something for me.

Veronica Lake: "I can't."

Steve Martin (in voice-over): "Well, I guess she'd added them since the last time I'd seen her."

4 out of 5 stars A simple plot with sublime execution.......2007-05-19

Steve Martin stars in this satire of 1940's film noir detective stories. The plot is simple, but the execution is sublime. Steve Martin's character is hired by a beautiful and mysterious woman who thinks that the death of her famous scientist father was no accident, despite what the police and newspapers are reporting. The movie is filmed in black & white and employs creative editing to splice in scenes of the great actors of the Golden Age: James Cagney, Veronica Lake, Burt Lancaster, Humphrey Bogart, Charles Laughton, Joan Crawford, Lana Turner, Barbara Stanwyck, Betty Davis and more.

The action teeters between melodramatic and pure slapstick, with sharp dialog. The photography is stunning, and I remember being amazed at the glow in the actors eyes', even with black & white film. Costuming was done by Edith Head, the winner of more Oscars than any other woman. Head was the perfect choice to match the modern actors costumes to those in the classic film footage.

4 out of 5 stars Overlooked Martin.......2007-04-28

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (DMDWP) is probably Steve Martin's most overlooked film. Coming at the time when Steve was still "Wild & Crazy", many were turned off by this movie. But this is actually one of his best. The seemless interplay between Martin and the great actors/actresses from the 30's and 40's is genius. Filmed in black & white, Martin plays a gumshoe detective. Rachel Ward plays the love interest. Filmed before computers allowed you to insert anything into a scene, the editing must have been a nightmare. But the end result is worth it. The comedy is dark and satirical. It is Martin's tribute to the great detective and murder mystery films of Hollywood's golden years. Best way to view this film; Wait till it's nighttime, stormy and have a large popcorn. This film is simply great entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars Steve Martin acts with some of the best movie stars of the 1940s.......2007-02-07

QUESTION: What do the following legendary movie stars from the 1940s have in common? Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Cary Grant, Barbara Stanwyck, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster, Ingrid Bergman, and Vincent Price.

ANSWER: They all appear in this private eye movie set in the 1940s with the hilarious Steve Martin.

Martin plays gumshoe Rigby Reardon who has a sensitivity to the words "cleaning women" and is hired by Juliet "Doll Face" Forrest (Rachel Ward) to investigate her father's (a scientist and cheese maker) mysterious death. Reardon smells a rat and follows a large maze of clues that turns this case into the "The Carlotta Mystery."

As Reardon attempts to crack this mystery, he encounters the legendary stars mentioned above (and many others) with some being friends, some being foes, or some being just important leads.

The ingenious, creative gimmick of this movie is that you have clips of legendary movie stars being intercut with the action so as to create a mystery. This gimmick works quite well.

Martin (who co-wrote this movie) plays his role as shamus Rigby Reardon with lots of funny one-liners and sight gags. Ward, who looks stunning in this movie, is a perfect "straight man" to Martin's humor.

Be aware that this is not a "laugh-out-loud" kind of movie but one that makes you chuckle a lot.

The background music of this movie is quite good as are the costumes. It was filmed in black and white.

There are two major problems I had. First, this movie tends to drag in places becoming, at times, tedious to watch. Second, all the legendary movie stars were difficult for me to identify (even though I did recognize the majority of them). Thus, this movie may be of interest only to those who are familiar with older movies.

Finally, the DVD itself (the one released in 1999) is perfect in picture and sound quality. It has minimal extras.

In conclusion, this is a gem of a movie, being one of Steve Martin's hilarious early comedies!!

4 out of 5 stars Still Uproarious Film Noir Pastiche Thanks to Clever Editing.......2007-01-21

Carl Reiner's 1982 pastiche on 1940's film noir has never received its due as a genuinely clever, often hilarious salute to a genre that is ripe for satirical treatment. Filmed in a rich black-and-white by Michael Chapman, the film unique intercuts footage from actual films of the period to make it seem like the then-current actors are interacting with the stars of those movies. Consequently, Steve Martin looks convincingly like he's talking to the likes of Humphrey Bogart in "The Big Sleep", James Cagney in "White Heat", Ingrid Bergman in "Notorious", Alan Ladd in "This Gun for Hire", Burt Lancaster in "The Killers", Kirk Douglas in "I Walk Alone", Fred MacMurray in "Double Indemnity", and several others. The result means there are some contrived plot turns and certainly variations in the graininess of the film stock (since 1982 was still well before the enhanced computer graphics we see today), but the film is still quite a kick after a quarter-century.

The basic plot is straightforward. Rigby Reardon is a classic, world-weary gumshoe in the Philip Marlowe mold, who is hired by the beautiful and mysterious Juliet Forrest to find out who killed her father, a renowned cheese scientist. The story gets complicated because a number of random characters are introduced through the creative editing of the classic film clips. Reardon meets up with some familiar faces, and just to watch their non-reaction to Reardon's antics is worthwhile in itself. Credit needs to go to the smart screenplay co-written by Reiner, Martin and George Gipe. Most of the scenes, originally intended as straight melodrama in their original context, have been turned into uproarious slapstick comedy routines (including Martin in drag as Barbara Stanwyck's blonde femme fatale from "Double Indemnity"), wicked double-entendres and shrewdly off-kilter dialogue scenes.

The film's climax lifts a long dramatic sequence from 1949's "The Bribe" in which Ava Gardner, Charles Laughton and Vincent Price actually appear to be playing more substantial roles in this movie. In what is probably my favorite of his early screen performances, Martin has a good time as Bogie wannabe Reardon, gratefully harnessing the manic energy he displayed in his previous collaboration with Reiner, "The Jerk". Just before she broke out big in "The Thorn Birds", the stunning Rachel Ward lends a hint of welcome sarcasm to the sexy, Bacall-like languor she provides as Juliet, tapping into a genuine comedy talent rarely used since. Reni Santoni has the only other role of significance as the grinning Captain Rodriguez, who gets entirely too preoccupied with Reardon's pajamas. Legendary costume designer Edith Head did her final work on this film, which is fitting since she did many of the costumes on the earlier films. The 1999 DVD unfortunately has no extras.

Tin Men, the second in Barry Levinson's ongoing film series about his native Baltimore in the 1950s and '60s, focuses on a pair of competing aluminum-siding salesman at a point when the industry was loaded with scam artists. Richard Dreyfuss and Danny DeVito play rivals who get involved in a fender-bender that quickly escalates from a minor argument into an all-out war, as they begin pulling practical jokes on each other. Dreyfuss takes it too far, however, when he sets out to seduce DeVito's unhappy wife (Barbara Hershey) and winds up falling in love with her. Much of the humor here comes from Levinson's keen ear as writer and director for the way these people talk--and what they talk about (like the discussion of why four men are living together without women on the Ponderosa in Bonanza). Beside the leads, the cast includes a great host of character actors, including Jackie Gayle, Bruno Kirby, John Mahoney, and J.T. Walsh. Others in Levinson's body of Baltimore films are Diner, Avalon, and the most recent, Liberty Heights. --Marshall Fine

Description

Cruise back to Baltimore 1963, to the time and turf of a rare American breed: the "tin man" (aluminum siding salesman). Two less-than-honest rivals in the tin game (Richard Dreyfuss and Danny DeVito) meet in a fender bender, but their bruised egos and quick tempers turn the minor accident into a major vendetta against each other's symbols of success -- their prized Cadillacs. In what would seem to be a coup de grace, Dreyfuss decides to seduce DeVito's neglected wife (Barbara Hershey), but this romantic maneuver causes nonstop twists and turns to both the heart and the funnybone. With a supporting cast that's absolutely classic and music by The Fine Young Cannibals, TIN MEN sounds as good as it looks!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tin Men.......2007-02-10

What a great film! It captures the spirit of Baltimore in that era perfectly.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2006-09-08

If this is not one of the most underrated comedies, I don't know what is. Asides from being a comedy, Tin Men is expertly effective in capturing the ups and downs as well as the tension of being a salesman/con artist. The movie also does a beautiful job in capturing the Baltimor of the 1960's with the lingo, the clothes, and the scenery. Danny DeVito and Richard Dreyfuss play the roles of two aluminum siding salesmen from rival companies. A car accident between the two open's the door to an array of hilarious maladies between the two - from busting up each other's cars to BB (Dreyfuss) sleeping with Tielly's (DeVito) wife. The storyline is great, the actors are excellent, and the movie overall is flawless. I must have watched the DVD over ten times by now!

5 out of 5 stars Baltimore, 1963 - so many Cadillac fins! .......2006-02-11

Tin Men is a gem. If you have ever been a sales person or been around them, especially door-to-door sales, you may recognize these characters. Richard Dreyfuss and Danny DeVito are Tin Men - that is aluminum siding salesmen who end up competing against each other for more than sales. They are hilarious anyway but together and with this script, VERY funny. This is a time capsule of the old-time salesman with the constant patter full of jokes and flattery, the consumer cons and sunny attitude toward a new day full of prospects. The "intellectual" discussion amongst the salesmen over Senor Wences and over the realism of Bonanza are priceless. Of note is one of the all-too-few appearances by J. T. Walsh as their sales manager. There is an additional audio track on this dvd with Levinson, Hershey, Cassel, Dreyfuss, Kirby, etc. discussing the making of the film. With at least four of his films taking place in Baltimore, I wonder if Levinson and John Waters have ever met?

4 out of 5 stars An Enduring Classis.......2005-09-30

We found Tin Men to be visually lush with beautifully photographed Cadillac fins, subtly amusing dialogue, and scenes that flowed naturally. It could be viewed just to hear the music, which was wonderful. The interesting story line even had "heart" without being maudlin. It will always be one of our favourites.

4 out of 5 stars The Metal Men.......2005-04-11

I guess what some people feel is funny is not funny to other people. I viewed this movie and have seen it a couple of times. I personally feel this is a funny movie. Devito has everything go wrong that could go wrong. He loses his wife (which he doesn't seem to want anyway), his house, the IRS is investigating him, he gets his car damaged and further damaged throughout the film. One scene in the movie that is funny is that Devito hasn't been making any money. So he goes home and tells his wife that it might be a good idea to move and downsize their home (His place is already small). The funny parts are Devito's bad luck and everything is crumbling around him. You feel for him and laugh at the situation as he does with a sardonic wit. It is an amusing film. Worth seeing. Give it a chance. The humor is sly. Good film.

Description

Book of Love delivers humor along with the mysteries of unrequited love and relationships gone bad. The film's story line focuses on main characters Jay, Will and Ben -- three men living, dating and loving in Los Angeles in the 90's -- who struggle with heartbreak and insecurity as a result of failed relationships. The three characters' stories unfold through sessions with their therapist - sessions that are often as comedic as they are insightful. Book of Love features an all-star ensemble cast including Robin Givens (Head of State and Boomerang), Richard T. Jones (The Wood and Twisted), Salli Richardson Whitfield (Antwone Fisher and Biker Boyz), Mari Morrow (National Security and How To Be A Player), and Loretta Devine (Crash and Women Thou Art Loosed).

3 out of 5 stars OK Rainy Day Movie.......2007-03-23

This is an OK Rainy Afternoon Movie, its obvious why it was straight to video, although you have some well known actors involved. If cussing makes you uncomfortable this movie may not be for you, and if questionable content (i.e. adultry, STD's, etc) is offensive, you may want to skip this movie. It was all in all an ok movie, but a little heavy on the female bashing, men may like that after all they generally are on the receiving end of the bashing. But if all of the above doesn't bother you, you may want to check it out if you are having a Saturday at the movie kind of day.

4 out of 5 stars Great for gathering other people thoughts.......2007-01-24

This movie is good for a younger crowd and quite educational for the very nieve person. It gives you a chance to view other people thoughts; I even enjoyed viewing the movie and talking about issues that occur with every day life with my foster children. They are over 18, but very inexperienced, I am glad I made this purchase.

1 out of 5 stars Why?.......2007-01-11

I am personally tired of all the "Women are wonderful, Men are horrible" rhetoric, sheist. This movie is a complete waste of time, and plastic used to make the DVD. Ask an honest question. If men are dogs, what are you calling his parents, in particular, his mother?
I'undi.

2 out of 5 stars This movie sucks.......2007-01-05

This movie sucks. Trench looked good in it but it sucks. I could have done something better with my time.

4 out of 5 stars Good move for a Saturday indeed.......2006-11-25

Ever wonder why so many men are the way they are. They used to be nice guys. Take this producers take on 3 men who had two timing women. Each case was different. It also includes clips of robert towsend (his is funny), flex and other men describing thier issues with women. I actually like the choice of women also. Robin and Richardson played interesting roles. Treach was cute as a man who had been played and was still in love with the woman. the directing was good and overall the film was enjoyable.

A message from Red Green

OK, SO YOU GOT A PROBLEM in that your anniversary—which you seem to recall is coming up—it's gone by. It was yesterday and you pulled a complete blank. Total amnesia. So you need help digging your way out of this `cause you are now in the deep stuff. The main thing is, don't blame yourself. It's not your fault.

WE CAN'T HELP IT—WE'RE MEN!

A lot's been written about the differences between men and women. In fact, way too much. That's why I've decided to tackle the subject on video. With help from the men of Possum Lodge (and also from my nephew Harold), I'd like to lead us to a better understanding between the various sexes. Remember, we're all in the same boat, and women are on the shore, laughing.

Red Green

Extra Stuff: Red Green's Of Cars and Men, a 71-min. bonus program that celebrates every man's first love—his car; plus a half hour of additional Red Green segments!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT GP SIDE-SPLITTING COMEDY!.......2007-05-17

This is the absolute BEST comedy show we, as a family have ever seen! Our 6 and 7 year olds love it,too. We initially saw it on the PBS network late at night, and could not believe that we had NOT seen it durring the origional airing of the show! It is simply the best ever--we can hardly wait to see the rest. Steve Smith, and the rest of the "gang" are super.

This dvd received raving reviews of a positive nature. "Might be THE funniest Red Green dvd out there"

Writer-director Ron Shelton's 1992 follow-up to the baseball comedy-drama Bull Durham involves a different sport: basketball, as played on the neighborhood hustler circuit. Woody Harrelson is Billy Hoyle, a good shooter using his white complexion to fool black players into thinking he can be stomped in easy bets. Billy's banter-filled matchup against Sidney Deane (Wesley Snipes) on a public court leads to a partnership in which Sidney becomes Billy's manager, taking the white outsider on a tour of the tougher sections of Los Angeles, where he plays homeboys for a few bucks. Inevitably, the two come apart over their innate competitiveness, a situation that has to be reevaluated after Billy gets into trouble with some underworld creditors. Meanwhile, Billy's girlfriend (Rosie Perez) sits at home preparing herself for a maybe-someday date appearance on Jeopardy. As with all of Shelton's sports-related movies (Tin Cup, his script for The Best of Times), White Men Can't Jump is less about the fine points of the game than it is the rules by which players survive it. The script is literate and crackling with wit and satire (a scene in which a politician sponsors a black-white "solidarity" game is hilarious). The actors are entirely in sync, and the scenes under and around the hoops are a thrill to watch. --Tom Keogh

Description

Billy Hoyle (Woody Harrelson) and Sidney Deane (Wesley Snipes) are an unlikely pair of basketball hustlers. They team up to con their way across the courts of Los Angeles, playing a game that's fast dangerous - and funny. Directed and written by Ron Shelton ("Bull Durham"), and co-starring the sizzling Rosie Perez, "White Men Can't Jump" is a slam dunk, high-flying comedy hit!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars White Man CAN Jump.......2006-07-02

I've always enjoyed Ron Shelton's films - well written and directed, and this film features Woody and Wesley in full flow. They make such an ideal couple they did Money Train right after this. But give the script and directing credit. This is a simple but well acted and crafted film. The chemistry is great. I enjoyed watching it again. Feels as fresh as it did the first time...

5 out of 5 stars Now that's how you make a film.......2005-10-27

This film has got to be one of the best I've ever seen. Right from the beginning when Billy and Sydney are first introduced to each other it is undeniably pure genius. It has many different elements to it all brilliantly done comedy, drama, romance and of course the best of them all - basketball. I love hearing the trash talking out on the courts.

3 out of 5 stars if goria didn't want da $$$$ y did she leave billy in da 1st place.......2005-08-25

this was a good movie goria was very spoiled and took advantage of billy "woody harrison" he was hustling all day 2 put food on da table and when he comes home his girlfriend says how much $ did u make instead of i miss u she left him at least 3 times n da movie and when she comes back it is for money after billy and snidy win some $ from da basketball contests i would have given this money a higher score if goria would have understand goria because she took things 2 far i no she was kind of smart of winning da game show on jeopardy but she still of have there until the end of da movie Joe Brown

3 out of 5 stars black and white is better than sugar and ice.......2005-08-25

wes snipes "snidy" and woody harrison "billy" 2 good actors made comedy history by putting on 1 of da better comedy films of 1992 everything these two did was perfect this movie was both seious and funny but more funny it was full with cool basketball moves but da movie was focused on woody harrision not being able to dunk a basketball which was funny because toward da middle of da movie he tried many times 2 dunk a ball while wesely kept on teasing him rosey peruz was good as billy's girlfriend soon 2 b wife i could fill if she would have stay with him a little while longer this movie would have been better because they been through a lot 2gether n da movie running from husters, moving from place to place n a matter of days, 2 rosy peruz "goria" winnning da jeopardy game she forgave woody if she loved him she would have stayed and never gave up on him but other than that this was 1 of woody and wes snipes best movies together n da 90s they made 3 movies together

3 out of 5 stars Shut Up Gloria.......2004-08-13

On-court scenes are entertaining, even though the Director used an excessive amount of slow-motion. Snipes and Harrelson are entertaining and believable as basketball hustlers. However, Rosie Perez pretty much killed this movie for me. I can't stand her - the way she lounges around the apartment doing nothing expecting her boyfried to support her stupid "destiny" to be on a game show, the alcoholism, the three-foot thick fake Brooklyn meets Puero Rican accent, or how she always seems to get her way by taking a seat on her boyfriend's lap. The scene where whe asks Snipes' wife for a refund is a joke. Just shoot hopes and talk trash, fellas - leave all of the "Movin' On Up" stuff for the Jeffersons.

Steve Martin's funniest three films, The Jerk, The Lonely Guy, and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, are collected in the Wild and Crazy Comedy Collection with some corny bonus material that pales in comparison to Martin's stunning comedic performances. In The Lonely Guy, Martin's dejected character wanders New York streets with his fern plant searching for a lady to love. Scenes in which Martin calls his lady from his rooftop amidst scores of other lonely guys, or jogs into a diner wearing fake, spray-on sweat, seem more slapstick with each viewing. Martin's masterpiece is The Jerk, about Navin Johnson, a white guy born a "poor black child," who sets out for the city to become somebody. Navin, with hobo rucksack in tow, takes his dad's three rules--Don't trust whitey, Lord loves a workin' man, and See a doctor and get rid of it--to an extreme, after becoming a millionaire from inventing a reading glasses apparatus. Co-starring Bernadette Peters, The Jerk's bizarre humor still feels fresh in its satirical examination of race and class. Watching Navin change from a poor black child, to a gas station attendant, to a millionaire, to a drunken egomaniac, to a homeless bum, illustrates Martin's sheer talent for character sketching. If this Wild and Crazy Comedy Collection is a cake, The Jerk is definitely the icing. --Trinie Dalton

A U.S. soldier is dead, and military lawyers Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee and Lieutenant Commander JoAnne Galloway want to know who killed him.

5 out of 5 stars ..."YOU WANT ME ON THAT WALL....YOU....NEED....ME ON THAT WALL"..........2007-05-07

....Darn good movie [DVD]...Sorkin's screen/play defines the spartan USMC discipline to perfection...for instance, when Jack Nicholson [he overshadows the entire cast of this film] berates all the non/combatant Navy JAG/attorneys trying to bring his illustrious Marine career to an abrupt end is spell/binding and cuts right to the bone [an immense scene of impact]...his bombastic and clarion call to what a Fleet Marine Force Marine [FMF] is all about is so true to all the unsuspecting civilians taking life for granted, etc...his sneering but simple, "Thank You" is all he expects...."and be on your way, my man" is totally real...99% of the American people don't know the instantanious, and grating/lethal feeling...

4 out of 5 stars memorable.......2007-03-15

This movie is very good, especially for it's memorable moments in the end. It is a nice window into the lives of our military people and how honor and obediance play into their lives.

5 out of 5 stars A Few Good Men and One GREAT Woman.......2007-03-09
