Second Sight 2 follows the critically acclaimed, highly popular miniseries Second Sight--a co-production of BBC1 and WGBH (via the latter's Mystery! program on PBS)--with three bracing, two-part thrillers challenging ordinary notions of perception and deduction. Clive Owen returns as Chief Inspector Ross Tanner, whose eyesight is failing (his doctor sounds less certain this time that Tanner will absolutely go blind), subjecting him to blurry, distorting vision and even occasional hallucinations. Unwilling to give up his job, Tanner continues to rely upon confidantes working under him in his Special Murder Unit (now called the "Special Money Unit," investigating cold crimes and unusual cases), particularly Catherine Tully (Claire Skinner), who became Tanner's "eyes" in Second Sight and is his lover in the first story here, "Hide and Seek."

Created and written by Paula Milne, Second Sight was most interesting as a study of a man who can no longer use his eyes to solve crimes and must turn to a kind of sixth sense, heightened intuition, instead. Second Sight 2 extends that idea into chilling storylines in which only Tanner can "see" what his colleagues merely look upon. "Hide and Seek" is a strong and tragic tale in which Tanner re-opens an investigation into the apparent murder of a world-class violinist. While the SMU team pokes through three possible murder scenarios, Tanner takes the extraordinary measure of building a mock-up of the victim's home within police headquarters. (Meanwhile, Catherine endures the humiliation of being found out as Tanner's secret girlfriend.) "Parasomnia" is an absolutely spooky story about a sleepwalker (who fascinates Tanner on several levels) who has no memory of crossing town in her nightdress and bashing in her fiancé's head. Finally, "The Kingdom of the Blind" finds Tanner's young son missing during an investigation into the racially charged killing of an activist. Through all of these, Owen's laser-focused, powerful performance is something special to behold. --Tom Keogh

Taut, styish, and smart, Second Sight is the rare detective thriller with a brutal poetry in its premise. Detective Chief Inspector Ross Tanner (Clive Owen) is a maverick cop and workaholic who solves crimes by putting his faith in facts he can see for himself. What more cruel irony could beset him than a slow and irreversible loss of vision? While a rare disorder attacks his cornea, causing intermittent blindness and hallucinations, Tanner conceals his problem in the pursuit of a murderer who brutally beat a 19-year-old man to death. The suspects are largely people the victim knew well, including his mother (Phoebe Nicholls) and stepfather (Stuart Wilson), the nanny (Louise Atkins) of his young sister, a gardener (Eddie Marsan) who supplied him drugs, and an uncle (Stuart Wilson again, playing twins) who has allegedly been out of the country for years but in fact has been keeping a low profile in London. Tanner faces an added strain, initially, when he is partnered with a female detective, Catherine Tully (Claire Skinner), whose reliance on intuition is the antithesis of his own methods. Nevertheless, the two make a bargain after Skinner deduces Tanner's medical troubles: she'll be his eyes if he promises to give her equal credit for apprehending the killer. Utterly engrossing, Second Sight is part of that tradition of somber crime thriller done so well on British television, from Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy to Prime Suspect. Stars Claire Skinner (Sleepy Hollow) and Clive Owen carry the load exceptionally well. Owen (Closer, Bent), who looks like a slightly more rugged version of Kevin Costner and is instantly likable onscreen, conveys Tanner's necessary conversion to a more intuitive approach to police work with great care. Owen has looked like a candidate for international stardom for a while, and Second Sight certainly reinforces that perception.

Description

This taut psychological thriller from Paula Milne (The Politician's Wife) introduces Ross Tanner (Clive Owen, Closer; Bent), a hotshot police detective who lives for the thrill of the chase—while desperate to conceal a terrifying secret: he's losing his vision. Claire Skinner (Inspector Morse; The Wingless Bird; Sleepy Hollow) co-stars as D.I. Catherine Tully, drafted into Tanner's crime unit to aid in the investigation of the apparently motiveless, brutal murder of a 19-year-old college student. As Tanner's relationship with the world becomes increasingly fragile, he learns that there is more to murder than meets the eye. Insight prevails over eyesight as he discovers that success and survival both will depend on the alchemy of all his senses. Then, Clive Owen returns as Detective Chief Inspector Ross Tanner in three new cases of Second Sight. Still afflicted with a rare and incurable eye disease, Tanner's vision is slowly dimming, yet his crime-solving senses are as sharp as ever. He's just been chosen to head the Special Murder Unit, an elite group assigned only the toughest cases. Tanner has to hone his observation skills while staying several steps ahead of his colleagues—who are unaware of his debilitating secret.

4 out of 5 stars Clive Owen is wonderful.......2007-05-16

I was pleasantly surprised at how well Clive Owen acted in this series. In some of his movies he seems a little too stiff, however, in this series he is warm and believable. This is the story of a detective on the fast track who is losing his sight. Reading the synopsis you may think that "Second Sight" is referring to being able to see into the future/past; however that is not the case. He is losing his sight due to a viral infection that is uncurable. He is unable to hide this condition from his most able coworkers (they are detectives after all), and has to lean on a few of them which is something he hates to do. This series would have been better has the intro been deleted off of it, but the show was very good and the last show of the series had a wonderful and satisfying ending.

5 out of 5 stars Great detective video with AUDIO DESCRIPTION for blind viewers.......2007-05-07

DVD or Video--This is an engrossing 2-part detective movie PBS (or BBC?)about a detective who is losing his sight after an accident. He tries to hide the fact from his police force, while solving a case. Great plot and acting.

NOTE TO AMAZON: Can Amazon Note in their product description when a DVD or Video (like Second Sight) offers DVS--Descriptive Video Service, an audio descripton option for viewers with visual impairment--low vision or blindness?
Same way you may list when a product offers CC --Closed Captioning for viewers with hearing impairment--deaf, hard of hearing, etc.

For those who have visual impairment, this DVD/video/TV movie offers the option of Descriptive Audio, a quiet voice that describes key visual scenes (e.g., "The man slips into the room and hides a key under the phone.") To use this, check SECOND SIGHT video menu for additional features. On regular TV, you click the MTS or SAP button on your TV remote and highlight MTS or SAP-- when a program has it, a subtle voice describes all the video action. The voice in no way interferes with the video voice--in fact, it helps the viewer.

My husband is blind, and this way we can both watch DVD. (If the program does not have it, clicking SAP or MTS will play classical music or Spanish translation).
I'm sighted, but I love Descriptive Audio for when I'm tired, too--I never miss a trick this way!

We urge ALL DVD/video makers to add descriptive video---PBS tv stations offer a great many programs with DV (e.g., Masterpiece Theatre, series, etc.)--some networks--NBC, CBS, ABC--must also, by law--look oline on tv schedule to see if DA or DV appears (where the initials CC, for "Closed Captions" for deaf viewers, normally appears).

5 out of 5 stars Another Clive Owen hit.......2007-02-08

Excellent in everyway-acting & storyline. I would highly recommend-British television & Owen at their best.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Surprise.......2007-01-19

Clive Owen caught my eye in Inside Man (Widescreen Edition). Ever since then I've been a fan. After checking out his movies on amazon I came across "Second Sight". It sounded pretty interesting- Clive Owen plays a police detective who is losing his sight. He has to deal with temporary blindness and hallucinations- not to mention solving the case.

I've never purchased a British television show before so I was a bit apprehensive. I was afraid I wasn't going to be able to understand some of the accents, or even the terms. Overall though, I was able to understand it very well. I can only remember one time where I rewound two or three times before giving up on that one phrase because I had no idea what they said.

Clive was fabulous. He plays the tough detective (Ross Tanner) so well, but was also able to show that he was a loving father to his son. His difficulty in accepting that he had a problem was hard to watch. Claire Skinner costars as his partner (Catherine Tully). It was interesting to watch her mind work, whether it was figuring out the crime, or noticing her partner had a problem.

I thoroughly recommend this series to anyone who loves mysteries or detective stories. Or if you're a Clive Owen fan like me. Buy "Second Sight Vol. 1 & 2". There's only four episodes total, but they are each two parts due to the length. I was sorry to see them end!

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2007-01-10

Have only watched the first two episodes so far, but am greatly enjoying the show. It is alot of fun and I enjoy seeing some recognizable British actors with smaller parts. The mysteries are in depth and not easily solved. We make bets about half way through the show to see who is right (or closest) in solving the mystery.

5 out of 5 stars Clive Owen gets the Second Sight.......2004-11-02

Clive Owen (King Arthur, Croupier, Closer) returns as Ross Tanner and this time he faces some tougher cases then the last ones. Hide and Seek, is the first two episodes involving a case that has a non-speaking little boy in which he saw the death of his mother. Tanner (Owen) must find the killer with the help of his former partners but one of them quits so Tanner has to bring in the new one. The result of the murder is a shocker. Parasomnia is the next two episodes in which Tanner has to solve a case of a brutal murder and the only suspect is a woman who seems to have been sleepwalking at the time. It's up to Tanner to solve this one, but he has problems of his own. He is suffering from bad sleeping in which he sees a figure lurking in the room in the dark and also he is going blind (hence Second Sight). Kingdom Of The Blind is the final 2 episodes in which Tanner's sings of blindness get more and more. A teacher of Tanner's son gets killed when a building blows up. Tanner's clues lead him to a blind old man. Soon Tanner is intwined in a web of games with the old man and soon his family is in jepordy as well. The end result is a shocker as well. If your a Clive Owen fan like I am then this is the ticket for you because you wont be disappointed. This was shown on PBS' Mystery.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't be better!.......2004-07-03

As a non-native English speaker I knew I would have a hard time understanding the subtle parts of the mystery without my native language subtitles. But I, for being a big Clive Owen fan, couldn't resist. Now I'm happy I did the right thing. It's worth watching Second Sight 1&2 series again and again. I liked Owen's performances in "Greenfingers" and "Close My Eyes". This role of his, Detective Chief Inspector Ross Tanner, exceeds them by far.

Each plot of the episode is excellent. What I was so intrigued with was, however, how he faces his problem, going blind. Please watch carefully from Episode 1 to 4 in order.(notes: Episode 1 is Second Sight 1, a little longer than the other three.) You'll see how his eyesight changes from "visually impaired" to "almost blind" and his emotions from struggle and confusion to living finally with the fact. DCI Tanner is not a classical hero of hard-boild story, yet he has the same guts and loneliness, with dignity, at the bottom of his heart. Very cool!

5 out of 5 stars Bloody good!.......2004-01-11

Second Sight 2 is composed of three additional 2-part Mobil Mystery Theatre episodes. The protaganist is Chief Inspector Ross Tanner (Clive Owen), a brilliant detective who conceals the fact that he has been stricken with a rare virus that is slowly blinding him. Please watch them in order for maximum impact of the character arc which means you may have to watch Second Sight first to get introduced. The series is populated by a large supporting cast, all of whom are excellent, which raises this series way above normal TV fare, yeah BBC. Episode 2 (my personal favorite)concerns the murder of a prominent musician which was witnessed by her young son. Owen is very convincing in his increasing disability and the interactions with the victim's boy. He uses his own failures as a non-custodial parent to help him solve the mystery. His lover and co-worker, Katherine Tully, leaves in the middle of this episode and a new character is added. Also, Art Malik (Hari Kumar from The Jewel in the Crown series) is featured in this one. Episode 3 finds Tanner emotionally alone, smoking and drinking heavily as he sets out to solve a bloody murder involving a Lady MacBeth kind of woman. He is visited by nocturnal hallucinations that are really scary. The final episode, The Kingdom of the Blind, features a blind villan (nice touch), examines racial hatred and killings and has Tanner finally come to grips with his own disability and his parental responsibilites. Great explosions also! On the DVD, all of these episodes are available with audio descriptions for the visually handicapped. They also tell the describe the genre of visually challenged detective and have cool features if you want to use your CD-ROM.

5 out of 5 stars A terrific police procedural/character drama.......2004-01-08

This is a smartly-written and terrifically-acted show that not only boasts good casefiles but has flawed and complex characters populating its corners. Owen's Ross Tanner is one of the most compelling protagonists from the rich tradition of British murder mystery. Although the first series with Claire Skinner as DI Tully was excellent introduction to the character, this second series builds up on the unique premise (DCI Tanner, the head of the new Special Murder Unit of the Scotland Yard, is slowly--and unbeknownst to his friends and colleagues--losing his eyesight from a rare viral disease) even better. Tanner is a tragic character but he doesn't invite our pity; his struggles, his rage, his loneliness and insights are his own, and he carries the weight of his tragedy with dignity and verve. The cases are wonderful as well--I liked the last installment of the series, "Kingdom of the Blind", particularly well, in which Tanner's interactions with his chief suspect provide us with some of the most intriguing moments in the series. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars for "Last Call".......2007-01-08

While every entry in this collection of short films has its rewards, "Last Call", the longest film here at close to a half hour, is worth the modest price of admission by itself. The best combination of ambitious writing, subtle and honest acting, and throughly realized visual storytelling here, "Last Call" brings together two damaged and mistrustful souls (played with great courage and vulnerability by Dana Dewes and Jude Ciccolella, whom many viewers will know from his continuing role in television's "24" and a memorable sequence in "Sin City") in a late night blue collar bar in Queens. Dewes' Lanie is a part time singer who says she wants to pose for Playboy; Ciccolella's Ross is an often silent, scarred presence in his brother's bar who underplays his violent past. They act out a complicated after hours emotional dance, with feints of bravado followed by retreat behind various poses, and we wonder if they'll drive one another off, or if their orbits will decay and the powerfully evident need each has will bring them together. The toughness of the dialogue is pierced by moments of searing honesty, and the street guises could wear thin in a hurry if the actors let up for a moment. Director Robert Bailey's long theater background serves him well here - in a film that dares to stand or fall on the performances, he gets brilliant work out of both actors, who are compellng throughout. Bailey uses the single-room bar setting like a stage, but one where his camera is a missing third character - it follows the action into every corner of the bar in rhythmic counterpoint to Ross and Lanie's give and take. Medium distance shots emphasize the surging physicality of the actors, and the closeups keep us from missing even one nuance of feeling as it flickers across their faces. The director's naming of Kieslowski as an influence is no idle claim; like the Polish master, Bailey lets us watch Dewes and Ciccolella as they listen to each other, often cutting away from the speaker in over the shoulder shots. While he doesn't use ambient sound as variously, Bailey uses silence with great daring, and the few examples of music stand out. This is rich visual storytelling, where all the elements are in balance and each pulls its weight. We can't help caring about the characters and their fate, and at the end of the half hour we know we've been somewhere. All of these people deserve to work at greater length - see them now before they make the great feature films that are clearly in them.
