One of the most engaging features from 20th Century Fox's Holmes series, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is also of historical interest as it based on a hugely popular, early 20th century stage play written by and starring William Gillette. Basil Rathbone cuts a fine figure as the lean, hawkish Great Detective, drawn into a complicated conspiracy by fiendish Dr. Moriarty (George Zucco) to distract Holmes while quietly preparing to steal the Crown Jewels. Nigel Bruce is on board as a buffoonish Dr. Watson, and British-born Ida Lupino is very good, and quite gorgeous, as a young woman who may be the target of a family curse. True-blue Sherlockians know that very little of Gillette's tale, and next to nothing about Zucco's or Bruce's performances, have anything to do with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's sacred canon. Still, this is a handsome production to enjoy on its own terms. --Tom Keogh
Description
The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes

Set in the Victorian Age and regarded by many as the finest of the fourteen films in the Sherlock Holmes/Basil Rathbone series, `The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' was originally released in 1939 by Twentieth Century-Fox.

Professor Moriarty (George Zucco) has at long last been brought to trial for murder, but the `Napoleon of Crime' is acquitted after the court finds a lack of sufficient evidence. Moriarty wastes no time in plotting his next crime, but in order to be successful he must divert the attention of the Great Detective.

Intimidating, anonymous letters sent to young socialite Ann Brandon (Ida Lupino) ; the murder of Miss Brandon's brother; and threats to the security of a priceless gem consume the attention of Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) and his companion Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce).

Are these mysterious occurrences simply erroneous distractions? Are they clues to a case irrelevant to the exploits of the evil Professor Moriarty? Or, are these portents of disaster inexorably linked to the master criminal's plan to commit a crime that will shake the very foundation of the British Empire? It is for Holmes and Watson to sort out these mysteries and, hopefully, eliminate the menace of Professor Moriarty.

Jeremy Brett's portrayal of Sherlock Holmes is perhaps the best filmed version of Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective, showcasing Holmes's dazzling brilliance without ignoring his unnerving intensity or drug dependencies. First aired on Britain's Granada Television in 1984, the series offered perfect casting (David Burke, replaced later in the run by Edward Hardwicke, played Dr. Watson as Holmes's sturdy companion and chronicler rather than as a buffoon), marvelous period music by Patrick Gowers, and a running time of almost an hour per story, which allowed superior detail and faithfulness to the original source.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes marked the beginning of the long-running series. Highlights of these 13 episodes include "A Scandal in Bohemia," which introduces Irene Adler (Gayle Hunnicutt), whom Holmes uncharacteristically describes as having "a face a man might die for"; the chilling locked-room mystery "The Speckled Band"; the introduction of Sherlock's brother Mycroft (Charles Gray) in "The Greek Interpreter"; and "The Final Problem," in which Holmes confronts his arch-enemy Professor Moriarty (Eric Porter) at Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland. The five-disc boxed set is a great bargain compared to previous VHS releases, although bonus features are limited to English subtitles and galleries of Sidney Paget's famous illustrations. The series would continue on Granada with The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, and The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes as well as the stand-alone treatments of The Sign of Four and The Hound of the Baskervilles. --David Horiuchi

For those fans of the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories, this is the most in depth retelling to date. The detail, breadth of scope in production and downright excellent acting (Jeremy Brett as Sherlock), you will be taken to another time with a slow pace and delightful mystery. Brett is the consumate Holmes with a character bordering on the obsessive. Lighting and music are equally fitting. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Discovering a New Sherlock Holmes.......2007-04-02

My husband is an avid fan of Sherlock Holmes although I can usually take or leave Sherlock films, especially the slow moving black and white films featuring Basil Rathbone. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this boxed set collection featuring Jeremy Brett and David Burk as Holmes and Watson. The stories were intriguing and the settings were impressive. I actually stayed awake through the entire film.

5 out of 5 stars Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.......2007-06-21

Based on a stage play and straying far from the Arthur Conan Doyle canon, Werker's "Holmes" nevertheless makes for thrilling entertainment, in no small part because it reunites Rathbone and co-star Nigel Bruce, playing the oafish Dr. Watson, from their first outing in "Hound of the Baskervilles." The young Lupino (who'd go on to direct movies) is radiant as a young beauty plagued by an ancient family curse--a ruse concocted, of course, by Zucco's deliciously malevolent Moriarty. It doesn't take a master logician to deduce that "Holmes" is a first-rate whodunit.

4 out of 5 stars Rathbone is the Best Sherlock.......2007-06-12

The quintessential movie Sherlock Holmes can be none other than Basil Rathbone. Forget that the movies (with the exception of the first two produced by Paramount, of which this is one) update Holmes to the twentieth century. The fun lingers. And of course, Nigel Bruce is a delight, even though he is NOT the Watson of Doyle's original work. But that Watson was insipid, only a faint ghost telling a fascinating story. Since Bruce's interpretation Dr. Watson has become, at least in later films and television adaptations, almost as important as Holmes himself, something that would probably have Sir Arthur turning over in his grave.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Rathbone and Bruce magic........2006-03-22

Thoroughly enjoyed this great movie. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce make it a wonderful experience, even for those who are not fanatical fans of Sherlock Holmes.

5 out of 5 stars Holmes as usual!.......2006-03-22

This DVD arrived within a few days in good condition. My husband has watched it twice already (he's a REAL Basil-Rathbone-as-Holmes fan) and is very pleased at being able to get this title. We now have all the Rathbone titles except "The Scarlet Claw" (on order), and these movies will be watched over and over.

The movie is as good as all the other Rathbone "Holmeses," and still relevant to human behavior, even though the world has moved on from the time period they cover. Thank you, Amazon, for making this movie available.

5 out of 5 stars The best place to get started with film's Sherlock Holmes........2005-04-12

OK. What was in the water back in 1939? Was there a conspiracy to make, like, a HUNDRED movies that would last for all time?

Gone With The Wind, Gunga Din, Wizard of Oz, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington...there's like two dozen more that you'd know by name...
...and THIS was made then TOO?

Inconceivable!

Anyways, this film is a great place to get to know Sherlock Holmes by way of Basil Rathbone. I can't imagine anyone else in the role (although others honestly have done a fine job) and when I read the novels, I 'see' him.

I love the interplay between Holmes and Nigel Bruce's Dr. Watson...they simply have the parts nailed. Nailed, nailed, nailed.

The breathless story involves, among other things, Professor Moriarty (of course), a diabolical nefarious "crime of the century", a mysterious woman, men of dubious intentions, a smattering of murders, and trying to find a fiddle note that irritates houseflies.

This is one of those movies that will have you saying, after it's over, "they sure don't make 'em like they used to!"

After seeing this, I went out and bought ALL of the remaining, lovingly remastered Rathbone/Bruce films, and plan on spending a few lazy Sunday afternoons with Mr. Holmes.

One of the most popular of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, "The Blue Carbuncle" is given exciting treatment in this Granada Television adaptation, featuring Jeremy Brett and David Burke in definitive performances as the famous detective and his ally and chronicler, Dr. Watson. The story concerns the disappearance of a gem called the Blue Carbuncle, which is linked to a terrible history of murders, suicides, attacks, and robberies. The jewel's trail leads Holmes all over wintry London and to a decision that stuns Watson in its legal and ethical implications. Tightly woven and cleverly adapted from the page, "The Blue Carbuncle" is a worthy telling of a classic tale.

Just as Holmes is lamenting the state of his investigation practice, a letter arrives from a Violet Hunter (Natasha Richardson), who seeks advice on whether to accept a position as governess at the Copper Beeches, the home of a genuine oddball named Jephro Rucastle (Joss Ackland) and his equally strange family. This fine adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's clever mystery "The Copper Beeches" is absolutely engrossing, and as usual Brett's performance as the famed detective is flawless and true to Doyle's original vision. Burke does his typically stellar work as Watson, and the addition of one great veteran (Ackland) and one talented then-newcomer (Richardson) to the cast is a real treat. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars We love it!.......2006-04-06

Every once in a while, an actor comes along who not only plays the role of Sherlock Holmes, but actually redefines the role. In 1984, veteran actor Jeremy Brett (1933-95) actually did it yet again! And now, these wonderful Granada Television episodes are available on DVD.

This wonderful DVD has two of the 55 minute episodes. My family and I loved this DVD, and think that any fan of Sherlock Holmes, or just plain fan of mysteries, will love it, too! (By the way, if you like Jeremy Brett, you can see him in an entirely different role in My Fair Lady (1964) as Freddie Eynsford-Hill!)

The following episodes are included on this DVD:

The Blue Carbuncle - Series 1, episode 7 (June 5, 1984) - When Police Commissionaire Peterson comes to Holmes with the mystery of an old hat and a plucked goose that he found, Holmes actually begins to look for clues. But, when the goose is found to contain a highly-valuable stolen gemstone, Holmes decides to get to the very bottom of this mystery.

The Copper Beeches - Series 2, episode 1 (August 25, 1985) - Miss Violet Hunter is unsure as to whether or not to take a high-paying job as a governess, as the prospective employer has some very peculiar conditions. Taking the job, things go from strange to stranger, and she calls on Holmes for help. What is going on here, and what is the strange employer up to?

+++++

This DVD presents two of the 50 minute Sherlock Holmes' episodes that had Jeremy Brett as Sherlock and David Burke as Dr. Watson. Each episode is based on a story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 to 1930) who wrote 56 short stories and 4 novels about Sherlock Holmes.

(1) The Blue Carbuncle (12 scenes; based on the 1892 story).

A diamond with a "sinister history" is stolen from a wealthy widow. Sherlock discovers it in a most unlikely place and has to figure out who put it there.

(2) The Copper Beeches (10 scenes; based on the 1892 story).

An oddball employer asks a would-be female employee to accept some mysterious conditions before being hired for a lucrative job in a mansion called "The Copper Beeches." The quotation from Sherlock that is the title of this review is from this episode.

Brett (who made 41 Sherlock Holmes' dramas between 1984 and 1994) is in top-form in these two episodes since they were made before the time of his health problems. He captures the essence of the famous gumshoe in his performances.

The costumes, background music, and cinematography are quite well done. In my case, I found the picture quality and sound quality of this DVD to be practically perfect.

Finally, this DVD has 3 extras. I found these interesting. Newcomers to the series should especially enjoy them.

In conclusion, be sure to view this DVD and see why it won a 1988 Swedish Academy of Detection Award!!

4 out of 5 stars Brett Rules!!.......2002-07-23

The sound on MPIýs Sherlock Holmes DVDs has improved since volume one. Otherwise, they remain the same. The sharp picture highlights the weaknesses of the original 16mm photography, and the extras are laughable. But, here we get two of the best episodes in this phenomenal series, in a presentation that far outshines their previous life on VHS. Who could ask for anything more?

Iýve always loved ýThe Copper Beeches.ý Its gothic setting and the hammy performance of Joss Ackland as the mysterious employer help to overcome the weaknesses in Conan Doyleýs plot, while ýThe Blue Carbuncleý showcases the methods of Sherlock Holmes better than any other adventure.

The casting, as usual, couldnýt be better. A young Natasha Richardson joins Ackland in ýThe Copper Beeches,ý and the masterful Jeremy Brett triumphs, yet again, as Sherlock Holmes.

We can only hope that MPI will release the entire series on DVD. I, for one, will buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2002-06-28

Any of the discs in "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" series are worth buying just for Jeremy Brett's performance as Holmes. Even though there are other actors whom I adore in the role, I consider it to be impossible for anyone to play the character as good as Brett did. He simply WAS Sherlock Holmes.

Both of the episodes on this disc are very well done. "The Blue Carbuncle" is particularly good. The quality of the disc is not perfect but it is good. I would recommend this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Getting into the spirit of the role.......2002-05-05

These early shows from Jeremy Brett's career of portrayal of the famous detective are such a joy to behold.

One of the most endearing characteristics of these shows has been the attention which has been paid to keeping the story as close as possible to the original Conan Doyle story. To that extent, these particular productions are the ultimate in depiction of Sherlock Holmes and one cannot see how anyone would even attempt to remake them with another actor in the major role.

Brett always threw himself into Holmes, playing him with such zeal, style and panache. In these two stories he very much continues to play the character straight as it were acting out the story true to the word. True to his interpretation to the spirit would come later.

David Burke offers an intelligent interpretation of Watson, trying to throw off the categorisation of Watson as a well meaning buffoon which resulted from the Rathbone years.

As others have pointed out these are two great stories, the second notable for the actors involved. From my point of view the attention to detail is marvellous, in the settings and furnishings. Unlike Poirot however, these stories do not tire with the background. The Victorians were much more adventuresome in the extent of their cultural choices than the society portrayed in Agatha Christie's novels.

This is one set that belongs in a DVD library of good detective dramas together with that other beautifully produced series, 'Inspector Morse'.

In "The Crooked Man," Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) fetches Dr. John Watson (David Burke) on an urgent mission: Colonel James Barclay (Denys Hawthorne) has been found dead in his home, with his comatose wife (Lisa Daniely) beside him. While Holmes and Watson work to clear the widow's name of any suspicion, a weird, badly stooped man (Norman Jones) holds onto the secret of the Barclays' misfortune. This episode in the long-running Granada Television series is a fascinating puzzle all around, highlighted by a long flashback into a grim tale of treachery and revenge.

One of the strongest entries in the series, "The Speckled Band" finds distraught Helen Stoner (Rosalyn Landor) coming to Holmes and Watson in fear for her life since announcing her betrothal. The reason: Helen's sister Julia (Denise Armon) died mysteriously and in apparent terror in her bedroom on the night before her own wedding, and her final words were a strange reference to a "speckled band." This episode has it all: a damsel in distress, a considerable villain, lots of suspense, and a solution worth waiting for. Brett and Burke are at the top of their game as Doyle's dynamic duo; this story was, in fact, Doyle's personal favorite from the Holmes canon. --Tom Keogh

His sleuthing leads him to a "crooked man," who is "an old acquaintance" of the colonel's wife. Be sure to see the fantastic acting by Norman Jones who plays the crooked man.

(2) "The Speckled Band" (10 scenes; based on the 1892 story).

A woman asks Sherlock to investigate the mysterious past death of her sister. "Holmes the meddler" discovers that the woman's life may be in jeopardy. The quotation by Sherlock that titles this review is found in this episode.

Brett (who made 41 Sherlock Holmes' dramas between 1984 and 1994) is in top-form in these two episodes since they were made before the time of his health problems. He captures the essence of the famous gumshoe in his performances.

The costumes, background music, and cinematography are quite well done. In my case, I found the picture quality and acoustic quality of this DVD to be practically perfect.

Finally, this DVD has 3 extras. I found these interesting. Newcomers to the series should especially enjoy them.

In conclusion, be sure to view this DVD and see why it won a 1988 Swedish Academy of Detection Award!!

(1983; 110 min; British drama; made for TV; full screen)

5 out of 5 stars Sherlock Holmes has returned!.......2002-04-11

Volume 2 of MPI's great series of mysteries from Granada TV/PBS is as enjoyable as its predecessor. In "The Crooked Man", a distinguished army colonel is found dead, and his unconscious wife is the primary suspect. His regiment is unaware of the colonel's treachery in his younger days and that a man he left for dead due to it is back for revenge. But is the man with the crooked back guilty? In "The Speckled Band" the stepdaughter of a renowned but cruel doctor is about to be married and escape her unhappy home fears for her life when history repeats itself and the events that lead to her sister's death occur again. Jeremy Brett and David Burke as Holmes and Watson are on the case!

5 out of 5 stars A great record of a definitive performer.......2002-04-05

This, the second volume of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes the television series, is a welcome addition to the shelves of DVD sellers.

As the number of television shows increases at very high rates it is comforting to know that shows such as this as preserved for posterity on DVD.

AS the number of DVDs increases now that DVD player ownership has expanded to cover over 25% of US households and the number is poised to double by the end of the 2002 holiday season, the range of quality and reproduction of DVDs is also growing.

This does mean that less profitable ventures such as the Sherlock Holmes series seem doomed to limited treatments during transfer rather than get the full scale upgrading purists would prefer. For myself I would certainly prefer more but I am happy to be able to own these DVDs and watch them repeatedly.

Jeremy Brett, throught his years of portraying Holmes certainly carved out his reputation as being the ultimate Holmes. In these two early episodes one sees the stirrings of a determination by the actor to make the character his own.

There are so many aspects to these shows that it is difficult to know where to start. One of the reasons why the show developed it's avid following in my view is the attention paid to the original stories not only in the detail of portrayal but in observing the spirit of them. David Burke does excellent service in portraying Watson as an intelligent though somewhat limited colleague and pupil of the genius master and an individual in his own right who tries not to be overshadowed. This is a welcome rebuttal to the image of Watson as the buffoon who graced our screens for many years.

The two stories contained in this volume, Crooked Man and Speckled Band are both concerned with familial killings. In the first a husband's betrayal of his wife's true love many years ago results in his death and in the second a stepfather's greed for a legacy turns to murder. Both solid stories their depiction in 55 minute episodes highlights the superb editing skills used to bring them to the screen. Unlike many other period dramas the Homes series cuts across English class barrier lines while at the same time highlights the clear division between and within those classes.

All in all a little treasure which leads the viewer waiting on the edge of their seat for the next volume to arrive.

5 out of 5 stars Brett = Holmes.......2002-01-23

Jeremy Brett is superb has Holmes. I think even Basil Rathbone would have to admit this (if he were still with us). The Crooked Man is a little slow with not must mystery but the acting is excellent. The Speckled Band is true to form. Not as many episodes as the first collection but oh well.

"A Scandal in Bohemia"
The very first Sherlock Holmes short story (following the detective's introduction in the novels A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of the Four) was also the first Granada Television production in the long-running Holmes series featuring Jeremy Brett's definitive performance as the famous sleuth. No deerstalker cap, cape, curved meerschaum pipe, or Basil Rathbone mannerisms for this Holmes: Brett's portrayal went straight to the heart of the character Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created, with all the manic-depressive, coldly clinical, drug-dependent, and unnervingly focused brilliance intact. Just as on-the-money is David Burke's Dr. John Watson, who is hardly the loyal puppy of widespread assumption but rather a dedicated ally and determined chronicler of the publicity-wary Holmes. "A Scandal in Bohemia," ironically, is one of the few instances of Holmes being bested by an equally intelligent adversary--an actress by the name of Irene Adler (Gayle Hunnicutt), who has threatened to reveal damaging evidence of her own affair with the king of Bohemia (Wolf Kahler), a ridiculous pseudonym invented by Watson to protect the real royal personage in trouble. It's Holmes to the rescue, going undercover in disguise to take away the blackmailer's trump, though it's he whose head will ultimately be turned by the extraordinary Irene. The cast is wonderful (meet Rosalie Williams as Baker Street housekeeper Mrs. Hudson), and the drama is great fun. (For a contemporary movie reinvention of this story, check out the 1998 feature Zero Effect, starring Bill Pullman as a whacked-out variation on Holmes, Ben Stiller as his long-suffering Watson, and Kim Dickens as an updated Irene.) --Tom Keogh

"The Dancing Men"
What is the meaning of the stick figures that appear scrawled one day on the exterior wall of a Northfolk manor? Why do they so terribly upset the American wife (Betsy Brantley) of the gentleman (Tenniel Evans) who lives there? The case proves one of the most tantalizing for Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) and his ally and chronicler, Dr. Watson (David Burke). Then it proves among the gravest of Holmes's career when murder enters the picture and the distraught woman is charged with the crime. This is one of those stories from the Holmes canon that practically invites an adaptation; Sherlockians will enjoy seeing the oddly disturbing "dancing men" on screen, while newcomers to Holmes will find the tale particularly compelling. As always, Brett remains the definitive Holmes. --Tom Keogh

"The Naval Treaty"
An old schoolmate of Dr. Watson's, Percy Phelps (David Gwillim), has asked the longtime friend of Sherlock Holmes to intercede on his behalf with the famous detective. Phelps, a member of the Foreign Office, has stolen a copy of a naval treaty with serious international consequences, but the document has been missing for two months. His nerves shattered from worry, Phelps is under the care of his fiancée (Alison Skilbeck), but so far the treaty has not surfaced. Holmes (Jeremy Brett), aided by Watson (David Burke), agrees to take the case, which is handsomely adapted in this episode from the Granada Television series. As usual, Brett is the most fascinating, most complex, and truest of the many Holmes portrayals in film and TV history, Burke is solid as the good doctor, and Rosalie Williams is delightful in her fleeting appearance as the Baker Street housekeeper, Mrs. Hudson. --Tom Keogh

"The Solitary Cyclist"
Sherlock Holmes (the incomparable Jeremy Brett) is unhappily interrupted during a major investigation by the appearance at Baker Street of a young, regal-looking woman named Violet Smith (Barbara Wilshere). Frightened for her safety, Smith tells the busy sleuth and his friend Dr. Watson (David Burke) of her recent life since being left penniless. Employed as a music teacher in the Charlington home of one Bob Carruthers (John Castle)--a man who, along with a quite dangerous and "hideous" fellow named Woodley (Michael Siberry)--knew her late father in South Africa, Smith has lately been harassed by Woodley and followed on bicycle by a mysterious, bearded fellow. Watson is dispatched to look into the matter, but the mystery only deepens and darkens even after the Master finally arrives. One of the strongest episodes in the long-running Holmes series from Granada Television, "The Solitary Cyclist" never lets up its taut suspense. Brett and Burke are magnificent, as always, but even the most loyal fans are taken aback by the rare sight of Holmes throwing punches, as he does in a boxing duel with the beastly Woodley. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars The Best!.......2007-04-13

In one of my classes at college, our professor made us watch a Sherlock Holmes episode the first day. As a rule, I prefer to read stories as opposed to watching them on TV because usually the TV versions are not as good as the books from which they are derived. However, after watching Jeremy Brett's portrayal of the legendary slueth, I was well satisfied with the excellent job of both the actors and the producers in bringing these extrordinary tales to life. I have since watched every episode, and I can say with confidence that Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes is the best I have ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars There's no better version of the Sherlock Holmes stories.......2007-03-24

I've loved these since I first saw them on television decades ago- Brett delivers, without a doubt, the truest, and most accurate picture of Holmes at Conan Doyle wrote him. Brett's Holmes is detached from humanity- uninterested in other peopel, except insofar as they can provide him with an intellectual challaneg. For him, the case is the thing; if he solves a mystery, he considers himself to have succeeded- even if the client happens to die along the way.

The people and places depicted in this series may not be terribly true to history, but they are very true to Conan Doyle's depiction of the age, and thus very satisfying to any serious Holmsian. The rigid societal roles, the predictable behavior, the overdone stereotypes- this is the world of Sherlock Holmes, where all can be induced from a few clues, where invalids take to divans and fan themselves, and where the criminal always returns to the scene of the crime. If you're Holmes fan- and you must be, to have read this far- you'll absolultley love this series.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Homes.......2006-11-04

A Scandal in Bohemia is my favorite Holmes story. I bought this to get it but found the other three stories just as well done. The people that write the scripts for this series all do a formindable job and the casting as is usual for English TV is excellent. Would that American TV would learn to cast as well. But most of the actors and actresses on American TV never learned their craft. You're lucky if one of two members of a cast are real pros while in England even the small roles are well done.

HI,
This version of the DVD has helped me to recollect the memories of the old days when I used to view Holmes series in my home TV duiring my childhood. Good and fresh memory.

But I expected a better quality DVD. This one tht have reached me sometimes stops for a fraction of a second and it srarts automatically. I expected a flawless and superior quality. Although I am returning it back but Amazon should take care of this in future.
Thanks,
Sanjib

1 out of 5 stars Technical problems with two copies of this DVD.......2005-11-01

This DVD appears to be encrypted or mastered in a slightly unusual way. My DVD player could not play it, nor could any of the normal DVD players on my computers play it. This was true of two copies of this DVD that I bought.

Eventually I discovered that VLC (VideoLan Client) on the Mac could play it and we did get to see it in the end. The episodes are good, but I agree with most of the other reviewers in saying that the quality of the DVD is far below what is expected. There are sound problems on "The Naval Treaty" and a piece of dirt appeared to get caught in the projector's film gate at one stage during one of the episodes!

In "The Resident Patient," Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) and Dr. Watson (David Burke) are approached by Dr. Percy Trevelyan (Nicholas Clay), who has been set up in an office by a man named Blessington (Patrick Newell) in exchange for free medical care. Despite several successful years of this arrangement, Blessington is found hanging in his room. This episode from the long-running Granada Television series has the incomparable Brett enact one of Holmes's most dramatic and complex deductions. A terrific show, from the earliest and perhaps best years of the series.

"The Red-Headed League" is based on a truly popular tale from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes canon. The story has a pawnbroker named Wilson (John Woodnutt) hearing from an assistant about a wealthy foundation, the Red-Headed League, dedicated to the "propagation and spread of... redheads as well as [to] their maintenance." Good fun all around, especially for Holmes fans who would enjoy seeing this unique story well adapted for the screen.

In 1893 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's weariness with his most famous creation, Sherlock Holmes, led him to write "The Final Problem." The plan was to bring Holmes face to face with his most cunning and vile adversary, Professor Moriarty (Eric Porter), in a showdown that would bring a graceful and ennobling close to the Holmes saga. In time, Doyle allowed popular pressure to change his mind, and he brought back the sleuth, but this engrossing adaptation truly seems like Holmes's last bow and gives no hint of things to come. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars "A Mastermind has been at Work".......2005-06-28

+++++

This DVD presents three of the 50 minute Sherlock Holmes' episodes that had Jeremy Brett as Sherlock and David Burke as Dr. Watson. Each episode is based on a story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 to 1930) who wrote 56 short stories and 4 novels about Sherlock Holmes.

(1) "The Resident Patient" (12 scenes; based on the 1893 story).

A wealthy man in "a state of mortal dread" sets up a practice for a struggling doctor in his home. Later, the wealthy man is found dead in his home. Was it suicide or murder? Sherlock investigates.

(2) "The Red-Headed League" (12 scenes; based on the 1891 story).

A businessman gets a second lucrative job because he satisfies the condition for employment: he has red hair. An episode that's hilarious at first (check out Sherlock and Watson laughing uncontrollably) but later turns more sinister. The quotation by Sherlock that is the title of this review comes from this episode.

(3) "The Final Problem" (12 scenes; based on the 1893 story).

What can I say about this riveting episode? There's a unique "meeting of masterminds" at 221B Baker Street. Check out the thrilling "Final Solution" at the end of this episode that may spell the end of Sherlock. Eric Porter as Professor Moriarty does a fantastic job in this role. A must-see for all Sherlock Holmes' fans.

Brett (who made 41 Sherlock Holmes' dramas between 1984 and 1994) is in top-form in these episodes since they were made before the time of his health problems. He captures the essence of the famous gumshoe in his performances.

The costumes, background music, and especially cinematography are quite well done. In my case, I found the picture quality and sound quality for this DVD to be almost perfect.

Finally, this DVD has 3 extras. I found these interesting. Newcomers to the series should especially enjoy them.

In conclusion, be sure to view this DVD and see why it won a 1988 Swedish Academy of Detection Award!!

5 out of 5 stars We love it!.......2004-08-25

Every once in a while, an actor comes along who not only plays the role of Sherlock Holmes, but actually redefines the role. In 1984, veteran actor Jeremy Brett (1933-95) actually did it yet again! And now, these wonderful Granada Television episodes are available on DVD.

This wonderful DVD has no less than three of the 55 minute episodes!

The Resident Patient - Series 2, episode 4 (September 15, 1985) - One day, a young doctor comes seeking Holmes' advice for a patient. The patient is mortally afraid of intruders, but can Sherlock find out why before it is too late?

The Red Headed League - Series 2, episode 5 (September 22, 1985) - When pawnbroker Jabez Wilson comes to Holmes and Watson with the strange tale of a league of red-headed men that never was, he expects to be laughed at. But, only Holmes can see that this strange "prank" was only the cover on a deeper mystery

The Final Problem - Series 2, episode 6 (September 29, 1985) - When Holmes foils a plot to steal the Mona Lisa from the Louvre, he finds that he has crossed the path of the "Napoleon of Crime" Professor Moriarty once too often. Will Holmes survive or will this be his final problem? [Note: this episode does include a scene that has a naked woman scene from the back.]

2 out of 5 stars hmmm.......2003-06-30

The shows were wonderful. Good suspense and I love Jeremy Brett--the best Sherlock out there. But in 'The Final Problem' they had a nude "art" scene with a woman. Come on, this is just not right, why would they ruin the movie with that?!
If they would have left out the "art" they movie would be a 5 star, and it would have been just fine.

5 out of 5 stars Fell In Love With This Series On A&E.......2003-05-23

Have always enjoyed this series - great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Gem.......2002-11-05

The best Holmes and 3 shows. In the last three you get introduced to Moriarity and see Holmes death(maybe). It was decent quality for a almost twenty year old show. My only problem with the series is that there are only 2-3 episodeds per disc and the bonus section is pretty bare. I would like to see some improvement for the casebook of sherlock holmes but I still cannot wait.

This is a good version (one of many good versions) of Hound of the Baskervilles, with fine atmosphere and Victorian-looking sets. It's nice to have yet another version. But I find it more than a little disconcerting to hear Holmes, Watson and the other British people speaking Russian. Of course if you speak fluent Russian or love subtitles, then this is the dvd for you.
