Following Albert Finney's quirky and compelling performance as Agatha Christie's Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, in 1974's Murder on the Orient Express, Peter Ustinov capably took over the role in this 1978 adaptation of Christie's river-bound whodunit. While on a pleasure cruise along the Nile with a taciturn companion (David Niven), Poirot slips into action following the murder of a much-despised heiress (Lois Chiles). There's no shortage of suspects... until, that is, they also start dying off, obfuscating the investigation by suggesting that several killers may be at work. With a disciplined screenplay by Anthony Shaffer, the film is solid enough (certainly better than its 1981 follow-up, Evil Under the Sun) and is graced immeasurably by a glittery cast including Bette Davis, Maggie Smith, Mia Farrow, Olivia Hussey, Jack Warden, and Angela Lansbury. Directed with customary efficiency by John Guillermin (King Kong, The Towering Inferno). --Tom Keogh

Death on the Nile.......2007-06-08
An engrossing story, played out by an excellent cast. Location and scenery are a big plus. I love this movie.
another Renoir Classic.......2007-05-14
If you enjoyed Murder on the Orient express, here is the partner to that.
Another Classic Mystery for those great Mystery Buffs.
A Disturbing But Effective Mystery.......2007-01-20
First question: Did they make a mistake casting Peter Ustinov for Hercule Poirot? His interpretation (let alone appearance) is quite different from Albert Finney's, but I enjoy him in the role, especially by the end of the movies he's in.
Mia Farrow gives a disturbing portrayal of a woman deserted by her lover for a heirress. The scenery of this picture is great. Angela Lansbury has a great cameo in this movie, and David Niven makes a great Col. Hastings.
Okay, this is the end of it. I won't reveal that the murderer really is . . .
Great acting, who-dunn-it keeps you guessing.......2007-01-18
What a great movie! I remember watching it as a kid and had to see it again! Just gets better with time! All star cast with such theatrical acting! If you've never seen the movie before, you'd never guess who dunn it! They just don't make movies like this today. This stimulates the mind without all the gore. Very comical, too. Highly recommended.
Agatha Christie's classics.......2007-01-12
Peter Ustinov again doing a superb job as Hercule Poirot although far from Miss Christie's description of Poirot. Great supporting cast in one of AC's great stories. Well written, well acted, well photographed. Mystery fun for everyone.

Death on the Nile
Following Albert Finney's quirky and compelling performance as Agatha Christie's Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, in 1974's Murder on the Orient Express, Peter Ustinov capably took over the role in this 1978 adaptation of Christie's river-bound whodunit. There's no shortage of suspects... until, that is, they also start dying off, obfuscating the investigation by suggesting that several killers may be at work. With a disciplined screenplay by Anthony Shaffer, the film is solid enough and is graced immeasurably by a glittery cast including Bette Davis, Maggie Smith, Mia Farrow, Olivia Hussey, Jack Warden, and Angela Lansbury. Directed with customary efficiency by John Guillermin (King Kong, The Towering Inferno). --Tom Keogh
Evil Under the Sun
Mostly for Poirot completists and admirers of then-trendy, all-star ensemble casts from the 1970s and early '80s, Evil Under the Sun finds Peter Ustinov in his second outing as Agatha Christie's famous Belgian detective (three years after 1978's Death on the Nile). As the title promises, the action this time takes place on an Adriatic island (though Christie fans will surely balk at the switch from the novel's setting on the English coast), where a famous stage star (Diana Rigg) is murdered, and the list of likely suspects is unusually high. The parade of legendary performers--Roddy McDowall, James Mason, Sylvia Miles, Maggie Smith, Jane Birkin--plus Ustinov's energetic performance keep things hopping. But Anthony Shaffer's lazy screenplay and director Guy Hamilton's superficial approach nudge everything (action, characters, tone) toward campy, near-parody, with bitchy sniping, tacky costumes, and an obligatory soundtrack of Cole Porter tunes. It's only in the last lap that the film transcends such obviousness and finds its way back to the glories of detective fiction. --Tom Keogh
The Mirror Crack'd
Angela Lansbury does the honors as Agatha Christie's determined sleuth, Miss Marple, in this adaptation of Christie's novel. A washed-up movie star (Elizabeth Taylor) is attempting to make a comeback but is driven to distraction by a mysterious event from her past. Also problematic for Taylor's struggling actress is a series of murders occurring with clockwork regularity in the quiet, 1950s English village where a film is being produced--killings that are all somehow connected to her. Despite the British backdrop, most of the suspects, including Rock Hudson, Kim Novak, and Tony Curtis, are American in this 1980 feature directed by Guy Hamilton (Evil Under the Sun). (At least Miss Marple's nephew, the redoubtable Inspector Craddock, is played by Edward Fox.) The bad news: this is a curiously flat, monotonous film, with a mystery hook that, sad to say, is among Christie's more familiar and predictable. Hamilton doesn't demand much of his largely ornamental cast, and they don't volunteer much to fill the void. Still, fans of Miss Marple and Christie, especially those with a burning hunger to see every film or television program based on the books, will want to check it out. --Tom Keogh

Timeless classics.......2007-05-13
I was so delighted to find these wonderful Agatha Christie mysteries out on DVD finally I've seen them all a few times but the stories are still intriguing. It's also a delight to see many of the old stars in their glory days and some of today's stars in their beginning roles. I love a movie that can be watched over and over again and not lose its freshness. These movies definitely fit that category.
Agatha Christie.......2007-05-07
Being a big fan of Agatha Christie and Peter Ustinov, i was not disappointed in the movie versions. Well worth the price to see them.
Great movies.......2007-05-07
I have looked at every place that rents movies for these titles. I love Death on teh Nile and Evil Under the Sun. But, I could never find them. Now I can watch them as much as I want. I have to laugh at the how Death on the Nile, changes the geography of Egypt. To think that you could be in Luxor in the morning and Abu Simbel before sunset can only be movie magic. But, I loved it anyway.
As good as excellent and better than brilliant........2006-05-05
This only concerns "Death on the Nile".
This blockbusting film adapted from Agatha Christie's novel is the very archetype and acme of her detective stories, at least those using the services of the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot from Brussels. She builds up a closed set of people who are all concerned by the murder that is committed in a closed environment. They all have some personal interest to commit this crime, hence a motive, and none of them have an alibi, at least a real alibi. They can all have done it and Poirot is going to use his Belgian brain to sort out the facts and bring out the truth, as a reconstruction that is intended to trap or trick the culprit. And it works. That's how the mystery is resolved. One shady corner can be found though: the cobra in Poirot's bathroom will remain unexplained. It must have been overlooked at some moment in the making of the film because Agatha Christie would never do such a mistake.

Nice set, worth the price.......2004-04-24
I really loved all the Agatha Christie movies from the late 70's and early 80's. Death on the Nile and Evil Under the Sun are top notch. Both DVDs are worth the price alone for this set. Each DVD comes with extras, which is sort of amazing considering the age of these movies. In Death and Evil, they have brief interviews with most cast members about how they view their character, the hallmarks of each character, and whether they actually like the character. These are on-set interviews. There is a mini documentary about how the steamer from Death was found, and how it was recreated in the studio and how they dealt with moonlight scenes and the river look. It was great. There was a whole discussion about how the island was selected for Evil. There are a few interviews with Peter Ustinov as well. No deleted scenes or alternative endings, but great extras otherwise. Each comes with a theatrical trailer as well.
Death on the Nile is one I can watch over and over. It boast a great cast, a great script, and good action. It is very funny also. Evil Under the Sun is almost as good, it is funnier but there's not as much action, only one corpse. Both have lovely scenery and are truly good mysteries. I love Ustinov as the Belgian sleuth.
The Mirror Crack'd is the relative dud in this series. It was made around the same time as the others by the same people, so I see why it's included here, and it was also an all-star cast, but the story is rather dull and plodding. Little action, some decent humor, but it's not something you'd care to watch more than once or twice. It is more interesting to watch just to see a middle aged Elizabeth Taylor act with a slightly pre-AIDS Rock Hudson with a still young-looking Kim Novak. Neither Taylor nor Hudson gives a particularly memorable performance in this one, it does seem that at times Taylor and Hudson appear to be reading lines and showing no emotion or interest in their performances. They are that dull in this. A nice turn for Novak however, she plays the brazen hussie to the hilt and has some really funny lines, particularly with Taylor. But the story itself holds little interest and becomes tedious many times during the movie. Many have criticized Landsbury as Miss Marple. I thought she was fine, but doesn't have the zing of Ustinov.
If you are a fan of at least two of these films, get the box set. The extras are worth the price. The color and sound all looked acceptable and were good. They are widescreen format, whether you like it or not. I have a traditional square TV so it's a little annoying, but most prefer the widescreen and having black bars at the top and bottom of the screen for some reason.

For almost the first half of Death on the Nile, any viewer who hasn't read Agatha Christie's intricate mystery won't be wondering who-done-it--instead, it's who's-it-going-to-be. The movie, from the television series Agatha Christie's Poirot, swiftly lays out a panoply of enjoyably odious personalities, from the American heiress who stole her best friend's fiance to the snotty, unkempt radical thinker to the boozing gargoyle of a pulp novelist named Salome Otterbourne, any of whom could be a suitable victim. Puttering amongst this mix of fops and harridans is Christie's most popular creation, the fastidious Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, played with exquisite precision by David Suchet (The Way We Live Now). Once the murder occurs, Poirot sets to work sifting through red herrings and petty deceits to unravel the truth. The crisp script and vigorous editing of this adaptation of Death on the Nile (a previous star-studded version from 1978 starred Peter Ustinov as Poirot) are at their best in the first half, zipping from catty remarks to petty bickering to fussy grumbles, deftly planting clues with the skill of a magician's misdirection. Once the interrogations and searches begin, the movie feels hemmed in. But through it all Suchet, with his beady eyes glittering from under his heavy lids, drives the mystery forward with his magnetic portrayal. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Tony Award nominee David Suchet returns to his celebrated role as Hercule Poirot in a lavish A&E adaptation of the Agatha Christie classic--DEATH ON THE NILE. When Linnet Doyle, the richest woman in London, steals and marries her best friend's fiancé, the
Customer Reviews:
Poirot should have detected this remake really Sucked........2007-01-17
Really rushed and other than Suchet ... the acting was terrible by most of the cast..
A favorite of mine........2006-07-19
Death on the Nile is an adaptation from one of the longer novels of A. Christie. Death...was adapted in the 70s, but if you want the truth, that movie sucked. And it sucked because of Mia Farrow and Peter Ustinov. David Suchet is the only actor to portray Hercule Poirot greatly and naturally. Ustinov and Finney both seemed either too stiff or ill-fit for the character we grew to know and love by reading the books.
The A&E version of the story is thoroughly enjoyable and is my favorite A&E Poirot movie. The story itself is ingenious and the guilty could have easily gotten away with it if not for a couple of eye witnesses and of course, the little grey cells of Poirot.
Not as good as the film.......2006-01-02
I am a great admirer of David Suchet's Poirot, but I found this production disappointing. Despite being filmes in Egypt with breathtaking scenery, most of the touches of warmth and humour that make a Christie novel such a pleasure to read are missing from this production. The three young people in the love triangle that is the basis for the mystery all seemed to me entirely lacklustre.
The worst thing of all though, is that two of the most charming and interesting people in the book, Timothy Allerton and his delightful mother, have had their characters grotesquely distorted until they bear virtually no resemblance to their originals, and there is a quite gratuitous and disgusting implication of an incestuous relationship between them which is certainly not implied in any way in Agatha Christie's novel. The girl who, in the book, Timothy Allerton loves, has had her character changed and subdued until she barely makes any impact on the story at all.
All this makes this a very disappointing production. The Ustinov film is better.
Missing Maggie............2005-04-13
Poirot - DEATH ON THE NILE. The new Poirot series produced by A&E is excellent and I would encourage all Poirot and David Suchet fans to purchase these DVDs, however, when it comes to this particular story, I still prefer the Peter Ustinov version with Mia Farrow, Betty Davis and Maggie Smith.
The irony of the new series is that Suchet has literally grown into the part so he seems more natural in this episode than ever. I recall that when he made the earlier Poirot films which included his pal Captain Hastings and counterpart Inspector Japp, Suchet was padded with pillows and makeup to make him appear older. Now he apparently fills the role with no `extra' assistance from wardrobe.
In spite of the inevitable comparison with the Ustinov interpretation and missing the pals in whom he confided and who often aided his crime solving, I enjoyed this story very much. The filmography is beautiful. The BBC uses lavish sets including the river boat and costumes. The original film with Ustinov showed a good deal of actual footage shot in Egypt. This issue of `Death on the Nile' appears to have some shots in Egypt, but to tell you the truth, they could have shot most of the film elsewhere...for example Central or South America. Population growth and war have altered the terrain in Egypt considerably since Agatha Christie wrote her novel, which takes place around the 1930s.
Mediocre Mystery Movie !.......2005-02-09
Even though I own most of the "Poirot Offerings" starring David Suchet owing to my affinity for Agatha Christie's work,I still maintain that "Peter Ustinov" is by far more at home in "Poirot's" shoes as evident by his inimitable performences as the belgian eccentric/sleuth over the years.particularly in the "Death on the Nile"(1978).And having said that, the latest addition to A&E's Poirot caper of the same name featuring Suchet is unfortunately "Toothles and Meandering" at best.In short,If you already own the Original ( Ustinov )version, then don't even bother spending your hard-earned on this trite.

Product Description
When Linnet Doyle, the richest woman in London, steals and marries her best friend's fiancé, the best friend gets her revenge by hounding the newlyweds throughout their honeymoon. A subsequent pleasure cruise down the River Nile turns deadly when the widely despised Mrs. Doyle is found murdered in bed. Thank goodness the famed Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is along for the ride. His services are sorely in need as the body count--and the number of suspects--quickly rises.
Maintaining the high production standards fans of the Poirot series have come to expect, Suchet and his marvelous cast of suspects faithfully recreate the brilliant plot twists that have made Agatha Christie mysteries famous the world over in DEATH ON THE NILE.

A GREAT PRODUCTION, WONDERFUL PERFORMANCES, GOOD SCENES AND SOUNDTRACK.......2007-06-26
Death on the Nile is one of my favorite films ever, is so well done
that we get deceived with the sequence of the events and mainly with
the brilliant performances, at first I thought JJ Feild as Simon Doyle
was not the indicated because of his calm, loving and plain acting, but
now I think he is perfect for the role, we couldn't ever think about
him killing his loved wife. Emma Malin is good as well, she's not so
pretty but that's the way it should be, she has an air of psycho needed
for the role. And not even talk about Emily Blunt as Linnet Ridgeway,
she did a really good performance, she is so classy, beautiful and
sophisticated, just the requirements for playing the role of Linnet,
who's very self-confident as she walks in the dinning cabin, used to
being admired, looked at, to being the center of attention wherever she
went, and the actress pulls up the role perfectly. I loved David
Suchet, he wakes up the right reactions for the plot of the film.
Daniel Lapaine as Tim attracted my attention 'cause he was so
hilarious, his face, his movements. In summary, the movie is great,
intriguing and entertaining to death, I'll never get tired of seeing it
again and again.
