The Shim Sham originated as a tap dance choreographed by Leonard Reed and Willie Bryant in 1928. Intended for a show finale that could be done by all the performers it was adopted by many dancers and became one of the most well-known and wide-spread routines of all times.

You may be familiar with the tap version or the non-tap version that Frankie Manning made popular teaching at many swing dance camps and workshops all over the world. The Dean Collins version of the Shim Sham is also a non-tap version based on the original Shim Sham with spiced up footwork and additional steps extending the routine. Dean Collins was the most influential Lindy Hop dancer on the West Coast and played an essential role in bringing the New York style of Swing dancing to the West Coast in 1938.

Project XX Life in the Thirties.......2007-06-19

This is an excellent production and shows the real facts about the depression of the 1930's. Like all the Project XX Specials it shows situations as they were.

A beautiful look back at a fateful decade........2005-08-29

This was originally a chapter in the excellent Project Twenty series on television 45 years ago. It is a magnificent look at a decade that included the depression, the Roosevelt years, the labor strife, and the gathering storm clouds in Europe. Beautifully narrated by the the most mellifluous voice of Alexander Scourby. The last five minutes while Scourby narrates the end of an era over images of the 1939 New York World's Fair and the music of the "September Song" is overwhelming (especially for anyone over 70). There isn't any television like this nowadays. A treasure.

Balboa was very popular among the College Kids and the sophisticated dancers in the mid 30s and is now extremely popular once again. Originally Balboa was a closed position swing form with intricate footwork predominantly based on 8-count patterns. But when the hot Swing music really hit the scene some of the younger dancers like Maxie Dorf and Lolly Wise added Break-Aways and Swing Turns to the Balboa, which nowadays is often referred to as Bal-Swing.

Balboa can be danced to any speed of music, from slow songs at 120 beats/min. till very fast ones at 300 beats/min. Pure Balboa is probably the easiest way to dance to fast swing music.

This DVD is a three title set that contains 50 (!) different steps and a lot of great bonus material.

Balboa/Bal-Swing 1 doesn't require any experience in Balboa dancing. It starts right at the beginning. Marcus & Bärbl and Steve & Denise set great store by getting you a good foundation and feeling for the dance. You will learn the most typical steps that form the character of Balboa and Bal-Swing. Every step is broken down and well explained. Big emphasis is put on the leading and following of each step. Comprehensive!.......2007-01-12

This Balboa/Bal-Swing set is a comprehensive instruction on this dance style. If you've never danced swing or at a beginning level, it may be a bit overwhelming. But having 2 sets of instructors is great because you see the moves in different styles and/or angles. The documentary and dance demonstrations that are included are fantastic! Definitely well worth adding to your dance instruction collection.
