Description
The angelic voice and youthful sparkle of this budding star is hypnotic.
Shot on location against the beautiful Maritime backdrop of Glace Bay Harbor, Nova Scotia, Aselin Debison is joined in performance by her mentor and co-songwriter Bruce Guthro. Residents and friends, family and fans talk about Aselin's talent, her spirit and Cape Breton, the island they share.
Aselin first broke on the music scene a few years ago when she sang "The Island", Cape Breton's unofficial anthem, at a rally for local miners who had lost their jobs. Many in the audience, including the miners, were in tears at her inspired rendition and her reputation spread. Since then she has appeared on a number of TV specials and her career is poised for future pop music stardom.
Featured Songs: Sweet Is the Melody, Driftwood, Love So Rare, Some Days, Rise Again, The Dance You Choose, Out of the Woods, Moonlight Shadow, Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World, Getting Dark Again, Once in Every Life, To Say Goodbye to You, The Island.

Only time will tell whether Canadian Aselin Debison will grow, as predicted, into "the next Celine Dion." But this PBS concert/documentary shows her developing momentum toward that goal. She has become a show-biz veteran, though her voice is still developing. She has been in the spotlight for a third of her life since her impromptu debut at age 8, singing at a demonstration for miners in Nova Scotia. A film clip shows her at that event, awesomely cute.
She has replaced some of that cuteness with a precocious maturity, a budding professionalism that has not damaged her freshness and spontaneity. The music in this very professional production nearly duplicates that on her first CD, but the visuals are a substantial bonus. She is shown walking on a beach, playing basketball, harmonizing with her dog on "Over the Rainbow," and mingling with the neighbors on Cape Breton Island who seem to have made her a kind of icon. --Joe McLellan

Lovely.......2007-01-19
This dvd is so very well done. The songs are beautiful and the scenery is very very beautiful. A joy to watch. I really enjoy it.
A Fresh Recording Worth Your Time.......2004-12-13
I caught a few minutes of Sweet is the Melody recently on public television and was really captivated with this music. It has a freshness and transcending beauty to it which is usually missing from popular music. The focus is on the music instead of the performer, and that is rare these days. (The choice of backdrop in the video was also great and reminded me of a children's story I am working on which is set on the north Oregon coast.) In particular, The Island brought to mind a haunting Gaelic melody I heard in the late 1980s. That song told the story of a ship lost at sea in the area of the Isle of Man. I ended-up losing the name of the singer myself in the years to come, so I made sure that I went out and bought this music before I misplaced yet another musical jewel.
I hope that Aselin's future work skirts modern culture just enough so that she continues to offer something fresh, different, and real. After all, the last thing we need is another Britney Spears!
My only comments for improvement on this DVD format are that it is impossible to simply play the songs in order without the dialogue in between. While the interviews and dialogue are great, it would be nice to be able to skip more easily at times. Also, there are a couple of times where there are recording errors which aren't fixed quite right.
This song changed me.......2004-06-02
WOW.....I love this music and that song "somewhere over the rainbow" gives me chills. It is so beautiful the way she sings it and it makes me cry everytime. It brings back so many memories and it really makes me think about everything in my life. Music has never done that to me before and it actually touched me and it was almost a magical feeling. Im 16 and I think she is the most moving singer I have ever heard her music actually changed me and the way i act towards people all i really want to do is thank her for her music and she has a wonderful talent and gift from God, Thank you..Torie
A voice and talent to watch for in the future.......2003-09-30
I first saw Aselin Debison on PBS and fell in love with her voice and stage presence. I immediately got on the net and found out more about this little songbird from the north. I now have both the CD and DVD "Sweet is the Melody" and share them with friends to let them know about this up and coming talent. The CD is very easy to listen to and all the songs are well chosen. The DVD has many features and is good fun. All her neighbors and friends at the concert obviously love her and enjoy her music, as do I. Highly recommend this DVD!
Entertaining.......2003-06-06
This is an entertaining concert. It is filmed outdoors and the scenery is spectacular.
I give it a 4 not a 5 since Aselin's voice is still developing. Her voice is often raspy. I expect it will improve in the next couple of years.
