With a reported budget of $172 million, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines starts in high gear and never slows down. The apocalyptic "Judgment Day" of T2 was never prevented, only postponed: John Connor (Nick Stahl, replacing T2's Edward Furlong), now 22 and disconnected from society, is being pursued yet again, this time by the advanced T-X, a sleek "Terminatrix" (coldly expressionless Kristanna Loken) programmed to stop Connor from becoming the savior of humankind. Originally programmed as an assassin, a disadvantaged T-101 cyborg (Arnold Schwarzenegger, bidding fond farewell to his signature role) arrives from the future to join Connor and his old acquaintance Kate (Claire Danes) in thwarting the T-X's relentless pursuit. The plot presents a logical fulfillment of T2 prophesy, disposing of Connor's mother (Linda Hamilton is sorely missed) while computer-driven machines assume control, launching a nuclear nightmare that Connor must survive. With Breakdown and U-571 serving as worthy rehearsals for this cautionary epic of mass destruction, director Jonathan Mostow wisely avoids any stylistic connection to James Cameron's Terminator classics; instead he's crafted a fun, exciting popcorn thriller, humorous and yet still effectively nihilistic, and comparable to Jurassic Park III in returning the Terminator franchise to its potent B-movie roots. --Jeff Shannon
Description
A decade has passed since John Connor (NICK STAHL) helped prevent Judgment Day and save mankind from mass destruction. Now 25, Connor lives "off the grid" - no home, no credit cards, no cell phone and no job. No record of his existence. No way he can be traced by Skynet - the highly developed network of machines that once tried to kill him and wage war on humanity. Until?out of the shadows of the future steps the T-X (KRISTANNA LOKEN), Skynet's most sophisticated cyborg killing machine yet. Sent back through time to complete the job left unfinished by her predecessor, the T-1000, this machine is as relentless as her human guise is beautiful. Now Connor's only hope for survival is the Terminator (ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER), his mysterious former assassin. Together, they must triumph over the technologically superior T-X and forestall the looming threat of Judgment Day?or face the apocalypse and the fall of civilization as we know it.
Customer Reviews:
Second DVD reveals the real "stars" of the film.......2007-06-17
Though the casting is perfect (Arnold again in his trademark role, Kristanna Loken as the sexy and equally as destructive "female" cyborg, and Nick Stahl appropriately looking like the spawn of Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn) and the direction and pacing is tight and relentless, the DVD provides insight into the technical artists that are responsible for the fantastic effects of the movie, along with the preceding films in the franchise.
The second DVD in the compilation profiles Stan Winston, visual effects director, and his talented staff as they explain the many "tricks" of the trade in the making of this movie.
Though it might be a bit disconcerting to discover the process behind "movie magic," just revelations are informative to those that are really into the technical aspects of filmmaking.
Much has changed in the almost twenty years since the first film was made and this sequel; and the filmmakers are anxious to explain the "how's" and "why's" of said change.
Good movie, looks amazing in HD.......2007-06-14
The video quality is nothing short of spectacular.
Tame third instalment.......2007-05-08
Passable only extension to the terminator franchise, this serves only to set the stage for more potential films. As a stand alone product it's pretty futile, Sarah has died, John is still living on the fringes whining a lot, a new improved terminator wants him dead and Arnold wants to keep him alive. Much of this repeats stuff you've already seen in T1 & T2, but tamer as they clearly want to keep the rating as low as possible. Scenes that went over well in the first two get recycled almost unchanged in three, it's depressingly derivative.
Linda Hamilton wisely bailed, Arnold needs so much make up to combat the ravages of time he looks rubberised, the new caste members aren't really good enough to take up the load and the jokes are so laboured they creak. It's entertaining enough, but you really wonder why they bothered.
Good Quality - Not the Best of the Trilogy.......2007-05-07
The HD DVD comes with excellent picture quality. The sound is amazing.
But Terminator 1 was definately the best one of the trilogy.
Anyway if you like it, this HD-DVD is a must in the home collection.
T1 and T2 in a blender.......2007-04-20
As with the years that passed between the first and second films, the speculation as to wether or not a third film was going to happen at all was very high. We all heard the conflicting statements of both Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Cameron. Finally Cameron said he would do it if 20th Century Fox would release it. Obviously that didn't happen and Arnold changed his mind after saying No.
The story of T3 is mediocre to average at best and I'll tell you why. To begin with, a lot of necessary exposition is missing. The writers essentially left out a major plot point with the former Cyberdyne Systems and Miles Dyson. Having a situation where Dyson designs Skynet's hardware and Brewster designs the software would have tied T3 a lot more strongly to the franchise. Another thing is what happens to Sarah Connor. This character has basically been the pennacle of the Terminator mythos. If the reigns have to pass from Sarah to John that's fine. But it would have worked better that we see her killed trying to escape after Skynet comes online.
Lastly the concept of The Terminatrix. Now just to be clear, I don't mind a woman being a Terminator. What I do have a problem with is the writers splitting hairs trying to differentiate the T-X from the T-1000. Now we could all see the difference between Arnold and the T-1000. But if the best they can do is showing the T-X endo during a copy, then that won't cut it. There are ways to come up with new concepts on something established. Maybe that's where Cameron could have worked some magic.
The only two things that worked for me were Arnold's description of what will happen in the future in terms of the war, and the ending surprised me though. It set up the fourth film pretty well. The missing elements Cameron's nightmarish vision and storytelling smoothness are what crippled this film. Not bad, but could have been better.

While My Big Fat Greek Wedding broke box-office records in 2002, Real Women Have Curves did a better job of keeping it real. Set in the vibrant environs of East Los Angeles, with a breakthrough performance by Latina newcomer America Ferrera, this comedic drama takes a familiar subject--a bright teenager struggling to define her identity--and turns it into an authentic celebration of feminine empowerment. Eighteen-year-old Ana (Ferrera) has scholarship potential, her first boyfriend, and a chubby figure that her similarly overweight mother (Lupe Ontiveros, perfectly cast) won't stop harping about. Mom insists that Ana work in her sister's dressmaking sweatshop, continuing a family tradition that can only break her spirit. How Ana defies this fate--and how director Patricia Cardoso captures the proud tenacity of several full-figured seamstresses--is what makes this film (adapted from a play by Josefina Lopez) so uniquely refreshing. Greek Wedding made more money, but Real Women--which is just as funny--makes a lot more sense. --Jeff Shannon
Description
A $6 million box office theatrical run followed awards and acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival. Should Ana leave home, go to college and experience life? Or stay home, get married, and keep working in her sister's struggling garment factory? It may seem like an easy decision, but for 18 year-old Ana, every choice she makes this summer will change her life. Right now, she may be making clothes for less shapely women. But Ana is about to discover that real women take chances, have flaws, embrace life, and above all have curves!

Fun Movie!.......2007-05-07
I loved this movie....it is exceptionally well acted, witty, with a smart and biting script. Though it's technically a "chick flick", I think men would enjoy it also (although maybe not admit that). I saw it on television and liked it so much I wanted to see the unedited version. You can never go wrong with a movie made by HBO, and is something that you will want to pull out of the drawer and watch again and again.
Portrayal Seems Genuine !.......2007-04-11
Great movie for all ages. This film is very enjoyable and it can be appreciated by any age group. Laughed through most of this mainly upbeat film.
Characters are portrayed very authentically and believable.
Nothing too far fetched (except maybe the underwear dancing factory workers), though that was a hysterical scene.
Loved it !
Recommend it !
The Mother-Daughter Thing.......2007-03-27
I liked this movie a lot. It's not a powerhouse, it's what I think of as a "whisperer." I watched it months ago, and there are some particular moments that keep playing in my mind, still, because I could really feel them. I'm far from being a Latina, but I love Latino/Mexican/Central American culture, so I watched this movie expecting it to be aimed at an audience much younger than me. I love "Ugly Betty" and thought seeing America Ferrera in one of her movies would be interesting. There were several mother-daughter scenes in this movie which really brought forth long-buried memories of exchanges with my own mother, moments where you realize how uncomfortable you're making your mother and you can't help it. As an adult I realize what those moments were, and they don't seem so large and terrible now, but at the time they were. This movie brought them back into focus and made me realize the importance of growing up, of becoming your own person, and the necessity for every daughter to have the courage to "step over" their mother and become herself. It's interesting to watch Ana come through the process and finally realize how HARD her family works to make her able to take that step over. On another note, I am appalled and disappointed at how many fans of Ms. Ferrera have posted on various sites that they love her, love that she's not the usual lookalike skinny stick-insect, and then finish their post with something like, "she'd be prettier if she'd lose weight." It's mean and false. This movie also made me go back and watch "The Joy Luck Club" again, another excellent mother-daughter reflection.
Great Gift to Women of All Sizes & Aspirations.......2007-03-09
It is so wonderful to have a film about women learning to just be who you are, regardless of class background and/or size. A great story of accepting yourself and others, and demanding that you be accepted for who and what you are.
Its a good movie but..........2007-01-25
Its a good movie but i was a bit dissapointed. it would of been much better if 1.the mom had realised woman can do stuff like go to college too. 2.the sister had raised the prices on the dresses so that the factory got more money. 3.the sister started her own shop with dresses for heaver woman. 4.ana had seen her boy friend again. i don't think you should buy this movie but to rent it, its great!

Just like being there.......2007-03-16
Watching this film provided a real sense of the participant's journey. The breath taking landscapes and natural beauty, the ornate and decorative monasteries, and the sense of wonder expressed by the pilgrims all provide a personal insight into the spirit of Tibet.
A "Must See!".......2007-03-15
If you are planning a pilgrimage to Tibet, or if you have a special interest in Tibet, this film is a "must see." It is the story of one thoughtful man's journey to central Tibet, the high point being Lhamo Lhasa, the Lake of Visions. Educational and touching, the film made me cry and smile, and kept me glued to the screen. I'm very glad I bought it!
A fond reminder.......2007-03-15
This film is an evocative reminder of our 2004 trip to Tibet with Glenn Mullin and touches on many of the highlights. The film has a comfortable, low-key feel to it which is very enjoyable.
SANCTUARY.......2007-03-04
as a practicing buddhist who has never been to tibet, i found this dvd to be a most compelling journey into the innermost sanctums of the tibetan buddhist tradition......michael wiese and crew have managed to capture the vast richness and sublime essence of these magical places........the film making is topnotch, with a narratve and pacing that pull you further and further into places that have seldom been heretofore documented, and cinematography that will leave some indelible images in your mind and heart.......
inpiring, beautiful film.......2007-02-27
Whatever your specific chosen path, anyone with spiritual outlook should relate to the thrill of the experience that this film illustrates. Further, anyone who desires to see the breadth and depth and beauty of the world and all G-d's creatures will surely enjoy traveling along on such an adventure.
The photography is beautiful, the music is lovely, and the narrator charming!

Many critics called Gigli one of the worst movies ever made, but their condemnation isn't entirely justified. The movie's got plenty of problems, such as inconsistent tone, gag-inducing dialogue, and a meandering plot that fails to generate momentum over 124 minutes. And yet, this character-based vehicle for Hollywood sweethearts Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez is not without its charms: To begin with, there's J-Lo, whose beauty and presence flourish despite her ill-conceived role as a lesbian contract killer. Critics were also wrong in saying Lopez lacks on-screen chemistry with her off-screen beau; there are moments when they click, but director Martin Brest's screenplay maintains sexual confusion right up to an ending that's a total cop-out. Affleck (who did the lesbian-love thing in Chasing Amy) plays another good-natured killer, and their joint kidnapping job (involving the mentally disabled brother of a federal prosecutor) is destined to fail for all the right reasons, even as this anti-romantic comedy (featuring scenery-chewing cameos by Christopher Walken and Al Pacino) fails for all the wrong ones. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Yucky!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-09
EEEEWWWWWWW!!! This movie is soooooooooooooooooooo bad!!!! Awful. Terrible. lame. Don't buy this unless you like being bored to death and torchered.
Gigli is really bad.......2007-04-24
Gigli is one of those pitiful knockoffs of the Quentin Tarentino model of filmmaking: Likeable lowlife characters, an offbeat storyline, and quirky dialogue with loads of kitschy humor. Sadly the formula that works so well for Mr. Tarentino doesn't work all for Martin Brest. Awful is an understatement when describing this movie.
Larry Gigli (gee-lee) is a bumbling Southern California mobster assigned by his boss to kidnap the disabled son of a federal prosecutor so they can blackmail him. But his boss doesn't trust him, so he sends a hit woman to help him do the job. Gigli spends most of the movie trying to hit on the hitwoman-but she's a lesbian. In between fights with high schoolers, lesbian lovers, yoga, orders from his boss and arguments, arguments arguments, we're supposed to believe these two try to make us believe there's a romance between them. This must have worked on paper because it doesn't work on the screen. In the end he lets the boy go on the set of Baywatch, his favorite show. (Which was cancelled during the time this movie was made) While he uses pick up lines on an extra, Gigli drives off into the sunset with the hit woman.
I've seen my share of bad movies and this is the new number one worst film I have ever seen in my life. (See some of my other reviews.) Nothing I've endured on a late Saturday Night can compare to how awful this movie is. Not White Chicks. Not Black Samurai. Not even Smurfs and the Magic Flute. The screenplay must have been a collaborative effort between chimps and a box of rocks; they're the only two groups this would make sense to. Perhaps chimps were executives involved in the preproduction too. I mean, how does something this puerile get greenlit for production by a human being? What imbecile would think this script is worth investing millions into? No plot, long rambling monologues, a story that goes round and round in circles, and characters with the personality of wet cardboard decorated with mustard and ketchup. I think a bunch of elementary school kids could come up with a better script than this during arts and crafts.
Director Martin Brest lenses a slow tedious movie that goes nowhere over the course of ninety minutes. In his attempt to add his own distinct flavor to the Tarentino formula, he tries to put a Rain Man vibe to it mixed in with a little Tao of Steve. Blending the softer touch with the gritty characters ends up with a bland derivative movie with no personality and no ideas of its own. Outside of the cinematography the entire movie is a mess. I have to ask one question to the director and producers of this film: Who wears leather jackets in the summertime in Southern California?
Ben Affleck is his usual horrible self here. Watch him use the same facial expression for oh- just about everything. Jennifer Lopez is so hammy here she belongs in a sandwich. She has no chemistry with Affleck and is completely over the top in most scenes. I couldn't believe her as a mob hit woman or a lesbian, she's just J.Lo superstar here again. Oscar winners Al Pacino and Christopher Walken are wasted here their cameos add nothing to this mess. Lanie Kazan is the only actress who manages to pull a decent performance out of this mess. In her cameo as Gigli's Mom she steals the scenes she's in with her warm energy and dynamic presence.
Get as far away from this Tarentino wanna-be as you can. If you like films in this genre, get the real deal from the man himself. Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown or the Kill Bill series are far better than this hackneyed mess.
No, Its true!!!.......2006-12-24
I dreamed I saw a worse movie than this one and I woke up and some one had pooped on my head.
Too bad I can't give it 0 stars!.......2006-10-26
This is every bit as bad as you have heard and WORSE if you can imagine that! I found it totally unwatchable and after the 'Gobble, gobble it's turkey time" line I had to turn it off because I was going to barf! I must vote that line as "least sexy line of all time" Whoever allowed that line in the movie needs to have their head examined. There is NO chemestry between Ben and Jen, I don't even know how these two ever hooked up! You really want to smack the both of them. There is no way these two are convincing as 'thugs' especially when you know they are both annoying, spoiled stars with tons of $ who have both let fame go to their heads. The screen is not big enough for their combined egos. The acting is horrible, the script is horrible, the dialogue is pathetic and I never saw the ending but with this much bad going on, I really don't care. I am not going to waste over an hour of my life on such a horiffic movie! Seriously people, does Hollywood really think people are dumb enough to buy something this lame? This movie surpassed bad, surpassed 'so bad it's good' and came back around to bad and formed a whole new catagory, "So bad it needs to be reported to the Movie Safety Commission before someone goes blind" Seriously folks...IT'S REALLY BAD!
What was so bad about it?.......2006-09-26
Usually I cringe with movies with gays or the retarded. This had both, and they were easy enough on the eyes that it didn't matter. There were a few interesting lines, and it fit well together. Oh, and to all who said it was impossible/implausible that she would suddenly turn straight and like him, there were two things: Ben dropped his tough guy act and let her see his real self, and Ben Affleck is that type of guy that it would be believable.

Customer Reviews:
No less than a tour of the remains of our failed societal experiments!.......2005-11-25
I've enjoyed many Globe Trekker episodes in the past, but this one outdid them all. Not only from an entertainment perspective, but from a - Oh My Gosh! - perspective. This 2 hour DVD visits sites in 25 countries - all of them UN World Heritage sites (Read: spectacular) most likely.
This DVD shows us 1st hand, the remains of our previously failed experiments in trying to build a sustainable society. I have traveled extensively to 35+ countries all over the world for many months at a time - as a backpacker and businessperson - and was still impressed with this DVD. There were quite a few places I had never even heard of (Despite having the 2005 official UN World Heritage Map on a wall!). Leptis Magna in Libya was particularly interesting to view.
Seeing the collage of all these places at once, helps to connect the dots of what they all mean. If you enjoy this video you may enjoy reading A Short History of Progress by Ronald Wright (Only 132 pages!), and Why We Lie by David Livingstone Smith.
As for DVDs - other titles to enjoy are Globe Trekker Great Festivals, Frontline Persuaders, Charcoal People, Commanding Heights, National Geographic's Strange Days on Planet Earth, and NG's Beyond the Movie series for Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring, and Return of the King. As for fiction - Rapa Nui - which is another name for Easter Island, the last destination on this DVD.
