Adults may think it's too early to teach a baby the difference between a trumpet and a bugle, but Baby Einstein: Meet the Orchestra--First Instruments entertains children with its next music installment. Relying on its tried-and-true formula of bright colors, quick-paced format, and almost no dialogue (except to repeat names and identify groups by section: brass, woodwinds, strings, and so forth), First Instruments flashes the instrument and its name on the screen, demonstrates how it sounds, and shows animated characters, puppets, babies, youth, and grown-ups all performing on (and enjoying) it. It then combines instruments for a few classical numbers. The jazzy rendition of Beethoven's "Fur Elise" is questionable (it would be nicer to teach kids appreciation for the real thing). Bonus features include instrument flash cards, several puppet shows, a featurette teaching more about music, and additional orchestral numbers. A nice diversion for your little maestro-to-be. Ages 1 year and up.--Ellen A. Kim
Customer Reviews:
Purposly screwed up!!.......2007-06-06
Synthesized junk from start to finish. Most of the time the music doesn't match what you see being played, and the sounds are laughable. Even when the music matches what the musicians are playing (like the piano section) they over-dub a synthesized version... like kids prefer electric sounds to real instruments! Truly awful. I'm really mad. They had such an opportunity to be educational and PURPOSLY SCREWED IT UP!!! Save your money and go hear a REAL orchestra.
Meet the Orchestra, Just Sensational.......2007-06-03
Baby Einstein is a wonderful line of videos to help aid in your child's development. Get them off to a very good start with these videos, and this special one, Meet the Orchestra - First Instruments. Get them well on the way to a successful future now! Don't wait!
Boring to toddlers.......2007-03-09
My toddler loves Baby Einstein DVD's, but I have to agree with many of the other reviewers. Where are the puppets? And why are the kids in the DVD not actually playing the instruments?
My toddler finds this DVD very boring. The DVD is simply animated animals coming onstage with an instrument and then it cuts to clips of children with the instrument (but these kids aren't actually playing the instruments). There are hardly any puppets and the colors are not very visually stimulating.
I appreciate the thought of introducing the children to instruments but there are more creative ways to do so (and more accurate ways as well).
A BIG HIT!.......2007-01-04
I purchased this DVD for my son who is a huge fan of Baby Einstein and music. I found it to be the perfect combination, although there are not too many puppets I found it very educational especially for music lovers. But there were a few instruments missing but to be honest I dont think most 2 year olds would notice!
Nannette
Yes, it really is that bad........2006-11-23
I can forgive Baby Einstein for their 're-orchestrations' of previous videos. They don't sound terrible. But they didn't purport to be what this one does, and they didn't misuse electronics to this extent.
Instead of a child getting excited about music, he will end up indifferent, or worse. I discourage my son from watching this video. He much prefers listening to real orchestral recordings, anyway. He is learning the sounds of the instruments by listening to the different solos of Ravel's "Bolero" and the like.
Here we have proof of what music becomes when you replace real musicians with Samplers, Sequencers, and Synthesizers: boring. I challenge the Disney company and/or Baby Einstein to re-record the soundtrack, as originally arranged, but using a full group of real musicians instead of the 3 S's. Hear the difference for yourselves. Then, with a few tweaks, you will have a quality product. Please send me the new version of the DVD.

Good concert and selection, some sound problems.......2004-04-14
I would give this DVD 5 stars for a review, it weren't for a small, sound engineering detail. The sound is a little weak on the DVD, and i had to put my sound system at half its power just to get a decent sound. Most people might not see that as a problem, but I own several salsa DVDs (Bobby Valentin's 25 year anniversary at the Prison comes to mind) which have been produced better. However, the music is a great exposition of the Salsa classics of the 1960s and 1970s, performed with a modern 2000 band. If you're a fan of Fania All-Stars, El Gran Combo, and other staples of the Puerto Rican salsa movement of the 1960s and 1970s, this is a great DVD for the collection. If you are into more modern salsa and timba from Cuba, you might be disappointed at the more "restrained" salsa sound from the 1960s and 1970s that is the style of Roberto Roena's band. I'd recommend the Bobby Valentin 25th year anniversary DVD at the Prison. It's still distinctively "Puerto Rican salsa", but with a more modern funky/jazz touch to it.
If you like Roberto's music, this DVD is gold with 20 tracks. However, make sure you have a nice sound system to amplify the sound, as the sound coming from the DVD is pretty weak in comparison to others.

Description
Gioacchino Rossini's Stabat Mater is the fourth concert in the renowned Jubilaeum Concert Series commissioned by Pope John Paul II and the Vatican. Filmed by Carlo Di Palma at the Basilica di San Pacrazio Fuori le Mura in Rome. Rossini's Stabat Mater has long been considered the most beautiful arrangement of this classic work. Conducted by Corrado Giuffredi.
Customer Reviews:
Incredible music making -- not for the casual listener.......2001-02-08
From reading the other reviews you will know the big surprise about this performance: that it's not the choral version of the Stabat Mater, but rather a transcription made by Rossini himself in 1842(?). And you're not going to like this very much unless you're a great fan of the Stabat Mater, or a great fan of chamber music, or both.
But if you are, this is a real gem, and you *must* listen to it -- you will be absolutely amazed.
First, the ensemble is certainly unusual: two clarinets, one flute, two oboes, two trumpets, two french horn, one valved trombone, two bassoon, one contrabassoon, one bass clarinet. How did he come up with that?? The textures coming from combining these instruments are strange and wonderful: a trumpet and clarinet doing the duet in Quis est homo, vocally done by a soprano and mezzo was especially odd -- pairings of french horns and bassoons, flute and bassoon, all kinds of things you're not likely to hear in orchestral music nor in more conventional chamber music.
Another cool thing is that the ensemble plays without a conductor, meaning you get to see the interplay between the musicians, and also the solo aspect of the performance, as there are no doubled parts. (And for that reason I disagree with a previous reviewer that the video is unnecessary -- I found it riveting.)
Bottom line on this one: unless you're pretty hardcore, you ain't gonna like it. But if you like the Stabat Mater you're gonna love it, and if you're a chamber music fan you should first get a choral version of the piece and learn it really well, so you can marvel at what Rossini did in setting his own vocal and choral lines in the context of a truly inspired chamber ensemble.
Oh, one last thing. The musicianship is of the very highest caliber. It's worth the price of the DVD just to watch the solo bassoon at work! And the brass players play with remarkable restraint: how can two trumpets, two horns and a trombone keep from drowning out the rest of the ensemble thoroughly? Quite tastefully, it turns out.
Very boring!.......2000-07-17
This DVD is a great disappointment in that the work is played only by a 14 piece woodwind and brass ensemble. It is SO boring that even after two attemps to play it through, I have yet to finish it! I must confess that I'm not familiar with this work by Rossini so don't know exactly what instruments it was scored for, but regardless of that, it's one of the most uninteresting classical music performances I've yet come across. Just recently I bought the region 2 DVD of Andrea Bocelli singing Sacred Arias. On that disk are two pieces from this work which are played by a string orchestra AND sung by a choir. These performances are TOTALLY awesome and are an eye-opener as to how it should possibly sound. I'm not sure if this Bocelli DVD is available in NTSC region 1, but if it is, then this landmark recording will be worth every cent you may have to pay. I recommend you go for that one rather than this.
Technically the disk is only average with the contrast being a little too high and the colours a bit washed out, requiring the contrast and colour settings on the TV to be adjusted to compensate. The Dolby 5.1 sound is crisp and clear even though the sound as stated on the cover should only be Dolby Surround or stereo!
Warning.......2000-07-04
The title of this release would lead you to expect a performance of Rossini's Stabat Mater as he scored it: soprano, alto, tenor and bass soloists, chorus and symphony orchestra (led by a conductor). What you actually hear is an arrangement for a small wind ensemble - no singers, and, despite the citation, no conductor. This wonderful piece is made far less interesting by such a reduction. Besides, the performance is pretty ragged. Unless you are unusually enthusiastic about wind ensembles, you should save your money.
A pleasant disappointment.......2000-06-26
I am not giving five stars to this magnificent recording because of the complete lack of informa- tion in the DVD box. This is not the sung Stabat Mater that anyone would have expected but an 1847 insrumentation for winds. There is nothing about this on the box. A brief history of this version would have been necessary. In the box, the sections (chapters) are wrongly printed, since Chapter One should be "Stabat mater dolorosa" and not "Cujus animam". In the recording, the chapters numbers and the time are not recorded, so you never know what part is being played because this is not a sung version. But what a pleasant disappointment! Even if the concert took place in a minor basilica with nothing much to show, like the other concerts of this series, the sound recording is so brilliant and this version is so faithful to the original that by the end of the first section one could al- most hear the voices of the singers. This is a very beautiful and important recording of an un- kown version of this very well loved Rossini mas- terpiece, perhaps the most famous of all musical settings of the Stabat Mater, the sequence for the mass for Friday for Passion week or Sorrows Friday.
Beautiful audio, superfluous video.......2000-06-18
The music and the performance are wonderful, but, unless one enjoys watching the musicians, this DVD might as well be a CD. The video portion consists solely of footage of the orchestra with a few shots of the interior of the church they're playing in (it's not the church on the cover and not an interior to sustain much interest). The DVD has the choice of turning off the video. The 'Stabat Mater' is usually a vocal work, but this version by Rossini is purely instrumental. A website for the 'Jubilaeum' series (www.jubileeconcerts.com) is listed on the cover, but nothing has been put up yet. The producers provide no information on the work or its composer.

Great program!.......2005-05-31
I thought this was a great program. It has a wonderful group playing some delightful music. It is also very informative. Would definetly buy it again.
Unbelievably horrid production.......2004-11-06
I gave this one star, because Amazon doesn't allow you to award no stars at all -- or negative stars, which this embarrassment deserves. As a former television cameraman and documentary producer, I'd say this is the most horrendously bad amateur production I've ever seen in my long career -- and I've seen a lot of turkeys. The Rollins College music department should be mortally embarrassed to have their name on this junk.
This appears to be a miserably third-rate classroom instructional tape for students who had the flu that day and missed the professor's actual class. It looks like they let the students run the cameras -- worse than a community access cable channel run by neighborhood grandmothers.
It's videotaped in what looks like some ugly high school classroom. It appears to be totally unscripted,ad lib, unrehearsed, and unprepared -- a last-minute hodge-podge throw-together. The fuzzy video quality looks like a bad 8th generation dub. The camera work is so incredibly jerky and clumsy it looks like Aunt Martha's home video of the nephew's third birthday party -- only Aunt Martha's video is better. A significant number of the instruments are hidden behind music stands so you can't really see what they look like (wasn't seeing the instruments the whole point of the production?).
Sometimes people's heads are cut off. Frequently the camera is aimed at other instruments instead of the ones being demonstrated, apparently because the control room crew dozed off (who can blame them?). Often the camera stays on the instructor's face instead of the instrument he's describing (is someone unclear on the concept?). Mercifully they somehow missed getting the cameraman's thumb in the lens.
The conductor walks around miking the instruments with a hand-held microphone like an auctioneer on some shopping channel -- too cheap to even mike the instruments professionally.
These people were too cheap to even design a case for the DVD. It's in a plain generic case.
