History will show that Frank Zappa (1940-1993) was one of the greatest American composers of the 20th century in any musical form, and this superb episode of the Classic Albums series offers ample proof of Zappa's genius. As Zappa's reverent son and musical heir Dweezil Zappa rightly points out, Over-Nite Sensation (1973) and Apostrophe (') (1974) are the albums that epitomize Zappa's masterful jazz/rock fusion, virtually defining a unique musical genre that can only be called "Zappa." The recording of both albums is chronicled here not simply because they best represent the dazzling complexity of Zappa's music, but also because they were recorded simultaneously in a burst of creativity, proving beyond any doubt that Zappa was more than simply a mischievous provocateur. While the world may know Zappa from his mainstream novelty hit "Valley Girl" (with daughter Moon on vocals), any devoted Zappaphile will tell you that this is the real Zappa, in full musical bloom, working miracles in the studio with The Mothers of Invention and a stellar variety of topnotch musicians who cite their time with Zappa as the most rewarding period of their careers.

The Classic Albums series strives to be definitive, and this must-have DVD is fully authorized in the scope of its coverage. With complete cooperation and participation from the remaining Zappa family (sons Dweezil and Ahmet, daughter Moon, and widow Gail are all extensively interviewed) and additional interviews with Billy Bob Thornton, Alice Cooper, guitarist Steve Vai, veteran Rolling Stone critic David Fricke, and many of Zappa's closest associates and collaborators, this 97-minute documentary is packed with highlights and fascinating revelations, like the pristine precision of Zappa's hand-written compositions, Zappa's childhood fascination with the compositions of Edgard Varèse, and his diligent, prolific, and disciplined, drug-free approach to recording and touring. Zappa's studio process is amazingly revealed when Dweezil and Zappa "Vaultmeister" Joe Travers sit down at a mixing table to analyze the master tapes of classic Zappa tracks like the hilariously controversial "Dyna-Moe Humm." In addition to vintage archival clips of Zappa discussing his music and career, and home movies of Zappa's band on tour during the mid-1970s, this DVD also includes the complete video of Zappa performing "I'm the Slime" on Saturday Night Live in 1976, live footage of a 1973 performance of "Montana," and a new performance of "Camarillo Brillo" by Dweezil's tribute band, Zappa Plays Zappa (with Dweezil playing one of his father's favorite Gibson guitars). Bonus features also include a Travers-hosted trip into the massive Zappa archives, and further deconstruction of Zappa tracks "Dirty Love" and "Nanook Rubs It." If you're a casual Zappa fan, this DVD will turn you into a passionate convert. For those who've loved Zappa all along, it's a little bit of heaven here on Earth. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Roxy Still Eslewhere.......2007-06-27

Worth the price for "Montana" alone - extracted from the long, lost "Roxy & Elsewhere" shows. I live in hope that the Zappa Family Trust will relent, put this set out and finally end the yearning of Zappa fans across the world.

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding bonus material, good feature material.......2007-06-27

The bonus material in this DVD is excellent. There is a great version of Montana with the 73 Roxy band using two drummers (Chester, of course went forward as the one drummer in 74...)the shots of Ruth Underwood and the interview with Ruth is such a treat because her music was such an amazing part of Zappa's music that was never replaced in any of his future bands. The studio analysis was very good but a bit brief in my opinion because there is so much music to analyze in these recordings. The biography parts of the studio analysis/feature were very good and informative and of interest to those not acquainted with Zappa's music. Learn more about Tina and the Ikettes and try not to be turned off by some very dry performances from Zappa plays Zappa. The ZPZ sections were really the only parts that were not excellent (I know they have to sound better than that!) the video is a very interesting piece which is accessible to both serious music nerds and non Zappa fans.

3 out of 5 stars more music less talk.......2007-06-15

To the die-hard frank fan this historical footage will be invaluable. But to regular fans or to the person who may wear an occasional python boot it will be disappointing. Not enough music and to many interviews.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-06-12

Wow, a great DVD. Haven't seen any other episodes of this series but this is excellent. Not exactly an unauthorized biography but great insights into Z's processes and nice tidbits like tina turners uncredited background vocals on Dinah Moe-Humm (you can almost imagine Ike with his hands around her throat)and insightful inteviews with those involved. Plenty of ex-bandmates (see Aynsley Dunbar for one, and all The Grandmothers for others) have had nothing nice to say about Z so its nice to see soe home cooking. Here's a vote for more of these - he made over 70 albums while alive, so lets see more.

4 out of 5 stars A bit too much wasted on off-topic tabloid food.......2007-06-12

More should have been spent on the testimonies of other surviving members of the Mothers of Invention - I am not sure the actual name of this band is even mentionned once! - or at least of the few that made it in the final script or accepted to be part of it. Long time Zappa wizes like George Duke and Ian Underwood must have had tons of insights to share on the learning, arranging and performing of this music, yet so little remains here. (Who IS this guy with the cap!?) Luckily, we have Ruth Komanoff's brilliant and slightly didactive demonstration of her tuned percussion skills, love of Zappa's music and wildly amusing account of how her marimba came to be electrically amplified. Zappa's elder son Dweezil comments at the mixing board about the master tapes, and this is also very precious and quite revealing, especially for those who think these are merely "joke albums".

Neither on Apostrophe nor Over-Nite is there a single song related to groupies (had it been "Fillmore East June '71" and "200 Motels", it would have been different), and Zappa had said before in interviews that "Dina-Moh Hum" is a fictitious tale. But the steamy ditty is taken as pretext to stray off towards tabloid-type nurishment for too long in such a short program. And they should have also take the time to explain who the character in "I'm The Slime" really is, for those who can't read.

But a very good documentary all in all, if not at premium cost.

Amazon.com essential video

This pop-cultural phenomenon has been performed on stage for more than 50 million patrons in 26 countries for almost 18 years, churning more than $2 billion in ticket sales. Now that Cats has finally made it to the small screen, attention must be paid not just by fans of this critic-proof show, but also by those entertainment mavens who have somehow avoided Cats until now. The video version has been restaged but, alas, not really reconceived for its new medium.

The video cast, assembled from London, Amsterdam, and New York productions, is competent. Ken Page as Old Deuteronomy, Jacob Brent as Mr. Mistoffelees, and Elaine Paige--the original London Grizabella, the Glamour Cat well past her prime--are a great deal more than that. Paige has toned down her theatrical belting of her big number, "Memory," and allowed the faded ruin of her character's soul to prevail in close-up. For all the "covers" of her signature song, Paige's version remains definitive. The video is, by definition, more intimate, not always a good thing: costumes are even more Halloweeny in garish close-up, the cats less cuddly without that all-important interaction, the stage's appropriately midnight lighting transmuted to a Las Vegas neon. And the chorus of cats in production numbers is even clunkier and more amorphous in two- and three-shots.

The one complete newcomer to the cast is the 90-year-old icon among English actors John Mills, a delight as Gus the Theatrical Cat. Sir John and his character show the youngsters how it's done in close-up, largely behind the eyes, abetted by a heart-tugging delivery of his one song. Yet virtually all of the songs are lip-synched, further robbing the video Cats of its onstage seeming spontaneity. It's clearer than ever that Lloyd Webber's music is mostly twaddle, with the important exception of "Memory," which instantly and rightly became one of the genuine theater standards not dependent on context, in the vein of Stephen Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns." On the plus side, most of the Cats characters and lyrics, from T.S. Eliot's 14-poem Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, are far better defined and understood from the video version. --Robert Windeler

3 out of 5 stars Sound quality?.......2007-07-05

Did anyone else notice the lapses in the songs as I did, or am I going deaf?!?! I have both the video and dvd of this production, and it seemed like in the dvd:
1) the tempo in "Rum Tum Tugger" was too slow and,
2) during "The Pekes and the Pollicles", the barks could not be heard.
Strange to me- I'm curious as to whether or not anyone else had the same experience. :)

1 out of 5 stars HATED THIS MOVIE/MUSICAL!!!.......2007-06-19

Oh.. it was horrible! This movie is supposed to be the "greatest of all times" but it's a bore. First of all, the movie (musical) just doesn't make sense. My dad explained to me that they are suppposed to pick some cat to go to earth or something like that. I'm waiting there like forever waiting to see what is going to happen but the cats just keep singing songs about some of the cats in their "tribe". Finally, this person comes and is supposed to choose one of the cats though suddenly they start singing so many songs again. I was so agravated, I left the room.

Later on , when my dad had finished watching the movie, he said that I hadn't missed anything at all.

Also, during the songs about the "tribe, there are people that are wearing revolting costumes and dance in a way that is also pretty revolting.

I would not recommend this movie to anyone unless you think this plot is intresting or unless you have a lot of paitence!

4 out of 5 stars CATS.......2007-05-22

Andrew Lloyd Webber is a true genius. He has taken T.S. Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats", a loose collection of poems, and has added characters and songs to create a cohesive story. This is a "staged" production, as opposed to a "stage" presentation. As such, there are aspects of it that are both positive and negative. For those who prefer live theater, you may be a bit disappointed. For those who just enjoy the music and dance, you will not. This format allows for greater instrumentation in the soundtrack as well as permitting some special effects you can't see in a live stage production. The bonus features give some insight as to the process behind the project as well as introducing a few of the performers. Overall, this is a very nice production, despite the exclusion of the story of Growltiger. Was this a move for political correctness?

4 out of 5 stars Cats - The Musical (Commemorative Edition).......2007-05-12

The delivery was fast and the price was fair, but I was disappointed that as a commemorative edition there was no poster, booklet, anything at all in the case other than the cd. It led me to wonder if this was indeed a brand new item as advertised.

5 out of 5 stars This is Awesome.......2007-05-10

I have always been a huge fan of this musical,CATS,ever since I was little I would beg my mom to go to my grandparents house to watch this musical, they had the VHS. I wanted to know how they did everything on this movie. Now that I have the DVD I can watch how they did the make-up,the rehersals, the original broadway show. This is the most Amazing musical ever. It's even better when you watch how they did everything.

Words cannot capture the delights of The Triplets of Belleville, an astonishing animated movie from the mind of French director Sylvain Chomet. In fact, there are only a few spoken sentences in the entire film; most of the soundtrack is a mix of squeaks, barks, and the jazzy music of Benoit Charest. A bicyclist is kidnapped from the Tour de France by mysterious gangsters; his grandmother travels to the city of Belleville (which has a sardonic version of the Statue of Liberty in its harbor), where she tracks him down with the help of a musical trio gone to seed, the Belleville Triplets. This hand-drawn movie is unlike anything you'll see from Disney; every scene mixes the silent comedy of Jacques Tati and Buster Keaton--in which the world of objects subtly fights with living beings for mastery--and the bouncy hop of Betty Boop. Unique and mesmerizing. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Definitely European.......2007-07-05

What is it about Japanese animation that inspires such obsession in its fans? I can't tell that good Japanese animation is any better than good American animation or good anyone-else's animation. It's different, certainly, and it may be a matter of taste, but just because one doesn't like something doesn't mean it's bad. (I personally don't care for the drawing style, movement, and freakishly large eyes of anime. I don't think it's bad, it's just not my thing.)

This was definitely a European movie. If you liked _Schultze Gets the Blues_, you'll like this.

It was . . . weird. Really weird. I'm not sure how the word "delights" made it into the original review because, even though I didn't dislike it, I would never have called it "delightful"

Don't even start to think it's a children's movie. The fact that it has no subtitles doesn't matter because there is almost no dialogue, and what little there is can be figured out without translation. A lot of it is genuinely creepy. It did make me think of Buster Keaton--Champion even grows up to look like Keaton, with bug eyes and a high-bridged nose--but it also reminded me of darker things like James Thurber's _The Thirteen Clocks_ and the creepy minimalism of old "Pink Panther" cartoons. I liked the animation but I would not have called it "pretty". The colors are mostly grays and browns; things are heavily stylized and distorted; the movement reminded me a bit of _Wallace and Gromit_.

My complaints are not that it was so weird, just that I thought it was overrated. It was the kind of thing I often like--dark humor, essentially a silent film, surrealist--but I didn't think that the overall story was that creative, or that the different elements in it were particularly well-integrated.

5 out of 5 stars Triplette Fun.......2007-06-08

This is one of my favorites of all time. You don't have to know any language to understand what is going on. The little aspects of life in the cartoon are so commonplace that it makes it easy for a wide range of people to relate to the dog, grandma, etc. And the music is so fun.

5 out of 5 stars The wonderful darkess of toe tapping laughter.......2007-05-17

I loved the Triplets of Belleville. If you want a negative review look somewhere else. I fully expected to be the movie of the year. Honestly! But then I think animated actors are much more fun than live ones. It's dark. I like dark. It has some really funny twisted sequences. I like that. The dog is wonderful. The Tour de'France scenes are wonderful. The music? It'll get into your brain and play on forever. Did I tell you I liked this movie?

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2007-05-16

For those who like animation or foreign movies that tells a story with art this is THE movie.
With almost no dialogues and so many expression from this old ladies you can capture all the emotion.
I just wish it had extras from the production of the movie.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-05-02

This is simply one of the best animated movies to come out in...ever? As an artist, I know something is great when it goes beyond inspiring me in my work and instead leaves me paralyzed! Had to sit on my hands for a few days after this, and have seen it many times over. Who cares what the story is when the drawing is this good?

5 out of 5 stars Richard Simmons - Disco Sweat.......2007-05-30

Since I bought this for my younger sister, who grew up during the 70's, I'm not the one to review this product. I did watch it briefly with my sister to make sure this is the one she wanted. I'll think she will like it once she gets into it so far I haven't heard a yah or a nay.

5 out of 5 stars You're Gonna Sweat.......2007-05-13

I find this to be an excellent aerobic workout. The first few times I did it, I couldn't make it through the whole thing. There is an excellent ab workout at the end. It's a little bit long, but with the dvd, you have the option of skipping to another part if you don't have the time (or energy) to do the whole thing. Richard Simmons makes it fun, and the old Disco songs are great to workout to.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fun, Energetic troop .......2007-04-15

The dancers/pupils are very energetic, charged and SMILE a lot, which makes this excercise Motivational and fun. Even if you're just watching it for the fun of it.
It'll put a smile on your face, maybe have you go out and buy some hip clothes too.

5 out of 5 stars Burn, baby BURN!.......2007-02-23

I bought this when I was like 14 or something, not knowing who Richard Simmons was and saw it in the infomercial program. It came in a set with the Tone video or something I forgot. But I couldn't follow it so I decided to let it dust away in the cupboard.

Now I'm 23 and I've gotten fat and wanna lose weight so I decided to exercise again. Since I love dancing so much (I was a dancer in my skinny years lol) I tried those hip hop dance workouts but non can make me really SWEAT without aching my body! The moves are fun yet cheesy and looking at 'large' people dancing in the background energetically motivates me even more because if they can do, so can I! Unlike all other workout videos that I own, they have skinny dancers and I couldn't follow their hardcore workout when I'm fat and heavy.

Unfortunately I own the VHS version so the picture is grainy and looks like it was shot with a cheap camera, and sound is quite bad...but still bearable. I'm so happy there's a DVD version now.

Some people that complaints about Simmons not instructing the steps and such, chill. After you workout a few times, you'll get the steps and you won't even realize it. For me, I didn't have problems at all because I'm a dancer but even if I wasn't, it's still not that hard to follow because when you've 'mastered' the steps you wouldn't want to listen to Simmons instructing over and over again like you're a beginner. You just wanna keep grooving and sweating and just keep going! Trust me, my other hip hop workout videos have instructions and when I've mastered the steps, those instruction becomes annoying!

I thought this DVD was very well put together. It has a lot of great breakdancing techniques and the background scenes and the camera angles showing the breakdancing techniques makes it clear as to how to perform them. There are two DVDs inside, one for basic moves and another for more advanced techniques. It will keep you coming back to it also because you can't master it all the techniques in a day, and you can learn some breakdance terminology also. Decently priced and cool DVD!

1 out of 5 stars NOT SO GOOD.......2007-05-03

This video looks amatuer in the way it was shot. It looks like it was filmed in someone's basement or backyard. Also, the language is so street I barely understood what they were saying (not everybody is a street kid english please!!). Very disappointed and definitley not worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD, i personally DO recommend this dvd.......2007-04-14

I bought the dvd last year, and I only apologize to the curious possible buyers that it took me so long to get on here and tell you how good the program is. First, the videographers are excellent because when they show the guys dancing, if they're doing a full body dance, they show them head to toe at all times, and whether its the upper body, lower body you ALWAYS know what the dancer is doing which is crucial to learning. Next, it teaches a whole lot of material, street dancing, waves with you body through muscle and joint isolation, the robot, top rocks, advanced/power moves, basic moves, it teaches you everything you need to get your bboy skills goin if you're serious about not only learning to break from a beginners stand point, but also advancing very far. If you master this dvd set you'll rock with anyone out there. Because you'll not only know so many different moves, and aspects of breaking and just street dancing period, that you'll be skilled enough to literally start developing your own style and moves, as well as to update on present day moves that you see in the coming future. You'll be strong enough, and fast enough in your body, and you're mind will just be in that breaking mode. If there are any moves your seeing from the past two years that arn't on the dvd, it's because the dvd was copyrighted in 2004, but if theres any level you need to get to this dvd will definetely advance you to it beyond measure. I'm glad I bought it, I can't say I regret anything from it. Oh i forgot, it has alot of different guys that brought different aspects to the culture of breaking, and if you like researching the dance, theres some names on here that you might appreciate knowing about. Theres a basic moves dvd in the pack, and an power moves dvd, and theres breaking events that you'll see, and just all these different dudes that'll teach you any and everything.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT.......2007-04-04

Actually it is VERY COOL CD i swear it is so clear in everything especially in the accent it is very easy for who don't know a lot in english language & i did a good breaking :P :D WOW i'm now a bboy :D

Description

If you want to learn Hip Hop, Kelly Peters will Make It Happen for you! Kelly's "One Step at a Time" teaching method introduces new production techniques that make it easy to learn even the hardest moves. It's simple to follow because he reverses the picture, so it's just like looking at a dance studio mirror. As a result, when Kelly says "Go right", he moves to your right! He also takes time to break the movements down, very slow, so you don't have to keep rewinding and he uses lots of close ups, slow motion, and split screen so you really get the details of the moves. Kelly teaches the building blocks of true Hip Hop which you can use to make your own combinations. He also explains the elements and history of Hip Hop culture. Kelly is joined by his crew of real kids who help demonstrate dances like The Freak, The Prep and the Bus Stop. The DVD includes special features and three bonus moves: The Harlem Shake, The Wave and The Baby Freeze.

3 out of 5 stars Reality Vs Impressions.......2007-07-03

This video was decent at best. The dance instruction was very well done; however, the dance moves themselves were somewhat bland and basic. The dance moves seemed more fit for young teens or children and would probably be considered embarassing if an adult ever performed these moves in public. The video is more basic than I imagined, and it stays basic throughout the entire video. The bonus moves at the end were cool though.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the Dance Impaired.......2007-05-13

I really loved the 'split screen with front and rear camera angles' technique. My only beef was that the 45 degree rear angle sometimes obscured the instructor's arm/leg movements. But I was usually able to switch my attention to the "mirror image" whenever this happened. Very nicely paced for the those of us who need to see several repetitions of a movement, and, even though I couldn't always keep up with the background dancers in the 'put it all together' part of each segment, I had fun trying.

4 out of 5 stars too basic .. good for kids ..........2007-05-13

I partially agree with one of the reviewers who gave this product a one star. This DVD is not for you if you are already into Hip Hop. It just "educates" you about hiphop and as the product description says, it teaches you the most basic building blocks of hip hop like The Freak, The Prep, the Bus Stop and a few other steps. Go for it if you haven't danced before.

I think the cover photo is misguiding because it makes it look more advanced. Read the product description well before buying it. Do not conclude anything just from the reviews and the DVD cover or title. I take out one star for the misleading cover and title.

5 out of 5 stars all you really need .......2007-05-12

Some say this video only gives you the basics, but unless you wants to be a really showy dancer, you'll get an excellent repertoire moves. You can modify most of them even by changing angles. My ab muscles are really liking it too!

Awesome video- I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Useful&simple.......2007-04-02

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Raw, Real and Remarkable.......2007-06-26

This movie should be required viewing for all aspiring rock stars! (you know who you are) Although at times difficult to watch, it provides a glimpse into the sex, drugs and rock 'n roll life that we all fantasize about living. WUD squelches that fantasy by revealing the harsh, often unpleasant, consequences of life in the *very* fast lane. Whether you're just a curious voyeur, or a lover of great films, this is a MUST see!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-06-16

One of the grittiest and hardest hitting films I have ever seen about rock & roll. It is a reminder that fame and fortune doesn't come easy and often there is collateral damage to family and friends. The movie was riveting from start to finish. Warning: This film is extremely graphic and disturbing, no one under 17 should be able to see this. 5 stars!

Does it get any better than this? Canadian torch singer and pianist Diana Krall is in perfect form in this two-hour Paris concert, recorded in December 2001 shortly after the release of her CD The Look of Love. In her band, guitarist Anthony Wilson and bassist John Clayton get the lion's share of attention, but the entire ensemble (including lush strings from the Paris Symphony Orchestra) provides flawless support for Krall, whose skill on a Steinway is as impressive as her smoky interpretations of vintage standards and ballads. Inspired by guest conductor-arranger Claus Ogerman, Krall can surprise with subtleties (like a delicious hint of the Beatles' "Day Tripper" in her closing of "All or Nothing"), or glide into solos with a master's flair. Matching the music beat for beat, the camera coverage and editing are intimate without being obtrusive, making this a bit of jazz heaven here on earth. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Recorded live at the Paris Olympia on December 1, 2001, Krall's classic style blends equal parts artistic vision, hard work and determination. The British Columbia native began playing piano at the age of four and now has five stunning albums behind her. She made her debut with the critically acclaimed Only Trust Your Heart and the album topped the Billboard jazz charts for the most of 1998, earning Krall a Grammy nomination. She went on to win a Best Jazz Vocal Performance Grammy for 1999's platinum-selling When I Look in Your Eyes and became the first jazz artist in 25 years to be nominated in the Album of the Year category.

Diana Krall is truly amazing...one of the best Jazz Pianists I know of and a voice & style that is unique in all the World. This is her first live concert recording from Grammy winning Diana Krall, recorded at the Paris Olympia Theatre winter 2002. The concert is classic, with 90 minutes of the best of Diana's mastery of keyboard with her mainstay Quartet- Anthony Wilson (guitar); John Clayton,(bass); and Jeff Hamilton (percussion) enhanced by guests John Pisano, and Paulinho Da Costa. Of all the Krall albums...this DVD counterpart of the CD...with 17 songs (4 more than the CD release) is a "must have". With intimate video angle shots..you will feel you know Diana and the team at the end of the concert!

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Combination of Krall At Her Best!.......2007-01-11

Even if you're "on the edge" when it comes to liking Diana Krall, you need to add this DVD to your collection. Everything from the material, to the guys in her group, to the Paris orchestra, to Al Schmidt's great recording prowess, to the unobvious video capture...it's all here.

Not much jazz spoken in this 1980 version of the Jolson classic, directed by Richard Fleischer (The Vikings) and starring a very tentative Neil Diamond as a cantor's son who would rather sing commercially than in a synagogue. The soundtrack is tedious, the portrait of L.A.'s music industry preposterous, and Diamond (despite his talents as a singer-songwriter in the real world) can't help but look like a speck on the wall in the presence of Laurence Olivier, who plays his father. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars - Neil Diamond... songs that touch our hearts!.......2007-05-13

Neil Diamond plays the roll of Yussel, the son of a Jewish Cantor who is expected to follow the traditional role of five previous generations of Cantors, dedicating their lives to guide a congregation through music.

As he seeks his own individuality, he defies his father, played masterfully by Sir Laurence Olivier, who is very unhappy to see his son attempting to step out of the role he was "born" to be, for to have received such a voice from God... has to mean that he must be a Cantor at the Synagogue.

The relentless pursuit of his dream, takes Neil Diamond from New York to California, leaving behind his wife, a woman he grew up with and was supposed to be his companion for life.

But the wife does not follow the husband's dream, she was quite happy with all she had, a school, a Cantor for a husband, and a role... center stage in the lives of the families that formed the congregation of their synagogue.

In California, Neil Diamond meets Lucie Arnaz, playing the role of the vibrant, go-getter young woman who, upon hearing him sing for the first time, knows she is meant to see him achieve his dream.

They fall madly in love and together set out to make a popular pop singer out of Yussel. At some point the wife comes out to California to try to take him back to New York and some of the lines between these two women are simply superb. When the wife, played by Catlin Adams asks Lucie Arnaz about the relationship that is taking place in California... and how far it has actually gone, Lucie replies "I offered him my body and he settled for a pizza."

But Neil Diamond stays in California and one day is visited by the father who dreams of taking his son back to his beginning... back to continue the family tradition of being a Cantor. The son tells the father he must stay, and when the father sees the new woman in his son's life, he rips his clothing, a tradition to communicate that for him, his son is now dead!

In the end, the family is reunited, but some of the scenes between father and son are priceless jewels of attempting to step out of traditional roles.

A dear friend of the family visits Yussel and asks that he return in his role of Cantor for the festivity of Yum Kippur. His father is now too old and too ill due to high-blood pressure to sing. He says that Yom Kippur, the day of atonement, is the Jewish day of repentance, and reconciliation. So... there is no better time like the present for father and son to reunite.

When Neil Diamond returns to the Synagogue, he delivers some of the best lyrics of this movie... the song is deeply moving.

The movie opens and closes with the timeless classic "America" a song that for all of us, immigrants, reaching US soil in search of liberty, opportunity and the pursuit of happiness, this remains the most moving music of all.

As with Neil Diamond the best part of the movie are the songs, and here we get the best of Neil Diamond. Hava Nagila, Adon Ojom, You Baby, Love on the Rocks, Amazed and Confused, Summer Love, Hello Again, Acapulco, Songs of Life, Jerusalem, Kol Nidre "My Name is Yussel" and America.

We are fans of Neil Diamond and have never missed a concert when he has visited South Florida. This newly acquired movie is and shall remain... best in class in our collection. Don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT! Very uplifting, 5 star performances, Top Music.......2007-03-08

songs in the movie were so good that I purchased his greatest hits CD.

5 out of 5 stars One of the 20th Century's Great Rock Stars.......2007-01-25

This is a great film simply because it showcases one of the best performers the rock age has spawned. Neil Diamond is a great composer and a great performer. The story line has been told twice before (Al Jolson and Danny Thomas), yet this film is by far the best of the three. The audience feels his energy both in the film and in the theater. If you are a Neil Diamond fan you simply have to have this work in your film library.

5 out of 5 stars The Jazz Singer- 25th Anniversary Edition.......2007-01-25

Excellent film, This film is almost a parallel of Neil Diamond's life.

The riveting documentary Rize explores the physically astounding Los Angeles worlds of clowning and krumping--both heightened and spectacular styles of hip-hop dance. With roots in breakdancing and the furious response to the Rodney King beating, clowning was launched by Tommy the Clown, a former drug runner turned children's-party-clown, with brightly colored jumpsuits and a psychedelic afro wig. To gather attention, Tommy began to gyrate and writhe in the street; before long, he was not only getting gigs, he'd inspired dozens of other clown groups, all with their own spin on face make-up and Tommy's dance moves. With a little cross-pollination from stripper dance moves and a good dose of aggression, clowning begat krumping, which resembles a cross between an epileptic seizure and ecstatic possession--what one practitioner calls "ghetto ballet." In addition to dancing that will make your eyes pop, Rize interviews dancers like Tight Eyez, La Nina, Lil C, and Miss Prissy, building a portrait of a subculture, culminating in a dance battle between clowns and krumps called BattleZone V. Directed by photographer and music video director David LaChappelle, Rize persuasively portrays these twin dance movements as not only a personal exorcism, but as the effort of a community to escape the corrosive forces of gangs and drugs. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars Crumping .......2007-05-13

I had seen the movie at a friends and I wanted my children to see it. So I purchased it for that reason. They thought it was awesome as did I.

4 out of 5 stars OK.......2007-05-12

This is an ok movie. I like the "battle dance" part the most. That is why I purchased this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Rize is an excellent documentary.......2007-05-12

First off, I thought it said produced by Dave Chappelle, but its actually David LaChappelle who is some random guy. But none the less, the documentary is very detailed very interesting. The basic premise is in two phases. The first phase focuses on the movement of clowning: there is many interviews with Tommy the clown who really started the movement, the clowns that are in his close-nit group, and also looking at all the other clown groups around south central. there are a lot of interviews as well as a lot of dancing footage; all excellent skills.
The second phase is about the movement krumping, sort of a [...] child off-spring to clowning. Krumping is more emotional, more agressive (very aggressive dancing). This phase focuses on the main krumpers in the area, not organized like the clowns more just groups of individuals getting together. They discuss the history and the future of krumping. this dancing isn't something I find as cool but it's none the less very impressive, the emotion.
The culmination of the two groups come together at the end of the movie to have a major dance off hosted by Tommy, between the clowners and the krumpers. The dance off is rediculous, the skill and the moves are amazing. I wouldn't completely agree with the outcome but that's not what the movie is about. The end is all interviews about the lives of those involved. The move is extremely detailed, amazing insight into the lives of the people of do these activities from nearly 8 years old all the way up to full grown adults all coming together for one purpose. If you love dancing and want to understand the culture better this will be the best choice hands down.

5 out of 5 stars visual miracle!.......2007-03-26

This documentary is both and eye opener to a reality i was unknown to and eye candy! David laChepelle is a color god, edits the documentary like a masterpiece, and the end result is a roller coaster of emotions and color, the movie wasnt sped up in any way, thats crazy, you either krump or youre not

4 out of 5 stars Deja Vu!.......2007-03-04

The best thing and the most instructive information in this movie is that the people learned in their OWN way how to heal and decompresss AND that their moves are unbeknownst to them just like authentic moves in Africa which they have been denied. That's wonderful and sad.
