Over the course of three nights at Hollywood's Pantages Theater in December 1983, filmmaker Jonathan Demme joined creative forces with cinematographer Jordan Cronenweth and Talking Heads... and miracles occurred. Following a staging concept by singer-guitarist David Byrne, this euphoric concert film transcends that all-too-limited genre to become the greatest film of its kind. A guaranteed cure for anyone's blues, it's a celebration of music that never grows old, fueled by the polyrhythmic pop-funk precision that was a Talking Heads trademark, and lit from within by the geeky supernova that is David Byrne.

The staging--and Demme's filming of it--builds toward an orgasmic release of music, rising from the bare-stage simplicity of Byrne, accompanied only by a boom box on "Psycho Killer," to the ecstatic crescendo of "Burning Down the House," by which time the Heads and additional personnel have all arrived on stage for a performance that seems channeled from heaven for the purpose of universal uplift. (God bless Demme for avoiding shots of the luckiest audience in '80s pop history; its presence is acknowledged, but not at the viewer's expense.) With the deliriously eccentric Byrne as ringleader (pausing mid-concert to emerge in his now-legendary oversized suit), this circus of musical pleasure defies the futility of reductive description; it begs to be experienced, felt in the heart, head, and bones, and held there the way we hold on to cherished memories. On those three nights in December 1983, Talking Heads gave love, life, and joy in generous amounts that years cannot erode, and Demme captured this act of creative goodwill on film with minimalist artistic perfection. Stop Making Sense is an invitation to pleasure that will never wear out its welcome. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A classic concert performance enhanced.......2007-07-01

I bought this for my nephew to introduce him to my generation of music favorites. Pleasantly surprised by the add-ons included in the DVD which didn't come with the video when I got it years ago. Still a concert worth watching repeatedly. Glad to have the DVD bonus material.

5 out of 5 stars The next best thing to being there.......2007-06-24

Jonatham Demme's concert film captures the Talking Heads at the height of their powers in 1983. Fans of the band will not be disappointed, and I don't think anyone else who comes to this film with an open mind, open ears, and open eyes will, either. It begins with David Byrne alone on a bare stage, where he performs an acoustic version of "Psycho Killer" with a boom box providing the percussion. The band members and supporting musicians come on stage, set up, and join in during succeeding numbers as the music becomes steadily more layered until we arrive at the explosively exhuberant performance of "Burning Down the House" that ends the picture. Byrne's quirky personality, the exquisite musicianship of the band, the varied influences of the songs, and everyone's sheer love of making music are on full display here. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Is this MY Beautiful DVD?.......2007-06-13

This recorded concert of David Byrne and The Talking Heads may not be the greatest concert ever captured on film (as the DVD jacket claims it to be) - but it's a very good concert.

The concert includes many of the classics Byrne is known for as well as several songs I hadn't heard before. The DVD should have made captioning available for the songs though, because, as with a lot of music of the past few decades, the words get smothered by the amplification, by crowding the mike, and by the background wall of sound. And with Byrne especially, you want to hear the words. He is the e.e.cummings of rock lyrics - skewering, lamenting the humdrumness that people work themselves into. His "Once In A Lifetime" is like cummings' "Anyhow Town."

The lighting is well-done and evocative though, and conveys the mood of the songs even when you can't hear all the lyrics.

But best of all is the choreography. Byrne once again transforms himself into a live and lanky puppet, yanked on my unseen strings, buffeted and punched by forces that remain hidden behind-the-scenes. Several of his background singers are equally talented at that loose-limbed sort of pantomime. They become masters of topsy Terpsichore. They hang it like rag doll prizefighters - never quite getting the best of their opponents, but getting their licks in nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars el mejor concierto grabado, por mucho.......2007-06-08

The most phenomenal recording in rock & roll history is thoroughly examined in Pink Floyd: The Dark Side of the Moon. The Floyd's 1973 masterpiece remained on bestseller charts for nearly 14 years, and its enduring importance is honored here by all four members of Pink Floyd and key personnel (engineer Alan Parsons, mixing supervisor Chris Thomas, sleeve designer Storm Thorgerson, and others) who played essential roles in the landmark album's creation. Produced for the Classic Albums series that originally aired on VH-1, this thorough and thought-provoking study highlights a track-by-track dissection of the LP's master tapes (including the spoken-word passages that bookend the album), superbly interlaced with archival footage, early demo tapes, concert animations, and latter-day acoustic performances by David Gilmour, Roger Waters, and Richard Wright to demonstrate each track's contribution to the final mix--a sonic exploration that extends to the illuminating bonus features. Informative interviews abound (including Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke), and much-deserved credit is given to saxophonist Dick Parry, solo vocalist Clare Torry, and former Capitol Records chairman Bhaskar Menon, who fostered the album's U.S. commercial success. For Floyd fans, musicians, and studio technicians alike, this is a must-have addition to any DVD library. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" Classic Album is the creative story behind the masterpiece: "Dark Side Of The Moon". "Dark Side Of The Moon" transformed Pink Floyd from art house favorites to global, stadium superstars. Prior to 1973, Pink Floyd maintained a relentless gigging schedule and by the time they came to record "Dark Side Of The Moon" had already created many of the basic tracks. "Dark Side Of The Moon" would be the first Pink Floyd (post Syd Barrett) album where Roger Waters would supply all the lyrics around a concept: The Circle of Life. With the timeless qualities of its production and musicality, allied to the hypnotic evocation of its central themes - alienation, paranoia, madness, war and death, "Dark Side Of The Moon" would become the album that would dominate the 70's and 80's (with a record number of 741 consecutive weeks in the Billboard 200). This program takes an in depth look at the making of the 1973 album. All four members of the band Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright are featured in exclusive interviews. Roger, David and Richard play songs and demonstrate themes from the album. Alan Parsons (the original engineer) takes you through the multi track tapes giving a unique insight into the musical fabric of the record and the program is illustrated throughout with archive footage. "Dark Side Of The Moon" with its combination of great songs, inventive effects and one of the best known sleeves ever, tapped into the world's collective subconscious and became a landmark in Rock history and a truly Classic Album. Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" Classic Album is the creative story behind the masterpiece: "Dark Side Of ThThanks for all your help.e Moon". "Dark Side Of The Moon" transformed Pink Floyd from art house

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME EDITING.......2007-06-17

I gave this as a gift. We watched it then I took it back for MY collection. I'm no friend when it comes to Floyd. This DVD exposes some amazing tracks and never before seen (and heard) stuff that blew my mind. Alan Parsons sits at a mixing board and plays with the MASTER TAPES right before your eyes like it was nothing at all. Sheesh.

Again, this blew my mind. What a great DVD. A MUST for Floyd fans!

5 out of 5 stars Insightful glimpse into a brilliant album........2007-06-01

First I want to say that the Eagle Rock series Classic Albums is sheer quality. I have several of these DVDs and I have not been disappointed. I think this one is the best one so far (probably because Dark Side is my favorite album). Anyway, this DVD gives great insight into the writing, recording, and producing of Darkside. It has interviews with all the members of the band and Alan Parsons. There is a crap load of bonus material. If you love Dark Side and you are even remotely interested in what is involved in the creation of a brilliant album than this DVD is an absolute must. I have watched this one more than once simply because there is so much information to absorb and it is extremely interesting. Oh by the way avoid the hacky Wish You Were Here documentary, it is not part of the Classic Albums series and it is not from Eagle Rock.

5 out of 5 stars Best Historical Rock and Roll Documentary Ever Produced.......2007-05-12

I've never seen a historical rock documentary go into as much fascinating detail as this one does.

I was most impressed by the fact that the producers were able to get the original recording enginner, Alan Parsons, in the studio with the original master tapes and walk through the recordings track by track giving you a glimpse of the small pieces that make up the whole of this great recording.

If the other artists and albums in this "Classic Albums" series didn't suck so hard, I'd buy every single one of them. Unfortunately, out of the whole work of these documentaries, there are only 2 or 3 projects that interest me in the slightest. I do, however, plan on investing in other DVD's from this series that feature artists that I like.

For any Floyd fan, this is a must-own.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!!!!!1.......2007-05-12

As a big Pink Flody fan, this movie could have been a still cam on the recording of "On the Run" and I still would have given it 5 stars! HOwever, to anyone that is even slightly familiar with The Dark Side of the Moon, this is a must watch DVD!

5 out of 5 stars Superb DVD.......2007-03-26

I am a big fan of David Gilmour and Pink Floyd. This DVD gives you an inside look at what smarts these guys had in creating this album. Very innovative and definitely ahead of their time. I love the acoustic moments in the DVD. A must have for any Pink Floyd fan especially at this price!

Fade to Black is a document of Jay-Z's self-proclaimed final concert; a grand affair that took place before a sold-out crowd at New York's Madison Square Garden in November 2003. (But anyone who follows celebrity news knows that Jay-Z was out of retirement and back performing at the Garden just a year later.) Fade to Black is a legitimately powerful record of a truly historic event in the annals of rap. Muttering offhand narration with typical bored, streetwise affect, Jay hails the concert as a momentous occasion for being the first time a hip-hop show was allowed to headline at the Garden.

It's unlikely that the full impact of the live performances will hit home to viewers unfamiliar with Jay-Z and his Roc-A-Fella Records stable of artists. Another frustration is trying to identify the array of visitors who trade raps on Jay's stage. Included in the star-studded lineup are Missy Elliott, Foxy Brown, Pharell, Ghostface Killah, Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek, and R. Kelly. One unmistakable figure--and we do mean figure--is Jay's squeeze Beyonce, who raises the temperature and the roof with her skimpy outfit, flowing hair, soulful yowl, and sexed-up dance routine that leaves her boyfriend and the whole of Madison Square Garden slack-jawed with animal desire.

Twenty cameras captured the event, and some of the most powerful sequences are sweeping moves across the swirling, blissed-out masses as they lip sync along in perfect unison with Jay-Z's complex, profane, quick-witted raps. Less effective are intermittent cutaway segments that show the artist in various studio settings working up beats and rhymes. These amateurish home video breaks may give some insight to Jay's perfectionism and dedication to his craft, but they detract from the visceral power of the beautifully executed performance footage. --Ted Fry

Description

FADE TO BLACK takes a look at the rapper's career, providing a backstage glimpse during the concert and showing how his last album was conceived. Narrated by Jay-Z himself, the film features notable guest performances by Beyonce, Missy Elliott, Mary J. Blige, R. Kelly, Pharrell Williams, Foxy Brown and appearances by P. Diddy and 2004 Grammy-winner Kanye West.

5 out of 5 stars My Inspiration.......2007-06-05

This film shows Sean Carter is the most positive light. I see a man with a strong work ethic and so much drive. He's hungry for success and he never settles for anything. He always aims higher. I think I enjoyed the studio footage more than the actually concert footage. Much love goes out to Jay Z and his production crew!

5 out of 5 stars An Authentic Peek.......2007-05-29

I recently began seeking out hip-hop documentaries after watching Jin's No Sleep Till Shanghai. I was pretty skeptical though as to how much a superstar like Jay-Z would be willing to show. It's actually a much more insightful doc than I expected, in terms of understanding the music process. I was surprised how much, and sometimes how little, effort goes into making an album, especially for an artist of Jay's stature. Of course, Fade to Black can also be enjoyed simply for its concert footage, which makes this an excellent film overall.

4 out of 5 stars It is what it is...........2007-05-14

What more can I say?... It's Hova baby.... The concert footage is hot... The studio footage showing the many producers he worked with in creating the Black Album was hotter... Only one reason for falling short of five stars... It wasn't long enough...

5 out of 5 stars "The Last Waltz" of Hip-Hop.......2007-01-08

Jay is one of the few hip-hop artists who can not only fill the seats at the Garden, but play to an audience that large as well. There are tons of guest appearances here and they are universally strong. Even potentially mismatched performances such as Beyonce's appearance work extremely well. The behind the scenes footage of Jay in the studio is riveting. He has a soft, almost hoarse speaking voice yet a powerful voice on the microphone. Like his contemporary Biggie Smalls, he listens to beats with a frighteningly focused intensity and then writes and records all from memory. Some scenes, like when Jay visits Rick Rubin and spits an entirely new verse to the Public Enemy classic "Welcome To The Terrordome" are alone worth the price of admission.

The picture quality of this DVD transfer is decent, though not stunning. Saturation is pushed a little high and the transfer can appear a bit soft at times. The audio track is a well executed surround mix that really captures the acoustics of the Garden. Audio and video sync appears to be quite good.

This is one of the great hip-hop DVDs. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Jay-Z in My Lifetime.......2006-07-29

From begining till the ending rolls, Shawn Carter has done the wittest and most meticulous work to promote his The Black Album in 2003. Well maintained!

While a proposed series of original cast recording sessions for documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker (Don't Look Back) never materialized, Original Cast Album: Company survives as the first and only entry, and it was fortuitous that its subject was the 1970 musical Company. Groundbreaking in its use of a series of vignettes rather than a conventional plot, it was also one of the earliest major works for composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim, the most important figure in musical theater over the last quarter-century. Unlike films, theater productions rarely have a permanent record, so a musical is preserved for posterity by the cast recording. This puts all the pressure on the recording session, as cast member Susan Browning explains during the recording of "You Could Drive a Person Crazy": a live performance can be imperfect, but "this is different. This is the definitive, it's the end-all and the be-all of this song, and... God, that could drive a person crazy!"

For this film, Pennebaker and his crew took three hand-held cameras into the studio and filmed the singers, the orchestra, and the control booth, then condensed the 18.5-hour recording session into a fast-moving 60 minutes. You can see the intensity and sheer enjoyment on the faces of the cast, and record producer Thomas Z. Shepard, show producer-director Harold Prince (both frequent Sondheim collaborators), and Sondheim (a notorious perfectionist) become alternately exhilarated and exasperated as they listen and try to solve various problems. Other interesting moments include an emphasis on the orchestra rather than the lead vocal in "Another Hundred People," and Elaine Stritch's exhausting take after take of "The Ladies Who Lunch." This is a rare look at an important moment in Broadway history, and obviously, it's highly recommended for Broadway fans. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Great Almost Forgotten Cast Album.......2007-02-16

I never saw Company on stage, but was introduced to snippets of it on a DVD about Broadway and realized I would probably like the whole album. So, I ordered it, and I did.
Then I rented the DVD that shows how the cast album was made. .and that was even better! So, I hope that someday Company will tour. . I think it may be doing a Revival on Broadway, but I'd have to check that out. . but whatever the case, it's an interesting and well done cast recording and if you are a Sonheim fan, a must for your collection.

3 out of 5 stars Part Rip-off, Part Astounding!.......2007-01-04

What I expected from this album did not happen and for that I am sorry. You see, I am so old that back in the old, old sixties, I saw this show on the Broadway stage along with Dean Stockwell and broke out in goosebumps when Elaine Stritch sung her classic "Here's to the Ladies Who Lunch!" What's on this DVD is NOT the show, but merely sketches of the rehearsals, much like the beginning of "Follies in Concert." In "Follies" they went on to do the whole programme and went away satisfied. In "Company" that did not happen and when the rehearsal was over they all went home and that was the end of it! I was so shocked that they (the producers of the DVD) would do that, that I didn't believe it and went back to the scene selections looking for a show--there was none. It's not a question of space on the DVD as I stated, they followed that format in "Follies." So, in sum, I adore Stephen Sondheim and I liked the real show "Company"--but the DVD leaves me there wishing for the whole show. This DVD album is a ripoff!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant rare documentary sneak-peek into cast-album making..........2007-01-03

This rare treat from documentary filmmaker Pennebaker is a must-have for any Sondheim lover like me. Elaine Stritch's "hung-over" initial rendition of the classic song The Ladies Who Lunch is unbelievable. The late Pamela Browning sings Another Hundred People beautifully and we get to see most of Beth Howland's (Vera on the TV sit-com Alice) seminal rendition of the Sondheim gem Getting Married Today. I only wished that Pennebaker had released extra footage of more songs, more takes, more banter. The show is currently back on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in a wonderful redux revival starring Raul Esparza and Barbara Walsh directed by John Doyle. In this revival (cast album out soon I am sure) one gets to enjoy the music and lyrics in ways never before enjoyed because of the lack of focus on the visual aspects of the show. This DVD is a worthy testament to a brilliant classic multi-Tony-winning piece of marvellous musical theatre history.

5 out of 5 stars A great documentary by a great filmmaker.......2006-02-28

I can't stop watching this documentary about the recording of the cast ablum of a wonderful musical Broadway show. And I found watching the film with the commentary was as entertaining as watching the movie without the talking heads. The film quality of the transfer to DVD isn't perfect, but it's a minor flaw. To top it off, you listen to great songs by the great Stephen Sondheim. I fully recommend it, especially if you're a fan of the documentary about Bob Dylan, "Don't Look Back," which was made by D.A. Pennebaker as well. Pennebaker just records what's in front of him and let's everything play out without manipulation. It's pure and simple and top-notch filmmaking.

4 out of 5 stars If You Like Broadway Musicals, You'll Probably Like This.......2004-12-23

If you like Broadway, if you like Stephen Sondheim (or even if you don't), if you like behind-the-scenes looks at show business, you'll probaby like this DVD. It's a documentary of how the original cast recording of Company was put together a few days after the show opened in New York.

All one Sunday and through 4 a.m. Monday the tracks were rehearsed, changed, critiqued, redone until with one exception the record was finished. The exception was Elaine Stritch's recording of the big song from the show, "The Ladies Who Lunch." It's a dramatic show stopper, and Stritch just couldn't nail it. All the other cast members had been dismissed, so it was just Stritch, the orchestra, and the recording and creative teams. The more takes they took, the more flaccid her performance became and more tired her voice sounded. This section alone on the DVD is high drama. (They finally recorded the orchestra track and had her come back two days later--when she did nail it, to everyone's relief.)

The program takes less than an hour and there's no voice over (unless you access a fairly interesting interview made 30 years later by Stritch, Harold Prince, the show's Broadway director, and Pennebaker). You move from song to song seeing how adjustments were made, how help was given, how nuances became highly important. Interspersed are snippets of discussion by Sondheim and Prince of how the show came about.

Everyone was acutely aware that they were making the permanent recording of the show's score. The stress, no matter how professional the actors were, had to have been incredible. There's Dean Jones with a fairly brittle voice who was probably chosen for the lead because of his movie name recognition. He clearly looks uncomfortable throughout. At one point the recording supervisor, Thomas Z. Shephard, says to him, "You're very good and I don't want to spoil something that's potentially marvelous..." Uh oh. Pamela Meyers was a young singer in her first Broadway show with a big song to perform, "Another Hundred People." She looks a bit like Brigitte Jones. Sondheim works with her to get a single note where it should be. She is so serious listening to him and he takes the time to be gentle with her. And there's Stritch, an actress who seems unable to turn it off. She draws the center of attention to her just enough to be noticeable. Most things tend to be dramatic with her, and her struggle with "Ladies" is as much self-involved as it is her aiming for excellence.

I'm not one of those who thinks a great deal of Company as a show. I've seen it on Broadway and two or three times in rep. It's a musical about marriage and relationships and the inability to commit...or rather, it's a story about relationships and marriage amongst rather superficial upper-East Side New Yorkers. Those are easy targets and the point of view gets, for me, a little tiresome. But the songs are great, and the show was exciting and different when it opened.

As I said, if you like Broadway musicals, Steven Sondheim, and behind-the-scenes looks, you'll probably get a kick out of this.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent, In-Depth Look at a Queen Masterpiece (4.5 stars).......2006-11-08

In 1975, Queen were a band on the rise. They just had a hit single with "Killer Queen" off the "Sheer Heart Attack" and were set to release their 4th studio album. "A Night at the Opera" marked Queen's breakthrough, which spawned 2 hit singles, one of them being one of the most popular singles of all time. This song of course was "Bohemian Rhapsody", Freddie Mercury's epic, 6 minute long operatic force. John Deacon also contributed a delightful pop hit with "You're My Best Friend." It wasn't just these two singles that made this album so classic though.

Brian May and Roger Taylor give excellent, detailed descriptions of the work that went into recording and writing many of the songs off the album. "Death on Two Legs" was Freddie's heavy opener, and the DVD takes an excellent excerpt of a Mercury interview where he describes the idea behind the song. Brian May goes through his song structures and writing techniques for "The Prophet's Song", "'39", "Good Company" and "Sweet Lady." Roger Taylor explains the drum-work for "I'm in Love With My Car." However, John Deacon doesn't participate in any interviews, and Roger and Brian discuss how he wishes to live the "quiet life." If you are a Queen fan, this is great footage of the band members detailing the work done on these songs, and along with in-depth analysis and summaries of every song on the album, there are extras. Included is a live version of "Sweet Lady" at Hyde Park, Brian May's performance of "'39" and "Love of My Life", performed by Freddie and Brian.

This a worthwhile DVD if you are a Queen fan who loves this particular album, and are interested in how it was composed so brilliantly. Highly recommended to all fans of Queen.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Companion for any Queen CD Collection.......2006-11-05

I'm a big fan of the 'Classic Albums' DVD series. As a fan, I'd rather see and hear about my favorite musicians' triumphs rather than their personal failures (ala' "Behind the Music"). If you're a fan of the group being profiled, you're going to enjoy the behind-the-scenes look at the making of their best-known album. I'm a Queen fan, and I thoroughly enjoyed this video.

There's a lot of archival footage of Queen's mid-70s stage act (though not of the footage shows the band in the studio actually recording their music). Brand-new interviews with both Brian May and Roger Taylor comprise the bulk of this DVD's running time. Brian and Roger are as soft-spoken and thoughtful as always and I've always appreciated their dry sense of humor. Roy Thomas Baker, the album's producer, also appears sporadically as do a handful of executves who were in power at Elektra Records when Queen were under contract there. (Elektra were Queen's American distributors at one time; I am surprised no one from EMI was interviewed as this was Queen's British label). There are some rock journalists and British DJs. A variety of minor rock celebrities (Nuno Bettencourt, Joe Perry) pop in but provide very little. Freddie Mercury, of course, only appears in grainy vintage TV interviews from the early 1980s. John Deacon apparently is letting his bass work speak for itself as he declined requests to be interviewed for this project.

There are many, many highlights to both Brian's and Roger's interviews. Brian, in particular, gently reminds us that although 'A Night at the Opera' was considered Queen's breakthrough album, it really exists in a continuity of musical styles and techniques going back to Queen's first album. Brian plays us excerpts of 'March of the Black Queen' and 'Procession' to bring the point home. It's always a delight to see Brian play his Red Special guitar (or an Ovation) to make a musical point, and Brian freely credits Freddie Mercury for authoring some of Queen's heaviest riffs. It's also a treat to hear Brian's solo acoustic takes on both '39' and 'Love of my Life.' Roger shares a wonderful story in which Groucho Marx gave his blessing to Queen's appropriation of the Marx Brothers' film title to their album, and its an anecdote that isn't often retold.

There are also a series of 'extras' which were apparently cut from the TV Special version of this DVD. For what it's worth, I would have prefered if these sequences were simply re-edited into the continuity of the video. Still, they are great to have and the DVD is stronger for their inclusion.

If you're a Queen fan (especially of the 1970s material), you'll definitely want to own this DVD. While Queen experts may already know most or all of the stories included here, it's a great tribute to one of rock music's most adventurous bands.

    5 out of 5 stars A Cool Masterpiece!..........2006-10-02

It was really a pleasure to see this DVD and realise the renewed personalities of drummer Roger Taylor and guitarist Brian May. If you remember after that Freddie passed away (RIP), they were really in a dark, gloomy mood. I don't remember their tranquility and peace of mind in an interview, since all happened, 6 years ago.
This DVD really is illustrative with an extensive analysis of the recording process song by song with Roy Thomas Baker and Brian May (I don't know if it had would been better to add the comments of Roy Thomas Baker about the making of "Bohemian Rhapsody" that appear in "THE MAGIC YEARS" vol. I), special Roger's drum demostration (almost a clinic!... If you aren't a drummer, with these tips you can understand better the Roger Taylor style), with good introspective interviews (and the reason of the John Deacon's disappearing of the musical scene), with people that lived the bankrup of the band in '74, and finally, the making of an extraordinary masterpiece: the A NIGHT AT THE OPERA album. It's interesting see the live footage and performances between one and another interview, and a good example of this is the live track "SWEET LADY" from the DVD LIVE AT THE HYDE PARK, '76... Good Luck!

3 out of 5 stars very weak audio.......2006-09-07

I think their original intention was to give you an insight to the behind the scenes making of the album...what you end up with is a very light overview of what happened. Lacking the presence of Freddie and John Deacon...most of what you're hearing and seeing are assumptions and opinions of half a band. They really aren't sharing any secret studio tricks with you that hadn't been made available at earlier dates.

I agree with the other reviewer who commented....since when are Joe Perry...Nuno Bettencord and Ian Hunter considered Queen experts.....at least Ian was playing the same local London bar circuit back in the pre-fame days as Queen were..and was classified as "glam rock"..so they climbed up from the same streets.

I wasn't very pleased with the audio.....very weak output.

My bottom line opinion is: The remainer of Queen are just cashing in on anything they can use to generate more income. This video is just a trip down memory lane with some of the people involved in the making of a great album. Just as they are doing by touring with Paul Rodgers and billing themselves as Queen and Paul Rodgers....They need to come up with a new name to represent their project...Queen died when Freddie did....and John Deacon pretty much made his mind known when he refused to be a part of any further musical projects. Sometimes you need to let go and move on.

    5 out of 5 stars Buy it.......2006-05-13

This is a great DVD. For me, the original album gets only 4 stars. While brilliant, it has a couple of uninteresting tracks (Good Company, Sweet Lady and God Save The Queen). The rest though, Rocks!!!
The Making Of DVD is incredible. So interesting, I love hearing Brian and Roger talk. Watching them play is worth the price of the DVD alone.
I always thought '39 was about the Second World War. Silly me.
For me, I would love to hear the original 9 minute version of Bo Rhap and hoped it would be on here. It isn't which is a shame. Perhaps one day it will surface.
My version has the DVD of Night At The Opera (released on its own a couple of years ago) included, the 5.1 surround sounds amazing.
Hopefully they do A Day At The Races next as that is my favourite Queen and All Time album.

With voyeuristic intensity, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster explores the intricate connections that are created, nurtured, and challenged between members of a long-lasting band. That this intimate odyssey of group therapy and self-discovery involves Metallica--the most successful heavy metal group of all time--is just one reason this film is so uniquely fascinating. Having proven their documentary skills with Brother's Keeper and Paradise Lost (which included Metallica in its soundtrack), filmmakers Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky spent two years with Metallica as the band survived the defection of long-time bassist Jason Newsted, struggled to record St. Anger, and recruited $40,000-per-month "performance enhancement coach" Phil Towle to counsel members James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, and Kirk Hammett as they confronted alcoholism, creative obstacles, and themselves in an effort to determine the viability of Metallica's future. With sincere hope, honest discussion, and the hiring of new bassist Robert Trujillo, Metallica battle their personal and professional demons, showing the vulnerable side of a business that thrives on raging testosterone. The effort pays off for everyone involved, especially the fans: Like the ultimate backstage pass, Some Kind of Monster is a healing journey into the hard-beating heart of rock & roll. --Jeff Shannon

    Description

Featuring the most successful heavy metal band of all time, METALLICA: SOME KIND OF MONSTER offers a revealing and exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the legendary band as they confront personal demons and their relationships with each other while recording their Grammy-winning album, St. Anger.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Shark Sandwich. ..........2007-06-16

I don't really know where to start: I can't reconcile that the same guys can own the rights to such a brutal character demolition (done entirely hara-kiri style) and be so brave as to allow its unabridged release, yet at the same time be so wet as to be unable, variously, to work for more than four hours a day, have a conversation between themselves without a therapist or, in Kirk Hammet's case, even string an idiomatic sentence together (is it just me, or does he look like Buster Bluth with as poodle wig by the way?). Either they're really contradictory, troubled personalities, or they're just really, really thick. I can't make up my mind.

The creative process and band dynamics are laid bare and revealed to be Spinal Tap all the way - to an extent you couldn't dream was possible (Exhibit A being the lyrics to Frantic: "My lifestyle determines my deathstyle!/My lifestyle determines my deathstyle!/Keep searching/Keep on searching/This search goes on/This search goes on/Keep searching/Keep on searching/This search goes on/This search goes on/" which, stupid though they may seem written down, are exponentially stupider when you watch the lads brainstorming to work them out in the first place. To think that these guys even claimed intellectual property, let alone sued anyone for theft of it!

It is a fascinating document of the decay of mass media corporate rock, implicating everyone from the Record Company to the fans, marked in every case by a pathological lack of self-awareness. Seeing Lars Urlich leading the charge to sue his own fans, and simultaneously monetising his art collection for literally millions of dollars beggars belief, but then is outdone by the extraordinary self indulgence and utter wetness of James Hetfield throughout large parts of the film. Never before has such a hard man heavy metaller revealed himself to be such a lady's blouse. The departing bass player has it right: Hard rockers don't hire therapists. It's lame.

There is a large Spinal Tap element: not only does the documentary spookily similar in content, but Urlich at one point even alludes, correctly, to the "S~ Sandwich" parallel, and Bob Rock (the Ian Faith equivalent) resembles a portly David St. Hubbins.

But for all this, and I don't know how, but the Metallica franchise comes out, ultimately, with a fair bit of credit. They sort out the personal issues (interestingly by creating common enemies outside the band - the radio network and the poor therapist, Phil Towle - against whom they all immediately unify), realise the error of their ways, and round out with a surprisingly humble performance and video shoot amongst the inmates of San Quentin jail. The resulting record, St. Anger sounds like it was quite good too, despite all the indications and expectations to the contrary.

One notes wryly that, despite trying, Metallica has not managed to put out another record since (though have managed to fire Bob Rock!) so perhaps in a year or two we might be treated to *Another* Kind of Monster?

    Well worth a night in.

    2 out of 5 stars Crippled Giants.......2007-06-10

Much like the band's music since 1991, Metallica's Some Kind of Monster is a total dud. All we really get is some "insight" into what makes Lars and James tick, which is essentially power and control over the band (no surprise to fans). Don't get me wrong, I LOVE metallica's old stuff, and regard Lars and James' first four albums as essential recordings. No one is disputing their contribution to heavy metal music, they're kings. But Metallica's crowns fell off long ago.
Lars has managed to turn himself into the most hated figure in rock music, due to his Napster suit, and his incurable case of diarrhea of the mouth. Somewhat surprising (and one of the only "revelations" in the film), is that James is a bigger douche than Lars. He pushed Newsted out of the band, chose his family over his music, and has become the new poster boy for why rock stars should never get sober. Our old friends from "Alcoholica" are all washed up, out of beer and out of inspiration.
They certainly have balls for putting this out. It isn't kind to any of them. How un-rock and roll is this thing anyway? A therapist for a heavy metal band? HA! They all come off like bored, whiny brats, kicking at the dead horse of a once great band, trying to salvage what's already sunk.
I can't tell you how hard this is to watch for fans of the old Metallica. It's like Superman in a wheelchair. Rock and roll, and especially metal, is supposed to be dangerous. It's supposed to be hard, fast, and balls out. It's supposed to be everything Metallica once was. They really have become some kind of monster.

    2 out of 5 stars Hmmmm.......2007-05-14

This should be re-titled: Metallica: The making of St Shibre. I felt this was more a making of, then a documentary of the band falling apart, yes there were some interesting pieces, the interview with poor old Mustaine, James talking about home life, Jason's views on the future of Metallica etc etc... but with a running time of over 2 hours and way too much rehearsal footage I would only recommended only to die hard fans.

Lamentations, a two-hour live 2003 performance DVD, shows off Swedish quartet Opeth's music--which, to simplify matters, can be described as an unwieldy but convincing amalgam of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Rush, and Metallica at their most introspective and uncommercial--to its great advantage, both for fans as well as those unfamiliar with it. Opeth is the rare band that has escaped the narrow confines of the label "heavy metal," a progressive, intensely musical outfit, the group's increasingly subtle music-making has kept the same denseness and complexity of its earlier efforts. Performing the 2003 album Damnation in its entirety, Opeth has mastered a groove-based, moody type of hard rock that's often content to lope along through textured chord changes and instrumental breaks, with acoustic guitar at the forefront. The rest of the concert consists of a half-dozen older, more pummeling tunes that are more conceptually complex and impressive in their always-revealing soundscapes.

Also on the disc is an insightful one-hour-long documentary about the recording of both Damnation and its predecessor, Deliverance; the concert and documentary are shot in anamorphic widescreen, and the audio choices are Dolby Stereo, 5.1 Surround and DTS. --Kevin Filipski

This has got to be one of the best DVD's I've ever seen. Akerfelt and the group are in tip-top shape.I did want to hear stuff from "Still Life and My Arms.." but I can't have everything, the selection was good anyhow.

The atmosphere is dense with high expectations and Opeth delivered some of the best Prog Death metal ever. These guys are more than they are given credit. No band can even touch their abilities to rock.

This is too too bad that Opeth are not the same band as the drummer and the guitar player have left in 2007. Hope the new guys can fill their shoes!!

    5 out of 5 stars great performance.......2007-02-09

Opeth is one of the newer bands i started listening to. I wanted to start from the beginning, so bought their first album. I loved it and continued to buy their entire catalog. Then this DVD came out.

This disc is amazing. They had already proved themselves to me on CD, and i loved the fact that they didn't have a collection of a dozen or so 5 minute radio friendly songs on their albums. They had 10 to 15 minute epics! They aren't content to entertain with short little songs but to take you on an adventure.

So when this DVD came out, I was anxious to buy it and was not disappointed. The entire Damnation album is performed here along with a song called Harvest from an earlier album. There's a great 70's prog rock vibe to this whole thing that i just loved.

The second half of the show is all heavy stuff. Master's Apprentices is played so powerfully that you can't help but get into it. The only real problem i have with this DVD is that no older songs were played.

Many of the songs here are done very well. The Drapery Falls and The Leper Affinity are especially good. The best song here is A Fair Judgment, a great mix of quiet and forlorn music and vocals with heavy, bone crushing guitars and pounding drums. The end of this song is played slower than normal and always has me banging my head in slow motion, if that's possible. HAHA!

The documentary is a nice look behind the scenes and shows them in the studio doing their thing. The interviews are very striaghtforward, but sometimes hard to hear since the sound quality is not the greatest and some band members have accents, which makes it even harder. Too bad this wasn't close captioned. But all in all this is a great document of a very awesome band.

4 out of 5 stars Not as heavy as you'd like, but still A-MAZ-ING.......2007-01-16

I'm gonna make this 1 brief: the making of doc was ok. the concert performance was amazing. like i said in the title, it's not nearly as heavy as most Opeth fans would like, but it is still a very moving performance. they performed most of DAMNATION and then went into the set of heavy tunes, ending with A FAIR JUDGEMENT, one of my all time fav Opeth tracks. Bottom line, if you or someone you know is even the slightest bit of an Opeth fan, BUY THIS NOW!!!

5 out of 5 stars Opeth Live Video Recording! What could be better? Nothing........2007-01-04

Opeth are amazing live, and this DVD captures it. Who needs all of the other extras that are commonly packaged with the main product? Opeth fills the bill with their performance alone. The visual presentation along with the music is an experience not to be missed. That being said, the included documentary of the recording of the albums 'Deliverance' and 'Damnation' is quite entertaining as well. Especially when Steve Wilson comes to help Mikael Akerfeldt produce the albums.

I can say that after having seen so many other metal bands in concert, Opeth are by far one of the most talented bands you can see perform live. You don't need fire-bursts and cannons to energize you when the band takes the stage. Akerfeldt's voice is nearly as amazing live as it is on the studio albums, but with the added peculiarities and nuances of a live performance. This DVD is one you can sit down and watch, or put on in the background as you cook, clean, or entertain guests (supposing they like music based in metal and includes a variety of sounds and elements that are not generally considered "metal").

If you don't have this release and are an Opeth or a metal fan, you are missing out. Pick it up along with all of their studio albums. You (probably) won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars They couldn't have done any better than this dvd.......2006-06-22

When I first bought Lamentations I was getting into the music and buying Opeth's albums, then I found out that Andy Sneap mixed the audio (note that he also mixed Deliverance), I knew that this would be very special. I've been a fan of a lot of records that he's mixed. You name it: Arch Enemy, Nevermore, Exodus, Opeth, 36 Crazyfists, Skinlab, Machine Head, As I Lay Dying, Trivium, Killswitch Engage, Living Sacrifice, Caliban, etc. Then this dvd. It went way beyond my expectations. As I'm typing this, I'm also awaiting the release of Arch Enemy's new dvd Live Apocalypse, also mixed by Sneap. That is gonna kill.

So if you listen to Opeth, you must get Lamentations.

5 out of 5 stars INSPIRING! LEGENDARY! FREAKING AMAZING!.......2006-12-22

This is one of the best music DVD's ever made...its not based on a live concert but the Making of the Chili Peppers LANDMARK ALBUM, "Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic". Its Pure Magick...Rick Rubin and the Chili Peppers working together with INSANE CHEMISTRY! If you are a musician no matter what genre...this is a VERY Entertaining DVD not only that its very educational...you see the boys experimenting with sounds soooo cool! And if you are not a musician...YOU WILL SIMPLY LOVE IT! If you just started listening to the peppers...GET THIS!!!

    5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2006-11-30

Wow, I can't believe someone rated this as only one star. Sure there aren't any live performances, but you get to see the chili peppers making 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik,' Which is considering their most pivotal album. After watching the documentary, I can now listen to their music with a new appreciation. It's so neat watching them record, especially minor musical components of several songs such as "Apache Rose Peacock" and "Mellowship Slinky in B Major." This dvd is a MUST HAVE for any Red Hot Chili Peppers fan, especially if you're into their old stuff.

    4 out of 5 stars They're Red Hot.......2006-11-17

Witness the evolution of the greatest album of all time thru the camera lens of Gavin Bowden. Hear the band talk about the creative process of the album from its inception, the writing, the recording and the production with Rick Rubin. For two months in the spring of 1991, the band set up home and a recording studio in a huge mediterranean style manner. Each band member had their own room, (apart from Chad who travelled to and from the house from his own home everyday). It is interesting for the viewer to re-live the whole process from beginning to end over the 60min documentary. You even feel a sense of accomplishment yourself once the film is over. Although it is filmed in black and white and the sound is a little poor, this is a must see for all chili peppers fans who no doubt, share a spiritual bond with the band and feel this period in the Red Hot Chili Peppers was there best ever.

1 out of 5 stars Are you people crazy?!?!?.......2006-09-15

This DVD sux!! (Compared to what else is out there that is...nothing RHCP really sux!!) It is further compounded by the simple fact that the VHS DOES have complete songs, several of them. At least the one I have does, I have had to prove it to doubters several times in the past.
But the real issue is WHERE ARE THE DVDS FOR "Positive Mental Octopus" and, especially, "Psychedelic Sexfunk Live From Heaven"?!?!?! I have had both on VHS for 15 years and, in my opinion, nothing I have seen tops Sexfunk live. In fact I broke down, bought a capture card and made the DVDs myself. But they're only stereo so I would be more than happy to buy both as official releases in 5.1 sound!!! Until then, nothing else really matters (but I like Stadium Arcadium quite a bit and I hope they put out a DVD of one of those shows!!)
