Amazon.com essential video

When college professor Vivian Bell (Helen Shaver) arrives in Reno in 1959 to get a quickie divorce, the last thing on her mind is romance. A prim intellectual, crippled by a sterile marriage ("We're a professional couple") and hiding behind her education, she moves into a ranch belonging to Frances Parker (Audra Lindley) and tries to keep to herself. But Parker's beautiful, sassy tomboy of a stepdaughter proves to be quite a distraction, and a love affair slowly blossoms. Cay (Patricia Charbonneau) refuses to be bound by convention or by expectations of how a nice girl should behave, and her devil-may-care attitude both attracts and terrifies the nervous professor.

Shaver is terrific as Vivian, and the slow thawing of her character is beautifully paced--you can feel the tension break when she finally lets down her guard. Another strong performance comes from Audra Lindley as Frances. She's a tough old bird with a drinking problem, but Lindley keeps the character from descending into stereotype, and she gives full rein to the tragic side of this lonely woman, especially as she struggles with her reaction to the developing relationship between Cay and Vivian.

There are scenes in Desert Hearts that would be painfully clichéd if they appeared in a heterosexual romance, and even here they only just escape that fate--relying a little too much on significant glances and lines that just don't sound like real conversation. Nevertheless, first-time director Deitch breathes new life into a standard straight-arrow-meets-free-spirit plot, and steadfastly refuses to turn this love story into an "issues movie." Add to that a strong feel for the period and a soundtrack filled with the likes of Patsy Cline and Gene Vincent, and the result is a warm, well-acted film that packs a real emotional punch. --Simon Leake

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars desert hearts.......2007-07-03

This is one of the best lesbian movies of the time. It never grows old.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Bonus Features!.......2007-06-07

I loved the interviews with the lead actresses that come with this new release! The fact that Donna Deitch decided to conduct the interviews herself makes them so much fun to watch. Shaver and Charboneau are both very candid and there's lots of giggling throughout both interviews.

Helen Shaver is an absolute dreamboat and in my ideal world, an interview with her would be included on every dvd that I bought. When she starting speaking about her own nipple, I had to pause the dvd and get a drink of water.

Buy this new release! If you're like me, you'll fall in love all over again.

4 out of 5 stars The Bonus Disc - Info .......2007-06-06

Most people purchasing this item have seen the film. Desert Hearts is a contemporary classic and ahead of it's time when first released. It's a standard now in most every gay-girls DVD collection. This newly released two-disc edition includes some bonus materials.

I'll review the bonus disc as there are plenty of well written reviews of the actual film.

1. The "never before seen footage" of the famous love scene. This is the first bonus item on the extra disc. It is NOT a re-cut extended scene. This is the raw footage from, argueably, the most famous lesbian love scene ever. We are not necessarily given more content, but simply the same content from different angles, over multiple takes.

2. Commentary by director Donna Deitch. Fun and informative.

3. Interviews with the two main stars by director Deitch. To me, this feature is worth the price of this collection. Donna Deitch interviews both Patricia Charbonneau ( Cay ) and Helen Shaver ( Vivian ). These are one-on-one sessions which recall memories of filming and, more importantly, the impact the film had on both actresses. These interview sessions were done in March 2007. The only thing that might have made them more interesting would have been if the actresses had actually been reunited for the interviews. They are each interviewed, separately, by Deitch. While both actresses are fun to watch, it is Helen Shaver and her insights that are the most rewarding.

4. The Theatrical Trailer - This is actually interesting because, while the film hold up strongly, the trailer comes across as rather dated.

All in all, I'd recommend this set. It's a wonderful film, and the bonus disc will add a nice dimension to viewing it again.

5 out of 5 stars coming out.......2007-05-24

i first saw this movie 14yrs ago on bravo.. i knew i felt different about women then men. this movie opened my heart because i had the same feeling as the professor.. within a few days i finally told someone i thought i was a lesbian.... finally i had my identity!!!! this movie will always be close to my heart

4 out of 5 stars Great Classic.......2007-05-23

A truly enjoyable movie once you get past some of the corny lines and scenes. Both women are just beautiful for their time and I loved the transformation of Helen's character because I could relate personally. I would of liked if they would of ended the movie without leaving us guessing where the relationship was going but at least it left us still hopeful!

The prestigious filmmaking trio of producer Ismail Merchant, director James Ivory, and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala had made other critically acclaimed films before A Room with a View was released in 1985, but it was this popular film that made them art-house superstars. Splendidly adapted from the novel by E.M. Forster, it's a comedy of the heart, a passionate romance and a study of repression within the British class system of manners and mores. It's that system of rigid behavior that prevents young Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham Carter) from accepting the loving advances of a free-spirited suitor (Julian Sands), who fears that she will follow through with her engagement to a priggish intellectual (Daniel Day-Lewis) whose capacity for passion is virtually nonexistent. During and after a trip to Italy with her protective companion (Maggie Smith), Lucy gradually gets in touch with her true emotions. The fun of watching A Room with a View comes from seeing how Lucy's thoughts and feelings finally arrive at the same romantic conclusion. Through an abundance of humor both subtle and overt, this crowd-pleasing "art movie" rose to an unexpected level of popular appeal. The Merchant-Ivory team received eight Academy Award nominations for their efforts, and won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, Art Direction, and Costume Design. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Nominated for eight Oscars in 1986, including Best Picture, and winner of three (Costumes, Art Direction and Adapted Screenplay), A Room with a View is the film that defined Merchant-Ivory as the masters of the romantic period piece. A brilliant adaptation of E.M. Forster?s novel, A Room with a View tells the story of the coming of age of Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham-Carter). Longing to burst free from the repression of British upper class manners and mores, she must wrestle with her inner romantic longings to choose between the passionate George (Julian Sands) and the priggish but socially suitable Cecil (Daniel Day-Lewis). Boasting a brilliant supporting cast, A Room with a View is one of the most romantic of romantic comedies ever filmed.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Room With a View.......2007-07-06

One of the finest examples of the longstanding Merchant/Ivory alliance, "Room With a View" is a superbly executed romance set in 1907 and adapted from the book by E.M. Forster. Nominated for eight Academy Awards, the film boasts dazzling sets and costumes, along with note-perfect early turns by Merchant-Ivory regular Carter and an uncharacteristically priggish Daniel Day-Lewis. Don't miss this smart and sumptuous cinematic treat.

5 out of 5 stars Passion, uncorseted , in this E. M. Forster story.......2007-07-06

Take two stuffy, repressed English ladies, pour them into gorgeous Florence of the late 1800's, throw in a few fiery encounters with the native Italians (amorous and/or violent), and watch for the ensuing combustion. Helena Bonham Carter loosens her hair and her heartstrings. Maggie Smith, my favorite character who is the chaperone, also learns a thing or two. The real stars arcing over this production, however, are "bella" Florence itself and the singing of Kiri Te Kanawe in the background, as she delivers her thrilling aria, "O Mio Babbino Caro."

5 out of 5 stars One of My Favorites.......2007-06-06

Now I'm a girl that loves a period piece movie but this is one of my all time favorites. All the roles are great campy caricatures (my favorite is the pompous Cecil), beautiful Florence is the setting and it has humor, romance and adventure.

5 out of 5 stars best movie ever.......2007-05-26

What can I say about is this movie that it does not say in the movie already. Buy, watch the movie, you will see.

3 out of 5 stars Great scenery of Florence, but Just okay movie.......2007-05-22

This is an okay movie with a basic plot. I really wanted to like this movie when I bought it. Do not misunderstand: I liked the movie, but I thought the plot was shallow and it could've been layered more. On the positive side, it was great seeing Florence from a turn of the century perspective. Pretty cool.

Horse lovers young and old will celebrate this utterly enjoyable and marvelous-looking animated film. The titular stallion runs free in the Cimarron (New Mexico) wilderness until a series of men try to master the proud horse, leading to adventures through a U.S. Cavalry fort, Native American settlements, and a railroad camp. Despite a heavy dose of political correctness and realism (the animals don't talk; we only hear Spirit's internal monologue, voiced by Matt Damon), directors Kelly Asbury and Lorna Cook give their hero many only-in-a-movie moments, including an action sequence rivaling any of Rambo's escapes. The stirring mix of 2-D and 3-D animation is absolutely stunning and aptly fueled by composer Hans Zimmer's synthesized score. The film earns one demerit for '80s rocker Bryan Adams's abundant songs--a different singer could have brought more to the film. Rated G but there is some rough treatment of horses shown, so nix the sensitive preschoolers. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars A family favorite.......2007-01-31

this movie is a favorite of our entire family, including the music (we bought the CD). The only part that is mildly concerning is where the colonel orders that Spirit be starved for 2 days in order to break his spirit. the colonel hopes that this will show his men that he can control anything. but you are relieved when Spirit not only refuses to be ridden but escapes.

Good messages. nothing offensive. I secretly hope my [...]will pick this when he wants a movie, as I enjoy it so much myself. My husband is also a fan.

Don't let some of the negative comments keep you from seeing this movie!

But this year his plot gets derailed by a wise-cracking store detective (Mac), a sexy bartender (Lauren Graham -- TV's GILMORE GIRLS), and a kid who's convinced Willie is the real Santa Claus! You're sure to believe in BADDER SANTA: THE UNRATED VERSION -- once you experience this longer, funnier, and more explicit motion picture!

Instantly qualifying as a perennial cult favorite, Bad Santa is as nasty as it wants to be, and there's something to be said for comedy without compromise. The Coen brothers conceived the basic idea and served as executive producers, but it's director Terry Zwigoff (Crumb, Ghost World) who brings his unique affinity for losers and outcasts to the twisted tale of Willie T. Stokes (Billy Bob Thornton), a hard-drinking, chain-smoking, foul-mouthed sexaholic safe-cracker who targets a different department store every holiday season, playing Santa while he cases the joint with his dwarf elf-partner Marcus (Tony Cox). With comedic support from Bernie Mac, Lauren Graham, Cloris Leachman, and John Ritter in his final film, Thornton milks the lowbrow laughs with a slovenly lack of sentiment, warming Bad Santa's pickled heart just enough to please a chubby misfit (Brett Kelly, hilariously deadpan) who may or may not be mentally challenged. As dry as an arid martini and blacker than morning-after coffee, Bad Santa is an instant cure for yuletide schmaltz, and if you think this appropriately R-rated comedy is suitable for kids, your parenting skills are no better than Willie's. --Jeff Shannon

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-01-12

I ordered this version after reading reviews of it and Badder Santa, thinking maybe I was getting something more than the movie I'd already seen and loved. I didn't care for this version. It is lacking a couple of scenes that I think help to tie the story together, and in apparently seeking a more "noir" theme includes scenes that are probably more than I needed to know...like the van backing over the security guy. They killed him, okay, I get it. I also didn't like the ending as much (although I won't give it away for those of you just dying to see it). I will donate this to the Friends of the Library sale and buy myself a copy of the "vanilla" version.

Glenn Savan's depressing and self-loathing novel about a 27-year-old upper-class Jewish widower mired in self-pity after his beloved wife dies, and who finds love and sexual rebirth with a trailer-trash older woman, was brought to the big screen by the competent director Luis Mandoki (When a Man Loves a Woman, Message in a Bottle). But the savage irony in Savan's book has been face-lifted by screenwriters Ted Tally (The Silence of the Lambs) and Alvin Sargent (Ordinary People) into something else entirely: what passes for low-rent "slumming" in Hollywood means hiring sexy Susan Sarandon to play Nora Baker, the poor, uneducated 43-year-old waitress in a White Palace burger joint who strikes up an unlikely relationship with sad Max Baron (James Spader). Widower Max attends a bachelor party for best pal Neil (Jason Alexander) and discovers that the local White Palace has stiffed the boys a whopping six burgers. Max barges into the joint, bent on getting his money back, and meets a testy Nora, who is bemused at the young man's insolence. While driving home, Max stops abruptly at a bar for a drink. Inside, Nora is nursing a vodka and takes a shine to the tuxedo-clad, handsome, and morose younger man. He gives her a lift, she seduces him, and the rest of the movie examines how two such opposites in manners and morals can find happiness. The only common bond they have is great sex and a private tragedy. White Palace nudges at the dark journey and the smashing of illusion that was at the heart of the novel, but there is still a fairy-tale element to the film that negates the earthy essence that distinguished the book. In Mandoki's vision, White Palace is about overcoming class, family, and outside opinion to find true love. In Savan's book, Max wastes into decline while Nora ultimately thrives in the quest for truth, redemption, and self-forgiveness. She becomes his salvation only after he stops hating himself. But mainstream Hollywood shuns making "protagonists" so mad, bad, or sad, and as such, too much glitter is tossed on Spader, while Sarandon, as usual, is the only one who seems to embody and understand her character's angst. She deserved her Oscar for Nora, not the nun in Dead Man Walking. --Paula Nechak

4 out of 5 stars "What you see isn't always what you get!".......2007-05-27

I remember watching this movie long ago and I'd forgotten how sexy Susan Sarandon can be. Because of her age, (and market pressure of course) Sarandon may never be marketed or packaged and sold as sex symbol; but she should be. In White Palace, Sarandon proves my personal inclination that older women have a deliciously ample level of depth capturing and conveying the essence of womens' true sexual prowess. Or maybe this is simply evidence of my admiration for older women. In any event, this is a classy and giving love story that smolders from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars one of my favourites.......2007-05-15

This is one of those movies that you can watch over and over again. A feel good movie that is one of the best around. I love it.

    4 out of 5 stars Mature Romance.......2007-04-22

Don't be fooled by the steamy cover art that would lead you to believe that this is some kind of Zalman King potboiler. There are perfunctory love scenes for sure(Susan, was that a body double?) but this film is a thoughtful exploration of romance between two seemingly disparate persons that avoids both stereotyping and cliche. Both James Spader and Susan Sarandon are superb here in making us believe that their characters could bridge both the generational and cultural gaps in fulfilling a meaningful relationship. My only qualification here is I don't think that certain story elements were fleshed out enough.

    4 out of 5 stars White Palace.......2007-01-12

I like both actors featured in this movie.
Had seen it years ago and remembered it.
I think it is a good love story.

To heck with the kids--this is one of the best holiday presents you can give yourself. Adapted from the children's book by Dr. Seuss, this charming story is one to watch every holiday season. It is just edgy enough to help you forget the more cloying aspects of Christmas, yet it is also sweet enough to remind you of the reason for all that holiday cheer. Animation genius Chuck Jones directed this 1966 television production featuring the voice of Boris Karloff as the mean greenie. Bitter and selfish, the Grinch decides to steal Christmas away from the Whos, the sweet little folk who live at the bottom of his mountain home. When little Cindy Loo Who returns his hateful act with kindness, she melts the old miser's heart. There are many reasons to watch this: inventive wordplay, Karloff's impressive narration, and a very memorable soundtrack. --Rochelle O'Gorman

    Horton Hears a Who!
Chuck Jones was chief animator on this lively adaptation of the famous book by Dr. Seuss. The story of a friendly elephant named Horton who discovers--deep inside a daisy--a tiny city called Whoville with tiny, intelligent residents--this film (fleshed out a bit from the source) is strong on character and has striking, appealing visuals. The little folks of Whoville, with their natural air of aristocracy, are a kick, and when they come to see Horton as a hero for his democratic view of all life big and small, the effect is quite touching. This should be a real treat for kids already familiar with the book, and just might inspire those who haven't read it to pick it up. --Tom Keogh

Love it! Who doesn't love Dr. Seuss and the Who's in Whoville. Great family movie with no advertisements. A must have for any home with or without kids. I have watched it by myself on occasion. I am a BIG Dr. Seuss fan. Check out the great selection of Dr. Seuss books on Amazon our family owns many titles. They great for reading to k-6th graders at school or home.

5 out of 5 stars HIS MEANNESS IN GLORIOUS GREENESS.......2007-05-06

Wow! I just watched this newest edition of the Grinch, and what a difference! The COLORS are FABULOUS! He never looked better! The remastering is, well, masterful; and I never saw this wonderful Christmas feature so beautifully represented.
All the hundreds of times I watched this before have been in B&W by comparison!
"You're a Mean One-Mr Grinch! You have Termites in your Soul!"
Sung by the inimitable Thurl Ravenscroft (what a great name!) who also voiced one of the Ghosts on the Haunted Mansion ride, ( a Singing Bust in the Graveyard) lends a thrilling richness to the feature, as great as the voice of Boris Karloff as the Grinch himself.
An extra feature on this disc is the Making of...including interviews with Mrs Theodore Geisel, AKA Mrs Seuss, and Chuck Jones, who worked closely with his old friend Dr Seuss, at first reluctant to animate his story, but who thawed after seeing the drawings and hearing the great songs, esp the one on Christmas Morning.
Horton hears a Who is included, and this is just wonderful...so sweet.
One day Dr Seuss was sitting at his desk littered with sketches when a breeze wafted in and blew a drawing of an elephant onto a drawing of a tree, which set Seuss to thinking: "What is that elephant doing up in that tree?" which led to Horton Hatches the Egg.
Seuss's wonderful surrealist POV is the child's version of Dali, and another favorite Seuss work of mine is the sets he created for "The 10,000 Fingers of Dr T."
This set also includes Phil Hartman's Grinch special and pencil tests.
But the real star here is the incredible colors and how magnificent the Grinch looks in his splendid coat of bright Green. You've never seen this great feature so beautifully done until you get this version! The packaging is wonderful with sparkles all over the jacket.

    5 out of 5 stars Dr. Seuss's Original..........2007-04-22

The 1966 cartoon version of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" has rightly become a Christmas season classic. Its simple but evocative storyline is brought to life by the pairing of animator Chuck Jones with original artist Theodor Geisel. Boris Karloff's absolutely superb narration is the thing of genius that makes the whole movie work.

The story is familar to anyone who has been young in the last forty years: The Grinch, a Christmas-hater, lives near Whoville, populated by Whos, a cheery bunch who celebrate Christmas with abandon. The Grinch has the stoke of awful inspiration one Christams Eve to sneak into Whoville and steal all the holiday paraphanalia, and stop Christmas from coming. Disguised as Santa Claus, the Grinch makes away with all the presents, decorations, and food, only to discover that he has missed the point about Christmas altogether. His moment of relevation may be the highlight of the whole movie.

This movie is highly recommended as a Christmas Classic suitable for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Still the Best!.......2007-04-17

As a child of 4 or 5 years old, watching this, I have to say that Boris Karloff's rendering of the Grinch gave me literal nightmares. But then I always loved a movie that could enter my slumber, so even the nightmares of my childhood were a welcome adrenaline rush.

I realize this is a movie you're probably only supposed to watch at Christmas time, but honestly I can watch it in the middle of July and enjoy it just as much as if I I were watching it on Christmas Morning!

When I was a kid, it was about the lesson learned by the Grinch. He learned to let people in, to love and to be loved. He learned the true meaning of being a cheerful giver.

As a grown-up, it's about being able to harken back to a simpler time. About re-living those moments I so enjoyed in my youth. The Grinch is more than a holiday classic. It's a journey into one of the most enjoyable aspects of a person's past.

It's beautifully drawn... as I already said, the voices are positively mesmerizing. The message/moral/theme is very positive and clear. Tell me what's NOT to like about this movie?

    5 out of 5 stars Great flick.......2007-03-17

My 4 year old son loves the Grinch. We bought this because the tape was worn out. It is nice and clear and is the original we all remember. And even though we didnt think we were getting "Horton Hears a Who" it was included on the disc.

4 out of 5 stars The Most Beautiful Flower.......2007-01-04

It may be sacrilegious to say, but CACTUS FLOWER is a much better picture than those that Billy Wilder was making at roughly the same time. We watched this, then THE FORTUNE COOKIE in rapid succession, and this one wins by a country mile. I bring in Wilder's name because in some quarters CACTUS FLOWER has been looked on as a flimsy Billy Wilder rip-off, due to the use of Walter Matthau and also to the scenarist I A L Diamond, who worked wonders on the original Broadway play script to CACTUS FLOWER and really makes it bloom on the screen. (Only in the cramped dentist set do you feel that you're watching a play transferred to the screen. Could that set have been any smaller, sometimes you watch Ingrid Bergman try to figure out what to do with her hips as she nears a desk or filing cabinet.) Diamond squeezed this one in during the long wilderness years for Wilder, between the ragged comeback that was THE FORTUNE COOKIE, and the 1970 megaflop that became THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES. Those two shows seem absolutely dour next to the radiance of CACTUS FLOWER. Maybe Diamond felt freed up from his own impossible to live up to legacy, and he could just be really dumb.

Well, CACTUS FLOWER has a Wilder sort of mise-en-scene anyhow, as Walter Matthau plays a swinging dentist who pretends to be married in order to deceive his young girlfriend, Goldie Hawn. All the actors play this out as though it were perfectly normal for a 60 year old guy to be "dating" a 21 year old hippie girl. Last week we watched Clint Eastwood's BREEZY where the exact same situation is played out as a problem picture, nearly a tragedy, and yet here it is a sex romp. Of sorts. Basically Matthau doesn't understand that his own nurse, Stephanie Dickinson, has been devotedly in love with him for years and years. And that she, Ingrid Bergman, is the woman for him.

I wonder if there's a code of reception for audiences in which we mentally dislike the pairing of the old and the young, so we're prepared for Matthau to switch his affections from Hawn to Bergman, and to let Hawn find romance with the kooky writer next door who saves her from a suicide attempt at the beginning of the film (shades of Diamond's APARTMENT script!) . . . What's great about Columbia producing this film is all the commercial tie-ins, the product placement which must have seemed super grating and cheesy in its day, but now floats somewhere in the comfort zone. For example, Goldie works in a Village record shop, and every album on the racks seems to be -- by Columbia records! (I should say, the majority of them are, but here and again a non-Columbia LP is shown, which must have been a triumph of artistic integrity.) And my favorite scene is the disco evening, where Ingrid Bergman invents a new dance called the "Dentist." Listen to the parade of Muzaked chartbusters playing in the background while the beautiful people show it off on the dancefloor--everyone of them a Colgems tune--"I'm a Believer," "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight," really, if the Monkees had made an appearance I wouldn't have blinked an eye. It's a fantastic scene, worthy of Max Ophuls, let alone Billy Wilder.

    4 out of 5 stars Adorable 60's comedy... .......2006-04-16

This is a really sweet little film that is completely and thoroughly 60's. It stars Walter Matthau as a dentist who is dating Goldie Hawn, a young free spirit. He's told her that he's married so he won't have to marry her, but, when he decides he wants to marry her after all, he has to produce a wife. He turns to his faithful nurse, played by Ingrid Bergman (!), who has worked for him for ten years. Hawn's character feels pity for Bergman, and events escalate to the point that the dentist is using one of his patients to play the role of his "wife's" lover.

There's some really witty dialogue in here, and Goldie Hawn, in her first movie role, is irrepressibly adorable. Ingrid Bergman also gives a fabulous performance, once you get over the shock of seeing her in something that isn't Casablanca, looking almost matronly. (But, at age fifty-four, still beautiful.) Walter Matthau also gives a great performance as the sneaky but loveable dentist, and there are a couple of scenes in a dance club that are too great for words.

5 out of 5 stars If you like good ol' Classic films, you'll love this one.......2006-02-07

Classic Walter Matthau film. I enjoyed it very much because of the easy & believeable relationship between Matthau & Hawn, the suppressed attraction between Bergman & Matthau & the sweet storyline. This film was made during a time where special effects didn't fill in for weak plots; instead the story actually makes its point. Well done.

As bachelor dentist Dr. Julian Winston, Matthau tries to convince his mistress, Toni, (Goldie Hawn) that he has a wife who won't divorce him because they have children. Toni's had enough: she fires off a letter (yes, actually walks across the street in her nightgown to deposit the letter in a mailbox)to Julian, telling him she's committed suicide. Her young writer-neighbor, Igor (Rick Lenz), smells gas in the apartment hallway, breaks in & saves Toni.

When Julian receives the letter at his office, he storms off to Toni's apartment, only to find her alive & in the company of Igor. This little stunt persuades Julian to ask Toni to marry him -- he'll get a divorce no matter what. The catch is now Toni wants to meet Julian's wife, she has to get to know her so that Julian's wife won't think of Toni as a home-wrecker. Enter Ingrid Bergman as Miss Stephanie Dickinson, Dr. Winston's long-suffering, never-married dental assistant. Julian convinces Stephanie to pose as his wife for Toni.

What ensues is a calamity of coincidences & misunderstandings that cause true feelings to be revealed. Ingrid Bergman is such a joy to watch, she effortlessly steals the show.

If you want light-hearted entertainment that will leave you with a smile on your face, this film is for you.

4 out of 5 stars An Adroit Matthau, a Fresh Goldie and a Fun-Loving Bergman Provide Lift to a Frothy Farce.......2006-02-02

Aside from the discotheque scenes that epitomize the swinging sixties (especially with everyone dancing to instrumental versions of Monkees hits), I am surprised how well this lightweight farce holds up 37 years later, but indeed it does thanks to the breezy execution of its deception-based plot and the sharp interplay of the three leads. Directed by the redoubtable stage-to-screen expert Gene Saks, this 1969 comedy is about Julian Winston, a successful Manhattan dentist and confirmed bachelor, who pretends to be married in order to avoid long-term commitment with his young girlfriend of a year, Toni. In response to Toni's half-hearted suicide attempt, Julian agrees to marry her, but Toni first insists on meeting his wife to alleviate her conscience. Enter Julian's devoted nurse Stephanie to play the wife, and the inevitable complications ensue with white lies growing into major whoppers that lead to presumed couplings and de-couplings.

As Julian, a relaxed Walter Matthau dexterously plays the deceptive dentist in his typically sardonic manner, but he lets his two female co-stars walk off with the picture. In her big screen debut, a pixyish 24-year old Goldie Hawn is still retaining her giggly "Laugh-In" persona but provides unexpected savvy and depth as Toni. She and Matthau have great, unforced chemistry in their scenes together. Screen legend Ingrid Bergman, still serenely regal at 54, is obviously having a ball playing Stephanie, initially starchy and quick-witted but blossoming into a liberated spirit as the story evolves. I particularly like how casual she appears after her overnight romp. There is nice supporting work from Rick Lenz as Toni's bohemian neighbor Igor and Jack Weston as Julian's smarmy actor buddy Harvey. Billy Wilder's longtime collaborator, I.A.L. Diamond, provides the sparkling screenplay and opens up the story beyond its stage-bound origins for Saks, who is not the most cinematic of directors. Other than a couple of trailers, there are no significant extras with the DVD.

3 out of 5 stars Frothy romantic comedy.......2004-02-21

Peace and love, but not quite this much. Romantic comedy "Cactus Flower" is flirty, frothy and very amusing (not to mention it's nice to see a gal in her fifties shown as being attractive by the movie industry). It's predictable and lacking in twists, but it's entertaining by itself.

Bachelor dentist Julian Winston (Walter Matthau) met the ditzy but sweet Toni (Goldie Hawn) a year ago, but to avoid the looming threat of commitment, he claimed he was married with three kids. But Toni tries to commit suicide -- a faulty attempt botched by her attractive playwright neighbor Igor (Rick Lenz). When Julian learns of it, he decides to marry her, and pretends that he's getting a divorce from the wife he doesn't have. Small problem: Toni wants to meet her personally.

Julian tries to convince his straightlaced nurse Stephanie (Ingrid Bergman) to pretend to be his wife. At first she says no way, but then agrees (partly because she is secretly in love with him... of course). Except then Toni thinks that Stephanie is still in love with Julian, and that his kids will be traumatized by the divorce. So then Julian tries to recruit a fake boyfriend for his fake wife, to give an excuse for the fake divorce... and the web of nonexistant lovers starts to spread.

This film is a fun film, not a great film; it's froth, and pretends to be no more. In fact, I guessed the outcome of the movie (give or take a cactus and mink stole) within the first ten minutes. But getting there is half the fun. It's cute to see the little web of lies getting worse and worse, right down to the womanizing pal Harvey telling his idiot girlfriend that he's an agent for the CIA.

The trappings of "Cactus Flower" are a bit dated now -- the dancing, the store of vinyl records, the clothing, the hippie putting flowers on people's windshields. Fortunately, the script has aged pretty well if you know what "square" means. The cluelessness of Hawn's character starts to grate on the nerves (surely NO ONE can be this dim), but it has some funny dialogue.

Ingrid Bergman usually got stuck in dramatic, often melancholy roles, but here she gets to bust loose with plenty of acid-tongued barbs, the "dentist" dance, not to mention a funny, sexy dance with Igor and a mink stole. Matthau does an excellent job as the increasingly uptight, habitual liar Julian, whom we like despite his jerkishness. Hawn is merely okay; she spends a little too much time biting her lip and looking fawnish, and Lenz is extremely funny, charming and quite underrated.

The witty repartee and amusingly predictable plotline make this a fun watch, if you're in the mood for something light and bizarrely romantic. Cute and entertaining.

Donald Duck's nephews learn why holidays come once a year, Goofy and son discover the spirit of Santa, and Mickey and Minnie reenact a classic tale of giving in this all-new holiday offering. Kelsey Grammer (TV's Frasier) narrates as Donald hosts Christmas at his house, complete with an egg and pancake breakfast, a sled for each duckling in the closet, and Daisy under the mistletoe. But the celebration gets old fast when the boys' wish for Christmas every day comes true.
