4 out of 5 stars Energetic and Engaging.......2007-06-15

There isn't a lot of quality material out there to help people learn authentic West African dance. This DVD really fills the void. It has lively, colorful visuals, and the dances are presented clearly with a wonderful drumming ensemble. I like how the presentation alternates between instruction and performance examples. As a classroom music teacher, I hoped my students would enjoy working with the DVD. In fact, they loved it, and it really brought this exciting art form to them in a fun and educational way!

5 out of 5 stars I bought for my friend too..........2007-06-15

I orderred this DVD from a smaller website, so I'm glad its on Amazon now becasue I've had to track it down and buy it for two of my other friends from my African dance group! This video has been an asset for learning and practicing dances between classes that I take from my live teacher. Any student of world or African dancewill benefit from this DV, I hope there will be a sequel soon!

5 out of 5 stars Informative Resource.......2007-02-08

This video was very helpful to me -- it offers a basic foundation of what moves are involved in popular Ghanaian dances. I recommend this video to anyone who practices African dance.

4 out of 5 stars Most Interesting and Educational!.......2006-12-27

After viewing this DVD, I found it very informative and educational. I personally enjoy learning about people's cultures and lifestyles. So learning cultural Ghanian dances, even though different, there was something fun and appealing about doing the dances as I watched. The music was upbeat and the dance moves were rhythmic and soulful. I suggest anyone who's open-minded, loves change and loves to dance.....to check this out!

This video is the first of its kind, made in Ghana, West Africa, featuring drum and dance demonstrations performed by The Ghana Dance Ensemble. This prestigious, National troupe shows you all the drum parts for four rhythms, including Kinka, Agbadza, and Slow and Fast Agbekor. Each drum part is demonstrated, followed by the ensemble performing the rhythm, and finally, the group performs the rhythm again, with the dancers demonstrating the dance moves. Each master drum part is also shown in its entirety, which if you play Atsimevu, is a gold mine!

Made for drummers and dancers alike, this video is a must have for students of Ghanaian drum and dance and will be a perfect addition to your collection of audio/visual materials. This video was filmed at the University of Ghana in 2002 by Vijay Rakhra as a Cultural Preservation project, co-produced by the University of Ghana, Institute of African Studies.

        Product Description

Dagomba Beats was made for anyone interested in studying the Lunna and Gungon instruments from the Northern Region of Ghana. Inusha Hamidu Jawula, a master drummer and dancer from Tamale, breaks down the parts on Gungon for two very important rhythms, Bamaaya, and Damba Takai. Inusah also plays both, the Lunna (Talking Drum) and Gungon (Bass Drum) for Damba Takai, a well known choregraphed version of three rhythms combined. While this rhythm is fun and more basic to play, Inusah explains it is not part of the real tradition of how they play in his home town. Inusah demonstrates, so his students can see, how the two rhythms differ and this is most helpful to drummers who are serious about learning the culture and history, as well as, the music. Filmed on location at the University of Ghana, this video is an absolute must for the talking drum enthusiest and anyone on their way to Ghana to study the music first hand.
