I read the book Left to Tell (which was tremendous), and ordered this video right away when I saw that it was available. It is excellent also, both as a companion piece to the book or on its own. Immaculee's story is emotional and wrenching as it portrays an unbelievable tragedy. Everyone should see it so they'd feel compelled to help others who are now suffering and dying in Darfur.

Immaculee's CD.......2007-01-04

This CD was interesting and enhances her book "Left to Tell" by actually visiting Rwanda, her homeland. However, I give it a low grade only because I was looking for more information on the spiritual elements of her heart-wrenching story. So by that measure, my expectations were not met. I can only say that the whole of her story -- the factual and spiritual -- as told in her book will live with me forever. Very powerful.

This was a fabulous documentary...very moving. It realistically depicted the atrocities and horrors yet was tastefully done. It personalized a monumental disaster and put a face and individual story to the genocide. This one woman's remembrance becomes a tribute to her strength and endurance and a lesson in humanity as she returns to her country so many years later. You feel as if she is in the room telling the story directly to you...the method of film-making adds to the depth of her poise and emotion. Highly recommended!!

This animated feature-length life of Jesus boasts a stellar pedigree. Originally a BBC: Wales production, it showcases the voices of some of Britain's finest actors in any medium: Ralph Fiennes as a brooding and humble Jesus, Miranda Richardson as Mary Magdalene, Richard E. Grant as John the Baptist, and David Thewlis as Judas. The lovely, flute-heavy score is by Oscar winner Anne Dudley (The Full Monty). And clearly a lot of expense has gone into the Claymation-like animation. But while it's hard to find fault with the rendering of this familiar story--it's respectful and definitely done, you might say, by the Book--it would have been nice if there had been a tad more joy, if it walked a bit lighter in its sandals. As it is, all the characters seem consistently subdued, whether they're expressing angst, rage, terror, or bliss--none of which is helped by the figures' blank-eyed stares (if animators are becoming ever more sophisticated, why can't they get rid of those creepy Charlie McCarthy gazes once and for all?). Still, the weight of having such formidable actors play these familiar roles lends the production a certain credibility, and parents looking for good religious videos that won't insult their kids' intelligence will be thrilled. --Anne Hurley

Perfect Presentation of the Gospel for Young Children.......2007-05-18

I watched this with my 4-yr old daughter and was thrilled by the way it presents the gospel, and she loved it too. It opens up a new way to discuss the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. The script and characters are impacting to adults too...it is definitely for the entire family.

The clay animation is well done and not amateur at all. I could not have been more pleased with this dvd.

Good movie........2007-05-13

This has been a wonderful addition to our Sunday morning Bible time. My son is 11 and has autism, my daughter is 7 (does not have autism). They both enjoy this dvd. It helps them understand more of the bible on their terms. They don't even realize that they are "learning" anything, except that we talk about the movie when it's done. They really like the characters. We find it perfect for the ages of our children.

I can watch this movie over and over and not get tired of it. It tells the beautiful story of Jesus and his last days here. I couldn't believe they showed this one on television! Wonderful movie and worth buying!

More Than the Perfect Kids' Film.......2007-05-01

I watched this to find out if it would be a good film for kids to see about the life of Christ. (My favorite was and still is the 1977 mini-series, JESUS OF NAZARETH--still a powerhouse of A-list acting and a triumph of storytelling).

THE MIRACLE MAKER - THE STORY OF JESUS is not just terrific for kids to watch as an introduction to the Gospel, but it's also a visually compelling version of the greatest story ever told for any age. I only wished that the filmmakers had the time and money to commit every scene to claymation (some parables and flashbacks are shown as cell animation).

The familiar voices such as Ralph Fiennes (as Jesus), Julie Christie and David Thewlis definitely lifts this presentation above kids' fare, that's for sure.

Amazon says this DVD is currently unavailable. I hope that's a temporary status since this would make a great holiday gift for any kid. Or grown up.

Tommy (Darius McCrary of "Family Matters") is desperate to find a job, but no one wants to hire an ex-con. With no family & the only opportunity facing him being that of a drug runner, life doesn't look too promising. Then he meets Memaw (Irma P. Hall), a kind, elderly woman who hears Tommy's beautiful singing voice in the grocery store. What follows is a pleasant tale of how showing God's love can change even the hardest of hearts and that everyone needs a second chance. Also features Tamera Mowry (from "Sister, Sister") as Lily.

My husband & I have been looking for good Christian movies to show our youth group, & this definitely falls into that category. The script is well-written & realistic, the acting is excellent (who knew Darius McCrary could sing???), & the story never loses sight of it's goal...love changes people.

This movie will leave a smile on your face & your heart singing. If you're looking for a Christian movie without the B-acting & poor action scenes, this one fits the bill. No heavy end-times theme or confusing plot twists, this movie banks on the simple but life-changing truth of God's love.

This video is a scientific and spiritual look at why we can be optomistic about our future. It is based on the book of the same title, which was more of a call to action. The visual aspects make Goodall's words come to life. It is not so easy to discount her conclusions when you see for yourself the reactions of chimpanzees to the wonder of a waterfall or the devestating destruction of their habitat. I use this video to inspire and motivate my university students who are interested in environmental causes, as it demonstrates what one motivated person can do to raise the consciousness of people and what aware people can do when they organize and act.

He was ordained in 1919 and went on to become one of the best known and greatly loved priests in modern times.

He wrote 96 books and hundreds of articles and columns. He broadcast numerous radio and television programs. People of all faiths watched him on television because he spoke to everyone. They always waited with joy for his goodbye, his blessing - "God Love You." In October of 1979, Pope John Paul II said to Bishop Sheen, "You have written and spoken well of the Lord Jesus. You are a loyal son of the Church." Bishop Sheen died on December 9 of that same year.

In this documentary director David Peterson takes us to World Mission for Christ Church International, a tiny black Pentecostal storefront church a few blocks from the nation's capitol. I think I counted four pews in the sanctuary. But the thirty or so parishioners have followed the advice of a sign on the wall: "keep the fire burning." They take up offerings for each other to fix a car, and pass out free food and clothing to the neighborhood. The film follows the stories of three people in particular. Darlene is a single mother raising eight kids and studying at night to become a nursing assistant. David works in the church's homeless shelter and wants to buy a house. Ceodtis, "Big C," is a street singer who wants to cut his first gospel CD with his ten-year old son, and who wants to find out who murdered his son. You'll have to watch the film to learn their fates. The dignity, resilience and joy of these urban saints reminded me of Hebrews 11:38, "people of whom the world is not worthy." Director Peterson never prompts his subjects, and there is no narrative voice over; he simply lets these people tell their own stories in their own words. It is a story worth seeing.

Unbelievable.......2007-01-16

I'll echo exactly what the previous 2 reviewers wrote, this film is amazing, unbelievable, almost beyond words. Here is a church, probably minutes away from our White House and our Congress (these who are supposed to be taking care of their neighborhood, which would be the whole, United States.) Anyway,

The church is filled with people who support each other, and improve their neighborhood with knowledge, job training, peaceful demonstrations, free healthcare, and much more. The church seems to me, to be exactly what a church is meant to be.

Fantastic movie about faith in real life!.......2006-01-26

I saw this film at Sundance two years ago and desperately wanted a copy of it right away. I am delighted to have found it now on Amazon. It is not only a riveting portrait of faith lived out in the context of very difficult situations, it is also an important corrective to the treacly, mass-marketed, individualistic piety that dominates much of what is labeled "Christian" nowadays. I wept through much of it, but they were good tears -- tears of joy.

absolutely lifechanging .......2005-04-01

I am a somewhat cynical person; however, after seeing this film I was absolutely blown away. It affirms what I have known for years, but some had forgotten, that the best way to serve God is to serve your fellow man. Watching the devotion to others and to God that the people in this film exhibit under very trying circumstances has caused me to recommit myself to the cause. I highly recommend this film to those who, like myself, heartily dislike the standard vanilla "Christian" fare usually presented in the mainstream, but still would like to be able to view inspirational type films that relate this strongly to the real world. The joy that these people exhibit in worship and in daily life, set against the backdrop of addicts, gangs, and urban decay, makes me ashamed that I've not been more thankfull for where I am, and how little I've given back. If I could, i would give it 10 stars....

She has the strength to dream, but not the strength to live........2005-06-12

This just might be the best disc in the whole series Angelic Layer. There are four episodes on the disc, and both are two-parters. The first two involve Misaki's fight against Kaede and Blanche, while the last two are about Sai and Shirahime. This has been a long time in coming.

For pretty much the whole series now, we've been wondering just how strong Sai and Kaede are. They are always on the sidelines watching the matches, and they always seem to know who is going to win. They are masters of the game. So naturally the fights between them and Misaki with her Hikaru do not disappoint.

In the first episode we have our attention split between Misaki's desire to reunite with her mother and the fight that's about to take place with Kaede. Misaki is so consumed with worry about possibly meeting her mother that she fails to notice the strange tactics Kaede is using until it is too late. The entire fight is awesome, perfectly paced. And the episode ends with a cliffhanger (and things looking BAD for Misaki and Hikaru).

The second episode focuses mostly on the amazing story of how Angelic Layer came into existance. It's a wonderful story, and it shows us why Misaki's mother is the grand master, as well as why a certain mad-scientist in a white lab coat is so devoted to her. Of course the ice on the cake in this episode is the awesome conclusion to the fight between Misaki and Kaede, which ends in a new closing theme for the series!

The third episode is awesome. It hints at the Sai's past, and shows us an unbelievable battle between Shirahime and Hotoko's angel. With the tiny child grandmaster and the stoic Sai going head to head in a winner-take all duel, the result is truly one of the great moments of the series. Anyone who has ever played a fighting game against a true grand master will recall fights that work out exactly the way this one does. Awesome. And the conclusion of the episode is quite emotional as well.

The final episode is one of the best, if not THE best in the entire series (in my opinion). Misaki takes on Sai in a match that exploits Hikaru's weak point, and Misaki is forced to overcome it in order to come to terms with Shirahime's perfect form and flawless strategy (to say nothing of crushing attacks). The real reason why I love this episode though, is that we finally get to learn about Sai's past in depth and why she is the way she is. When you see how much she loves her little sister, and must helplessly watch as she slowly dies despite her enormous strength of mind, it breaks your heart. You can truly understand why Sai fights the way she does. She is not fighting for herself. She is fighting for her dead sister, and can seemingly never get over the pain of her loss. Truly an amazing episode. And again, the fight is good too.

If you have been following Angelic Layer this far you definitely need to watch this disc. These are some of the best episodes in the series (and arguably in anime history). Definitely not to be missed.

I've seen this DVD lots of times, and, I must say it: DUDE, IT IS AWESOME!!! The commentary is really funny (They're fighting on Mars!), and I can now sing along to the theme songs, even though it's in Japanese.

It's the continuing adventures of Misaki Suzuhara and her Angel, Hikaru. She'll be fighting against Kaede and her Angel, Blanche. The episodes offer information on Kaede and Blanche, Sai and Shirahime, and Misaki's mom, Shuko.

It follows the original manga very closely. These episodes closely follow the third book, minus the first chapter. Also, the art is followed so closely, it almost looked like they colored in the manga.

Very good anime, I rated it five stars.

This is literally a 'cool' DVD!.......2004-04-10

Angelic Layer has to be one of the greatest Animes yet! In this DVD, Misaki(Actually, it's Hikaru) has to fight against Kaede and Blanch. It's a tough match, that's probably why it took two episodes to finish it!
The second episode is the ending of the match, but mostly about how Misaki's mother left her in Kindergarten and how Shuko met Icchan. It's rather interesting really...
And the last episode is when Misaki and Hikaru go up against Sai and Shirahime. Misaki's weakness is... Wait! I shouldn't say! You need to watch the DVD for that! ^__~
I highly recommend this DVD to any Angelic Layer Fan! It's way cool!
