Old-World Dutch.......2007-01-17

Are you of Dutch origin and interested in Dutch culture and customs? Then this movie is for you. This movie has all the trappings of 19th century old-world Dutch life, complete with ice-skating, outdoor markets and a visit from Saint Nicholas.
I did not like the character of the Baroness Eleanor Parker played in "The Sound of Music," but in this film, she is a sensitive and caring mother to her children and very attentive wife to the ailing father. Unless her singing roles are being dubbed by a voice-over, if that's her singing, then I would wonder why she never pursued a singing career. I never heard of her in anything else but "The Sound of Music" so far.
Especially amusing is the table-manner song performed by the inn keeper and the boys.
Again, for anyone interested in Dutch culture, this film is for you.

Fun in the Semi-Arctic!.......2005-09-11

This is a fun movie, with lots of dancing and colorful costumes. The singing is so-so, as are the songs. Possibly they were more lively when the movie first came out.

The young people are multi-talented, and the older crew (Richard Basehart and Eleanor Parker) are first-rate. A great film for all ages, even the children! It's easy to get swept away with the snow, the ice-racing and all the beautiful dancing. A heartfelt story with a happy ending.

Great Family Christmas Movie/Musical!!.......2004-04-16

The movie Hans Brinker is a great Christmas movie/musical set in the 19th century Holland about a family and the trials and tribulations they encounter.It's a must see!!

This is a wonderful movie for those looking for something to remind them that good things can happen to people who keep on trying. It is filled with hope, moral standings and what perserverance can do.

I first heard this version on a Disneyland LP and I loved it from that day on. Then, I finally saw this on the Disney Channel and loved the score, story, the scenery and the characters. True, this is adapted from the novel but with Disney at the helm, it's a true classic.

I notice a few reviewers think that younger people would be bored by this movie. I just watched it with my eleven year old and he liked a lot. He said at first that it looked dull but then sat down and got sucked into it, especially the racing scenes. The acting is good and the story moves along.
I only give it four stars though, because it is only about 50% like the book that I enjoyed so much as a child. The book was really good--I don't know why they didn't stick to it.

Does not follow the original book........2005-11-03

While the production standards are very high (like all Disney films of that era), this version of Hans Brinker does not follow the original book very closely which is unfortunate since the original story is very well written and did not need to be changed. Having seen both movies, I recommend the musical version because it more closely follows the book, the music is nice, and the locations are great.
