There's some thrilling music happening on Hymns for Peace: Live at Montreux 2004. That's not exactly a bulletin, considering that Carlos Santana and his New Santana Band, a crack outfit to begin with, are joined by several of the greatest jazz musicians of their generation, including saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianists Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, and guitarist John McLaughlin--a recipe for brilliance that's fulfilled throughout the two-disc, three-hour show. If there's a mild surprise here, it's that the titular "hymns"--written by John Lennon, Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye, Bob Dylan, and Stevie Wonder, and described by Santana as "spiritual songs that bring healing and illumination to all of humanity"--do not provide the show's most compelling moments. There's no doubt that "Just Like a Woman," "Imagine," "Redemption Song," "What's Going On," "Exodus," "Get Up, Stand Up," and others are timeless classics; but while the combination of these compositions and the people playing and singing them is certainly intriguing, the actual performances are straightforward and not especially scintillating (vocalists include Angelique Kidjo, Barbara Morrison, Patti Austin, and Santana singer Andy Vargas; Steve Winwood shows up for a version of Timmy Thomas' "Why Can't We Live Together"). Far more exciting are extended versions of Mongo Santamaria's "Afro Blue," Pharoah Sanders' "Light at the Edge of the World," Miles Davis and Joe Zawinul's "In a Silent Way," and John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" (one of several tunes featuring the sax legend's son, Ravi). McLaughlin never quite catches fire, but Hancock, Shorter, and Corea are astonishing, turning in solos that are marvelously unpredictable and adventurous models of chops and invention. It's all beautifully shot and recorded, making Hymns for Peace a must-have for fans of these extraordinary musicians, Santana included. --Sam Graham

1 out of 5 stars Clip bad advertrising for the DVD.......2007-07-04

OK, I will admit it - have not watched the entire video, so it is perhaps unfair to comment, but I will base my opinion on the clip they have provided here. It is so awful, that I would not want risk to waste my hard-earned money to buy the DVD. The singer is absolutely and utterly terrible, and the playing totally flat and boring, without any spark of creativity or inspiration. Just rolling the same chords over and over, even Shorter's solo is devoid of that improvisational fire that he is so admired for. I'll take Bob Marley's version any time over this mush. Yuck!

2 out of 5 stars WARNING ! Jazzer's keep dough in pockets........2007-06-23

This is a pop extravaganza. The like of which Carlos is only recently known for. (Remember George Benson?) The jazz musicians on the title play for very very little time in any kind of jazz/improv format. The vast majority of the DVD is singers singing non-jazz songs which are backed up by some of the Jazz musicians. There is one jam towards the beginning where they all get about 8 bars. Then later John and Carlos play "Enter the house of the lord" ALL and I said "ALL" of the rest (even jazz titles) are pop type songs. On the other hand if you havn't had enough of "The Banana Boat Song" then this DVD is for you. As for me. My money is gone.

But do get the Santana and Shorter DVD. That is great. That cooks.

5 out of 5 stars A real great concert.......2007-06-09

I must say that to watch all this great talent on the same stage is a treat. The likes of Chick Corea,Wayne Shorter,Herbie Hancock along with all the singers is a concert not to be missed.

4 out of 5 stars Santana: Hymns For Peace - Live at Montreux 2004.......2007-06-02

People who liked the collaboration between JohnMcLaughlin and Carlos Santana-e.g. "Love, Devotion, Surrender"
will have a chance to see both of the reunited many years later - and even performing compositions from that album. "Let Us Go Into The House Of The Lord" and "A Love Supreme" really stand out! The addition of Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock from the "electric" Miles Davis era is an extra treat!

5 out of 5 stars truly amazing concert.......2007-05-14

It was great to see all these musicians and vocalists together on one stage. The concert was worth the price of the dvd.

Now, if Carlos can just get his former members of Santana and play those great instrumental hits from his earlier albums..........that would be a Santana fan's dream.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular!.......2007-06-21

This is what happens when you get a collection of some of the world's best jazz musicians, very talented vocalists, and Carlos Santana on one stage together...just a spectacular performance!

Santana and his band are worth the price of admission alone but add Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin(Santana's mentor back in the 70's), Wayne Shorter, Ravi Coltrane plus Stevie Winwood from Traffic fame, and a collection of wonderful female vocalists and you have one of the very best concert DVD's in a long time. The people attending this concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival saw a history making performance.

Add to this, the camera work was excellent and the sound spot-on. The selections of songs were very eclectic, with pices ranging from, John Lennon, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Harry Bellafonte, and of course Santana. Often, when you get too many front-line musicians on the stage together, it can sound like a train wreck but that never happens here. There seems to be a real sense of symbiosis, all the pieces fall together perfectly.

If you want to see Santana perform his more popular songs get, "Supernatural Live" or the "Santana Live By Request" DVD's.

However, if you want to see "real performers" performing at the highest level, playing songs that inspire them, while having a great time, get this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Santana Hymns.......2007-06-01

I have been waiting for this album since I read about Carlo's plans to release it shortly after "Supernatural" had hit it big.It has been years and worth every second of the wait.Santana brings his core new band and adds stellar players to the lineup recording songs that are meant to inspire the people of the world to change their reality to one of compassion for the one world.Carlo's shows he can outplay anyone, anytime, anywhere but he is so humble and concerned for the cause he complaments all of the other players.Imagine Carlos,Mahavishnu,Shorter,Coltrane,Corea,Hancock,Winwood and a host of other luminaries playing songs of love completly in the zone.Carlos and Herbie Hancock are particularly outstanding.I consider this double DVD set the finest music video that has yet been created.Mandatory purchase for everybody in the world.

For those who wonder what Weather Report, arguably the premier jazz-fusion band of the '70s and '80s, might have sounded like with a guitar player, Carlos Santana & Wayne Shorter - Live at Montreux is a good reference point. The verdict: if Shorter's involved, it's going to be good. The saxophonist-composer and his Weather Report co-founder, keyboardist Joe Zawinul, had disbanded the group by mutual consent about two years before Shorter joined forces with guitarist Santana on a 1988 tour that included this gig at Switzerland's Montreux Jazz Festival. And while Santana was the bigger name, the music presented in this two-hour concert is actually closer to the Weather Report sound--i.e., a rich blend of electric jazz and world music influences performed by a versatile group of virtuoso players. In fact, three of them had been Weather Report members at various times: bassist Alphonso Johnson, the amazing drummer Leon "Ndugu" Chancler, and Chester Thompson, who plays keyboards here but had manned the drum seat while with Shorter, Zawinul, and company. Along with keyboardist Patrice Rushen and percussionists Armando Peraza (congas) and Jose Chepito Areas (timbales), both Santana stalwarts, they assay material familiar to both Shorter fans ("Elegant People" from Weather Report's Black Market, "Sanctuary" from Bitches Brew, one of the many Miles Davis albums on which Shorter played) and Santana lovers ("Incident at Neshabur," "Blues for Salvador," "Europa"). Shorter is brilliant throughout; his solos on both tenor and soprano sax are fiery and expressive, and his communication with the others is a wondrous thing to behold. Santana, on the other hand, often sounds out of his element, if not out of his league; although he has an instantly recognizable sound and plays with great passion, he's primarily a rock guitarist with a limited blues-based style that restricts his ability to interact with skilled improvisers like Shorter and Rushen and take part in the kind of dynamic ebb and flow that characterizes great jazz performances. In the end, this is a good, sometimes inspiring show. But one wonders what might have happened if Shorter had joined forces with, say, John McLaughlin instead. --Sam Graham

Description

It began almost as a lark when Carlos Santana encountered his longtime friend and hero Wayne Shorter on the concert trail in Atlanta, GA, in 1987. Carlos said, "Let's start a rumor that we're putting a band together." Wayne's eyes got bigger and brighter as he smiled and then responded: "Yeah, Carlos, let's start a rumor." A few months later the Carlos Santana/Wayne Shorter Band performed its debut concert at The Fillmore in San Francisco, the beginning of a 26-concert tour throughout the U.S. and Europe. The performance of this magnificent band was recorded at Montreux, Switzerland, on July 14, 1988, and includes interviews with Carlos Santana, Wayne Shorter and festival creator Claude Nobs. SONGS: Spiritual - Peraza - Shhh - Incident at Neshabur - Elegant People - Goodness & Mercy - Sanctuary - For Those Who Chant - Blues for Salvador - FIreball 2000 - Ballroom in the Sky - Once It's Gotcha - Mandela - Deeper, Dig Deeper - Europa Musicians: Carlos Santana - guitar / Wayne Shorter - saxophone / Chester Thompson - keyboards / Patrice Rushen - keyboards / Alphonso Johnson - bass / Armando Peraza - congas / Jose Chepito Areas - timbales / Leon "Ndugu" Chancler - drums

3 out of 5 stars Great Concert, Terrible Cinematography.......2007-04-24

For those of us who enjoy jazz rock music, the pairing of Carlos Santana and Wayne Shorter is a match made in heaven. For anyone who is even vaguely familiar with these two artists, then it should be quite obvious that a live concert featuring them would be great and this concert certainly is.

My criticism is twofold: First, the menu options on the DVD are limited at best. The only selections are: Play All, Interviews, Concert, and Audio Set Up. This DVD was released way after the practice of listing the song selections was the norm. Second, the director falls into the all too common pattern of keeping the shots brief. Most shots do not last longer than four seconds. Every time the shot changes, you have to reorient yourself. This is terrible when you're trying to watch an artist develope a solo. Also, I wish I knew what posses the overuse of the close up. I can almost see its use in movies but for concerts? Please! I really wish directors would realize that when they zoom in that close, they take away the audience's choice. When we attend a live concert, we sit in our seats and look at whatever we want. So, please, please, get the camera out of the performer's freakin' nose and let US decide what we want to look at.

I know that this doesn't bother most people. If you're one of them, then by all means, enjoy this DVD. However, if you feel as I do, you may only want to listen rather than watch.

5 out of 5 stars A few facts..........2007-04-23

It the editorial review above, they state that Chester Thompson plays keys here and played drums with Weather Report. This is incorrect.

The Chester Thompson that played drums with Weater Report also played drums with Genesis.

This Chester Thompson only plays keyboards and did a stint with Tower of Power before joining Santana, I believe he's been well known on the San Francisco scene for decades.

Also, if you like this, try to dig up a copy of Santana's "The Swing of Delight" from around this period...it features Wayne, Herbie Hancock and I believe Johnson is on it too (or perhaps Jaco).

4 out of 5 stars A rare treat.......2007-04-07

What a combination. This is a marvellous treat for both rock and jazz fans with two giants both with their very distinctive sound which melts into a very wonderful treat.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-04-06

5 out of 5 stars ¡Haga lo!.......2007-05-24

This DVD is fast-paced. The instructors are all business, but the dancing itself still makes the DVD very fun. There is plenty of content, and the menus are easy to use. I'll be very pleased with myself if I can master everything in this beginning DVD. You may be very impressed with all you can learn too, especially if you are like me and haven't really been exposed to salsa before. Gigi and Pedro demonstrate advanced salsa at the end of the DVD; their demo is just flat-out crazy.

5 out of 5 stars So clear and easy, even my boyfriend can dance now.......2007-02-17

I've been dancing my entire life and salsa for the past six years. Then I got a boyfriend last year and he felt kinda left out when we went to salsa clubs, cause he never did salsa in his life. Now to be honest I'm not much of a teacher, and he doesn't have the money for actual classes, so we had a problem. Then my teacher mentioned something about some dirty guide to salsa, I gotta admit at first I was a little sceptical, but we bought it anyway. And it's fantastic, it's so easy and so much fun and Gigi is so awesome too. Except that my boyfriends wants to meet her now, no way that's happening, he's my dance partner now!

5 out of 5 stars Salsa is awesome!.......2007-02-10

I actually got this dvd from a friend of mine for my birthday. She thought it would be a fun joke. So when I got it at my party we all laughed and said we would all be amzing salsa dancers by the end of the night. A couple of hours later we went through the entire dvd and all of us could do all the steps Gigi taught us that night, from Abajo to El Dos. And the fact that we could still follow the instructions after the 2 bottles of tequilla the eight of us finished that night, proves to me that this is the best Salsa dvd you can find on this planet.

Like the hit album that inspires its name, Supernatural Live brings journeyman guitarist Carlos Santana back into the mainstream by surrounding him with younger superstars eager to bask in his formidable musical presence. Resuscitating stardom through sheer proximity can translate to forced pairings or superfluous music making, but credit Santana himself with minimizing such missteps. A fusion artist before the term was coined, the erstwhile Mexican street musician long ago extended his technical reach and broadened his stylistic palette by hungrily assimilating different styles of music. Accordingly, he shifts gears easily, whether soloing behind Dave Matthews, trading lines with legendary saxophonist Wayne Shorter, or spicing up a hip-hop excursion with Lauryn Hill.

Santana justifiably taps into the late '90s' breakout for Latin pop, hardly surprising in light of his early identification with Latin-rock via his 1968 recording debut. His early reworking of Tito Puente's classic "Oye Como Va" thus pops up as the set closer, while the concert kicks off with a frenetic, horn-powered "(Da Le) Yaleo," given added spectacle by a swaying corps of lissome female dancers in feathered headgear. Elsewhere, the guitarist hosts a procession of the stars that added their marquee value to the Supernatural album, including Rob Thomas (the massive hit, "Smooth," here performed as a medley with "Dame Tu Amor") and Everlast. But a duet with label colleague Sarah McLachlan on "Angel" yields the concert's only anticlimax--on a ballad built from spare piano and a poignant lyric, Santana's innate taste leaves him little to contribute beyond a delicate tracery of classical guitar.

Production values are excellent, with crisp camera work and sound mixing. A special remote camera, mounted on the neck of Santana's guitar, presents his intricate fretwork in nifty close-ups that are wisely held to just a few songs. --Sam Sutherland

This used to be a "filler" on the film entertainmnet system on Qantas international flights: watched it so many times and it just seemed to get better and better!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best........2007-05-14

Santana has been one of my all time favorite concerts- they know how to put on a show and celebrate life and music. (Just like his live concerts - it unbelievable- the sound quality and perfection that Carlos and his band are able to achieve-Live). I expected all the great old songs and was surprised to hear some new and different and great guest collaborations. This is one that I watched again right away. I consider this a piece of musical history- so many great musicians in one place. My husband had not seen Santana before and was an immediate fan by the 2nd song. (and not just because of the showgirls)

3 out of 5 stars OK make that 3 1/2 ... It's CARLOS...!.......2006-06-27

Carlos Santana isn't simply a musician. He's become more of a legend in the nearly 4 decades since he stepped onstage at Woodstock wearing a Jesus Christ "crown of thorns" tee shirt and played the living "you know what" out of that red Gibson SG.

Since then, Carlos has become the goodwill ambassador for alot of ideals and spirituality that, whether yer on his trip or not, represent all that is good, kind, generous and (dare I say it without making you hurl ) LOVING in the world today. So let's put everything into a slightly different perspective than a simple concert review. A Santana concert is a celebration of brotherhood and fraternity for people around the world.... Something that we could use alot more of these days. This concert certainly delivers a generous portion of just that.

Rarely is someone going to like all of the diverse guest performers in this concert. In fact, being an old geezer and retired pro musician myself, they aren't really my thing either.... So bloody what? Besides, Carlos and the producers of this concert were smart enough to give the younger crowd all these new stars and die hard old Santana fans plenty of the old numbers too. Pretty smart marketing, eh?

As always, the Santana Band delivers tight music, great arrangements,(for rock-n-roll anyway) killer percussion work and Carlos can still play the doggy dew out of a guitar.... Just like he always has. (.......and while I'm at it, I'd just like to remind all the music snobs who say "Old Carlos has lost his chops", let's see how well you still play guitar in your mid sixties)... So there.... ya cocky little dilettantes.

I haven't bothered to check out the price at which Amazon's dealers are selling this DVD. But hell, I'd pay ten bucks just to see that drop dead gorgeous PRS guitar that Carlos plays with the orange flame maple top. It's so brilliantly figured it looks like it's about catch fire.... just beautiful.

All in all this DVD is worth having. Perhaps for the Santana connoisseur this concert pales in comparison to Sacred Fire in Mexico.... But what the hell........ It's Carlos fricken Santana...!!

How bad could it possibly be....?

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-02-19

I did listen this cd/dvd before and to a Santana fan this is a must

5 out of 5 stars Legendary.......2006-01-20

I love the way Carlos brings the new and old together on this DVD with his many diversified guests. As a 'for fun' conga player I go nuts when I hear the timbales, congas, bongos and all of that fabulous latin percussion that Carlos has thankfully brought to the mainstream.

When the DVD opens you get the flamingo dancers with brightly colored head dresses and you know it's only gonna get better from there. Don't want to say too much, but trust me, you'll love it. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Exellent performance, This is a collection DVD.......2006-04-08

This DVD is a must have. The quality of the video is barely acceptable, the soundtrack is good. The music selection is excellent although I missed "El Temblor".

Soda Estereo is my favorite Spanish rock band. The connection between the band and the concert fans is just amazing. We've lost a great band.

If you like rock this is a DVD that will make you appreciate how wonderful Spanish rock musicians they are.

I definitely recommend this DVD.

3 out of 5 stars Excelente concierto, mas no un excelente DVD! (Excellent Concert, but not an excellent DVD).......2006-04-02

Soda Stereo was with no doubt the greatest rock band in Latin America from the mid eighties to the mid nineties. From album to album they evolved enriching their musical language and therefore innovating the forms of "rock en español", without recurring to fusion of rock with latin folklore, which in itself is not a bad thing, it can be interesting, but Soda Stereo proved that a Latin Rock Band could make the best of rock music in Spanish, and could be favorably compared to their anglosaxon peers. For those of us who lamented their breakup, and are haunted by nostalgia, this DVD of their final concert in Buenos Aires functions as a partial cure, there we have Soda Stereo, with their powerful presence, portrayed in peak form musically..., but unfortunetly, the DVD production does not make justice to their musical mastery. A more cinematic hand was missing there! For all of us who love the music of Soda Stereo that failure will not matter much in the end, but surely it will for those who are not acquainted with their music and have their first approach to Soda throug this DVD. Because it is not simply that at times music and image do not match, it is simply that there is not a good job at the camera level. Visually the concert ends up turning tedious, and that is sad, because the cinematic language is not put to good use here. Song after song the time passes, and the camera either moves lousily or does not move at all; on the other hand, there was no use of video segments in some of the songs for which that might have worked, the viewer does not have interesting views of the public out there, and details that could have been given prominence in the stage are simply missed, for example, the performance of the musicians that accompanied the band. They just were shown as part of the backdrop. Compare this DVD with the excellent one that presents Brazilian singer songwriter Caetono Veloso, "Hombre de Fina Estampa", and you will understand what I mean. It is a shame that even the band leader, Cerati, or the bassist, Bosio, who had both such an impressive performance in the stage were not given a right treatment by the camera.
Anyway, if you love Soda Stereo, or even if you want to have an approach as a possible fan of the band, buy the dvd, but concentrate mostly in the music, because in spite of my reservations, there is a bit of value added to the DVD over the two audio cds of the final concert that are well known to the fans.

5 out of 5 stars El Ultimo Concierto <3 Soda Stereo.......2006-03-16

This dvd is for any true Soda Stereo fan, or better yet, for any music fan. For those of you that dont know Soda Stereo was one of the greatest bands in latin rock history who's influence is still felt in music today. The dvd is a great buy. It was filmed in 1997 and the picture and sound quality is excellent. From beginning to end the show is just perfect. Quick highlights: Gustavo Cerati's classic "Soda Stereo, Buenos Aires Argentina" Intro!, Te Para Tres Acoustic.....actually, the entire dvd is an unforgettable highlight, but dont take my word for it, see for yourself.
p.s.: Amazon is quick! I had been looking for the dvd for a long time and was anxious to get it. I had it in less than 2 days after having ordered it!

As a Disney oddity, they don't get much odder than Three Caballeros. Donald Duck receives a birthday package from South America, and the film proceeds to unravel like some peyote-induced hallucination. It starts out reminiscent of other Disney films, where shorts are cobbled together, such as "Make Mine Music" or "Fun and Fancy Free." The film has vignettes such as "The Cold-Blooded Penguin" and "The Flying Guachito." After them it careens straight into part-travelogue, part-stream-of-consciousness animation. Not helping out much are Donald's "friends," Joe Carioca (a parrot) and Panchito (a rooster). They spend most of the rest of the film watching Donald chase skirt. That's right, Donald Duck is a wolf in this movie, and he chases every live-action señorita who bustles across the screen. Although some will say otherwise, Caballeros is for die-hard Disney, Donald, or psychedelia fans only. --Keith Simanton

Description

The ever-popular and excitable Donald Duck stars in one of his greatest adventures -- a dazzling blend of live action and classic Disney animation bursting with south of the border sights and sounds! When Donald receives a magical collection of gifts from his Latin American friends, they become his passport to a fantastic musical journey with Joe Carioca and Panchito, the charro rooster. With these experts to guide him, Donald hops, skips, and jumps his way through every splash of local color -- each stop full of surprises and sensational songs!

3 out of 5 stars Love the movie, hate the censorship.......2007-03-01

I am a HUGE fan of this movie, but this DVD (as well as the Saludos Amigos, Melody Time, and Make Mine Music DVDs) seriously panders to the soccer-mom crowd. Smoking (from Goofy in Saludos, and an innocent bystander in Caballeros) is "digitally altered" (i.e. censored), while Jose Carioca (who is in both movies) still HAS his cigar!

If Disney had wanted to censor smoking, they should have "digitally altered" Jose Carioca's cigar! I wouldn't be complaining about it if they'd been equal-opportunity butchers (and even then I'd be complaining).

Please Disney, since you're putting the Three Caballeros into the place once occupied by El Rio Del Tiempo, PLEASE re-release this on DVD and PLEASE kill the butchering!!

5 out of 5 stars Classic donald at his best.......2007-02-13

This Disney movie was the 9th animated feature to be released by since Snow White. This ancient movie was first released way back in 1944. This year marks the 63 anniversary of this movie was first released in reel format and was later in the late 1990s or early 2000s was reformatted into VHS format. A word of warning even though this movie got a G rating I do not recommend it to any one under the age of 7. If you are 7 to ten years of age this movie should be fine for you. The reasons why I don't recommend this too any under seven is cause it has some parts with mild cartoon violence and there are also are several parts when character of Josa is seen using a cigar and is holding in his hand or mouth and occasional seen puffing on . In addition there is also a part mid way through the movie with a short brief use of Voodoo magic when Donald and Hosa have to say and incantation then put one of there fingers in there mouth blow to make themselves grow bigger so they can get access to the rest of Donald's other birthday presents. For those of you that like Disney movies but think this movie is to light and not intense and dark enough and want more adventure and action and your 11 years old or older I recommend Sleeping Beauty, Sword and the Stone and The Black Cauldron. For kids thirteen and older I recommend Pirates of The Caribbean Curse of the black Pearl and Dead Mans Chest.

4 out of 5 stars Curious Mix of Walt Disney Animation.......2006-10-13

THE THREE CABALLEROS is a curious mix of Walt Disney's animation. Some of the film is traditional and familiar of the Walt Disney genre of the time. Donald Duck is the center figure in this Latin American travelogue with a mixture of animation and live action. "The Cold-Blooded Penguin" sequence come off best. I love the DVD. It is vivid. You can even see the original brush strokes!

2 out of 5 stars Love the movie, hate the DVD!.......2006-06-10

This was one of my favorites as a kid. I was really disappointed with this DVD. You can see the film grains, especially in the live action/animated scenes. Also, I don't remember the film entirely, but it seems like they left ALOT of stuff out that was in the original movie. Its weird that they would NOT take the time to perform a restoration of some sort when transferring from VHS to DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Disney Does Latin America, for better or worse.......2006-05-28

Although Disney originally released this feature (and "Saludos Amigos") in the 1940s to improve relations with Latin American countries, I think it's a bit more effective as an introduction to Latin music, art and dance. Carmen Molina does a beautiful rendition of "You Belong to My Heart" (although "Solamente Una Vez" sounds much better), as does the singer of "Bahia". The genius of "Caballeros" is the animation, although the integration of animation and film looks shoddy to our "Finding Nemo"-accustomed eyes, it was pretty cutting edge at the time of its release. Also, it's almost as though the color palettes in the animation were used to reflect Latin American art and textiles: vibrant golds, orange-reds and verdant greens. I don't think you need to be in an altered state to enjoy the hap-hazard animation - just enjoy the detail and coloring. This would be a 5-star review if Disney animators had done better research - there's several spelling errors on the maps shown in the film (i.e. "Valpraiso" instead of Valparaiso). I guess Disney didn't figure that any Latinos would actually pay money to see this film back then. I heard people complain about Donald Duck's blatant womanizing in this film, but I saw this as a kid and never really picked up on that.{Who can blame him around us Latin women ;>)} Apart from that, this is an enjoyable film for kids & adults and a nice way to get a taste of classic Latin ballads, dancing and a little art too.

I loved this documentary! I only wish it were a six part series.
Moro No Brasil is a glorious taste of Brazilian musical culture.
A great buy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great excuse to have a party.......2007-04-09

I invited some friends over to see this movie with me. It was very well done, informative, and exciting. My guests and I were spellbound by the scenery, as well as the in-depth information about Brazilian music. Hearing all the different kinds of music, and seeing the musicians and singers, was wonderful. There was a cohesiveness that increased our understanding of the culture, almost as if we were experiencing it first hand.

4 out of 5 stars For those interested in Brazilian music it's a must have!!!.......2007-03-10

This is a road-movie which covers many places in the huge Brazil where music plays an important role. The director had to choose some places and kinds of music to focus on, because otherwise he would have made Moro no Brasil I, II, III, IV, V, etc.
The places and the artists chosen are simply delicious!! The places are very authentic and the artists are incredibly spontaneous!! The movie makes us understand how Brazilian people are so musical, and that's because their own nature!! Music is in their blood and DNA!! Many times the most humble person is capable of creating excellent music without any training, classes or instruction!!!
I don't know if this happens in other places, but for sure Brazil is one of the places to research about good music!!!
Enjoy!!!

4 out of 5 stars Nice documentary.......2007-02-06

Very nice documentary, but I think that "Brasileirinho", from the same director is more focused and more interesting.

"Moro no Brasil" starts showing the Brazilian native indians and their musical roots in the Northeast. Then it quickly moves to Bahia and then goes to Rio de Janeiro, where Samba becomes the main subject.

It's a patchwork, showing a lot of different people and a great variety of musical traditions. Good job for a 100-minute documentary.

5 out of 5 stars If You Like Forro this film is marvelous.......2006-11-27

Someone totally obsessed with the music of Northeastern Brazil made this film, and he was willing to take the lesser names, along with the legends to make his passionate point...the point being that this music is born of the dust of Brazil, of the best part of the Brazilian collective heart, of the part we all who love Brazil have saudade for... I was riveted the entire time and feel a debt of gratitude to the director for sharing this remarkable music and the even more creative people that transcend their tough lot in life bearable through music.

Description

Stan "the Sound" Getz was one of the most highly regarded saxophonists in jazz history. He had an appealing sense of melody and a command of the technical. However, it was his tone that Stan Getz was known for - that rich, distinct tone that was envied by so many musicians and praised by countless critics. His last concert recording is presented on this DVD, recorded live on video in 1990, one year before his death.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars second to none.......2007-06-15

Makes you fall in love with jazz all over again. Finest music ever created. Easy to see why Stan was The Man on the tenor sax. Kenny Barron, on piano, is a genius in his own right.

I realize Stan's was a tumultuous life, I read the tome, but am not judging that here (never had the right to judge anyway), what I am praising is the pure artistry and magical playing. Absolute wonder.

5 out of 5 stars ckoehne.......2006-03-17

The last work of the greatest saxophonist that ever lived. What more can you say. He died the following year of lung cancer, yet was able to put forth the most mellow tones that this instrument is capable of producing. His accompaniament on piano, drums and base are just as inspired.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Getz - a must have!.......2005-02-23

Captured on video and in excellent fidelity, this Munich concert is a wonderful display of the collaborative relationship of Stan Getz and the pianist, Kenny Barron. Considering that Stan had already been diagnosed with cancer and left us scarcely one year later, it's amazing how strong and convincing he sounds. Some great jazz standards(e.g., "Seven Steps to Heaven"), American pop standards (e.g., "What is This Thing Called Love") as well as a few titles that are unobtrusively augmented by synthesizers, it is an all around terrific document of a great artist. Highly receommended!

5 out of 5 stars Must-have Getz!.......2005-01-25

Those who appreciate the artistry of Stan Getz simply won't want to miss this DVD! It finds Stan, pianist Kenny Barron and the rest of the group in top form live in Munich, Germany just a year before Stan's death. The program includes a nice mix of jazz standards (who plays Billy Strayhorn's "Blood Count" any better?) and selections from the "Apasionado" CD. Both audio and video are excellently captured in a beautiful concert venue. It's one thing to hear this jazz master perform but watching him do it adds yet another satisfying dimension to the performance. And watching the musical interplay between Stan and Kenny (whom Stan described as the other half of his heart) is fascinating. I would give this DVD my highest personal recommendation!

3 out of 5 stars Wish it had better sound quality.......2007-05-27

This dvd has me scratching my head wondering why nobody spent the extra money to make what is a good dvd into a great one... especially since there are no other current War dvd's available... Why Jerry Goldstein why.. So what's the problem?...the audio on this dvd is comparable to a good quality concert bootleg tape... It is not even in stereo let alone have Dolby noise reduction... It sounds very muddy at times other times better...all instruments tend to bleed together or say when the sax is playing fade to the background,in other words a loud instrument drowns out the rest, the guitar is rarely heard... The video is ok not great... we could live with it if the audio made up for it. Another odd thing is apparently whoever put this together did not know War very well.. Song number 2 is called All My Sorrows but is really Slippin' Into Darkness(all my sorrows is a line out of it) and Gypsy Man is spelled Gipsy Man...speaking of Gypsy Man it features great Lee Oskar harmonica playing that was amazing to me...The band plays loose and good here and on the whole concert.. Bottom line if you love War like me you will want and should buy this as the guys greatness still shines thru here... just run your audio output into your TV for this one not your stereo and you'll be alot happier..
