With over 100 albums to her credit and a career that spanned over 50 years a new generation of singers like Cristina Branco, Mariza and Dulce Pontes have sought to emulate her style and come to recognize and embrace her as the greatest Fado singer of all time. This concert was recorded in Tokyo, Japan in 1986 at the peak of her creative powers. The DVD includes over 90 minutes of great music.

The presentation and promotion of this DVD does not mention the fact that this is a recording of the Artist's 1986 concert in Japan, and also not in full, which was released in full as DVD by Immortal as IMM 940099 - also available from Amazon. The Japanese subtitles suggest that this is a recording from a Telecast, rather than Immortal's apparent recording in the auditorium. This sort of sales practice should not be encouraged, and we - the consumers - can make our opinions register by the like of this sort of cheats by buying elsewhere. Amazon - please remove this listing from your website.

Not enough can be said/done to educate the casual reader about Fado/Amelia Rodrigues within the confines of a review. Thus, let's proceed with the rationale for giving this DVD only 3 stars:

This is a live recording from a concert Amalia Rodrigues gave in the '80's in Japan. The image doesn't seem to look well on the traditional TV's aspect ratio. Japanese captioning adds to the sense of frustration of the non-Japanese viewer. Amalia's performance is rather ordinary, and camera work and sound are barely acceptable as presented on the disc. If the producer of this DVD had done more than to transfer from a Japanese master video tape straight on DVD it would be too bad for his effort since it doesn't show.

Too bad for those who approach(ed) this edition with an above-average sense of anticipation; disappointment looms around...

Brace for a bad dvd.......2005-10-10

When Amalia was alive I couldn't find a good video of her performances. I hoped that, as a tribute to her life, after her passing away Portugal (or someone else) would issue a good dvd. That hasn't happened yet.
There are just 2 dvds available, both pirate: one from Japan (bad video) and this one in NY (live at Town Hall) which is a bootleg from an old tape. I knew it was going to be bad but I was naïve...
I think the original filming was bad. Colours are ugly and the camera settings were inappropriate. The result is one every amateur would get with a video8 camera. The difference is that there have been several cameras present.
When in close-up, the image breaks in a bizarre way so all you hope for is that they zoom out and Amalia doesn't move too much.
The sound is fairly OK (for an amateur recording).
The menu is ridiculous, you cant even read the titles of the songs. A child experimenting with a shareware program could author a better dvd menu. Im not joking!
Even the cover is of bad taste and wrong doing: the photos are distorted and Amalia looks like having an egg for a head. I mention all these details (and u didn't even see the dvd label!...) in support for my affirmation: appalling dvd production!
I think you should buy this only if you miss watching Amalia and hope some day a full concert will be released in a pro quality.

I was so very pleased with my first order of the dvd, Amalia, live in New York, I'm beginning to ordr additional copies as gifts for my family and friends, which I'm sure they will enjoy as much as I do.

This is a pirate release of the video "Amália Rodrigues, Live in New York City". If you like to buy this video I recommend that you purchase the VHS version distributed in the US by Kultur-Whitestar and in Europe by EMI Music or wait for the actual legal US DVD release.
