The Broadway's Lost Treasures Collection consists of the three volumes previously released on DVD plus a never-before-available fourth disc, The Best of the Tony Awards: The Plays. The first three discs deliver what the title promises: historic performances of great moments in American musical theater televised on the Tony Awards starting in the 1960s and into the new millennium. Unlike some other arts, theater has rarely been well-documented, so it's a treat to see these numbers performed by the original artists rather than experience them through audio recordings or tepid movie adaptations. Sure, sound and picture quality are only adequate, some of the numbers are minimally staged and some appear to be lip-synched, and some of the performances that do have excellent film counterparts seem rather lackluster here. But those are minor drawbacks compared to the chance to see Gwen Verdon performing "All That Jazz" and "Nowadays" from Chicago and "Whatever Lola Wants" from Damn Yankees; John Raitt singing The Pajama Game's "Hey There"; Alfred Drake singing Kiss Me Kate's "Where Is the Life That Late I Led"); a 33-year-old Jerry Orbach performing Promises, Promises' "She Likes Basketball"; and 12-year-old Andrea McArdle breaking hearts in Annie's "Tomorrow."
The second and third volumes feature newer, fully staged performances that are almost indistinguishable from an actual show, including scenes from splashy, high-energy revivals such as Anything Goes (Patti LuPone and company performing the title tune) and Guys and Dolls (the fabulous "Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat"), and new shows such as Grand Hotel (Michael Jeter and Brent Barrett in a gloriously exuberant "Take a Glass Together"), Les Miserables ("One Day More"), La Cage aux Folles (George Hearn solo and with a chorus line in drag in "I Am What I Am"), Ragtime (the opening number), and You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (Kristin Chenoweth's "My New Philosophy"). The new generation of splashy dance-oriented musicals are also represented by the likes of the 42nd Street revival (the title tune and "We're in the Money"), Fosse ("Sing, Sing, Sing"), and Crazy for You ("I Can't Be Bothered Now").
The Best of the Tony Awards: The Plays features 19 of the dramatic and comedy excerpts showcased on the Tony Awards telecasts between 1969 and 2001. From 1969 are James Earl Jones and Jane Alexander in The Great White Hope and Art Carney in Lovers, and other performances include Maggie Smith and Margaret Tyzack in Lettice and Lovage (1990), John Lithgow and B.D. Wong in M. Butterfly (1988), Joan Allen and Peter Friedman in The Heidi Chronicles (1988), and Joe Mantegna and Ron Silver in Speed-the-Plow (1988). The performances aren't specifically organized by date or performer, but the collection concludes with four excerpts from August Wilson works followed by three Shakespearean works. The excerpts are brief, lasting 2-3 minutes each, and even though each segment is introduced by a narrator, this format clearly works better for musicals than it does for plays. Regardless, it remains a rare chance to see stage performances that for the most part are not available on home video. Collectors who already own the three musical volumes, however, will have to weigh how badly they want The Plays when they consider mostly duplicating their purchase with the Broadway's Lost Treasures Collection. --David Horiuchi

Classic Broadway Shows.......2007-03-30
Almost every show on this DVD is a favorite of mine and has been for many years. It's great to have these true treasures at your beck and call through this DVD. Some of these talented performers will never be seen again. I am very, very happy with this DVD. beti schwartz
Broadway Stars.......2007-03-20
Broadway stars abound in these DVDs. There is a wonderful variety of clips and the narrations and interviews are good, as well. Such talent! Gregory Hines, Robert Goulet, Richard Kiley, Julie Andrews, and more and more to knock you off your feet. Don't pass this up!
Almost Perfect.......2007-02-27
I saw this on PBS and immediately decided to buy myself a copy!
While these excerpts are not from the broadway shows themselves, they are from the Tony Awards and are therefore, 'live.' And it's just wonderful to experience the level of 'energy' that great actors project when performing live on a stage.
There are a couple of songs that I don't particularly care for myself (Worst Pies in London), but most are wonderful, and the performances, while not 100% flawless (this WAS filmed live) are almost all engaging.
A few comments:
Yul Brenner manages to project more energy just standing there in the background than his co-star singing her heart out in "Shall We Dance." She is, alas, a fairly indifferent actress, and is overwhelmed by her enormous dress!
Lip-synced or no, Robert Preston in "Music Man" is wonderful. As is Joel Grey's fabulous MC in "Caberet." Again, it's all about energy.
I'd honestly never even heard of Patti Lapone before I saw this show, but she blew me away with her powerful voice. (Evita.)
"All that Jazz" and "Nowadays" from "Chicago" is, alas, much too short, but delightful.
The most unintentionally funny bit -- Twiggy looking either utterly bored or utterly terrified (but completely out of character, regardless) as she struggles with a simple dance routine in "Kicking the Clouds Away," (From "My One and Only.") She must have not realized that the camera had her in close up ...
Recommend this 100%
Finally some good music!.......2007-01-24
I loved this collection especially because there will really never again be a group of such talented performers and writers. The people nowadays just don't have the talent!
Met my expectations.......2007-01-16
I saw part of the Broadway's Lost Treasure Collection during a Public TV Fundraiser. I ordered it for myself and sent a second collection to a friend for a Christmas gift. The collection is well worth the money.

Amazon.com essential video
A live concert at Carnegie Hall filmed in September 1998, My Favorite Broadway: The Leading Ladies gathers a glittering lineup of Broadway's best, past and present. Some marquee names such as Bernadette Peters, Patti LuPone, and Betty Buckley are conspicuously missing, and Julie Andrews hosts but does not sing, but it still has Liza and stars aplenty from the '90s (Bebe Neuwirth, Faith Prince) as well as the '70s and '80s (Elaine Stritch, Jennifer Holliday, Nell Carter). The older stars sing songs from landmark original roles, while the '90s stars tend to sing either songs they've performed in revivals or songs from older shows--curiously, modern headliners such as Audra McDonald and Linda Eder sing older material rather than the contemporary shows (Ragtime, Jekyll & Hyde, respectively, among others) with which they are strongly associated.
A number of these performances might be slightly inferior to those on the original recordings, but there are a number of gems, and the star power of the whole lineup is undeniable. In addition, even though only a few numbers provide action to watch, video is a valuable format for this concert because it gives faces to stars who most viewers outside of New York might recognize only by name or still photographs, and also allows fans to catch up with yesterday's stars. (Those who were dazzled by Andrea McArdle's cameo in the 1999 TV remake of her original star-making vehicle, Annie, will love her sweet, understated performance here.) Furthermore, the 99-minute video program provides more footage than the PBS telecast (85 minutes) or the CD release (61 minutes). This is highly recommended for Broadway fans. --David Horiuchi
Description
On a September evening last fall, at New York's venerable Carnegie Hall, a star-studded audience was treated to a concert of Broadway showstoppers performed by the greatest divas of the American theatre. Under the baton of musical director Paul Gemignani, the American Theatre Orchestra accompanied Liza Minnelli, Audra McDonald, Linda Eder, Nell Carter, Andrea McArdle, Jennifer Holliday, Lea Delaria and a host of other Broadway luminaries in what was certainly the event of the fall season. Featuring selections from Chicago, A Chorus Line, Showboat, Guys and Dolls, Ain't Misbehavin', Dreamgirls, Company, Gypsy, Man of La Mancha, On the Town and others, this evening of song and celebrity will live forever, preserved on home video for any time you feel like bringing up the curtain! Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 soundtracks. 100 minutes.

Dream A Little.......2007-03-24
When you want to escape-purely escape-into a dream-like musical state, then 'The Leading Ladies of Broadway' is for you. There are show-stopping performances scattered throughout, especially the A.L. Weber Love Trio which is magnificent! If you are thrilled when you hear a wonderful song performed by an exceptional voice, you must have this recording. Julie Andrews moderation lends an elegant flair.
Good Entertainment.......2007-03-17
Although this is not the best concert I have ever watched it is a superb DVD to have in one's collection. I have watched the DVD four times since receiving it, less than a month ago, and enjoy it more each time as I grow to know the performers I have never seen or heard of before. Seeing Julie Andrews is always a delight to me.
The best 'chapter' of the DVD, for me, is Nowadays/Hot Honey Rag performed by Karen Ziemba & Bebe Neuwirth. It is excellent. The two ladies were superb together. Bebe, technically, is the better of the two but I loved them both.
The best performances were: Nowadays/Hot Honey Rag, Nothing, Everybody's Girl, Some People, The Lloyd Webber Love Trio, Life upon the Wicked Stage and Adelaide's Lament.
The best performers were: Bebe Neuwirth, Karen Ziemba, Priscilla Lopez, Debra Monk, Liza Minnelli, Rebecca Luker, Kit Kat Girls, Dee Hott and Faith Prince.
All the ladies were superb in their own ways. The only performer I was really disappointed with (and she was greeted with such delight by the audience when she came on, and after) was Jennifer Holliday. I hated her hairstyle to start with. She obviously has great talent but I detested the way she sang 'And I'm telling you I'm not going'. I don't mind anyone giving their all but I hated her rendition. If her throat hurt her after the show I'm not surprised. Someone needs to fine tune her natural talent, because she certainly has it. Miss Holliday, I would like to have seen you perform another song where you could have blown my mind away.
Audra McDonald impressed me with her varied singing styles. She is delightful.
Of course every review is subjective and what I don't like, someone else could love.
All-in-all it is a wonderful evening's entertainment.
They're the TOP.......2007-03-14
I first saw this when it was on PBS ... and then bought the CD and finally the DVD was available and I grabbed it up. It's brilliant. Not all the top performers of B;way are included but enough to say "what a group of Broadway legends...all in one room!" Star power, to say the least! If you want to know why these women have remained on top you only have to watch this program. They are the cream of the crop. In just one song these women illustrate why they are up there. Elaine, Liza, Karen, Audra, Marin, Dorothy and, of course, Julie, to name a few. I've watched this DVD many times and it nevers gets stale (as some do)! Incidently, if you want to catch a few more cream of the crop, check out the DVD of the concert version of Follies with Carol Burnett et. al. Brilliant!
My Favorite Broadway - Leading Ladies.......2007-02-18
The remastered picture & sound quality of the DVD and was excellent. Three(3)day delivery was faster then I expected.
Exellent DVD.......2007-02-02
This DVD has many of the broadway divas on it and there are some stand out performances, ie: Man of La Mancha. A real classic.

The third volume of Broadway's Lost Treasures continues to mine historic stage performances from the vaults of the Tony Award telecasts. For fans who are used to experiencing musicals only through audio recordings, the benefits are two-fold. First, you can see great stars performing classic songs on stage, including Alfred Drake (Kiss Me Kate's "Where Is the Life That Late I Led"), Gwen Verdon and Ray Walston (Damn Yankees' "Whatever Lola Wants"), and a 33-year-old Jerry Orbach (Promises, Promises' "She Likes Basketball"). Second, you can see more recent, fully staged performances of numbers from shows that you may not have seen on Broadway or on tour, including the opening number of Ragtime, Kristin Chenoweth (You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown's "My New Philosophy"), and especially the new generation of splashy dance-oriented musicals such as the 42nd Street revival (the title tune and "We're in the Money"), Fosse ("Sing, Sing, Sing"), Black and Blue ("T'ain't Nobody's Business if I Do"), and Crazy for You ("I Can't Be Bothered Now," though it would have been nice to see one of the bigger numbers like "Slap That Bass" or "I Got Rhythm"). As with previous Treasures, the older performances tend to be minimally staged, one notable exception being the relatively obscure How Now, Dow Jones (1968) getting a set, costumes, and choreography.
Two other performances don't have quite the sizzle they could have. Julie Andrews performs three songs from her Lerner & Loewe canon (My Fair Lady's "Wouldn't It Be Loverly" and "I Could Have Danced All Night" and the title song from Camelot), but they're not vintage; they're from the 1991 awards. (The cover art showing a young Andrews is thus misleading.) Ethel Merman also performs a medley of three touchstone songs (Girl Crazy's "I Got Rhythm," Call Me Madam's "You're Just in Love," and Gypsy's "Everything's Coming Up Roses"), but in 1978, almost two decades after her last great role in Gypsy. But any Merman footage is rare, and this was before Andrews's infamous vocal troubles, so it's still enjoyable, even stirring, to see these distinctive and distinguished artists. Really, any disappointment with the Broadway's Lost Treasures series is only quibbling, as fans are lucky to have this footage available at all. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:
A good volume 3.......2006-11-15
I now have all 3 volumes of this particular set, and like the other ones, it has its' ups and downs. Ups?? Definitely "My New Philosophy" by Kristin Chenowith from the revival of "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown"; Jonathan Pryce doing "The American Dream" from "Miss Saigon"; the late (and most definitely great) Jerry Orbach doing "She Likes Basketball" from "Promises, Promises" (so that is what he looked like in 1968), Zero Mostel doing "Comedy Tonight" from "Forum". The downs?? Desi Arnaz's song was much too short, Roert Goulet singing "The Happy Time" (is that the best they could find for him?)
But the best part is that for the younger Broadway fans is that this volume, like the others, lets them see the greats of Broadway at their best. And it reminds the rest of us just how much fun it was to watch the Tony Awards then.
It's ok........2006-07-31
I only bought this one for the song by Jerry Orbach. The first 2 DVDs were better.
The Broadway add-on.......2006-07-18
If you own Broadway Treasures II, it might be a good idea to round out your collection with Part III. This DVD is not as good as Broadways's Golden Era and Broadway Treasures II, but it's worth the purchase price to have the full collection.
Lost treasures? Some aren't even 5 years old!.......2006-06-07
This rather chaotic collection of broadcasts from the Tony Awards is -- by far -- the weakest of the three.
Firstly, how can a somewhat confusing collection of snippets from the 2002 revival of Into the Woods be a lost treasure only a few years later? If you wanted to include something from the show, why not use the original production, instead?
All in all, almost half of the performances are less than 15 years old. Some of which deserve to be included in this series (such as the haunting opening number from Ragtime or Chita Revera's "Where You Are" from Kiss of the Spider Woman), but perhaps in later editions.
There are some performances that are ... curious ... selections, at best. Such as an incomprehensible medly fomr Rose Marie, which hasn't played on Broadway since the 1920s. Then again, it was introduced by Robert Goulet, who performed in it. (Something that gives me the giggles is that a troup of male-voiced Canadian Mounties have got bosoms and lipstick, showing that it was obviously lip-synched.) Another example would be the production number "Step to the Rear" from How Now, Dow Jones. This seems to be included only because Tommy Tune was in the chorus (and it was introduced by Tommy Tune).
Then again, the clips taken from the 1971 Tony broadcast (to honor previous Tony-winning musicals) are disappointingly short (like Gwen Verdon performing "Whatever Lola Wants" from Damn Yankees) because of the time they originally played. Watching Zero Mostel in a toga over his tux performing a shortened "Comedy Tonight" was wonderful, even if it did seem like a tease because of its brevity.
Other gems include contrasting Ethel Merman's and Angela Lansbury's versions of "Everything's Coming Up Roses" from Gypsy and the late Jerry Orbach's "She Likes Basketball" from Promises, Promises.
All in all, this is a welcome edition to the library of a hardcore Broadway musical fan. For the general public, though, I highly recommend the first two volumes of this series instead.
highs and lows.......2006-05-01
This DVD has some very ho-hum material, so unmemorable that I can't recall what I want to say about it. I agree with other reviewers that the lip-synched Angela Lansbury is quite lame. However, can we talk about why I bought it?
The 42nd street number is everything you expect from broadway--the ultimate huge tap number.
Debbie Allen's performance of "America" is quite satisfying.
I cried tears of nostalgia listening to Julie Andrew reprise Camelot and My Fair Lady.
The Fosse Number (Sing, Sing Sing)is so very, very Fosse.
After viewing the title number from Ragtime, I will now have to move heaven and earth to see the show.
But....this DVD is worth owning for the soul-stirring performance of Michel Bell singing "Ol' Man River" in Showboat. Bass voices are not known for their clarity, but this guy is simply amazing. The beauty and passion of this performance is overwhelming. The harmony of the cast is gorgeous.
BTW, I saw him perform it live on stage in the musical. When the number ended, no one clapped for a span of few seconds. All that could be heard in the Fabulous Fox were sniffles---coming from all the audience members who were moved to tears. True story.

A Great Trip Down Memory Lane.......2004-11-05
If you have a real love for the history of musical theatre, this DVD is a must for your collection. There are several highlights that are simply joyous. The Larry Kert, Carol Lawrence "Tonight" duet is heart rendering and a treat for the ears! This alone is worth the price of this DVD. But, add to that the young and beautiful Julie Andrews in her prime as she delivers the quintessential version of "Lovely". And, you will understand why so many raved about Pearl Bailey in "Hello Dolly". When she sings "Before the Parade Passes By", she does not merely sing the music, she also sings the lyrics and this is something Carol Channing never really did. The great Gwen Verdon singing and dancing as only she could from "Sweet Charity", the magnificent voice of Richard Kiley delivering the ultimate version of "The Impossible Dream" and vibrant Pat Suzuki belting out "I Enjoy Being A Girl" make this a special treat. Add to that Celeste Holm's "I Can't Say No" (nobody does it better) and the sight of the legendary Barbara Cook as part of the group (John Raitt, Florence Henderson, Celeste Holm) singing a rousing version of "Oklahoma" and you have one great DVD. The only song that does not come across well is Carol Channing singing a rather forced version of "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend". But why quibble. Buy this infectious delight!
Invaluable.......2004-10-29
Pretty much without exception, the original cast performances in Broadway musicals are matchless. However, the ephemeral nature of theatre makes it impossible to relive these performances over and over as we do with film, and often Hollywood translations missed out by hiring "bankable" Hollywood names. How lucky that Ed Sullivan led the way in featuring many of the original Broadway greats on his show. Of course, there are MANY more of these segments which I'd like to see make their way to DVD, but the segments presented here are superlative. The running list follows... Almost every one presents a Broadway star who was replaced with an inferior (and dubbed) Hollywood name in the film adaptation.
1.ANNIE GET YOUR GUN (1966)
"There's No Business Like Show Business" - Ethel Merman
2.OKLAHOMA! (1955)
"Oklahoma!" - John Raitt, Celeste Holm, Florence Henderson & Barbara Cook
"I Cain't Say No" - Celeste Holm
3.FLOWER DRUM SONG (1958)
"I Enjoy Being a Girl" - Pat Suzuki
4.GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES (1959)
"Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" - Carol Channing
5.MY FAIR LADY (1961)
"Wouldn't It Be Loverly" - Julie Andrews
5.WEST SIDE STORY ( 1961)
"Tonight" - Carol Lawrence and Larry Kert
6.CAMELOT ( 1961)
"What Do the Simple Folk Do?" - Julie Andrews and Richard Burton
7.THE ROAR OF THE GREASEPAINT, THE SMELL OF THE CROWD (1965)
"Who Can I Turn To?" - Anthony Newley
8.MAN OF LA MANCHA ( 1966)
"The Impossible Dream" - Richard Kiley
9.SWEET CHARITY (1966)
"I'm A Brass Band" - Gwen Verdon
10.HELLO, DOLLY! ( 1967)
"Before the Parade Passes By" - Pearl Bailey
Wonderful performances from classic shows.......2004-10-04
I must respectfully disagree with the reviewer who felt that most of the performances on this DVD were "wooden." My reaction was quite the opposite! I felt that the actors and actresses were really performing the parts, just as they would have done them in the actual shows. I often forgot that I was, in fact, watching a clip from a variety show, and felt as though I were watching the show itself on Broadway (and I have been to many Broadway shows, so I certainly know what that experience is like!)
I especially enjoyed seeing the clips of Julie Andrews in "My Fair Lady," Carole Lawrence and Richard Beymer in "West Side Story," and Celeste Holm in "Oklahoma!" Of course, there were a few actors and/or shows which I just don't personally like very much (Anthony Newley, "Man of La Mancha," Gwen Verdon), but that's not to say that their performances weren't well done.
I also enjoyed the narration by John Raitt, and hoped to see more of him (he is just shown singing the title song from "Oklahoma!") There is supposed to be a "Part 2" DVD coming out with more of Raitt included, as well as performances from many other shows. I hope it is released soon!
My only reason for not giving this DVD 5 stars is that the quality of some of the clips isn't very good, but that is understandable considering how old they are.
I would definitely recommend this DVD over "Broadway's Lost Treasures," which I found very disappointing.
Best of Broadway?.......2004-03-26
I bought this DVD with great delight as I love Broadway Musicals. I was quite disapointed in the performances of the songs. The performers for the most part were wooden and uninspired. Carol Channing singing "Diamonds Are a Girls Best Friend" was a notable exception, though. She conveyed the fun and humor of the song and gave a great performance. There was close to no staging, just the artist standing there singing. The interviews with the composers while interesting, would have been better as part of the extras. They seem to simply be there to fill out the DVD. The space could have been better filled by more performances.
I expected so much more than what this DVD delivered. Buy "Broadway's Lost Treasures, instead. The money is better spent and the DVD is much more entertaining.
A Time Capsule from the past.......2004-02-28
This was pure delight - straight from a time when live TV broadcasts were the norm. I've always loved Broadway musicals, and I look forward to Part Two of this one (it was previewed on the DVD and even told us what would be included).
How pleasant to watch nearly an hour of wonderful performances and note that no-one had to grab their crotch to call it entertainment.

This October 2000 follow-up to 1998's My Favorite Broadway: The Leading Ladies allows the gentlemen in, but that's not always an advantage. Sure, Michael Crawford developed a great following as the Phantom and Nathan Lane is a comedian nonpareil, but Tom Wopat, Brent Spiner, Peter Gallagher, Adam Pascal, and Ron Raines, while all fine performers with good resumés, simply can't match the marquee power of the original's Liza Minnelli, Audra McDonald, Jennifer Holliday, Nell Carter, and many others. And even when old vets appear, Robert Goulet seems closer to Las Vegas than Lancelot, and Barry Manilow (mostly making his name as a composer these days) looks pretty awkward. That said, this is still an enjoyable live show from New York's City Center (also available on CD). Among the ladies returning, Rebecca Luker and Marin Mazzie shine in songs from the revivals they star in, and super diva Linda Eder raises the roof with a three-song medley. And there are other additions to the roster, one legend, Chita Rivera (reprising her "English Teacher" from Bye Bye Birdie), and one up-and-comer, Heather Headley (sharing her "Elaborate Lives" duet with Aida costar Pascal).
But the first 100 minutes is all prologue, anyway. The real star is the host, Julie Andrews, who also hosted the original show and conspicuously did not sing in it, following her infamous, lawsuit-laden vocal-cord surgery that effectively ended her music career. Throughout the evening she teases the audience, reciting lyrics and making references to My Fair Lady. So when Crawford begins the finale, "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face," and Andrews enters, the audience holds its breath: Will she or won't she? It's an electric moment, and perfect theater. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:
Superb Cast and Mesmerizing Performances.......2007-03-24
A star-studded performance of Broadway love songs. Although I cannot recognise most of these great artists, I am most impressed by their great performances and stage presence. To name a few of the impressive numbers: The elegant Julie Andrews's lyrics reciting was special; The Three Mo' Tenors, singing La Donne E mobile followed by Let the Good Times Roll, mixed fun and serious singing superbly well. Joan Hess's wonderful dancing against the piano accompaniment of Smoke Gets in Your Eyes was graceful, nostalgic as well as modern. Her beautiful stature is like a painting. All in all, this is an eye-opening and highly entertaining experience and the DVD quality, both audio and visual, is excellent.
Broadway Songs.......2006-03-24
I liked the DVD which I basically got for two reasons: Julie Andrews and Michael Crawford. I was introduced to new performers on Broadway, which I do not have the opportunity to visit at all. The quality of the CD is great.
Love Songs?.......2005-12-11
This is one of those things where you have to have to aquire a taste for it. Sure there are some songs that are definitely a good add to any Broadway collection, but if you're a classical Broadway fan you might be a little...disappointed.
The singers include-
Nathan Lane
Chita Riviera
Michael Crawford
Robert Goulet
Bebe Neuwirth
Marin Mazzie
Barry Manlow
Adam Pascal
Brent Spiner
Rebecca Luker
Peter Gallagher
Tom Wopat
Heather Headley
Ron Raines
Jeffrey Denman
Joan Hess
Brent Spiner
Linda Eder
Michael McCormick
Michael Mulheren
and of course, Julie Andrews, who provides us with some of her memories from "My Fair Lady" and briefly sings in "The Rain in Spain".
It is fun seeing some of the women who were in the Leading Ladies make a return (Linda Eder, Marin Mazzie, Rebecca Luker, Bebe Neworth, Julie Andrews, and anyone I've forgotten) but if you have not gotten the Leading Ladies (though you should!), this is lost on you. Some of the songs have been jazzed up and were better left alone. Other songs too do not really fit into what you'd think of as a "love song" category-do "Lullaby of Broadway" and "Brush Up Your Shakespeare" speak "love" to you?
Though it is definitely worth buying to see such stars as Julie Andrews, Michael Crawford, Chita Riviera, Robert Goulet, and Barry Manlow (if you're a fan) if you're expecting love songs from Rodgers and Hammerstein, West Side Story, or Jule Styne you might be a little disappointed.
By George, she's got it!.......2005-07-20
This DVD is a wonderful evening's entertainment. If you're anything like me then you'll applaud after the acts even if you do look like an idiot. Rebecca Luker, Bebe Neuwirth, Chita Rivera and so many others shine--such talent! My favourite numbers include "Brush Up Your Shakespeare" "I'm A Brass Band" "Every Single Day" and of course, the finale.
When Michael Crawford sings "I've Grown Accustommed To Her Face" and Ms. Andrews comes on and speaks her lines in the cockney accent, you can tell that the whole audience is captivated. Then, when she starts to sing...it's just incredible. That standing ovation was well-deserved.
You can see when the camera goes to the audience that they have had a wonderful and entertaining evening. And so have I, and so will you.
Best DVD I've ever purchased!.......2004-02-25
I am a big Julie Andrews fan, and this is a nice addition to any of you guys who collects julie andrews stuff. It is true that she teases the audience the whole time, and towards the end of the show, finally, she did it. It was a great moment, most especially by knowing her voice is damaged. she only sang 10 words, but it will not make the program as spectacular without it. Well worth your money, enjoy!

Great way to start your collection of Best Pictures.......2007-02-03
This is the set of 18 Best Picture winners on DVD that Warner Home Video controlled the rights to as of Feb. 2005, and spans the time period 1929-1992. Some of them hold up over time, and others were given the award because of technical achievements that no longer seem important. I'll go through each one and give my opinion:
Broadway Melody of 1929 - This was the first "talkie" to win the award. The screenplay is a mediocre love story, but the song and dance numbers are good. There's even a musical number in Technicolor - "Wedding of the Painted Doll".
Grand Hotel - Won in 1932 and contained a great ensemble cast about the personal lives of guests in a fancy Berlin hotel. This is a great one that still is worthy viewing today.
Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) - Probably the best of all the pictures about the famous mutiny. Still good viewing today. An odd aside - all of the nominees for best actor that did not win were from this film - Clark Gable, Franchot Tone, and Charles Laughton.
The Great Ziegfield (1936) - After the Hays code was fully in effect, the personal aspects of Ziegfield's life had to be modified for the screen. Still, a great movie with a great performance by William Powell as the famous showman.
The Life of Emile Zola (1937) - One of those period pieces that just didn't grab me. It is a very skillfully done film, very artistic, and Paul Muni gives a tremendous performance in the title role. It's hard to believe the articulate and gentile Emile Zola is being portrayed by the same actor who was equally convincing in "Scarface".
Gone with the Wind (1939) - This movie charts the life of a Southern belle who always wanted what she didn't have and took for granted what she did have as she lives through the Civil War and reconstruction. It is the most popular film of all time and probably the biggest money-maker if you factor in inflation. It was shown in movie theatres until it made its TV debut in 1976.
Mrs. Miniver (1942) - This is a good film, and it has great acting, but it is one of those films that probably won because of the times. It depicts how the British coped while under seige during World War II as experienced by one British family headed by Mrs. Miniver.
Casablanca (1943) - This one probably won because of the wartime theme, but it is a great piece of moviemaking that just gets better with time. The chemistry between Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart just oozes off the screen. It's more what's not said than what is in this film. The fact that Bogart didn't win best actor was one of the great injustices of all time.
An American in Paris (1951) - Of course the point of this film not the plot, it is Gene Kelly's dancing, which is fabulous as always. It inspired the quickly thrown together and even more popular "Singin In the Rain".
Around the World in 80 Days (1956) - A fun adventure, David Niven is great, and how they got all of those stars to play bit parts I'll never know. However, it really doesn't hold up as a great movie 50 years after the fact.
Gigi (1958) - The academy award winner in the year of my birth just does not inspire today. There are a couple of good songs, but not many. Plus the screenplay is antiquated and outright campy by today's standards.
Ben-Hur (1959) - One of those great Bible-era epics of the 50's. Even though it is a story on a large scale, it is all of the small scale stories going on that make it great - revenge, love, loyalty, loss.
My Fair Lady (1964) - One of the great musicals starring Rex Harrison in one of his greatest and most amusing roles. Nobody did stuffy British low-key comedy like Rex. He was robbed when it came to best actor, but fortunately the Academy rectified the situation a few years later.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) - Jack Nicholson is a rebel confined to a mental institution. When he doesn't conform, the evil nurse Ratchett has him lobotimized. A great film that will stir emotions even today.
Chariots of Fire (1981) - I personally love this film about the 1924 Olympic games and the conflict between God, country, and conscience seen through the eyes of two men - one a Christian who wants to be a missionary, the other Jewish who wants to be an insider in British society. It's a love it or hate it kind of film - either you find the internal struggles of these men compelling, or you'll find it torture to sit through.
Amadeus (1984) - Another of the modern era Oscars where you either love the message and love the film, or it puts you to sleep. I really loved this one too, partly because Mozart has always interested me, and partly because Salieri was such a ridiculous creature thinking he could best God by destroying Mozart. Didn't he ever realize that the fact that he recognized Mozart's talent before everyone else did was a talent in itself? If you can't build Microsoft yourself, then the next best thing was to have bought stock in it in 1975.
Driving Miss Daisy (1989) - The story of a wealthy elderly woman and her driver from 1948 up to the mid-70's. In spite of the difference in their races and the place - Georgia - they have much in common and slowly become friends. She is Jewish and he is Black in a time and place that wasn't ordinarily welcoming to either group of people. This is a sentimental favorite of mine, plus there's some good comic one-liners in it too.
Unforgiven (1992) - A different kind of Western in which Clint Eastwood wins his first award for Best Director. Eastwood is out to avenge the scarring of a prostitute in return for money when the justice the sheriff metes out on the offending cowboy is just not satisfactory to the prostitute or her friends. Eastwood plays an ex-criminal widower trying to make a go of farming when this assignment lands in his lap. In the end, he doesn't have a hard time finding his "inner killer". A really great film. Who'd have thought in 1965 that Ramrod Rowdy Yates had it in him?
This package is a good value at eleven dollars per Oscar winner, especially when you consider one of those Oscar winners is Gone with the Wind. Plus it has a good sampling of Oscar winners from all genres up to 1992. Depending on how you feel about the more modern Oscar winners (post 1965) that are usually slower, more thoughtful films, you may or may not feel the same. To me the only real dud is Gigi.
Also note that if you buy this set, "Studio Classics Best Picture Collection", and the new "Best Picture Collection", you'll have 29 of the soon to be 79 best picture winners. Not a bad start on your collection.
My only real complaints are that there have been four changes that should be incorporated into the pack to really make it complete as of Spring 2007 based on what is available, although it might require a price increase.
1. Ben-Hur is now available in a 4 disc special edition that includes the silent version of the film.
2. Cimarron, Best Picture 1930-1931, was released on DVD in 2006 by Warner Home Video and should be included.
3. After this pack was released "Million Dollar Baby" and "The Departed" won Best Picture for 2004 and 2006, respectively. These films are not included.
I'm really just pointing out minor flaws because, compared to all of the other studios, Warners has done the best job of putting all of the Best Picture winners they control into one attractively priced package.
Eighteen of the best movies of all time.......2005-09-26
This set contains 18 Best Picture winners from the Warner Video library. A few of them are fairly basic, with limited extras (Broadway Melody, Grand Hotel), while others are multi-disc deluxe editions (Gone with the Wind, Ben Hur). If you're looking to get your collection off to a start, with some of the all-time classics, I haven't seen a better boxed set than this one.
Best Picture Oscar Collection - fantastic present.......2005-09-21
This made my father very happy - has all the golden favourites and is great value.
good deal but not in collectible condition.......2005-06-11
It's a bunch of oscar winning movies from warner brothers with a great discount. but collectors beware of this set :
1. First of all, most of the items are not sealed. many of them looks like new, but some are not brand new, at least look like used!
2. I talked with 3 persons who purchased this item. all of them had complains about ruptures at the edge of some boxes which had caused with a blade or a sharp instrument.
3. there is not a huge outer box. only a wrap around all items.
after those negative points, lets say that, all of the DVDs are the best releases of each item. my word is, it's a good deal but don't expect to receive all of them in collectible condition! I don't want to blame warner but it seems that some of these DVDs are clean returned to market items!
This is a great deal; looks like they fixed the problems,,,.......2005-05-28
I purchased this set when the price was $140. However, I did not get Casablanca or Cuckoo's net SE's, but after I contacted AMAZON twice and waited for a while, they corrected the problem to my full satisfaction! I have never been happier with their service!
But, this is a great set because it has 18 of the best picture winners.
It has some of the best ones, and all the discs are the top of the line editions! way to go!!!
Now, if they could opnly get the last three best picture winners on DVD, I'd have them all!

Same as the other Ed Sullivan Broadway DVD.......2005-05-17
This is the exact same DVD as the other Ed Sullivan Broadway DVD. I bought it because there was no desciption and I wanted to see what this was. I don't know why Amazon decided to sell the exact same thing with a different title, but here it is. This is really "The Best of Broadway Musicals" on The Ed Sullivan Show. It runs 57 mins and has performances from "Hello Dolly", "MY Fair Lady", "Oklahoma!", "West Side Story" and others. For a fuller description, please see the other Ed Sullivan Broadway DVD.

Customer Reviews:
A Good Investment For the Price.......2004-01-25
It is difficult for me to critique a DVD Set that I only paid $5.00 for, but I will try. Everyone knows that the films themselves are enjoyable; so I will only talk about the DVDs quality wise. When I first considered buying this I was concerned that I would be unhappy because of all the complaints I have heard about the film prints. But, this is a great set with decent quality most of the time. If you are not that picky qualitywise and want 4 great films for a cheap price, I say get it.
Disc 1 - Side A Royal Wedding.
This print suffers from an overall darkness. The brighter scenes are decent, but when it comes to the night or darker scenes, the blacks and other dark colors seem to mix together. For the sound, it is actually pretty good(Probably the best of the set). Not crystal clear of course, but decent for a film 50 years old without any work done to it.
Overall grade = B
Disc 1 - Side B Perils of Paline
This print also suffers from the overall too dark look like Royal Wedding. The sound is a little worse than Royal Wedding. I would describe it as sounding somewhat flat. Overall grade = C+
Disc 2 - Side A Till the Clouds Roll By
This print seems to suffer from just the opposite of the last disc. There is an overall washout of color. The color quality isn't horrible, but it isn't great either. The color isn't as vibrant as it should be which results in it being a tad blurry. The sound on this is average. A little flat, but not as bad as Perils of Pauline.
Overall grade = B-
Disc 2 - Side B Happy Go Lovely
This film print is perhaps the best of the set. While it is by no means great, it is almost always dark when it should be dark and colorful when it should be colorful. The only complaint picturewise is on skin tones. Many of the scenes the peach skin looks pink or almost red. The sound on this is also comparable to Till the Clouds Roll By. Okay, but a little flat.
Overall grade = B-
Final words: If you like these films, you will probably enjoy this set as long as you are not one of those people who find films unwatchable if the video/audio quality isn't top notch.
Listed titles incorrect.......2003-05-01
A previous review of this DVD list the 4 movies as Royal Wedding,
Perils of Pauline, You Were Never Lovlier and The Pajama Game
this is not correct, the 4 movies are Royal Wedding,Perils of Pauline
Till the Clouds Roll By and Happy go :Lovely.
Happy go Lovely is an excellent color print and of all the releases of
Till the Clouds Roll By this is the best print that I have purchased although
in no way the excellent quality of the MGM video released, hopefuly one
day MGM may consider a DVD release
Listing lacks products details.......2003-04-09
No details of what the four movies are, so not possible to consider buying
