"Anything could happen!" declares Rik Mayall, co-writer and co-star of British TV show The Young Ones--and he's right. Though this manic comedy series centered around the petty bickering of four layabouts living in a communal house in London--paranoid, hyperactive new waver Rick (Mayall), dense punk rocker Vyvyan (Adrian "Ade" Edmondson), lugubrious hippied Neil (Nigel Planer), and would-be sharp guy Mike (Christopher Ryan)--at any moment the show could switch to kibbitzing rats or romantic vegetables, or Buddy Holly could be discovered hanging from a parachute in the attic. Bands (as varied as Madness and Motorhead) suddenly appear in their living room and pound out a pop hit. It all seems a bit spastic at first, but the frenzy grows infectious, becoming funnier the more you watch it (in sharp contrast to most sitcoms). The Young Ones aspires to have the elastic energy and surreality of a living cartoon and comes pretty close to the mark. Guest stars include Emma Thompson, Terry Jones of Monty Python, and Jennifer Saunders of Absolutely Fabulous. This compilation also includes a few documentary features and a couple of episodes from other sitcoms starring Mayall, Edmondson, and Planer (Filthy Rich & Catflap and Bottom). --Bret Fetzer

Each anarchic episode includes live performances from bands like Madness, Motorhead, The Damned and Dexy?s Midnight Runners. Not to mention guest appearances from stars like Emma Thompson (Wit, Much Ado About Nothing), Robbie Coltrane (the Harry Potter films), Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous), and many more!

4 out of 5 stars Young Ones.......2007-04-06

Nice anthology of this troupe. Viewing and sound quality is excellent. Third disc contains some very amusing and interesting "extras". I only wish they had made more episodes!

5 out of 5 stars English humor for Americans.......2007-03-18

English humor is famous for it's eccentricities but with the exception of selected Monty Python you need the English pedigree to really like it. The Young ones pick up where Monty left off. Outrageous, yet real, there is a plot line but it doesn't get in the way. It's a shame there weren't more episodes made.....

5 out of 5 stars British comedy!.......2007-01-12

This is the cheapest that you will find it, even on Ebay. If you like the young ones its a must have!

5 out of 5 stars The Young Ones: Every Stoopid Episode (3pc).......2007-01-10

If you like British comedy, you'll love The Young Ones. Still funny every time I watch them. Highly recommended. Great price.

5 out of 5 stars Dare I Say It: Even Funnier Than Monty Python?!.......2006-12-31

I know, it sounds like blasphemy. But, for those craving Monty Python-type humor with more of an anarchic edge, might I suggest almost any of the 12 episodes of this classic British TV comedy series. The Young Ones are four college "students" (never seen in school) - a punk, a hippie, an anarchist poet, and a self-proclaimed "cool person" - who live together in domestic disarray and dysfunction with amazingly hilarious results.

The best episodes are Cash (where punk Vyvyan is pregnant and Neil the hippie joins the police force - "Open up - it's the pigs!"), Bambi (where the lads go on a game show and Emma Thompson, Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry have early career cameos), and Flood (where London is flooded with 50 feet of water and Vyvyan goes to Narnia). The best comedy series ever!

This 1958 variation on Huck Finn's adventures with Jim finds a white convict (Tony Curtis) chained to a black convict (Sidney Poitier) as they both escape their captors. With each man literally stuck with the other, racial conflicts take a back seat to survival. Directed by Stanley Kramer (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner), the film's obvious consciousness-raising is mitigated by a pair of raw performances from the stars, memorable appearances by Lon Chaney Jr. and Cara Williams, and Kramer's strong storytelling abilities. The award-winning script was cowritten by blacklisted writer-actor Nedrick Young. --Tom Keogh

Description

Nominated* for nine Academy AwardsÂ(r), including Best Picture, The Defiant Ones broke new ground by delivering its message of racial tolerance through a fast-moving blend of action and suspense. It remains "a raw, powerful film that is as exciting as it is moving, real and literate"(Variety). Joker Jackson (Tony Curtis) and Noah Cullen (Sidney Poitier) are two convicts on the run. Escaping from a Southern work gang, the two men are bound together by an unbreakable iron chain and separated by an unbridled hatred towards each other. Relentlessly pursued by a posse and bloodhounds, they put aside their differences to survive. But when a lonely woman (Cara Williams) breaks their chain and deliberately sends Cullen to certain death, Jackson must decide what's more important: saving Cullen...or saving himself. *1958: Best Picture, Actor (Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier), Supporting Actor (Theodore Bikel), Supporting Actress (Cara Williams), Director,Story and Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen (won), Cinematography (won), Film Editing

5 out of 5 stars The Defiant Ones.......2007-06-26

Another of maverick producer/director Stanley Kramer's consciousness-raising social films, this tale proved a potent metaphor for race relations in 1958. Virtually simultaneous with the rise of the civil-rights movement, this progressive adventure eloquently presented the case for racial harmony in the story of a gutsy prison-break film. Poitier--who at age 30 was set to go where no black actor had gone before--more than holds his own with Curtis, then a big star, who plays the despicable "Joker" to perfection.

5 out of 5 stars Black and white fight and run.......2006-03-28

A black-and-white movie about a hateful pair of black and white convicts struggling for their lives and against each other. During the era of the film in the South, it is amazing that a black man would touch a white -- let alone be chained to him with a defiant attitude. What is more remarkable than the intense hatred and out-and-out fist fight is the bond that forms between this unlikely pair as they flee for their lives after a prison break. Pushing personal differences asside, they must learn to rely upon one another or die trying.

Movie quote: "I ain't gettin' mad, Joker. I been mad all my natural life."

5 out of 5 stars "That's a hell of a way to live- you keep quiet all your life and the only time you open your mouth is when you're dying.".......2005-09-09

The Defiant Ones is one of the great American films. Released in 1958, this starkly filmed story of two convicts on the run for their freedom evokes powerful emotions for the viewer. Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier are wonderful in their roles and display a level of screen chemistry that has been sadly lacking in contemporary films. It is hard to say which one is better due to their very different but equally powerful performance. As one might expect, the two cons start out hating each other, but slowly develop a grudging respect for one another as they learn about the others life and eventually a kind of friendship is formed. The secondary story concerns the posse on their trail and the friction that develops amongst them as the chase goes on. Cara Williams is memorable as the woman that Curtis cares for while on the run and is the character that causes a change in his attitude that leads directly to the bittersweet ending. Theodore Bikel is also very accomplished as the beleagered Sheriff and Lon Chaney Jr. is very good as a townsman who has a special reason for aiding the 2 cons in their escape. The Defiant Ones is a great film that almost 50 years later still prods us with the reminder that YES, WE CAN learn to overcome our differences over race and live with and care for each other. Both Curtis and Poitier are at the top of their game here and each received an Academy Award nomination deservedly. A final note: watch the last scene and decide for yourself- was it an accident or did one friend make a sacrifice for another?

3 out of 5 stars Bonding Under Pressure.......2005-06-04

The Defiant Ones
The opening scenes show a dark and stormy night, and a truck running down the highway. Inside are some prisoners. An accident occurs, and two prisoners escape. The Sheriff arrives at the scene, and some volunteers come to help. One has a modern portable transistor radio. They await the bloodhounds, and the prisoner's laundry for their scent. The dog handler has brought Dobermans to run with the bloodhounds. The Sheriff wants the dogs kept on a leash (SOP).

The two prisoners, white and black, have contending opinions and interests. Chained together, they must learn to cooperate. The actions of the Deputy Sheriff could serve as a tutorial for a manhunt in the wilderness. The pair cross the rapids; no dogs can follow their scent now. But this old, old trick will only delay good dogs as they search the banks. When they rest at night, hunting goes on by other animals. The next night they arrive at a company town, and break into a store. People hear the noise, and capture them. Since one of the villagers was hurt, the townsmen plan to lynch them. A conflict among the townsmen saves their lives; or was it the reward money? For some reason Big Sam lets them go (or the film would end too soon). Their interpersonal conflicts arise again; no stunt doubles were used. A young boy finds them, they find his home, and food from his single mother. A hammer and chisel breaks their bond, but Charlie falls ill. The Sheriff follows their trail to the turpentine camp, but the people there don't know nothing. Like some Big City? The film shows the characters of the rural poor, who can dream of a world they're never seen. The boy's Mom nurses Charlie, then chooses to leave with him. The Mom sends Color to the trackless swamp, but Charlie fights with her over this betrayal. [The son needed more target practice.] They try and fail to board an escape train, and listen to the baying of the hounds. The police trail them to the swamp. The Sheriff goes on ahead to capture them single-handedly (in time for his re-election). They are caught after a long run.

It was a novel film that set a precedent. Its production values are similar to TV dramas of that era. The scenes in the film suggest an origin in a stage play. This monochrome film was produced and directed by Stanley Kramer. Its moral is how different interests can bond together when facing a common foe; nothing radical here.

3 out of 5 stars it doesn't get much more inauthentic than this.......2005-05-29

tonight's primetime movie offering on the local public television station was The Defiant Ones (in the original black and white, thank G_dess ). imagine a bunch of former Ku Klux Klansmen and their bubba buddies from the backwoods of Georgia trying to pull off "Fiddler on the Roof" to get some kind of idea of how howlingly inauthentic this production is. (the bloodhounds did sound real, though.)

nonetheless, i give it 3 stars because this exercise in (supposed) 'social realism' is about something other than sex and violence.

well, at least it isn't about sex.

okay, not explicitly so.

besides, it's always fun to see character actors from that era, like Claude Akins and Lon Chaney, Jr, even with the volume muted to escape the jarringly false-sounding accents of their fellow performers.

of course, Sidney Poitier (with or without audio) makes the other leading players seem like students doing summer stock (not that they needed his help to do so). but then, that's why Sidney Poitier is Sidney Poitier.

and, hey, they all meant well, which is more than can be said for much of today's offerings from popular culture.

The three nostalgic British musicals in the Cliff Richard Collection are a good reminder that, thanks to a few short years in the 1960s, Sir Cliff can legitimately include "film star" on his already exceptional show business résumé. The Young Ones (1961), Summer Holiday (1963), and Wonderful Life (1964) would make tame fare for a teen audience today, but they retain a polished and honest charm that might surprise the sharpest of cynics.

First and foremost, of course, they were Cliff Richard vehicles: designed to showcase his all-around talents and capitalize on his first, heady wave of pop chart success. They are also unashamed homages to the heyday of the MGM B-musical with familiar themes: let's put on a show/save the youth club/make a film. But with up-and-coming directors Sidney Furie and Peter Yates making imaginative and sophisticated use of wide-angle camerawork and fresh, snappy choreography by Herbert Ross and Gillian Lynne, they also have plenty of assets other than Richard's wholesome appeal. There are some fine set pieces and surreal flashes, notably the history of cinema in Wonderful Life and the extraordinary mime sequence in Summer Holiday. They also tap into the very British energy of a group of young actors and dancers including Una Stubbs, Susan Hampshire, Melvyn Hayes, and Richard O'Sullivan, as well as Richard's band at the time, the Shadows. For sheer verve, the films deserve to be seen on their own merits. --Piers Ford

5 out of 5 stars And About the Picture Quality.......2007-04-06

I bought this collection because I'm a big Cliff Richard fan, and these musicals are a lot of fun. I was expecting an OK picture transfer onto DVD, because these are pretty old and I figured no one would really care.

What a pleasant surprise!

I had just bought a new HD-DVD player, and even though these aren't in HD, the picture quality is just stunning. All three are fine transfers, with good sound too.

Like the other comments say, "Summer Holiday" is the best of the lot, but all three are good nostalgic fun.

If you like 1960's era musicals, you can't go wrong with this set.

5 out of 5 stars Silly gone on that Cliff Richard.......2004-04-29

As handsome as his marionette Cliff Richard Jr. in the 60's british movie Thunderbirds Are Go, Sir Cliff Richard shows as the brightest star in the universe through three delightful movies. I was just glad to have found the collection after listening to Richard's songs on karaoke. My favorite is Summer Holiday, but I recommend watching it last out of the three movies. They are all brimming with laughs, love, and heart melting vocals. You're in for a real treat!

4 out of 5 stars Splashy British Attempt at Hollywood style musical.......2006-01-18

Cliff Richard charms here as a singer and dancer (he's very good) in this big budget British musical starring Cliff Richard and the Shadows. There are only two rock songs in this movie. The rest of the score consists of Broadway style ballads and group set pieces. Enjoyable. The storyline (wholesome teens try to keep their dance club from being knocked down by a developer) is so old that you can be astounded by its lack of originality but the staging is colorful, fun, lively, and top notch. Think of this as the British "Hairspray." Dancing 4 stars; Songs 3 stars; storyline 2 stars; photography and direction 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Great Entertainment.......2005-09-20

This is one of these movies that remind me of the musicals that Hollywood used to make. The storyline is very good and the song and dance scenes are terrific. Cliff Richard puts on a fine performance in this movie.

5 out of 5 stars British Rock 'N' Roll Group Makes A Film.......2002-01-23

The story is about a group of young people who frequent, and run a youth club. The leader, Nicky (played by Cliff Richard) is a rebellious rock 'n' roll singer while harbouring a dark secret he must keep from the other club members. The youth club land is about to be sold to property developers unless the gang can renew the Lease. The race is on as the gang have to put on a show (secret weapon: The Mystery Singer) to raise enough money to defeat the millionaire developer (A whimsical yet menacing Robert Morley).

To some extent this is a typical vehicle for a pop star, but Cliff acquits himself well and fares better than Elvis did in some of his movies. There is a pretty good soundtrack featuring several great songs written by Cliff Richard's backing group, The Shadows, plus one or two old-fashioned musical numbers.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Classic.......2007-01-16

I have loved both of these series since they were first aired on television. I had taped them on VHS first time around - so my tapes are getting abit knackered, and who buys video players these days anyway. It was great to get the whole lot on DVD in one hit - all really nice quality recordings.
My all time best TV comedy ever is Bottom (the wife even laughs)and this set is fantastic, especially the out-takes at the end of each disk. They all go for about half an hour (not censored)- It just proved to me how mad these guys are.
Just buy this set - You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Social decline at its finest........2006-11-23

The Young Ones is a hilarious look at four college rejects and their "foreign" landlord (who claims to be a Brit in one episode). Almost every episode had my sides hurting from laughing so hard. Every Stoopid Episode proudly sits on my DVD shelf right next to Fawlty Towers and Flying Circus.

5 out of 5 stars It's a Video Nasty!.......2005-08-30

This was one hilarious British comedy that captured the 80s mainstreaming of New Wave (formerly punk rock) at a very brief moment. They were the perfect melding of stereotypical college students: the dirty hippie, the punk rocker, the shifty cheat who seems to live a double life, and the new wave liberal. They're young, loud and snotty, and proud of it! And did they have filthy hygiene habits! The music acts they had on were perfect snapshots of the time. Some faded away into obscurity, some remain classics (Madness, The Damned and Motorhead made some memorable appearances) that we go back to when nostalgia rotates. Neil's moaning and depression are hilarious, Rik's annoying, Mike's a scumbag, and Vyvyan's a self destructive antics make them all the most obnoxious bunch of guys who ever shared a house. Something about the filth of the houses they lived in, their terrible attitudes, and the violence was so punk rock. And it's completely brilliant!

But where's Bad News?

5 out of 5 stars Bloody Brilliant.......2005-04-14

It's rude, violent and vile. And I love it. In the early 1980's, alternative comedy was beginning to take hold in Britain, and the Young Ones really led the way. The phenomenal cast includes Nigel Planer, Christopher Ryan, Adrian Edmondson and Rik Mayall as four lazy students living in a rundown apartment. Antics include a yearly pilgramage to the laundrette, an ill-advised appearance on University Challenge, and a petrol bomb in the fridge. It's the style, certainly not the premise, that makes this so appealing. Intermingled in the loose storylines are performances by musical guests (like The Damned), cutaways to scenes that have nothing to do with the story, and lots more. Oh yes, there are numerous references to the god-like Cliff Richard as well.

Watch the whole set and you'll spot British comedy luminaries in various one-off roles, including Hugh Laurie, Robbie Coltrane, Emma Thompson, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders (aka Mrs. Adrian Edmondson).

The series is, quite frankly, brilliant. And it all comes to a tragic end in "Summer Holiday" (a Cliff Richard song, naturally), when the boys drive their stolen double-decker bus off a cliff, exploding upon landing.

"I'm on board the freedom bus, and I haven't even paid my fare!" exclaims Rik with glee. Indeed. Buy this now.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest BritCom: Youg Ones Is Funny .......2005-02-09

What you need to know is that this is one of the most ridiculous and bright telley shows ever created. It is totally absurd and for that reason it is quite hilarious. At times is seems stupid but then it amazes the viewer with bright lines and absolute hilarity. I first encountered "The Young Ones" when it was shown on Comedy Central in the early '90's. I was an early teen then and while I found it funny I think I can relate to it much better now. This boxed set of DVD's is terrific and the best assortment of "The Young Ones" available.

The show is comprised of for young men Vyvyan, Neil Rick and Mike who share an apartment. Vyvyan is a vim and venom punk rocker, Neil is a burnt out hippie, Mike is sort a total lady-killer and Rick is a Communist pseudo intellectual. Naturally these four don't fit well together and each has a different way of handling the insane situations they find themselves in. Almost every scene of every episode is shot in their apartment and in spite of this money saving technique the show is fantastic and though sometimes a little slap sticky.

My favorite character is Rick: his lines are well written and ring so true as he tries to be a smart little Marxist. He is also such a funny character to watch as his blood boils in aggravation with his housemates antics. Vyvyan angers him as he generally finds breaking things to be the solution to any problem. Vyvyan is often the instigator or the exacerbator of the mayhem that transpires. Neil and Mike are also necessary characters though I don't think they are the stars of this show.

You had better go and get this now before something bad happens to you. This really is a great show and is certainly among the best British TV available. If you like Mr. Bean, The Simpsons, Family guy or Malcolm in the Middle this show will certainly appeal to you. This DVD set is the best way to get the show and is well worth the price.

      Product Description

"A horrible, vile, disgusting sitcom about four students who live in the most revolting house in Britain", The Young Ones became an instant BBC comedy landmark in 1982 by launching an all-out assault on the moribund sitcom, mixing Monty Python-esque madness with post-punk anarchy. There are no real stories, only a succession of often hysterically funny scenes as ingenious gags collide with deliberately corny lines, cartoon-like ultra-violence, pop music breaks, surreal interludes with characters ranging from the Three Bears to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and gross-out moments based on various bodily functions and substances. Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson, Nigel Planer and Christopher Ryan are the four housemates: Rick (Cliff Richard-worshipping radical sociology student), Vyvan (violence-loving punk medical student), Neil (put-upon suicidal hippie) and Mike (self-styled cool guy). Alexei Sayle appears regularly playing various mad Russians. Taking a cue from National Lampoon's Animal House (1978) the show now seems to anticipate the teen gross-out flicks of the late 1990s but to far more amusing effect. In retrospect The Young Ones is cheerfully un-politically correct in a way which may shock more now than 20 years ago; certainly some of the insults and drug-taking would have trouble getting on TV today. The first series was followed by a second equally hilarious series; Mayall and Edmondson played essentially similar characters in Filthy, Rich and Catflap (1987) and Bottom (1991-5).

4 out of 5 stars Prepare to lose your mind.......2005-12-03

In my opinion, The Young Ones especially are absolutely essential viewing. Especially for Americans, as they tend to labour under the impression that the English are all prim and proper. Can you decide if the gentleman is a driving instructor from Johannesburg, or really a vampire? Little Britain does nothing to preserve what is left of your sanity, with material that is often off-colour and off-the-wall.

Those comfortable around "alternative" British humour will like it. Those who have never encountered it before should realize that the jokes are as much in the context and the timing as they are in the situation or the words. These are NOT sitcoms.

As much as I like both the series, I'm only giving this four stars because they simply don't go together. There are much better pairings. I wouldn't suggest waiting for anyone to fix that, though.
