Customer Reviews:
Better than expected.......2006-10-30
I bought this with low expectations for guitar instruction. I just knew it would be entertaining to watch Brian jam up close and personal. Well, from a performance perspective this was great. From a guitar instruction perspective, it was better than expected. He spends a lot of time breaking down "Too Hip, Gotta Go" with detailed descriptions of his unique picking style. He doesn't go into too much detail about theory, such as how to substitute jazz chords. The only thing that bugged me was that this was obviously filmed during the swing revival of the early 90's, and Brian goes a little overboard with the "swing" and "bop" references. Also, this is a video that was recorded to VHS in the early 90's and has been converted to DVD. I've read some reviews that indicate the conversion quality isn't very good, but in my opinion the quality was excellent. I highly recommend this if you are a fan of rockabilly, early rock, swing, or just entertaining guitar playing. Even if you aren't a guitar player, this is entertaining enough for Brian Setzer fans to own anyway.
There is no problem.......2006-08-27
Because the commodity arrives early, it satisfies it very much though it was an order from Japan. The commodity is good and the content is the highest. Thank you.
Howd ya do that?.......2006-08-24
First off, this is vhs conversion to dvd item and the quality of course is not that good.In this video brian shows his virtuoso skills very niceley but you must keep in mind this dvd is not aimed at the beginner.only a good intermediate player can make good use of watching the split window examples. The demonstrations can be very intimidating for the beginner and the quality of the booklet included is very shoddy.Brian should really come out with his own.He would make a mint. This was shot in 92 so i think a second dvd would be much better thought out. This dvd is staying with me until i am a better player though.I would have bought it even if i wasnt a student just to watch brian noodle around!Great fun!Oh yeah, the looping on the slow mo is very helpful but on screen tabs are barely readable.
Not Very Good.......2006-08-18
I have owned this video lesson for about 3 years now and have gone back to it many times. First of all, Brian is entertaining in the video and plays awesome, however, he never provides the detail as an instructor to analyze his playing. You can learn some cool licks from this video, but not understand how or why they were constructed.
Definitely not a beginners' video and I would not recommend it. There really are some better rockabilly instruction videos out there that would serve you better.

Johnny Cash is one of the most imposing and influential figures in the history of music. This special collection includes two programs which detail the incredible six-decade career or this 10-time GRAMMY-winning artist through performances, rare archival footage and photos. Scoring over 100 hit singles during his career, The Johnny Cash Anthology takes viewers on a journey which begins with the 1950s hit "Cry, Cry, Cry" and continues through the 1990s classic "Bird on a Wire." Sure, Johnny Cash is a country superstar and a founding father of rock & roll--but why, exactly? Johnny Cash: The Anthology is an efficient and highly enjoyable effort to answer that question through a rare historical perspective. Comprised of a 54-minute documentary and a supplementary film entitled Half Mile a Day, The Anthology places Cash dead center at the junction of gospel and blues traditions: between the isolation of hard living in America, delusional guilt from too much sin, and the fragile redemption of love. Drawing upon archival footage of Cash performing his earliest crossover hits ("Five Feet High and Risin'," "I Walk the Line") and including comments by admiring peers (Rodney Crowell, Porter Wagoner), The Anthology makes a compelling case for Cash as a master of knife-edged economy and a populist oracle from a younger, perhaps scarier, America. If it has become too easy over the decades to take Cash for granted, The Anthology sets things straight. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
poor quality piece, but..........2006-03-02
i was extremely disappointed with this dvd, in both content and quality.
i expected a wider range of archival video footage from his preformances and some selections are in fact taken from same performances. fourteen live performace songs is an extreme understatement of his ability to capture his audiences, be it for a television broadcast or live concert. the anthology is padded with distracting talking head video footage taken from the documentary and the fades between frames were less then desired.
but...
the "bonus" documentary was redeeming. "half mile a day" is definitely the stronger half of this dvd; perhaps the documentary should in fact be the primary material with the anthology being the "bonus" selection.
i ranked this dvd at two stars because i purchased it for the performance footage and not the documentary.
Too much talk, not enough music.......2005-11-19
Five stars if this is a referendum on Johnny Cash, three stars for this premium-priced dvd.
The songs are good - Cash was a great entertainer, and the chance to see him through almost fifty years of performances is welcome. The `Half Mile a Day' documentary is informative and somewhat adoring, with a number of performers and record-industry folk attesting to Cash's greatness. It gives you a sense of the man behind the music. A peek rather than a critical examination, but satisfying enough.
Still, `The Anthology' pretty much repeats everything in `Half Mile a Day.' The songs are presented complete in Anthology, chopped up in Half Mile. Some of the talking head comments appear in both programs, as well.
Half Mile includes a bit of Cash singing `Turn! Turn! Turn!' with Judy Collins, which kind of indicates the dvd producers had access and rights to Cash's old television program. As a fan with extended demands for premium priced dvds, I'd have appreciated maybe another dozen songs - from the television show, or somewhere - and that much less talking heads.
Mon père a adoré.......2005-07-19
C'est un cadeau qui a bien plu à mon père pour la fête des pères.
Excellent.......2004-12-15
I can't get enough of Johnny Cash, I'm glad I purchased this DVD.
Lots of Johnny in his younger days. A lot of his hits uninterrupted
This is a must for any Johnny Cash fan.
Thank the Lord for the Man In Black.......2004-01-17
Didn't think I'd ever hook up the DVD player I got for Christmas, until I just got this and David Allan Coe's DVD for my Birhtday and that meant I had to hook it up and fast! I've watched them over and over. This is wonderful.

It IS a Rockin' Christmas with Brian Setzer.......2007-05-14
If you love the Brian Setzer Orchestra, you'll love this holiday extravaganza. It's packed with BSO hits plus holiday songs with a new, hip twist. It'll get you in the holiday mood.
The very best.......2007-04-19
It doesn't get any better than this. Much much more than just a Christmas show. We watch this several times a year AND at Christmas time!
Dynamic.......2007-03-04
I think Brian Setzer put a lot of fun into his performance. I'm sure he enjoys his work, but he likely wouldn't call it that. He's a great musician, and his bands are great. A fabulous segment occurs when they play 3-piece group and play closer to rockabilly. However, all the show is extremely good. There is extremely fine choice of music. I didn't know he did " Blue Christmas"! I could watch and watch, and I find myself moving around.
Incredible Show.......2007-02-15
This is an instant holiday classic. I can watch this over and over and never get board with it. The concert is shot well, the audio is great, and Brian and the orchestra are top flight musicians with terrific arrangements and the perfect blend of tradition and innovation. Buy it. You will not be disappointed.
Great Christmas Show.......2007-01-15
I found that this is something more than just your average Christmas show. If you are looking for some good rock-n-roll with a Christmas twist to it. This DVD is for you

Rockabilly Delight (not for beginners).......2007-04-07
This DVD showed several styles of rockahilly playing. The teacher slowed it down and included a section on jazz or horn chording. A booklet is included to help. I recommend buying a comprehensive book on chord forms to supplement this booklet. Practice the chords until you know them cold. I keep replaying the DVD and discover new things to practice. Very well done instruction by Troy Dexter.

Description
"Roy Orbison is the greatest singer in the world." -Elvis Presley. Roy Orbison: In Dreams is the definitive chronicle of Roy Orbison's incredible career, told in his own words as only he could tell it. This revealing program includes classic music performance, personal home movies, photos, location footage and interviews with the stars Roy Orbison touched with his music. The remarkable body of work by Roy Orbison is tied not to any one decade, but virtually the entire life span of rock `n' roll. He began his career in the 50's, a friend and contemporary of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash, and scored eight Top Ten hits between 1940 and 1964 with songs like Only The Lonely, Running Scared, Dream Baby, Crying, In Dreams, It's Over, and Oh, Pretty Woman, becoming one of the only American artists to ride out the British Invasion. He was inducted in the Rock `N' Roll Hall Of Fame and joined the Traveling Wilburys alongside Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and George Harrison in the 80's. In the 90's, his posthumous album, Mystery Girl, became the biggest selling album of his illustrious career. "In 1975, when I went into the studio to make "Born To Run", I wanted to make a record with words like Bob Dylan, that sounded like Phil Spector
but most of all, I wanted to sing like Roy Orbison." - Bruce Springsteen. "His great gift was to turn the pain and bad luck that he experienced into groundbreaking songs. - Bono. Guest Stars: Bruce Springsteen, Robert Plant, Bono, Jeff Lynne, Barry Gibb, Maurice Gibb, Robin Gibb, Bill Wyman, Chris Isaak, Bernie Taupin, k d lang, Raul Malo, Dwight Yoakum, David Lynch, Martin Sheen, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chet Atkins, Emmy Lou Harris.
Customer Reviews:
In Dreams.......2007-05-30
Excellent biography of Roy Orbison. Information about him is hard to come by, especially his personality. This DVD covers his life from youth on with interviews of those who knew him well. It gave me a much better understanding of someone who was evidently a nice man as well as a great singer.
Roy is great - editing...so so.......2006-08-08
You have to be a REAL bad editor to kill this marvelous artist , but by golly...they've done that!
no sensitivity whatsoever to cocert footage which is chopped like a bad "mohell" from hell. and just like a grown up average jewish kid...i didn't like it a bit.
The voice over comes right before the musical picks instead of flowing before or after the songs , creating a horrible hybrid -no concert and no documentary.
I'll probably rewrap it and stick it to the next sixtysomething surprise birthday boy.
Surprise THIS!
Absolutely fantastic - Roy is a musical Genius.......2006-02-17
This is a must-buy for any fan of Roy Orbison. I bought the Asian version in Taiwan, but the content is the same. Each of the songs sung by Roy are treasures and the DVD has several of his best selling, most famous tunes. In addition, included are less popular, but equally marvelous songs (such as Walk On - in a performance that brings goose bumps to my arms each time I play it). Enjoying Roy perform would be enough reason to buy the DVD, but what makes this DVD extra special is the insight that many talented performers give between songs into how revolutionary was Roy in his song writing technique and also in how he recorded songs. I knew Roy was big, but I had no idea that he had influenced so many big names in the music industry. Listening to the Bee Gees, Bono, KD Lang and many others explain in what ways Roy influenced them is a truly insightful and interesting interlude to each song. I cannot recommend this DVD more highly.
This is really simple!.......2006-02-15
I have not seen or heard "In Dreams" yet but it is fantastic!
How do I know?
It's Orbison, by God!

Not a great instructional DVD.......2007-06-23
I was hoping for a DVD that broke-down Rockabilly guitar styles but what I got was a two DVD set watching Jim Weider play guitar and wondering, how the heck did he do that?
1) This DVD is NOT for beginners. If you are not an accomplished finger-picker, don't bother with this DVD, you aren't ready for it yet..which I am not.
2) The only really instructional parts of this DVD set are the two booklets that come with each of the DVDs showing the TAB for the various licks.
On a positive note, Jim is a fine player and it if this DVD was $10, I wouldn't mind watching him play so much.
Buy This Now.......2007-01-20
If you want to learn about rockabilly, buy this DVD set above all others. Wieder takes you through the rockabilly greats in detail - explaining not only the licks and rhythm figures, but also the gear these guys used. You get great material on Scotty Moore, Eddie Cochran, Paul Burleson, etc. Very different styles, but all covered very well.
I have wasted a lot of money on so-so rockabilly DVDs, but this set I will keep forever.
The best source for learning rockabilly.......2006-02-27
I used to see these at Mars Music many years ago and thought they were over-priced ($40 for one vhs tape) and looked kind of cheesy. Since then I've bought several books and videos on country and rockabilly guitar.I eventually bought both of these on vhs from ebay several months ago. I was floored by how much info there is here and how much stuff I got wrong (I always wondered why my versions of "Jeanie Jeanie Jeanie" and "Something Else" didnt sound like the original-now I know). I didnt hesitate to order the DVD versions. Alot of great detail goes into Chuck Berry's rhythm playing (thats right-rhythm),Scotty Moore's wacky fingerpicking and Paul Burlison's playing. Theres also plenty of Eddie Cochran and Duane Eddy too. This is a great place to start. I also reccomend Paul Pigat's Rockabilly Guitar DVD from www.learnrootsmusic.com. Amazon should be selling this stuff too.

OK, I guess..........2007-01-20
This DVD is sort of a disappointment, primarily due to its very short running time - 1/2 hour. The material presented by each guitarist is very brief, with the James Burton and Brian Setzer segments being the longest. It is not really coherent. I think Hot Licks could have pulled a lot more material together and made a better product.
What is presented is just too short and lacks any type of context.
Good DVD to watch and get inspired.......2006-09-01
I just got the DVD and was first impressed on how quickly I got the package from the time I ordered it. The DVD is great for inspiring to play better, and that's why I ordered it. It has a great introduction and I would have liked to have each segment a bit longer and more in depth, but whatcha gonna do? The only problem I saw was the camera angles were not the same on the instructors and I wanted to have a better view of what was going on. It also claims that there is "Slow motion segments with standard pitch sound". Not on my player! There was nothing listed in the menu for slo-mo, and my DVD player doesn't have sound when I'm doing that, so I don't know where they get that selection from. THAT would have been cool to witness, but pausing the DVD each frame is still hard to see where the dudes fingers are exactly. Also listed "Artist biographies", and "suggested listening". Couldn't find anything like that on the menu either. James Burton had the only segment where he broke down the solo's on several songs. Brian Setzer was a hoot to watch, but it wasn't very instructional in my opinion. He mostly concentrated on fancy fills that were way too fast for me to pick up on without the aid of the "slow motion" listed. Just my two cents worth. I have no regrets on the purchase and will do the best I can with what I have. Joe

Customer Reviews:
Very Good Rockabilly DVD.......2007-01-20
I have looked at a lot of rockabilly instructional DVDs, and this is one of the better ones. Trovato takes you through some basic rockabilly rhythms (boogie woogie and finger picking-type stuff), and he walks you step by step through three solos: one Carl Perkins flavored solo, and two Brian Setzer flavored solos. The solos are long, but he breaks down the licks so you can shorten them, pull isolated ideas out, etc. The solos have some meat to them, so there are some good ideas to take away. Oh, jam tracks are included that cover the solos.
This is a good follow on to the Jim Weider rockabilly series (my number one recommendation).
My only complaint - no tabs with the DVD, either printed or in pdf format.

Not What You Are Being Told it is........2007-05-12
This DVD (the one with the British flag as part of the picture) is not what is being claimed. It does have Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Haley, Little Richard, and Chuck Berry singing. It does not have all those extras that the other reviewers talk about. Like Screaming Lord Sutch, and that Magician. It is only 50 minutes long, although all info about it, including the case it comes in claims that it is 84 minutes long. So just be aware that you are not getting what you might believe you are getting. As for the actual DVD. Not that great. Jerry Lee really seems off in this one (his voice sounds shot). Little Richard sings ok if you like screeching. He seems very hostile, and that does not endear him to me. Chuck Berry is good, but he goes on a long time. The accoustics are not great, and as the sun goes down, the lighting is not good either. All in all I would not have gotten this if I'd known what it was really like, and that I was not even getting what was promised.
No Alice Cooper As Advertised.......2005-01-20
Although this video shows great concert footage of various artists such as Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley, it fails to show any footage of the advertised Alice Cooper. Just like as advertised on "Roger Daltrey: A Celebration - With Pete Townshend and Music of the Who (1994)," no Alice Cooper appears in this video either. Please see reviews for Roger Daltrey: A Celebration - With Pete Townshend and Music of the Who (1994) for further infomation:
This may not interest too many people, but since the DVD is listed under "Alice Cooper", and since he performed the song "I'm A Boy" at THIS concert, I went and bought it. BUT THEY CUT THE TRACK OUT! There's no, repeat NO, Alice Cooper track on this DVD! So buy it for any other reason than I did! Or look for a VHS copy of the whole concert or the 2-CD-set.
--Dr. Oliver Spang
DO NOT BUY if you are looking to see Alice Cooper because HE AINT IN IT!!!
The First Rock Show At Wembley Stadium.......2005-01-10
This show is apparently legendary, but I never heard of it, but picking it up from the cheapie bin was no regret after watching it. It started off pretty slow, some guy came out doing some kind of pre-Alice Cooper style horror theatrics, but even the crowds hippies and punks didn't seem to enjoy whoever he was very much. They only seemed to react when he brought out the naked dancers.
Bo Diddly - He puts on a nice blues number. Forgive me for forgetting the title of the song, I'm not a fan of his. But he preforms well.
Jerry Lee Lewis - His performance is very ... ummm, if I use my own words I'll end up censored, he preforms a couple of numbers like he has died and someone has his hand up his behind using him as a ventriloquists dummy. Great balls of fire sounded a bit off key. I skipped through most of his performance.
Bill Haley - He only performs the one song, twice, but I gotta say he preforms "Rock Around The Clock" exactly the way he recorded it! Well, singing it anyway.
Little Richard - He brings the house down, pretty much everything sounded excellent, but I think he was gasping for air or just off key during "Lucille".
Chuck Berry - The final act of the night, Chuck Berry is the show stopper. He preforms a lot of his great numbers and does them so well. I'm a hardcore AC/DC fan and when people say that Angus Young is just Chuck Berry with more volume, they aren't wrong! Chuck turns on the distortion halfway through his performance and has that much Angus like sound. Chuck rips through many numbers, some combined, some full, some extended. Chuck was "The Man" of the hour performing for over 20 minutes, going over his time he was supposed to be on for, they even pulled the plug on him because he wouldn't get off, but they turn it back on so he can finish up.
Theres no extras, no subtitles, no nothing, it's in 2.0 sound, the picture quality is decent, few specks now and then, its not digitally restored or anything, but much like it has come from a VHS. Mick Jagger is in the interviews parts in between songs, but there is no Rolling Stones performance's. A lot of fun, sex drugs and rock and roll from the rocker of the 50's who created rock and roll.
Chuck Berry, Bill Haley and Little Richard are the only reasons I will watch the DVD again. The other performances are either boring or terrible, tho if your a fan of Jerry Lee Lewis don't go by review on judgment, I've never liked him much anyway, and I pretty much ignored his performance after GBOF.
The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars is because only 3 of the acts I enjoyed, the scene selections only let you select the artists performance in total, not as each song is played, and Chuck Berry didn't do "Johnny B. Goode" :((
The everlasting show.......2000-07-01
As the same line-up is about to perform again in London in July 2000 it was fascinating to see these rock musicians playing 30 years ago. The camera work is very Seventies - handheld, close-up and all rather amateur - but the footage of London Teds jiving and having a good day out more than made up for that. Bo Diddley did a great guitar break, Screaming Lord Sutch was a bit of fun but the main stars were all on top form. Ignoring Jerry Lee's very strange pink sweater he did his customary set and also ignoring Little Richard's camping it up he showed what energy he had in that decade. But as usual Chuck Berry took the honours when closing the show. Good buy.
