Description
Bluegrass Country Soul captures the sights, sounds, and magic of this three-day outdoor festival, the first of its kind, featuring bluegrass veterans and future stars alike sharing the primitive wood and cinder block stage. This documentary does more than just capture on of the largest bluegrass festivals of that decade, it's also an interesting mixture of live performances, interviews, impromptu jam sessions and crowd footage of live music set in a small town surrounded by the now long gone red clay and tobacco shacks of North Carolina.

Region 1 restriction.......2007-03-11
Why is this DVD (and many others only available in the U.S.) restricted to region 1? Does Time Life (and others) want to keep the bluegrass community neat and tiny? Why are people outside the U.S. and Canada not allowed to watch this dvd???
History not entertainment.......2007-02-16
The history provided was o.k., but the clippings were very old and the sound was not up to standard. Way too much of unprofessionl filming and talking about much of nothing. I didn't care for it at all, will sell cheap (very cheap).
Bluegrass Soul.......2007-01-09
The DVD has many of the real pioneers of Bluegrass music performing in their prime, it is a treat to watch, especially for a johnny-come-lately bluegrass fan as I am. There is a sense of something wholesome going on there, not like other musical festivals like Woodstock, where there is a sense of something perverse going on. I love it when rockers come to bluegrass, produce one of something worth listening to and then vanish, because they don't understand the culture of the men who make their living palying music they love. This CD does an excellent job of telling a story and showcasing some truly legendary acts.
All Hail - The King Of Bluegrass DVDs.......2006-12-01
I'm a huge bluegrass DVDs and VHS collector, but I never saw anything like this in my whole collection. This is a serious must-have. If you ever been to a festival in the 70s (wich I haven't) you'll enjoy this DVD much more, it will bring back uncountable memories. It opens with a great footage of the Lilly Brothers & Don Stover with Tex Logan (wich is worth the price alone!) and it keeps going with Mac Wiseman, Earl Scruggs, the Bluegrass Alliance, JD Crowe, Blackwell & Collins and many many many more. It has a great quality, both video and audio, plus there's a great commentary by Fred Bartenstein (who actually was one of the organisers of the festival, when he sold Muleskinner News...). What are you waiting for? Buy it for they might be over soon :)
A must-have for bluegrass lovers.......2006-09-09
This ranks with the all-time best concert movies--"Woodstock," "The Last Waltz," and "Stop Making Sense." The fact that it's a bluegrass film is a plus for fans of the genre.
Almost any chapter of the dvd is worth the entire price, but the Earl Scruggs banjo finale is breathtaking.
A beautiful piece of work, lovingly crafted and a one-of-a-kind experience.

Cindy even discusses Dobro construction and maintenance to give you a full understanding of your instrument.
To help you put all this information together, Cindy teaches four all-time favorite country tunes, each one illustrating a different technique, key or style to prepare you for further Dobro adventures.
Songs: "Wildwood Flower," "Fireball Mail," "Sailor's Hornpipe," "Wayfaring Stranger."
Customer Reviews:
Great help - thanks Cindy Cashdollar.......2007-04-08
This DVD is really a great place to start if you want to learn the dobro. Cindy Cashdollar is an excellent teacher and wonderful player. The songs are familiar and cover a decent range of styles. She demonstrates the material well and the camera work is good, showing both hands. The sections on holding the instrument and bar are really good. She knows we are starting from scratch. If you learn like I do, by watching and hearing rather than reading, you will get a lot from this DVD. The sound is not the greatest when the band is playing along, but this was in the early days of Homespun and the newer releases are much better in that respect. Overall this is a really solid learning tool that is very helpful. Hearing what Cindy can do with simple material by getting into the sound and tone of the dobro is inspirational. Highly reccommended.

I waiting untill I go south on a vacation and check out the Pawn Shops
Beginner Dobro.......2007-01-04
I bought both this dvd and the Jerry Douglas DVD. As a true beginner to the dobro, this dvd did a better job at starting with the basics. It breaks everything down so you can really see and understand what is going on. I would recommend both dvd's but would start with this one first.
Great Beginning Dobro Video........2005-06-13
This lesson is a great guide to all the basics you will need to learn to play the dobro. Begins with tuning (G-B-D-G-B-D) and some basic G scales; with advice on holding the bar properly and what type of finger picks to use. There are strums, slides, rhythmic chops, and a few riffs, as well as hammer-ons and pull-offs. The songs (Wildwood Flower, Sailor's Hornpipe, Fireball Mail, and Wayfaring Stranger) showcase all the techniques you will learn. Video lessons don't get any better than this.
Great for Beginners.......2005-01-14
I purchased my Dobro and this CD at the same time. I couldn't find a teacher, so I decided to try video training. For the cost of two lessons, this video covers more material than a private teacher could cover in those lessons. The camera work is simple but you can definitely see the work of both hands. You can jam with the band on each song. I went through the material fairly quickly. I'm going to buy her other Dobro video.

Description
It's every bluegrass flatpicker's dream to be able to build up speed while maintaining good tone and timing. Now one of America's hottest players gives you the tools you need to get over the musical speed bumps -- without crashing and burning as you go.
It's all a matter of getting your right- and left-hand mechanics working correctly, and Steve has powerful advice and well-thought-out exercises to help you. Using tunes like "Old Joe Clark," "Soldier's Joy" and "Big Mon" as drills, Steve works on your hand and pick coordination and shows how to practice for best results. Tips on left-hand fretting positions (keep a light touch, very little skin on the back of the guitar neck), combined with how to hold and move your picking hand (use a wide swing with proper depth of pick; right hand should act as metronome or pendulum) help solve mechanical failures that often slow you down.
You'll learn how to play syncopated runs and crosspicking patterns with ease, as well as a cross-picked version of "Wildwood Flower" that will amaze your listeners. Steve shows you how triplets and doubletime picking will help build your flatpicking technique and allow you to play blazing bluegrass instrumentals. As Steve puts it, "once you've got the mechanics of your right hand down, it doesn't care what your left hand is doing." Then it's up to you to "oil the machinery" by practicing, burning tunes and licks into muscle memory so you don't have to think about them. Finally, you'll combine all the elements in a show-stopping display of chord runs and picking combinations on the Don Reno classic "Little Rock Getaway." This lesson will help all aspiring flatpickers develop their potential and keep up with others in hot jam sessions and performances.
Customer Reviews:
Good, not Kaufman's best.......2006-12-14
There aren't a whole lot of tunes here, and not that many drills either. It's a good price, but you'll learn just as much with the 4 hour workouts and the Parking Lot Series, and always play slightly faster than your comfort zone.
Faster, faster..........2006-04-12
I have been playing Guitar for quite a while, but mainly just strumming. A few years ago I started practicing scales. I got fairly good at them, but felt like I didn't know what to do with them. I bought this video along with the 4 Hour Bluegrass workout and together these have really helped a lot. I feel that I have a much better command of the fingerboard, in the first position especially. After 1 month of practicing at least 1 hour a day and sometimes more, my speed has definitely picked up and my right hand crosspicking is more accurate.
Both this DVD and the 4 hour workout push you to go faster, usually faster than you feel like you are ready for. But that is the way that Steve helps you build up speed. Even though I thought in the beginning that it would take a long time to build up that kind of speed, I can notice the difference already.
I now find myself wanting to play Guitar more often because of the improvement. There are only a few songs on the DVD, so I would recommend getting the 4 hour workout to go along with the video. That way you have plenty to practice with. Then, practice, practice, practice...

Description
Doc sits down with Steve Kaufman, a top-notch flatpicker in his own right, and shows how he plays some of his most beloved songs and instrumentals. He and Steve trade licks and play duets, and Doc slows his playing down so that you will be able to follow along as you learn to play these fabulous tunes.
Starting with the old gospel song "Open Up Them Pearly Gates," Doc shows how he uses hammer-ons and pull-offs to easily add notes to his accompaniment. He then launches into a crosspicking solo, moving effortlessly up the neck in simple movable positions that create a complex-sounding break. Moving to the classic ballad "Little Sadie," Doc explains how he devises his licks and positions in D minor. On "More Pretty Girls Than One," "New River Train" and "White House Blues" he slows down the flashy runs that punctuate each line of the song. This is one of Doc's signature guitar techniques that has baffled many students of Doc's guitar style. He then carefully breaks down of the solo to each song.
Doc and Steve launch into breathtaking versions of classic fiddle tunes "Salt Creek" and "Ragtime Annie," showing you the lead and back-up, as well as the "twin" harmony parts. (Try these out with a friend.) These show stoppers are also slowed down so you can really see what these two incredible guitarists are playing.
Changing gears, Doc teaches his version of the hauntingly lovely "Goodnight Waltz," as well as his improvisations to the country and jazz tunes, "When It's Peach Pickin' Time in Georgia" and "Sweet Georgia Brown." Finally, as an extra treat, Doc brings on his grandson Richard Watson for a demonstration of three bluesy songs they have been performing together: "Walk On, Boy," "Chicago Blues" and the evergreen "Summertime."
Customer Reviews:
Great to watch Doc play, but he isn't teaching much.......2007-06-04
Doc Watson is a great guitar player, and getting the closeup view of his hands as he plays is instructive and interesting. Great self-taught players who manage to be genuinely innovative, as Doc Watson is, always have some quirks in their technique, and Doc is no exception.
The problem is that Doc doesn't really know how to teach what he does. Like I said, he's self-taught; I don't think he has much frame of reference for how to explain what he does. He plays everything too fast and doesn't focus on dissecting his more intricate runs.
Still, though, you do get the feeling that you're almost sitting right in front of him and watching him play, and that in itself is instructive. You can learn from this DVD, but don't expect to come away from it a flatpicking master.
For beginner/intermediate players.......2007-03-25
It's a good DVD, with a LOT of songs tabbed out. The songs played on this disc have a little bit of everything; runs, cross picking, and good-old fashioned flat picking. Worth the price if you want a breakdown of Doc's playing style and are looking to step up your game. I think this is appropriate for beginner to intermediate skill levels.
If you want to learn to flat pick- this is a must.......2005-10-18
This DVD is the best thing I ever got a hold of. It offers Steve Koffman who is an excellent guitarist and of course the greatest of them all, Doc Watson! The picken will speak for itself. I want to talk about the quality of the DVD. It is great! The lighting, camera position on the guitars is much better then the other DVD. I am still saying the other DVD of Doc is well worth the money.

Description
Here's your chance to learn the basics of bluegrass back-up guitar! Steve Kaufman teaches you how to play solid rhythm, from playing behind the simplest two-chord song to the complex chord progressions needed to accompany Texas-style fiddle tunes.
Steve starts with the fundamentals, showing you how to hold the pick, get good tone, and play the basic bass/chord rhythm patterns solidly and accurately. Then he moves on to important embellishments, such as adding bass walks, playing the famous Lester Flatt "G run," altering your chord shapes to add moving bass lines within a song and other essential techniques. Steve also provides valuable insiders' tips, such as "how to keep up when the going gets fast," and developing "muscle memory" for more accurate chord work.
This lesson in back-up rhythm guitar is illustrated with some classic bluegrass tunes. Playing along with Steve will give you the practice you'll need to use these techniques in other bluegrass songs. You'll soon be playing solid back-ups in jam sessions or any picking situation!
Songs: "Wabash Cannonball," "Blackberry Blossom," "Sally Goodin."
Customer Reviews:
Good Beginning Bluegrass Video.......2005-01-14
The video has good camera work and good sound. The songs covered are basic but it is a beginning video. Steve is a good instructor. The printed materials that come with the video (stuffed in DVD case) are somewhat weak. I had to expand them on a copier so I could read them. The actual notation is just fine. I would recommend this video to a friend.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Flatpicking Role Model.......2005-09-09
Like most of the top guitar pickers (Doc Watson, Tony Rice, Dan Crary, Steve Kaufman),the gifted guitarists are more than willing to share some of those "jaw dropping" licks, runs and signature style. Norman Blake is no exception. His down-home manner of instructional delivery will prevent any fear of being a "grasshopper at the foot of the master." Mr. Blake speaks softly and carries a big Martin. His picking is clean, his arrangements are "doable", plus we are treated to several duets with his wife Nancy. There are some choice tips on duets playing I think most pickers will appreciate.
The beauty of DVD learning for the home guitar student is the ability to isolate a small section in an "A-B" endless loop, allowing the guitar player to concentrate on a passage and play it continuously along with the talented Mr. Blake. It's better than studio guitar lessons in terms of affordability and material retrievability.
I've yet to buy any musical instructional video or DVD on the Homespun Video label that failed to meet my standards. Put your money (or card) down and play along with Norman. There's plenty of great pickin' ahead for the owners of this masterpiece.

Customer Reviews:
The perfect example of how cameramen/women can destroy a great concert!.......2006-07-28
I must write this review. I am so tired and fed-up with poor camera work at concerts. Please take note this review is a critique of the visual and not the audio of this show. Examples: Fiddle solo but camera on Tony Rice looking like he wants to say, "Hello, like ah, I play guitar and there is a fiddle solo going on over there." I don't know about you but, I really do not want to see the side of the Mandolin player while Tony is tearing up a superb solo. There are dozens of examples like the ones I mentioned above. What really gets up my nose is that this gig was filmed at Merlefest and I would think they have enough experience to know better. But, I guess not! To be fair here Tony and fellow Musos are all playing extremely well. I just feel the whole show is ruined by lame camera people.
Tony Rice - Raw.......2004-02-10
Like the other reviewers I was somewhat disappointed that all you get here is footage from the Merle Watson festival in North Carolina in 1992. It's the only DVD footage that I'm aware of with such names as Tony Rice, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, Mark O'Connor, David Grisman, Pete Wernick, Jerry Douglas, and Ricky Skaggs all performing together - a veritable Mt. Rushmore of bluegrass. You really get a sense of being at the festival watching this video, because it's so casual. You see soundmen walking across the stage during a performance. You hear the crowd's responses to the solos. You see cameramen scurrying to get the right shot (sometimes a bit late) when the fiddler starts his solo. Sometimes you wait a few seconds for the volume to come up on the right instrument. Nothing slick about this production. Just a rare glimpse into the world of bluegrass virtuosity. Mark O'Connor's break on Bluegrass Breakdown was incredible. Sam Bush's vocal rendition of White House Blues was a treat. And of course, Tony is his usual brilliant self on his legendary Martin.
The three segments presented here are from the same 1992 festival. The first is the Tony Rice All Star Jam featuring Tony, Sam, Mark, Jerry, Bela, and Mark Schatz on bass for Red Haired Boy, Blue Railroad Train, I Wonder Where You Are Tonight, and White House Blues. The second is Tony and pretty much everybody else except for Sam and Bela in Tony Rice & Friends on The Old Home Place and Bluegrass Breakdown, a classic parking lot type jam session of a tune reminiscent of Foggy Mountain Breakdown. The third is the Tony Rice Unit with Tony, brother Wyatt on acoustic guitar, Rickie and Ronnie Simpkins on fiddle and bass, and Jimmy Gaudreau on mandolin for Dusty Miller, He Rode All The Way To Texas, Salt Creek, Another Lonesome Day, Nine Pound Hammer, Darcy Farrow, Crazy Creek, Little Sadie, and Gordon Lightfoot's Shadows.
Maybe someday somebody will put together a good DVD with excerpts from the best bluegrass festivals across the country over the past 30 years. You know - live performances by The Newgrass Revival, Dan Crary, Tony Trischka, The David Grisman Quintet, Alan Munde, Stuart Duncan ... maybe a few performances of the winners of the various competitions (some of them are as good as the big name artists) or classic parking lot jam sessions. They could even include a little documentary on the history of these artists and festivals. It might take a 2 DVD set to do it justice but I'd love to see it. In the meantime I guess we have to settle for the occassional bones thrown to us by these video companies. This DVD is as good as any for the time being.
Awesome flatpickin' and straight-ahead bluegrass, but..........2003-03-25
Tony Rice is the Man, no question. His fingers are faster than... well, you know. But he's no showman. You have to really be into the music to enjoy this video, because it's 100% playing. Not even one introduction to a song or to anyone on the stage. Fortunately, I am into it, but when I first watched it, I was a little disappointed. So I wanted to warn others. Don't get me wrong -- I really love this video, and I also own "An Intimate Lesson with Tony Rice" and "The Tony Rice Guitar Method." However, I am also a HUGE fan of the other musicians on this recording, namely: Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Mark O'Connor, David Grisman (I first fell in love with "Dawg" music at age 10), Mark Shatz, et al. Maybe I'm being harsh, but I didn't think this video did justice to the tremendous talent on the stage. For example, in the first segment (Tony Rice All Star Jam), you don't even see (let alone hear) Bela Fleck until 3/4 of the way through; and then it's one solo. For a better idea of what these guys can do together, buy Bela's "Bluegrass Sessions, Vol. 2" CD. Also worthy is Jerry Douglas' CD with Russ Barenberg and Edgar Meyer entitled, "Skip, Hop & Wobble." And if you like this kind of music, you can't miss the Chris Thile (20-something mandolin magician) disc entitled "Not All Who Wander Are Lost," which features many of the people who appear on this Tony Rice video. All in all, I'm glad I bought this video, but I still wish it provided a little more.... enthusiasm.
Tony Rice Video Collection A Live Bluegrass Classic.......2001-11-20
Live concert footage of Tony Rice with both the Tony Rice Unit and various other bluegrass stars. Excellent concert video and sound with just enough close up shots of musicians' hands sprinkled in to satisfy bluegrass technique fanatics.
Mostly traditional material. A rare chance to appreciate Tony's famous 1935 Martin D-28 (formerly owned by Clarence White) before its unfortunate damage later that year (1992) in hurricane Andrew.
The sound of this guitar in Tony's capable hands comes through loud and clear. On several songs Tony's brother Wyatt plays a newer Santa Cruz Tony Rice model, and the contrast between the vintage Martin and one of its best modern interpretations is enlightening.
Tony Rice- The best guitar player........ever?.......2001-09-01
For that small niche of people that appreciate the highly under-rated guitar picking of Tony Rice, this DVD is a must own. Picture this, Tony Rice, Sam Bush, Mark O'Connor, Bela Fleck and Jerry Douglas all jamming on one stage....Wow! The leads are all quick and complicated, taking bluegrass to new heights. I was pleased to find out this footage was recorded in 1992, before Tony lost his voice. Tony's voice sounds great on classics such as "Blue Railroad Train" and "Nine Pound Hammer."
A few small matters: Don't let the title of this DVD fool you, Tony has never made a "video," Each piece of footage is from a 1992 bluegrass festival filmed by the local PBS outfit. The result is seeing Tony in his prime and where he is at his best.. a live performance.
The sound quality seems like it was a live mix, meaning there are times when the guitar could go up, the bass could go down, etc.(Even a few instances of feedback) Just remember, It's live!! This DVD is extremely enjoyable, especially for those guitar players out there who have always wanted close ups of what Tony is doing. Yes, you may come out of this DVD with a few riffs, I did. Tony's #1 fan,
David

The Art of Bluegrass Rhythm Guitar.......2004-05-13
Chris Jones does a great job of demonstrating proper rhythm guitar technique. In addition to rhythm, he gives examples of bass runs which are executed slowly at first, then at tempo, making them easily learned by most beginners. Overall, the material is well done, great lighting, closeups, etc. This coupled with Chris'articulate presentational skills makes for an enjoyable and informative instructional session. My only criticism, more left hand shots showing the chord forms that accompany the strumming patterns.
Chris Jones deserves a hardy round of applause for producing this fine instructional dvd.
