Description
Long before The American Astronaut premiered at Sundance, writer/director/star Cory McAbee created three short films. As with the award-winning feature film, these shorts present an extraordinary vision which is intimately and irrevocably connected to McAbee's band The Billy Nayer Show. This DVD celebrates the band's earliest achievements, marking over a decade of independence in both film and music.

4 out of 5 stars How to describe this. Hmmmm........2005-10-22

The first short, "Billy Nayer," is everyone's favorite, mostly because it's short. The colors are bright, the song is crazy and fun, and you can sing it for your friends. Go to the band's Website and buy the original painted panels!

The next short, "Man on the Moon," is in pixellated black and white, with odd silent-film-style comment cards between scenes. There are gross-out moments. The song "It Must be Santa" is another you can sing to your friends, or better yet, to your friends' kids, who will be greatly impressed and will talk about it the rest of their lives.

The longest, "The Ketchup & Mustard Man," is, in my opinion, creepy. (I prefer the soundtrack CD, also available through Amazon sellers: the soundtrack is great stuff for radio-style listening on the road or for a popcorn & fireplace evening.) The Twilight Zone living room and the bizarre monster remind me of chiller films I never could watch without nightmares. The songs and stories are fun. Just try NOT to like the story of Fickey, the story of the little princess and her sister Mary, the Chicken Story, the Astronaut Story, the song "Love." Just try.

The DVD also contains a couple of recordings no longer available anywhere else; a couple of short videos showing frontman Cory McAbee live in action; a gallery of Mr. McAbee's hand-printed cards he made in his little fleabag apartment when he worked as a club bouncer.

I recommend this DVD to people who like performance art, independent movies, alternative music, and odd, slightly sinister senses of humor. This DVD will not appeal to most people. It will not hurt to have a look, however.
