Tasty and nutrition-free as a snow cone on a hot summer day, Wet Hot American Summer is a silly, hilarious throwback to those mildly smutty early-'80s teen comedies. It takes place on the last day of Camp Firewood's 1981 season, and it's everyone's last chance for romance, self-realization, and of course the Big Talent show. The movie is filled with brilliant comic performances; it looks like the cast just took over a summer camp and had a great time. Writers Michael Showalter and David Wain have captured the essence of parody: absolutely nailing the conventions of their subject, kidding the hell out of it, and all the while showing a real fondness for the genre. People unfamiliar with Meatballs and its many imitators may well be left cold by Wet Hot American Summer, but anyone born between 1965 and 1980 will love it. --Ali Davis

The best!.......2007-05-12
`David Wain is an unbelieveable writer and director! He has an amazing sense of what is funny in a bizarre and goofy way. This is a must see for everyone!
College Hit Movie.......2007-04-28
Defiantly a movie for college kids! There is no denying the fact that this is a totally college based movie with humor related. It is a comedy based on a summer camp with a great deal of humor and jokes in it. Very low budge and a movie that has the potential to become a cult classic, at least among the college generation.
A Fairly Good Parody that Loses Sight in the Second Half.......2007-03-12
Hollywood likes to pretend the early 1980s -- when tight clothes, natural hair, and a laid back attitude were more common than throughout the rest of that narcissistic, self-indulgent decade -- never really existed. "Wet, Hot Summer" wants to remind us of the more interesting half of Reagan's era, parodying two genres, the raunchy teen comedy and the summer camp movie.
In both cases, the film mostly works, managing to both evoke the look and feel of those films while also offering a nostalgic peek into the time period. This is one of the few films about the 1980s that actually gets the hair and clothing styles right, as well as the attitudes of teens and preteens. As breezy as the films it parodies, "Wet, Hot Summer" relies less on a rigid plot and more on a series of episodes featuring a slew of characters who hook up, break up, and repeat the pattern as necessary, all to a soundtrack that includes Rick Springfield, Foreigner, and Loverboy. Indeed, scenes often play out more like "Mad" magazine parodies, right down to funny non-sequiturs and layers of jokes that make for repeat viewings.
The best storylines concern the awkward romance between the camp director (Jeaneane Garofalo) and a timid astronomer (David Hyde Pierce), though the ongoing soap opera involving a beefy jerk (Paul Rudd), his shallow admirer (Marguerite Moreau), and the sensitive goof who loves her (Michael Showalter) gets credit for being brutally honest. The rest of the cast is mostly unknowns or sketch comedy vets, like the kooky but cute Amy Poehler and the kooky but unnerving Molly Shannon, but Christopher Meloni (who could play Bert if they ever film a version of "Sesame Street's" Bert and Ernie) gets to pull an Ed O'Neill as the unstable Viet Nam vet stereotype.
The first half of the film stays more or less grounded (in fact, the opening credit sequence and first 15 minutes could have been lifted from an actual early 80s film); the second half takes the humor and story to far more exaggerated levels, involving, among other things, telekinesis and Skylab. Those of us who came through the decade will probably feel nostalgic, while younger generations will no doubt chuckle at the silliness of it all, if they aren't simply rolling their eyes. The ironic thing is that in making a spoof, director David Wain managed to capture many of the low-budget delights that made those films watchable, right down to the tight camera angles and the schmaltzy center. If it worked on you back then, it'll probably work on you now, too.
One of the top 10 funniest movies of all time.......2007-01-09
When I first saw this movie, flipping around the TV, I wasn't expecting much so it really took me by surprise! 80's summer camp has terrific potential as a setting for hilarious off-the-wall comedy, and it does not disappoint. Many of the scenes are so funny you do not want them to end. The characters are extremely likable and you want their laid back, goofy mood to rub off on you. I cannot count the number of times I laughed out loud. My only criticisms are that it is set on the last day of camp which leaves you feeling like the fun is always about to end. The other is that occasionally the suggestion that there is a plot gets in the way. Comedies are much funnier when you're not distracted by worrisome complications. Hilarious choice of songs - I will never listen to Foreigner, Loverboy and Rick Springfield the same way again.
Great Movie.......2006-11-10
This is one of the funniest movies I have seen in a while. While I can see some people not being drawn to the absurdist humor that makes up this movie, for the fans of shows like Stella or shows like Tom Goes to the Mayor or 12 Oz. Mouse on Adult Swim, this movie is an instant cult classic. Definitely check this one out.

Paul Newman has his glorious youthful swagger in this southern-fried melodrama, which marked his first picture with Joanne Woodward (they married after shooting ended). The script is a melange of William Faulkner stories, although it appears more under the influence of Tennessee Williams and Picnic than the Nobel Prize winner. Drifter Newman catches the eye of schoolmarm Woodward and her father, a rural Mississippi bigshot (Orson Welles). This is not one of Welles's better moments; he appears to be conducting make-up experiments. There is some enjoyable flapdoodle along the way, in the Freud-meets-Gone with the Wind manner of '50s southern cooking, but the ending is embarrassingly compromised. The same production team would leave out the box-office concessions a few years later on Hud. A studly Newman justifies this description of his character: "I wish I was Ben Quick. He's got the whole state of Mississippi to graze on." --Robert Horton
Description
Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Orson Welles, Anthony Franciosa, Lee Remick and Angela Lansbury co-star in this riveting tale of life in the Deep South. Provocative and compelling, it simmers with sexual tension, bawdy humor and a powerful clash of personalities. When Ben Quick (Newman), a suspected barnburner drifts into town, he catches the eye of Will Varner, a tyrannical, intimidating patriarch (Welles) who decides Quick is the ideal husband for his spinsterish daughter (Woodward). But once the loner moves in, the two men lock horns, drawing Varner's family into a complex web of emotions and actions that leaves all of them changed forever.
Customer Reviews:
"Summertime, and the livin' is easy" Or The Long, Hot Summer with Young Hot Paul Newman.......2007-05-25
It was the time when they called him a young new star and it was his breakthrough to stardom, fame, and success. The moment Paul Newman's Ben Quick, rebellious and irresistible drifter enters a rural Mississippi town of Frenchman's Bend to stir up its women, puzzle its men and to catch the interest of Big Daddy Varner (Orson Welles, the ferocious force of nature seemed to have fun playing Will Varner and experimenting with make-up) the town richest and most powerful redneck who perhaps sees in Ben a lot of himself, the screen legend was born.
"The Long, Hot Summer" (1958) is based on five short stories and a novel by one of the America's greatest novelists and storytellers, the expert of Southern life, William Faulkner, and the film is a steamy, moving, often funny (perhaps, unintentionally) tale of lust, greed, jealousy, and larger than life personalities and their clashes. I guess I need to read more Faulkner's stories because I was surprised to see the film that is based on the works of the writer known for his heavy use of such sophisticated literary techniques as symbolism, allegory, and especially stream of consciousness, the film which linear narrative is easy to follow from the third person point-of-view.
Besides Paul Newman who was as talented as he was hot, his off- screen wife-to-be Joanna Woodward shines as Clara Varner, Will's intelligent, thinking daughter, the teacher in a local school whom her father wants to see married (and not just wants but takes certain steps that Clara does not like and feels offended by). The film was the first of many Newman's and Woodward's collaboration and it is not easy to recall the greater chemistry between two leads. Orson Welles dominates the screen in his every scene as expected. 21-years-old Lee Remick (Eula, Varner's daughter-in-law, sexy and innocent woman-child), Anthony Franciosa (Jody, Varner's overlooked and jealous son), and Angela Lansbury (Minnie, the woman who has her own plans about future that include a widower Varner in them) all add to the sizzling fun that "The Long Hot Summer" is.
The Long Hot Summer.......2007-05-14
The original version with Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward and Orson Wells is one exceptional movie. Made in 1955-57 it is still just as rewarding to watch as it was then. A great love story and a dysfunction family that actually does have alot of love for each other. I can watch it over and over. Glad to see it in DVD format.
You can't miss with this one ........2007-03-19
This is an excellent movie . Brought me back to a time when I was young and reckless . You certainly did a marvelous job putting it on a DVD .
Thanks to the people who made it happen and Amazon for their professionalism .
Newman and Woodward - what else can you ask for?.......2007-03-09
TERRIFIC movie - Newman and Woodward sizzled. My husband and I watch this and we both think it's one of the best romantic yet gritty movies ever made. Each character/actor is a gem and the story is timeless. The only one I might like more is Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor. Same genre - great performances, great scripts, family realities.
Funny and Sexy.......2007-01-20
Great movie with witty dialogue and wonderful performances. Having read quite a bit of Faulkner in my college days, the script seems to have combined the first in the Snopes Trilogy - "The Hamlet" - with some Faulkner short stories. The script is good, but I don't recall Faulkner being much for happy endings.

Too much fun!.......2007-02-12
I had the pleasure of watching this with my eight year old who was completely befuddled by the simplistic plot, but did notice all the stiff dance moves, odd camera angles, and wide-eyed acting. A fun romp into the minds of sheltered Germany and their idea of a teen vacation romp. Fun to watch for kitsch and dang entertaining!
Strange and interesting.......2005-09-07
Who would have thought a beach party movie from the Red Menace of East Germany would be more wholesome than any of the American competition? A big group of young men and a big group of young women bump into each other while hitchhiking to the Baltic coast for summer vacation, and play increasingly juvenile pranks on one another. They sing songs ("Heisse Sommer" will burn its way into your brain whether you speak German or not), dance with awful awkwardness to choreography that is based almost entirely on marching, and maintain solemn chastity while building socialism. At the end, the movie just kind of peters out. It's still a fascinating glimpse into Soviet-era Eastern Europe.
In one of the bonus materials, a short essay explains that this movie was really popular among the youth when it was released, and the kids would go see this repeatedly. I guess there really wasn't much to do in communist-era East Germany.
My favorite East German musical!.......2005-03-07
This movie is great! Obviously inspired by American beach movies of the sixties, I think it out-performs them. I don't care much for the ending, but I guess in the end the two who are still together kinda deserve each other.
Loved the music!
One Of A Kind -- Great Fun.......2005-01-07
Maybe you've seen "Beach Party," or "Beach Blanket Bingo," but I'll bet you've never seen an East German beach party musical -so welcome to Heisser Sommer! DEFA (the East German Communist government-controlled film company) did not make many musicals. Indeed, given the chronic shortages in East Germany (often filmmaking would have to stop when the electricity went off), and the limited ability of filmmakers, actors and the like to interact with their western counterparts, it is remarkable that this film is as good as it is. It is easily as good as any American movie of this genre, and you'll find yourself humming the tunes long after the movie is over.
The plot is simplistic: a group of ten teenage boys and a separate group of eleven teenage girls make their way to the Baltic Sea for a vacation. After they arrive, each group engages collectively in sophomoric hi-jinks (e.g., the boys hide the girls' clothes while the girls are swimming; the girls send the boys to a barn "guarded" by a St. Bernard) and one girl plays two boys off against each other. While the dancing, by Western standards, is a bit amateurish, the songs are catchy, the singing is good and the film is fast-paced and energetic.
When watching the movie, though, you will never forget that it's in East Germany. For openers, the female lead does not look like a typical 1960s-era American leading lady. The movie offers a rare glimpse of 1960s East Germany (Leipzig, in the opening; East Berlin, in a dream sequence.) Some of the translations, while accurate, are unintentionally funny. As others have mentioned, communist mores, while incidental to the plot, occasionally come through. Example: when one guy wants to leave early, he is told that "only cowards leave." This echoes the view held by the East German government that those who went West were cowards, who did not want to participate in building the "workers' paradise." The movie makes it appear as if groups of kids could take off for vacations almost on a whim -- as the commentary on the film explains, vacations in East Germany involved a lot of advance planning.
The movie is a lot of fun. If you enjoy it, you'll also like "East Side Story," which is a tongue-in-cheek history of musicals made behind the Iron Curtain.
This movie is so damned weird and wonderful.......2004-11-20
OK, it's a musical, and musicals require a certain suspension of disbelief, and it's German, which, well, it's German damnit, the Germans are good at operas but not at musicals, which, although they fall under the rubric "musical theatre" are entirely different beasts, and then when your brain is getting wrapped around this you realize that it was made in East Germany you and totally wig out. The weirdness just increases every time you see Chris Doerk speak or sing, she's cute, but she has this weird creepy intensity that probably went over really, really well in East Germany. You can learn valuable truths about human nature from this movie, such as how East German women treated their men ("treat them mean, keep them keen"), and dig those East German fashions!. As you watch this movie every musical number just gets better and better, you just keep wondering "how can they top the last". And of course there are the situations, which are so stupid as to boggle the mind. For one prank the boys decide to frighten all of the girls by putting a mouse in their collective hotel room (man thiis movie is huge on collectivism, no one does anything by themselves in this movie, whether or not this is deliberately subtextual I don't know, but it smacks you upside the head like a Stasi nightstick*) while the girls get back at the boys by luring them into a barn guarded by a Saint Bernard (I'm not making this up, and watching these candy-assed East Germans nancy-jungen get cornered by a friggin Saint Bernard makes you wonder why we ever worried about these pussies coming through the Fulda Gap).
Then there's the weirdness of German pop song titles the song "Everything that we do, we do only for you" translates as "Alles was wir tun das tun wir nur fur euch", which just doesn't work as well as the English title (you can see this with the Christmas Carol "Silent Night", which was originally written in German and titled "Stille Nacht".). The songs, and the German romantic endearments such as "Kuss Mich mal" really hammer home the point that German is not the language of love.
As for the "dance" numbers, well, I'd have to say that there's nothing like German communism to crush whatever vestigial sense of rhythm possessed by white folks. And that dancing haystack number, wow! Watching this movie leaves you with certain questions: "Would this film have been any different if it had been made by a Nazi regime that won World War II"?, "Aren't we lucky that the Beatles got the Hell out of Hamburg and stopped singing in German?", "Was East German pornography into orgies and group sex as an expression of collectivism?" (Well maybe you won't wonder about that last one, but I sure do!).

Description
Preacherman - When we meet Amos Huxley he has conned churchgoers out of their collection money, and the sheriff's daughter out of her sexual innocence. When caught "in the act" by the sheriff himself, he is hauled off and thrown out of town, setting him loose upon another innocent town. "Empty your pockets of the devil's money and be saved" or so says Amos.to his congregation after convincing a poor bootlegger to open a church on the property where his still is. This classic sex comedy is sure to remind you of Monty Python by way of the Mason-Dixon. -
Hot Summer in Barefoot Country- A country hick turned law-man from the capital goes undercover in Hicksville to bust an undercover bootleggin' operation, run by a tough-talkin' mama and her halter-topped kinfolk. Distracted from his duties as a man of the law, he falls for one of Mama's three daughters and rediscovers his country roots. But what will happen when the local townsfolk and his lady's sisters make a bust of their own? What is a man to do?! Screw the girl and forget your job or screw the girl over and forget the screw?-
Ellie - Hollywood legend Shelly Winters (The Poseidon Adventure, Delta Force) stars in this film set in the backwoods of the deep south. Young, beautiful Ellie has just witnessed the murder of her father at the hands of her evil step-mother Cora and Cora's three lecherous sons, all hoping to get their hand's on Ellie's father's money. Vowing to avenge her father's death, Ellie plots to do in the murderers using the only weapon she has: her body. Tipping it's hat to such cinema classics as Deliverance, I Spit on Your Grave, and Troma's Lust for Freedom, Ellie tells a distilled tale of rustic revenge and country fried justice!

--Ali Davis
