When Barbra Streisand played Fanny Brice in Funny Girl, she brought to life a sympathetic yet strong-headed performer of stage and radio. In the sequel, Funny Lady, Brice comes off as a harsher woman, slightly bitchy, without the tremendous charm she possessed in the first film. Herbert Ross takes over as director (William Wyler oversaw Funny Girl), and the film just seems to get away from him. This sequel picks up during the Great Depression, when even the great star Fanny Brice is suffering. Along comes Billy Rose (James Caan), a small-time hustler who's out to make it big in show biz. The two pair up, both professionally and romantically, although things are uncertain when her first husband, Nick Arnstein (Omar Sharif), reappears on the scene. Much to the movie's detriment, Funny Lady concentrates more on Brice's professional life than on her personal life, as the first film does. The songs are elaborately staged numbers that Brice performs in the theaters, and while they are visually lush and spectacular, they lack conviction. Caan is solid in his role as the bumbling producer, but overall, the film is a disappointment. If you want more Barbra and Brice, rewatch Funny Girl. --Jenny Brown

I mean, who are you that you do not know this movie? It is an absolute MUST-SEE! Live it, love it, learn it! Barbara Streisand embodies the awkward post-pubescent in us all. I highly recommend seeing this movie in a local theatre whenever possible. Good times.

Funny Lady: Original Soundtrack Recording

A better CD than a movie. Nearly all of the songs are terrific and beautifully orchestrated. Woth the price just for Bab's version of "Great Day." James Caan really has a very pleasant voice that works well with Babara's on a few duets. A very relaxing score worth owning. It's one you won't tire of even 30 years after its original release.

The movie cover was falling apart, not just worn.
I thought the movie was awful, but that's OBVIOUSLY not the fault of the seller! Funny Girl is one of my all time favorites and I play the CD in may car. I was so disappointed in Funny Lady. They should have left well enough alone.

2 out of 5 stars A lot of missed moments...still, there's Streisand.......2007-04-08

What seems to have evaded the minds behind the redo of the Funny Lady soundtrack is that soundtrack albums (or, in this day and age, CD's) should not be intended as aural replicas of the movie from which they are made. This is especially true in this era of home video, where movies are readily available, and no one need wait for a theatrical reissue or a rare TV showing. Want to watch the first half of Funny Lady? Just pop in the DVD and have at it! Rather just listen to the songs while driving to work or cleaning the oven? Well, you could always listen to the new remastered CD...or could you?

This is not a failing of the Funny Lady CD alone; it seems to be a problem with soundtrack albums in general. For some reason, the producers of these CD's don't seem happy unless their work is a near carbon copy of the film experience -- just without the visuals. Even previously wonderful soundtrack albums (The Sound of Music and The King and I are notable examples) have undergone facelifts to make them more like the movie -- be it re-arranging the songs to match the order they appear on the movie, or including alternate cuts, takes, underscoring, or other material that never should have been on the album to begin with. (Maybe that's why it wasn't...hint, hint.)

The original Capitol release of The King and I was a wonderful album. It included a stunning instrumental overture written directly for the vinyl (never in the movie), and several songs cut from the movie (most before filming commenced), but recorded to give a sense of completeness to the score. Granted, it was not a true representation of the movie soundtrack. But it is a wonderful example of the art of soundtrack albums at their best.

The producers of some of the greatest Broadway cast recordings had the right idea: alter the material enough to make it listenable. Musical theater and music recording are two distinct artforms, and trying to make one resemble the other only succeeds in diminishing both. That is precisely why some legendary Broadway cast albums (such as My Fair Lady, Mame, Fiddler on the Roof, and 1776) took liberties with the score -- altering instrumental lead-in, changing tempo, or re-arranging songs to effect a more pleasing listening experience. True, some changes were based on the time constraints placed by the vinyl format, but most were aimed at creating a cohesive, enjoyable album that stood on its own from the show upon which it was based.

OK. Back to Funny Lady. If the producers behind this revamp were trying to make the CD more closely match the film, then why the missed opportunities? Where is the lovely opening credit music? It certainly would have opened the album better than Blind Date, which can make many listeners reach for the EJECT button within seconds. Or the reprise of Let's Hear It For Me, played over the montage that closes the film? What's with that horrendous remix of It's Gonna Be A Great Day? That's not the way it appeared in the film. What a botch! And whose bright idea was it to include that "single" version of How Lucky Can You Get? A simple stereo reprise of the song's first part (the portion that appears as a scratchy 78 recording in the movie) would have been a nice touch, and would have more closely matched the film's closing credit sequence.

Technically, the CD is fine -- sound quality is excellent (for the most part), and of course, Streisand's vocals were at their prime. No complaints there. But one must wonder what the producers of this redo were trying to achieve -- a CD replica of the movie, or a consistently enjoyable album. The brains behind this mishmash should have decided before beginning, and stuck to their guns. It certainly would have improved what we were presented with in this Funny Lady soundtrack reissue.
