When you hear Peter Huttlinger on recordings or in concert it's no mystery why he won the National Fingerpicking Competition in Winfield, Kansas, or why he is quickly becoming a powerful force in the acoustic guitar world. Pete's picking is clean, soulful and, at times, blazingly fast. Whether he's playing his arrangement of a classic pop tune or one of his own compositions, listeners are inevitably startled by what they hear.

Pete starts with the lyrical Lennon/McCartney tune "And I Love Her," played on a nylon string guitar. This richly textured but relatively easy piece will get you set up for the challenges that follow.

Next, Pete takes the classic Steely Dan song "Josie" and builds up a powerful rendition complete with moving bass parts, jazz chord formations and a funky groove that doesn't quit. Then it's on to "Brown Bomber," Pete's fingerpicking tour de force that will give you an incredible workout while you learn cascading runs across the entire range of the fingerboard.

Switching to a flatpick and DADGAD tuning, Pete teaches "Catch and Release," the title tune to one of his popular CDs and one that is rich in a variety of ear-catching guitar sounds.

Pete starts out by teaching his Merle Travis-inspired chord/melody arrangement of the great Gershwin tune I Got Rhythm. His exciting version features lightning-fast fingerpicking and a total left hand workout.

Things calm down a bit as you learn Pete's somewhat easier "Chet-style" fingerpicking tune Darcy's Guitar. Then you're off and running again, this time with an in-depth teaching of Pete's most requested tune, the showstopper, The Santa Rita Connection.

McGuire's Landing in DADGAD brings us back to a mellow Celtic mood. Tommy in the Morning, written by Pete for fellow fingerpicker Tommy Emmanuel, and the lovely hymn On Eagles' Wings, played in James Taylor's evocative style, round out this terrific DVD lesson.

Huttlinger: The Master.......2007-01-09

If you are looking to see and hear one of the world's great guitar players up close, this is a good place to start. Huttlinger is one of those rare players whose incredible technique doesn't compromise the beauty and emotion of his music. Too often players with that much technique lose the plot but he uses his skill set to turn the guitar into a mini orchestra. He is also a fun character and even more fun in person.

I would say this DVD is good for anyone who loves guitar but it will be very useful for players who are at least at the intermediate level. The real payoff will be for more advanced players who will find a tresure chest of great ideas for making great music.

It's a thrill to listen to Pete Huttlinger, and even more so when you can watch him play, which is why I love the DVD versions. One of the best guitarists you will ever hear!
This disk is aimed at finger-style guitarists or wannabees like me, but anyone who loves guitar music won't be disappointed either.

Solo Accoustic Guitar - Peter Huttliger DVD #1.......2006-11-06

DVD had some good tunes on it. I preferred the songs presented in the 2nd DVD by Peter Huttlinger in this series, due to the fact that it seemed to have a few more songs at the intermediate level of play. The instruction on this DVD was clear, organized and to the point. The written music notation and tablature was written in an easy to read manner. The paper music score provided with the DVD contained several songs and was small enough to easily fit into a guitar case. This DVD has songs that would be playable by advanced players and one or two songs that would be playable by an intermediate level player.
