Product Description
Labor and management at the Sleeptite Pajama Factory aren't getting much sleep lately: a proposed 7-1/2-cent hourly wage increase is the reason and a job action just may be the result. But not to worry: negotiating strategies here involve snappy stars, terrific tunes and dynamic dances, all part of one of the most infectiously joyful stage/screen musicals ever.

Doris Day and a Broadway-seasoned supporting cast play The Pajama Game, the lighthearted, nimble-footed movie that whips the unlikely musical-comedy subject of a labor/management dispute into a buoyant, romantic delight. Day is Babe Williams, head of the employees' grievance committee, who strikes sparks with shop superintendent Sid Sorokin (John Raitt in his only opportunity to play on of his stage triumph on film). And where there are spark, "Steam Heat" results.

For the songs by Damn Yankees duo Richard Adler and Jerry Ross and the choreography by Bob Fosse (Cabaret, Sweet Charity) are too combustible to pass up, all under the direction of two musical masters of stage and screen, George Abbott and Stanley Donen. Besides "Steam Heat" (showcasing the quirky brilliance of dancer Carol Haney), catch "Hey There," "I'm Not at All in Love," "Hernando's Hideaway," "Small Talk," "Once-a-Year Day," "There Once Was a Man" and other all-time greats.

This 1957 version of the Tony-winning Pajama Game is one of the finest film adaptations of a hit Broadway musical. The story is simple enough: Babe Williams, the head of a pajama company's grievance committee, falls for an exec--the new superintendent--Sid Sorokin (John Raitt). Doris Day, as Babe, has never been so efficiently cute. Raitt starred in the Broadway version, as did much of the film's cast (Day replaced original stage star Janis Paige). The Pajama Game is filled with recognizable, classic songs, done so well and danced so athletically that this musical can engage an action-film fan. Bob Fosse's trademark choreography shines.

Check out two numbers danced by the late, underused, and underrated Carol Haney, who performs amazing feats for "Steam Heat" and "Hernando's Hideaway." Both Day and Raitt deliver lovely renditions of "Hey There." They're also supported by a great cast that includes, in addition to Haney, a slyly coy Reta Shaw and a dynamic Eddie Foy Jr. --N.F. 5 out of 5 stars The Pajama Game.......2007-06-27

This Technicolor smash hit began life on Broadway but made a lively, beautiful transition to film in 1957. Funny, intelligent, and stuffed frame to frame with a jumping songbook and ebullient choreography by the one and only Bob Fosse, "Game" features Day in one of her cheekiest, most adorable screen roles. Adler/Ross tunes like "Hernando's Hideaway," "There Once Was a Man," and the show-stopping "Steam Heat," featuring the remarkable Carol Haney, add punch. If all workers' movements looked like this, we'd have a revolution on our hands!

5 out of 5 stars Great Musical.......2007-05-07

This DVD is on a single layer double sided disc with wide screen version on one side and normal veersion on the other. I saw for the first time a disc of this type. It makes a little difficult to find the correct side but the reproduction is good. The audio video are very good. I enjoyed very much all the songs except the two versions of "Hey there" which wre not bad though. This is a great DVD to have in one's collection

5 out of 5 stars "Tunes Of Glory".......2007-03-25

This film is an excellent example of HOW to adapt a Broadway show to the screen. First of all, it's lean and mean, clocking in at little more than 90 minutes. At the same time, all the principal musical numbers have been kept, and all save one of the key members of the stage cast, whatever their limitations in physical beauty, have been retained. Still, the movie is anything but a filmed stage play. Instead, it's been freshly re-imagined as a movie. This means, most importantly, that the camera moves a lot, and the visual becomes a co-partner with the verbal and musical. The most telling example of this is the "Once A Year Day" sequence, filmed in an actual park, and requiring fresh Fosse choreography, given the expanded possibilities available when performing in a natural setting.

The new cast member, adding star power, is Doris Day, but she's been adroitly chosen, having singing and acting credentials matching her Broadway predecessor's. Hollywood, unfortunately, doesn't always exercise such care in recasting.

All in all, this is a wonderful film, capturing the Broadway musical at its tuneful peak, just before the start of the deadly reign of the sometimes witty, but largely unmelodic, Sondheim.

Description

The Doris Day Collection features six new-to-DVD titles -- Young Man With a Horn, Lullaby of Broadway, Love Me or Leave Me, Billy Rose's "Jumbo", Please Don't Eat the Daisies, The Glass Bottom Boat -- along with two of Ms. Day's all-time favorite musicals, Calamity Jane and Pajama Game which have been repackaged for the Collection. All DVDs are packed with bonus features including vintage shorts and featurettes, cartoons, trailers and more.

Young Man with a Horn (1950)
With a second-hand trumpet and the loving guidance of a brilliant bluesman, a lonely boy grows into manhood as a superb musician whose talent carries him from honky-tonks to posh supper clubs. But his desperate search for the elusive high note, trapped in his mind but impossible to play, starts him on a boozy downward slide. Charged with dynamic performances by Kirk Douglas (the title role), Doris Day, Lauren Bacall and Hoagy Carmichael and pitch-perfect direction by Michael Curtiz, the film is a feast of hot, cool, moody jazz. Legendary Harry James dubbed Douglas' horn work.

Lullaby of Broadway (1951)
Day danced divinely and sang in this musical delight about a singer newly arrived in New York and destined for Great White Way fame in the capable company of co-stars Gene Nelson, S.Z. Sakall, Billy DeWolfe, Gladys George and Florence Bates. Highlights are the inclusion of the OscarR -winning title tune, Cole Porter's "Just One of Those Things", "Somebody Loves Me" and six more songs.

Love Me or Leave Me (1955)
Laced with Doris Day's vibrant performances of songs from the era, this 1955 Academy AwardR winner (Best Motion Picture Story) is the tough-minded true tale of Ruth Etting's life with the man who boosted her career with strong-arm tactics yet smothered her in an obsessive grip she escaped at great peril. As Martin "The Gimp" Snyder, James Cagney earned one of the film's six OscarR nominations. Ms. Day's Etting was a career-best dramatic performance, bringing acclaim from critics and protest letters from fans unprepared for the departure from her traditionally sunny roles. DVD special features include: Soundtrack remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1, Three vintage shorts, the first two with Ruth Etting (A Modern Cinderella, Roseland, A Salute to the Theatres)

Billy Rose's Jumbo (1962)
Radiant Doris Day sings beloved Rodgers and Hart tunes and does her own horseback riding tricks in this razzle-dazzle musical based on Billy Rose's stage spectacular and featuring circus sequences directed by Busby Berkeley. The story revolves around a circus owner (Jimmy Durante, star of the 1935 Broadway original) with only two real attractions: his daughter (Day) and popular pachyderm Jumbo. Three-ring pandemonium breaks out when a handsome rival (Stephen Boyd) infiltrates the circus, and father, daughter and Dad's wisecracking fiancie (Martha Raye) are suddenly at risk of losing the greatest show on earth. o DVD Special Features include: Soundtrack remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1, Musical short Yours Sincerely, Tom and Jerry cartoon Jerry and Jumbo, Original overture rejoined to the film for the first time in more than 40 years.

Please Don't Eat the Daisies (1962)
o Ms. Day brings her trademark radiance to this jovial comedy from the bestseller by playwright Jean Kerr. With Janis Paige, Spring Byington and Richard Haydn on hand for snappy comic support, Please Don't Eat the Daisies is breezy family fun with popular songs "Please Don't Eat the Daisies" and "Anyway the Wind Blows."

The Glass Bottom Boat (1966)
Doris Day entered her eighth consecutive year as a Top-10 Box-Office Star when she boarded The Glass Bottom Boat, a blending of romantic comedy and the era's burgeoning spy-movie genre. Frank Tashlin directs with a cartoonist's sensibility, embracing everything from spy guises to push-button chaos in a futuristic kitchen. The film also stars top comedians Arthur Godfrey, Paul Lynde, Edward Andrews, John McGiver, Dom DeLuise and Dick Martin. o DVD special features include: Three vintage featurettes (Catalina Island, Every Girl's Dream, NASA), Oscar-winning cartoon The Dot and the Line.

5 out of 5 stars Great Set.......2007-03-23

Doris Day is great. I have always been a fan of hers. The movies in this set give us a good representation of her dramatic and comedic skills as an actress. This set would be a good gift to give to someone who loves the classics and musicals.

4 out of 5 stars A Doris Day Attitude.......2006-11-10

Who doesn't like Doris Day? She's perky and cute and you can't keep from smiling when you watch her movies. We enjoy this collection, although some of the shows are better than others. A great keepsake for fans!

5 out of 5 stars Great Tribute to A Great Star: Doris Day.......2006-08-20

If you are too young to have sat in one of those grand movie palaces and watched Doris Day grace the screen, you don't know what you missed. She lit up the screen and made millions fall in love with her.

I loved the extras for "Love Me or Leave Me" with Doris and James Cagney on the set waiting for the director to call "action!" They showed it from the standpoint of the camera and crew in the dark with the lights blazing, ready to shoot.

The inclusion of the song especially written for "The Pajama Game," "The Man Who Invented Love," was a special treat. We, her fans, had heard of the song, but had no idea that they had actually filmed the scene, which was eventually cut and shelved. It had been sitting in the vaults for over 40 years and then some brilliant researcher found it and included it as a DVD extra. Thank you!

Doris has made so many great films, she needs a couple more boxes on the market. Until then, I'll cherish this one. For all of the Day fanatics, it has been a great year with the release of all this Day material. Please, bring us more!

2 out of 5 stars NOT THE GREATEST BOX SET!.......2006-05-02

I'm not a big Doris Day fan, but I thought I give the set a shot. Thought Love Me or Leave Me was excellent, Calamity Jane was very good and even Lullaby of Broadway and Young Man with a Horn weren't bad, but the rest were sickenly sweet. I thought Jumbo and The Pajama Game would NEVER end. Even Jimmy Durante couldn't save Jumbo! And The Glass Bottom Boat wasn't even worthy of the Three Stooges. The good news was I was able to sell 5 of the movies on Amazon, kept three and even made a profit by selling them individually so the box set didn't cost me anything and I made a few bucks on Doris too!

5 out of 5 stars doris day is here.......2006-02-22

after way to long we get the doris day collection and it's great.a nice cross section of her films all looking great and as good as ever. if you love doris day then this is what you want.

Like musicals from the 50's then this is a great one to watch. This is a cute movie. Probably suited for the older crowd that really like musicals.

I remember watching this movie as a child and I must tell you it brought a smile to my face and a tap to my foot watching it as an adult. I did not realize how many of the songs I recognized. It was a trip down memory lane for me - and I totally enjoyed it!

--N.F. Mendoza
