Well, bless my beautiful hide! Director Stanley Donen invests this rollicking musical with a hearty exuberance. Howard Keel, with his big-as-all-outdoors baritone, stars as a bold "mountain man" living in the Oregon woods who brings home a bride (plucky songbird soprano Jane Powell) to his six slovenly brothers. Taming the rambunctious brood, Jane proceeds to make gentlemen of them so they can woo sweethearts of their own. But old habits die hard: their flirting gives way to fighting in the film's celebrated barn-raising scene, a lively acrobatic dance number exuberantly choreographed by Michael Kidd. Big brother chimes in with his own brand of advice--an old-fashioned kidnapping! Donen manages to get away with such a politically incorrect plot by investing the boys with a innocent sweetness, most notably the youngest brother played with genial earnestness by Rusty (Russ) Tamblyn (pre-West Side Story). A Great Musical!.......2007-05-10

To start with this set of 2 DVDs came in an excellent case making for good storage. While the Cinemascope version on disc one is most enjoyable with top class reproduction of image as well as sound, the second disc with the alternate widescreen version is nearly as good and it is difficult to see the difference. The Commentary by Derector Donen is most informative and shows how in spite of odds against it the movie was made into a great masterpiece. The Donen Trailer galary gives useful priew of some movies making a purchase decission of these essier. On disc 2 we have "making of the the movie" as also MGM Jubilee Overgture, both of which are worth watching and listening to. Bonus material on both the discs hence are enjoyable. The movie itself has great songs with wonderful music and dances from start to finish, especially that at the barn raising event. The subtle comedy is also very much enjoyable.

Love at first site, single day marriage proposal 2. the first dinner 3. the wedding night 4. clothes washed and clean shaved brothers 5. Ben fighting three men, "why help, there just three small ones" 6. learning to court 7. barn raisen 8. capture of the Sabean women 9. the shot gun wedding.

The music and Russian dance culture was amazing. The mountains in the background put the view in the alps. The energy of this film acting and singing is amazing. A great family treat.

This three-disc set, part of Warner's Essential Classics series, collects three truly classic films--The Music Man, Meet Me in St. Louis, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers--in one inexpensive package. The drawback is you don't get the second disc of either Meet Me in St. Louis or Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, so if you're a featurette junky or if you simply have to see the reshot version of Seven Brides, you'll want to stick with the individual releases. But this set does include the commentary tracks and any other material that was on the first disc of those two-disc sets (The Music Man still has everything that was on the one-disc release), and best of all, they have the great remastered pictures of the previous releases. Great Musicals at a fabulous price!.......2007-05-14

While this set doesn't include all the extra material dvd's at this price it's still well worth it for these great musicals. They are indeed classics as the title states. My favorites would be "Meet Me in St. Loius" and "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers". Not very found of "The Music Man" but the package is still cheaper than what I would pay individually. The movies speak for themselves.

Goin' Co'tin'.......2006-02-20

I saw this film in the movies when it first came out. I watched it recently and found that it is just as fun to watch as the first time. I had forgotten some of the scenes and was pleasantly surprised. You will find your self not humming but actually singing the tunes along with the movie and in the shower. Well even if you don't normally sing in the shower this movie will help you start. And do not go swinging your ax in the house.

The DVD version has background information to enhance your viewing pleasure.

If nothing else this film is a good addition to your library.

Just incase you really haven't seen this film (hard to imagine), Millie (Jane Powell) one of the towns people is courted by Adam (Howard Keel) who is from another world, that of the woods. Both people have different agendas. Millie plans on a place of her own out of the hectic city and maybe a little more exotic with a different sort of man. Adam on the other hand needs a chief cook and bottle washer for himself and his six brothers. At first the surprise is on Millie. Later Adam finds out that he can not handle what he has brought home. The fun begins as Millie and Adam has a different approach to finding wives for the six brothers.

This film has lots of color-coordinated clothes, great dance scenes and appropriate song at just the right places to integrate into a fun story.
