Good stuff to practice.......2007-05-15

When I first put in the DVD I was a little put off by the low-budget production, but the actual content is really pretty good. The very basics are VERY basic, but he moves really quick into good techniques to master. Don't get this to learn lots of songs, but to learn good habits. The rewind, pause and fast-forward are essential with this tape. Although it's only about 1 hour long, there's probably 10-20 hours of good practice work from it. Despite the black curtain background, the DVD is one of the better instructional videos I've bought.

Mostly strums, but worth it for that.......2007-01-10

Ralph Shaw teaches ukulele strums in a thoroughly engaging manner. This is good stuff to know, and it's easily worth the price, considering what you'd pay a tutor. Given time, you might figure it out for yourself, but the time/progress ratio is worth the money. I wouldn't call this course "complete," but these strums and a couple chords can get you started.

I learned some good stuff about steady down-up chung chukka chukka chung etc rhythms that helped me nail down several new songs. Considering movies are $10/two hours, this DVD (and an ukulele) is good return on the entertainment dollar.

The video does a decent job at showing some beginner basics and also includes some more advanced skills. Ralph Shaw is hard to follow because he is quite boring. I think this video lacks some of the essential ingridients to be a stand-alone teach yourself ukulele video. I learned a number of things from this video and it has been helpful.

Awesome DVD.......2007-01-05

Ralph does a great job of teaching the notes and finger placement. Highly recommend this product to those of you looking to learn the Ukulele!

Very good but not great.......2006-12-16

I am a complete novice when it comes to music. The guy is pretty entertaining and I like the video overall. Thumbs down on the Chapter list on the DVD when it comes to tuning your instrument. The tuning chapter allows you to tune your instrument to the video but you have to rewind within the chapter to catch the string plucking. It would be easier if there was a chapter selection that went straight to the string plucking. There is a little guide/pamphlet with the DVD that has some chords, but I was hoping for a little more on chords. Therefore I think the word Complete in the title is stretching it a little.

A man who understands how children learn........2007-05-05

I teach children for a living (in a church) and have learned that fully engaged children learn better. Mr. Shaw here definitely knows that keeping it simple and a little goofy will win the hearts of his audience, and keep them watching and learning. He's like the fifth Wiggle! My son, who is prone to give up easily when challenged, is sticking with the ukulele thanks to this DVD. If you're not doing professional lessons, this is the next-best thing!

great ukulele dvd course.......2007-01-09

my daughter is 7 and she loves this dvd. she got a ukulele for her birthday and wanted to learn to play it. Ralph Shaw is a fun guy to watch and learn from. She has learned to tune her ukulele and play a couple of songs in only a few weeks. This is great for kids.

Excellent learning DVD.......2006-10-17

"Ralph Shaw's "The Complete Ukulele Course for Kids" is a great instructional tool. I myself am a music teacher, so I recognize good instruction. I used Ralph's DVD to teach myself ukulele and then I used it to teach my young students in summer camps. By the end of the camp week they had learned 6 songs and several weeks later we are still using the DVD for more advanced songs! Ralph's presentation is cheerful, encouraging and entertaining as he leads us through each new technique and song. I highly recommend it.".....I.Beck

Excellent beginner's guide!.......2006-04-17

We had bought my nephew a ukulele and he wanted to learn it so he could perform in front of his music class at school. Using this video, he managed to learn how to tune the instrument and play a song within one week. He especially enjoyed the alternative verse to "Row Your Boat". The instructions are fun and easy to follow. I highly recommended this for any child learning to play the ukulele.
