Bob Fosse's sexy cynicism still shines in Chicago, a faithful movie adaptation of the choreographer-director's 1975 Broadway musical. Of course the story, all about merry murderesses and tabloid fame, is set in the Roaring '20s, but Chicago reeks of '70s disenchantment--this isn't just Fosse's material, it's his attitude, too. That's probably why the movie's breathless observations on fleeting fame and fickle public taste already seem dated. However, Renée Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones are beautifully matched as Jazz Age vixens, and Richard Gere gleefully sheds his customary cool to belt out a showstopper. (Yes, they all do their own singing and dancing.) Whatever qualms musical purists may have about director Rob Marshall's cut-cut-cut style, the film's sheer exuberance is intoxicating. Given the scarcity of big-screen musicals in the last 25 years, that's a cause for singing, dancing, cheering. And all that jazz. --Robert Horton

2 out of 5 stars Shallow and Frivolous .......2007-06-28

After many years of wanting to see this film, I finally got a chance to view it. I like musicals and loved Moulin Rouge, so I thought I'd give this one a try. However, after viewing, I was a bit puzzled at all the fuss and acclaim this movie received and continues to receive.

Chicago, while visually stunning and artistically impressive (in that the actors did their own singing), is a shallow, cynical, superficial, and unsympathetic story. Most movies rely upon story and plot for their strength; not so Chicago, whose only redeeming quality is the song and dance they put on.

The main problem with the story is that there are virtually no sympathetic main characters. To take that a step further, the main characters are all frauds, and the story's message is shallow. The two somewhat redeeming characters, Roxie's husband and the woman who is hanged, are both pretty much invisible and discarded in the film. Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly are both in jail for murder, and both have hopes and dreams of making it, being a big star, and having people adore them, so they call upon a slimebag attorney, Billy Flynn, to help them out. Roxie and Velma take turns lying and deceiving each other so they can get the fame in Chicago. Roxie openly admits she cheated on her husband, is oblivious to the fact that he's spent his life savings to get her a lawyer, and uses every trick in the book (including pretending that she has an illegitimate child) to ensure that she is the center of the newspaper headlines. Velma is a conceited fame-hungry snob who bribes the prison ward and only sucks up to Roxie when she realizing she is losing the fame war. From here we have a battle over popularity, as the two think of shenanigans to steal the headlines from each other. Who will win out? Who cares.

The message basically projected in this film is that its legitimate to whatever it takes to get ahead in this world--lie, cheat, steal, commit adultery--and, in fact, it might make you a star!

Are we are suppose to root for two back-stabbing, deceitful, murderesses who walk over people just to get their claim to fame all because they can sing and dance? Or how about a double-crossing, pompous, lying, money-hungry lawyer looking for the next damsel charged with murder? No thanks. I say throw them all in jail.

Watching this film, I found it mystifying how so many people and critics could love this movie so much. Granted the story's plot has probably changed from the musical version on stage, but the movie version falls quite short of its glowing reviews. Moreover, how could this film have received six Oscars in 2002? I liken the Oscar committee of 2002 to the gullible Chicago citizens in the film, falling over and swooning at something that puts on a little song and dance. Maybe Chicago was the Academy Award's apology for Moulin Rouge not getting any Oscars the previous year.

If you want to see a musical that is vastly superior, has heart, style and substance, and better acting, see Moulin Rouge.

5 out of 5 stars Chicago IS jazz hot!.......2007-06-08

One of the best musicals of all time. Rapid paced, great story line, great actors, fantastic scenery... I can't say enough about everything this musical has going for it!!! A definite for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it -- Fantastic Music and Great Cinematography.......2007-05-17

This is one of my very favorite movie musicals. The songs are so great and so much fun!

My favorite part about this movie though, is the way in which it constantly cuts back and forth between simultaneous shots of what the characters are doing in the "movie" version and what they are doing in the "stage" version of the story. It is this symmetrical blending of the two arts that really appeals to me, and the cinematography is very well done.

Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger, Richard Gere, John C. Reilly, and Queen Latifah all put on award-winning performances. I was especially impressed with Gere's and Reilly's performances. (Lucy Liu's small part was nice simply because she is so gorgeous, LOL, but she really is only a brief side character.)

This is the best and most enjoyable stage-musical-to-movie adaptation that I have yet seen, and I highly recommend it. Is it the best movie-musical ever? Probably not, I'd have to vote for The Sound Of Music, but even so, I find myself watching Chicago more often than TSOM. And Moulin Rouge is even funnier than Chicago, but I still love Chicago's songs the best.

5 out of 5 stars Great Musical!.......2007-04-10

This is the musical for people who hate musicals! My kids and I all belt out the words when the songs come--each song is so unique and original. This really is an incredible film--the acting is perfect--I love the casting. Catherine Zeta Jones is so powerful, as is Renee Z. Ruchard Gere is at his best, as well, which was a cool surprise!

5 out of 5 stars Bob Fosse lives on!.......2007-04-02

The dance and music and lyrics of Bob Fosse is still going strong, and it is evident through the big-screen adaptation of "Chicago". Director Rob Marshall stays faithful to Fosse's Broadway intentions, though he does change many things with the way the songs are performed (all songs are sung in reverie settings). Renee Zellweger and Richard Gere are very good when going along with their solos ("They Both Reached for the Gun" is fun and funny), but John C. Reilly, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Queen Latifah steal the show with their dazzling vocals ("Mister Cellophane", "When You're Good to Mama" and "I Can't Do It Alone" are well worth the oscar wins).

This movie is a splendid achievement, and if you don't even like musicals, then you'll probably be surprised at how much you're going to love this film.

The '70s and '80s rule as two of the most popular bands from that era join forces on Chicago/Earth Wind & Fire - Live at the Greek Theatre, a two-disc, nearly three-hour concert recorded in Los Angeles in 2004. These groups scored dozens of hits in their heydays, and if neither has come up with much of anything that's new in the past two decades, the sold-out audience at the Greek Theatre could hardly care less. Both Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire, have soldiered on despite key personnel changes over the years (Chicago bassist-singer Peter Cetera and EWF founder Maurice White are long gone, and much missed); here they perform energetic and tasteful versions of everything from "Make Me Smile," "I'm a Man," and "Saturday in the Park" (Chicago) to "That's the Way of the World," "Fantasy," and "Serpentine Fire" (EWF), among many others, to rapturous response. Nothing too exciting about all of that--in fact, it's a bit like witnessing a couple of very skilled tribute bands at work--but there are a few surprises, as when Chicago keyboardist-singer Bill Champlin takes the lead on "After the Love Has Gone" (which he co-wrote) and EWF singer Philip Bailey returns the favor on Chicago's "If You Leave Me Now." The highlights are the first and last portions of the show, when the two bands (complete with horn sections) share the stage for "September," "25 or 6 to 4," "Shining Star," and more, displaying genuine joy at performing together and generating a huge, infectious sound delivered with high definition visuals and digital audio. --Sam Graham

What a fantastic combination of great bands! You could have not asked for any better concert to add to one's concert collection!

1 out of 5 stars Chicago/Earth, Wind, & Fire - Live at the Greek Theatre.......2007-05-07

It was horrible sound quality, you could hear the band but the voices sounded like they had no mike's! It was very frustrating, because I wanted to like it, I love the bands!! It was very poor quality, I rated it one star because that was the lowest, but it was even lower than that!!

3 out of 5 stars Not As Good As It Looks !!.......2007-03-12

When I saw this DVD with both bands at the same concert, I saw it as a must have.
The good points first - good introduction with both bands performimg 3-4 numbers. Earth Wind & Fire sound as good as they ever have on any CD I have heard. Time has not changed their sound, just brilliant.
The DVD sound and picture quality are very good, as you would expect from recent recordings.
Now for the disappointing stuff. I was really looking forward to hearing EWF's song, "After The Love Has Gone". The lead singer from Chicago actually wrote it and HE comes on to do the lead vocals. EWF's vocal backing are brilliant but the song is ruined by the Chicago singer - his voice has deteriorated over the years and struggles to get the notes out - you would not recognise him if you have not heard the band since the 1970's or 1980's.
Chicago's best easy listening song "If You Leave Me Now" is sung by the EWF lead singer - although he can still sing and does a nice job, it does not sound like the song you wanted to hear Chicago sing.
Chicago these day, have several young singers in the band and with the aging lead singer struggling a bit, none of the vocals sound anything like the 70's an 80's recordings you are used to hearing.
The concert is still well produced and put together, but I wish I had bought a DVD with just EWF on it.

5 out of 5 stars Loving Earth Wind and Fire.......2007-02-23

Earth Wind and Fire are fabulous in this DVD. Chicago vocals are not so good.I watch the EWF performance very frequently and even listen to it as I exercise. The greatest thrill is to experience EWF live performances, I have seen them 7 times in 2007 at the Luxor in Las Vegas.

5 out of 5 stars from a music teacher's point of view.......2007-02-11

This DVD is excellent because it shows two distinct styles of music getting along. It also shows a variety of instruments that can reinforce the students' identification skills. Plus the music is fun to listen too. I usually only show one or two songs at a time. It also shows how bad it looks (at least from my point of view) to be chewing gum on stage.

While women shed more than a few tears over Love Story back in 1970, men had their equivalent with Brian's Song on TV. This biopic about the Chicago Bears' Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers is no mere sports film. It's one of those transcendent stories that struck a rare cultural nerve, a sensitive film about love, friendship, cancer, racial harmony, and football that came along at just the right time. James Caan is at his free-spirited best as Piccolo, and Billy Dee Williams is very charming as the quiet Sayers destined for superstardom. Roommates and rivals, these two rookies soon become best friends because of their competitive natures and complementary personalities. When Piccolo becomes stricken with cancer, his relentless will to live inspires the talented Sayers to reach his athletic potential. Jack Warden, as the masterful coach George Halas, superbly manipulates the ying and yang relationship for all it's worth. Michel Legrand's melancholy theme still lingers in the mind as one of the all-time greats. --Bill Desowitz

5 out of 5 stars Brian's Song.......2007-07-03

Based on Gale Sayers's autobiography, this indelible made-for-TV movie tells the true story of a friendship born through football that ends tragically. Coming off his success in "The Godfather," Caan is terrific as the spirited Piccolo, whose gutsy yet graceful attitude inspires Sayers (played with quiet, rookie confidence by Williams) to achieve his full potential. The craggy, always reliable Jack Warden co-stars as Bears Coach George Halas, and Shelly Fabares (from TV's "Donna Reed Show") is also solid as Brian's steadfast wife, Joy. This poignant, inspirational tale unfolds over just 75 minutes, but keep the Kleenex handy, as few remain unmoved by the end.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic for the Ages.......2007-05-20

I have watched Brian's Song many, many times over the years and with every viewing, I am warmed by this story of friendship, courage and hope. It is based on the true story of Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers, two Chicago Bears football players who played back in the 1960's.

Like many movies based on life, certain aspects of the story are fictionalized. For example, Brian did not have cancer in his right lung as the movie attests, but embryonal cell carcinoma in his chest cavity that eventually metastasized to his left breast and left lung, heart and liver--and even into his jaw. He did not die as easily or look nearly as healthy as Cann does; his illness and death are really sanitized and "Hollywood-ized". Also, although Brian and Gale were good friends in real life, they were not best friends. However, Caan and Williams do a brilliant job portraying their characters and it is easy to believe from their performances that these two characters do indeed care for one another.

There are several moving moments in this movie. The locker room scene is particularly touching because many of the players featured in this scene had heard the *real* Gale Sayers tell them that "Pic is sick. . .real sick" only a year and a half before, so we can assume the tears welling up in the players' eyes are genuine. Ed O'Bradovich and Dick Butkus, both of whom were friends of Piccolo's (and were pallbearers at his funeral), make appearances in the film.

Another great touch is the archival footage of Sayers and Piccolo running the ball and making touchdowns. Not only does the footage remind us of what an amazing player Sayers was and the dogged determination to succeed that Brian possessed, it reminds us that these people were real, that they did indeed exist. These "real life" touches adds a lot of poignancy to the story. Most of the footage of the real Brian comes from a game the Bears played against the Pittsburgh Steelers on November 9, 1969--the only game the Bears won that season. Although he did not know it, Brian was already very sick with cancer during this game, yet he played his heart out and even scored a touchdown--which is captured in the movie. This was the second to the last game he ever played. He was diagnosed with cancer only a week and a half later.

A final touch that really "makes" the movie is the musical score by Michal Legrand. The Brian's Song theme is a perfect blend of hope and sadness and is enough to make you cry all by itself. Interestingly, the real Brian's wife, Joy, said that Legrand was one of his favorite composers.

The DVD contains a few "extras" including a so-so audio commentary by Billy Dee Williams and James Caan. The commentary is witty in some spots, but it does not provide much insight into the movie's "behind the scenes" elements. Caan reminds us that the movie was made only about a year after Brian Piccolo's death and several times he mentions that he felt the "weight" of playing the role of a person that the entire Chicago Bears team dearly loved.

If you enjoy this movie, I highly recommend that you read Jeannie Morris' biography of Brian Piccolo entitled Brian Piccolo: A Short Season. It tells the whole story of Brian's life both on and off the field and goes into great detail about his illness and the tremendous courage and humor with which he faced it.

5 out of 5 stars Great classic ... .......2007-05-07

I remember seeing this film with my girlfriends a long time ago. Haven't seen it ever since. That's why I bought it, I was so impressed with it at that time and still am. It's a great classic, I recommend it to everyone. Btw it teaches you a lot about true friendship.

5 out of 5 stars Great when you need a good cry!.......2007-03-10

I first saw Brian's Song when I was about 13 years old. It made me laugh and cry. My sisters and I would wait anxiously for it to be re-run. This is a great sports movie about relationships and like "Remember the Titans" it is based on a true story which makes it even more poignant.

It is a 30 year old made for TV movie, so the production values are not great, but the story and the performances by Billy Dee Williams and James Caan are amazing.

I recommend this to anyone looking for a funny, sad and touching movie

5 out of 5 stars The First "Guy Cry" Movie Ever.......2007-03-05

When I was playing HS football, this movie hit the air waves. It did so with such a powerful stir as well.

Guys crying at or watching a movie was never heard of, but for weeks afterwards, my teammates and other friends admitted to crying when we all discovered that "Pic" had cancer and especially when he was told after an operation that he still did.

This is the first of many James Caan great acts. The week before the Superbowl this year one of the networks showcased the foundations for cancer run by the families of Brian Piccolo and Walter Peyton. It was amazing seeing old news footage and videos of Brian with his wife. Caan and Fabresze looked just like them.

The movie really broke a lot of ground. First, a white and a black player sharing hotel rooms on the road. Even coach Hallas warned them that there may be trouble. But these two, who vied for the same position, would become the best of friends.

Piccolo even ups the ante when Sayers gets injured working with him to get back to playing. Brian tells him that since he was second team, he did not want to be first team if Sayers could not play. He told him he was going to beat him at his best and they worked together to get Sayers back in playing shape.

Eventually, they both start in the backfield and they are elated.

Brian's illness comes on quickly, yet you feel the sadness and the suffering of all around him.

After the movie I found the book written by Gayle Sayers entitled; "I am Third." The movie was based on Sayers autobiography. For anyone interested in playing sports at any level, this book is a must and is related to the movie for sure.

The movie shows that the ultimate of teamwork is working together and sacrificing for one another. Practing what you learn in Brian's Song will take your work life, family life and social life to a much higher level. Enjoy this movie with your family and friends. And really, it is okay for guys to cry, they will even brag about it.

When he isn't rubbing shoulders with the likes of Kofi Annan and George W. Bush, the activist Bono has a side project he likes to call "U2." U2: Vertigo - Live From Chicago captures the band on two nights during their tour to support How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. Once known for taking the most technologically extravagant shows on the road, the boys from Dublin have settled into a comfortable role of rock elder statesmen, placing emphasis on the anthems and weepers of their considerable body of work rather than gigantic lemons that descend from the rafters. Always a band that reflects the zeitgeist, this concert film finds them at their earnest best, with comparatively stripped-down stage production and superbly recorded sound. To call U2's more rocking songs "anthems" borders on understatement, and it is their anthems that ring most exuberantly in Chicago's United Center. Bono understandably looks heavier and wearier than in days past, perhaps due to the weight of the world he has hoisted onto his shoulders. While the icon roams the circular stage around the Metallica-style "snakepit," The Edge, drummer Larry Mullen Jr., and bassist Adam Clayton pin the songs to the floorboards and take them to the heavens. How can these guys not play fantastically together? Standouts include hits both classic and newly minted, among them "Beautiful Day," "New Year's Day," "Pride (In the Name of Love)," and "Sunday Bloody Sunday." Late in the concert Bono makes his appeal to the leaders of the world to end extreme poverty, invoking the imagination of a country that put a man on the moon. Ingeniously, he asks the crowd to take out their cell phones and text-message an account that operates as a petition to end world hunger. With the stadium aglow in LED screens, the band smoothly glides into "One." Elsewhere, Bono invokes religion, donning a headband decorated with Islamic, Jewish, and Christian symbols, assuming the appearance of a grizzled No Nukes protester circa 1975. (Perhaps this is a new persona akin to The Fly?) Kidding aside, these may be days in which we need the uplift and passion of U2 more than the 1990s, when they dressed up as the Village People and occasionally performed at K-Mart. Not suitable for those who don't wish to save the world. --Ryan Boudinot

5 out of 5 stars Saw them for the first time........2007-02-01

I saw them for the first time live in Minneapolis at the Target Center. We ended up in the center of the ring. The show was incredible and left everyone wanting more (although 2+ hours was plenty.) I have listened to U2 for a number of years. I bought Joshua Tree when it came out and some others albums throughout the years. The DVD is really good, but does not compare to seeing it live in person. If they are coming near you, I highly recommend getting some tickets.

5 out of 5 stars As close to the real thing as you are going to get........2007-01-11

Saw the boys twice on tour and just wanted a little bit more. The DVD does not dissappoint and is a great way to relive the tour.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Experience.......2007-01-10

The Vertigo Tour DVD is possibly the best rock concert DVD ever published. Every song is a gem, and the production values are high.

I caught the concert when they came to Denver. This DVD captures the look and feel of the concert. Great sound. Highly recommend to any U2 fan.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Blu-ray title.......2007-01-28

This movie has the BEST audio of any Blu-ray movie, and far better than anything HD-DVD can offer. I don't really like musicals, but I wanted to experience the audio for this film and it was simply amazing, the picture was excellent too. Just make sure you have your HDMI cables hooked up correctly!

5 out of 5 stars IT WILL RAZZLE DAZZLE YOU..........2007-01-21

This is a fantastic musical. From the beautifully designed sets, to the period costumes, to the show-stopping song and dance numbers, it will simply razzle-dazzle the viewer. The director and his singing and dancing troupe of stars simply pull out all the stops in this brilliantly executed musical.

The film, which provides a cynical and satirical look at fame and fortune, centers in nineteen twenties Chicago around two murderesses, Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Roxie Hart (Renee Zellweger). Velma, who together with her sister, was a dance hall success, killed her husband and her sister when she caught them together en flagrante delicto. True to the maxim, however, that the show must go on, she goes on stage immediately after dispatching the two lovers, where she is promptly arrested.

Roxie Hart, an admirer of Velma Kelly, is married to Amos Hart (John C. Reilly), a good-hearted, regular Joe, but she longs for tabloid fame and fortune. She begins to have an affair with a man who promises that he could get her a stage gig only to find that he lied just to get her in bed. So, she ends up killing him. Her long suffering husband stands by his little woman as she is trundled off to jail to await trial. There, she meets her idol, Velma Kelly, who finds her hero-worship annoying.

In the jail, Matron "Mama" Morton (Queen Latifah) reigns supreme over the inmates, accepting bribes for favors. Velma Kelly, represented by star defense attorney Billy Flynn (Richard Gere), is in tabloid heaven. Roxie Hart, longing to be in tabloid heaven as well, gets her husband to retain Billy Flynn on her behalf. Before she knows it, she, too, is in tabloid heaven, playing the media like a violin.

The legal profession also gets a cynical slap in the guise of the slimy, fast talking Billy Flynn, who looks for the best selling point rather than for the truth. He understands the thirst of the media for the perfect sound-bite and he gives it to them. Guilty or not guilty, it doesn't matter. What matters to him, as a hired mouthpiece, is the media mileage he can get for his client, as well as for himself. To that end, he is the ventriloquist, and his client is no more than his dummy.

The razzle-dazzle musical numbers move the story along. Catherine Zeta-Jones is terrific, looking impossibly beautiful and showing off her musical theatre background to great advantage with "All That Jazz" and "Cell Block Tango". Queen Latifah is outstanding as the sly and voracious Mama Morton, who goes whichever way the wind is blowing. She also has a show-stopping musical number, "When You're Good To Mama" that is simply memorable. Renee Zellweger, though not a professional singer or dancer, shows that she can sing and dance with the best of them.

The men also shine in this musical. John C. Reilly, as Roxie's long-suffering husband, also has a terrific number, "Mister Cellophane", that is truly heart rending and poignant, as well as metaphoric. Richard Gere gamely rises to the occasion in his first musical, making the slick Billy Flynn character an integral part of the film with his "Razzle Dazzle" number and his tap dancing.

I love this top notch, clever film, finding it hugely entertaining. It deserves every one of its six Academy Awards, including that for "Best Picture". Director Rob Marshall deserves kudos for this brilliantly directed, seamlessly edited, musical masterpiece. While it is a fairly faithful screen adaptation of Bob Fosse's Broadway musical, it has Rob Marshall's contemporary imprimatur on it. It is a film of which he can be justly proud. Bravo!

2 out of 5 stars Ersatz.......2007-01-08

"Captain Kirk, the approaching probe will destroy Earth if we do not respond with whale sound!" "O.K., send them some." "The sounds will be real but it will just be gibberish." "Well people watched `Chicago'; what make you think the probe is any more discerning?"

The plot line by (Maurine Dallas Watkins) is a killer; it is all about the whimsical world of killing. Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones) killed her husband and sister. Roxie Hart (Renée Zellweger) shoots her boyfriend Fred Cassely (Dominic West) dead. And a whole bevy of sleazy babes that killed their significant others. They kill a few songs. And the plot was never alive.

It is possible that the play may have had some redeeming social value. However by the time it was hacked up for this movie the only thing of value is the fast forward button. And again just because the movie has the appearance of a play does not give it any virtue.

Over the course of 15 hours on four double-sided DVDs, Chicago Bulls: The 1990s documents the Bulls' incredible run of six NBA championships in eight years led by the game's greatest-ever player, Michael Jordan. Like the earlier DVD release Ultimate Jordan, it collects a number of programs originally released on VHS, in this case the yearly highlight videos that summarized each of the six championship seasons, plus a five-minute introduction that covers the franchise starting in the 1960s and ending with its drafting of Jordan.

Where the NBA Dynasty series (the other initial entry is the slightly meatier Los Angeles Lakers: The Complete History) outdoes Ultimate Jordan is in the six playoff games--one for each year--as they were originally broadcast, minus halftime and commercials. Having the nearly complete game (usually running 90-100 minutes, from the TV introductions to post-game interviews) means you can skip straight to John Paxson's clutch basket or what was expected to be the final shot of Jordan's career. Or you can savor each game in its entirety, all the better to appreciate the artistry of Jordan in his three-pointer barrage against Portland or his "flu game" against Utah. You can see other great players too, of course, including Jordan's teammates--Scottie Pippen, Horace Grant, Dennis Rodman--and those opponents unfortunate enough to face the Bulls--Clyde Drexler, Charles Barkley, John Stockton, Karl Malone, and others. Because these are all NBA Finals games, you won't see Jordan's shot over Craig Ehlo or his 63-point coming-out party against Boston, but the 1990s Chicago Bulls were a team for the ages, and merely having their games--some of them all-time classics--available for home viewing is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi

I suggest this to anybody who is interested in the Era that was the early 90's...When Jordan was in his prime dominating the league and winning 6 NBA Titles. I recommend this to anybody who is a fan of basketball. It is a great buy and includes the bulls best games in their entirety.

5 out of 5 stars Everything is there........2006-08-03

I'm an italian fan of NBA. My favourite team is LA Lakers and I thought there would be no such a period like the 80s with Lakers-Celtics finals!
Well maybe there is: it's the 90s with the Bulls domination and MJ show. The DVD collection is complete and the bonus games are well choosen.

3 out of 5 stars Bulls teams were better than this set.......2006-07-05

First of all, each of the 6 Chicago Bulls championship teams were great teams. The DVDs are perfect for lazy evenings or age-group team barbecues, but I do have two complaints:
1) The games are not in fact "complete" or "as it happened" - significant chunks are cut out of the games, especially 1998 game six. Several minutes are skipped. (On the other hand, I really appreciate the lack of commercials during the time-outs.)
2) These may be Jordan's best games of each series (I'm not even sure about that), but they are not the team's defining games. For instance, from the Lakers series I would have preferred game 2, where the Bulls found the answer to Magic Johnson won their first finals game; from the Blazers series, game 6, where Pippen lead the reserves in a great 4th quarter comeback to win the series. On the other hand, the 1993 (Paxson's 3) and 1998 (Jordan on Russell) selections are spot-on.
Nice set but I'm docking two stars for these issues.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars too much.......2007-05-20

While I thought it was fun to hear some of the old tunes from both of these groups(they perform separately then together at the end), overall musically they were just OK. The two lead singer/guitar player guys were about 25 and stuck out like sore thumbs, playing with these other guys in their 50-60's. One guy with EW&F jumped around the whole time he was on stage like he couldn't keep still. I'm from this era of music and I love this stuff but the production was overdone with too much jumping around and not enough musical excellence. After watching Eagles Farewell Tour I, this looked thrown together with too much fluff and not enough attention to the basics.

5 out of 5 stars Get the live feeling.......2007-05-13

1 out of 5 stars BE CAREFULL!.......2007-03-19

I saw this DVD at a friend's house and I just had to have it - it's AWESOME and it deserves 5 stars. The reason for the one star is that when I received the DVD the cover said that it only plays on HD DVD players. Since I just spent close to $3000 on a HD 50 inch plasma TV and a home theater system to go with it, I did not think it was a problem. Well, I was WRONG. This HD DVD does NOT play on my DVD player - it is not compatible. I did not realize that I was getting the HD DVD version of this DVD. I want to order one that plays on my DVD player but I am hesitant - how will I know I will be getting the one that plays on the DVD player that I have? I cannot return it since it's been opened so now I am stuck with a $20.00 DVD that I cannot play. I am very, very disappointed.

The greatest basketball player of all time gets an appropriate clip reel in this 45-minute documentary, which was originally released in the IMAX format. While you can't simulate IMAX's 80-foot-high screen in your living room, you can still get the thrills and awe-inspiring footage of this tribute to one man's talent and endurance. Much of the original footage was shot during the 1997 NBA Finals between the Chicago Bulls and the Utah Jazz. With great behind-the-scenes footage and terrific game material, the film gets close to Jordan in practice and on the court. And the film includes a number of greatest hits, including his commercials and most memorable dunks. Still, while there are intriguing interviews with everyone from former Bulls coach Phil Jackson to professional Jordan hanger-on Bob Greene, this film seems a little self-serving at times (Jordan's company coproduced it). Also, some key voices from that team are conspicuously absent, including Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, and Ron Harper. In the end, however, it's all about the highlights--and Jordan's career (and his NBA finale) was one long one. --Marshall Fine

I haven't seen MJ to the Max and I hope I like it.

5 out of 5 stars MJ awesome on and off the court.......2004-08-31

I bought this DVD without really knowing what to expect. I didn't really expect the IMAX feeling to translate well to a smaller screen, and to tell the truth, it doesn't. But that is not a problem here.
Michael Jordan is an athlete larger than life and he does not need a big screen to relay that. His messages are powerful and his philosophy is an excellent source to anyone, but especially if you're raising children. He loves children in general, specifically his own, and a lot of what he says relates to children.
You will not be let down by this DVD, the message is powerful and MJ on the court is always a delight.
