Joseph Mankiewicz's brightly stylized film of Frank Loesser's classic musical (based on the stories of Damon Runyon) casts the criminal underworld as a harmless fantasy in this whimsical vision of the Big Apple. Nonsingers Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons acquit themselves fine in the lead roles as high-rolling gambler Sky Masterson and Salvation Army missionary Sarah Brown. It's odd casting, to say the least. Frank Sinatra, who plays the good old reliable Nathan Detroit (who runs "the oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York") is left with novelty tunes while husky Brando delivers the love songs and hits, including "Luck Be a Lady." But in the context of the colorful dialogue and comically affected speech patterns (a giddy gangster-speak straight out of Runyon's breezy stories) the song performances aren't the least out of place. Stubby Kaye, reprising his role as Nicely Nicely from the Broadway run, practically steals the show in his few scenes and his show-stopping solo "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat." The film is overlong at two and a half hours and somewhat stagily confined in the stylized, studio-bound sets--perhaps the mark of a director who had never helmed a musical before--but a terrific cast of eccentrics and Michael Kidd's high-energy choreography gives the film a memorable and enchanting character. --Sean Axmaker

Description
Hollywood legends Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Jean Simmons and Vivian Blain (from the original Broadway cast) are dazzling in this Frank Loesser (How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying) masterpiece, unleashing a "spectacular, song-and-dance show that's loaded with entertainment" (New York Journal-American). Featuring hits like "Luck Be a Lady" and "A Woman in Love," this smash film version of one of Broadway's most popular musicals is guaranteed, rip-roaring "four-starentertainment" (New York Daily News). The slickest big-time New York City gamblers,Sky Masterson (Brando) and Nathan Detroit (Sinatra), can't resist making or taking a bet on anything. So when a pretty missionary (Simmons) sets up shop in the neighborhood, Nathan stakes a grand that Sky can't seduce her. But all bets are off when Sky falls madly in love in this romantic musical spectacular that sets the Big Apple afire with excitement!

Guys and Dolls.......2007-06-26
n Joseph L. Mankiewicz's buoyant adaptation of Frank Loesser's immortal "Guys and Dolls," Frank Sinatra shines as Nathan Detroit, purveyor of the "oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York." Marlon Brando (in his prime) is better than you'd expect as Sky Masterson, even with some reedy vocals, but you keep waiting for Nathan to show up again. His dealings with fiancée Adelaide (Vivian Blaine) are a particular highlight, while the portly Stubby Kaye steals every scene he's in playing Nicely Nicely Johnson. Vibrant, rousing entertainment.
THIS DOLL LOVES THIS MUSICAL!!!.......2007-06-10
I love this movie musical! Sure...Brando & Simmons aren't known for their musical abilities, but they are fantastic in these roles. Many say that Sinatra should be Sky & that Blaine should be Sarah (since Sky & Sarah have to sing a majority of the songs in this musical). I totally disagree! I can't imagine Sinatra & Blaine switching roles with Brando & Simmons! All 4 of them are PERFECT in their roles!
When casting individuals in roles, one has to consider MORE than his/her musical abilities - his/her appearance/build, speaking voice, personality, ability to communicate certain emotions to the viewers, a couple's CHEMISTRY - YEAH CHEMISTRY, etc.
Fantastic movie and fantastic service.......2007-05-14
the movie was delivered on time and in mint condition. I love it!!
Fabulous despite the flaws.......2007-04-10
I. Love. This. Movie. My sister introduced me to it and I've loved it ever since. Marlon Brando - though struggling as a singer - did an EXCELLENT job as Sky Masterson. The only other person worthy of this role is Ewan McGregor (who incidentally played the part in London but sadly not on film so I didn't get to see it). The love story that developes between the bad boy with a heart of gold - Sky Masterson - and the good girl who could use a tidge of irreverance in her life while turning a bad boy good - Sarah - is simply wonderful. If you love romance and you love music, you'll love this movie.

Description
WEST SIDE STORY: This "brilliant" (The New Republic) film sets the ageless story of Romeo and Juliet against a backdrop of gang warfare in 1950s New York. Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins and scripted by Ernest Lehman, the film combines Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's unforgettable score ("Maria," "America," "Somewhere," "Tonight") with Robbins' own exuberant choreography to achieve an exhilarating "work of art" (Saturday Review). A love affair is fated for tragedy amidst the vicious rivalry of two street gangs - the Jets and the Sharks. When Jets member Tony (Richard Beymer) falls for Maria (Natalie Wood), the sister of the Sharks leader, it's more than these two warring gangs can handle. And as mounting tensions rise, a battle to the death ensues, and innocent blood is shed in a heartbreaking finale. FIDDLER ON THE ROOF: "An outstanding accomplishment in every category" (Boxoffice), this lavishly produced and critically acclaimed screen adaptation of the international stage sensation tells the life-affirming story of Tevye (Topol), a poor milkman whose love, pride and faith help him face the oppression of turn-of-the century czarist Russia. Nominated for eight Academy Awards®, including Best Picture and Best Director, and featuring such classic songs as "If I Were A Rich Man," "Matchmaker" and "Sunrise, Sunset," Fiddler on the Roof is a universal story of hope, love and acceptance - a "stunning, joyful and jubilant" (New York Daily News) musical masterpiece. GUYS AND DOLLS: Hollywood legends Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Jean Simmons and Vivian Blain (from the original Broadway cast) are dazzling in this Frank Loesser (How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying) masterpiece, unleashing a "spectacular, song-and-dance show that's loaded with entertainment" (New York Journal-American). Great Collection.......2007-01-19
Love all three musicals! Great for those just beginning to build a collection of movie musicals.
Great buy.......2007-01-14
Three really great musical movies in one package, how can you go wrong? A permanent addition to my DVD collection.
Buyer Beware!.......2005-10-25
I returned this boxed set to Amazon for a refund because the 3 films inside are not as advertised on the Sony/Columbia website. All 3 films are supposed to be in anamorphic widescreen, but only 1 of them (FIDDLER ON THE ROOF) actually is. GUYS AND DOLLS is still the same old "letterbox" version, and they put the awful pan-and-scan fullscreen version of WEST SIDE STORY in this box. If you're a collector like me, you will not want to see WSS in pan-and-scan. This film won 10 Oscars--one of them for its innovative widescreen cinematography. This product is not as advertised, and Sony/Columbia should know that they can't pull a fast one like this. Please join me in boycotting this collection until they give us what they promised. Thanks.
AMERICAN MOVIE MUSICALS COLLECTION.......2005-10-22
I purchased this collection ONLY because GUYS AND DOLLS is advertised as ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN 2.35:1 which is NOT correct. The back of the box even gives this erroneous information. This is the same LETTERBOXED (non-Anamorphic) transfer in the original single disc MGM DVD release. This is FALSE advertisement.
WEST SIDE STORY is a 4:3 PAN and SCAN version. FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is correctly advertised as ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN 2,35:1. I know the price is superb for these three classic musicals, but I already own ALL of these in WIDESCREEN, and I really wanted GUYS AND DOLLS with a new ANAMORPHIC transfer. I am planning to return the set. SHAME ON YOU MGM and SONY PICTURES DVD for the attempt to fool the public with this release.

Off the Record is not a full-length performance of the classic musical Guys and Dolls, but rather a 55-minute documentary about the making of the studio recording by the cast of the smash 1992 revival. Featured are complete takes of such all-time favorite songs as "Fugue for Tinhorns," "Adelaide's Lament," "Sue Me," "The Oldest Established," and "Luck Be a Lady." Especially thrilling are the company numbers, including one of Broadway's greatest showstoppers, "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat." In addition to the music, director Jerry Zaks and musical director Edward Strauss offer coaching on the harder numbers (we thankfully see only two of the first 129 takes of "My Time of Day"), and stars Peter Gallagher, Josie de Guzman, Nathan Lane, and Faith Prince offer commentary on the show and their characters. This video does a terrific job of capturing the excitement, tension, and energy of the studio and is a lot of fun for anyone who enjoys Broadway cast recordings. --David Horiuchi

Fab Fun For Guys & Dolls Fans.......2006-08-15
This recording is a wonderful opportunity for anyone who has not seen the Broadway cast perform this fun show! This is how I was introduced to Faith Prince, whose performance is ASTONISHING and FAR surpasses the relatively lame one from the movie. It's not a full reproduction of the show, but all of the big numbers are done completely and you can >>> SEE
<
<
< the fun that the cast is having with the music and the roles.
Though I really, REALLY liked Frank Sinatra as Nathan Lane and Stubby Kaye as Nicely-Nicely, I would have LOVED to see THIS group perform the show!
It shows the less attractive sides of some of the actors.......2002-01-23
The documentary is a thrilling piece of how the 1992 revival CD of Guys and Dolls was made. My only regret is that they never mention the name of the show. I never knew that Faith Prince was a dirty mouth and 40 years old. I didn't know that Peter Gallagher had rotten teeth. I didn't know that Jozie de Guzman had more gums than teeth. It is a good documentary nonetheless.
One heck of a documentary.......2002-01-23
I watched a bit of this when I got the role of Nicely-Nicely Johnson at the Company Theatre in Norwell. I enjoyed the bits of footage at the beginning and the bit where, "Adelaide doesn't say [expletive deleted]. That was the dirtiest bit of the documentary. I didn't realize that the director was such a good singer. I also didn't know that Peter Gallagher had such ugly teeth. I didn't know that Jozie de Guzman had more gums than teeth. I like looking at them in the pictures of the inlay card. All in all, it is a very nice documentary.
wow! a must have for fans of bway soundtracks!.......2001-02-19
This fabulous video is an exciting, funny peak at the recording of the new broadway cast soundtrack of the classic musical. I love this video and highly reccomend it. I would just say if your really not a fan of anyone in the show or the music the video will get tiresome, otherwise, go for it.
Highly informative and enjoyable!.......1999-07-22
I performed in this musical when I was 16, and I adored every aspect. Since then, the music has become some of my favorite, and I love anything to do with it. This movie not only gave me an idea of what it must have been like to do this show professionally, but it also revealed the personalities of some of my favorite Broadway stars! I thought it was a neat idea for a video!

Customer Reviews:
For the music and the minor players primarily.......2006-06-05
The movie is not as good as the show, although certain parts remain . For me the most memorable is Stubby Kaye as Nicely- Nicely Johnson. Vivian Blaine also plays in the movie her Broadway role.
This is the way AllMovieCom. describes the origin of the show and film.
"This 1955 film began life as two Runyon short stories, the most prominent of which was "The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown." This material was fleshed out into a 2-act libretto by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling, then set to music by Frank Loesser and directed by George S. Kaufman. Opening late in 1950, Guys and Dolls was one of Broadway's hottest tickets for several seasons. The plot involves a certain Broadway citizen by the name of Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra), who maintains the "Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York." Seeking a location for his latest high-stakes game, Nathan has an opportunity to rent out the Biltmore Garage, but he needs $1000 to do so. He decides to extract the money from high-rolling Sky Masterson (Marlon Brando), known for his willingness to bet on anything. Nathan wagers that Sky will not be able to talk the virginal Salvation Army lass Sarah Brown (Jean Simmons) into going on a date with him."
Both Brando and Sinatra are not at their best here. What is great is the music and the minor players ( Once again Stubby Kaye) and they make this movie a truly fine piece of entertainment.

Guys and Dolls.......2007-01-30
The DVD was good the material content was definitely a 60's musical.
