Of all the Danny Kaye movies, this musical biography of the legendary vagabond storyteller is definitely the most poignant, extending the performer's range far beyond his usual comic shtick. It may not be as funny as Wonder Man, but it has so much more going for it. In fact, the film is really more about Kaye than Andersen, providing rare insight into his humanitarian ideals and rapport with children. The Frank Loesser score is beautiful, as is the Technicolor cinematography. Among the songs performed, "Inchworm," "Thumbelina," and "Ugly Duckling" are the standout favorites. --Bill Desowitz

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful and beautiful story.......2007-06-22
This was sent to me from I don't know who, but I've always loved the stories of Hans Christian Andersen, as well as Danny Kaye being a favorite performer.
Hans Christian Andersen is a Dutch cobbler who enjoys telling stories to the children in his village. When concerns for the children's education begins to anger the adults, Hans and his apprentice Peter leave for Coppenhagen for new territory. In Coppenhagen, Hans finds inspiration for some of his most memorable stories, as well as love for a beautiful ballerina.
Danny Kaye is endearing and charming as he works with the children he tells the stories to.
The music is beautiful and charming and the ballet scene is fantastic.
I heartily recommend this movie to fans of musicals, fairytales or ballet.
Hans Christian Anderson.......2007-06-08
I grew up on this movie back in the 60's and I enjoy watching it just as much today. My husband's father was a friend of Frank Loesser, the composer of the words and music for the film, and also his payroll manager for years at his music company Frank Music, so I might be a little biased. Danny Kaye is great as Hans, the shoemaker who makes up children's stories and songs, and all of the supporting cast is excellent as well, especially Farley Granger as a cranky play producer. If you don't know the songs already( The Ugly Duckling, Thumbelina, Inchworm....)they are all very catchy and will grow on you. The sets used in the film are all top notch and very beautiful. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards but did not win any. I can't say enough about this film. One thing I will say is if you didn't grow on this film like I did, children over 10 might find it some what dated. I wish there was some special features on the dvd but all you get is the trailer, it would have been nice to have a making of documentary or director's commentary, maybe in a future release. But this disc will do for now especially at this price. So sit back and enjoy an MGM classic with classic songs. They sure don't make them like this anymore.
music.......2007-05-24
This is a sweet movie I saw the first time in the 40's and I had to find and watch again. The Ugly Duckling is precious. Great for all children.pat
POOR QUALITY.......2007-04-01
THE SOUND IS BAD. I HAVE TRIED THIS DVD ON 2 DIFFERENT PLAYERS AND IT MADE NO DIFFERENCE.
Great movie, but no real features.......2007-02-21
My niece and I love the movie. We sing Thumbelina all the time. The movie is a treasure.
I just wish it had some special features worthy of the movie.

The Little Mermaid - Based on Hans Christian Andersen's Classic Tale (UAV Corporation).......2007-06-01
My sister found this one and it was a trip down memory lane. The storyline is true to the original fairytale. The graphics are very clear and if you have ever watched The Last Unicorn, you will know what I mean.
The storyline itself requires a kind heart. Marina's songs are soft and hard to hear and the dolphin gets annoying at times with his cries. However, if you have children, they will absolutely love this movie.
If you're a Little Mermaid Disney fan, you might be disappointed, by this simple storyline. This one is for the kids of the eighties.
The Anime Version.......2007-05-18
As all the reviewers have said, this version of "The Little Mermaid" is not some cheesy cartoon. This is the 70's anime version that is based more on the original story then the happy Disney version. The mermaid's name is Marina and her dolphin friend is Fritz. It was great to finally find this movie on DVD. However, I had one problem with it. When the movie first came out, there was some nudity, though it was nothing serious. The mermaids are bra-less. However, in this DVD version, some of the movie appears choppy because they have edited out parts of certain scenes. Having watched the movie about 1000 times when I was a kid, I remember certain scenes to be longer. However, they only cut about 5 total minutes out of the movie and it is still the great animated film that I remember. To summarize: Movie - 5 stars, DVD version - 4 stars
A Little More Effort Please.......2007-04-23
I'm a 27 year old entering that period of nostalgia wherein I begin to desire the things I haven't seen since my youth. Yet time and again my elation at discovering a beloved tale long lost is squelched by disappointment in the cover art. The Secret of Nimh, The Last Unicorn... And this one for The Little Mermaid is the worst yet; it doesn't even _remotely_ resemble the film's protagonist.
Which is particularly absurd because the movie is not for the young audiences the cover is clearly targeted at. At least not for them, only. This version is more true to the tragedy of the original story and does not have the jolly happy end that the cover implies.
The fact that it doesn't appear to include the original Japanese language track cements my decision not to purchase this version. It will be worth the effort to buy an import and play it on my regionless player.
the original story in anime style.......2007-03-25
This is the one I've been looking for on DVD, the one that ends sadly. The picture quality has not been re-mastered for the DVD format; it's the exact same quality that I have on VHS. A few minor scenes were deleted so some transitions are slightly jumpy compared to VHS. But Marina and Fritz are as good as I remember, and the quality is watchable for the cheap price.
Dark Little Mermaid.......2007-03-24
I'm very happy with my order, this was the version I've been looking for! Disc was in great shape, looked new.

One of the great figures of world literature, Danish author Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) is renowned for his children's tales, yet comparatively little is known of his extraordinary rise from poverty to preeminence. Hallmark Entertainment presents the story behind the storyteller, one as full of pathos as Andersen himself. In his film debut, Kieran Bew is remarkable as Andersen, an impoverished child who, at age 15, runs away to Copenhagen. Destitute, he's befriended by a wealthy benefactor, Jonas Collin (James Fox), who offers him shelter, education, and, ultimately, an audience with a publisher. As the biography unfolds, so does Andersen's brilliant imagination. The film deftly weaves snippets of his fairy tales ("The Snow Queen," "The Little Mermaid") into the real-life scenes of a man whose rise to fame is tangled with the strains of success and a tendency to believe his own fiction. An inventive script and strong ensemble cast make this a cinematic standout. (Ages 8 and older) --Lynn Gibson
Customer Reviews:
One of the best movies I've ever seen .......2007-06-15
This is a brilliant movie. I have watched it many times and I cried every time. It tells the life of Hans Christian Andersen, while slipping beautifully into the stories he wrote. The genius part is the way that the SAME actors and actresses are used in the "real life" part as well as the fairytales. This really helped to show the symbolism of the story, seeing it perhaps as Andersen saw them. It has wonderful costumes and beautiful singing. It also shows, very gently at first but later far more "in-your-face" Andersen's slip into insanity.
Rewritten Fairy Tales - Again!.......2007-02-10
I ordered this movie as research for a graduate project dealing with the way artists are portrayed by the film industry. I expected that, as a Hallmark production, it would be an enjoyable movie based on facts. I was disappointed on both counts.
My problems arise mostly from the way the main character was portrayed. Hans Christian Anderson, according to most documentation, was a homely, shy, naive man with an active imagination and a gift for storytelling. This movie presented him as a handsome, frenetic fool with an active imagination and a gift for storytelling.
The moviemakers took great liberties with both the timeline and with the facts of Anderson's life, and rewrote his fairy tales - again. The ones that he actually wrote were more concerned with presenting a moral lesson than a happy ending. For instance: The popular modern version of "Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid" is a search-for-true-love, happily-ever-after children's story. This movie's version is a love-at-first-sight, kill-him-when-he-betrays-you slice of contemporary urban behavior. Anderson's original tale was concerned as much with the search for an immortal soul as it was with selfless love, in which the mermaid dies rather than kill her love - who DID marry the other woman - and thus attained the soul that she longed for.
On the good side, the acting was good, the sets and costumes and lighting were pretty wonderful. The way that Anderson's imagination was shown turning everyday events into full-blown stories - his creative process - was very well done.
Still, overall, I expected far better from a Hallmark film.
Magical, but uneven film..........2006-09-08
I take David Eberhart's point about the depressing quality that weaves its way though this movie - the front end, during his early years, being the most depressing by far.
The almost Shakespearean tragedy of mis-placed affection and obsessive love that led Andersen to pursue the wrong woman is captured well, while various fairytales are woven into the real-life a story span.
Bew is almost over the top as a wacky but gifted Andersen, although his craziness gradually diminishes as the movie progresses.
Emily Hamilton gives a heartbreakingly sweet and sensitive performance as his 'adoptive' sister, whom any man in his right mind would have married in an instant.
By the time Andersen works out that he really loved Emily's character after all, it is too late...
When it works, it works beautifully, and the cast, which includes the superb James Fox and Alison Steadman (who turns in a couple of delicious cameos) all delivered admirable performances.
Not perfect, but worth a look.
great film.......2004-04-27
This version of Hans Christian Andersen is really great. Wonderful costumes scenery and good actors and also scenery and effects. Its version for children and grownups .
Magically produced and Charmingly Acted.......2004-02-02
Kieren Bew and Emily Hamilton bring most of the emotional and acting highs to this delightful production.
The art direction and styling of this splendrous melding of Hans Christian Andersen and his memorable stories are unforgettable.
Bew brings a delightfully childlike and charmingly bubbly prescence that disarms one and allows us into the mind and true story of one of history's delightful creations.
I recommend this very highly. To those who cherish Andersen and those have not been spoiled by this present world of in-your-face theatrics and slam-bang storytelling. All is not happy in this tale. But that's life...as Hans readily admits.
The pace is free and easy. Buy it, make yourself a cup of tea and sit back. Enjoy.

This collection of animated shorts (based on four of Hans Christian Andersen's much-loved fairy tales) offers a variety of visual styles. The Emperor's New Clothes is cartoonish, colorful, and accompanied by a jaunty soundtrack, all of which well serves the classic story: Two swindlers persuade a foolish king that their magical cloth can't be seen by the foolish and incompetent--so of course everyone pretends to be able to see it. The Ugly Duckling, about a duckling spurned by his family for being too different, isn't so much animated as illustrated; the mostly still pictures are lovely, but some children may find this approach a little dull. The Swineherd, a lesser-known story about a prince who disguises himself as a peasant to woo a vain princess, has a look that mixes Marc Chagall and medieval tapestries. The final story, Nightingale, uses gorgeous Japanese watercolors and simple but elegant line drawings to tell the story of an arrogant emperor who learns to value the sweet song a nightingale. All in all, a satisfying selection, sure to please young children and older Andersen fans. --Bret Fetzer

DON'T BUY THIS DVD.......2005-05-02
Most of the Scholastic Video Collection DVDs that I have are really good, though some of them are truly excellent. The main stories tend to be better than the bonus stories, but a few of the bonus stories are on par with the features. This DVD has a collection of stories that are even BELOW the standard of the most mediocre bonus stories. Don't waste your money on this one. Opt for Pete's a Pizza, Chyrsanthemeum, Harry the Dirty Dog, and Is Your Mama A Llama?

Customer Reviews:
terrible dvd, no entertainment value for adults or children.......2006-05-24
This was a truly horrid dvd. I thought it would be entertaining to watch anything Victor Borge did, because of his gentle comedic genious, but this story-reading is awful and boring for kids and adults alike. I really couldn't watch the whole thing.
Oh No, Mr. Borge !!.......2005-09-06
Even a die-hard Borge fan such as I, must wonder why Mr. Borge did this...very boring, very slow.
There is none of the classic Borge wit, or sparkle, which can brighten even the most drab of stories.
This DVD would be ideal for one purpose, and one purpose alone...the cure for insomnia...(with profound apologies, to the Master, Victor Borge).

Description
A newly animated version of the Ugly Duckling who doesn't fit in with the rest of the ducklings, and is forced to flee for his life in a test of survival and self discovery. Bonus Stories: "The Gardener and the Family", "Soup on a Sausage Peg ", "The Traveling Companion".
Customer Reviews:
Great collection, good quality.......2007-05-10
We have already 2 of the HC Andersen collection -El Patito Feo and El Soldadito de plomo- and they are both of excellent quality in every aspect. It's an European co-production so the Spanish accent is from Spain - perfect for us since that's what I'm teaching my son. The stories are safe for a pre-schooler but entertaining enough for an older child too. I've just bought "La princesa de las Nieves" and "El Ruisenor" from the same collection and can't wait until they get here!
Great buy in my opinion.
