The hit Broadway musical from the 1940s gets a lavish if not always exciting workout in this 1955 film version directed by old lion Fred Zinnemann (High Noon). Gordon MacRae brings his sterling voice to the role of cowboy Curly, and Shirley Jones plays Laurie, the object of his affection. The Rodgers and Hammerstein score includes "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top," "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'," and "People Will Say We're in Love," and Agnes DeMille provides the buoyant choreography. Among the supporting cast, Gloria Grahame is memorable as Ado Annie, the "girl who cain't say no," and Rod Steiger overdoes it as the villainous Jud. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Oklahoma!.......2007-06-26

Though the film is long and contains a fairly high corn factor, it's also visually stunning, and truly soars whenever the music and dancing starts, with peerless renditions of "People Will Say We're In Love," "The Surrey With The Fringe On The Top," and the immortal title tune. The dance numbers, choreographed by Agnes de Mille, are original and exuberant, while Steiger and Gloria Grahame turn in fine performances, respectively playing the dastardly Jud and the naively amorous Ado Annie, "the girl who can't say no."

5 out of 5 stars One of the all time great musicals.......2007-05-13

The music is great as well as the singing and acting. This movie is a visual treat for the eyes and it has great dancing as well. If you love musicals (particularly those made in the 40's 50's and 60's) than you will love this movie. While this movie has a dark side for the most part it reflects the optimism that seems to be so much a part of the American character. Watch it you will enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Purchase for use in Europe.......2007-04-23

I was so disappointed on receipt of the Oklahoma DVD that it would not work outside of the USA. I am sure it is well the cost.

5 out of 5 stars An American original.......2007-04-05

This version of "Oklahoma" will always remain my favorite. Gordon McRae and Shirley Jones are sheer perfection. Every single Rodgers and Hammerstein song including "Oh What a Beautiful Morning,""People Will Say We're in Love," "The Surrey With the Fringe on Top," "I'm Just a Girl Who Can't Say No," and the title song are romantic, humorous, original and beautifully sung and directed. This show is considered the quintessential American musical and after experiencing the amazing on-location sets, costumes, choreography by Martha Graham, dream sequence, and charming and delightful overall mood of this movie, you'll be humming these tunes for days!

5 out of 5 stars All of them.......2007-06-12

I have enjoyed having them as my own and adding to my collection so I can watch them whenever I want and as often as I want but most especially with no commercials and no editing!! Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, Fun, Fun.......2007-06-03

We love the effort that has been put into these DVDs. We will often set the disk to play just the "song" chapters.

We use the "sing-a-long" setting to teach our daughter to read.

If you love the music purchase this set. If you love the movies purchase this set.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic - All the great Musicals in one compact package.......2007-05-21

Not only does this set have all the classics there are bonus features (extra cd's) on each glorious movie. You cannot go wrong with this set. If you have children, this is a must-buy item - they will view these movies over and over again. And no worries about inappropriate materials - this is good wholesome entertainment for the entire family.

4 out of 5 stars A Collection of Great Musical Dramas.......2007-05-14

The Rodgers and Hammerstein Organisation has released this boxed set containing six of their film musicals, each of which comes with a second disc of bonus archival material and documentaries elaborating on the shows. The extra content varies: For example, in Carousel, the film of Liliom, the book on which the R&H show is based is included in its entirety. The bonus discs are themselves compelling viewing, especially prior to watching the main feature, which could be at a later stage because it could be too long to do both in one sitting; besides, these are the great masterpieces of the American Musical Theatre and Drama, although State Fair was first a film, and transferrred onto the stage more recently, and posthumously for the authors.

The stage and film musicals that Richard Rodgers, music, and Oscar Hammerstein II, lyrics, collaborated on, in both cases later in their careers, are the greatest of musical dramas to be found.

It makes revisiting these shows all the more interesting. These are the CinemaScope 55 versions. The Rodgers & Hammerstein Collection [Remastered] (The Sound of Music / The King and I / Oklahoma! / South Pacific / State Fair / Carousel)

5 out of 5 stars A Joyous Viewing Experience.......2007-05-13

The quality and beauty of the productions was first rate. My wife and I have enjoyed them all thoroughly and we will view them over and over again. Thank you for making them available.

When Mary Rodgers, daughter of the composer Richard Rodgers, was reported as saying she never wanted to see another Oklahoma!, it was her way of paying the highest tribute to Trevor Nunn's production at the Royal National Theatre which was subsequently taken into the studio and filmed. The camera follows the playgoers into the auditorium of the Olivier where in their company we watch the show and applaud the numbers as the real thing. Nunn treats Rodgers and Hammerstein's first collaboration with the utmost seriousness, restoring the full text so that it comes across as a drama indebted to Eugene O'Neill. Although Oklahoma! unfolds at a leisurely pace, it is extraordinary how one is drawn into the drama under Nunn's direction.

There's seldom a wish for true locations as the pace picks up and we move into the claustrophobic company of Judd Fry in his riveting encounter with the cowboy Curly. The close-up camera work affords an experience the theatre can't bring and also pays handsome dividends in appreciating Susan Stroman's intricate and lively choreography. Her dancers are a fine team, notably Jimmy Johnston who is outstanding as Will Parker leading the Kansas City ensemble. Hugh Jackman (X-Men) as Curly matches him in vocal prowess and looks, and Shuler Hensley sings the tricky role of Judd Fry very well. It's harder to place Peter Polycarpou's Pedlar, a considerably larger role than in the film version, whose accent strays from London's East End to the plains of Europe. Maureen Lipman, rightly deemed the lynchpin of the musical by Nunn, is a joy to watch as Aunt Eller. Laurey (Josefina Gabrielle) and Ado Annie (Vicki Simon) are good but not special. Aside from an abrupt start to Act Two and the occasional voice off microphone, the production sounds good with a larger orchestra present than in the theatre. An Oklahoma! on an epic scale. --Adrian Edwards

5 out of 5 stars The Brits Show Us How OKLAHOMA! Should be Staged.......2007-05-09

OKLAHOMA! opened on Broadway in 1943 and became a classic - not only because the Rodgers and Hammerstein score was so strong, but also because Agnes De Mille was brought in to introduce serious choreography to the Broadway stage. For the past 64 years this musical comedy/drama has been on the boards both professionally and in high schools, colleges and community theaters and always meets with audience acclaim. In 1999 Trevor Nunn reshaped the work, added choreography by Susan Stroman, beefed up the orchestrations, and re-staged the old warhorse in London and the result is an entirely fresh look and appreciation for an 'American classic'.

Nunn opens the inner conflicts of the story and emphasizes some of the more minor characters, a move that adds to the dramatic flow of the work. Yet his biggest asset is the presence of Hugh Jackman as Curly, a handsome stage presence who also happens to possess a strong baritone singing voice and is an agile dancer. From the opening bars of 'Oh, what a beautiful morning' he has us in his back pocket. The remainder of the cast is strong, with special kudos to Maureen Lipman as Aunt Eller, a woman of such plainsman power that she holds the story together with ease. Josefina Gabrielle as Laurey is a fine dancer and has a supple if monochromatic voice and brings a different kind of life to her role. And for once the sinister Jud Fry becomes an understandable villain in the fine work by Shuler Hensley.

For those who don't like audible applause from an audience during a show the technique of making the film appear like a live production will disturb. For this viewer seeing the British audience become involved in the response of this musical made it that much more fun. This is a very fine performance and film of an old American treasure. Grady Harp, May 07

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-04-03

I just watched this on PBS and ran immediately to the computer to order the DVD. I grew up working in local summer stock and community theatre--went on to major in theatre in undergrad before going to grad school for something more consistent with regular work. I worked on or was in a couple of productions of Oklahoma, and have seen several--some great, some not. I have always appreciated the wonderful music and the nearly operatic tone of the show. But before tonight, I had never seen this theatrical classic ACTED. It was spellbinding. Who knew what a great piece of drama this show could be? And for icing on the dramatic cake, the dancing was Seven Brides for Seven Brothers quality, and the vocal performances were the best, in aggregate, I've ever even heard ABOUT. The character of Jud Fry worked in ways I never new it could, due to inspired direction and a tour de force performance. Laurie and Curly actually dancing the dream ballet themselves removed a perenial speed bump in the show. Everything--just EVERYTHING works in this production. For me this is the definitive Oklahoma, and therefore the definitive musical theatre piece. If this wasn't what R and H intended, it should have been. It is a different show than the one I thought I knew. What a production! I can't wait for the DVD to get here so I can watch it again. Wow!

5 out of 5 stars OKLAindreciableHOMA.......2007-03-27

I've been a fan of Rodgers and Hammerstein for years, but Oklahoma was far from my favorite R&H show. The fifties Hollywood version always dissapointed me, I always thought the characters were so cardboard and one dimensional and the story so trite. Then one night I caught the second act of the London Stage Revival during a PBS pledge drive and had to get this. This is the reason I love musicals. This version enchanted me. The story was ACTED and acted so well. The dancing was rousing, robust and masculine. I haven't seen anything to top Seven Brides for Seven Brothers until now. I defy anyone to declare that the dancing in The Farmer and the Cowhand is sissified or to be able to sit still watching it. All the performers are wonderful, but Skyler Hensly is the quintesential Jud and Hugh Jackman is the essential Curly. He may not sing as well as Gordon McCrae but he makes up for it in making Curly a real character. Run and get this version!!!

5 out of 5 stars Americana on the Plains.......2007-03-24

High-energy encapsulation of the American spirit in this tough-tender production. Done lean and hard-scrabble, as opposed to the lush and green Hollywood version. Curley really is as wonderful as he sings he is. Aunt Eller, the matriarch, as done by Maureen Lipman is tough, and loving. Jimmy Johnson, the Welshman, jigs and does rope-tricks. Shuler Hensley's Jud is repulsive, and vulnerable. A classic. For your permanent library.

5 out of 5 stars That's Entertainment!.......2007-03-10

Saw this on PBS, could not wait to have it for my own. At the time, I didn't know who Hugh Jackman was, now I look for him in other movies.

Product Description

The 2007 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl had it all - drama, trick plays and an overtime 43-42 victory by underdog Boise State over Oklahoma in one of the most spectacular finishes in college football history! The Broncos appeared to be finished when Oklahoma cornerback Marcus Walker intercepted a Jared Zabransky pass and returned it for a touchdown to put the Sooners ahead 35-28 with a minute remaining. However, on fourth and 18 on the ensuing drive, Zabransky hits Drisan James, who lateraled to Jerard Rabb, who scampered in for a touchdown with seven seconds remaining in regulation. Overtime started with Oklahoma scoring an Adrian Peterson touchdown run. The Broncos answered with Vinny Perretta's fourth-down touchdown pass to Derek Schouman. With Boise State down by a point, Boise State head couch Chris Petersen decided to go for the victory. One the game's decisive play. Zabransky faked a pass, then handed the ball behind his back to tailback Ian Johnson, who raced into the end zone for the two-point conversion and the victory. This DVD includes the commercial-free complete Fox Sports game broadcast as well as special bonus features highlighting the Broncos' perfect season, a must-have for any football fan!

5 out of 5 stars Best finish ever in a college football game.......2007-07-01

The reactions of the fans as the drama unfolds say it all. At some point, everybody in the stadium was sure their team had won the game, then at some other point everybody was sure their team had lost the game.

This game is like a great movie where you know the ending yet you still find yourself on the edge of your seat every time you watch it. Boise State dominated the game and was doing a good job of controlling the ball and burning time as they cruised to victory...or did they? Oklahoma found a way to pull it out...or did they? Boise State had surely been handed a gut-wrenching loss...or had they? Oklahoma got down to business immediately in overtime, finally restoring order to the galaxy. Or did they? Three trick plays executed to perfection. The hero got the girl. Unbelievable.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Football Game of all Time.......2007-06-07

This is the greatest football game of all time. I watched this game live and taped it. The game is so fantastic that I watched and re-watched it until my video tape wore out, so I bought the DVD and couldn't be more happy. The video quality is first rate and the sound is outstanding!

The original broadcast is complete minus the commercials and some of the post-game analysis. The bonus features include a shortcut version of the game that skips the time between plays, player highlights, team highlights and a segment featuring selected plays with the local Boise radio audio. It also has the post game interviews and Ian Johnson's proposal.

5 out of 5 stars Must buy!.......2007-05-08

If you have not seen this game, this is a MUST BUY for ANY sports fan! By far, the best college football game I have ever watched. I thought the 2005 Rose Bowl with Leinhart and Young was exciting, but it does not compare at all to the level of intensity this Fiesta Bowl presents. Must buy!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Game to Remember.......2007-03-22

I was so thrilled to watch the game unfold.....one scream after another. This DVD does a bang up job of reproducing the game in different formats, fast play, normal time lapse, and highlites. I do not collect football dvds, I like vignettes of history. What a game.

5 out of 5 stars Tostito's Bowl Bowl - Boise St. Vs.Oklahoma 2006.......2007-03-17

4 out of 5 stars Great music. lyrics.......2007-03-17

One of Rodgers and Hammerstein's best. I think 4.5 would be more accurate. But not quite up to "The Sound of Music", or "The King and I"

    Product Description

It was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the 1985 Oklahoma Sooners. But with a physical defense and a lightning quick offense, the Sooners played themselves to a #3 ranking and a match-up with top-ranked Penn State in the 1986 Orange Bowl. After giving up seven points on the Lions' opening drive, the tough Sooner defense led by All-Americans Brian Bosworth, Tony Casillas, and Kevin Murphy, shut Penn State down. Big plays by the Sooners, and Tim Lashar's kicking, were the undoing of the Nittany Lions. True freshman QB Jamelle Holieway, who led OU to eight straight wins after taking over as a starter, hit All-American tight end Keith Jackson on a 71-yard pass play and Lydell Car ran 61 yards for another TD. Lasher added four field goals to make the final 25 - 10. When the Miami Hurricanes lost in the Sugar Bowl, the Sooners claimed their sixth national championship.

My daughter got this DVD for a Christmas present and it has been heavily played by every member of our family since. If you even remotely like the Rejects you are going to want to check out the DVD.
It has songs from their first CD. Nothing from the CD Move Along will be on this DVD. There are videos on it, there is concert footage, and there is footage of the guys hanging around their hometown of Stillwater, OK.
It is a DVD I let my 8 year old watch so, for the most part, it is an all ages DVD. Minor use of swear words.

This lavish set contains film versions of the five major works by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, who helped define the American musical landscape and rewrite the direction of musical theater. After enjoying extremely successful careers working with others, Rodgers and Hammerstein first teamed up in 1943 for the prairie tale Oklahoma!, with songs including "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" and "People Will Say We're in Love." The subsequent 1955 film starred Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones, who teamed up again for 1956's Carousel. While that film's dark nature made it less popular than its predecessor, the score ("If I Loved You," "You'll Never Walk Alone") was Rodgers's favorite. The King and I (also 1956) featured stage star Yul Brynner as the King of Siam and Deborah Kerr as schoolteacher Anna Leonowens, who must learn Asian customs even as she tries to instill some of her Western ones. The somewhat bloated version of South Pacific (1958) follows two couples during World War II and features standards such as "Some Enchanted Evening" and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair" from stars Mitzi Gaynor and Rossano Brazzi. The last film, The Sound of Music (1965), proved to be the most popular, with Julie Andrews winning the hearts of seven children and their father with her blissful songs. And if the perhaps saccharine music and plot may test the patience of some, there's no doubt that songs such as "My Favorite Things" and "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" have charmed audiences around the world for decades.

Accompanying the Big 5 in this set is the relatively minor State Fair from 1945 (though it does have "It Might as Well Be Spring" and "It's a Grand Night for Singing"). Some may prefer other entries in the R&H canon such as Flower Drum Song or the television production Cinderella, but those were produced by different studios. Five of these films (all except Sound of Music) were released in 1999 in sumptuous remasterings that allow their scores and locales to truly shine. The remasterings ensure good sound and picture quality throughout this historic collection. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Rogers and Hammerstein .......2007-05-13

This is an awesome collection. I ordered it for my Mom and she loved watching the movies. I definitely recommend it to anyone who loves these old movies. Incredible movies deserve all the praise I can give them.

this was a gift for a friend of mine. She says they are fantastic.

    4 out of 5 stars Classic Collection.......2007-04-12

This is a lovely set of classics to keep for those who either remember these movies, or who would like to be introduced to these all-time classics. Our only disappointment was that out of the 6 movies, only two were suitable for family entertainment (with our children) - The Sound of Music, and The King and I. It would have been nice to have one more to share with them, making it 3 family classics and 3 adult classics. Apart from that brief disappointment, my wife and I are happy with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the old time classics. For the music lover ... the music in these movies ... something to relish!

1 out of 5 stars Hey, Where is "Flower Drum Song?".......2006-03-01

This collection has a serious handicap in the omission of "Flower Drum Song." This gem is not available at all on DVD. What a loss to all.

Pleased that the collection of some of the most popular R&H movies was available. Look forward to viewing them all at my leisure.
