The Age of Aquarius is brought to life by the filmmaker who made Amadeus a household word. Milos Forman directed this version of James Rado, Gerome Ragni, and Galt MacDermot's landmark musical in 1979 between his Oscar-winning films One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Amadeus. With mixed reviews (Gene Siskel named it that year's best film) and lukewarm box-office grosses, the film all but disappeared from the collective consciousness. Yet the film beautifully delivers on its promise to bring the '60s back to life. Hair re-creates a colorful world of counterculture finding an anvil to pound on: the Vietnam War. Forman and his design team allow the film to wash over you, starting at the free-flowing opening in which masses of hippies, police, and even their horses eagerly groove to the familiar beat of "Aquarius." In the best work of his career, Treat Williams makes his leading- man debut as Berger, the leader of the Central Park troop who takes draftee Claude (John Savage) under his wing on his trip through New York City and the apex of what the '60s was. The new recording of the music is quite fine, with Chicago band member Don Dacus's rendition of the title song a highlight. As Berger's pièce de résistance number says, "I've Got Life"; so does the film, right down to its poignant declaration to "let the sunshine in." --Doug Thomas

Description

Brimming with the energy, passion and music that rocked a nation, Hair is an entertaining and powerful tribute to the turbulent spirit of the '60s. Brilliantly recreated by OscarÂ(r)-winning* director Milos Forman and screenwriter Michael Weller (Ragtime), this vibrant screen version of the Broadway phenomenon ranks "among the best film musicals" (The Hollywood Reporter)! Fresh from the farm, Claude Bukowski (John Savage, The Thin Red Line) arrives in New York City for a date with the Army Induction Board, only to walk into a hippie "happening" inCentral Park and fall in love with the beautiful Shelia (Beverly D'Angelo, American History X). Befriended by the hippies' pacifist leader, Berger (Treat Williams, Mulholland Falls), and urged to crash a formal party in order to declare his love for Shelia, Claude begins an adventure that lands him in jail, Central Park Lake and, finally, in the army. But Berger's final effort to save Claude from Vietnam sets in motion a bizarre twist of fate with shocking consequences. *1975: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest; 1984: Amadeus

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic musical!.......2007-06-24

This movie was upbeat and fast paced. An extremely interesting storyline taking place during an extremely interesting time period in America. The tunes were catchy and I recommend buying the original broadway soundtrack- you'll memorize every song before you know it :-P
I actually had to watch this movie for my Asian Religions class...it's amazing what intellectual insights you can gain from this movie!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2007-05-16

Even if you don't usually like musicals, like me, you should still like this one, it is one of my all time favorites. It has some classic songs in it, including "Easy to be Hard", one of the very few that we are forced to listen to at work that I actually like, here are the lyrics to it:

"How can people be so heartless
How can people be so cruel
Easy to be hard, easy to be cold

How can people have no feelings
How can they ignore their friends
Easy to be proud, easy to say no

{Refrain}
Especially people who care about strangers
Who care about evil and social injustice
Do you only care about bleeding crowd
How about a needing friend, I need a friend

How can people be so heartless
You know I'm hung up on you
Easy to be proud, easy to say no

{Refrain}

How can people be so heartless
How can people be so cruel
Easy to be proud, easy to say no
Easy to be cold, easy to say no
Come, on, easy to give in, easy to say no
Easy to be cold, easy to say no
Much too easy to say no

Lyrics by James Rado

It has a young Treat Williams and John Savage, the latter playing a country boy who goes to the big city before he is supposed to go in the military. He meets a bunch of cool hippies led by Treat's character. There are some other classic songs in it like "Aquarius" and "Good Morning Starshine". Glad to see it on DVD. A bit of trivia via IMBD, it was the highest grossing film in Hungary in 1980. You can watch the trailer there, too, at IMBD. This is a very entertaining film, check it out.

3 out of 5 stars Having acted Hair.. the movie seems too shallow.......2007-05-14

As a child of the 60's (1963) I never had the chance to see the plays that must have touched sensitive if not censored issues revolving around those days.. I had the chance of playing it in english here in Caracas in 1983 while in my early 20's.., by going ove the script and the music I got an appreciation for the depth of the play and its musical mastery!! well even in 1983 the director's decided to censor certain "nationalistic" questionings.. so I still hope that sometime I will get a full non-censured performance, is that too much to ask of life?

After this introduction I was excited on seeing the movie.. and what a disappointment, both musically as well as in performance.. and censored!!!! In the play we made people cry at Bergers death..in here, well see for yourself

5 out of 5 stars Musicals are back!!!.......2007-05-12

I recently took a trip to Utah, and saw Treat Williams in a local restaurant. Our host mentioned this movie that he was in..therefore I purchased it as a THANK YOU for our stay..she said she laughed her [...] off watching this movie..now I wished I had bought a copy for myself!

1 out of 5 stars Bad Hair Day.......2007-03-01

First off let me exclude Beverly D'Angelo from everything you are about to read. She is in my opinion one of if not the most talented actress/singers there ever was.....period! She is as always flawless. So here we go. As far as watching this movie ever again.....not if they held a gun to my head. Bad acting, bad directing, bad cinemetography, bad script, bad dance (can we call them dance) numbers, hense bad coreography, bad sound, bad politcal statement, in short a "Bad Hair Day"! A waste of film. Deserves to be in the dollar bin. Buy it and throw the DVD away and just keep the plastic box. It is the only thing in the package that has any value. A stinker!

5 out of 5 stars It's about time.......2007-06-18

Yes, that time has finally arrived, after over 2 decades, the original Twisted Sister Saturday Night concert originally broadcast on Mtv is finally gonna be released on dvd.

As a young teen being about 13-14 years old, I remember watching this concert on Mtv and I have never forgotten about it. I've seen it on ebay but did not want to vhs version, so I will be really glad when I get my paws on this dvd version that has been burned into my brain for the past 20+ years.

Some of you may think it sad, but it was TS that brought me into the world of music, what was called heavy metal at the time, then thrash, punk, country, americana and just all kinds of music in general, but to me Twisted Sister will always be one of the best and most exciting and influential bands in my life.

This dvd is truly better than I expected it to be. The individual performances by the band members and the overall sound quality was exceptional. I am an avid dvd music fan and collector. This one is now one of my favorites. This is a must get for Ted Nugent and Tommy Shaw fans. The other 2 band members are very good as well.... enjoy!!

This is what Rock N' Roll should sound nowadays, and not that lousy EMO, NU, whatever they wanna call it. Let's hope someone out there realizes before it's too late that we are already sick of Hip Hop and the so-called NU Metal that's out there.

4 out of 5 stars Damn Yankess.......2007-05-22

Very stimulating, live performance! The wide range exhibited by the band is nothing short of phenomenal! I STILL listen to this DVD years after seeing them live! Can't wait for the next tour!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic collection, a Must Buy.......2007-06-02

If you have the "Vault" cd then it's the exact same playlist. Overall a fantastic collection and should be one of the first video DVD's you pick up if your into 80's rock videos. Well worth the price, I'm very happy with it.

4 out of 5 stars Decent collection, Felt it missed a few videos, but still decent. Best US version.......2007-04-26

I Picked this up when it first came out, and was happy to have the heart of def leppard's videos on DVD. It contains their biggest hits and best videos. I know they couldn't fit every video on the disc, and I have their other two US DVDs of their older VHS tapes that cover some of the older material. This does contain "No Matter What" rehersal footage and video, which is cool and available only on this DVD. Saying this, I must say that I did buy the European Def Leppard Best Of DVD, which has 29 videos total on it, plus 3 hidden alternative videos. I paid more for that version, but I felt it was a better one stop shop for def leppard videos. But, I recommend this Rock Of Ages collection for most Leppard fans, it covers the biggest and best, and is more affordable/better value for a casual fan.

5 out of 5 stars Def Leppard.......2007-04-04

I like it. I like it! But, they spelled 'Deaf Leprechaun' rong!
If you like to ROCK, You'll Love to Rock w/ Def Leppard. ROCK - ON!
Hey, they've got something to say! But what's it got to do with hemoglobin?

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Collection by the Most Successful Hard Rock Band of All Time.......2007-01-17

No matter what anyone says about Led Zeppelin, AC/DC or even Motley Crue, there is no denying the blockbuster mega-success of Def Leppard under the tutelage of Mutt Lange with diamond record selling albums (do they still call them that?) Pyromania and Hysteria, and Rock of Ages showcases Def Leppard's and Mutt Lange's great songwriting talents splendidly. Every tune is a gem, from the obvious Photograph and Pour Some Sugar on Me to the lesser known (but still amazing) Two Steps Behind, Promises, and When Love and Hate Collide. If there ever was a desert island disc, Rock of Ages is it. This is easily the best hard rock set ever compiled.

Barbie as Rapunzel will thrill children aged 3 to 8, following the success of Barbie in the Nutcracker. Barbie may have started life as a doll in the 1950s, but these days she's also making her name as a computer-animated film star. In a modern twist on the classic fairy tale, Barbie stars as Rapunzel--a courageous and imaginative princess who is locked away in a tower by the evil witch Gothel. With help from her friends (Penelope the cute purple dragon and Hobie the rabbit) and through the power of her own creative energies, she paints her way out of the tower to find freedom, truth, and love.

Anjelica Huston is memorable as the vocal talent behind the unbalanced and scary Gothel, and excellent sound effects and colors greatly enhance the film. Hugo the mighty dragon, Otto the nasty ferret, and the sword fight between the feuding kings will hold the attention of those brothers of Barbie fans who are less than enthusiastic about watching this 80-minute film, but essentially this is a little girls' film and the outrageously pink castle, the magical fashion show before the masked ball, and the fairy-tale wedding will make it a firm favorite for that audience. --Tracey Hogan

Description

Long, long ago, in a time of magic and dragons, there lived a girl named Rapunzel who had the most beautiful radiant hair the world had ever seen. But Rapunzel's life was far from wonderful. She lived as a servant to Gothel, a jealous, scheming witch who kept her hidden deep in a forbidding forest, guarded by the enormous dragon Hugo and surrounded by an enchanted glass wall.

However, in a twist of fate, Rapunzel's discovery of a magic paintbrush leads her on a journey that will unravel a web of deception, bring peace to two feuding kingdoms, and ultimately lead her to love with the help of Penelope(TM), the least intimidating of dragons!

Stunningly produced in computer animation, the movie stars Academy Award(R) - Anjelica Huston* as Gothel and Cree Summer as Penelope(TM). The movie features a song by Samantha Mumba and music by the London Symphony Orchestra.

Barbie(TM) as Rapunzel shows that love and imagination can change the world...

4 out of 5 stars My kids love it.......2007-06-26

The animation is not always perfect with arms at odd lengths and angles but the color is beautiful. My girls ages 2 and 5 love all the Barbie movies. Just don't expect it to be anything like the original story. She has long hair and there is a tower but that is it! :D

5 out of 5 stars surprised and impressed.......2007-06-19

I am not a huge Barbie fan. My 5 year old daughter does not own any Barbie dolls. She asked to rent this movie from the library. I agreed on the condition that we would watch it together and turn it off if I took objection to it in any way. I was very surprised to find it a delightful retelling of this fairy tale. I love the way it emphasized many virtues such as kindness, compassion, and honesty. My daughter LOVED it. My favorite parts of the dvd were the bonus features. One feature interviews a 19 year old girl who is a professional artist. It shows her painting in her studio as well as teaching an art class for young girls and preparing to show her work at a gallery. It is excellent and inspiring. Another bonus feature is an interactive game that asks viewers to help Barbie decorate the castle by hanging paintings. She describes a painting and the viewer must select the described painting from a grouping of three or four. When the correct painting is chosen, Barbie gives more info. about the famous artwork including technique and history...really great! Not only will your child probably love this video...she might actually learn something, too!

5 out of 5 stars Good deal !.......2007-05-23

My dauhter enjoyed the birbie as Rapunzel a lot. She has fairytopia, but I think this story is better than fairytopia and It's good deal.

4 out of 5 stars A Magic Paintbrush That Can Defeat a Witch.......2007-03-10

This film, as advertised, had excellent visual scenes. The forest moves in a rapid blur. Purple-colored dragons fly naturally through the air. When Rapunzel touches her magic paintbrush to a canvas, live scenes appear magically and vividly. When Gothel the witch uses her evil powers, a tornado of destructive activity makes this obvious.

Rapunzel had been kidnapped, and her father, a king, mistakenly blamed another king for it. This led to a long spell of enmity between the two kings, one of whom was named King Wilhelm. No one suspected that it was the witch Gothel who had kidnapped Rapunzel long ago.

Gothel treats Rapunzel like a slave, making her do one chore after another. Gothel makes Rapunzel feel that the witch has done her a big favor by raising her. Rapunzel loves to paint, but Gothel disparages her for this, accusing her of wasting her time. At one point, Gothel uses her magic powers to rip Rapunzel's paintings to shreds.

Rapunzel discovers a magic paintbrush. It makes scenes happen the moment that she thinks of them and touches the canvas. She uses her magic paintbrush to leave the castle, and she meets Prince Stefan. He develops an immediate liking for her. At one point, when wanting a beautiful dress to wear to the ball, she imagines the dress, touches the magic paintbrush to the canvas, and not only sees the dress but also can wear it.

In time, Gothel learns that Rapunzel has a suitor, and is furious about it. As in other fairy tales, the protagonist wants to go to a ball. Prince Stefan, the son of the king falsely accused of having kidnapped Rapunzel, goes there to meet Rapunzel. He encounters Gothel instead. She uses her powers to sting him. Meanwhile, Rapunzel is trapped in a castle tower, forever held in bondage by Gothel's spell. However, there is a way to break the spell, as it does not work on those who are free from dishonesty. Will Rapunzel be able to break the spell and to meet Prince Stefan at the ball? Will the kings learn who actually had kidnapped Rapunzel long ago? Will wicked witch Gothel become trapped as a result of her own dishonesty? I will not spoil the ending by revealing it.

5 out of 5 stars Best Motley Crue DVD Ever.......2007-03-24

I have never really been impressed with concert DVD's but this one is awesome!!! I don't understand the people who give it a bad reveiw. Granted I don't like all the F-word usage,Tommy's solo,or the Boobie Cam,but I just skip them. Aside from those this is truly an awsome DVD. If I don't watch it, I listen to it ,just about every day. Vinces voice is one of a kind. Tommy,Nikki,& Mic all give a Great show too! The theme is interesting and the whole show keeps you entertained. The extra's are cool too. I like watching the band talk with there fans,& the groups Individual reveiwes of the concert. It is really cool. Motley Crue really puts on a show for their Fans! I own about 30 Music DVD's and this is the only one so far that I really enjoy! It is well worth the money. My whole family loves this DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Nikki is friggin` hot.......2006-10-23

This performance is top notch, but the DVD lacks a bit, especially the sound. It`s hard to hear the singing and the instruments through all the noice from the audience. On a normal TV set without additional speakers, the sound is horrible. You`ll have to do quite a bit of tuning to get the sound right, and that may be too complicated for some. The easiest way is to just use headphones, that seemed to work fine. Having said that, the performance is sooo great. The first time i watched it, I thought they had added Vince`s voice later, it was simply too good to be true. Having watched it several times, I am certain that there is no lip sync in there. It is really Vince there, all the time, all the way. And man, can he sing

5 out of 5 stars Great, Fun DVD.......2006-09-10

I love this DVD. I watch it all the time. Sometimes I just put it on and play it while I'm doing other things around the house but most of the time I'll stop what I'm doing and sit down and watch the rest. It's not about nitpicking every little thing in the DVD. Personally I think the vocals are pretty good. Vince sings in tune, hitting all the high notes. Does he get ever word in there perfectly, no, but as a performer myself I understand how out of breath you can get on stage. Compared to the way Axle sings in their live DVD, Vince is golden. There are a couple part I skip through: the Nikki and Tommy solos, They are talent guys but I'm not too into experimental music. The Boobie Cam is old after you've seen it once. I mean, come on, how many times can you see the same girls show off their fake boobs? I don't care how much you like boobs it's not that great. Those are the only negative points of the entire DVD though. They play a ton of great songs, the stage is cool, the performance is good and you can watch it over and over and just have fun. that's what it's really all about.

2 out of 5 stars I agree with skymac2's review.......2006-08-30

I agree 110% with Skymack2's review on this Motley Crew DVD. He put every aspect into perfect perspective. It sucks! Shame on these guys for taking our money. The Band should have watched it themselves first. I have a very high end AV system and this DVD sounds horrible.

If you're reading this, there are actually only two options
*You may be a long time crue fan (as I am)
*You may be just curious
In the first case, do yourself a favour, stop reading this $%%# and get this dvd.Soon.Now.
In the second case, well, Motley Crue can't be told.
You have to see them. And hear them.
Since the Sunset Strip days, they followed one simple, basic rule, on and off stage : no hesitation.
And in 2006, these four bottles of expansive wines are just gettin' better and better.
They deliver today the best rock n' roll show around, and I mean rock n' roll : no compromise, loud, excessive, funny and psichotic.
They don't play the role, they're not tryin' to fool anyone with so-called deep message, they don't follow trends because they ARE trend-makers since 1981.
So all that remains is pure adrenalin rush all along the concert.
With a rhitm section wich would move a rocketship, a classic style guitar man wich blends bluesy and slide bits with metal and punk attitude, a frontman who just can hold an entire arena on the palm of his hand...
Everyone of them, picked one by one, it's a show itself..
See Nikki as the master of mahyem, biting fan's fingers while literally knockin' his bass strings to produce earthquaking lines that are the spine of crue sound...
See Mick kickin' away the pain with the medicine magic of his guitar...
See Vince who sings from the soul, and proves that he can be the only one who can share the stage with the other guys..
And what the heck...Tommy on drums : true , unstoppable force of the nature..the best rock drummer ever...you see him, you name it...
Living in Italy, I didn't had many chances to see them live, so this dvd's like a blessing fo me.
I was in the first row in 1989, Dr. Feelgood tour, in Milan, and I can tell you, the energy and attitude are the same,
may be even better...
Don't be a clown...use it before you lose it.

When "liberators" don't understand the country they're trying to help, the end result can be well meaning, but diluted. In the documentary The Beauty Academy of Kabul, filmmaker Liz Mermin focuses on a group of American hair stylists who travel to post-Taliban Afghanistan to teach local women how to beautify themselves and their customers. Though well-intentioned and enthusiastic, many of the Westerners come across as clueless and thoughtless. Looking at a group of women eager to pick up some styling tips, an Indiana hairdresser admonishes them for looking plain and demands to know why they're not wearing makeup. She seems to have no idea that until recently, these women were covered head to toe in burkas. Another American stylist says to her translator, "It seems to me some of these women are fearful of their husbands. Why?" And yet another seems disappointed when her class makes no notice of her declaration that Frederic Fekkai--the famed hairdresser to the stars--personally donated the scissors they're using. Mermin would've done better to focus less on the Americans and more on the Afghani women, many of whom have heartbreaking stories to tell. One, who got married at 14, notes, "Men and women should be equal." Another young student likes the idea of marrying a man she falls in love with, but pragmatically points out, "If a guy can fall in love with you, he can fall in love with someone else, too." It is these women who carry the story. And it is these women whose stories should've been delved into more. --Jae-Ha Kim

Description

An arresting and optimistic portrait of post-Taliban Afghanistan, the theatrical hit THE BEAUTY ACADEMY OF KABUL captures the wonderfully odd circumstances that bring Afghan and American women together in pursuit of physical beauty and much more. In this utterly unique film, a quirky gaggle of Western hairstylists, including Afghan-American women, armed with blow driers and designer scissors, improbably opens a school to teach eager Afghan women the high art of fixing hair. Torn by decades of war and oppression, the women of Kabul embrace perm rods and mascara with unbridled hope even as they candidly recall the horrors of burkas and bombs. Both humorous and slyly subversive, the film offers poignant moments of culture clash between the Americans and Afghans and touching moments of feminine solidarity. Eschewing the trivial, THE BEAUTY ACADEMY OF KABUL innovatively renders the odd story of international goodwill through hair care in exquisitely humane terms.

4 out of 5 stars Hairdressers out from hiding . . ........2007-04-25

This revealing and sometimes amusing documentary follows the efforts of several western women to open a beauty school in Kabul, Afghanistan, in the days following the fall of the Taliban regime. Here the feminist assumptions of the school's instructors collide with the realities of life for women in a more traditional, male-dominated Islamic culture.

The filmmakers have been invited into the homes of some of these women and we learn a great deal about their values and aspirations, as well as what is expected of them. When a young single woman reveals that she is "in love" with a young man, she makes the filmmaker promise not to tell her mother, who would strongly disapprove. A married woman speaks of living through the reign of Taliban terror that kept women house-bound, and another describes secretly working as a hairdresser during those years in her home - in defiance of the law. The beauty school instructors may make you cringe, but you'll admire their students.

5 out of 5 stars I shall be released.......2007-01-31

This short documentary works for me on several levels.

Taking it at face value, an international group of hairdressers, American, British and Afghani establish a Beauty School in Kabul, to restore an institution which had been targeted for destruction and outlawed by the Taliban regime. It is a story which can be construed as amerikan imperialism, introducing a capitalistic, secular business in the capital city of Kabul a feat which is only possible because of the security of NATO troops in the city. However, it becomes clear from some of the cameos of the students that hairstyling and makeup were underground activities that many women were demanding even under the threat of beheadings and the more extreme punishments available under Sharia. Throughout the film there is the juxtaposition of images of beauty and sisterhood with those of armed men looking on with considerable bemusement.

On another level though, the film raises as many questions as answers. One is struck by the admission of one refugee to America of her feelings of guilt after leaving her homeland, that she did nothing to help her abandoned Afghani "sisters" in the series of struggles which beset her native country. What sort of society did exist in Afghanistan before the Russian invasion? We know that there was some sort of monarchy which, following a coup, became some sort of republic. Did it meet the George Bush Jr. test of a democracy? Then came the Russian invasion and the establishment of the jihadist movement, finance and armed by the US and led by one Osama bin Laden. Did the CIA know or even suspect that this would lead to the establishment of a particular type of an Islamic Republic led by the Taliban?

On a human level, it is clear from the level of interest of ordinary Afghan women that beauty and makeup are things that they are interested in but they must bow to the wishes of their husbands and families who may not approve of their use of make up or different hair styles. While not wishing to tread in or on the footsteps of feminists here, I for one, believe that it is an inalienable right of every person to have self-determination.

This little film deserves much wider attention than it has received. I heartily recommend it to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars feminist liberation or cultural imperialism?.......2007-01-26

In 2003 six American hairdressers opened a beauty school in the bombed out ruins of post-Taliban Kabul. Director Liz Mermin follows this venture from the grand opening and selection of the first class to the graduation dinner three months later. Two of the volunteers, Sima and Shaima, had emigrated from Afghanistan to the United States more than twenty years earlier, and their cultural reconnection is emotionally powerful. "It's been twenty years since I was here," observes Sima, "but the country has regressed a hundred years." Two other volunteers are positively obnoxious; they cannot understand why these Afghan women would not wear makeup, drive, or anger their husbands. One of them begins classes with yoga meditation as the Afghan women giggle. Another gushes that their project is not just about hair and makeup but about "healing the country." The real heroes that make this film worth watching, though, are the Afghan women. "Our men have backwards mentalities," one of them laments. I found the symbolism of a beauty parlor run by culturally insensitive American do-gooders in a conservative Muslim country rich with paradox. Was this project one of genuine feminist liberation or self-congratulatory cultural imperialism? A little of both, I thought. In English and Afghan.

4 out of 5 stars worth viewing.......2007-01-11

Not withstanding the vanity of the western women, this is a poignant, agenda-less film that documents the gap between the east and west, and the modest aspirations of Afghani women to show their visage in public.

This movie is certainly interesting in demonstrating the chasm between between eastern and western feminine mores. Nothing like a bunch of dead family members to cement a reluctance to adopt western fashion. Certainly the chasm is so substantial that its hard to fathom that a term such as "love marriage" exists on this planet, but there it is. And the flakiness that is celebrated in the west as "diversity" and "enlightenment" is exposed in this film for its weirdness. Afghani society is not so tolerant of behavior that is outside the lines.

If nothing else, we have a misinterpretation of gaps; we have westerners hoping to cross decades of difference when the gap is centuries. And yet the resilient women of Kabul, some who have never known peace know that they are right and that the battle is not a matter how but when. This is not a story with dramatic twists or stunning turns, but a modest story of cowed women taking modest steps to assert themselves in a society that suddenly stopped caring what women had to say and only now minimally willing to consider their contribution. It is a moving story of small acts of courage in the face of cultural retardation.

3 out of 5 stars ...and ugly goes right to the bone........2006-10-16

"The Beauty Academy of Kabul" is a documentary about a group of American women hairdressers who travel to Kabul to teach hairdressing to Afghani women in the post-Taliban era. The film has many positives, mainly its interviews with the women students. Surprisingly, many seem cheerful. A few talk about the war or the Taliban. But against the backdrop of bombed out buildings and ruined villas, their laughter is obviously a defense against unbearable inner pain. The glimpses of their lives -- the houses they live in, the music they listen to, the images they watch and the structure of their families -- is priceless.

While I admire the Americans for their act of kindness, it becomes clear early on that they are almost completely insensitive to the mores of the Afghanis. The students, first of all, are survivors of a brutal regime in a male-dominated, Islamic society. Under the Taliban, many risked punishment to run beauty salons out their own homes. To hear these women being lectured by know-it-all Americans was ghastly. Almost to a person, the Americans were arrogant and insensitive. One woman figured she would single-handedly "liberate" the streets by driving a car -- unheard of in that country. The stares and glares she received did not seem to faze her. Another woman engaged the students in pre-class meditation -- something that must have seemed bizarre (and faintly heretical!) to these Muslim women. Most of the teachers treated their students as rookies -- unmoved that they had been working in the business for years and years. Overall, the Afghani women were serious, devout, family-oriented workaholics. The Americans -- beauty-obsessed, swinging singles and into New Age religion if any at all -- epitomized the stereotype that Americans are loud, brash, disconnected and uncaring.

This was not a feel-good story about cultures learning from one another. It was a story about one culture enduring the rudeness of another in return for advancing its own agenda. It's not clear whether the filmmakers were aware of how awful their subjects looked. It's not clear that they realized the horrific rudeness that was being recorded. Anyway, horrors and all, "The Beauty Academy Of Kabul" could have been a great film had it bothered to ask a few questions, such as, Now that the Americans have left, are you glad they came? What did you think of them? Does meeting them make you more or less receptive to Western values? And so on. It was a major shortcoming that the film left these questions unexpressed. Still, the value of a glimpse into real life in an alien culture was quote worthwhile.

4 out of 5 stars Great Band, Good DVD.......2007-06-08

I'm glad to have puchased this DVD for one main reason -- concert footage from 2006 for their latest album, "Warrior Soul."

This DVD contains 3 major items on 2 discs. The first item on disc 1 is 90 minutes of concert footage from their European tour for the "Warrior Soul" album. It's really cool to see them play songs from the newest album, in addition to their popular classics, with a couple other tunes thrown in. The songs are played in their entirety, but video footage from other shows are mixed into most songs. The timing is perfect, but it can be annoying because they overdo it. It's OK, though. I think it would have been better to show them play an enire song at one venue, then show them play the next song at another venue, rather than mixing it all together. Similarly, they add slow motion to a few videos for effect, but at the wrong time (like the guitarist is wailing away at a solo, but it shows him in slow motion). Because of the edited video clips thown in and the video effects not really put in the right spots, I think the video production company must not have much experience in producing music videos. Even so, I really enjoyed seeing the band play the new songs on video finally and they are all great songs. Another great feature is the band members telling the viewer between songs about the tour as they go from city to city. Doro does most of the discussions, which in her case are in German, but there are English subtitles for all but one of her segments. The other guys (except for Oli) speak in English because they are American. Related to that, there is a lot of behind-the-scences footage. Awesome.

The second item on disc 1 is 91 minutes of edited footage from a special concert from 2003 in celebration of Doro's 20th anniversary of being in the music business. It's too bad it took them 4 years to put out this footage because it feels a bit dated since they don't play any new songs. It's great to have now, nonetheless. This section of the DVD is great because of 2 things -- the guest musicians and a few songs that didn't appear on the "Für Immer" cave concert DVD. There were several exciting things to see here, including appearances from Udo Dirkschneider (lead singer from Accept) and two guys from Motorhead. Udo helped out on "East Meets West," adding his classic Accept screeching growls to the songs. Have you ever bought a music CD for just 1 song? Well, you should buy this DVD just to see Lemmy Kilmister and Mikkey Dee from Motorhead and Doro and her band play Motorhead's "Love Me Forever." It's such an awesome song. Motorhead is an acquired taste, but Lemmy and Doro do a great duet here. Awesome. Another great feature worth having is the reunion song with Doro and the original guys from Warlock. They play "Fight for Rock," which I think might have been one of their first hits and music videos to appear in the U.S. (though it's from their 3rd album). Cool. Another great song to see in this concert is Doro's version of Dio's "Egypt - The Chains Are On." They do a great job, and I like this version better than the original. There are other guest musicians, but the ones I mentioned were the best. The rest of this section of the DVD contains brief congratulations between songs to Doro from various rock stars in metal we all know and her boxer buddy Regina Halmich. The only thing I didn't like about his section of the DVD was that they cut-away to the next thing when the band was halfway through "Unholy Love;" so we only see them play half of that song. The rest of the songs are shown all the way through.

Disc 2 contains the entire 2003 anniversary concert. Get some popcorn and something to drink, get comfortable, and set aside some time because the concert is 3 hours long.

This is a great DVD, but I gave it 4 stars because I was a little turned off by the video editing for the "Warrior Soul" concert footage. I think I'm a little too much of a perfectionist, though. You might not care about those things which I considered problems, in which case this is a 5 star DVD.

It is interesting to compare "the cave concert" from the "Für Immer" DVD to the anniversary concert on this DVD because they occured in the same tour/year. I liked the cave concert better -- the atmosphere was just cool. However -- and this is important -- the audio mixing for the concerts on this DVD are much better because the vocals and music are at the same levels and you can hear the background vocals. On the "Für Immer" DVD, Doro's vocals were much louder than the music and you couldn't (or barely) hear the background vocals, which I think were important on several songs.

I highly recommend this DVD, and I'd like to show it to my friends who don't know about this band. The packaging is great, with lots of photos in the liner notes booklet, and the 2 DVDs are in separate holders, unlike the "Für Immer" DVDs, which were stacked on top of each other, causing the screen printing on the lower DVD to scratch the play side of other.

Man, I really want to give this DVD 5 stars.

This fascinating comedy questions what we mean when we use words like "nature" and "civilization." Lila (Patricia Arquette, Lost Highway, True Romance), a nature writer who grows hair all over her body, falls in love with Nathan (Tim Robbins, The Player, The Hudsucker Proxy), a scientist attempting to teach table manners to mice. While hiking in the woods, they discover Puff (Rhys Ifans, Notting Hill), a man raised in the wild since childhood, whom Nathan seizes as a test subject for his experiments--and soon these three, along with Nathan's French lab assistant (Miranda Otto) are embroiled in criss-crossed love affairs as they (and the audience) attempt to figure out what it means to be true to one's own nature. Though Human Nature isn't as surefooted as Being John Malkovich (which was also written by distinctive screenwriter Charlie Kaufman), it has moments of startling comic genius. --Bret Fetzer

1 out of 5 stars You Have Got To Be Kidding!.......2007-04-05

I like weird movies, I like bad movies. But I do not like TERRIBLE movies, and that is what you have here.
The plot if there is one sounds like it was made up while two guys were in a druken stuper. The acting is terrible, and there is NO entertainment value what so ever. Can we give it a minus 1?

5 out of 5 stars Are we moving forward or backward?.......2007-04-03

Males outwardly act to build a "civilization" based on repressing urges, secretly yearn to return to nature, yet ultimately do whatever it takes to bag some tail. Best line: "As you say in the vernacular, I want me some of that."

Females fight against nature tooth-and-nail (think cosmetics industry), and ultimately "sell their soul" to land a relationship (and the requisite baby).

Sounds pretty cynical, yet accurate, doesn't it? I don't think the human species, or any species at that, has ever made it far without a healthy prioritization of sex. What this movie does, however, is attempt to peel back the veneer we have painted upon ourselves.

I had this movie on my "to watch" list, but forgot why it was there. Shortly into it, I got weirded-out by the imagery and matter-of-fact treatment of some pretty ludicrous scenes. I thought, "Is this a joke?" I stuck with it and only during the end credits did I realize it was Michel Gondry and Spike Jonze flick, and a Charlie Kaufmann Freudian-tinged script.

I'm sure there's much to this movie that I am missing (What is the meaning of the scientist's new little brother? Where exactly is the white room?). I'm purposely writing this review before reading any other reviews or analysis at all, so I can't pretend that I figured out all the metaphor and simile on my own. Maybe the movie demands a second viewing? Or maybe, like good art, the movie is only a conduit by which we find the answers within ourselves. That sounded good, huh?

1 out of 5 stars Do I have to give it even 1 star? :-(.......2006-09-15

A truly awful, abysmal movie, its only redeeming quality is its ability to make me fall into deep slumber. Everyone is awful in it. One only wonders if actors really have no options in the jobs they take.

Stupid, tasteless, boring, asinine. Not worth any more thought.

3 out of 5 stars People are Strange.......2006-08-15

I have to admit, I had really high hopes for this movie. Made by Charlie Kaufman and Michel Gondry, the same writer/director team that worked together on one of my favorite movies ('Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'), and featuring Rhys Ifans and Miranda Otto, who were so good together in another favorite of mine ('Danny Deckchair'), I figured I had good reason to get excited about this. While I was not completely disappointed, it should be said that 'Human Nature' was something of a letdown for me.

At least it's original. 'Human Nature' is the story of four people who come together through some pretty unique circumstances. Tim Robbins is a scientist trying to teach table manners to mice, as the result of an interesting set of neuroses. Patricia Arquette, cursed since puberty with out-of-control body hair, plays Robbins' girlfriend and eventual assistant. Rhys Ifans is the scruffy man who was raised as an ape in the wild. And rounding out the list is Miranda Otto, the cute French lab assistant who has bigger dreams and naughtier intentions. Nobody in the film, of course, is quite what they seem or what they wish to be, and as the story progresses they all interact in different (often surprising!) ways. At the very least, the story will keep your attention to see what happens next.

Hilary Duff fans, take note...she appears for maybe 30 seconds in 'Human Nature' as a young (teenage) Patricia Arquette, when she first discovers her hair growth. It was a surprising appearance if you're not expecting it (I wasn't), but nothing to get excited about if you're a fan.

'Human Nature' has its funny moments, and its sad moments, and many that are an odd mixture of both. As Robbins and Arquette first find the man-ape Ifans, their ideas of his situation are completely opposite: Robbins wants to re-train the apeman to be a refined and dignified gentleman, while Arquette wants to let him explore his freedom. Otto's French lab assistant's motives aren't ever really clear, except for the idea that she's mostly looking out for herself. The thematic question becomes obvious: which is the 'true' nature of humanity? Is humanity defined by it's ability to rise above the base animal instinct and be civilized, or is it preferable to free the beast within us and live as we wish? The film provides no ready answer to this, but does give you the chance to explore the ideas of it.

There's nothing specific I found disappointing about the movie, just a general feeling that at some point it got so strange that it lost me. Was it Patricia Arquette's oddly-placed nude (well, sort of) singing scene? Was it Miranda Otto's questionable French heritage? Rhys Ifans getting shocked over and over for his natural reaction to seeing a naked woman? Probably, it was the overall effect of all of these things, and others like them. Taken all together, I never felt like the movie found its direction. It's not so much that it lost me...just that it never really found me in the first place.

I like some pretty oddball movies sometimes, but 'Human Nature' might be just a little over the line even for me. It's funny, it's got some good performances, and it's definitely an original. My overall impression in the end, though, is that it's just... strange.

    Perhaps that's the point.

4 out of 5 stars Weird, Different, but Interesting!! VERY ORIGINAL MOVIE!!.......2006-01-29

Charlie Kaufman may be the most original writer for screenplays in HOLLYWOOD, having contributed to weird movies such as Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, Adaptation and Human Nature, HUMAN NATURE Plot: Take a beautiful girl (Patricia Arquette) with a condition of extreme hair growth that grows all over her body, decides she hates humanity because of all the abuse she gets from being different.
