When Julie Andrews sang "The hills are alive with the sound of music" from an Austrian mountaintop in 1965, the most beloved movie musical was born. To be sure, the adaptation of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's Broadway hit has never been as universally acclaimed as, say, Singin' in the Rain. Critics argue that the songs are saccharine (even the songwriters regretted the line "To sing through the night like a lark who is learning to pray") and that the characters and plot lack the complexity that could make them more interesting. It's not hard to know whom to root for when your choice is between cute kids and Nazis.

Charmian Carr, who played
Liesl von Trapp in The
Sound of Music. |
It doesn't matter. Audiences fell in love with the struggling novice Maria (Andrews), the dashing Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), and, yes, the cute kids, all based on a real-life World War II Austrian family. Such songs as "My Favorite Things," "Do Re Mi," "Climb Every Mountain," and the title tune became part of the 20th century Zeitgeist. In addition, The Sound of Music officially became a cult hit when audiences in London began giving it the Rocky Horror Picture Show treatment, attending showings dressed as their favorite characters and delivering choreographed comments and gestures along with the movie. So why resist, especially when the 40th Anniversary Edition is the best DVD yet.
The DVDs
As if the direct involvement of Julie Andrews weren't enough, the 40th Anniversary Edition of The Sound of Music is a must-have for fans because of the fond sense of nostalgia that will touch all but the worst cynic's heart. Andrews introduces both discs and contributes a commentary track on the film. It's a joy to hear her speak about the film (for example, she explains how she solved her dislike for the lyrics of "I Have Confidence"), and also heard are remarks by Christopher Plummer (who at one point refers to his being 48, which if true would mean his comments were made in about 1975), Charmian Carr (Liesl), choreographer Dee Dee Wood, and Johannes Von Trapp (the real-life Maria Von Trapp's youngest son, who admits that his father did have a whistle but claims that he was not as stern as portrayed in the film). Even with all those people involved, there are still significant gaps of silence, however. Retained from the previous two-disc editions is the commentary track by director Robert Wise, which during the musical numbers becomes an isolated score with no vocals. Also new are sing-along subtitles in English, Spanish, and French, which allow you to have your own sing-along at home. In addition, the film's remastering shows off a truer and much warmer sense of color.
On the second disc, Andrews participates in a new 63-minute documentary "My Favorite Things: Julie Andrews Remembers." But it's really a general making-of documentary with contributions from a number of principals, including director Robert Wise, who died in mid-2005 (not surprisingly, some stories are repeated from the commentary track and from the 87-minute documentary on the previous DVD). Andrews also shares a warm 19-minute sit-down with Christopher Plummer. Carr, who over the years has become the film's biggest advocate, narrates a new 22-minute documentary, "On Location with The Sound of Music," in which she revisits the places in Salzburg where the movie was filmed, and even joins one of the "Sound of Music tours" that have become a booming industry. And acknowledging another big industry, there's a 12-minute featurette on the sing-along phenomenon, focusing specifically on the audience, costumed and otherwise, that attended a sold-out Hollywood Bowl sing-along in 2005. Making special appearances at the event are four von Trapp great-grandchildren and all seven of the actors who played the children. Thankfully, those actors also appear in a 33-minute documentary "From Liesl to Gretl: A 40th Anniversary Reunion," in which they explain what they do now (many are still in show business) and share stories about the film, who was afraid of Christopher Plummer, and what they feel is their responsibility to the film's passionate fans. What's touching is how the group still considers themselves a family so many years later. Other material includes an A&E documentary on the von Trapps, Mia Farrow's screen test for the Liesl role, and a restoration comparison.
What's Missing?
If you already own the previous two-disc editions, you'll want this 40th Anniversary Edition as well, but you might not want to toss those versions. Probably the most significant omission from this edition is the original 14-minute documentary Charmian Carr made in 1967, "Salzburg Sight and Sound." Carr's new documentary includes only a couple clips from the vintage piece. It's not a great work of art, but it's a notable loss and would have made a good contrast with the new documentary. In addition, the new making-of documentary is about 24 minutes shorter than the old one. Also missing are the audio-only features--the interviews, the radio programs, the Ernest Lehman spotlight--and the historical still gallery examining the history of Salzburg and the film. Granted, this material probably got the least play of any of the old features, but completists might want to hold onto their old discs for it. It would have also been nice to have screen tests other than Farrow's. Tests for all the children and for Christopher Plummer (including singing in his own voice before he was dubbed for the film) were included on Hollywood Screen Tests and Rodgers and Hammerstein: The Sound of Movies. Again, they're not critical but it would have been nice to have them all in one place. So maybe the 40th Anniversary Edition isn't the complete package on The Sound of Music, but it's the most satisfying edition yet, with enough new material to please even the veteran SoM DVD watcher. --David Horiuchi

The Sound of Music.......2007-07-02
Shot in pristine color on location near Salzburg--and featuring that dizzying opening shot of Maria belting out the title tune from a verdant hilltop--"Music" fully deserves its reputation as one of the most popular films of all time. The daisy-fresh Andrews is simply terrific, whether she's acting or singing, and the songs--"Do Re Mi," "Climb Every Mountain," and "My Favorite Things"--have become part of our cultural heritage. Adapted from the Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway play, the film might be a bit schmaltzy at moments, but in all, it remains utterly irresistible. The hills are still alive--and your singing pipes will be too--with the wondrous "Sound of Music."
the magic is alive..........2007-06-26
I was only six but I still remember when my mother took us kids to the movies to see 'The Sound of Music'. A memory permantly ingrained as is this film. From the most amazing opening shot ever filmed this classic film never lets go of yor senses. It's fun, thrilling and holds up extremely well. Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer are exquisite. Sure some of the lyrics are corny and simple but it all works and I'm not even a fan of musicals.
Pure Magic.......2007-06-25
Who doesn't know the general plot of this movie? Well just in case: Maria is thinking of becoming a nun, yet Sister Superior isn't so sure about that and sends her off to become the governess to seven Von Trapp children. There she meets the very strict father and the not so angelic children. She quickly wins over the children and their father. While all this is going on the Nazis are slowly but surely taking over the country. By the second half of the movie they become a true family and decide to make a dareing escape from the Nazis.
Now that pretty much wraps it up plot wise, yet there is so much more. The songs are very sugar coated but so what? They are there for a purpose: teaching children to not be afraid, coaching them on how to sing, etc. In most parts they are there for the pleasure of the young and the young at heart.
I'll close with an example. I was driving with my wife and our girls in the car, and we were looking at about an hour trip to my mother's house so we popped The Sound of Music in the DVD and we were on our way. As I heard (I coudn't see the movie of course) the movie and we sang the songs on our journey, I looked back and every face was smiling. Now if you are looking for a movie like that you've come to the right place.
The Sound of Music .......2007-06-11
A Family Night is made of... Sound of Music. Worth watching over and over.
saw it as a child and now at my 40s.. it still holds the magic.......2007-06-05
This review is about the movie and not the DVD Product-
I saw it yesterday, Im 43, last time I saw ir I was 28 and prior to that I was 12 the first time I saw it. It still holds the magic, and now I can say its a classic for all the family.
Yes, now I see details I previously did no see. The plot is so idillic that you don't feel the nazi presence inspiring fear, the love scenes are a perfect example of puritanism and political correctness. Yet there is love and there Julie Andrews gives a performance larger than life to captivate all public.
I do not know why in the review preface there is some critisims of the lyrics of the song "Sound of music"- those were elaborated lyrics and none of that senseless rap or overly simplistic lyrics. Sugarcoated? You bet, but just like the pinl lemonade they were sipping on the terrace, "its not too sweet, not too acid, its just too pink "
The movie has an ending that is rather sudden, just as it starts with that glorious song it should have ended with one as well, a triumph song. I still have the same feeling I did when I was 12, what happened to them?

It's called "the Mozart Effect," the notion that exposing youngsters to the melodies of the maestro can improve verbal ability, spatial intelligence, creativity, and memory. It's a pretty big leap of faith to understand that effect unless you personally see a toddler react to the stimulation. The Baby Einstein folks have a series of tapes (Baby Einstein, Baby Bach) that add visual stimulation to the bouncy recordings (using vibraphone, Rhodes electric piano, and even a glockenspiel). The melodies are heard against colorful imagery of spinning tops, wave machines, soft baby toys, mobiles, and the like. Several parenting groups and magazines have heralded the tapes for children 1 to 36 months, but the Orwellian aspect of introducing babes in arms to the TV screen may cause many to just pick up the CD. --Doug Thomas

Baby Einstein is a wonderful new line of videos to aid in your child's development. Get them off to a new start with these videos, and this special one, Baby Mozart. Get them well on the way to a successful future now! Don't wait!
Baby Einstein is a Scam.......2007-05-27
Be a genius, don't fall for the alluring proposition that this will make you child any more cultured or intelligent. There are no studies or otherwise to prove anything that these videos claim.
"The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) does not recommend television for children younger than two years of age." - [...]
"The baby video industry is a scam. There's no evidence that the videos are educational for babies, and a review of the research on babies and videos concludes that while older babies can imitate simple actions from a video they've seen several times, they learn much more rapidly from real life."
-Harvard Medical School psychologist Susan Lynn
safest buy of the series.......2007-05-22
This is the first one we got and 10-month old daughter has been watching this one since she was 2 or 3 months, and still loves it. I'd say either this, or the Baby Monet, is her favorite of the BE DVDs. The "choreography" is spectacular; for instance, during the Turkish march, they show toy penguins (at least I think that's what they are) moving up and down one of those roller-coaster things. No doubt that it's marketing for their toys, but it's enjoyable to watch it anyway, and probably helping to develop her sense of music. When I put that same piece on for the baby (some recording other than the BE DVD) and I imitate the penguins, she laughs. To be sure, the quality of BE DVDs varies from one to another, and just because you like one, doesn't mean you'll like all of them. But if you buy only one of them, this is the one to get.
Notwithstanding the lack of correlation between exposure to baby videos and intelligence (as cited by some other reviewers), a search of the scientific literature does yield some studies published in recent years showing that exposing infants to specific musical styles influences their musical preference later on (for instance, see Cognition. 2000 Oct 16;77(1):B15-23). Obviously, this does not mean that you need BE. My infant hears much more music, including plenty of Mozart, via audio without video, and the BE is just something extra. In spite of the commercial content, I think it is a worthwhile expense.
A 30 minute toy commercial.......2007-04-21
Not only do they start with a promotional message you are not allowed to skip, the whole DVD shows a selection of toys available for purchase - the website is helpfully listed at the end.
So... they are advertising directly to our babies now, and making us pay for it by saying they are going to help our children's brains.
So, you can take your pick as to who is being programmed.
This one's going back. I think I'll try The Wiggles.
About as useful as those Dog Sitter DVD's.......2007-04-06
Very highly overrated... I've seen kids that would be mesmerized by this and I'm glad it works for their parents... I think my child is just easily bored... to be honest you'd keep your childs attention more by throwing on a family video.
I'll try the tapes again when she's a little older but for a curious and intelligent nine-month old I'd have to say these tapes are a waste of money.

All of them.......2007-06-12
I have enjoyed having them as my own and adding to my collection so I can watch them whenever I want and as often as I want but most especially with no commercials and no editing!! Thanks.
Fun, Fun, Fun.......2007-06-03
We love the effort that has been put into these DVDs. We will often set the disk to play just the "song" chapters.
We use the "sing-a-long" setting to teach our daughter to read.
If you love the music purchase this set. If you love the movies purchase this set.
Fantastic - All the great Musicals in one compact package.......2007-05-21
Not only does this set have all the classics there are bonus features (extra cd's) on each glorious movie. You cannot go wrong with this set. If you have children, this is a must-buy item - they will view these movies over and over again. And no worries about inappropriate materials - this is good wholesome entertainment for the entire family.
A Collection of Great Musical Dramas.......2007-05-14
The Rodgers and Hammerstein Organisation has released this boxed set containing six of their film musicals, each of which comes with a second disc of bonus archival material and documentaries elaborating on the shows. The extra content varies: For example, in Carousel, the film of Liliom, the book on which the R&H show is based is included in its entirety. The bonus discs are themselves compelling viewing, especially prior to watching the main feature, which could be at a later stage because it could be too long to do both in one sitting; besides, these are the great masterpieces of the American Musical Theatre and Drama, although State Fair was first a film, and transferrred onto the stage more recently, and posthumously for the authors.
The stage and film musicals that Richard Rodgers, music, and Oscar Hammerstein II, lyrics, collaborated on, in both cases later in their careers, are the greatest of musical dramas to be found.
It makes revisiting these shows all the more interesting. These are the CinemaScope 55 versions. The Rodgers & Hammerstein Collection [Remastered] (The Sound of Music / The King and I / Oklahoma! / South Pacific / State Fair / Carousel)
A Joyous Viewing Experience.......2007-05-13
The quality and beauty of the productions was first rate. My wife and I have enjoyed them all thoroughly and we will view them over and over again. Thank you for making them available.

Amazon.com
Designed for infants and toddlers (1 to 36 months), Baby Bach is a nicely produced video that features recognizable, familiar toys and colorful objects, moving to the complexly beautiful music of Johann Sebastian Bach. According to the video producers, "Bach's music has shown to enhance creativity, improve academic achievement, reduce anxiety and heighten mental awareness." Any parent will embrace this theory. Not only did this video completely captivate a 22-month-old for its entire 30-minute run-time, but it's easy on the parents, too. The images are lively, clean, and sharp, and producers The Baby Einstein Company have a firm handle on what interests babies and toddlers. The extraneous segments with two pretty little blonde girls is silly, but forgivable. Given that most children elect to watch a video repeatedly, this is one that parents won't mind in the slightest. The music, available on CD, is simply lovely. --N.F. Mendoza

Love BABY BACH music video.......2007-04-06
The images are simple with a lot of contrast for little eyes to focus on. My 5 month old son especially loves it when the children appear on screen; he goos and giggles. He has favorite parts, the animated 'singers' and the live children. I appreciate that he is listening to Bach even though it may not be an actual symphony playing the music. I know his mind is being stimulated. My husband & I watch this with him and tell him what he is looking at to put words with the items.
A Must.......2007-04-02
If you aren't aware of Baby Einstein...you're living under a rock!! My baby actually "watched" this at 6 weeks!! As a person who works with children who are developmentally challenged, I highly recommend this video. In my opinion, all babies should watch this once a day to help stimulate brain development!!
Love this DVD!.......2007-03-08
This is one of my favorite Baby Einstein DVD's for children. I've recommended this to many of the families that I work with and they too, love it!
Blech!.......2006-12-06
I *love* Bach and the music selection for this video is hardly any of the best stuff he composed and so dumbed-down that it's downright bad (maybe it's not dumbed-down and the people who arranged it had a different idea for the figured-bass than most others have seen it but it still isn't appeasing to the ears). Also, like I've said in all my reviews of the composer vids, the timing is off for the vid portion and in a Bach video that's just not good. The Mozart vid is far better music wise but I suggest buying the c.d.s and forgoing the vids for this collection altogether.

Music album of the future........2007-07-02
First of all this is not just another Bach record in surround sound on HD DVD.
This is new conceptual work featuring original arrangement produced specifically for surround sound using location of sound as a main creative element. With the polyphony of Bach music this sound is really amazing.
Besides that the instrumentation itself is very interesting. Honestly I could not think about anything that was done lately that can match the surround sound effect of this HD DVD. I have an opinion that this is the great showcase of how the music will be experienced and produced in the nearest future.
One of the most interesting Bach recordings for years to come........2007-07-02
All that matter about this album is the new music experience of Original Bach Music produced by Alexander Jero. I own several albums by Alexander and always surprised again and again the diversity of his talent. Synthesized and Classical instruments are playing in Perfect Harmony and Chrystal clarity of High Definition Discrete Multichannel audio. And 3-dimensional Sound philosophy making this record the One of the most interesting Bach recordings for years to come.
In response to previous review........2007-07-02
Let me also express my detail opinion about that review so "other prospective buyers have the right to know it and consider it or not as they choose "
First off all even you can't resist the fact: "About the best thing I can say for this HD-DVD is that it shows the medium's potential for surround-sound music accompanied by beautiful images." Don't even realize that project that can evoke this kind of potential in new media already deserves highest recognition.
Then you turning to absolutely subjective purist accusations just by turning around all exiting things that people talk about in forums:
Without a question the thirst track on this disc is the most beautiful masterpiece, so you stating that this is "particularly sappy rendition"
By the same scenario you knowing that people referenced significance of this project to Wendy Carlos work you making absolutely false comment about "little variation of tempo or dynamics" just picking something up. All peaces in this album are range from largo, adagio, to andante and allegro and featuring wide dynamic range. Continue in same style you talking about instruments and finally dropping the term about "monaural sound through headphones" that is just the opposite term to surround sound as a culmination of your poem that made normal people like Patrick Miller naturally assume that you did not have the right surround set-up to listen to this disc. Finally you are summing all this against idea about "3-dimesional sound reality" for "that being billed" contra punting this to original news article about this project.
Next you talk about video track on this disc however this is not point of my comment to this review considering that this is just some nice background images produced to focus listener attention to the music experience.
And in the end you recommend to tern on famous blockbuster "just in case he should have Uncommon Bach playing" this is probably the rudest expressions I know was written in all reviews.
And think people should count that as a real objective opinion that was written without prejudgment? You thought wrong.
Monotonous Bach, flowers don't help.......2007-07-02
About the best thing I can say for this HD-DVD is that it shows the medium's potential for surround-sound music accompanied by beautiful images -- just barely.
The program starts with a particularly sappy rendition of BWV 208 (sometimes sung in English as "Sheep May Safely Graze"). The rest of the collection isn't quite that bad, but shows little variation of tempo or dynamics, with none of the verve of, say, the Brandenburg Concertos as performed by Wendy Carlos. The "instrument" sounds are mostly flutes and tinkling harps and bells, and their sound, while pleasant at times, is close-in rather than spacious, which I don't feel makes the best use of the surround medium. Bass is all front-and-center with that awful middle-of-your-head quality you get from monaural sound through headphones. Why does it have to be like that in a program billed as "music experience in a three-dimensional sound reality"?
The video portion is a series of close-up stills of flowers. Each one is beautiful by itself, but seeing one right after another through the entire program, with never a pullback to a broader view, gets boring. It's no aesthetic plus that the caption "Uncommon Bach / Music experience...[etc.]" persists throughout the program, as does the "dts-HD" logo in the upper right corner.
If you're visiting a friend who has an HD DVD player, you might want to bring a copy of The Last Samurai to offer just in case he should have Uncommon Bach playing.

Some people may sneer at this 1965 musical, but the truth is the film has earned its status as a perennially watchable romantic-drama, largely on the strength of a fun story and chemistry between stars Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. Veteran filmmaker Robert Wise (The Day the Earth Stood Still) mostly stays out of the way of the film's appealing elements, which include a based-on-fact tale of Austria's von Trapp family, who fled their Nazi-occupied country in 1938. Andrews is delightful and even fascinating as Maria, who sheds her tomboyish ways as a novice nun to accept the mantle of adulthood, becoming matron of the motherless von Trapp clan. Plummer is matinee-idol handsome and gives a smart performance to boot, and the cast of young people and kids who make up the singing von Trapp children make a strong impression. Based on the Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical, the score includes such winners as "Maria" and the future John Coltrane hit "My Favorite Things." --Tom Keogh
Description
Julie Andrews in the heartwarming true story that has become a cinematic treasure. Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The Sound of Music." Customer Reviews:

Subtitled "A Sound Journey with Evelyn Glennie," German director Thomas Riedelsheimer's exquisite Touch the Sound is nominally a portrait of the Scottish musician known as "the first full-time solo percussionist." Glennie is certainly a fascinating subject. Profoundly deaf since childhood, she disdains the use of hearing aids and sign language, relying instead on lip reading and, more crucially, on the use of all of her senses, especially touch, to "hear" with her entire body. The film reveals Glennie's extraordinary skills in a variety of settings: playing a snare drum for bemused New Yorkers in cavernous Grand Central Station; improvising with guitarist Fred Frith in an empty warehouse in Cologne, Germany (their final vibes-guitar duet is one of the film's musical highlights); working with hearing-impaired students in her native Aberdeenshire; jamming with taiko drummers in Japan, and later delighting customers in a Tokyo bar with a spontaneous workout involving chopsticks, dishes, cans, and glassware (the woman can make music with virtually anything). But Riedelsheimer, who was also the film's editor and cinematographer, has a broader agenda here--namely, to intensify our awareness of the sounds that surround us everywhere, in every moment. From the streets of New York to the beaches of Santa Cruz, from the rocky Scottish coastline to a tranquil Japanese rock garden, he links heightened audio, as clear and natural as the best ECM recordings, to a succession of gorgeous visual images to create a balance of complex detail and overall sparseness, resulting in a kind of Zen feast. Even more of the same is found in a "making of" featurette that's the highlight of the bonus material, making Touch the Sound easily one of the most rewarding documentaries in recent years. --Sam Graham

A Great Sound Escape.......2007-04-14
This movie really captures the way sound influences our body and how limited of a view we have of an important source of information in our environment. Evelyn is truly gifted and this window into her world is fascinating. This is a slow movie compared to the usual sound bites we're used to in this day and age and I like that about it.
Beautifully filmed, cool improvisations.......2007-03-17
Other reviewers have already described the inspirational aspects of this DVD..I agree. Of particular interest to me are the many improvisational scenes between Fred Frith and Evelyn. The extra feature scenes are terrific. If you enjoy Frith's earlier improvisational outings, ya gotta get this. It's a real pleasure to see Evelyn in an improvisational setting. Many of her available recordings are not as improvisatory...also great imagery and ambient sounds.
Her music took my breath away .......2007-02-10
Okay, so I have been in a learning mode recently. I don't want to learn things a school might teach me. I find myself wanting to learn about the human spirit and things that are not talked about.
I brought home yet another documentary tonight. As I watched it I was kind of taken back by the artist's child like reaction to sound, in general. As the show went on I started feeling as if her reaction to "all" sound was what made her an exceptional artist.
A long time ago my ex introduced me to a guitar player. That is all this artist did. I remember listening to the CD and being totally captured by a particular song. It would literally sweep me away and make me feel so unbelievably sad. There were no lyrics, I didn't know the artist, nor did I know the song. It turned out to be Joe Satriani's "Cry".
This is how Evelyn's music makes me feel. I don't necessarily mean that it makes me want to cry. I am saying... there are no words but you know exactly what she is expressing.
Towards the end a guy quotes Richard Long. He said something like, "Artists are people who are in touch with the energy they had when they were children. They never lost it."
Evelyn later asks, "What really makes you be you?"
I don't own anything by her at this moment, but I will! Her music took my breath away and literally gave me chills.
She also said, "We need to eat, we need to sleep, and we need music."
Incredible!
Beauty and Mind Expansion.......2007-02-09
An utterly absorbing portrayal of an artist who discovers and produces beauty out of unusual materials, and whose work expands one's sense of what music is (and what sound is). The result is not just the chance to hear beautiful music, but also an enrichment of one's sense of living in a world of sound, and an attentiveness to an aspect of life often unnoticed. The documentary includes generous selections of music and interviews with Evelyn Glennie, who is not only charming and very articulate, but who also has thought deeply about her work and consequently has a lot to say about it. The film was made by the filmaker of Rivers and Tides (about the artist Andy Goldsworthy), and has the same mixture of wonder, mind-expansion, and sheer pleasure as that film. In this golden era of documentaries, this film standfs out as one of the best.
how does she do it?!.......2007-01-25
In this documentary about her life and work, the percussionist Evelyn Glennie (a Grammy award-winner) does for sound what her fellow Scot and environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy did for sight in the film Rivers and Tides (2002). In fact, both films were directed by Thomas Riedelsheimer. "My whole life," says Glennie, "is about sound; it's what makes me tick as a human being." That's a remarkable statement when about thirty minutes into the film you learn that by the time she was a teenager she was profoundly deaf. From playing a snare drum in New York's Grand Central Station, improvising with Fred Frith in an abandoned warehouse in Germany, visiting her brother at their family farm in Aberdeenshire, or staging an impromptu session in Tokyo using chop sticks on restaurant paraphernalia, Glennie explores the aesthetics, psychology and physicality of sound. Splattering water, pneumatic hammers at construction sites, a tap dancer, and general urban din all provide material for her reflections. Most of the sounds in the film are experimental, eerie, and dissonant, but to her credit Glennie amazes us with the complex miracle of one of our five senses.

Customer Reviews:
Need this one for your collection!.......2007-05-16
When reading the reviews, you can tell that the majority of them are Marty Robbins's fans. What about those of you out there who have never heard of him? He was the first country music artist to receive an acadamy award for his Country-Pop hit for "My Woman, My Woman, My Wife". He was a songwriter, actor, book-writer and music artist. Marty died in December, 1982. He was ahead of his time in writing and recording songs. I would strongly recommend that you hear examples of some of his songs that are available with various CD's for sale on Amazon. You will find out - he was truly a great artist & very versitile in the different forms of music. His last hit was a song called "Some memories just won't die". This is fitting. When you hear him sing (even for the first time) - you will be amazed. You will discover that his music plus the memories of fans who watched him perform while he was alive "just won't die" as well. You might be surprised - for you might find out it will be the same for you after watching this program. For those who are collector's of Marty Robbins - This is a must!
What a treasure!.......2007-05-12
We are so fortunate to have these old films of Marty singing his songs and I am so glad that I ordered it. Marty was one of a kind and there will never been another one like him. No one has a voice like his! He always sang his songs with such ease, and had a big voice for such a small man.
Definitive anthology from a prodigiously talented man.......2007-04-25
One of the real tragedies in music was Marty Robbins' early death in 1982. He - and we - never got to savor what might have been a career autumn, where he might have had a chance to deepen further an artistry, that, taken in hindsight, was mind-boggling in its wide range of styles. A country boy at heart, he always kept the base of his music there, but he showed how thoroughly adept he could be at Hawaiian, jazz, reggae, rock n' roll of course, gospel, and just plain old pop. He could do honky-tonk authentically. And he was the true master of the gunfighter and trail songs. The word here is versatile - to the gills!
Robbins had an astonishing vocal range, which could encompass deep, brooding lows to the sweetest tenor falsetto imaginable; take a listen here to the tropically-infused "Ka-lu-a," which is sung with real tenderness, and the upward switches into falsetto is masterfully done, e with a sound that can be metaphorically described as a golden ribbon of honey.
What's so rewarding about this collection, is that it shows his evolution through probably nearly thirty years of performing. It is fortuitous that so many video-documented performances survive. We see Marty from the clean-cut 1950s boy to the mustachoied hipster look of the 1970s. The voice remained intact throughout (his intonation and diction are both models of impeccable musicality), and his identification with the lyrics more deeply personal as time marched on. His rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" is poignant, moving, and you get a great sense of melancholy, almost as if he knew his time was getting shorter. Elsewhere, we get his classic rendition of "Singing the Blues," which , when you compare it to Guy Mitchell's monster-seller, shows Marty to have the much better vocal production and is livelier in expression. We also get all his signature tunes, such as "A White Sport Coat," "El Paso," "Don't Worry," "Ruby Ann," "Devil Woman," "My Woman, My Wife," among so many others, encompassing all his styles. We also get some bonus clips, from what appear to be some rare, early kinescopes.
What makes this release different from his commercial audio versions of these songs is the joy of seeing Marty perform these songs. A born performer, you see the music just oozing out from his pores. Though he displays an involvement and energy consistently, giving his all, he is so at ease and relaxed being a showman, you get the feeling that it was his natural metier.
We also get some thoughtful commentaries in between songs by Merle Haggard, Barbara Mandrell, and Robbins' son, among others, and the love all of them show is palpable.
Watching this produces a bittersweet feeling. Marty should have had so many more years, yet, he left no short measure of his prodigious talents. Here's to one of the true kings of music; long may his art endure.
great music and memories.......2007-01-17
I saw this show on PBS and loved it. Marty Robbins is an artist for all seasons.
Fantastic gift for Mom.......2007-01-15
My Mom LOVES this DVD. She has always been a huge Marty Robbins fan. When we put this in the player she oohed and ahhed at the start of every song and love all of the commentary. She even stopped it occassionally to add her own commentary, too. A must have for true Marty Robbins fans!

Customer Reviews:
Buckinham Nicks.......2007-06-30
I'd like to see Lindsey and Stevie do an entire Music DVD of their best songs together for old time sake. No matter what went down between them it seems they will always be soul mates. Also, I very much enjoyed Stevie's Crystal Visions DVD, but Lindsey wasn't in it. Together they are magic!
decent video.......2007-05-13
some excellent music from Lyndsey, but i was somewhat disappointed that Stevie Nicks was not in much of the video. worth a purchase, just be forewarned that you are not going to see much Nicks.
Great Lindsey-Bad Stevie!.......2007-05-12
Lindsey Buckingham is at his finest as a guitarist. He is extremely talented and I think long overlooked in the world of rock music. This performance includes material from his last solo effort as well as a few old Fleetwood Mac stalwarts. If you like Lindsey and his particular style, then I recommend you pick up this DVD.
Now, the downer...Stevie Nicks performs a couple of songs with Lindsey and I'm yet to figure out why. She appeared totally disinterested. Her voice is nearly gone, and frankly, the 10 or so minutes she appeared almost killed the momentum of the overall performance for me.
and on the 8th day...........2007-03-22
Lindsey still rocks. the revamped "trouble"=great. big love=great (of course). A bass player would have been nice (especially for go you own way) but it sounded good anyway. If only he and stevie had remembered the rest of frozen love. o well. ten out of ten.
Phenominal!.......2007-01-11

Description
Dwight Yoakam rocked the house in his 1988 performance on Austin City Limits. Now that performance is available for the first time on DVD and it includes songs that were not included in the original TV broadcast. From the "Streets Of Bakersfield" to "Buenos Noches From A Lonely Room" with some "Guitars, Cadillacs" and more, this DVD is the classic Dwight Yaokam live performance that he has become famous for. Also available on CD.

Need to see and hear more from Dwight!!!
No one comes close to his brilliance, voice, song writing, and the
overall talent.. Also, a great actor.
LOVE HIM!!!
A real Dwight Yoakam DVD to be live from Austin, Texas, the real year... 1988!.......2006-09-02
I like country music, singing, playing musical instruments and the way they sing and the best movie I like is music from the '70's and '80's and that's how some people want to make their living that way and their real favourite musical instruments to play are acoustic guitar, electric guitar, violin, mandolin, piano or keyboards, banjo and saxophone and those are the real best seven instruments to ever play.
I like Dwight Yoakam's best early music from the 1980's and this is the best DVD to ever watch and enjoy and I really love this movie and it's the best and it was recored in October 23rd, 1988 and that's how you'd really want to make your living that way with some of that music like that sometimes.
My favorite 11 songs on this DVD are Guitars, Cadillacs, What I Don't Know, Home Of The Blues, 1,000 Miles, Please, Please Baby, Little Ways, Honky Tonk Man, Street Of Bakersfield, Always Late With Your Kisses, Little Sister and This Drinkin' Will Kill Me but, Dwight Yoakam was rocking the house in his 1988 performance on Austin City Limits. Now this is also now available on CD, which I hope to get for my birthday sometime and I'll love it.
The musicians in this band are:
Dwight Yoakam vocals, acoustic guitar
Pete Anderson lead guitar
Jeff Donavan drums
Taras Prodaniuk bass
Scott Joss fiddle
special guests are Buck Owens and Flaco Jimenez
I like that young-looking Dwight Yoakam back in the 1980's when he was the young Dwight Yoakam because, he wears a bollow tie, which I think is very good for a nice cowboy.
To fix some of the Dwight Yoakam's band, if you were playing an acoustic guitar and you were Dwight Yoakam live from Austin, Texas and you'd wear a white cowboy hat, white t-shirt, plaid shirt of blue, purple, white and yellow, light tan brown jacket, blue jeans and black cowboy boots playing the acoustic guitar, and the other one if someone else would be Pete Anderson who would wear a white muscle shirt, black shirt with white dots, dark navy blue blazer, black jeans and black cowboy boots playing the lead guitar, and the other one if another one else would be Jeff Donavan who would wear a black t-shirt, tan beige corduroy pants and black cowboy boots playing the drums, and the other another one else would be Taras Prodaniuk who would wear a white shirt, brown jacket, brown pants and tall black leather riding boots playing the bass, and the other one else would then be Scott Joss who would wear a white t-shirt, blue and white striped shirt, brown blazer, blue jeans and brown cowboy boots playing the fiddle, and the other person who would pretend to be the special guest Buck Owens who would wear a green shirt, brown blazer, blue jeans and brown cowboy boots playing the electric guitar and the other person who would pretend to be the speical guest Flaco Jimenez who would wear a blue shirt, black suit jacket and black suit pants with black shoes playing the accordion and that's how all the best people would've looked great in those outfits as an example in the concert and that's how the way it is that I like it.
Dwight Yoakam reminds me and puts me in mind of PRCA rodeo calf roper Ricky Canton and some of the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) years to recommend.
So the songs, here's how some of them are as if for the NFR years of the '80s and '90s as if this was one whole Just Lookin' For A Hit of 17 songs of:
1. I got you
2. Little Sister
3. Sin City - (with K. D. Lang)
4. I sang Dixie
5. Streets of Bakersfield - (with Buck Owens)
6. Long White Cadillac
7. Guitars, Cadillacs
8. Honky Tonk Man
9. Please, Please Baby
10. Little Ways
11. Smoke Along The Track
12. What I Don't Know
13. Home of the Blues: A Tribute to Johnny Cash
14. 1,000 Miles
15. Buenas Noches From A Lonely Room (She Wore Red Dresses)
16. Always Late With Your Kisses
17. This Drinkin' Will Kill Me
That's how all the best 17 songs all of them like of Buenas Noches From A Lonely Room as somebody sang Dixie when she wore red dresses as as he died and I searched till I found them, then I cursed at the sight of their sleeping shadows in the cold neon light and in the dark morning silence I placed the gun to her head when of the day when she wore red dresses, but now she lay dead, so you understand about the 17 best songs for the Dixie cowboys who love the best hits and know:)
Buck Owens and Dwight Yoakam did a great song in the Streets of Bakersfield, which was a smash hit in the summer of 1988 and it was the best.
Now, the songs for the perfect years are this.
I got you (perfect for the 1989 NFR)
Little Sister (perfect for the 1988 NFR)
Sin City - (with K. D. Lang) (perfect for the 1990 NFR)
I sang Dixie (perfect for the 1989 NFR)
5. Streets of Bakersfield - (with Buck Owens) (perfect of Ricky Canton's 8.1 second run at the 1989 NFR and Mike Johnson's 9.3 second run at the 1989 NFR)
6. Long White Cadillac (perfect of Ricky Canton roping up a calf at the 1990 NFR)
7. Guitars, Cadillacs (perfect of Ricky Canton's 8.9 second run at the 1987 NFR - first time)
8. Honky Tonk Man (perfect for the 1987 NFR)
9. Please, Please Baby (perfect for the 1988 NFR)
10. Little Ways (perfect of Ricky Canton's 8.5 second run at the 1988 NFR)
11. Smoke Along The Track (perfect for the 1990 NFR)
12. What I Don't Know (perfect for the 1989 NFR)
13. Home of the Blues: A Tribute To Johnny Cash (perfect for the 1987 NFR)
14. 1,000 Miles (perfect for the 1989 NFR)
15. Buenas Noches From A Lonely Room (She Wore Red Dresses) (perfect for the 1990 NFR)
16. Always Late With Your Kisses (perfect for the 1988 NFR)
17. This Drinkin' Will Kill Me (perfect for the 1990 NFR)
But your only two favorite songs you would love are "Always Late With Your Kisses" and "Little Sister" as if you like those only two.
In a DVD called "Dwight Yoakam - Just Lookin' for a Hit", note that he's having a fun time in "Always Late With Your Kisses" and in the "Streets Of Bakersfield" (a duet with Buck Owens). But, I don't want to be having beating up the whole thing into the ground because Dwight is a real honky-tonk singer and musician, but I have to mention the fact that the tight black leather pants play a significant role in the video for Always Late With Your Kisses to show that you should ask for one more kiss and you love the feel of those tight black leather pants when you kiss sometone because you like the feel of them - that's all I'm going to say about it.
For the real songs of a couple of you in black leather pants are:
William MacLeod in a black cowboy hat, white shirt, black bow tie, black leather jacket and black leather pants playing an acoustic guitar perfect for the music video "Always Late With Your Kisses" and that's the only best one music video you love.
William MacLeod in a black cowboy hat, white shirt, black bow tie, black leather jacket and tight black leather pants playing an acoustic guitar perfect for the two music videos "Suspicious Minds" and "You Win My Love" because those tight pants make you move and play your guitar very fast.
William MacLeod in a white cowboy hat, white muscle shirt, black shirt with white dots, light tan brown jacket, and tight black leather pants playing an acoustic guitar for the three songs of "No Fear", "Pocket of a Clown" and "Things Change" to show that I am in a big lean a couple of times.
William MacLeod in a white cowboy hat, white muscle shirt, and tight black leather pants and then a black cowboy hat, white shirt, black bow tie, black leather jacket and tight black leather pants for the Jo Dee Messina song "I'm Alright".
But, the real best seven songs are "Always Late With Your Kisses", "Suspicious Minds", "You Win My Love", "No Fear", "Pocket of a Clown", "Things Change" and "I'm Alright" all the perfect songs for the tight black leather pants except, the shirt, jacket and the cowboy hat.
Well, now you understand about some of the rodeo years for the best songs, rodeo calf roper and the tight pants for some of the songs and I gotta say, I am watching the only music videos of Dwight in "Always Late With Your Kisses", "Suspicious Minds", "Pocket of A Clown" and "Things Change" and they are the best four music videos to watch of him in those leather pants. That's all I am going to say about it.
The only Terri Clark video I like of her in black leather pants is "No Fear".
Well, I gotta say, Dwight is the best and I like his young look at the 1988 Austin, Texas of this DVD and he was pretty young looking there with a bollow tie on and this was the best, ever.
Well, I really liked and enjoyed this video and I really loved it!:) THE MADDEN CD:)

Fantastic, brings back memories when he first started out. Love every bit of it. Body, voice and soul, he got it ALL!
Great Set.......2006-07-25
This is the second of the "Austin City Limits" series I have purchased, and I am amazed at the quality and value. This set shows the young Dwight Yoakam at his best, singing a nice variety of some of his best tunes. A special treat is the guest appearance of Buck Owens and Flaco Jiminez, both of whom perform brilliantly, making a great show even better. Dwight's longtime collaborator Pete Anderson is also on board, playing his trademark guitar licks, and doing so superbly. In all, it is a thoroughly enjoyable show, nicely priced, and well worth buying for many repeat viewings. Those persons responsible for producing this series should be commended for this fine product. I look forward to acquiring the rest of the ACL series. Trust me on this one, friends - you can't go wrong with this DVD. It's a keeper!
