This rousing musical, based on the stories of Shalom Aleichem, takes place in pre-revolutionary Russia and centers on the life of Tevye (Topol), a milkman who is trying to keep his family's traditions in place while marrying off his three older daughters. Yet, times are changing and the daughters want to make their own matches, breaking free of many of the constricting customs required of them by Judaism. In the background of these events, Russia is on the brink of revolution and Jews are feeling increasingly unwelcome in their villages. Tevye--who expresses his desire for sameness in the opening number, "Tradition"--is trying to keep everyone, and everything, together. The movie is strongly allegorical--Tevye represents the common man--but it does it dexterously, and the resulting film is a stunning work of art. The music is excellent (it won Oscars for the scoring and the sound), with plenty of familiar songs such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "If I Were a Rich Man," which you'll be humming long after the movie is over. Isaac Stern's violin--he provides the music for the fiddler on the roof--is hauntingly beautiful. And despite the serious subject matter, the film is quite comedic in parts; it also well deserves the Oscar it won for cinematography. --Jenny Brown

Customer Reviews:
My most favorite movie.......2007-05-13
I love this musical, it is probably my most favorite of all time. I love the way it was filmed and all the characters.
Fantastic!.......2007-03-25
Fantastic musical. Fiddler on the Roof tells the story of Tevya, and his family, coming to grips with changes in a small village Tzarist Russia. Changes to the vaunted Tradition first come small, in the form of his daughters wanting to pick their own spouses. It gets worse as the village confronts anti-semitism.
The music is classic - hard to imagine anyone not knowing at least half the score already. Tradition, Sunrise Sunset, L'haim to name a few... And Topol... It is safe to say he was born to play Tevya.
The irony is dark, and much is shown, but not told. Is the breaking of tradition good or bad? Where do traditions come from? Is moving on ultimately a bad or good thing?
DVD add-ins include extensive commentary from the director, Norman Jewison, who adds light and historical context to the story and it's making. Well worth catching those as well.
Sounds is a joke.......2007-03-24
Love this movie but this "special" edition is NOT. The sound a remastered 5.1 is actually 2.0 returned the product once and received more of the same. Buy it for sentimental values only
FIDDLER ON THE ROOF.......2007-03-13

One of the last great musicals Hollywood has given us. Topol shines brightly in this Norman Jewison directed marvel. Visually and musically stunning, A perfect film to make one laugh, cry, sing-along and think. Why don't we get many others like it today? One of my very favorite musicals. Favorite films for that matter. Cast to perfection.

Matchmaker, Matchmaker. . .make me a match!.......2007-02-20
The plot of this musical motion picture touches the home base in just about everyone's life, regardless of politics, gender, view, or religion.
The basic premise is the breaking down of "old-school" traditions and incorporating new ones. With mature family members helplessly watching those previous barriers fall, in spite of their own point of view.
It takes the example of three daughters, in this particular family and setting, to demonstrate how far the breaking down of those barriers go. Each asking for just a little bit more compassion, understanding, and love.
The movie sets are exquisite and I don't use this term lightly. Even though it happens around a poverished village, it goes to show how rich and rewarding people can still live within those realms.
The music is so apart of the story and general mood, it doesnt matter if one is a movie musical fan or not.
My favorite musical sequence was the part when Tevye informs his wife of a made up dream he had, which is meant to become a bad omen for an already fixed marriage plan of the oldest daughter. He doesnt know how to explain to his wife, the fact that there is another real love affair going on, and needs to make it appear the fixed marriage plan is doomed.
Brilliant, and lively! Tradition!

Description
WEST SIDE STORY: This "brilliant" (The New Republic) film sets the ageless story of Romeo and Juliet against a backdrop of gang warfare in 1950s New York. Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins and scripted by Ernest Lehman, the film combines Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's unforgettable score ("Maria," "America," "Somewhere," "Tonight") with Robbins' own exuberant choreography to achieve an exhilarating "work of art" (Saturday Review). A love affair is fated for tragedy amidst the vicious rivalry of two street gangs - the Jets and the Sharks. When Jets member Tony (Richard Beymer) falls for Maria (Natalie Wood), the sister of the Sharks leader, it's more than these two warring gangs can handle. And as mounting tensions rise, a battle to the death ensues, and innocent blood is shed in a heartbreaking finale. FIDDLER ON THE ROOF: "An outstanding accomplishment in every category" (Boxoffice), this lavishly produced and critically acclaimed screen adaptation of the international stage sensation tells the life-affirming story of Tevye (Topol), a poor milkman whose love, pride and faith help him face the oppression of turn-of-the century czarist Russia. Nominated for eight Academy Awards®, including Best Picture and Best Director, and featuring such classic songs as "If I Were A Rich Man," "Matchmaker" and "Sunrise, Sunset," Fiddler on the Roof is a universal story of hope, love and acceptance - a "stunning, joyful and jubilant" (New York Daily News) musical masterpiece. GUYS AND DOLLS: Hollywood legends Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Jean Simmons and Vivian Blain (from the original Broadway cast) are dazzling in this Frank Loesser (How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying) masterpiece, unleashing a "spectacular, song-and-dance show that's loaded with entertainment" (New York Journal-American). Featuring hits like "Luck Be a Lady" and "A Woman in Love," this smash film version of one of Broadway's most popular musicals is guaranteed, rip-roaring "four-star entertainment" (New York Daily News). The slickest big-time New York City gamblers, Sky Masterson (Brando) and Nathan Detroit (Sinatra), can't resist making or taking a bet on anything. So when a pretty missionary (Simmons) sets up shop in the neighborhood, Nathan stakes a grand that Sky can't seduce her. But all bets are off when Sky falls madly in love in this romantic musical spectacular that sets the Big Apple afire with excitement!

Great Collection.......2007-01-19
Love all three musicals! Great for those just beginning to build a collection of movie musicals.
Great buy.......2007-01-14
Three really great musical movies in one package, how can you go wrong? A permanent addition to my DVD collection.
Buyer Beware!.......2005-10-25
I returned this boxed set to Amazon for a refund because the 3 films inside are not as advertised on the Sony/Columbia website. All 3 films are supposed to be in anamorphic widescreen, but only 1 of them (FIDDLER ON THE ROOF) actually is. GUYS AND DOLLS is still the same old "letterbox" version, and they put the awful pan-and-scan fullscreen version of WEST SIDE STORY in this box. If you're a collector like me, you will not want to see WSS in pan-and-scan. This film won 10 Oscars--one of them for its innovative widescreen cinematography. This product is not as advertised, and Sony/Columbia should know that they can't pull a fast one like this. Please join me in boycotting this collection until they give us what they promised. Thanks.
AMERICAN MOVIE MUSICALS COLLECTION.......2005-10-22
I purchased this collection ONLY because GUYS AND DOLLS is advertised as ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN 2.35:1 which is NOT correct. The back of the box even gives this erroneous information. This is the same LETTERBOXED (non-Anamorphic) transfer in the original single disc MGM DVD release. This is FALSE advertisement.
WEST SIDE STORY is a 4:3 PAN and SCAN version. FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is correctly advertised as ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN 2,35:1. I know the price is superb for these three classic musicals, but I already own ALL of these in WIDESCREEN, and I really wanted GUYS AND DOLLS with a new ANAMORPHIC transfer. I am planning to return the set. SHAME ON YOU MGM and SONY PICTURES DVD for the attempt to fool the public with this release.

He doesnt know how to explain to his wife, the fact that there is another real love affair going on, and needs to make it appear the fixed marriage plan is doomed.
Brilliant, and lively! Tradition!

Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful.......2007-06-14
I don't know what I like better, the story or the music. The performances are absolutely riveting, convincing, hysterical. This movie gives the viewers a juicy taste of Jewish culture, with classic signature songs like "Rich Man" and "Sunrise, Sunset." I love it for its flawless humor. Fiddler on the Roof is definitely a keeper!
Musical Masterpiece.......2007-04-18
One of the last great musicals Hollywood has given us. Topol shines brightly in this Norman Jewison directed marvel. Visually and musically stunning, A perfect film to make one laugh, cry, sing-along and think. Why don't we get many others like it today? One of my very favorite musicals. Favorite films for that matter. Cast to perfection.
Fiddler on the Roof DVD.......2007-02-21
A classic digitally restored. Who doesn't love Topol? Best of all...you don't have to be a "wealthy man" to enjoy it!
