Directed by Sidney Lumet (Serpico) and penned by Joel Schumacher (Batman and Robin), this lavish 1978 adaptation of the Broadway hit The Wiz was the biggest production filmed in New York City up to that point, utilizing the newly revamped Astoria Studios and locations around the city. Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, and Ted Ross (reprising his Tony-winning role as the Lion) star in this Academy Award-nominated musical for the whole family.

The Wiz is probably the grandest take on L. Frank Baum's classic tale The Wizard of Oz. The production team created sets with a sense of urban magic and spectacle: a New York subway station literally comes to life, and the massive plaza between the World Trade Center towers is transformed into the Emerald City, featuring nearly 400 dancers with three costume changes. Like all good musicals, the Quincy Jones arrangements are highly hummable long after viewing (especially the funky "Ease On Down the Road" and the inspirational "Brand New Day"). In an era before MTV, the camera stays nearly stationary as Ross and Lena Horne vocally soar through their numbers. Their stage-like performances successfully make the leap to film, making The Wiz a testament to their singing talents and star presence. The then-thirtysomething Ross raised some eyebrows playing the traditionally teenaged Dorothy, but she and her supporting cast (including Richard Pryor as the Wiz) carry the tunes with an infectious verve that will appeal to folks of all ages. --Shannon Gee

5 out of 5 stars Fun watch.......2007-06-30

The first time I saw this move, I was about 9years old. I couldn't completely enjoy it because the monkies scared me. Today I can fully apreciate this film. It has a wide range of soulfull cast and motown music. Sit down with your family and watch this movie with a new mind. Leave Judy Garland (Dorathy) with The Wizzard of Oz, and get ready to dance along with the Wiz.

5 out of 5 stars The same story.......2007-06-13

Only it's in New York, and a few new twists from the Wizerd of Oz. And all the actors are black. great movie!

4 out of 5 stars A well intended effort..........2007-06-10

This movie is really interesting to watch especially if you are a kid. I remember when it first came out. I loved the soundtrack not to mention that the songs stay in your head for a long time afterwards. I especially liked the dancing skits in the movie, even though some are seriously dated and you just laugh watching them.
ONe of my fav. pts is Miss One and her cartoonish friends singing and dancing about The Wiz. Another of my favs. was Quincy Jones and revue doing their different color changing singing/dancing jigs. That was cool to watch.
MJ stole the show with his surprising acting talent. I think Dorothy should have been played by someone much shorter and younger than DR. However, she was strategically given the role to boost the film's rating being that she was in the height of her success at that time. She annoyingly whined her way thru the film. Richard Pryor was really funny as usual.
If you have never seen this movie, you should check it out at least once. It brings back memories and can be fun to watch on one of those days when it's raining out and there's not much going on.

5 out of 5 stars Very Colorful.......2007-05-24

This is also a good movie, I enjoyed watching this movie with my children. They were able to see Michael Jackson before his transformation, they were able to see a lot of the stars back then. I thought it was very educational too

1 out of 5 stars Best band with the Worst Videos..........2006-03-02

Massive Attack is one of the best bands ever in my opinion, so it's twice the shame that their videos should feel like rejected concepts tossed at other bands. Rapping at a table. Bad lip-syncing down a boring street. Returning to a gritty apartment. A white guy watching his wife cheat on him with two black men. A baby singing in the womb. A stripper video that is a great example of nudity for nudity's sake. These are some of the worst video concepts ever completed, even early 90's Madonna videos had more taste than this. It's astonishing when the band and their live shows are so clearly intending to bring us something different.

I have to say though, that the video for ANGEL should be seen, as it is the one great video they've done.

4 out of 5 stars Great Videos MONO SOUNDTRACK.......2004-04-11

I was pretty disappointed with the DVD's sound. I have not a problem if the band decided to release the videos in mono, but somebody along the way forgot to inform the customers about this decision, and the disc itself has printed "LPCM Stereo" on it. That is the ONLY problem I have with the soundtrack.

I don't ask for 5.1 sound, simply because 90% of music DVD's with 5.1 are "faux", in other words, echo and reverb added on the surrounds, which results in horrible sound imaging. Much better off with PCM Stereo and using your amplifier's Dolby Prologic II if you can.

Why am I disappointed? Well, I don't recall if the videos were in stereo when I watched them on TV, but if they were, which I highly think the case, then a mono soundtrack doesn't hold true to the original video as it was conceived.

Anyway, still a collection of great videos from some amazing directors like Gondry and Sednaoui.

4 out of 5 stars My Mind is Upside Down!.......2004-02-13

This is a nearly perfect music-DVD. The videos (the good ones) are top notch. They will continue to bring you back for more viewings.
There are, however, very dissapointing things on this DVD. The actual DVD menu is absolutely sparse and pretty bad. And the first four or five videos you can forget about - one of which is pretty much soft-core porn (seems bizarre and stupid).
Disregarding those minor draw-backs the remaining videos shine! If it were not for the bad things mentioned above this would easily be five stars.
Some videos are genious - they are simply works of art created around songs that are works of art unto themselves.
This DVD is no question worth the price - i could watch the videos of Angel, Teardrop, Inertia Creeps, or Karmacoma at least ten more times. I can also imagine this as a backdrop for a chill-out time with your friends
THOUGHT PROVOKING, INTERESTING, TWISTED, BUT SOMETIMES UTTERLY STUPID.
(sorry if i'm being too harsh)

5 out of 5 stars For the Value - It's Worth it!.......2003-07-22

I seem to buy a lot of DVDs with videos on them, and I could not pass up these 11 promo videos from Massive Attack. It's like a GREATEST HITS or SINGLES package, so it should please the casual as well as obsessive fan. Songs go chronilogically in order throughout the disc. There are no extras - just eleven videos in stereo with no bells or whistles. But most of these don't need explaining. The good part is that you have many guest vocalists near the end - Tracy Thorne of EBTG, and Tricky to name two. So it seems to lend itself to parties or bar settings! Video quality is fine, though on widescreen televisions you may see some funky aspect ratios. This is built for squares! It's only in 2.0 stereo, but so were the singles. Wish more bands would release their videos this way!

4 out of 5 stars Massive flashbacks..........2003-07-16

In 1991 I was fortunate to be a vocalist for a band and we opened for Massive Attack during their first US tour supporting Blue Lines. They didn't bring Shara Nelson and their stage show wasn't quite worked out yet but they had 3 videos on VHS that they were handing out. The VHS has been long lost so to get this DVD is a flash from the past for me. But some of their later videos (circa 1998) I couldn't quite get into as much. Too much focus on 3-D in the camera. But still it is cool to have this DVD and travel down memory lane.....

Though it may be thought of as sacrilegious to remake a classic such as The Wizard of Oz, this 1978 film directed by Sidney Lumet (The Pawnbroker, Serpico) is a vibrant and entertaining retelling of the modern fable, featuring an all black cast in the familiar story of a rural small-town girl whose dreams transport her to a magical world where the battle between good and evil gives the real world a sense of perspective. Rendered in the style of a musical (based on a successful Broadway run), the film benefits from using new contemporary music from stars Diana Ross (Mahogany, Lady Sings the Blues) as Dorothy and Michael Jackson as the shy Scarecrow, with music arranged by Quincy Jones. This visually and musically exciting film is less a remake than a reinvention that stands and dances very well on its own. --Robert Lane

Animal All Day Animal's videos have built up a strong reputation among the true street riders. Their latest flick titled "All Day" doesn't disappoint. It's not only the team riders who get sections but friends too who lend their hand with some great footy. It's the respect they have for the Animal brand that make them go out of their way to clock some filming time to be part of the Animal video. All Day is actually a good title as the streets of New York don't slow down much. Most footage however is filmed at night, when the security is minimal and the shopping crowd is small. Bob Scerbo held his camera low and made sure the camera was moving which made for some great angles.

The DVD is a short instructional video about online poker. It actually gives some helpful hints on how to win while playing online. Unfortunately, at the end of every segment, the young instructor is promoting his online website where he sells additional tools to "help" you win online. I started to feel like I was watching an "infomercial".

5 out of 5 stars actually learned something.......2005-05-01

I'm always skeptical of these things, but I was actually impressed. I've searched online and read info on sites that cover this topic, but I found that getting the info from a DVD was a lot easier. It covers everything you need to get started playing online and learning the different strategies that apply, things to look out for, what to look for in a poker site, etc...

4 out of 5 stars Very useful strategies.......2005-04-21

I've been playing online poker for fun and for money since the early days. I'm suprised that it took this long for a good recource that focuses almost exclusively on online play.

While I knew a few of the topics they covered, I was impressed with the amount I learned or overlooked when playing online. I would recommend this DVD to anyone who is thinking about playing online...
