Amazon.com essential video
In the fall of 1979, Sam Raimi and his merry band headed into the woods of rural Tennessee to make a movie. They emerged with a roller coaster of a film packed with shocks, gore, and wild humor, a film that remains a benchmark for the genre. Ash (cult favorite Bruce Campbell) and four friends arrive at a backwoods cabin for a vacation, where they find a tape recorder containing incantations from an ancient book of the dead. When they play the tape, evil forces are unleashed, and one by one the friends are possessed. Wouldn't you know it, the only way to kill a "deadite" is by total bodily dismemberment, and soon the blood starts to fly. Raimi injects tremendous energy into this simple plot, using the claustrophobic set, disorienting camera angles, and even the graininess of the film stock itself to create an atmosphere of dread, punctuated by a relentless series of jump-out-of-your-seat shocks. The Evil Dead lacks the more highly developed sense of the absurd that distinguish later entries in the series--Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness--but it is still much more than a gore movie. It marks the appearance of one of the most original and visually exciting directors of his generation, and it stands as a monument to the triumph of imagination over budget. --Simon Leake
Customer Reviews:
a movie worth a watch.......2007-07-03
i bought the vhs version from a friend because i thought it was a zombie movie. it has somewhat of zombies but the main thing in this movie is an
evil spirit is awaken when 5 teans want to spend a few days in a forest in
a cabin but they find a book that is supposed to awaken the spirit
and the spirit is in the trees. this spirit can also turn the people into
these possesed zombie things that are controlled by the spirit. after a
good hour of the movie only one person is left (if i told you it would be
a spoiler)and that person is trying to kill the zombie things and try and stop the tree spirit. but anyway the movie is surprisingly good and is worth a watch once or twice and the ending couldve been a little better
but that is why there is a sequal i guess. also one more thing is that i wasnt really scared but there are a lot of scenes where something would jump out of nowhere but i like a good scare.
An Awesome Movie That Became An Icon of Horror.......2007-05-03
It may not look like much by today's standards, but for the budget that was used making this movie, it really comes off great. This film is different from the two sequels in a couple of ways, one being that Ash is more of the cowardly co-star and second being that this is strictly horror. Not that it is really scary, but it's intention are in that genre with no real laughs intended. Everytime I watch the movie, I am amazed with how much was able to get done with such a low amount of money to spend and how well the movie comes off. It is just as good as any major film of the same year, you can't really tell the difference between a big budget horror movie and the Evil Dead when it comes to quality.
It is easy to tell that there was talent that was working in front of and behind the camera. Not just Bruce (who would be the only star with any future success in film), but everyone else was equally impressive. The way the entire movie was written, set up and shot is nothing short of amazing for a young director and writer (Sam Raimi). Overall, if you have seen any of the other movies in the series or never have, this movie is a big recommendation. Just know that this is different from the other movies, as I said, Ash isn't the heroic icon he is known for now with the quick one liners. He is more of a side kick who accidentally has to survive his friends turning evil.
EVIL DEAD THE FIRST OF THREE.......2007-04-11
THIS FIRST EPISODE OF THE EVIL TRILOGY IS DEFINITELY THE BEST. IT IS SCARY AND FUNNY. BRUCE CAMPBELL IS GREAT. EVIL DEAD 2 AND ARMY OF DARKNESS WERE ALSO GREAT MOVIES. I RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE WHO LIKES SCARY MOVIES.
evil dead .......2007-04-11
the evil dead movie is hit on my part, in my books the movie is second place so far, in 1st the therd movie army of darkness is in first. But i have not seen the second movie.I loved the movie and injoyed it a lot, will they ever die!?!?!?!
Very good scary movie.......2007-01-23
I really love this movie. It is one of my favorite scary movies of all time.

Customer Reviews:
Badly acted and Stupid but....Hilarious!.......2007-05-03
Critics are soooo judgemental and overly serious that of course they threw this movie one star easily. Hell I could toss it one star easily too because I see everything that is bad about it. But I still can't help but to see it as great fun ayway. It stars Jonathan Silverman and Andrew McCarthy as 2 bafoons who wanna work for a rich businessman named Bernie Lomax (Terry Kiser). They know something about his business that they don't realize he wants to kill them for knowing.
He invites them for a weekend at his beach home but he gets killed before they get there. They slowly realize that he's dead and people on the island are slower than them because they just don't see that he's dead. So they fake him being alive just so they can live it up and enjoy his place to themselves. They soon have to save themselves from the guy who killed Bernie. The result is a really really stupid movie with pretty awful acting but will you enjoy the movie anyway ? Hell yes! Terry Kiser actually is hilarious and gives a fun performance as...a dead body. It's silly that no one can even tell that Bernie is dead and try to carry conversations with him. Hell his g/f has sex with him and doesn't even know she had sex with a dead body.
Of course those are good reasons critics gave it one star but to me those are good reasons to enjoy how stupid this movie is. I mean why just give a movie one star when it's at least well done enough to get some good laughs. If you wanna see garbage that's not only easy to just toss one star but Zero Stars, then see Weekend at Bernies 2! Plus when Men at Work did something similar with a dead body it wasn't as clever and well done as this movie or as funny.
Funny movie.......2007-04-21
Bernie's dies but noboies knows it, he act like he's still alive.
Great acting by Terry Kiser!
entertainment.......2007-03-26
I always fall asleep during movies. I found this one to be very funny. Better than the first Bernie's.
Death can be funny, right?.......2007-03-09
This movie can be cheesy at times, and the plot falters a little at times, but it is hilarious and I get nostalgic every time I watch it. I loved the shooting scene and Bernie's Porsche cart. Oh, and when the drunk mobster's girlfriend comes over looking for Bernie. Super funny. It's a typical 80s movie. The DVD format is nice too.
PS (to E. Kutinsky) I believe the movie was set in New York.
Classic black humour of 80's.......2007-01-21
Fantastic film that i first saw when i was little and i like it still. Amazing black humour, nice and relaxing comedy. After 20 years is still funny: funny actors, funny scenario and just 5 stars.

When a group of criminals on the run after a bank robbery take refuge in an abandoned house, they have no idea what evil they have come upon. Isolated and presumed deserted, the house is anything but safe...As the night wears on and a thunderstorm grows outside, each member of the group begins to have visions of the atrocities that occurred within the house, haunting it forever. Voices in the well, visions of mangled bodies and clawing under the stairs plague their waking hours. As the fear in the group begins to grow and the supernatural forces in the house start to manifest themselves, the group turn on each other and exact the wrath of the soul trapped within the walls.

Don't look under your bed!.......2007-06-06
I am a horror movie junkie and although I know I am about a year late catching this movie but I'm glad I watched it. I haven't jumped in my seat at a horror movie that much in long time. Dead Birds is a creepy good time. This movie has a great story. Set during the Civil War bank robbers hold up in an abandoned plantation. Well, it's abandonded for a reason. It's haunted! It's haunted but not just by ghosts but other worldly demons. Infact that whole part of the story has a very Lovecraftian feel to it which I really liked. This is a movie with genuine suspense and some great effects/gore. It has a great combination of suspense and gore. The cast is very good even though in my humble oppinion the female lead was the weakest. Two huge thumbs up in my book.
Be warned! Don't look under your bed.
Dead Birds.......2007-05-20
Dead Birds should have been entitled, Dead Ducks! It wasn't the actors, it was the plot! Something (skinned dog manufactured out of spent gum?) attacks the 5 people heading for the old farm and they are forced to kill it before they even get close. Hmmmm, not too promising in my book! Nevertheless, the group continues to the old farm and spend lots of time wandering around the interior (neat old house!) There is also the subplot of the original owner who turned his children into little sneaky things with sharp teeth via cutting up his slaves. Of course, we don't really know why he did this or for what purpose. The kids only show up two or three times to scare someone and their moment of glory is so fast you have to stop frame them to get the full effect. In spite of the feelings of unrest and the fact that characters regularly walk out of the house and disappear, the group continues to stay. Personally, I would have kept walking on down the road after the gumby dog showed up; go figure!
One of the best horror movies i've seen in a long time !.......2007-05-14
This has it all!..a great story, decent acting and very nice effects to make you jump out of your seat. I love this film, and i got it cause i didnt know what to get as a movie. I was truly surprised how well done this movie is for being a low budget film. If you are seeking a little bit something different, with great effects and no huge stars to watch their egos only get bigger..than this film is for you and its worth the money for sure. Highly Recommended !
Superb.......2007-02-07
one of the only Western-horror movie.
Its HP Lovecraft style also.
not much gore exept for exploding head at the bank robbing scene, children getting head shot, a old man getting shot too, and some corpse looter looting a caravan of rotten corpse. very nice scene that slowly create the ambiant, then we hear children and demon kind voice. some disrtubing twisted ending that create another incoming ''plot'' that you would ask for more.
dark and evil ambiance make this movie a cult one to me.
If you preffer badly filmed Cannibal Hollcoaust snuff wanna be movie, then thsi movie might not be for you. but if you like different movie, and nice background with eery ambiant and something different, give this one a try. i instantly loved it from the start to the finish
A rare period haunting.......2006-11-28
This movie is more of a psychological thriller with special effects weaved through out the movie. I really liked the movie after it got started. It does have a very slow start and it is a little difficult to get into, but near the middle and end it turns very good. This movie is a movie to make you think about what is going on. It isn't a movie that you can have on in the background when you are doing housework. I do recommend this movie for anyone that wants a complex horror flick!!!

It's that bad.......2007-05-22
Can't anyone make a good zombie movie outside of the 'Dead' movies? Even some of them are pretty lame. Aside from over endulgence in gore let's talk acting here. Now I know that in these types of movie acting shouldn't matter, but here it is plain bad. Stilted actors and lame dialog.
I usually like a Dead movie, been a fan ever since as a boy it took me 7 tries before I finally made it all the way through the origianl 'Night of the LIving Dead' (which in my opinion is the best of any). But this one was bad.
No sense of logic, the heroes extracate themselves from a 'hopeless' situation near the end oh so easily, and don't get me started on the ending fight sequence. I did like the way she popped the leader's head like a pimple however. Thought that was fun.
Just another in a long line of poorly done movies that should be reserved for Sat afternoon on the SciFi Channel.
LOL.......2007-04-17
I think they should implement a new rating system on amazon for movies. In this system it would implement two scores. one score: viewing while sober, and the other viewing while drunk.
now the one star rating i gave this movie as you see above, is obviously the not drunk rating. what you get here is one of the most nonsensical shoddy sloppy ridiculous movies of all time. uwe boll sucks at directing, i dont care how mad he gets or how many people he challenges to a boxing match (notice he weeds out the challengers so he only faces unexperienced fighters). i cant stand these quick cut fast moving hey we are in a music video like sequences that holywood is putting in movies nowadays. and this movie is choke full of those. not to mention horrid acting, horrid dialogue, and a story line that just plain says suck!!!!
now, if you watch this movie drunk (i do not condone the abuse of alcohol in any way) (unfortunatly i think watching this movie sober might actually be more dangerous to your health that alcohol is) then i shall give this movie 5 stars. seriously. gather a bunch of your friends, grab a 6 pack of beer or what ever you drink, and watch away. seriously, i believe this movie would be the greatest episode of mystery science theater 3000 EVER... absolutly wild and zany fun is to be had of this...
ps: this trick only works with this movie. all other uwe boll movies have been made to suck in all ways, drunk or sober....alone in the dark....cries...
I'm the most generous..........2006-12-06
I'll start by saying that I do agree with most of the reviewers here, the movie was really bad. One of the stars I gave is for the good looking cast, unfortunately they can't act at all. Only at the beginning of the movie there are a few moments that makes you jump reason why I gave another star (2 in total), but after that, the movie gets ridiculous, no action, no good video effects (they ran out of $$ I bet) bad acting gets even more stupid, the fighting is horrendous, and the scenes of the game included in the movie don't help at all, instead they make it worst. At the end I was laughing so much, not because it's a good funny movie, but because I could not believe I was watching such an idiotic movie that I spent $8.00 to own. That been said, the only reason to watch it, is to laugh while you discover all the fails and lacks in directing, acting, editing, etc
Wow!.......2006-11-27
Zombie film - lots of slow-moving dead people. Annoying heroes. Only semi-annoying (because very good-looking and under-dressed) heroines.
Zombies, kill zombies! Wow!
somehow..........2006-11-25
you must understand, there is no good reason to like this film other than mindless entertainment value. There are so many plot holes and just all around weak points that it's not even worth mentioning.
Then, in the action scenes they insist on putting a "matrix spin" with the camera around anyone who fires a shot... after every shot! I'd say that if it wasn't for that it would have been helluva lot more entertaining, that just made it a lot worse and in my opinion, the images and action were the only reason anyone would ever watch this.
if you are looking for something to pass the time with some friends, somehting to make a fwe drinking games out of, then go for it. it's fun, nothing more.

move over resident evil.......2007-05-07
For those of you that grew up watching the classic zoombie movies such as night of the living dead this movie is for you. A millitary team must neutralize a school zone and collect a blood sample from a Zombie after and outbreak. This the second movie in the house of the dead series. If you like this I also recommend the Resenent evil movie. This movie should be fine for kids ages 17 up do to heavy gore language and other inappropriate content. Can the millitary send these zombie back to the depths of hades find out in the thrilling conclusion.
I enjoyed it..........2007-04-21
I don't think that it even bares mentioning that this is a step up from Uwe Boll's fantastic turd fest that was the original House of the Dead. If you're a fan of zombie movies, then this sequel is definitely up your ally, its tongue-in-cheek humor and silliness combined with a few points of genuine originality make for a fun view.
It's okay.......2007-04-08
A professor tries to bring back the dead and accidentally creates a zombie virus that threatens the whole world. A secret government agency is sent to save the day. The zombies were okay, but the dialoque at times was ridiculous. All the male characters acted the same, and were hard to tell apart. It's really a 1 star movie, I only gave it 3 stars because I think Emauelle Vagier is a beautiful woman with a distinct gravely voice and she could be a big star if she got better parts. Still, if you are a zombie fan check this movie out on a slow night.
IMPROVEMENT OVER THE FIRST, ONLY JUST.......2007-03-07
Im a huge fan of zombie movies, but I have a few criticisms of the two House of the Dead movies.
I dont know where they were going with the first movie because they just rushed it. There's no connection whatsoever between the movie and the three House of the Dead video games, maybe that wasnt their intention so I really didnt like the first one.
The second one also had no association with the video games but the style of the movie did resemble what we play in the arcades. There were a number of flaws in the movie but the biggest one that I thought was ridiculous was if humans are vunerable to infection by a zombie through bite or scratch, what about contact to zombie blood. I do give points for the gore, but when they're covered in zombie blood wouldnt they eventually become infected anyway?. Just doesnt make sense.
Not a total waste of time.......2007-01-01
But that's about as far as I'd go. Decent production values, competent zombie attacks. I saw it on the Sci-Fi Channel, and it was better than most of the CG garbage movies they show. But if I had the money, I'd go to the arcade and play the video game, not buy this.

Weekend at Bernie's starts when two lowly clerks at an insurance agency uncover a $2 million fraud and report it to their boss, Bernie (Terry Kiser). Unfortunately for them, Bernie is the one behind the fraud, and he invites them to his island beach house for the weekend, where he intends to have them killed by his mob contacts. Unfortunately for Bernie, the mob decides to rub him out instead--and thus begin the necrotic hijinks. The clerks, Richard (Jonathan Silverman) and Larry (Andrew McCarthy), arrive and discover Bernie's body. At first they panic and start to call the police, but when a party of islanders sweeps in, Richard and Larry also discover that the local residents are so self-absorbed they don't notice that Bernie is dead. So if our heroes can just convince everyone that Bernie is still alive for they weekend, they can have a splendid time. Unfortunately, they also convince the mob hitman, who keeps trying to take Bernie out. Weekend at Bernie's was made at the height of 1980s fashion and features many amusing outfits and hairstyles--often the styles are funnier than the dialogue, and the characters are tissue-paper thin. Still, there's no denying that the movie chugs along from bit to bit and never takes itself more seriously than it should. A cheerful, disposable piece of fluff. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
VERY FUN!!.......2006-06-05
Like a lot of the reviewers are saying, this movie is just fun!!
While the actors might not get any awards from critics, they would definitely get awards from the common moviewatcher!
They're hilarious and everything that they need to be for a movie like this, maybe even more.
This movie is very entertaining and it will pull you out of any bad mood that you might be in.
Take a chance on this one, it's worth it!
Even better than The Parent Trap!.......2006-06-04
A short review this time I'm afraid as I was too busy laughing to make notes as I was watching. Sidesplitting corpse based capers!
"This guy gets laid more dead, than I do alive!".......2006-05-08
I am giving this 5 stars not because it is an Oscar-worthy masterpiece - it's not. Not because it is the most clever and witty film ever - it's not. This movie gets better with time. Or maybe it just stays the same. I don't know. It is a FUN, silly and whacked out 80s movie. I love it.
I love the opposites-attract chemistry between Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman... I love the sub-plot with Silverman and the girl that he keeps trying to win over... and I love that Terry Kiser managed to keep that smirk on his face for the entire movie.
This movie was in NO way meant to be taken seriously and they knew that. It is so ridiculous, that if you even try to take it seriously on any level it'll ruin it for you. Just sit back with some friends and have a good laugh. This is an awesome summer movie.
I love so many 80s comedies as it is, so I'm biased... This one is still one of my favorites though due to it's sheer silliness.
Typical 80's movie.......2006-02-17
Weekend at Bernies is a comedy about two employees of a accounting firm. The two employees are best friends with different personalities. Richard is the hard working, do everything by the book employee and Larry is just the opposite. He's lazy and care-free. They are told to transform all the accounting books into the new computer system. When they do this they uncover that someone has been stealing from the company. When they bring this to the attention to Bernie Lomax (who is the company CEO) Lomax tells them that they have done good work and invites them to his beach house for the weekend. The two employees accept the offer and are on cloud nine. But while Richard and Larry are now planning for a vacation, Bernie Lomax is planning to have them killed for uncovering his defrauding the company. But the poeple that Bernie has paid to have the two guys killed instead instructs his hitmen to kill Lomax because he was getting to gready and he is sleeping with his girlfriend. So the hitman kills Lomax by injecting him with a needle. Richard and Larry are shocked that Lomax has died and then some of the locals come to party at Lomax's house and no one notices he is dead except for Larry and Richard. So the two of them pretend that Lomax isn't dead until the uncover what happened. If you like stupid comedy, then this is for you. When I saw this in the movies, I asked the same queston that I am asking now. How can anyone not know that this guy isn't dead?
Weekend at Bernie's.......2005-10-13
This was a very hilarous movie from the time Richard and Larry arrive at Bernie's beach house to the closing scene. It was so amazing how a "dead" Bernie could get around so many places and even host a party. Terry Kiser is fabulous playing the part of Bernie. Jonathon Silverman and Andrew McCarthy just rounded off the leading men team.

A hot-tempered blue-collar butcher kills just one man, a bullying taxi driver whom surely no one will miss, and by the end of the week winds up with a veritable stockyard of corpses in his tiny home during a Spanish summer heat wave. It all starts when Marco's girlfriend insists he go to the police, and he strangles her to keep her quiet. Soon everyone he cares for is dropping by the increasingly crowded house looking for one victim or another, and Marco, as out of control as a rabid dog, keeps on killing, one cover-up leading to another. The stinking pile of bodies soon has all the neighborhood dogs smacking their lips, until he starts dropping his fetid victims into the slaughterhouse grinder, piece by piece. Though it sounds more like a farce than a humid thriller, it's neither a black comedy nor a gory bloodfest (despite the misleading title, there is no cannibal in this picture). Marco turns from macho hothead to doleful wretch as he numbly executes each successive victim as if it's a tortured chore demanded by mocking gods. Writer-director Eloy de la Iglesia doesn't shirk on the dirty deeds--one unlucky fellow gets a cleaver full on the face--but this is less a spectacle than a woebegone portrait of the spiritual disintegration of an angry antihero. --Sean Axmaker

A video nasty??? :::spoilers ahead:::.......2005-11-05
After having watched a number of movies listed on the original video nasties, I can't help but wonder why a number of those gruesome movies were even put on there. One of those are "Cannibal Man." "Cannibal Man" is a Spanish serial killer flick that has nothing to do with cannibalism and also has very little gore in it. The goriest part of the entire movie (and most interesting) is in the beginning when there is a few scenes from a slaughterhouse of a number of cows being butchered. After that, the rest of the movie is a 90-plus minute borefest in which a man who works in a slaughterhouse and lives in the slums slowly loses his grasp on reality and quickly spirals into a madness from which he cannot escape while all the while trying to pretend that all is normal. Basically, "Cannibal Man" consists of a very simple plot in which the main character accidentally kills a taxi cab driver with a rock while the driver was busy assaulting his girlfriend. Later, he reasonably fears that his girlfriend is going to turn him in to the police so violently strangles her to death. A little later, his brother threatens to turn him into the police so he kills him too, but this time he pounds his sibling's head in with a large monkey wrench. He then kills his brother's unsuspecting fiancee, her father, (the father's death is probably the most interesting throughout the entire movie), then proceeds to kill a nosy older woman after he finishes giving her the "ole in and out." Interspersed between all these scenes is some really disturbing gay erotica between the main character and his homosexual neighbor. Thats pretty much the movie, only it drags on much longer than my concise summary of it. Probably not worth renting, certainly not worth buying, I suggest checking out "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer" over this "video nasty" that isn't so nasty after all any day.
I lost 98 min of my life.......2002-10-02
The movie cannibal man is not like it says. First off, he isnt a cannibal at all. As a lover of cannibal films this is far from one. Even the description on the back is misleading. He works at a meat plant where he makes soup, wow how convenient on disposing of bodies. He does kill some people, but the scenes where people die arent that graphic so that wasnt worth my time and my friends who were there with me watching it. What is with his neighbor, the homosexual inuendos were there, and well really upfront and unnecessary. I do not recommend this film to anyone that likes cannibal films, or horror films. It sucked
things that make you go hmmmm.......2001-07-15
I read about Cannibal Man in a recent installment of the Catalogue of Carnage, which compared it to Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer and Polanski's Repulsion. The Henry similarities are superficially there, but this was no masterpiece of psychological disintegration as in the case of the latter. It's kind of about madness and economical oppression but ultimately leaves you kind of wondering what you just watched. Wondering also why it's called Cannibal Man. He doesn't eat anybody! He merely puts parts of his victims bodies into the meat grinder at the soup factory where he works. Not exactly a horror movie, though it did resemble certain stylistic elements of the great Italian films and featured a Rosemary's Baby-derived lullaby that played repeatedly throughout, Cannibal Man tells the tale of a man who is unable to face the reality of his actions and ends up with a body count as a result. There is a fair amount of gore, which apparently got it banned in several countries, but somehow I don't think this would upset anyone seeking out a film called Cannibal Man - the slaughterhouse footage is far more disturbing. The weirdest (and most potentially interesting) element in the mix was Nester, Cannibal Man's would-be gay lover with whom he goes for an intimate swim. It was hardly suggested that Marcos kills because of repressed homosexual desires, so this scene and the tension between the two men just seemed extremely odd. If this theme had been developped, it might not have seemed so misplaced within the context of the rest of the film. Nester was fabulous though and I looked forward to seeing him again after every scene and watching Cannibal Man's expressions in contemplation of this strange new friendship. The dubbing is laughable.
Cannibal Man (1971) d: De La Iglesia, Eloy.......2001-06-04
This film is one of the better-directed movies that made it onto the Video Nasties list. A gloomy and depressing Spanish movie much in the style of Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer (1989). The movie tells the story of Marcos, a disturbed young man (Vincente Parra) who has been very desensitized by his job in a local slaughterhouse. He gets tired of butchering cows and starts killing people! One night while out on a date he goes "postal" and kills a cab driver in a heated argument. He later strangles his girlfriend (who witnessed the murder), then kills his brother for trying to convince him to turn himself in. He also cuts his brother's fiancée's throat when she discovers the bodies under the bed in his apartment. Her father comes looking for her, and in one of the gorier scenes, he is hit with a cleaver to the face. After slaughtering a woman who comes to visit his apartment things begin to literally stink, and the local dogs start hanging around. (Be sure to check out how many times dogs appear in this film, very strange indeed). The killer unsuccessfully takes his victims to work with him, and tries to turn them into hamburger. Realizing that plan was not going to work, Marcos finally turns himself in when a homosexual neighbor offers to help with the disposal of the bodies in trade for...favors. I enjoyed this one, but it left me with a weird dark feeling.
Anchor Bay rescues another so-so obscurity.......2000-12-07
Eloy De La Iglesia's "Cannibal Man" isn't about horror or even cannibalism. Instead, it's more of a parable about lower-class oppression and how the poor are deemed insignificant by the rest of society.
Marcos (Vincente Parra), a slaughterhouse worker with a beautiful young girlfriend, accidentally kills a cab driver and as a result becomes increasingly homicidal toward people over the course of one week. He's befriended by an eccentric who lives in an imposing apartment highrise nearby, and eventually Marcos becomes undone by guilt and the fact that he'll never get away with his crimes.
"Cannibal Man" is an odd title for this movie, considering there's no cannibalism (save for a brief soup-eating scene, but I don't think that qualifies) and it really comes from an era that preceded the 'cannibal/zombie boom' of the late 1970's and early 80's. The murders are relatively brief and not very inspired by today's standards (how many times have we seen a meat cleaver through the face in slasher films?), but the interaction between Marcos and his friend Nester is what really makes the movie. Morality, and--to a lesser degree--sexuality are questioned in a way that make "Cannibal Man"'s by-the-numbers bloodshed forgivable.
Recommended, but view with an open mind. This isn't the horror of Fulci or Argento, but is still worth a look.

Three Scary Movies To Chill You.......2007-05-16
This is a great product for the money. This DVD is alot of bang for the buck and a whole lot of fun. Don't watch it alone in the dark or you may freak. This is truly a popcorn movie. Be sure to hang on to your popcorn or you may throw it clear accross the room. This is a Black and White "B" movie experience. House on Haunted Hill and Night of the Living Dead will definately make you jump. The Terror will make you cover up under a blnket.
These movies are still the best. Even without computer graphics, the special effects are dynamite. If you want to be scared, this is the DVD for you. Don't pass this one by.
Unbelievable, three classics for less than $10.......2003-12-29
Actually, I got my copy at Best Buy for $5, but $10 is hardly excessive here. "Night of the Living Dead" by George Romero needs no introduction. It spawned an entire new genre of horror all by itself. Vincent Price in the original "House on Haunted Hill" is fantastic. While it may not have the CGI imagery of the remake (which is grossly overdone), it remains a genuinely creepy movie that unnerves me every time I watch it. Deciding for yourself what things in the house are the creation of Price's character and which aren't is one of the fun parts of the film. Also, never quite figured out if the housekeepers were ghosts. I lean towards yes!
A final note on the third movie, "The Terror". A *lovely* movie, which showcases an aged Boris Karloff as the "Baron" (he died a couple of years after this film) and a youthful Jack Nicholson as a young officer in Napoleon's army. Nicholson had not yet evolved into the intense, brooding figure we saw later in "The Shining", but it is still clear that his star was rising. He gives a respectable performance as a bewildered bystander to the mysterious events in the castle by the sea. I remember seeing this movie on TV as a child and being transfixed by the climax of the movie, especially the last scene in the graveyard when he finds out his new girlfriend quickly loses her charm when her face melts. Directed and produced by the legendary Roger Corman, this film is an overlooked gem of the genre. Highly recommended for any true fan of classic horror, especially since it only seems to appear in this DVD collection.
Overall, I must say this DVD is a steal, buy it!

Evil Dead for PSP.......2005-08-22
Sure the special effects are discouraging but, who could of better been cast as the reluctant hero than Bruce Campbell? This film has cheaply thrown in nudity and unusual amounts of blood give it that early 80's horror film feeling, and an NC-17 rating. It's easy to pick out flaws and inconsistencies throughout the film, but thats not the point. The point is to make you laugh, and then scare your pants off.
The UMD for this film presents the film in a hard-matted 1.78:1 ratio, which is fine for this film, due to the fact that this film was filmed in 1.33:1. The UMD doesn't contain any bonus features either. Basically, you're getting a barebones version of this film for PSP.
